Just as the Impressionists challenged the Académie des Beaux-Arts with their independent exhibitions in 19th Century Paris, or street artists such as Banksy stirred emotion in the streets of London in the 90s, this group of young, forward-thinking artists is shaping the face of their growing world-class city. As Miami grows into a major global city and establishes its cultural identity, this avant-garde collective of young artists has made it their mission to contribute a unique substance to the landscape of culture and art. Calling the burgeoning artistic hubs of Miami their home, their vision is of a Miami recognized for class and connoisseurship in modern art forms, including hip-hop, deep house, nu-disco and the various genres that inhabit Miami’s underground, waiting to burst to the surface. Welcome to our vision.

This event hosted by the Young Artist Initiative will take place at Bardot. Bardot is an intimate live music venue located in Miami’s Design and Art District in Wynwood. A small living room setting mixed with state of the art sound make it ideal for artists to perform and enthusiasts to let loose.

The Miami International Piano Festival’s Four Classical Sundays at Five are intimate, classical, salon-style recitals presented at the beautiful Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. They feature some of the most renowned artists from around the globe and revitalize the tradition of the salon concerts of the 19th century. Young Patronesses of the Opera (YPO), in conjunction with Florida Grand Opera (FGO), is proud to announce the 27th annual YPO Voice Competition. This year, the Finals Concert will be held for the first time at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County. Offering a program of popular and significant arias as sung by today’s brightest young talents.

“We are not only looking to provide new opportunities for budding opera singers,” said Lucie Spieler, chairman of the YPO Voice Competition. “We also want to give the community the chance to experience their talent and fall in love with opera, whether for the first time or all over again.”

The competition began with hundreds of applicants, which have been narrowed down to 35 semifinalists set to audition in Miami on April 26. The following day, a hand-picked group of 12 finalists will perform giving the aspiring stars a taste of their future success.

“For more than 20 years, YPO and FGO have worked together to bring opera to the community in South Florida. This competition features the best young voices from across the nation and the proof is in the winners,” said Susan Danis, Florida Grand Opera’s CEO and General Director. “Past finalists – such as Michael Fabiano, Nadine Sierra, and Elizabeth Caballero – have gone on to successful international careers, singing leading roles at the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, and more.”

Each of the 12 finalists will perform and compete for $46,000 in prizes, some of which include: the Senior Young Artist division (ages 26-30) grand prize of $8,000; the Junior Young Artist (ages 20-25) division grand prize of $7,500; the Troy Moss Memorial prize of $5,000; the Audience Favorite prize of $1,000, for which tickets buyers will have the chance to vote.

The YPO Voice Competition, held in Miami every other year, was founded in 1972 by Irene Patti Swartz Hammond. In 1988, YPO joined forces with Florida Grand Opera to create a truly prestigious national competition, awarding some of the highest prizes in the category. The chairman of the event is Lucie Spieler with co-chairmen Charlette Seidel and Renee Fink.

The judges for the 2013 competition include: Andrew Bisantz, music director of Eugene Opera and an American conductor with extensive credits leading national orchestras and opera companies throughout the country, most recently FGO’s Magic Flute; Gerald Martin Moore, pianist, conductor, and vocal coach who works with several notable singers, including Renée Fleming, Joyce DiDonato, and Rolando Villazón; Maria Zouves, soprano, founder and director of V.O.I.C.Experience in Tampa, and associate director of Opera Tampa.

When the great Argentinean tango master Astor Piazzolla died in 1992, there were few musicians keeping his music alive. But Argentine-born, Brooklyn-based bassist, bandleader, and producer Pablo Aslan has brought an extraordinary focus on tango’s relationship to jazz, and on Piazzolla’s ideas about jazz tango. Piazzolla in Brooklyn, the latest recording by Aslan, was inspired by Take Me Dancing, a 1959 jazz tango recording by Astor Piazzolla. Newly recorded in Buenos Aires with a group of musically bilingual Argentine players, Piazzolla in Brooklyn updates Takes Me Dancing into state-of-the-art jazz tango. Join MDC Live Arts for a one-night performance of the rebirth of Jazz Tango.

Described by the Miami New Times as “the tastiest bitter-sweet candy for fans of wall-flower angst electropop,” Minimal brings an eclectic and versatile mix of indie and alternative rock with electronic flirtations embodied in drum machines, sequencers and samplers. Identified as “Latin-rock hometown heroes” by Fabrikalink.com, Minimal combines these eclectic elements to create an energetic and vigorous live performance, which has enabled them to perform along Grammy winners and internationally known artists such as Aterciopelados, Volumen Cero, Yerbabuena, and Libido.

In 2006, Minimal released their first LP titled Fotos, Cartas Y un Puñal, under the record label Fabrika Music. he Brian Lynch Afro-Caribbean Jazz Artist Ensemble, conducted by Grammy Award winning trumpeter and Frost School of Music professor Brian Lynch, performs original compositions and new arrangements of modern jazz repertory in the exciting and propulsive idiom known as Latin Jazz. Professor Lynch directs his hand picked ensemble of talented young musicians and performs with them as his own group.

