In the theatre, a stage comes to life when the actors begin to perform. So it is with Lina Bo Bardi’s architecture. Her buildings are vibrant when inhabited: they come to life with the energy, diversity and creativity of people.

Lina Bo Bardi: Together pays tribute to Lina’s capacity to engage with every facet of culture and to see the potential in all manner of people. Artist Madelon Vriesendorp has conducted workshops at Solar do Unhão and combined objects made there with others of her own and artefacts by Brazilian craftspeople. Tapio Snellman’s film installation explores the life generated by SESC Pompéia within São Paulo and draws parallels with the city of Salvador. Combined, these two works do not merely recreate Lina’s methods or represent her work, but instead allow a more direct experience through a form of re-enactment.

Assemble designed and built a flexible enclosure, a set of display furniture and a technical system. The exhibition furniture designed by Assemble can adapt to a range of gallery situations and presents the diverse content within one space, without hierarchy. The furniture was cast using snowcrete with vermiculite aggregate, which was then hand-hammered to make a rough, gold flecked surface. The material palette and construction methodology learn directly from Lina Bo Bardi’s approach to making buildings, and the display of exhibition contents, without hierarchy, follows many of Lina’s own curatorial practices.

The exhibition is curated by Noemí Blager and presented by Arper. Major support to MCAD is provided by the Miami Design District and TWENTY TWO GROUP. Additional support is provided by Luminaire.

In Racing Extinction, a team of artists and activists exposes the hidden world of extinction with never-before-seen images that will change the way we see the planet. Two worlds drive extinction across the globe, potentially resulting in the loss of half of all species. The international wildlife trade creates bogus markets at the expense of creatures that have survived on this planet for millions of years. And the other surrounds us, hiding in plain sight — a world that the oil and gas companies don’t want the rest of us to see. Using covert tactics and state-of-the-art technology, the Racing Extinction team exposes these two worlds in an inspiring affirmation to preserve life as we know it. Representing the voices of thousands of participants in hundreds of meetings over three years of development, the Miami-Dade County Parks and Open Space Masterplan addresses the interconnectedness of life, and the potential for parks to provide an infrastructure that builds individual, community, and ecological resiliency and well-being. The drawings illustrate a shared vision for an integrated system of great parks and public spaces, natural and cultural areas, all linked across the region through greenways, waterways, complete streets and sidewalks. Three fundamentals guide the plan:
• Placemaking – creating dynamic, resilient communities for all people
• Health and Fitness – enhancing individual, family, and community health and well-being
• Conservation and Stewardship – protecting open space, connecting children to nature, developing park stewards, and advancing conservation
Most importantly, the plan establishes a process of inquiry designed to support ongoing exploration to address the challenges and opportunities of the future, while preserving the significant ecological and cultural legacy of one America’s largest and most diverse park systems.

Steak Brasil Churrascaria, the most authentic and enjoyable Brazilian restaurant in Downtown Miami, is announcing its anniversary celebration taking place on March 26th. For the past three years, the restaurant has brought entertainment and mouth-watering food to our plates, making us travel to Brazil without leaving the city of Miami. Many restaurants claim true authenticity in their food offerings, but Steak Brasil lets its customers do the talking. The restaurant prides itself in providing patrons an all-encompassing legitimate Brazilian experience by focusing on family, friendship and a love for tradition.

Jaciel Santos, owner of Steak Brasil, has worked in every possible aspect of the restaurant business for more than 12 years to finally craft together what he likes to call, “unique experience of proximity” to his native country. By emphasizing on little details, such as greeting customers with a welcoming and joyful “Bom Dia!” to hiring accomplished gauchos with over 20 years of experience preparing and serving according to Brazil’s richest traditions, Santos is showcasing to numerous customers the best parts of his culture.

