Design Miami/ expands geographic and creative horizons for 2015 edition. Design Miami/ welcomes first-time galleries from São Paulo, Rome, London, New York, Brussels and Beijing. Annual pavilion commission awarded to student team from Harvard University Graduate School of Design Fair’s engagement with graphic arts continues with 2015 fair identity from French illustrator Pierre Le-Tan.

his December 2-6, the ongoing evolution of Design Miami/ will see a number of exciting ‘firsts’ for the fair alongside the maturation of its core relationships and initiatives.

The abiding strength of interest in design from Brazil is marked by the inaugural participation of Firma Casa from São Paulo. Design Miami’s dedication to supporting young and emerging design talent takes a new turn as the fair partners with Harvard University Graduate School of Design (Harvard GSD) on a unique pavilion commission. Following the attention garnered by the dedicated watch satellites at Design Miami/ Basel this summer, the December 2015 fair will for the first time host a horological exhibitor in the gallery program. The joie de vivre associated with the fair’s graphic identity in recent editions will be given fresh verve by the celebrated French illustrator Pierre Le-Tan. The Design Curio program for special projects that challenge and contextualize collectible design will return for its second Miami edition.

This December sees a number of new galleries joining Design Miami’s impressive roster of exhibitors. Firma Casa, São Paulo will show a new series of works by the Campana Brothers; Galerie Philippe Gravier, Paris, specialist in architecture, will show two monumental pavilions by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma; cutting edge and experimental contemporary design from Gallery ALL of Beijing, which exhibited in 2014 as a Design Curio; the rare watch dealership Le Collection’Heure, Brussels; collectible contemporary works from PHOS ART + DESIGN (formerly Sarah Myerscough), London; and Secondome, Rome, a dynamic project space that commissions hand-crafted editions from an international list of designers.

UNBUILT: Design Miami/ Harvard GSD Pavilion
Following a school-wide competition in which over 100 students from 32 student teams participated, a judging panel comprising both Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) faculty and representatives of Design Miami/ selected the winning concept. This commission represents the first time Design Miami/ collaborates with a school and the very first design competition organized by the fair.

The chosen project was developed by a team of five students enrolled in the Harvard GSD Master in Architecture program: Joanne Cheung, Jenny Shen, Steven Meyer, Doug Harsevoort, and Yiliu Shen-Burke. As the name would suggest, UNBUILT is a celebration of unrealized design projects that will be realized as 3D foam models, which will form the pavilion’s canopy. The unmade designs that compose the pavilion are being collected from across the Harvard GSD community, and information on each will be accessible via an app developed by the digital design firm Modelo.

Craig Robins, Founder of Design Miami/, states “It is a privilege to partner with Harvard GSD, one of the most amazing sources of creative thinking in the world of design. We are excited to see the students’ vision realized at Design Miami/ – a platform that has always been committed to presenting the work of emerging talent alongside material by established and historic designers.”

Placed at the entrance to Design Miami/, UNBUILT will offer secluded and sociable seating areas; zones of greater or lesser canopy cover to shield visitors from sun or rain; and integrated lighting to create an intriguing and atmospheric night time environment.

Pierre Le-Tan’s Miami/
Design Miami/ has commissioned Parisian illustrator Pierre Le-Tan to create a portfolio of sketches inspired by the fair’s home city. Le-Tan, known for his evocative New Yorker covers, and for delicately colored, crosshatched drawings for magazines including Vogue, Tatler and The World of Interiors, has produced a vision of Miami in his signature whimsical style. The illustrator’s interpretation is peopled with bathing beauties, flamingos and fearsome aquatic creatures set against a backdrop of Art Deco hotels and Key lime pies. The sketches will not only provide the graphic identity for this year’s fair, but will also form the inspiration for a capsule collection produced in collaboration with J.Crew. The collection will be available to purchase on site at the Design Miami/ fair and at select J.Crew stores in Miami, New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris and Hong Kong.

Awards, Events and Collaborations/
This year’s fair will see the second edition of the Design Visionary Award, celebrating an exceptional individual or group that has supported, promoted or extended design practice or connoisseurship. The laureate of the award is recognized as having a continued and tangible impact on the design world and will be announced at a special event on September 29th.

