Join Miami Children’s Museum (MCM) as we celebrate our tenth birthday on our Watson Island home with our biggest birthday party yet! Families will celebrate with birthday games, activities, and surprises all based on the number 10!

Throughout the day families will enjoy birthday games including hop-scotch, water balloon toss, three legged races, a MiChiMu Dance Party with different cultural dances and will even learn to count to ten in English, Spanish, Creole, French, Portuguese. No birthday party is complete without balloon animals, face painting and cake!

Dinosaurs Invade Miami Children’s Museum

Hordes of Jurassic reptiles will be roaming around the Miami Children’s Museum (MCM) as Dino Island returns.  From June 8th, 2013 through January 5th, 2014, the dinosaurs will make their home at the Museum, 980 MacArthur Causeway on Watson Island in Miami.  MCM and Kokoro, the originators and innovators of the life like museum-quality robotic dinosaurs, will once again transform the Museum’s What’s New? Gallery into a prehistoric adventureland for the entire family. 
 
Enter MCM’s time machine and journey back 230 million years into the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods when giant dinosaurs roamed the earth.  Visitors young and old will explore 2,500 square feet of custom sets that are home for lifelike, robotic creatures, including a Tyrannosaurus Rex, Apatosaurus, Triceratops mother and baby, Maiasaura family, and a suspended Pteradon.  Children will see them walking, feeding, roaring, fighting, hatching and caring for their young, all acting and interacting with captivating realism. Families will stay clear of the volcano that erupts periodically with sound, lights and smoke, experience a murky swamp with bubbling water, and relax in a cave with a “fireside” reading nook area and much more. 

Dino Island will entertain and educate children as they learn about scale through an interactive light display, experience the magnitude of dinosaurs’ size with a life size footprint, learn the difference between meat and plant eating dinosaurs, and discover the evolution of dinosaurs into birds, their closest living descendents.  In addition to fulfilling the fascination, children and families will experience dinosaur habitats, unearth mysteries at a fun fossil dig station, and create unique pieces of art at rub stations.

Time Travel Easy and Exciting at Miami Children’s Museum’s Summer Camp

Fees are $198.00 per week for MCM members and $220.00 per week for Non-Members. Fee also includes a camp t-shirt and a Subway lunch is available for an additional fee. Parents are encouraged to register prior to the start of camp to avoid the $20.00 walk-in fee at the start of every week.  Before Care is available at $25.00 per week while After Care is $60.00.

Campers must bring their own lunch and snack or purchase them from our Subway location.  MCM also offers extended care that caters to working parents and their busy schedules. Now your children can spend the summer traveling through time to new and exciting adventures.  Miami Children’s Museum presents another summer of fun with their Time Travel Summer Camp at the Museum located conveniently between Downtown Miami and Miami Beach for 11 weeks.   Campers from Pre-K (3  years) through 5th Grade will enjoy a fun-filled learning experience as they travel through time from the very prehistoric beginnings to way into the future, while developing new interests, and making new friends.  And when they travel to the land of Dinosaurs, they can experience the Museum’s latest hands on attraction, Dino Island, which opens on June 8th. Campers can join camp for a week or all summer long!

Whether part of MiChiMu Travel Team 1 (Pre K – 2nd Grade) or part of Team 2 (3rd to 5th Grade), campers can experience weekly time travel adventures, all within a safe hands on learning environment. Each week we will visit a different time period through interactive stories, hands-on projects, performances, and more! Campers will participate in fun and unique activities that support literacy, health and nutrition, art making and creative thinking skills.

From Dinosaur Time Machine to Heroes and Heroines of Ancient Greece to Tea Time with the Emperor to MCM into the Future and more, there is a world of exciting adventures to be found each week.  Campers will also study Ancient Egypt, Rome and Mayan civilizations and check out the Ice Age and dive deep down into the South Florida seas.  Classes include explorations of the museum’s galleries, playgrounds, and field trips (for campers ages 7-10 only).

Class times are 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Before Care (7:45–9 a.m.) and After Care (4–6 p.m.) are offered at an additional cost.
 
Students in classes involving field trips will depart from the Miami Science Museum at 9:10 a.m.