“It was important for me to create a space where family and friends have the luxury to eat outside their home, yet still feel the comfort and ease of being at home,” said Santos. “I wanted more than a place where you go once a year to celebrate a big event, but instead a place that feels like the weekend visit to your favorite aunt’s house where you eat until your heart is content while talking and reconnecting.”

During the third anniversary celebration, the “passista” dancers will be presenting an impressive performance for all of our guests and the restaurant will be offering complementary Caipirihna tasting, the most popular and delicious cocktail in the country of Brazil, 2 for 1 drink specials and traditional sharing options like picanha, an assortment of sausages or cheeses that will awake your taste buds.

Listening to a song now is likely to involve digital innovation, similarly to when one rents an apartment, uses a car, or books a taxi. The music that used to be bought and owned is increasingly an ephemeral choice, ordered for limited periods when and as wanted.

Delivery, consumption, and creation changes have been constants of the music industry for decades. The evolutions have been from live to analog formats, to digital platforms such compact discs and copies, to full downloads, and most recently internet streaming. Each shift has altered the relation-ship and income split between delivery intermediaries and the artists.

Ubiquitous internet access coupled with smart phone and tablet sophistication now offer access that previously required premium services or a PC. What will be the next iteration of content delivery and distribution? Will it involve music only or incorporate other mediums? Which new delivery platforms will be developed? What role might big data play in target marketing and sales? Will it be easier for new or independent artists to obtain a market for their creations? Will new intellectual property ten-sions arise?

Explore these and other facets of Music on Demand with our moderators and participants at this interactive educational event sponsored by the MIT Enterprise Forum of South Florida. The registration and networking period starts at 6:30 PM. The discussion will begin at 7:30 PM.

Miami, FL 33132
Become an Ambassador for African American Art to receive an invitation: pamm.org/artfund.

On February 16, 2016, Pérez Art Museum Miami will welcome more than 500 Ambassadors for African American Art to the museum for a celebration at the Third Annual Reception for the PAMM Fund for African American Art presented by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

The evening will showcase a performance, Ground (In Progress), presented by PAMM exhibition artist Nari Ward. Ground (In Progress) is a floor-based sculpture made from 700 copper-topped bricks and adorned with painted geometric symbols drawn from the Underground Railroad directional code. Five local dancers will perform and improvise atop Ward’s sculpture and respond to its ideas of the untouchable and monumental nature of works of fine art using a range of dance styles.

In addition, guests will enjoy a musical performance by Girl Power’s Girls’ Choir of Miami, a local organization that strives to provide opportunities for girls in a year-round quality music education program, and a complimentary dinner reception with a musical performance by Ketchy Shuby on the East Portico.

Initiated with a $1 million grant, funded equally by Jorge M. Pérez and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the PAMM Fund for African American Art builds on PAMM’s longstanding commitment to exhibiting and collecting the work of African American artists. The support of PAMM’s Ambassadors for African American Art help grow the collection with works by significant artists such as Al Loving, Faith Ringgold, Rashid Johnson, Kehinde Wiley, Purvis Young and more.

Program Three further broadens the horizons of MCB’s dancers with two additional company premieres including Justin Peck’s breakout ballet Year of the Rabbit, choreographed to music from Sufjan Stevens’ 2002 electronica‐influenced album Enjoy Your Rabbit.

The second premiere is one of Paul Taylor’s masterpieces, Sunset, performed to the haunting music of Edward Elgar and illustrating the complexities of love, camaraderie and separation experienced by six soldiers and the young women they leave behind.

Closing this spirited program is Bourrée Fantasque, acclaimed as one of George Balanchine’s most charming works. This big, vibrant, joyful ballet is set to the sparkling music of Emmanuel Chabrier – C’est Magnifique!

In addition to his Metropolitan Opera debut in December 2015, David has also sung leading roles with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera, Festival Aix-en-Provence and the Vienna State Opera, among many others.