Among his many achievements, Brian Lynch has long been known as a great conductor of the jazz jam session. As a member of the house band at the legendary Star Cafe sessions in the New York City of the early 1980s, with Junior Cook and Harold White, and as bandleader of the late night jams at the NY Blue Note in the 1990s, Lynch absorbed the philosophy and practice of the session at its highest level. Now he brings his knowledge and love of the form to Miami and PAX.

Practitioners of all genres from traditional to contemporary, from straight ahead to Afro-Cuban and world music, will be encouraged to participate and cross pollinate, young students and established artists alike. Standards will be kept high and protocol will be firmly in place to encourage the best musical result for players and listeners in the unique and informal atmosphere of PAX!

La Santa Cecilia was recently nominated for a 2011 Latin Grammy for their hit song “La Negra” and is spreading this joy and excitement doing west coast tour support for L.A super house Ozomatli to close out the year!!!

“The music of the Los Angeles band La Santa Cecilia places the group in the late-20th-century movement of Latino musicians in California who search out a wider variety of traditions than their musical ancestors did to create a new pan-Latino aesthetic.” NPR

La Santa Cecilia exemplifies the modern-day creative hybrid. In an era and city in which Latin culture has given birth to many musical fusions, The Los Angeles based six-member band creatively combines up-tempo South American rhythms like Cumbia and Bossa Nova with the nostalgic Bolero and passionate Tango, blending in Afro-Cuban percussion, Rock with Jazzy tunes to bring about a mix that defies any particular label or musical genre. The band’s sound is accentuated by singer Marisoul’s haunting voice, which delivers its message of love, loss and heartbreak in a strong, sensual and powerful performance that leaves crowds mesmerized and women justified in La Santa’s colorful and fiesta-like live shows.

Sookie Sookie, features a group of young musicians with an admiration and respect for this style who are working to maintain and advance the spirit of the music. Influenced by much more than the sound of Grant’s group on “Alive!” Sookie, Sookie is also heavily influenced by John Scofield, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and Charlie Hunter and contains elements of Hip-Hop, Rock, and Soul. This collection of influences that spans across the boundries of traditional genres has created a new sound that is as unique as it is infectious.

Outside of little bits of information picked from the internet, not much is known about Twisted Insane other than the fact that he has one of the hardest, fastest flows in the history of hip-hop. Twisted Insane started out his career homeless selling cd’s just to get money for food and a room. Eventually, Twisted Insane’s buzz grew into something out of control. Fans became more than fans, they became something of a cult. Not “just another rapper” Twisted Insane is the future and apparently those who set the standards agree. Twisted Insane’s flow and rhymes are so brutal and high-speed in addition to often being one of the fans two most common choices for fastest rapper on the planet, that Tech N9ne (the other common choice among fans for the title of ‘the fastest’), the #1 independent artist in the world recently tapped Twisted Insane for an appearance on Tech N9ne’s latest album, the #4 Billboard charting “All 6’s And 7’s” on the the song “Worldwide Choppers”. The worldwide recognition has only intensified the heat surrounding Twisted Insane and with the release of his new video, “Kick Rocks” from his forthcoming album, “The Root Of All Evil”, Twisted Insane is set to blast off into the stratosphere.

Renowned jazz pianist Bill Mays will perform for the Gold Coast Jazz Society’s 21st Anniversary Jazz Concert Series.  “Mays at the Movies” features the Bill Mays Trio performing jazz arrangements of popular movie soundtracks.

This concert is based on Mays’s recent CD, Mays at the Movies and includes musical selections from some of American’s most popular movies including The Shadow of Your Smile, The Summer Knows, Charade and others.  Drummer Marty Morell and bassist Richard Drexler will fill out the trio for this concert.

A jazz pianist, composer and arranger, Mays has played with the best of the jazz world including stints as accompanist for Sara Vaughan, Frank Sinatra, Woody Herman and Gerry Mulligan. His bio includes an extensive list of television and movie scores on which he has played or contributed music. He has worked with legendary film composers including Michel LeGrand, Johnny Mandel and Henry Mancini.  To read more about this accomplished jazz musician, go to his website at www.billmays.net.

"Gospel music was the first music I heard,” says Bill. “Dad played the trombone, guitar and harmonica (at the same time!), piano and organ, and I have vivid memories of him playing the accordion while my mom sang.   Earl “Fatha” Hines provided Bill’s first exposure to jazz when "a friend took me to a jazz brunch and Fatha was playing solo piano,” recalls Bill. “That was the beginning of a love affair with jazz that continues to this day.”

Mays’s jazz career began with the Bill Green Trio in San Diego.  He moved on to Los Angeles where he worked jazz gigs with LA’s best players.   Soon he became a fixture in the Hollywood recording studios as LA’s  first-call pianist for singers where he worked with stars including Dionne Warwick, Anita O’Day, Al Jarreau and Frank Sinatra.