The Miami Science Museum is gearing up for its 47th Annual Summer Camp! During the eight one-week camp sessions, kids aged 4-14 will enjoy engaging, unique, fun-filled experiences including ecology, robotics, engineering, technology, field trips and more. While camp activities will be specific to the session chosen each week, each class will feature science lessons, projects, experiments, and crafts, interspersed with time to explore the museum galleries, planetarium or theater shows, and a 30-minute outdoor PE time. Campers in the 2nd through 8th grade groups will also go on field trips.
 
Classes are offered in the following age categories (campers must be entering the grade(s) of the group in August 2013):
Pre-K (age 4 as of August 2013; must be potty-trained and able to handle all aspects of using the restroom alone)
Kindergarten
1st Grade
2nd & 3rd Grades
4th & 5th Grades
6th, 7th & 8th Grades

Instructor to camper ratio is 1:10. Lead teachers are certified teachers with over 5-10 years of teaching experience in Miami-Dade County public and private schools, who will deliver hands-on, interactive learning. Each lead teacher has experience working with children in the grade level to which they are assigned. Each class will also have a teaching aide.
 
Campers should bring their own lunch. Two healthy snacks will be provided each day.
 
Miami Science Museum 2013 Summer Camp is made possible by the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners. The Children’s Trust provides funding for scholarships to non-profit organizations that enable abused, neglected, and disadvantaged children to attend summer camp classes.

Miami Children’s Museum Takes Kids on a 50-State Learning Adventure in the WEEBLES Coast to Coast Exhibit

Children and families are invited to take a trip across the United Sates in Miami Children’s Museum’s new educational WEEBLES Coast to Coast exhibit, January 26 through May 5, 2013.

In the exhibit, created by Milwaukee’s Betty Brinn Children’s Museum in collaboration with Hasbro, Inc., visitors will travel to each of the 50 states to explore U.S. geography, history and culture. Exhibit activities feature favorite American travel, sports and leisure pastimes, music from across the nation, and fun and important information about well-known people, places and historical events. Children will power a riverboat down the Mississippi, hit a home run at Fenway Park, build the Saint Louis Gateway Arch, ride a mule into the Grand Canyon, snorkel in Hawaii, explore the Florida Everglades and much more!

Visitors will enjoy planning their “trip” with a giant U.S. map and a touch-screen kiosk featuring the country’s geographic regions, important state facts, national landmarks and popular tourist destinations. Murals of beautiful American landscapes provide the backdrop for engaging play areas that represent U.S. regions: Western, Mountain, Southwest, Midwest, Southeast and Northeast, and create memorable stops at the seaside, mountains, forest and desert. A special reading area is dedicated to U.S. geography, history, travel, and the idea that “a book can take you anywhere!”

The 2,500 sq. ft. exhibit is designed for children ages 4 -10. Hands-on activities present opportunities for children to build cognitive and social skills, be physically active, curious and imaginative, and express themselves through music, movement and art. Educational content in the exhibit reflects developmental milestones for early learners set by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and national academic standards for school-age children.

Baby Block Builders- We will take out blocks for our younger visitors to play with and practice hand-eye coordination and motor skills. An educator will be there to facilitate imaginative play.
Weebles World Sandbox- Our giant sandbox has been infested with Weebles! Children can make up a whole world and stories for the different characters while they play in the sand.
Track a Florida Panther- Children will learn directions and how to use a compass with this activity. An educator will meet them in the Weebles gallery and show them how to use a compass to move in certain directions. The children will then get a scavenger hunt with directions like “Go south for about 20 steps, or until you see a sign from the panther.” We will put picture clues around the museum they will find, and the final picture of the panther will be up in the teddy bear gallery. If they write the correct location of the panther on their paper, they will get a prize at the front desk.
Rock n Roll Dance Party- Children will be able to get their groove on to classic American hits
American Character Story Time- We will have children’s stories that tell the story of important American historical figures, ie Amelia Earhart and John Adams. One of our educators will then dress up as the character and read “their” story to the children.
State of the Day- Educators will pick out a state, show the children where is located, and talk about what is important about that state. Afterwards, they will do a activity with the children, i.e. a Hawaiian hula lesson or make monarch butterflies since they are the state insect of Alabama.
Campfire Circle Time- We will set up a pretend bonfire and pop up tent in the gallery and gather the children around. Educators can then teach a sing-a-long (like the Fifty Nifty United States and other patriotic songs) or teach wilderness skills (like how to set up a bonfire, pack for a camping trip, or use a compass)  or just pretend play with the children while explain normal camping activities. Each activity is dependent on the age and amount of children.
Space Needle Challenge-  This is another name for the Marshmallow Challenge. Contestants will try to make the tallest free standing structure out of the given materials that will support the marshmallow on the top, so the entire structure will resemble the Space Needle.

