The Coral Gables Museum will celebrate the city’s “First Friday” gallery night on December 2 at 7:00 p.m. with a “Party on the Plaza.” The evening will mark the first event to be hosted by the Museum’s Young Associates Committee, chaired by Cristina Mas. The event will feature a range of artistic works by Miami artists Alex Yanes, Natasha Otrakji, Roberto Chamorro and Alexander Mijares, as well as a live exhibition by Joseph Ferlito. Also on display will be entries from FIU’s 25th Annual Festival of the Trees, a unique Christmas tree design competition.

“The Coral Gables Museum is proud to showcase the works of young Miami artists,” said Arva Moore Parks, Acting Director of the Museum. “The Party on the Plaza is a wonderful way for guests to ring in the holidays and appreciate our local talent in the arts.”

Guests will enjoy cocktails courtesy of Botran Rum, Wodka Vodka and Vita Coco. Hors d’oeuvres will also be provided by the renowned 1500° Restaurant at the Eden Roc Hotel, along with entertainment by DJ John Andrew. The University of Miami Lowe Art Museum presents 150 photographic works by seven photographers from mainland China in the exhibition, China: Insights, on view November 12, 2011 – January 15, 2012. The artists explore the relationship between contemporary photography and visual culture by undertaking the creation of a long-term documentation of one or more aspects of Chinese culture that reflects something vital about China now – whether that is something emerging or something vanishing.
The seven photographers – Chen Yuan Zhong, Hua Er, Jia Yu Chuan, Li Nan, Yang Yan Kang, Yu Haibo, and Zhang Xinmin – earn their livings as either freelance or staff photographers (or, in one case, as a freelance writer). Collectively, these photographers have numerous publications, exhibitions, and awards to their credit, but little of their work has appeared outside mainland China.

“China: Insights complements the Lowe’s rich holdings in traditional Chinese pre-modern art”, said Brian A. Dursum, the Lowe’s Director and Chief Curator, whose area of specialty is Chinese art and pre-modern history.

Six of the seven photographers – Chen Yuan Zhong, Hua Er, Jia Yu Chuan, Yang Yan Kang, Yu Haibo, and Zhang Xinmin – are based in Shenzhen. Just across the border from Hong Kong in southern China, Shenzhen was the first of the Special Economic Opportunity Zones established by China in the post-Mao era, as magnets for entrepreneurs and educated people in all fields. Already a world-renowned center for printing and information technology, among other industries, Shenzhen was a fishing and farming community with a population of roughly 20,000 in 1980. Today it is a booming 21st-century metropolis whose population exceeds 13 million, with an average per-capita age of 30. As such, it serves as a microcosm revealing many of the dramatic shifts in contemporary China. The exhibition moves from the rural scene to the metropolitan context, echoing developments in China today.

While some of these photographers focus on aspects of life in their home city, others look at situations outside of Shenzhen. Their themes include rural Catholicism, matrilineal culture in an agrarian setting, the population shift from country to city, prostitution, gender and identity, typologies of urban citizenry, and the emergence of a thriving pop music/club scene as an index of internationalization. They approach their subjects employing methods ranging from classic modernist documentary to more formally experimental styles. The exhibition’s images and texts make it relevant to such diverse disciplines as visual anthropology, sociology, urban studies, economics, geopolitics, Asian studies, and, of course, contemporary photography and visual culture.

ArtSpace/Virginia Miller Galleries of Coral Gables, which has introduced historically significant artists and art movements to this region and the nation since 1974, will make art history again on Friday, November 4th with the first solo exhibition in the United States of Cuban artist José Angel Vincench.

The Havana-based artist, who has held one-person exhibitions in Canada, Ecuador, the Republic of Cameroon, Switzerland, and leading galleries in Cuba, along with participating in five dozen group shows in galleries in North and South America and Europe, will exhibit more than 150 new paintings and wall-mounted installations of canvas and paper “shopping bags” shaped into letters from his two new series, Dissident and Exile.

Fourteen of the four-foot Dissident paintings, each in a different language, will be in “Vincench vs. Vincench: A Dissident Dialogue from Cuba.” Vincench superimposes a stencil of the definition of dissent in each language over an abstract painting, obscuring parts of the words with a white overlay that allows a faint suggestion of the original painting to be seen.