This December will also see the return of the Design Curio program: a platform for immersive and surprising installations from the design world’s outer edges. Showcasing everything from handcrafts to cutting edge technology, contemporary conceptual design to historical phenomena, these contemporary ‘cabinets of curiosities’ are interspersed among the gallery booths throughout the fair.

Design Miami/ 2015 will host the ever-popular and dynamic Design Talks series, presented by the Surf Club and will play host to design installations by long-term partners Audi, Swarovski, Fendi and Perrier-Jouët.

The first performance by Javier Garcia on Friday, November 13 at 7 PM kicks off the event. Garcia utilizes his talents as a composer, arranger, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and singer, to bring together various genres and craft them into his own unique sound.

Saturday, November 14, brings two exciting performances. Tomás Diaz, at 2 PM, a musician from Cuba, starts off the evening. A member of The Spam Allstars, Diaz’s influence by greats such as Jimmy Hendrix, Bob Marley, and Celia Cruz, as well as his experience collaborating with world-class musicians and his undeniable love for music, led him to his successful musical career. The second performance commences at 7 PM by Viva Más, a musical group from the Latin streets of Philadelphia. The group, consisting of five guys, stands out due to their rich harmonies and Latin rhythms, as well as their passion for music and unconditional need to share it with the world.

Last, but definitely not least, Sonlokos closes this year’s Miami International Auto Show at 5 PM on Sunday, November 15. The emerging Latin group formed in 2012 and already received a Latin Grammy Award nomination for Best Traditional Tropical Album this year for “Locos por el Son.” Guests who stick around till the end will have the opportunity to meet & greet each artist.

Aqua Art Miami, a boutique art exhibition and sister fair to the renowned Art Miami and CONTEXT Art Miami, has released its list of 45 international galleries for the fair’s 11th edition, taking place at the retro Aqua Hotel on South Beach from December 2 through December 6. Aqua Art Miami also announces the new director Katelijne De Backer, esteemed for her work with Art New York, Lehmann Maupin and The Armory Show, who carefully handpicked a dynamic range of galleries with strong emerging and mid-career artists.

“I am beyond thrilled to lead this year’s Aqua Art Miami as Director,” says De Backer. “Aqua is a little jewel of Miami Art Week—it provides exposure to the undiscovered works of young artists and galleries, which is a crucial aim of the fair and something that I personally love to support.”

With its intimate setting and refined presentation, Aqua Art Miami has cultivated a reputation as a fair to discover artists in the Aqua Hotel’s serene atmosphere. De Backer, a seasoned director, has been producing cutting-edge events since the beginning of her career. For over 10 years, she led The Armory Show to nearly triple in size and transformed it into one of the most important events on the international art marker’s calendar.

With all of her success, De Backer’s arrival to Aqua Art Miami will be sure to leave an indelible influence on this year’s fair. She has already made waves for the brand as the Director of the first-ever Art New York this past May, a position she will continue to lead into the following year. Under her direction, Aqua will host just over 100 artists with galleries from 28 cities and 10 countries.

Aqua Art Miami is billed to be one of the most highly anticipated contemporary art exhibitions in December. Opening night for VIP cardholders and select members of the press is Wednesday, December 2 from 3pm to 10pm. The fair will be open for public viewing starting Thursday, December 3rd from 12pm to 9pm and then through Saturday from 11am to 9pm, Sunday 11am – 6pm. There will be a daily complimentary shuttle service that will connect Art Miami and CONTEXT Art Miami with Aqua Art Miami. Single-day tickets to the Aqua fair exclusively are $15; and a multi-fair pass to Aqua Art Miami, CONTEXT Art Miami and Art Miami are $85, which can be purchased via Eventbrite, at the following link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/aqua-art-miami-2015-tickets-18244371406

Fridge Art Fair’s philosophy is to make the art fair scene accessible to diverse exhibitors and visitors alike. “Our booth fees are low,” said Eric Ginsburg, the Artist and Founding Director known throughout the world for his Dog and Cat paintings. Admission is ten dollars but on the door policy is: “No one is ever turned away. Generous donations will help keep this a reality.”

