A benefit for Ariel Gonzalez & Bryan Modesto with Haochi, The Brand, Armageddon Man, Dyslexic Postcards, Shark Valley Sisters, Mere Quantum Noise, The Gun Hoes, Union, Full time Motherfucker, and more TBA! Our music scene lost Bryan Modesto late last year. Bryan wasn’t a musician but he attended more shows than most. We decided to throw this fundraiser for his family when we saw first hand the astronomical cost of death. Then recently, we were all hit with the news of Ariel Gonzalez’s ongoing struggle with cancer. Ariel is hands down one of the best punk rock guitarists around. Seeing as Ariel’s battle with cancer is a costly one, we decided to host this fundraiser for both Bryan and Ariel. If you can’t make the show but wish to donate please visit their gofundme pages. The “Prince and Princess” of Jewish Music, Neshama Carlebach and Josh Nelson,
To Perform at Congregation B’nai Israel Boca Raton
The March 12 concert is only public South Florida concert

Boca Raton, FL – Congregation B’nai Israel (CBI) will host a public concert featuring the “Prince and Princess” of Jewish contemporary music, Neshama Carlebach and Josh Nelson. The concert will be held on Saturday, March 12 and will serve as the artists’ only South Florida public show this year.

Tickets to the event range from $36 for general admission to $65, $100 $150 for reserved sanctuary seating and can be purchased at Congregation B’nai Israel. The doors open at 7 p.m. and will start with a cocktail party with light bites and a pre-show featuring musical performances by several CBI musical groups and talents, followed by the concert starting at 8 p.m.

“We are very honored and so excited to be able to welcome these top two Jewish musical giants in concert at our synagogue,” said Steve Allen, executive director of Congregation B’nai Israel. “Josh Nelson and Neshama Carlebach are superstars in their own rights, and about a year ago combined their talents musically to form the most explosive, meaningful and rocking show for all audiences. Combining Josh’s rock talents and inspirational writings inspired by his late mentor, Debbie Friedman, and Neshama’s strong allegiance to her late father and icon, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, this is a concert that absolutely cannot be missed.”

Neshama Carlebach, a leading superstar in Jewish entertainment, is continuing the legacy established by her father, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. Like her father, Neshama’s talent and charisma captivate and endear her to people of all ages, faiths and backgrounds. Neshama has performed and taught in cities worldwide, has sung on the Broadway stage, has sold more than one million records, and was a six-time entrant in the 2011 Grammy Awards. Neshama was one of the creators of the Broadway play “Soul Doctor.” Her ninth recording, “Soul Daughter,” features performances by the original Broadway cast of the musical. Neshama is currently touring with a new band and gospel choir and joyfully raising her two sons, Rafael and Micah.

A classically trained musician who is equally versed in rock, jazz and world music, Josh Nelson combines his broad range of influences into a breathtaking musical style that is accessible to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Whether appearing solo or with an elite ensemble of world-class musicians, Josh’s presence and performance style is high-energy and captivating. His music builds community, lifting up congregations and concert audiences alike through experiences that are at once energizing and deeply moving. Most recently, Josh starred as Shlomo Carlebach in the Off-Broadway revival of “Soul Doctor” at New York’s Actors Temple Theatre.

South Florida JAZZ presents the Antonio Adolfo-Hendrik Meurkens Brazilian Jazz Quartet at the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center, 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr Blvd, Davie FL, February 13 at 8 PM. Tickets $40 ($10 students with ID.)