Mays moved to New York and began a fruitful affiliation with Palmetto Records in 1999. "That was a major move for me artistically,” says Mays.  “I found a connection with my trio of drummer Matt Wilson and bassist Martin Wind that was truly special.”  Recordings under the Palmetto label include Summer Sketches and Going Home.   In 2009 he assumed the piano chair in the Phil Woods Quartet while continuing to tour with his own trio.  That year he also produced his CD Mays at the Movies with Peter Washington on bass and Billy Drummond on drums on the SteepleChase label.

Mays is well-known for his compositional and arranging talents. He has contributed music to the libraries of a wide array of artists including Aureole chamber ensemble, Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, Percy Faith Orchestra, Woody Herman Orchestra, Morgana King, Shelly Manne, Mark Murphy, Bud Shank, Marvin Stamm, Lew Tabackin, Turtle Creek Chorale and Phil Woods.

Currently, Mays tours and records in many varied configurations including a duo with trumpeter Marvin Stamm, the Inventions Trio, The Bill May Trio (featuring Matt Wilson & Martin Wind), duo with Bud Shank, a sextet and as a solo pianist.

“If there was a song to learn, I learned it note for note, even if it took me all day”.

Albuquerque alternative rock quartet Alien Lovestock provided a platform for his definitive sound and style and allowed for even more exposure after the band relocated to San Francisco. There, Alien Lovestock collaborated and performed with George Clinton, Storm Large, and other luminaries on the band’s sophomore album “Planet of the Fish”. Charles also continued to work with Alien Lovestock alumni Eric McFadden (EMT, Stockholm Syndrome) and Paulo Baldi (Cake, Les Claypool) and later joined up with longtime Bay Area Latin rockers Orixa whose crossover sound of rock/reggae/funk/ska had helped to garner accolades and to establish the band as the premier rock en espanol group in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2010 Charles relocated to South Florida to join up with long time friend “David Shelley” and his Florida based band “Bluestone”.

Randy Ridenour – a/k/a RED- Drums
Florida born, Randy Ridenour’s style of drumming and personality shine with Bluestone. Randy started playing drums at the young age of 7, influenced by Don Brewer, Buddy Rich, Thomas Lang and Dave weckl to name a few.

The Miami Classical Guitar Society is very proud to present the final Concert of our 25th Anniversary Season, featuring one of the most renowned, iconic classical guitarists in the world, Scottish/Spanish guitarist David Russell!

David Russell certainly needs no introduction. The legendary, internationally acclaimed GRAMMY award-winning guitarist has had a phenomenal performing and recording career and is reaching for new heights with his recent Baroque album. No matter the genre, David’s interpretations serve as references for all who wish to be more complete guitarists, as he occupies a unique position of universal respect and admiration among amateurs and professionals alike. Concert-goers and musical critics alike are amazed by his musical genius and captivating stage presence. His seemingly effortless performances are highlighted by great attention to detail and provocative lyrical phrasing, suggesting an innate understanding of what each individual composer was working to achieve and bringing to each piece an unparalleled sense of adventure. A past winner of virtually every international guitar competition, Mr. Russell is an esteemed Fellow of The Royal Academy of Music in London and in 2003 was awarded the Medal of Honor of the Conservatory of the Balearics and named an “adopted son” of Es Migjorn, the town of his upbringing in Menorca, Spain.

“In the realm of classical guitar, there is a small handful of luminaries whose concerts and recordings have earned them international stature…Scottish-born guitarist David Russell is one of these rare performing artists who has garnered favor with audiences, guitar aficionados, music critics and concert presenters around the world.” -Acoustic Guitar Magazine.

This is the third time the MCGS brings Russell to perform in Miami, and we are honored that he will be here to celebrate this anniversary with us! Don’t miss this opportunity to see Maestro Russell in Concert!

MDC Live Arts Celebrates the Rebirth of Jazz Tango with Pablo Aslan Quintet
Join us for a one-night performance of the rebirth of Jazz Tango.

Local experimental musician Teepee will celebrate the beginning of a three week national tour with his full band at Bardot on Thursday, March 28, 2013. Supporting DJs include Mikey Ramirez from Radio-Active Records, and Mr. Jolt, host and owner of local internet radio station Jolt Radio.

Teepee pairs experimental dissonance with confessional, melodic beauty to create uncompromising, lush noise pop. The group’s latest effort Distant Love or: Time Never Meant Anything, And Never Will is their most ambitious album to date, drawing heavily from sonic innovators My Bloody Valentine, Joe Meek, and Death in June. The three piece live band consists of Erix S. Laurent, Andrew McLees, and Dion Keith Kerr IV.

with Suenalo, Spam Allstars, and ArtOfficial
hosted by Larry Dogg

Local musicians Suenalo, Spam Allstars, and ArtOfficial organize a benefit concert for one of their own – trumpet player Ted Zimmerman. Ted walked out his front door on New Years Eve and was struck in the hand by a stray bullet. Although thankful it wasn’t more serious, it did strike him in the hand that he plays with. Needless to say he has not been able to keep up his work schedule during his recovery. Ted is also a volunteer mentor for the local organization Gogo (Guitars Over Guns) which provides musical mentorship in local schools that do not have music programs. The event on March 24th will raise funds for Ted’s hospital bills and for the Gogo Organization.