The purpose of this event will be for kids to make their own picture frame and put a photo no larger than 8×10 in it . Miami Science Museum’s 2nd Annual Miami Underwater Festival to Feature Prize-Winning Films, Fish On Display, Kids’ Activities And More

Miami Science Museum is collaborating with Festival Mondiale de l’Image Sous-Marines (World Festival of Underwater Images) from France to present its 2nd Annual Miami Underwater Festival. Highlighting a selection of prize-winning films from the 39th Festival Mondiale de l’Image Sous-Marines, the festival will showcase renowned artistic, photographic and cinematographic productions related to the underwater world. Films will be shown in French, English and/or Spanish.
 
Activities throughout the festival will include a special airing of a film by Ted Caplow (Fish Navy Films) on Saturday December 1st in the afternoon, special airings of WPBT’s Changing Seas episodes, special guest speakers, live fish, marine-themed kid-friendly activities, and much more.
 
On Saturday, Dec. 1 from 10:00am until 12:00pm, the Museum will offer a French breakfast along with French films as part of French Week and in collaboration with the French Consulate. The breakfast and screenings are included with admission.
 
Also on Saturday, Dec. 1 from 6:30pm until 8:30pm, the Museum will present a Centers for Ocean Science Education Excellence (COSEE) Florida/National Science Foundation sponsored event, showcasing films from the Beneath the Waves Film Festival founded by local graduate students from the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.  Reservations are required for this event.

The public is invited to attend the official opening of the Miami Science Museum’s and Junior League of Miami, Inc.’s new “Busy Buzzing Bee Hive” observation exhibit for parents and children. Members of the Junior League, their children and representatives of the Museum will unveil the exhibit. Attendees will enjoy an opening presentation by beekeeper Inese Bunch from Bunch Farms, LLC, who was integral to the creation of the exhibit, along with the unveiling of the exhibit and a bee puppet show.
 
The Junior League of Miami, which takes pride in having founded the Miami Science Museum as a community children’s museum in 1949, donated $5,000 to create the exhibit. Junior League members also assisted in developing hands-on activities for small children related to the bee hive exhibit, which will be available on an ongoing basis in the Museum’s early childhood Discovery Room. These activities are part of the Museum’s ECHOS® (Early Childhood Hands-On Science) comprehensive early childhood science curriculum.
 
By observing the bees up close in their hive, parents and children will learn about the importance of relationships between animals (including humans) and plants (pollination), become more aware of agricultural practices (honey production), and witness non-human systems of communication, social organization and cooperation (the bee hive).
 
Bunch Farms beekeepers retrieved the exhibit’s bees from an avocado tree behind the Museum building, transported them to the farm where they observed and maintained them for a while, and later installed the hives in their new permanent location at the Museum. This process was necessary so that the bees would accept their new “home” at the Museum, and not return to the avocado tree.
 
“Honey bees are an engaging subject to which both parents and children can easily relate,” said Miami Science Museum CEO & President Gillian Thomas. “We would like to thank Junior League of Miami President Katie Lane Arriola and past President Dana Martorella for the League’s dedication to creating and giving continued support to the exhibit, and to Bunch Farms for providing us with their expertise and passion for bees.”

Families are invited to attend the “Fall Thing” event, a free, fun-filled, festive and safe Halloween celebration open to the public at Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s Hank Kline Club on Oct. 31. Kids are encouraged to dress up in costume for the event, which will include rides, games, a rock wall, face painting, balloons, costumes and characters, costume contest, food trucks, and candy galore.
 
The event is organized by Kevin and Shari Sutherland of Mosaic Miami Church. Mosaic Miami Church is also donating $2,000 to Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade, which serves 10,000 boys and girls in Miami-Dade County with positive programs year-round. 
 
While at the event, guests can enjoy Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s pumpkin patch, also located at the Hank Kline Club. The patch was voted one of the best six pumpkin patches in South Florida by CBS Miami in 2011. Proceeds from the pumpkin patch benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade.