In her El Nuevo Herald review on September 4th curator and art critic Janet Batet noted that “With a highly rigorous conceptual proposal, Vincench bases his work in art history — specifically the Cuban tradition of abstract art — deconstructing the Cuban reality and encouraging a critical reading. Relying, as central subject, in the social and religious entity that embodies the Cuban, the artist undertakes research areas, typical of sociology, integrating popular beliefs, personal life experiences and current sociopolitical events of recent history of the island.”

In this instance, the artist is targeting the sociopolitical phenomena of dissent. “In Cuba, a dissident is the very worst thing you can be,” Vincench explains. “No one wants to be associated with a dissident. Because I am an artist, an intellectual, I see things differently. I want to show people that dissidence is just another way of looking at something.”
His other way of looking at something turns out to be spectacular, according to gallery owner-director Virginia Miller. “Although these are paintings of words, Vincench’s extraordinary technique transforms them into gorgeous semi-abstractions,” she said.
Rounding out the show are smaller canvases with partially obliterated definitions of dissent and exile, along with five paintings of brick “houses” whose exterior walls can be grouped together to spell out the letters E X I L E. A companion work, planned for the Havana Biennial, is a series of small white houses mounted on trailers. A preview of that project will be displayed on a gallery laptop.

The artist will attend the opening on Friday, November 4th, 2011 from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. and a second reception on December 2nd.

The Coral Gables Museum and the Consulate of Spain have announced a special presentation in honor of Legendary Spanish Poet and Nobel Prize Winner, Juan Ramón Jiménez. The event, to take place in the Fewell Gallery of the Coral Gables Museum, will feature a presentation of the English version of Jiménez’s book Romances de Coral Gables by Ambassador Cristina Barrios, Consul General of Spain. The poems will be read in English and Spanish.

“Florida’s Spanish heritage dates back as early as 1513 with the arrival of Ponce de Leon,” commented Arva Moore-Parks, Acting Director of The Coral Gables Museum. “Coral Gables, in particular, enjoys a very strong connection with Spain that began with George Merrick’s dream of the City Beautiful as a place where the castles in Spain are made real. We are proud to be partnering with the Consulate of Spain for this presentation of Jiménez’s work as it celebrates Coral Gables and highlights the city’s connection with Spain.”

During the Special Presentation, Ambassador Barrios will be joined by renowned poets Maricel Mayor Marsan, writer and Chief Editor of Baquina Literary Magazine and Orlando Gonzalez Esteva, accomplished writer and literary critic. Mayor Marsan and Gonzalez Esteva will also be reading selections from the English version of Romances de Coral Gables.

Juan Ramón Jiménez was a Poet Laureate of Spain who resided in the City of Coral Gables. Recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1956, Jiménez was a celebrated Spanish Poet who is known as a leader of Modernistas, a group of Spanish poets that instigated a Spanish literary revival. Jiménez was also a professor of the University of Miami from 1939 to 1942.

Captain John Jacobsen, a Coconut Grove resident, is a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy, who spent 15 years plying the world’s oceans as a ship’s officer on cargo and passenger vessels. Today, Jacobsen is a harbor pilot at the Port of Miami and the Chairman of the Biscayne Bay Pilots Association. His notes and diaries over the years inform his writing.

Captain John Jacobsen debuts as an author with the release of a witty book entitled, A Commodore of Errors, the first-ever novel written about the United States Merchant Marine Academy, with an enjoyable comic effect. Jacobsen has chosen Miami as the first stop for his book signing tour, where a special reception and reading will be held.

Commodore Robert S. Dickey is the outrageously supercilious title character. Watching him strut, plot, flaunt, and flout his way through the story is in itself enough to evoke mirth. Cernuda Arte is honored to be hosting a one-person exhibition of paintings by Irina Elén, one of the most notable contemporary Cuban artists in today’s scene. The show entitled, When Dreams Come True, includes 22 paintings on canvas, depicted in oil and acrylic. It will be the first time the artist exhibits her work in the Unites States.

The artist will travel from Pinar del Río, Cuba to Miami to be present during this event.
The show will be open to the public until November 14.

The works featured in, When Dreams Come True, have as central focus the convergences of dreams and realities, this best understood as the connecting thread weaved by the artist to unfurl the images of her mythical universe.