On New Year’s Eve, Ted Zimmerman was struck by a stray bullet on his front porch. The bullet (most likely from someone firing into the air) whizzed by his head and went though his first finger, shattering the bone, before lodging in his middle finger. Ted is a professional trumpet player with one of Miami’s most prominent bands, The Spam Allstars, and a highly sought after freelance musician. For the last 4 years, he has also been a mentor with the GOGO (Guitars Over Guns Organization) program, a non-profit aimed at using music to provide at-risk middle school students an alternative to the negative influences that typically dominate their environs.

While he is lucky to be alive, the bullet cost Ted more than an overnight hospital stay and endless medical bills. After an involved surgery on his hand to remove thousands of bone fragments, Ted found out that he was fortunate to not have irreversible tendon or nerve damage. The bullet however shattered the bone in his index finger (one of the three he depends on for playing the trumpet) so completely that the bone could not be fused.

He will spend the next few months hoping and waiting for enough bone callus formation to allow him to begin the long road of physical therapy – learning how to use his finger again by picking up marbles one at a time. The surgeon told Ted he can hope for 50% mobility in the knuckle of his index finger. At best, he is expected to make a full enough recovery to relearn how to play the trumpet flat-fingered.

The Brian Lynch Afro-Caribbean Jazz Artist Ensemble, conducted by Grammy Award winning trumpeter and Frost School of Music professor Brian Lynch, performs original compositions and new arrangements of modern jazz repertory in the exciting and propulsive idiom known as Latin Jazz.

The URGE is a rock cover band formed in 1996. After years of covering a broad range of classic rock, the band now covers newer, more recent rock artists including, but not limited to, Nickelback, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stone Temple Pilots, Jet, Soundgarden and many, many more; what they like to call, “soon to be classic rock”. With hundreds of songs in their repertoire, the URGE is now focusing on a more guitar oriented, heavier and edgier rock that is more in line with today’s sound. The band provides musical entertainment for those who like to rock at all types of settings, including bar rooms, clubs of all sizes and private parties, as well as large outdoor venues such as Bayside and Taste of the Grove.

The four members of the URGE range in age from 37 to 46 and have over 100 years of combined experience playing out “live” in a variety of bands. They are not interested in “making it” in the music business (anymore!) as each of the members are dedicated to other full time careers (and families) in law, construction and computer technology; however, their love of music and “URGE” to perform keeps them together and committed to putting on a show that will keep you rockin’, rollin’ and dancin’ all night long.

DJ Le Spam & Spam Allstars blend improvisational electronic elements and turntables with latin, funk, hip hop and dub to create what they call an electronic descarga. It’s not a known genre. It’s hard to describe. It attracts many types of people. But as they look out and see people dancing salsa, next to break-dancers, and festival-goers driving for hours to catch a show — they know something very special is going on.

Spam Allstars were formed by Andrew Yeomanson, a/k/a DJ Le Spam, who was raised in Toronto, Bogota and London, and has called Miami home since 1993. He got his start by playing guitar in Haitian band Lavalas, and recording and touring with Miami based artist Nil Lara. Along the way he added to his vinyl collection, and when off the road he would DJ locally. These DJ gigs evolved into collaborations with live musicians, performing on an internet radio show, recording in his home studio, and the first of many residencies combining his samplers & DJ skills with a live band.

In 2002, Spam Allstars began a weekly residency at Hoy Como Ayer in Little Havana, which continues today. In 2003 they started monthly residencies in New York City, Gainesville, Tampa, Atlanta, and New Orleans, and playing nationally wherever people would host them. Today they perform 200+ shows, and average 56,000 miles each year.

Combining a daunting array of musical styles and influences to produce a signature sound that is not quite maestro, not quite emcee, this group of two classically trained violinists and their DJ is redefining the music world-one string at a time. With influences ranging from Shostakovich and Bach to Nas and Jay-Z, Black Violin breaks all the rules, blending the classical with the modern to create something rare-a sound that nobody has ever heard, but that everybody wants to feel.

Wow!!! After over THIRTY years, we are still grooving and playing hot Cuban traditional dance music to fans from all over the world. And now it’s your chance to get to know us and have some fun.

In 1973 the band relocated to Miami Florida. Their style is known as Charanga Latin Salsa music. Their infectious rhythms are the result of an instrumental composition which includes a violin, flute, trombones, piano, bass, timbales, congas, guiro and vocals.

The performance of this group is always the utlimate in professionalism due to their discipline on and off the stage. On stage, their act will capture you visually while their contagious music will make you want to move to the irrestible rhythms. This is why they are considered among the best Latin groups in the U.S..