An exquisitely trained classical pianist, Antonio Adolfo has been among the elite of Rio de Janeiro’s jazz scene for decades, where his talent was nurtured with the bossa nova movement in Rio’s Copa section, somewhat analogous to Greenwich Village of the 1960s, actually. Soon, he was touring with legendary Brazilian singers, including Elis Regina and Milton Nascimento. Today, Antonio is a master of Brazilian song. A renowned educator, he established a prominent music conservatory, Centro Musical Antonio Adolfo, several years ago in Rio, which is now run by his two daughters. Antonio, of course, is a first-class performer and perhaps even better known as composer. Herb Alpert, Sergio Mendes, Stevie Wonder, Earl Klugh and Dionne Warwick have all have performed or recorded his compositions. In the last decade, he has been enormously prolific in his recorded output, often featuring his vocalist-daughter Carol Saboya. Included in his discography is an acclaimed 2015 CD, Copa Village, made with Hendrik Meurkens, a frequent collaborator for over three decades. His work has not gone unnoticed, either. A 2014 solo recording O Piano de Antonio Adolfo garnered a Latin Grammy Award nomination, as did the 2015 ensemble CD, Tema.

Hendrik Meurkens is not your basic exponent of Brazilian jazz. He is a German-born vibraphone virtuoso who trained at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He then broadened his scope after hearing the legendary chromatic harmonica legend Toots Thielemans. Hendrik was inspired to teach himself to play and master this capricious instrument and become its most important exponent since Thielemans. Another life-changing musical experience was his introduction to samba and bossa nova. He was so moved by Brazilian music that after Berklee, he moved to Rio de Janeiro to totally immerse himself in the music and culture of Brazil. His recordings and performances have earned worldwide acclaim because of the transcendent beauty of his music, a fusion of traditional and Brazilian jazz. He has recorded more than two-dozen albums as a leader or co-leader. A cross-cultural amalgam guaranteed to touch the heart, the quartet features Hendrik’s harmonica and vibes along with Adolfo’s piano styling, with bass and drums, playing many of Antonio and Hendrik’s stirring original compositions and arrangements.

Also featuring Jamie Ousley, bass, and Carlomagno Araya, drums.

Funding for South Florida JAZZ is provided in part by a grant from the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Division.

Three-time Grammy Award-winning drummer, composer and bandleader Terri Lyne Carrington comes to the Fort Lauderdale area January 9 at 8 PM in “Money Jungle,” an homage to Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach. The concert is part of South Florida JAZZ’s ongoing series bringing the best jazz to South Florida. The performance will be at the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr. Boulevard in Davie. Tickets are $40 at southfloridajazz.org or call (954) 462-0222.

Shortly after graduating from the prestigious Berklee College of Music, she caught the eye of Wayne Shorter, which was revelatory. Gigs followed with luminaries Herbie Hancock, Al Jarreau, Stan Getz, David Sanborn, Cassandra Wilson and Dianne Reeves. After years of extensive touring, Terri relocated to Los Angeles, where she gained attention as the house drummer for the Arsenio Hall Show; then as the drummer on the Quincy Jones late night TV show, VIBE. Ultimately, she returned home where she received an honorary doctorate from Berklee in 2003 and subsequently was appointed to a professorship in 2006 that she still holds.

More recently, Ms Carrington has pursued a successful career releasing seven albums as a bandleader and producer, including the critically acclaimed The Mosaic Project in 2011 with a myriad of great singers, including Esperanza Spalding, Dianne Reeves, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Cassandra Wilson, which won a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album.

In 2013, Carrington released Money Jungle: Provocative in Blue, her much anticipated homage to jazz giants Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus and Max Roach that coincided with the 50th anniversary of the release of their iconic and provocative 1963 Money Jungle trio album. With this recording, Ms. Carrington made history, as she became the first woman to win a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. It is that Money Jungle project and its historical relevance that Terri Lyne Carrington brings to this South Florida JAZZ concert.

MDC Live Arts Continues Little Havana Social Club with The Duke of Bachata!
Joan Soriano brings his roots sound to Exciting Dance Party Series

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) MDC Live Arts and the Koubek Center present the South Florida premiere of Joan Soriano, the Duke of Bachata, at 8 p.m. on Friday, January 29 at the Koubek Center–offering up a roots evening of the beloved Dominican genre. The show continues MDC Live Arts’ new Little Havana Social Club, a dance party/concert series in the Koubek Center gardens, featuring flavorful live bands, pre-concert dance lessons, specialty cocktails, vendors and more.