In them, we transform everyday materials, such as belting textiles, used fabric, beads, metal trinkets or paper, into works of art.” They are also inspired by everyday people and have made it part of their mission to collaborate with many different communities to create art.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and The Miami Foundation cordially invite you to:
A talk by Gabe Klein author of “Start-Up City: Inspiring Private and Public Entrepreneurship, Getting Projects Done & Having Fun” at The Idea Center at Miami Dade College.

More than ever, cities are charged with carrying out national-level policies and are expected to be at the forefront of our response to climate change, housing inequality, job creation and public health. At the same time, most city government agencies are perennially understaffed and impeded by cumbersome, often backward regulations that leave them at odds with the private sector. Seemingly insurmountable frustrations are everywhere. So the big question is: Can meaningful changes be made in spite of these realities? Gabe Klein argues in his book, “Start-Up City,” that the answer is yes.

Klein formerly led the Chicago Department of Transportation under Mayor Rahm Emanuel and was director of the District Department of Transportation under Mayor Adrian Fenty in Washington, D.C. He launched Capital Bikeshare in Washington, the first large-scale bike-share system in the U.S. In Chicago he later launched Divvy, which is now the largest bike-share system in the U.S.

Before entering government, Klein honed his creativity and leadership skills working for startups, including Zipcar, where he served as vice president for four years. He also wrote a business model for the first point-to-point car-sharing concept. Klein sits on the boards of the National Association of City Transportation Officials and Streetsblog.

Who is in control – your mind or your brain? Come with us as we explore our inner world and examine its real life effects; from learning to love, numerology to neurology, art to science – explore these through a collaborative presentation based on NEUROSCIENCE: the science behind why we do what we do and feel what we feel.

We’ll ponder the imponderable and examine ourselves by learning about the mysteries of the brain. You’ll be able to work out your mind with some “AHA!” driven activities. Our Mad Scientist, David L. Kay, has lived and worked at the intersection of applied learning, behavior analysis, and computer and video technology for over three and a half decades. His fascination with the brain stems from experiences with igniting it, for fun and work!

Segafredo Bayside Grand Opening Celebration

From the partners of Segafredo L’Originale on Lincoln Road, the new Segafredo Bayside is now open at Bayside Marketplace’s waterfront plaza. The newly built, state-of-the-art kiosk with a full self-contained kitchen and an expansive full bar will host a grand opening party with complimentary Prosecco and a live show with Spam All Stars.

Located on the amphitheater waterfront plaza, the 580 square-foot kiosk and 2,500 square-foot outdoor space boasts two large letters “S” in the logo’s style, signature red and black table tops as well as Segafredo’s branded color red throughout. Luca Voltarel, co-owner and partner of both franchises, along with Graziano Sbroggio of Graspa Group, and Mark Soyka envision an extension (with a “mainland” twist) of the successful music-driven lounge café in Miami Beach.

Seating 90 guests, Segafredo Bayside offers an extensive cocktail menu and casual bites. Craft cocktails include Lincoln Road’s favorites such as the Aperol Spritz and the Pim’s Cup adding a local focus with an abundance of drinks made with fresh fruits, herbs and spices, and local Wynwood Brewery beers on tap.

The menu will reminisce of the Miami Beach location’s Italian light fares with tapas, salads, paninis, pizzas and wraps. Most dishes will incorporate a typically Italian ingredient such as prosciutto, speck, fresh burrata cheese and more. Fresh produce will carry through as well.

“Our Segafredo concept was ready to cross the bridge and Bayside is a waterfront location we thought was a great match to our vision,” states Voltarel. “Downtown Miami is destined to incredible growth and we want to be part of it as it becomes a destination not only to national and international visitors, but locals on special occasions such as concert or Heat game at the AAA, and young professionals and urban residents within just a few blocks from us.”

The decision to choose Bayside as Segafredo’s second location by the Graspa Group was based on Bayside Marketplace’s plans to expand and upgrade the mall site including common areas and waterfront plaza, the two-level parking garage as well as new retail space and the erection of the Skyrise observation tower.