1. To sound, slap, or play upon a
musical instrument, object, or person.

Latin funk. Fusion. Jam band. Multicultural cocktail. Afro-Latin-Baby-Makin’-Descarga-Funk. Miami’s Suenalo has been crowned the Miami New Times’ Best of Miami Awards: Best Latin Rock Band in 2005, and most recently Best Latin Band in 2011. Even the lengthy hyphenated description the band came up with themselves falls short of the true breadth of what they represent. If Suenalo’s one of a kind fusion is hard to pinpoint, it’s only because no one’s ever done anything quite like it before.

Sergent Garcia, an original figure in the Latin Alternative and European mestizo music scenes, is returning to North America with a burning live show a new album out on the Cumbancha label titled Una y Otra Vez (Time and Time Again). A pioneer in blending the fiery Caribbean sounds of salsa, reggae, ska and dancehall with a punk attitude and continental style, Sergent Garcia’s latest musical adventure finds him traveling to Colombia to dive into what is currently the epicenter of some of the world’s hottest sounds. Una y Otra Vez marks this former rocker’s return to his independent roots and renewed creative energy.

Known to many people by different names, Sergent Garcia’s music is as diverse as he is. With a diverse ancestry which includes a French mother, African cousins, and partly Hispanic roots, Sergent Garcia gains inspiration from all cultures that shows in his music.

Sergent Garcia is known for his mix of ragamuffin and Latin Rhythms with Salsa and Reggae in Spanish and some French. Garcia has been making music since 1983, starting off experimenting in Punk, but his career really took off in 1997 with his group Los Locos del Barrio who he toured the world with. His album “Sin Fronteras” was an attempt at promoting musical and cultural tolerance through a mingling of genres.

“Fans of Manu Chao will find Sergent Garcia immediately recognizable: insistently catchy reggae and salsa rhythms, sing-song rap, horn riffs propelling the whole mix.” – Financial Times (UK)
“Now this one here has the potential of becoming one of the first big hits of 2011.” –

R WE WHO R WE mixes the free theft/collage style of Girl Talk with the raw noise of Merzbow. Philip White’s mixer feedback, controlled through a homemade rig of circuits and low-fi electronics, conjures the sound world of legendary experimental musician David Tudor, but becomes something entirely new when fused with the production aesthetics of pop pioneer Dr. Luke. Ted Hearne’s voice – inflamed, athletic and powerfully stark, with the operatic drama of a latter day Jeff Buckley, the experimentalism of Mike Patton and party chic of Ke$ha herself – does battle with his own auto-tune. A tribute and commentary to both classic and ephemeral artists of the pop landscape, R WE WHO R WE uses pop music like graffiti uses public space, exploiting the tension between theft and tribute, like collage artist John Oswald did 30 years ago with his seminal and mischievous Plunderphonic.

Miami-born LeNard Rutledge brings his robust vocals to Sweet Saloon, 7100 Biscayne, March 7, 9-12, in a soul-stirring evening of eclectic jazz. Often compared to legendary Lou Rawls, Rutledge’s silky voice is backed up by Miami musical heavyweights Mike Orta on keyboard, Don Wilner on bass, Abner Torres on drums, and a surprise special guest on sax. In response to the 2006 release of his first independent album, Hello World, the Miami New Times voted Rutledge Best Jazz Artist of the Year. Rutledge’s silky voice and classy elegance have made him one of the most sought-after vocal talents in contemporary jazz.

Lou-Lou Davila-Hagopian’s art comes from just plain down-to-earth music and amazing musicians playing hard, not to mention her Afro-Puerto Rican roots. She can best be described as a frustrated musician who paints music; she will be painting during the music, to capture LeNard’s work on canvas. Her works were recently chosen to be exhibited at the Miami Beach Arts Gala, where one painting served as cover art for the invitation and program, at the Stage Door Theater for a Christmas fund-raiser, Viernes Culturales, and at MaiArt night in the Design District.

Miami, FL (January 24, 2013) In a bold programming move, the Piano Festival presents three consecutive days in homage to the music of Claude Debussy – celebrating of the 150th anniversary of his birth – and the composers who are frequently associated with the French Impressionist movement – Ravel, Faure and Messaien.

From Sunday through Tuesday, March 3 – 5, four unique programs will be presented at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale by some of the world’s most impressive masters of the keyboard.
The Master Series opens with a Sunday matinee performance by Francesco Libetta (Italy), dubbed the “pianist of the impossible” by filmmaker Bruno Monsaingeon, Libetta has earned a reputation for his brilliant and personal interpretations of the classics’ most challenging repertoire.

His 3:00 p.m. recital will include works by the true “Geniuses of Impressionism” – Godard, Debussy, Saint Saens, Fauré, and Ravel. Of his 2009 Festival performance, Alan Becker wrote, “Libetta, hands, possibly taken over by demons, took all of the tortures in stride and left the audience amazed that the unbelievable had taken place before them.”

That same evening, the Festival turns the stage over to Konstantin Lifschitz (Russia), who will focus on a “Tribute to Debussy” in honor of the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth in August of 1862. In 2008 Lifschitz made Festival history by performing both books of Bach’s Well Tempered Clavier.