Fridge Art Fair celebrates creative freedom and diversity, encouraging exhibitors to explore all possibilities within their spaces as, in the words of Fridge Curator Linda DiGusta, “exploration, energetic participation and enthusiastic support create transformative energy, rules kill spirit.” Exhibitors are drawn from the world art community and include dealers, collectives and unrepresented artists – many “regulars,” and some new to Fridge.

This year the Fair welcomes a major collaboration with Art Shape Mammoth, who will curate and present large-scale sculpture, performances – dance and movement artist Laura Gordon will work with the large-scale paintings of new Fridge artist Iliyan Ivanov as a backdrop and Anna Marie Shogren will dance a durational performance – and guest artists from Shanghai, China in addition to their core program.

Special presentations also include an exhibition by students of Virginia Erdie’s youth art program in Miami, a screening of Katherine Delaney’s documentary/love letter to the drag world, Charmed Life, and works of Kazuko Miyamoto and Eva LeWitt presented by Gallery 128, the Lower East Side fixture and magnet that hosted the inaugural Fridge Art Fair in May 2013.

Founder renowned artist Eric Ginsburg http://www.worldoferic.com will present his signature pet portraits and accept commissions to benefit BARC Animal Rescue in Brooklyn, NY – bring a photo of Fido or Fluffy and save a life! His work will be featured in the exhibition. Additionally, a satellite exhibition curated by the Fair will open in November, hosted by LGBT Visitor Center, 1130 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach. Details to be announced.

Fridge Art Fair, a play on “Freeze,” was born in 2013 on the Lower East Side, as a satellite of Frieze New York. The inaugural Fair was filled to capacity with exhibitors who answered Founder Eric Ginsburg’s challenge, “Can you fit into the Fridge?” at Kazuko Miyamoto’s small but storied storefront, Gallery OneTwentyEight. The Fair has gathered a growing following of exhibitors, sponsors, and visitors through two more New York editions, as well as two previous Miami fairs in 2013 and 2014. The 2015 edition will mark Fridge’s Miami Beach debut, where the fair’s unique character will complement the offerings of the nearby Pulse and NADA shows, as well as Scope, Aqua and Art Basel in South Beach.

UNTITLED’s curatorial team, Artistic Director, Omar Lopez-Chahoud, curators Christophe Boutin and Melanie Scarciglia, along with Programming Director Amanda Schmitt, have identified a selection of special projects and programming that will engage visitors in the exhibitors’ booths and at various locations throughout the fair, indoors and outside.

“Working closely with our exhibitors we selected a strong group of special works by artists that are cross-generational,” states Amanda Schmitt. “The special programming elements from our non-profit and artist-run participants are integrated into the fair’s layout, demonstrating UNTITLED’s commitment to creating an environment unlike other art fairs.”

Visitors will be greeted by three special projects selected from submissions by UNTITLED exhibitors. Near the entrance will be a large-scale sculptural installation by Ronald Bladen presented by Loretta Howard Gallery (New York). Bladen was an influential artist who inspired a younger generation of minimalists such as Donald Judd, Carl Andre and Sol LeWitt. His work Chevrons (1974) explores the power and significance of this fundamental geometric shape, ubiquitous for its use in insignia, in language as punctuation, as a mathematical sign, and in design. The work consists of nine monolithic black sculptures that are arranged evenly in three rows, activating and highlighting the space between and surrounding the sculpture.

Los Angeles-based artist Scoli Acosta’s Earth Quartet (2013) is comprised of a series of pentagonal canvases, edged with jingles fashioned from flattened bottle caps. The work was inspired by Chris Marker’s documentary film, The Sixth Side of the Pentagon, that captures the 1967 Vietnam protest at the Pentagon. Acosta’s incorporation of playful bottle cap jingles also nods to Abbie Hoffman’s sarcastic attempt to levitate the Pentagon, in hopes it would turn orange and vibrate. Earth Quartet is presented by Galerie Laurent Godin (Paris).

Elise Ferguson’s paintings do not involve paint; she uses materials that are associated with sculpting: plaster and wood. Coloring the plaster with pigment, and layering the surface to a sculptural level, Ferguson’s work is based on mathematical puzzles, design and geometric variation. Ferguson’s Tess Ramble (2015), presented by Romer Young Gallery (San Francisco), is a three panel site-specific work that will be positioned in direct dialogue with the two other special projects, completing a minimal geometric trinity.