Graspa Group will open a third location, yet to be solidified, for the Segafredo franchise within the Downtown, Midtown, Design District area by 2016.

Kreemart presents Alexandre Arrechea at CIFO Miami Art Basel 2015. In collaboration, Kreemart and Arrechea are exploring a series of written word sentences translating into sounds that one might encounter in daily life provoking a sense of nostalgia.

Sounds that one may or may have not actually experienced are being brought as a challenge and in order to encounter this experience, we invite our audience to break free from contained boxes. This may be seen as a liberation of contained memories or dream like states that reside in the psyche. Once unleashed, can written word provoke the imagination enough for someone to actually experience sound through silence?

These sentences are phrases that are meant to arouse or keep our curiosity. The act of hitting with a hammer reveals another blow, another friction and echoing each sentence that runs in our memory as a sound.

The boxes containing each sound are made of sugar. Our audience may taste the fondant or just let it go it go on the floor. The exploration is abstraction of taste through sound. The taste here is not be the central experience but the abstraction of it.

Cost: $20.00

California based artist, Blair Martin Cahill exhibits sculptures and other works that present a completely unique art series, from December 2-6, 2015 at SPECTRUM Miami located in the Arts + Entertainment District. Cahill’s work explores the fragile and impermeable through the juxtaposition of dissimilar materials in her work, such as steel and silk, making it clear that strength should not be judged by perception alone. Her new work, which will be debuted at SPECTRUM Miami, is a concise collection of sculptural embroidery with a definite contemporary edge. With Sphere 30, Cahill employs embroidery with vivid sculptural effects — rich blue, greens and silvers permeate delicate silk suspended within a dissected sphere of stainless steel. Suspended over a highly polished base of metal, the sphere appears to glow from within. The center rings of Sphere 30 (48″ W X 80″ L X 45″ H) are some of the largest embroidered areas to ever have been produced. Being shown for the first time, See no Evil, highlights three Japanese ladies embroidered on almost translucent silk in a folding screen of maple and brushed aluminum. The ladies gaze from the screen intently, watching but not passing judgment as they speak, see and hear no evil. Cahill has exhibited extensively this year in the United States and abroad including Apricot Gallery London, UK; Amsterdam International Art Fair; and Governor’s Island Art Fair, New York City; Los Angeles Center for Digital Art, Los Angeles California; Art San Diego, San Diego California.

Opening Preview: Wednesday, Dec. 2 / 6-10pm

MIAMI’S YOUNG LEADERS UNITE FOR GOOD
22 Organizations co- host the 4th annual Young Professionals Holiday Happy Hour,
100% of the proceeds benefit PATCHES Miami, FL, December 1, 2015– In the spirit of the season, Miami’s young professionals’ organizations (22 in total) will join forces on Tuesday, December 1st at 6:00 PM to raise a glass and funds for PATCHES. The joint Holiday Party tradition was started in 2012 when a group of friends were inspired to unite the young leaders in South Florida for one cause, and one epic celebration. The event is designed to welcome and include all groups and has true charity at its root purpose. Although many of the participating co-hosts exist to raise awareness and resources for their own causes – for this one event, the groups put their own needs aside and raise funds for an unaffiliated cause. This gesture and united effort embodies the holiday spirit and message.
“Events like the #YoProHHH make me feel proud to be a young professional in Miami because they showcase our value of community. There is a lot more to this event than mere boozing and schmoozing. Hundreds of young professionals from a variety of different faiths, backgrounds and professions will unite to ring in the holiday season in support of a local nonprofit. What is the value of young professionals uniting in this way you ask? Uniting young professionals in this way facilitates in the development of philanthropic values that they will carry on for the remainder of their lives and pass on to the next generation, that’s what.” – Jeffrey Greenberg, Jewish National Fund, Miami-Dade Director
“Giving back is an integral part of my professional and personal life. Like many of the leaders of Young Professionals groups, I am involved in many different organizations as it’s incredibly fulfilling. I was given much and in return love to give back. Realtors are the heart of a community and I strongly feel it is our duty to return to the community what it gives to us. A community is just that, it’s a group of people giving back to each other; what are we without each other?” – Christina Pappas, Realtor/Assistant District Sales Manager, KEYES Realty In its 4th year, the 2015 event will be held at the InterContinental Miami (100 Chopin Plaza, Miami, FL 33131) with expected attendance to exceed 300 – a testament to the thriving community of new leaders that call Miami home. Participating organizations represent professional associations, chambers of commerce, corporate affinity groups, alumni associations, and not-for-profit volunteer corps. The entry fee is $10 for pre-registered guests, and $15 at the door. Tickets available at: http://bit.ly/YoProHHH2015