“Yet so naturally poetic and expressive was his playing that he made it seem as if the entirety of the modern piano repertory lay nascent in these 48 pieces,” wrote the NY Times. Debussy will be no less thrilling in the hands of this great Master as he presents his thoughtful interpretations of works such as L’isle joyeuse, 6 epigraphes antiques, Soiree dans Grenade and all the Preludes from Book One.
On Monday evening, Festival audiences are in for a special treat as not one, but two artists collaborate to bring works by Debussy, Ravel and Messiaen to life!

Konstantin Lifschitz (Russia) and Francesco Libetta (Italy) will showcase the amazing versatility and depth of these composers in their works specifically written for two pianos.

To conclude the 2013 Master Series, the Festival has put together a special chamber program of French Impressionist jewels featuring three collaborative geniuses: pianist, Misha Dacic (Serbia), violinist, Gilles Apap (France), and cellist Dimitri Maslennikov (Russia).

Included in their program will be Debussy’s Violin Sonata in G minor, Ravel’s Cello Sonata, and Fauré’s Piano Trio in D minor. A local favorite, Dacic was first brought to the U.S. by the Festival in 2003 and it was just a matter of time until the Festival could find the perfect opportunity to pair him with the eclectic French violinist, Gilles Apap. Joined by cellist Maslennikov, the Master Series’ grande finale will be Ravel’s Piano Trio in A minor.

Inspiration for the musical content of the Trio came from a wide variety of sources, from Basque dance to Malaysian poetry and is regarded as a technical masterpiece.

After the intermission of each performance, guest lecturer Stuart Isacoff will shed light on the repertoire’s historical context. Isacoff is an award-winning writer, pianist, composer and lecturer who performs and lectures across North America and Europe.

He is the author of A Natural History of the Piano (Knopf, 2011), as well as the highly acclaimed Temperament (Knopf/Vintage, 2003).

“As we celebrate 16 years of a truly enriching and exciting journey into the world of the piano, the Masters Series has become a vehicle for digging deeply into the profound repertoire of the composers,” noted the Miami International Piano Festival’s Artistic Director Giselle Brodsky. “During these intense explorations of a single composer or in this year’s case an entire genre, these musical jewels can enjoy new life in the hands of today’s great masters.”

Up until a few months ago, Miami felt empty.

The shortage of Afro-Caribbean rhythms in a city built by Afro-Caribbean immigrants was downright shameful. We had become the Big Mango tree without roots.

But then Tumbao happened, and Afro-Caribbean beats found a permanent home at the intersection of I-95 and Calle Ocho.

“My partner Danny and I are part Cuban, and we wanted to celebrate our heritage,” says Roxanne Scalia, owner of PAX, New Times’ 2012 pick for Best Venue for Local Acts. “Hence Noches Tumbao.”

Keyboard wizard Charles Gardner pushes out layer after layer of classic tones, from spiritual organ to fat disco synth as he and blues/rock guitarist & gritty soul singer Anton ‘Sanchez’ Rivera create melodies from every and any genre…latin soul, blues, jazz, rock..they play it all…add the stone cold pocket grooves laid down by drummer Daniel ‘Felix’ Garcia, the BIG boom of bassist Mack Henry Moore III and super conguero Danny ‘Quinto’ Naval, and you have the complete recipe for the body moving, ever groovin’ FUSIK sound.

Miami, FL (January 24, 2013) The third in a series of classical piano concerts presented by the Miami International Piano Festival, “Four Classical Sundays at Five” will feature Sijing Ye of China on Sunday, February 3 at Aventura Arts & Cultural Center in Aventura, FL at 5 P.M.

About the Four Classical Sundays at Five Concerts

The Miami International Piano Festival has created the Four Classical Sundays at Five series as an addition to its regular season of programming. These intimate, classical, salon-style piano recitals are presented at the beautiful, new Aventura Arts & Cultural Center and feature some of the most renowned artists from around the globe. In an effort to revitalize the tradition of the salon concerts of the 19th century, each artist is invited to break the barrier between artist and audience by revealing their insights and thoughts about the repertoire, the composers and their fascinating interpretations. This creates a level of intimacy between performer and spectator that is not typical at more conventional recitals. A post-recital Meet-the-Artist reception allows audience and performers to get to know one another even further.

Since 2006, Ocala, Florida’s A Day To Remember have released three albums, sold out entire continental tours and topped Billboard charts. Vocalist Jeremy McKinnion, guitarists Neil Westfall and Kevin Skaff, bassist Joshua Woodard, and drummer Alex Shelnutt have displayed their unmatched musicianship on their previous efforts For Those Who Have Heart, Old Record, perhaps their most popular, Homesick and What Separates Me From You. The foundation of their band was built on a drive to reinvent a genre that was desperately seeking creativity. .ADTR are the poster boys of a genre on the cusp of a new revolution.  The 2009 release Homesick sold over 21,000 albums within the first week, landing it a #21 debut position on the Billboard Top 200 Chart and setting the tone for the rest of the year to come. They are death metal grunts with pop-punk hooks showcasing their characteristic mix of monstrous sing-a-long choruses and mosh-pit-inducing breakdowns. They have perfected a genre and their latest effort, Common Courtesy, enhances their already impressive catalog, hitting harder and bouncing bigger than ever before.