Miami Project and Art on Paper Miami open Tuesday, December 1st at The Deauville Beach Resort in the heart of Miami Beach. Building on the strong success of their previous editions, these co-located fairs will feature the best in modern and contemporary art presented by over seventy galleries from around the world.

MIAMI PROJECT EDITION FOUR
Miami Project’s fourth edition will feature a unique confluence of historical and contemporary art, offering fair-goers a distinct Miami Beach experience. On the heels of Miami’s Unrealism exhibition – a direct response to one of the biggest new trends in the market today – and the figurative bend of MoMA PS1’s Greater New York show, Miami Project will include several of the world’s top figurative painting programs. The resurgence of this timeless form of art-making has found its new place at the foreground of the global art scene, and Miami Project’s leading galleries that focus on paintings of the person will be a must-visit stop for all those seeking pristine examples of bold figuration.

Joining Miami Project for the first time, New York City’s Hirschl & Adler Modern will show work by John Moore and Christopher Wilmarth. Fellow first-time exhibitor Jill Newhouse Gallery will exhibit rare works on paper by Pierre Bonnard and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. Making its Miami debut, Lori Bookstein Fine Art will show mixed media on panel by Hiroyuki Hamada with a series of screenprints on steel enamel plates by Jennifer Bartlett. Robert Fontaine Gallery will present significant work by Robert Rauschenberg including the artist’s 2007 Expresser (From The Runts Series) and 1980’s mixed media work Rush 3. Deborah Force Fine Art joins Miami Project to exhibit Charles Ephraim Burchfield’s Butterfly Festival, 1949-56, and a rare 1929 Edward Hopper watercolor on paper. Catharine Clark Gallery will present sculpture by Wanxin Zhang, Masami Teraoka’s 1984 watercolor and pencil on paper Work Painting for Wave Series, and Chris Doyle’s 2014 video The Fluid. Claire Oliver Gallery will show an exhibition of photographs by Laetitia Soulier and oil on canvas by Matt Bahen. Nancy Toomey Fine Art will present works on paper by Lynda Benglis and Larry Bell. Winston Wächter Fine Art will show a new monumental work on paper by Zaria Forman, Richard Levy Gallery will present painting by Mel Davis and Matt Magee, and Sasha Wolf Gallery will show large scale photography by Doug Fogelson and Christopher Rodriguez. ART ON PAPER MIAMI
A Time Out New York Critic’s Pick and one of The New York Times’ must see March 2015 art fairs, Art on Paper New York welcomed over 18,000 visitors and played host to compelling, large-scale installations and critically acclaimed exhibitions over four buzzing days. The fair’s fresh Miami counterpart will be a similar forum for the exploration of a medium – a space for intimate conversation between exhibitor and collector with a refreshing focus on the artwork itself. Sasha Wolf returns as the fair’s Artistic Director working with James Stroud of Center Street Studio to guide the fair’s tightly curated paper-based program. TOP FOOD AND DRINK
From December 1 – 6, The Deauville Beach Resort will play host to some of the country’s best food and cocktail programs. Miami’s renowned The Broken Shaker will take over the hotel’s beverage service, offering visitors the exclusive opportunity to experience the cocktail program recently voted this year’s Best Hotel Bar in America. New York City favorites Black Tree and Big Mozz will join the fairs to feature new menus crafted specifically for the Miami audience. Featuring two members of Zagat’s 30 Under 30, and one of the world’s best bars, The Deauville Beach Resort will be the ultimate Miami Art Week destination for top food and drink.

To celebrate National Sandwich Day on Monday, November 2nd, La Moderna is offering a complimentary glass of wine with an order of the Broccola Panozzi, a “pizza sandwich” stuffed with broccoli rabe, bufala mozzarella and Italian Sausage, available during lunch time hours.

Hailing from the streets of Napoli, the Panozzi was created to serve as a quick, delicious lunch for the working-class in the modernist period in Italy after World War II. This distinctive Italian street food is shaped like a big sandwich, made from high-quality pizza dough and baked in the handmade Stefano Ferrara wood-burning oven. The interior of the Panozzi can be stuffed with a variety of cheeses, meats and vegetables.