The Dominican Republic’s “Duke of Bachata” brings old-school charm and modern sensibility to the genre, creating an irresistibly danceable sound that is as gritty as it is romantic. Soriano’s tender crooning evokes the countryside and sweeter times, but the nimble runs and articulate phrases on his steel-strong guitar give an urban, contemporary edge to his music. A practitioner of palo and gaga, he also blends Afro-Dominican sacred traditions with bachata. Together with his family band, Soriano preserves bachata’s roots and expands on them. He is a rare combination of new and authentic.

“Soriano’s music is gorgeous. He displays an emotionally powerful voice, versatility with bachata’s classic style of guitar playing, and compelling original compositions about love and loss.”–Dr. Deborah Pacini Hernandez, author, “Bachata: a social history of Dominican popular music.”
The concert will be preceded by a dance lesson, and followed by a DJ’ed dance party, on an outdoor dance floor under the stars.

MDC Live Arts Executive Director, Kathryn Garcia remarks, “This group is just perfect for a community dance party under the Miami moonlight! We are excited to welcome all who like to indulge in social dance, and look forward to seeing Miami’s Domini can community out in full swing!”

The Little Havana Social Club, in it’s very special home at the Koubek Center, is all about community and mingling–from the dance floor to the domino tables, listening lounge to the food trucks. Next in the series is Miami’s own Cuban salsa supergroup, TimbaLive, on March 18, 2016.

ABOUT JOAN SORIANO
Born in the rural countryside near Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, Soriano is the seventh of fifteen siblings. As a boy he received little formal education, instead helping his father to work the family’s land. But Joan’s destiny was for music not agriculture. Fashioning his first guitar from fishing line and a discarded metal box, he joined his young brothers and sisters to form a family band. Nicknamed “Los Candes” (after their father Candelario) it became a neighborhood sensation. At age 13,Joan hitched a ride to Santo Domingo and went on to nurture his talent working with some of the island’s greatest bachata stars.

In 2010, his first international solo release: El Duque de la Bachata (iASO Records) spent several weeks in the Billboard Top 10 Tropical album charts, won best World Beat Album of 2011 from the Indie Acoustic Project and was on rotation on over 100 radio stations in the US. In 2012, he released La Familia Soriano, which showcased the rich musical tradition in the Soriano family, including Joan’s brother Fernando and sisters Nelly and Griselda. The Soriano family’s newest release Me Decidi, (2015) once again includes Joan’s siblings as well as his newest sister in music, Andre Veloz.

Soriano was the star of Adam Taub’s film, The Duke of Bachata, was featured in Alex Wolfe’s critically acclaimed documentary, Santo Domingo Blues, and was showcased on The Rough Guide’s Bachata compilation. He has performed throughout the USA and Europe.

South Florida JAZZ, the area’s premier modern jazz organization, is especially excited to present The Marcus Roberts Trio on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 8:00 PM. This concert will take place at the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr Blvd, Davie 33314. Tickets are $40 ($10 students with I.D.) and can be purchased from Ticketmaster either by calling 954.462.0222; or online at southfloridajazz.org.

A major force in jazz piano since age 21, Marcus Roberts has won the Thelonious Monk Piano Competition, a National Academy of Achievement award, and the Helen Keller Award. Featured on 60 Minutes (CBS) as “The Virtuoso,” Marcus is an American treasure. This appearance is with his well-honed trio of bassist Rodney Jordan and drummer Jason Marsalis.