KCC Productions presents “Jazz at Pinecrest Gardens,” featuring jazz vocalist sensation, MARIA RIVAS, and her fabulous Quintet, performing her “Tribute to the Americas”, Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 8 PM (gates open 6:30 PM) in the Banyan Bowl, 11000 Southwest 57th Avenue, in Pinecrest, Florida.  At the Concert, Maria will perform an unusual blend of lively and entertaining music from throughout North and South America, presented in her own unique style and incorporating the matchless and romantic sound of violin. Guests can arrive early and enjoy the truly beautiful and graceful natural surroundings at Pinecrest Gardens.  The Concert is outdoors and the audience can enjoy light fare at the Gardens Gallery and Courtyard. Tickets are $20-25 at http://www.pinecrest-fl.gov/index.aspx?page=440
Maria Rivas recently relocated to South Florida from her native Venezuela, where she is that country’s best-renowned contemporary female vocalist, while being well-known and appreciated throughout Latin America and internationally. She has released 11 CDs containing an exceedingly diverse and entertaining repertoire, and her CDs are featured on iTunes and Amazon.

Maria’s hit single “Manduco” took the number one position on the Venezuelan charts and stayed there for over 3 months, and in the top 10 for more than 3 years.  Ms. Rivas has won numerous awards in Venezuela and internationally for her highly original blend of music, as well as her strong pro-environment and humanitarian stance.

Ms. Rivas considers the appearance of her Band at this Special Birthday Concert to be a wonderful birthday gift to herself and to the audience, as the Band will include a mixture of incredible talents from the 3 Americas.  Performing alongside Maria will be:  The incomparable Jamie Ousley from Tennessee on acoustic bass, with his gift for understanding the Latin-American coda inside its tropical rhythms and swaying movements, always performed with his characteristic elegance.

On drums, Rodolfo Zuniga, a highly talented Central-American drummer from Costa Rica, who like Jamie Ousley, is a music professor at Florida International University.  Mr. Zuniga has toured as a member of the prestigious Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Group and has performed with such artists as Sammy Figueroa, and Arturo Sandoval.

On percussion will be the hyper-talented Edwin Bonilla, a versatile musician from Puerto Rico, who is one of his genre’s best percussionists, songwriters and producers in the world, being invited to perform by artists like Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin, Juan Luis Guerra, Celia Cruz and many more.

On piano and keyboards, nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2011, will be Alejandro Campos, a musician, songwriter, and composer from Venezuela who performed on one of the most important Venezuelan records of Maria Rivas called “Mapale”, and who has produced music for Univision, Telemundo, America TeVe, and others.  Among other recognitions, Campos won an ASCAP Award for the song “That’s Life”, performed by Olga Tanon, a musician with a 28 year musical career.

And finally, as a very special guest, Maria Rivas will present the virtuoso violin soloist Jhonny Mendoza, also from Venezuela, where he is a founding member and director of Cuerdas Andinas, a famous band in Venezuela, for which Mendoza has produced the group’s three albums containing the some of the most important music from the Andes mountain region.  For his sensitivity and talent, Jhonny Mendoza is considered one of most brilliant violinists in Venezuela.

The repertoire which Maria Rivas will be performing will provide spectacular entertainment for the audience.  With Maria’s highly melodious voice and the magical sound of violin, she will begin our musical journey with the Argentinean energy of Astor Piazzolla and his fabulous Tangos, and also the classic Latin ballad, “Alfonsina y el Mar”, then we will fly to the multi-colored expressions from Brazil including Maria’s distinctive renditions in Portuguese of “O Bebado e a Equilibrista” and “Mais que Nada”, then moving ahead to experience Maria’s memorable sound from her native Venezuela featuring her elegant Latin Jazz ensemble and the irresistible power of her Caribbean rhythms and beats, then to Mexico with Maria’s unparalleled and highly original version of Besame Mucho, and then to Maria’s singular interpretations of classic American jazz and pop tunes from the Great American Songbook, alongside her original music which Maria composed herself.  Maria will link together these seemingly diverse musical genres, while electrifying participants with her melodious voice and dynamic presentation.

Franklin’s Wheel creates music that takes you on a journey, through
various moods, sounds and textures—from soothing ambiance to
dynamic crescendos and percussive, upbeat grooves. The music
created by Franklin’s Wheel is filtered through influences that include
Miles Davis, Steely Dan, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, and
Santana. The band’s music is arranged to allow room for musical
freedom and exploration, so no two Franklin’s Wheel performances
are alike.
Franklin’s Wheel is a jazz/rock fusion jam band from Miami, FL,
featuring Juan Gil on vocals, Mike Matthews on guitar, Brian Smith on
keyboard, Jian Beckford on bass, Robert Barcelo on drums, and Rey
“Conga” Diaz on percussion. The band was born out of a desire to
explore jazz/rock fusion in a contemporary alternative rock/jam band
format that pays homage to the rootsy fusion sound of the 1970s. The
band members are all seasoned veterans of the South Florida music
scene and beyond, and bring their diverse influences together in a
unique
blend of styles.
Currently Franklin’s Wheel is working on their debut album, to be
released soon. You can find the band performing at various venues
throughout South Florida and beyond.