The dough is baked flat, and once done it is pulled from the oven, stuffed and then given a second pass in the oven immediately before consumption. Other Panozzi options at La Moderna include: Con Polpette: served with meatballs and tomato sauce; Bresaola: served with bresaola, arugula, cherry tomatoes and parmigiano; Al Pollo: served with grilled chicken, avocado, lettuce and tomato; and Prosciutto: served with prosciutto, mushrooms and bufala mozzarella

ABOUT LA MODERNA

Born in the once-working class, now fashionable Testaccio neighborhood of Rome, La Moderna artfully combines a full menu of modern Italian classics from la cucina (the kitchen), skillfully crafted cocktails and pizza, served in a sophisticated and lively space, with more than a touch of Italian flare. La Moderna is located in at 1874 Bay Road in the Sunset Harbour Shops, Miami Beach, Florida. Like us and follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @LaModernaMiami. Beginning in Miami and Miami Beach during the post World War II era as a local variation of modernist architectural movements in other parts of the world, MiMo buildings add glamour, fun, and material excess to otherwise stark, minimalist, and efficient styles.

The Fontainebleau, Eden Roc and Deauville hotels and garden style apartments are stunning examples of MiMo – featuring acute angles, delta wings, sweeping curved walls, and soaring pylons. Like Art Deco, there is a strong preservationist movement to preserve MiMo from the wrecking ball. The present development boom is relentless in its quest to replace this architecture with highrises.

Photographs of Art Deco Cocktail Tour by Mr Q 305

One of the most interesting, refreshing and informative ways to spend an afternoon in Miami Beach is to take an Art Deco Cocktail Tour. As the name implies, you will be walking around the Art Deco gems of South Beach while stopping at a few of them to enjoy a libation.

Recently, Christine Michaels of Art Deco Tours invited a group of bloggers to participate in the experience. We all gathered at the Z Ocean Hotel where Christine immediately made us feel welcomed, she introduced us to James Cubby who would serve as our guide along with Christine.

It was an amazing experience!

Even if you’ve been in Miami most of your life (such as myself) the Art Deco Cocktail Tour is a wonderful way to get re-acquainted with Miami Beach’s wonderful history and architecture, not to mention the depth of information that can only be acquired from seeing and walking through these magnificent masterpieces. Just take the tour…you won’t regret it.

David Dermer, former Miami Beach’s mayor will give a lecture on the politics of development in Miami Beach 1995-2005, focusing on the Save Miami Beach movement and his efforts battling big money to try to limit development on Miami Beach.

David Dermer Bio:
On September 9, 2005, Miami Beach Mayor David Dermer was returned to office for a third and final term. Dermer was the second youngest mayor in city history when first elected to the post in 2001 at age 38. Only his father, former Miami Beach Mayor Jay Dermer was younger, when he was elected mayor in 1967.
Prior to becoming Mayor, David Dermer also served a successful 4-year term as a Miami Beach City Commissioner. A dedicated community activist and attorney, Dermer first emerged onto the Miami Beach political scene as the leader of the successful “Save Miami Beach” (SMB) ballot initiative, a movement aimed at curbing overdevelopment along the City’s waterfront. Dermer’s grassroots organization gathered more than 6000 voter signatures, placing the charter amendment on the ballot. The SMB campaign won over voters and the initiative passed overwhelmingly, despite the fact that SMB’s opposition spent $2 million to Dermer’s $25,000. David Dermer graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School in 1980. He received his Bachelors Degree in Justice from American University in Washington D.C. and subsequently earned his Juris Doctorate from Cumberland School of Law. He served as a State Prosecutor for the 17th Judicial Circuit after graduation and in 1990 he opened his own firm, David Dermer Law Offices. He currently teaches History and Government at Miami Beach Senior High School.

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – Design and Film Superstars in the Magic City

In Miami we have a stellar pool of locals from which to be inspired and learn but one of the other perks of living in the Magic City is its access to top notch talent from abroad. Whether its the influx of world renown artists during Art Basel, DJs during Miami Music Week, or designers during Miami Swim Week, we have an inordinate amount of access to superstars and, thereby, inspiration. For a “normal week”—that is, a non-themed week—last week saw a heavy influx of celebrity talent. We were particularly excited that three of these individuals, known for their accomplishments in design or film, shook up the style conversation while in our sunny shores.