Last year Marcus Roberts had his life and work featured on a moving segment labeled “The Virtuoso” on the celebrated CBS show 60 Minutes. The program traced Roberts’ life from his early roots in Jacksonville and his studies at the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind to his remarkable career as a modern jazz musician. Roberts is perhaps best known for the development of a unique approach to jazz performance that features nearly unfathomable left and right hand independence in improvisation.
His blind mother’s gospel singing and the music of the church became imprinted on Marcus’s musical style. Despite losing his sight at age five, he taught himself to play piano, but did not have a formal lesson until age 12. His talent was obvious. Later he studied classical piano at Florida State University under the tutelage of noted concert pianist and pedagogue Leonidas Lipovetsky. Of the many awards that Roberts ultimately received, the Helen Keller Award for Personal Achievement is the most meaningful to him.
A huge boost to his career occurred at age 21 when Wynton Marsalis asked him to join his band. After six years, however, it was time to become a leader. Roberts’ legacy of recorded music reflects his artistic versatility. His recordings include works for solo piano, duets with other instrumentalists, and conventional trio arrangements of jazz standards; as well as original material for trio, larger ensembles, and even symphonic compositions. He recorded his arrangement of Gershwin’s Concerto in F for Piano and Orchestra with the Berlin Philharmonic. Roberts’ release of New Orleans Meets Harlem, Volume 1 in 2009 was the first on his own label, J-Master Records. Since then, he has been a prolific player and composer, releasing a very popular holiday recording, Celebrating Christmas; a nonet recording of an original suite, Deep in the Shed: A Blues Suite (Nov 2012); a collaborative CD of the Marcus Roberts Trio with Béla Fleck titled Across the Imaginary Divide (Rounder Records), and in 2013, three critically acclaimed CDs—From Rags to Rhythm, Together Again: Live in Concert, and Together Again: In the Studio. In 2014, Roberts released yet another suite of all-original music entitled Romance, Swing, and the Blues.
Roberts has long dedicated himself to the development of young musicians. In acknowledgment of his many contributions to music performance and education, The Juilliard School awarded him an honorary Doctor of Music degree in 2014.

Driven by her desire to bridge the gap between art and faith, Stef writes about her experiences in life and uses music as a sounding board.

“It’s not just about music. It’s more than that. We as human beings use art (whether poetry, painting or music) to communicate. For me, I cannot separate what I believe from what I create. I give meaning to what I believe when I create. I believe art, like other things in life, is a reflection of our heart. It’s what makes what we create meaningful.”

Join us for a live performance at La Bodeguita Restaurant on Nov 18th at 9pm to listen to Stef Silva live.

Miami International Auto Show is back for its 45th edition with more surprises than ever. Vitamin C Communications and one of the highest luxury brand cars is inviting you to come view live performances by the newest up-and-coming Latin Music artists on Friday, November 13, Saturday, November 14, and Sunday, November 15. The guests will enjoy the shows while exploring what the new car models have to offer. A meet and greet with the artists will also occur after each performance.

The Miami International Auto Show is considered among America’s top five auto shows. This year Vitamin C and their partners introduce four of the hottest emerging Latin Music artists in the industry. The first performance by Javier Garcia on Friday, November 13 at 7 PM kicks off the event. Garcia utilizes his talents as a composer, arranger, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and singer, to bring together various genres and craft them into his own unique sound.

Saturday, November 14, brings two exciting performances. Tomás Diaz, at 2 PM, a musician from Cuba, starts off the evening. A member of The Spam Allstars, Diaz’s influence by greats such as Jimmy Hendrix, Bob Marley, and Celia Cruz, as well as his experience collaborating with world-class musicians and his undeniable love for music, led him to his successful musical career. The second performance commences at 7 PM by Viva Más, a musical group from the Latin streets of Philadelphia. The group, consisting of five guys, stands out due to their rich harmonies and Latin rhythms, as well as their passion for music and unconditional need to share it with the world.

Last, but definitely not least, Sonlokos closes this year’s Miami International Auto Show at 5 PM on Sunday, November 15. The emerging Latin group formed in 2012 and already received a Latin Grammy Award nomination for Best Traditional Tropical Album this year for “Locos por el Son.” Guests who stick around till the end will have the opportunity to meet & greet each artist.