A true multidisciplinary artist, Fab also explored film, music and television projects, collaborating on the cult classic film Wild Style, producing rap videos for artists including Queen Latifah, KRS-One, and Shabba Ranks, and hosting Yo! MTV Raps, an assignment that established his image as one of the godfathers of the hip-hop scene.

The title of the exhibition, Intersections (after Lautréamont) refers to the notion of beauty and how, during each era, art is responsible for reformulating, subverting, and/or proposing alternative ways of understanding beauty. There is no single criterion in the exhibition, opening spaces for tense intersections, armed with both correspondence and friction. Placing the questions raised by the works of this year’s winners through the prism of this new juncture in the city that hosts them, could produce moments of estrangement, disturbing crossroads, poetic collisions. That is already an initial point of convergence, among other possible intersections offered by this exhibition: on one hand, the changes produced in the Miami scene in relation to Latin America; on the other hand, the wide range of concerns that occupy the award-winning artists.

The Miami Center for Architecture & Design (MCAD) is proud to announce LISTEN TO THIS BUILDING, a collaborative project between MCAD and EXILE Books, a Miami-based, pop-up artist’s book store. LISTEN TO THIS BUILDING is a groundbreaking program that seeks to bridge the understanding between downtown Miami architecture, independent publishing, and accessibility, specifically addressing visual impairments. Opening September 3, 2015, the exhibition coincides with the 25th anniversary of Americans with Disabilities Act.

LISTEN TO THIS BUILDING will transform ten Downtown Miami buildings into a living, multimedia tableau via four main components:

The MCAD gallery will feature tactile relief works of selected downtown buildings with accompanying wall texts provided in braille.

The public, front steps of the Miami Center for Architecture and Design (MCAD) will house the project’s central component: an outdoor audio piece that will share engaging stories about the Old U.S. Post Office and Courthouse (MCAD’s home) as well as surrounding downtown buildings. The audio installation will be accompanied by a large, vinyl, floor applique inviting passersby to “LISTEN” to the building.

To further enhance the exhibit, students from FIU’s College of Architecture + the Arts (CARTA) at Miami Beach Urban Studios will create models of selected downtown buildings using a 3-D printing process. These renderings will be displayed in covered boxes obscuring their visual properties so that audiences must feel the building to experience the architecture.

To commemorate the exhibition, EXILE Books will also produce an artist’s book in which the architectural narratives from the outdoor audio piece will be transcribed in braille. There will be no photographs or printed text in the publication, only tactile reliefs of each building, effectively compelling the viewer to experience Miami through new and distinct paradigms.

The exhibition is believed to be the first architectural exhibit designed to address accessibility for persons with visual impairments. MCAD and EXILE Books will co-host a slate of weekly events during the six-week exhibition to engage the public on issues of art, architecture, and accessibility. The exhibition will be on view from September 3, 2015 to October 17, 2015.