Gia Coppola is recognized for her filmmaking genius. Last week she sent a sliver of that genius down to Miami on her behalf in the form of Boccaccio ’70, the last film of a personally-curated series of classic Italian pictures that also traveled to New York and LA this summer. For the final installment of the Gia Coppola x Peroni Nastro Azzurro Grazie Cinema Series, Miami tastemakers gathered at the Miami Beach Edition to munch on hors d’oeuvres, sip on Peroni, and relish in Italian creativity. The breezy evening spent under the Miami stars became as much a muse for those gathered as the film itself.

Meanwhile, at Jade Brickell, Mexican designer Kris Goyri made his Miami debut with a private sale organized by fellow Mexican and marketing guru, Polina Panopoulos. At the event, Goyri presented his Spring/Summer and Fall Winter 2015 collections, as well as introduced exclusive pieces from his 2016 collection. “I love to make women feel beautiful, sexy, and unique,” said Goyri. “Coming to Miami made me discover a cosmopolitan woman that is looking to stand out.” Now, with his elegant, fresh, and beautiful designs at our reach (he is hoping to be back in November), we can.

The star-studded week concluded at the Fontainebleau, where celebrity designer Diann Valentine hosted a meet and greet at Modern Luxury Bride South Florida and The Caribbean‘s Afternoon of Bridal Luxury event. During a gourmet sit-down luncheon, local brides were treated to a keynote speech in which Valentine highlighted bridal trends and talked about celebrating the uniqueness of each love story. Valentine also gave the brides a sneak peek of the new collection of her signature “Valentine cuff“. Rest assured, the upcoming wedding season will be one worth watching.

The decade from the mid-1970’s to the mid-1980’s was a turbulent time for Miami Beach. Its best years as a glamorous vacation destination and Hollywood hot spot were behind it. The sun-and-fun formula that had delivered so much since the end of World War II had grown stale as new competitors like Disney World and the Caribbean drew tourists that had once flocked to the Beach. The city also faced overlapping demographic crises with a rapidly aging population in South Beach battered by inflation and an unexpected influx of poor immigrants during the Mariel boatlift.

In the midst of this turmoil, an alternative approach to development emerged in the most unlikely of places: South Beach, the center of the crisis. Historic preservation of Art Deco architecture offered an unexpected new vision to compete with the fading formulas of the past. It was during this tumultuous period that a battle for the city’s identity commenced, pitting big developers against scrappy preservationists, generating controversial images in television and film, and setting the stage for the remaking of Miami Beach.

Exhibit: Flashback Fashions from the 1970’s to Today

The Art Deco Museum’s exhibit “Flashback Fashions from the 1970s to Today” invites you to travel back in time to revisit fashion fads and styles of the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and through the present day. Popular trends of the past and present are showcased featuring mannequins dressed in vintage apparel, fashion advertisements, pages from magazines such as LIFE and Vogue, and pop culture references. The exhibit also highlights two important Miami Beach contributors to the fashion world – Gianni Versace and NBC’s television show Miami Vice.

History can be chronicled in many different ways – through wars, through art, through film, through political leaders and conflicts, but also through fashion. An art form in and of itself, fashion is sometimes forgotten as a product of history itself. Fashion is very much influenced by the conditions of the times, and popular styles are constantly changing, or making comebacks. Looking forward to the future, it will be interesting to see where history will take fashion next.

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – Capretto Sparks Shoe Talks in Miami

Thank-You-Miami-For-Fashion-For-Breakfast-Chelsea-Paris-Title

As summer wraps up, the days of 24-hour bare feet are also coming to an end and the local fashion spotlight has turned to shoes. It all started last month when Teen Vogue‘s Fashion and Accessories director, Marina Larroudé, joined Chelsea Paris footwear designer and founder, Theresa Ebagua, in hosting Fashion for Breakfast at Cecconi’s Miami Beach (see photos below). Their discussion, which was moderated by Miami’s own Jason Salstein, Head Buyer for Capretto Shoes in South Miami, centered around Fall shoe trends including the two styles from the Chelsea Paris Fall 2015 collection exclusive to Capretto which were unveiled during an in-store event the following day.

“Capretto is unlike any boutique in the country, if not the world,” says Jason. “As an accessory store, we have the ability to curate collections and custom shoes, be it a color, fabric, or heel height, differentiating ourselves from any other boutique.”