Cost: $10; free with student ID

In collaboration with the St. Bede Episcopal Chapel, FETA Foundation presents Andy Lee in a contemporary piano performance. The program opens with a piece by Greek-Canadian composer Constantine Caravassilis, Fantasia No. 5, Lumen de Lumine. Inspired by the church bells of Pythagorion, the music seems to emerge from the depths of the piano into lush chords and repeating figures. The second work, Scott Unrein’s “bird-drawn in the sky of light,” was premiered by R. Andrew Lee in 2013 during his UK tour. Written in discrete musical cells, the performer is afforded the freedom to choose what elements of each cell are played and for how long. The second half of the program will be Adrian Knight’s “Obsessions.” Commissioned by Lee, this work presents an extended exploration of stubborn habits, routines, and patterns layered over Knight’s beautiful, extended harmonic language. Do not miss an opportunity to interact with the composer himself, as he is flying in to attend the concert!

In collaboration with the Harold Golen Gallery, FETA Foundation presents Stephen Marotto in a program of music for solo cello and electronics, all of which explore the boundaries of the instrument in a unique way. “In ImagE, Roger Reynolds creates beautiful textures that juxtapose the natural harmonics and resonance of the instrument with virtuosic grace note flurries. Mark Andre knits a delicate sound world, most of which occupies the space on the threshold of silence in iv 2. The music utilizes physical gestures on the instrument that are precisely mapped out, mediating un-pitched materials to create tension. In contrast, Mourning Fog by Rand Steiger features beautiful melodic figures derived from distinct harmonic spectra. The cello is augmented by live electronics. The cello sounds are recorded, processed and then recombined. The final piece, Salvatore Sciarrino’s Ai Limiti Della Notte unleashes the tensions hidden in the residuals of the strings.”

Finalist on NBC’s “The Voice,” Karina Iglesias brings her powerful vocals to Arts Garage Sept. 26. She will be accompanied by her “Nu-Thang,” featuring Brian Robertson, piano, James McCoy, bass, and Brian Lange, drums. Her emotionally charged and deeply personal lyrics revealed a depth of character and vulnerability that can only be conveyed when a singer truly connects with their song. Karina’s classically-trained voice unveils the nuances of her lyrics and adds layers of meaning and emotion that are more commonly found in operatic vocal performances. With her highly-focused artistic vision, rich cultural background and proclivity for harnessing a wide range of production techniques, Karina Iglesias has showcased her strong elements of innovation and heralds a much-needed return to the authenticity of pure soul music.

“I felt like for the first time on the show, that possibly…, the light fixtures were just gonna explode, because [she is] a great singer and [she] really deserves to be here, so congratulations.”
(Adam Levine)

The Everglades Awareness Benefit Concert Series is an interactive gathering to share and voice concerns about our ecosystem. This is not a simple show – we are part of a movement that supports protecting our natural resources and human rights! We are working to strengthen our grassroots network and engage members of our community as we work to stop overdevelopment and political corruption! The exploitation of the Everglades effects us all and we need to recognize the damage of oil drilling, fracking and Turkey Point as major issues. We are advocating for more solar usage – this makes sense in the Sunshine State!

At the same time this event will be very entertaining, positive and fun! We can talk about serious issues with informative speakers while enjoying music, spoken word, dance, live art and good people. This is an all ages event because we want to reach out to young people and families. We strive to inspire involvement and participation. Together we make things happen, so join the fun and spread the word!

For Dwntwn Arts Fair we will be hand picking a lineup from Miami’s top artists. These artists will be live painting and displaying their work throughout the weekend. We encourage you to stop by our booth to meet these up and coming talented creatives to discover what inspires and motivates them, and watch them work live and in person.

