Tonight, we are presenting Symbiotic Simians, a Miami-based experimental band working with electronics and Carlos Dominguez, a young computer music composer from FIU. In the fall 2012, Carlos will attend Dartmouth College to pursue an M.F.A. in Digital Musics. Most recently, Carlos performed at Miami’s PAX with the seasoned vocalist Jill Burton. Tonight’s performance, On That Note derives from percussion, found sounds and chaotic systems.

Orchestra Miami concludes its series of Free Outdoor Concerts, with “Beethoven on the Beach”, a celebration of the lives of heroic men. This concert is presented as a gift to the community, and is completely free of charge. The concert is co-sponsored by the Miami Salon Group, the City of Miami Beach and BB&T Bank.

This final outdoor performance will be presented on Saturday, May 19 at 7:00 PM, at the newly renovated North Shore Park Bandshell (also known as the “73rd Street Bandshell”), located at 7250 Collins Avenue in Miami Beach. The venue is situated in the south part of the beautiful North Shore Park. There are bleacher-style seats available, and there is plenty of green space for guests to bring a lawn chair or a blanket. Picnicking is encouraged and beverages will be available for purchase.

The program includes Mozart’s “Overture to the Magic Flute”, Lee Hoiby’s “I Have a Dream” featuring Graham Fandrei as the baritone soloist, and Beethoven’s iconic Symphony #5 in c minor, Op. 67. All three performances will be conducted by Orchestra Miami’s Artistic Director, Elaine Rinaldi.

This year’s theme, “Beethoven on the Beach”, makes the connection between Beethoven and Civil Rights through the Age of Enlightenment. “For me, these concerts are about community”, says Artistic Director Rinaldi. “It makes me very happy to be able to bring people together to enjoy our gorgeous weather and share in the experience of listening to high quality classical music. This is the perfect opportunity to introduce your children to the excitement of live classical music.”

The City of Miami Beach Cultural Affairs Department presents a free concert in Collins Park on Friday, April 13, from 4 to 8 PM in honor of National Jazz Day. The event is produced by KCC Productions. Featured will be the Dave Siegel Sextet, Troy Roberts’ Nu-Jive, the LeNard Rutledge Quartet, and the Alfredo Chacon Groove. Come sit on the grass, bring a chair, or spend the four hours dancing!

Dave Siegel’s sextet will open the show at 4 PM. Dave is a Miami-based producer, songwriter, and musician whose name has appeared as such on over 30 million records sold worldwide. David is known for performing most of the instruments on his own productions, as well performing as a musician for countless sessions outside of his own work. For the first half-hour the sextet will be playing Dave’s arrangements of favorite standards from the Great American Songbook and the classic Jazz repertory. Beginning at 4:30 the stage will be open to sit-ins by music students and professional musicians. Those interested should pre-arrange their appearances with KCC Productions by the side of the stage at 3:30.

At 5 PM Troy Roberts’ Nu-Jive will take the stage. Hailing from the remote location of Perth, West Australia, saxophonist and composer Troy Roberts has recently relocated to the USA. Troy recently won two consecutive Downbeat Jazz Soloist Awards, two consecutive West Australian Music Industry Awards, was the only Australian finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition, and continues to maintain a busy performance schedule around Australia, Europe and the USA. Troy leads the exciting nu-jazz project, Troy Roberts’ NuJive, which features some seriously talented young Miami-based artists, while showcasing Troy’s original compositions – an eclectic concoction of jazz, groove, Latin and neo-soul. In March 2011 they released their first CD, “Nu-Jive”.

Baritone LeNard Rutledge follows at 6 PM with his quartet. Captivating, soul stirring, earthy and funky. These are just some of the words used to describe the song stylings of LeNard Rutledge. LeNard he has been a featured vocalist at top Jazz spots in South Florida. LeNard has shared the stage with a number of highly respectable jazz artists such as: Nnena Freelon, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kenny Drew Jr., The Fred Thomas Band, and Harry Allen. In May of 2006, LeNard was named BEST JAZZ ARTIST, by the Miami New Times magazine.

Concluding the program at 7 PM will be the Alfredo Chacon Groove, a sextet led by vibraphonist, composer, and percussionist Alfredo Chacon. who is debuting in the USA’s jazz scene after almost two decades long career in Europe. Featured is his new album “MAGIC PLACE” in which his Cuban roots fuse with influences from other genres like funk, bossa, soul and bebop in a blend of beautiful melodies and groovy rhythms, resulting in fresh, colorful, happy and elegant music, full of surprises that will send the audience home with their feet tapping.

Miami-based group Elastic Bond fuses Latin, Soul and electronica with a foundation of songwriting, melodic vocals and positive vibes. Venezuelan producer Andres Ponce and Honduran singer-songwriter Sofy Encanto formed the band in 2006, and later joined forces with guitarist Buffalo Brown and trumpet player David Burgos to expand its unique sound.