This month, Jason continues his mission of bringing A-list designers to Miami and introducing them to the local market. On the agenda? Luxury shoe designer and owner of his eponymous label, Jerome Rousseau. Jerome will be at Capretto on Tuesday, September 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. previewing pieces from his Pre-Fall 2015 collection and signing any pairs purchased during the in-store event. On Wednesday, September 2, he will join Miami model, blogger, and “It” girl Jenny Lopez in hosting Fashion for Breakfast at Cecconi’s Miami Beach from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Their panel will be moderated by Haute Living Magazine Contributing Editor and RAC owner, Regina Arriola Cauff.

We asked Jason how he lures top notch designers to our beautiful city and his response was on point. “Who wouldn’t want an excuse to come to Miami? It gives designers a chance to truly see the Miami market, which is not only a huge market in itself but also acts as a window to South America.” For the locals, these events present a unique opportunity to interact with designers of young brands and share with them our deepest, darkest shoe desires. Plus, the in-store events are the perfect pretense to admire (and shop) Capretto’s drool-worthy shoe inventory in person. See you there? RSVP to fashionforbreakfastmia [at] gmail [dot] com.

Fridge Art Fair NYC and Fridge Art Fair Miami is pleased to announce its third Miami Edition: The Fridge Fudge Pop taking place in the heart of Miami’s arts and culture center from Thursday, December 3 through Sunday, December 6, 2015. There will also be a Fudge Pop Pre-Party on Wednesday night, December 2nd. Fridge Art Fair’s third Miami edition has moved from its original location in the City of Miami and its Little Havana home to its new Miami Beach location, but Fridge has not forgotten its Miami Calle Ocho roots! The Fudge Pop Pre-Party will take place at The Historic Ball & Chain on Calle Ocho, beginning at 8:00pm in the heart of “Little Havana Central Station of Arte” where you can get a sneak peak of the landmarks of one of Miami’s most influential and treasured neighborhoods. Founder, Eric Ginsburg, is also teaming up once again with Brooklyn Animal Rescue Coalition (BARC) to benefit the pooches-and other furry friends-he loves to paint.

Fridge Art Fair Miami will be held at the Holiday Inn, Miami Beach, located directly across from the Fontainebleau Hotel and N.A.D.A. A wide range of booth choices and art fair floor plans will be made available.

Fridge Art Fair –
Fridge Art Fair was born in 2013 on New York’s Lower East Side. The inaugural Fair was filled to capacity with exhibitors who answered Founder Eric Ginsburg’s challenge, “Can you fit into the Fridge?” at Kazuko Miyamoto’s small but storied storefront, Gallery OneTwentyEight. The Fair has gathered a growing following of exhibitors, sponsors and visitors through two more New York editions, as well as two previous Miami fairs in 2013 and 2014. So far, each Fridge Art Fair has coincided with Frieze New York in May and Art Basel Miami in December.

Fridge Art Fair is the boutique, soft sell, dog-friendly satellite fair dubbed as, “The baby who has refused to obey orders to stand outside the door while the adults confabulate inside,” by Artinfo.

Fridge Art Fair Founder and Artist Eric Ginsburg, known for the uniquely soulful and painterly qualities of his portraits, Eric credits Sol LeWill as a patron and friend who commissioned works, as well as a mentor, and, along with Eric’s “pen pal” William Wegman, as “kind of a hero.”

Ginsburg studied with Maureen Gallace at NYU and received his MFA from Columbia University in 2005. His works are found in public & private collections around the wold including: Herb & Dorothy Vogel (now in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Art);Galerie Nieu Schoten (Ten Boom Museum, The Netherlands); the New Britain Museum of American Art; The Cartin Collection; Cindy Sherman; William Wegman; Lisa Spellman; and the Francis J. Greenburger Collection, Paula Cooper and the LeWitt Collection.

Sponsors –
This edition of Fridge Art Fair Miami is being sponsored by Ball & Chain, Barlington Group, Charles Group Hotels, Lose Style Events, Publix, and Holiday Inn returns as the Fair’s premier sponsor after co-hosting Fridge New York 2015.