In the land of Irina Elén – in her personal magical world – the woman figure is the main protagonist who moves throughout diverse ethereal sceneries recreated by the artist. Committed with great passion to the realization of her splendid works, elegantly finished –of precise execution and richness– the artist succeeds at imbuing them with grace, freshness and metaphor.

Symbols of beauty, joy, youth, providence and paradise abound, together with certain constants that appear and reappear in her compositions, such as– the feminine imagery, the intimate-surreal setting, the sheer pleasure of fantasy, and the marvelous sense of craft.

Irina Elén’s paintings reveal a sumptuous chromatic scheme and an impressive craft. Her meticulous and lyrical renditions are a feast to the eyes and evocative. Her body of work reflects, in essence, the bold talent of a young and promising plastic interpreter.

Irina Elén González (Pinar del Río, Cuba 1978 – ) is a graduate of the Carlos Hidalgo Professional School of Visual Arts of Pinar del Río.

The artist has presented one person exhibitions in Havana at the Casa Osvaldo Guayasamín, in 2005, and in Pinar del Río, at the Provincial Center of Visual Arts, in 2001.

Irina Elén has participated in ten international art fairs, and has been included in over twenty-five group exhibitions throughout her career. Her work has illustrated several children’s books and has appeared in various magazines. The artist has garnered multiple awards and honorable mentions in juried art competitions.

The artist resides and works in Pinar del Río, Cuba.

Mythic Traditions in World Art from the Lowe Art Museum

Sacred Stories, Timeless Tales addresses multi-cultural mythic traditions in art, drawn exclusively from the permanent collection of the University of Miami Lowe Art Museum, which distinguishes itself among South Florida art museums by the depth and breadth of its holdings, which span 5,000 years and represent the art of Europe, the Americas, pan-Asia, and Africa. Concepts of creation, love, morality, mortality, seasonal regeneration, the cosmos, beauty, divinity, heroes, and war are explored in over 100 examples of pottery and ceramics, paintings, works on paper, sculpture, and textiles.

Mythic traditions are rooted in fictitious, symbolic narratives developed by cultures through time, which address the relationship between the inexplicable and the explicable, between the powers and forces that control the world and the human beings who occupy that world. Frequently reflecting regional differences, these sacred stories helped, and in some present-day cultures continue to help elucidate a people’s religion, history, value systems, rituals, and concepts of self. As myths exist apart from, and are not dependent upon, verifiable facts or scientific objectivity for their impact on society, they typically involve deities, heroes, wondrous creatures, and fantastic events. Some renderings faithfully adhere to time-honored visual conventions. Others reflect more personal interpretations of traditional subject matter.

Among the featured objects are a 6th century BCE Greek, black-figure hydria, which describes a myth about the goddess Athena in the presence of Ajax and Achilles; Jacob Jordaen’s The Judgment of Pari, painted around 1620; storyteller figure by Native American artist Mary Trujillo; an African Kuba mask known as Moshambwooy that represents the myth of the ancestral figure Woot; a 19th century Japanese wood-block print that relates a ghost story; Richard Stankiewicz’s scrap metal sculpture, The River Styx, from 1953; St. George by Moises Finale; Theodoros Stamos’ Persephone from 1945; a contemporary metal cutout of a siren by Haitian artist Serge Jolimeau; and a 10th century sandstone sculpture of Ganesha Breaking His Tusk to Throw at the Moon.

Mythological narratives were originally transmitted and preserved orally, during eras when people could neither read nor write, and paper was not available. Written traditions did not develop until a later moment on mankind’s cultural time line, as scribes and poets sought to formally preserve stories in writing, lest they disappear. The University of Miami Lowe Art Museum presents 150 photographic works by seven photographers from mainland China in the exhibition, China: Insights, on view November 12, 2011-January 15, 2012. The artists explore the relationship between contemporary photography and visual culture by undertaking the creation of a long-term documentation of one or more aspects of Chinese culture that reflects something vital about China now — whether that is something emerging or something vanishing.

The seven photographers—Chen Yuan Zhong, Hua Er, Jia Yu Chuan, Li Nan, Yang Yan Kang, Yu Haibo, and Zhang Xinmin—earn their livings as either freelance or staff photographers (or, in one case, as a freelance writer). Collectively, these photographers have numerous publications, exhibitions, and awards to their credit, but little of their work has appeared outside mainland China.