Florida Grand Opera (FGO) is proud to announce a new three-year program entitled “Unexpected Operas in Unexpected Places,” designed to bring less-known works to unique venues throughout South Florida in an effort to expose new audiences to opera, with the support of a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation as part of its Knights Arts Challenge. The first installment of this new initiative will bring operatic productions to the Midtown neighborhood for the first time with a tango double-bill featuring Robert Xavier Rodriguez’s Tango and Ástor Piazzolla’s María de Buenos Aires, held at the popular Midtown music venue The Stage.

“Sometimes it’s about taking opera out of the opera house to revitalize the art form for new audiences, bringing them something they consider traditional in a completely unexpected way,” said Susan Danis, FGO’s General Director and CEO.

"Today’s audiences demand to be engaged. The opera’s new format is embracing that challenge by taking artists out of the formal performance hall and into people’s everyday lives and, we hope, reminding them how important and fun the classics are," said Dennis Scholl, vice president for arts at Knight Foundation.

With Unexpected Operas in Unexpected Places, FGO has created an opportunity to tap into Miami’s ever-growing community of young art lovers while also breaking down common stereotypes about the art form being boring, stuffy, or drawn-out. Proving that this production is anything but, the show uses the local bar scene and a standing-room format to put audience members in the middle of the action as the brief, yet sultry tales of lust, romance, and tango unravel around them.

"The double bill is not only dark and provocative, but the music calls for an unconventional setting that mimics the bars and nightclubs of Buenos Aires, where the story takes place and tango itself was born,” said Maestro Ramon Tebar, FGO Music Director and the production’s conductor. “No other city brings nightlife and culture together like Miami. It was a perfect fit!”

This daring production is brought to life onstage by the exciting young voices of FGO’s Young Artist Studio, with guest artists, Maestro Tebar at the podium and under the scenic direction of José Maria Condemi.

A two-time winner of FGO’s Henry C. Clark Award and recently appointed Artistic Director of the Palm Beach Symphony, Tebar has been said to “… achieve perfect pitch and harmony from all parts of the orchestra and, with involved and passionate action, direct the tempo with perfection to motivate the entire orchestra, making poetry …,” according to a review by the Dominican newspaper Hoy Digital [translated from Spanish]. Condemi, who has directed a multitude of operas in varied repertoire throughout the country and abroad, is described by the Wall Street Journal as “ingenious … a young Argentine-born director who makes no mistakes.”

That album entered Billboard’s Top 200 at No. 5, sold over one million copies, spawned two No. 1 hit singles ("Check My Brain" and "Your Decision") and a third (“Lesson Learned”) that went top 10, earned two Grammy nominations and saw the band (vocalist/guitarist Jerry Cantrell, vocalist/guitarist William DuVall, drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Inez) headlining a sold-out international tour that wrapped at Madison Square Garden in New York City.  In a recent interview with Guitar World, Cantrell said, "In my opinion that record stood up to anything else we’ve put out in our career. Hopefully, the new album will connect with people in the same way."

Florida Grand Opera looks to expand the reach of opera with “Unexpected Opera in Unexpected Places.” Designed to bring less-known works to unique venues throughout South Florida in an effort to expose new audiences to opera, with the support of a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation as part of its Knights Arts Challenge. The first installment of this new initiative will bring operatic productions to the Midtown neighborhood for the first time with a tango double-bill featuring Robert Xavier Rodriguez’s Tango and Ástor Piazzolla’s María de Buenos Aires, held at the popular Midtown music venue The Stage on March 21-24, 2013.

TANGO
A product of the highly-acclaimed, living American composer Robert Xavier Rodriguez, Tango is a one-act comic concert operetta composed for a single tenor, sung by Young Artist Matthew Newlin, and a chamber ensemble. Designed to present three consecutive scenes without pause, the action follows the protagonist at the height of the tango craze in 1913 as he embodies different characters to convey the varied perceptions of this seductive and polarizing dance.

This work will be sung in English, using the composer’s own translation of the libretto.

MARIA DE BUENOS AIRES
The surreal plot of María de Buenos Aires is filled with elements of magical realism, a Latin American movement that thins the veil between fantasy and reality. This is the tale of ill-fated María, who was said to be born “on a day when God was drunk.” Living in the poor suburbs of Buenos Aires, María is seduced by the sounds of tango, becoming a streetwalker, and falling victim to a tragic death. The audience then follows María’s Shadow as it walks the city’s Underground, which has become her hell.

This work is being presented in a slightly abridged version that runs for 70 minutes and sung in Spanish.