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – Miami Does Swim Week

Thank-You-Miami-For-Fashion-Miami-At-Swim-Week-Escape-Miami-Style-Lounge-title

Few things make as much sense as Miami hosting Swim Week. We’ve got beautiful beaches, fantastic weather, an exciting nightlife and, most importantly, incredibly talented people. Our favorite part of locally-hosted international events like Swim Week is seeing the global spotlight shine on our local talent and watching them flourish. This year, we went into the bikini madness with a goal to observe and report on the accomplishments of Miami designers, products, venues, and people. Alas, here we are today sharing five of the week’s best 305-bred moments.

1. Liliana Montoya – Mermaids of Atlantis Runway Show at Funkshion Fashion Week
Liliana Montoya is a Miami Beach-based brand that has captivated aspiring mermaids in the US and beyond. For the brand’s third Miami Swim Week, Liliana stunned the crowd with sexy wrap-around pieces and a killer summer soundtrack that included our “it” summer song: East & Young Remix of Runaway (U&I) by Galantis. The night was made all the sweeter because it was a collaborative effort of multiple Miami girl bosses, including Valérie Engel of South of Fifth’s Roses and Dreams Boutique which carries her brand. If you missed our previous feature on Valérie, check it out here for some serious life inspo then stop by her store to pick up Liliana Montoya’s sultry swim designs.

2. Style Saves Swim at the Miami Beach EDITION and the SLS Hotel
Miami non-profit Style Saves, which fundraises to donate underprivileged kids with clothing, shoes and accessories, was the talk of the town with their 5th Annual Fashion Show Fundraiser at the Miami Beach EDITION. The runway show featured beach must-haves by coveted brands (Kai Lani, Regine Chevallier, and Goêt) and swoon-worthy moments thanks to the world’s cutest puppies. Then, on Sunday, Style Saves hopped over to the SLS Hotel where they hosted pop-ups of local brands and boutiques (iSHINE365, Style Mafia, MVM Boutique) for a “So Miami” shopping experience in the name of charity. Thanks to Style Saves, the weekend was a fruitful one for our small businesses and for the less fortunate children in our community. P.S. If you want to contribute to their more than worthy cause, you can donate at any time.

3. Babalú at Hammock Show
Babalú, local luxury boutique and the brainchild of perfume fanatics Greg Melvin and Paolo Ambu, was also present at Miami Swim Week. We stumbled upon their elegant display outside the W Hotel’s trés chic ballroom and, as soon as we spotted their unmistakeable pink logo, we were super psyched to see what they had in store. You may remember from our feature on their Perfume Genie that the team from Babalú has a flare for the exciting and the exotic and, at Hammock Show, they didn’t disappoint. They used the trade show to debut their new line of artisanal candies which are fittingly inspired by notes from fine fragrances like those sold at their Lincoln Road outpost. The layer of notes in the candies, such as the honey, ginger and oriental spice in the “Spicy” line, make them a unique gift for anyone with a sweet tooth.

4. Escape Miami Style Lounge at Shelborne Wyndham Grand
Escape Miami Lounge, an annual swim-themed ode to Miami by Annie Vazquez (A/K/A The Fashion Poet) and Katya Bravo, returned for its third year bigger and better than ever. The event took over the Shelborne‘s pool and cabanas with pop-ups from well-known brands like Italia Independent (which will be opening their first store in Miami soon) and newly-launched ones like Flair Miami blog’s new line of Miami-inspired t-shirts. We were all about the fruity summer cocktails, the burst of cooling kryogenifex mist, and The Biscayne Poet‘s sweet prose. This really is one of Miami’s best summer parties time and time again.

5. Akai, Alexibella and Siempre Golden Brunch at Seagrape
We ended our Miami quest with brunch (because Miami, bro) at Seagrape where we scarfed down three chocolate croissants in the presence of the two designers of Akai Swimwear and their other media guests. In addition to overloading on carbs, we had the chance to chat with Daniela Longo and Chabeli De Sousa about the story behind their brand, the inspiration for their second collection, and their time at the University of Miami (Go ‘Canes!). We also perused their lookbook and those of Alexibella and Siempre Golden before leaving with a super chic and cheeky Siempre Golden bikini that you’ll get the chance to peep in a future post. Until then, you can find your summer swim in Akai, Alexibella, and Siempre Golden. Trust.