During this event to honor National Astronomy Day, guests will find out answers to these questions and discoverlots more amazing things about the universe and how it works. They will conduct their own experiments, observe the night sky through the Museum’s rooftop telescopes, watch planetarium and laser shows, and listen to keynote speaker Professor Rafael Guzman, Chair of the Department of Astronomy at the University of Florida, who will talk about the largest optical telescope on Earth, theGran Telescopio de Canarias. The event will also feature an exhibition of images of outer space created by students and with support from the Smithsonian’s Youth Capture the Colorful Cosmos program. Guests can even safely observe the sun with solar telescopes from the Southern Cross Astronomical Society.
 
On Friday evening, guests will enjoy observing the night sky on the rooftop. To celebrate Halloween and an almost full moon, guests on Saturday are encouraged to come dressed in their most out-of-this-world costumes and have a chance to win a prize. Also on Saturday, Professor Guzman will speak and guests will enjoy solar observing with the Southern Cross Astronomical Society.

See an exhibition of student-created scientific artwork. Just like scientists take raw images of the night sky and create spectacular colorful images of the cosmos, students have remotely used real NASA telescopes to take their own images of outer space. Then they used the same kind of software that astronomers use, and processed their images to bring out all the wondrous detail of galaxies, nebula, and planets. Students not only learned the software and created the images on display, but they will also be on-hand during the AstroJam event to lead activities related to telescopes, color filters, and light.
 
Youth Capture the Colorful Cosmos is funded by the Smithsonian Institution’s Youth Access Grants program managed by the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Education and Access. The project is led by the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, in partnership with Smithsonian Affiliations.
 
Science Fiction, Astronomy and Experimental Film Screening

Experience the finest cinematic treats screened in super fresh Super 8 and 16mm film formats. This event will feature science fiction, astronomy and experimental films, including NASA Aeronatics and Space Report 106 (1973), Powers of Ten (1977), Algol the Demon Star, and The Motions of Attracting Bodies in addition to many surprises screened in crowd-pleasing 16mm film format. Thrilling musical interventions provided by Kian &Gyr.
 
This is the only movie night in town that screens films in vintage and obsolete Super 8 and 16mm format.
 
Hosted by film historian/archivist Barron Sherer and Miami Science Museum’s Art & Collection Manager Kevin Arrow. Barron Sherer is a Miami-based film curator, programmer and artist. For over 20 years, he has curated and co-produced many film programs and festivals for local cinemas, museums, galleries and moving image archives. As a film and video archivist and preservationist, he has researched thousands of moving images for several award-winning productions including Academy Award nominated films such as The Weather Underground, Milk and The Cove. In 2006, the Miami New Times named Barron “Best Film Buff.”

We’re off to see The Wizard of Oz, as Miami Children’s Museum (MCM) hosts the return home of the first-ever, licensed traveling educational exhibit based on the beloved movie classic. The Wizard of Oz Children’s Educational Exhibit is set to return to MCM September 22, 2012.

Created by MCM and licensed by Warner Bros. Consumer Products, this interactive fantasy-adventure takes children and families over the rainbow to continue the celebration of the film’s 70th anniversary milestone. The Wizard of Oz Children’s Educational Exhibition debuted first in Miami in 2010 before traveling to other major cities, including Boston, New York, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh and many others.

And you don’t need to ride a tornado to get there. Just come to Miami Children’s Museum, on Watson Island, at 980 MacArthur Causeway. The Wizard of Oz Children’s Educational Exhibition is a journey of self-discovery for the whole family! Guests travel from the Gale Farm to the colorful Land of Oz, where they explore Munchkinland, The Crossroads, The Witch’s Castle and The Emerald City before heading back over the rainbow to Miami, because, of course, “There’s no place like home.”

Along the way, everyone will experience the adventures of Dorothy and her friends as they find their way back to true happiness. Elements of the movie available only in this licensed exhibition include Dorothy’s Ruby Slippers, the characters everyone knows and loves from the film, and classic movie moments.

Visit Professor Marvel’s Wagon and create your own tornado in Dorothy’s bedroom. Explore Munchkin houses and meet Dorothy’s friends the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion and the Tin Man. Enter The Emerald City and create a “Horse of a Different Color,” play at the kaleidoscope and prism stations, but “pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.” Next, climb the mountain to the Wicked Witch’s Castle to capture the Wicked Witch’s broom from Winged Monkeys. Finally, click your heels three times while reciting “There’s no place like home,” as guests depart the Land of Oz

Through its current interactive educational programs, Miami Seaquarium wants to continue its mission of educating students of all ages about the wonders of marine life. Miami Seaquarium hosts several educational programs, such as: Day Camps, Home School Days and “Mommy and Me,” a program for mothers and young children.