“China: Insights complements the Lowe’s rich holdings in traditional Chinese pre-modern art”, said Brian A. Dursum, the Lowe’s Director and Chief Curator, whose area of specialty is Chinese art and pre-modern history.

Six of the seven photographers — Chen Yuan Zhong, Hua Er, Jia Yu Chuan, Yang Yan Kang, Yu Haibo, and Zhang Xinmin — are based in Shenzhen. Just across the border from Hong Kong in southern China, Shenzhen was the first of the Special Economic Opportunity Zones established by China in the post-Mao era, as magnets for entrepreneurs and educated people in all fields. Already a world-renowned center for printing and information technology, among other industries, Shenzhen was a fishing and farming community with a population of roughly 20,000 in 1980. Today it is a booming 21st-century metropolis whose population exceeds 13 million, with an average per-capita age of 30. As such, it serves as a microcosm revealing many of the dramatic shifts in contemporary China. The exhibition moves from the rural scene to the metropolitan context, echoing developments in China today.

While some of these photographers focus on aspects of life in their home city, others look at situations outside of Shenzhen. Their themes include rural Catholicism, matrilineal culture in an agrarian setting, the population shift from country to city, prostitution, gender and identity, typologies of urban citizenry, and the emergence of a thriving pop music/club scene as an index of internationalization. They approach their subjects employing methods ranging from classic modernist documentary to more formally experimental styles. exhibition’s images and texts make it relevant to such diverse disciplines as visual anthropology, sociology, urban studies, economics, geopolitics, Asian studies, and of course contemporary photography and visual culture.

The University of Miami School of Architecture presents La Habana – an exhibition of photographs by Victoria Montoro

Cuban–born Victoria Montoro left Havana in 1961 and returned for the first time in 2008. The daughter of a former political prisoner, she calls the trip the most important of her life. It was a time for her to reconcile her memories from those invented ones or imagined ones acquired through the years. This body of work reveals how the buildings in La Habana have endured.

The exhibit will be on display from July 7 through August 12, 2011, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sacred Stories, Timeless Tales addresses multi-cultural mythic traditions in art, drawn exclusively from the permanent collection of the University of Miami Lowe Art Museum, which distinguishes itself among South Florida art museums by the depth and breadth of its holdings, which span 5,000 years and represent the art of Europe, the Americas, pan-Asia, and Africa. Concepts of creation, love, morality, mortality, seasonal regeneration, the cosmos, beauty, divinity, heroes, and war are explored in over 100 examples of pottery and ceramics, paintings, works on paper, sculpture, and textiles.

The exhibition will be on view at the UM Lowe Art Museum from June 18 – October 23, 2011. A preview with curator lecture and reception will be held on June 17 from 7-10 pm.

Mythic traditions are rooted in fictitious, symbolic narratives developed by cultures through time, which address the relationship between the inexplicable and the explicable, between the powers and forces that control the world and the human beings who occupy that world. Frequently reflecting regional differences, these sacred stories helped, and in some present-day cultures continue to help elucidate a people’s religion, history, value systems, rituals, and concepts of self. As myths exist apart from, and are not dependent upon, verifiable facts or scientific objectivity for their impact on society, they typically involve deities, heroes, wondrous creatures, and fantastic events. Some renderings faithfully adhere to time-honored visual conventions. Others reflect more personal interpretations of traditional subject matter.
Among the featured objects are a 6th century BCE Greek, black-figure hydria, which describes a myth about the goddess Athena in the presence of Ajax and Achilles; Jacob Jordaen’s The Judgment of Paris, painted around 1620; storyteller figure by Native American artist Mary Trujillo; an African Kuba mask known as Moshambwooy that represents the myth of the ancestral figure Woot; a 19th century Japanese wood-block print that relates a ghost story; Richard Stankiewicz’s scrap metal sculpture, The River Styx, from 1953; St. George by Moises Finale; Theodoros Stamos’ Persephone from 1945; a contemporary metal cutout of a siren by Haitian artist Serge Jolimeau; and a 10th century sandstone sculpture of Ganesha Breaking His Tusk to Throw at the Moon.

Mythological narratives were originally transmitted and preserved orally, during eras when people could neither read nor write, and paper was not available. Written traditions did not develop until a later moment on mankind’s cultural time line, as scribes and poets sought to formally preserve stories in writing, lest they disappear.