The exhibition, mobility tours, and braille artist book are made possible with the support of the Miami Downtown Development Authority. Support for EXILE Books is made possible through the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Printing and consulting for the project generously provided by Miami Lighthouse for the Blind. Tactile illustrations offered by John De Salvo and Judith McBrien as featured in the Norton’s Pocket Guide to Miami Architecture. Programming partners include Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, Ability Explosion, Florida International University’s College for Architecture + the Arts, and IlluminArts. Additional sponsorship provided by Thomas Printworks and SFCA isaw + Subtropics.

PARTNER INFORMATION

Life Is Art
Life Is Art is presenting a number of excellent local artists showcasing a wide variety of visual art styles.

Yo Miami & Kondoit
A hub for local artists, Yo Miami has grown since 2011 into an ecosystem where creatives can get access to resources & contacts to help them reach the next level of success in their careers. By working with businesses, nonprofi t & community organizations we are able to foster a network which enables us to create opportunities throughout the year for artists to demonstrate their talents in ways that add value to our neighborhoods. With several monthly events at various venues around Wynwood, we continually o ffer a platform where emerging artists can reach a wider audience. At the same time, we show business owners the benefits associated with incorporating arts programming into their operations, & help foster the growth of our local communities through this synergy. For Dwntwn Arts Fair we will be hand picking a lineup from Miami’s top artists. These artists will be live painting and displaying their work throughout the weekend. We encourage you to stop by our booth to meet these up and coming talented creatives to discover what inspires and motivates them, and watch them work live and in person.

Buskerfest
We strive for a connected, thriving urban core where the streets of Miami are active and enlivened with local performers, enjoyed by people of all ages and walks of life. We envision a joyous place that is reflective of the tropical urban landscape and attractive to locals and visitors alike.

Celebrate Diversity Miami
Celebrate Diversity Miami’s 2015 Photo‐voice Exhibit focuses on celebrating the diversity of our greater Miami community with a unique array of large-scale photographs. It features 60 beautiful, vibrant images submitted by residents, schools, and organizations from across Miami-Dade County. Join us in celebrating our incredible culturally and ethnically diverse neighborhoods. Give a #DiversityMiami shout-out with a picture or postcard, and share what makes the place you call home awesome!

FoodSpark
By way of delicious food and great conversation, FoodSpark Miami will provide a fun, interactive gathering space for diverse groups of greater Miami residents to connect with one another, discuss key social issues with fellow citizens, and figure out how we can collaborate to improve the quality of life in our local neighborhoods. FoodSpark Miami is made possible in part by the 8-80 Cities Emerging City Champions 2015 Fellowship, which is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Indiegals
Every indie needs a hand, and we¹ve partnered with artists from all over to bring a uniquely curated expo of artisanal goods, earthy designs, and conscious driven showcases. We¹ve connected with the indigenous tribe from Valle de Sibundoy in the Alto Putumayo region of Colombia, to bring the tribe’s delicately handcrafted jewelry, organic essential oils, and raw incense, led by the tribe¹s artist Yolimar Loreto & the tribe-women. Also from Colombia, we present for the first time in the U.S Hagakure Home a small company based in Medellin whose home décor is derived from organic materials, raw fabrics, and designed with earthy elements. We¹re bringing goods for the home and lifestyle. Then a young, hip, and hippie indie group of artists called Gypsy Halos will be dancing around our tent expressing their love and spirit through flower crowns, leafy jewelry designs, and airy fashions. This movement is not just focused on the younger generation. We¹ve connected with our baby boomer warrior woman who¹s love for mother Earth has helped her develop an artistic eye for floral designs; Esperanza (Hope) will bring to our expo her creative orchid, succulents, air flower gardens. Last but not least, our tent will feature an art showcase called Monsterz, an Anti-bullying picturesque story created by Miami’s local Tuli. We will feature other random goodies, our farmer friends may stop by with organic goods, or maybe we¹ll have a pop-up artist color us alive! This is what Indie Gals does, we dig deep into the roots and help elevate indie creatives so that we can all break through the noise. Everyone deserves to feel the sunshine of success on their face.