Day Camps
Offered as alternatives to Miami-Dade County Public Schools teacher work days, kids K-12 will explore various marine mammal species, what they need for their survival, their diet and what makes them unique. Additionally, students will enjoy exciting animal interactions, shows, art projects, games and marine biology fun. Dates include:

Mommy and Me
Mothers and their children between the ages of two to five may enjoy “Mommy and Me.” During the program, mother and child will learn about different animals, from sea turtles to reptiles. Boy Scout and Girl Scout Weekend

In addition to the exhibits and shows, the scouts can visit booths that are going to be set up next to the Education Center from 10am-2pm to receive more information on the Education programs we have to offer. The Museum will host a Nano special event on Saturday, Aug. 18 to celebrate the opening of the exhibition, featuring additional Nano hands-on demonstrations and activities, as well as two brand-new, interactive Nano theater shows.

Nano was created by the NISE Net with support from the National Science Foundation. Nano’s hands-on exhibits present the basics of nanoscience and engineering, introduce some real world applications, and explore the societal and ethical implications of this new technology. Features of the Nano exhibition include Where can you find nano?, What happens when things get smaller?, What’s new about nano?, What does nano mean for us?, Static vs. Gravity and a reading area.

Kidsart Artists Come Together This Summer To Bring ‘Senses’ Into Children’s Art Camps

Registration is open to all children in Miami. KIDSART takes place on five successive Saturday mornings, from July 28th through August 18th, at various artists’ studios. A final exhibition of the children’s work will take place in September. The cost is a donation of $100 dollars per child, which includes all materials and lunches for the duration of the camps.

Artoconecto’s KIDSART returns this summer with an exciting new series of affordable art camps for children in the Miami area,designed to stimulate all five senses, as well as linking the arts and the sciences in a fun and innovative way. The list of prominent Miami artists who will be leading the weekly camps includes Mauricio Gonzalez, Jiae Hwang, David Brieske, Juan Maristany, Patricia Hernandezand Hannes Bend. Each will focus on a single sense: sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch, respectively. They will create asensory experience for the kids that will not only arouse their perceptions of the world around them, but remind them as well of their significant place in it.

“We often take our senses for granted,” says Alexandra Rangel, Executive Director of Artoconecto. “We move around without realizing their importance in perceiving and defining the cognitive imagery that allows us to interact with the world around us.Most of us don’t realize how lucky we really are to be able to possess all of them.” These camps will bring each sense into focus by adding the artists’ ‘sensibility’to them,and demonstrate to the kids how precious and unique each sense is.

For three years, the local non-profit Artoconecto, with the generous support of the Miami-Dade Dept. of Cultural Affairs, among others, has conducted affordable art camps for children with notable artists in the Miami area. Last year camps were also conducted simultaneously with camps in Croatia. ‘The Senses’ art camps for children will comprise a diverse group of artists, from different parts of the world, who have chosen Miami as their base camp for creation.

Seth’s Construction Zone Debuts at Children’s Museum

Miami Children’s Museum (MCM) will bring the world of construction to life as it opens its newest exhibit, Seth’s Construction Zone on Sunday, June 24th at 10:00 AM. This innovative and interactive exhibit will feature different zones and building stations that incorporate elements of a construction site to encourage problem solving skills, logical thinking, communication and coordination, and teamwork. Seth’s Construction Zone is made possible through the generous support of the Robert & Michelle Diener Foundation.

Visitors will transform into construction workers as they enter this 490 square foot space through a unique tunnel with flashing lights and work site signs. Children and their families will be able to participate in a number of construction related activities, complete with costumes and props to help set the tone.

Highlights of the exhibit include Detour Zone which encourages problem solving, Kids at Work Zone, a soft play area designed specifically for younger visitors, Pallet of Bricks, a fun and challenging puzzle, and two different building stations. Children can even learn how a bull dozer works and can use their own conveyor belt and wheel barrels.

The opening of Seth’s Construction Zone will be kicked off with special programming, Think It, Build It! Day, on Sunday, June 24th from 12:00 – 4:00 PM. Museum educators will lead activities that cover every aspect of building, from the development of projects to clean up!