Indiegals
Every indie needs a hand, and we¹ve partnered with artists from all over to bring a uniquely curated expo of artisanal goods, earthy designs, and conscious driven showcases. We¹ve connected with the indigenous tribe from Valle de Sibundoy in the Alto Putumayo region of Colombia, to bring the tribe’s delicately handcrafted jewelry, organic essential oils, and raw incense, led by the tribe¹s artist Yolimar Loreto & the tribe-women. Also from Colombia, we present for the first time in the U.S Hagakure Home a small company based in Medellin whose home décor is derived from organic materials, raw fabrics, and designed with earthy elements. We¹re bringing goods for the home and lifestyle. Then a young, hip, and hippie indie group of artists called Gypsy Halos will be dancing around our tent expressing their love and spirit through flower crowns, leafy jewelry designs, and airy fashions. This movement is not just focused on the younger generation. We¹ve connected with our baby boomer warrior woman who¹s love for mother Earth has helped her develop an artistic eye for floral designs; Esperanza (Hope) will bring to our expo her creative orchid, succulents, air flower gardens. Last but not least, our tent will feature an art showcase called Monsterz, an Anti-bullying picturesque story created by Miami’s local Tuli. We will feature other random goodies, our farmer friends may stop by with organic goods, or maybe we¹ll have a pop-up artist color us alive! This is what Indie Gals does, we dig deep into the roots and help elevate indie creatives so that we can all break through the noise. Everyone deserves to feel the sunshine of success on their face.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage with “LECUONA, HIS MUSIC, HIS LEGACY”

Concert will kick off Hispanic Heritage Month and LatinSymphony Concert Series
at Miramar Cultural Center

The Miramar Cultural Center will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a tribute to Latin and Classical music presented by MAR Communications & Services, Inc. Famed pianist, Thomas Tirino will interpret the music of Ernesto Lecuona in “Lecuona, His Music, His Legacy.” The event, part of the LatinSymphony concert series, will take place on Saturday, October 3, 2015, 7 p.m. at the Miramar Cultural Center.

“We created the LatinSymphony series to offer a new appreciation of the richest and most influential Latin music,” says Maria Arreaza, President of MAR Communications & Services Inc. “By showcasing the fusion of Latin and Classical music, the next generation will be able to gain a greater understanding of our culture and heritage, and their contribution to the world of music.”

Thomas Tirino is recognized worldwide for his skillful interpretation of the music of Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona. Tirino is the driving force behind the revival of many of Lecuona’s masterfully crafted compositions such as “Damisela Encantadora,” “María La O,” “Malagueña,” “Rapsodia Negra,” “Estás En Mi Corazón” and many more. A graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, Tirino has performed concerts and given master-classes and lectures on Lecuona’s music all over the world, and has recorded several albums with the music of Lecuona.

Born in Guanabacoa, Cuba, Lecuona composed over six hundred pieces, mostly in the Cuban vein. His talent for composition influenced the Latin American world by raising Cuban music to classical status. At “Lecuona, His Music, His Legacy,” audiences will be transported on a memorable musical journey filled with nostalgia for Cuba’s glory days.

There is no one more appropriate to serve as master of ceremony than Nestor Rodriguez. Born in a Cuba to a musical family, Rodriguez was president of Classical South Florida. He has spent his career dedicated to furthering the arts by devoting his time and resources to non-profit organizations such as the Miami City Ballet, Florida Philharmonic Orchestra and the Chopin Foundation. As master of ceremony he will provide the audience with a special treat before the show conducting a special interactive Q&A with Tirino.

Tickets to “Lecuona, His Music, His Legacy” are currently on sale and range from $55 – $90. Visit miramarculturalcenter.org to purchase tickets in advance or click here. Miramar Cultural Center box office contact number: 954-602-4500.

MAR Communications & Services Inc. is the creator of LatinSymphony, an annual event that celebrates the fusion of Latin and Classical music. For information surrounding MAR Communications & Services Inc. and upcoming musical events, please visit: http://www.marcommunicationsandservicesinc.com.

Captivating, soul stirring, earthy and funky. These are just some of the words used to describe the song stylings of LeNard Rutledge. Growing up in Miami, Florida, LeNard was always surrounded by many different musical styles. His parents had an extensive music collection ranging from Classical, Jazz, Hymns and the funk of James Brown.

”LeNard Rutledge, born and raised in Miami, where there is only a handful of truly great jazz vocalists, is usually compared, aptly, to the legendary Lou Rawls. Like Rawls, Rutledge’s classy elegance is often permeated by the raw passion of his church choir work.”
(Miami New Times, “Best Jazz Artist”)
