As May is Military Appreciation Month, Combat Hippies will perform “Conscience Under Fire”, an original Spoken Word Theater piece that ranges from powerful to humorous and features solos and group work. The group shares their military and Veteran experiences to raise awareness of veteran’s issues and promote Post-Traumatic Growth.

The Seminole Theatre has partnered with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4127, and every Premium Ticket ($47) purchased for the Combat Hippies will sponsor a Military Veteran to see “Conscience Under Fire” and attend a talk-back after the show with the group.

Led by world renowned theater artist and director Teo Castellanos and backed by one of Miami’s most well-known DJ’s, Brimstone 127, The Combat Hippies are a group of military veteran performing artists. The group’s core members consist of Hipolito “Beardman” Arriaga, Anthony “I.E.D.” Torres, Allen “Tatsel” Minor, and Andrew “Dru Phoenix” Cuthbert.

The Combat Hippies were born as a result of the MDC Live Arts’ season-long veterans’ initiative in which they shared their experiences in an original spoken word piece as part of the O, Miami Poetry Festival. The piece, featuring solo and group work, and was debuted under the title “Conscience Under Fire”.

Conscience Under Fire made its theatrical debut on September 11th and 12th at the Prometeo Theater under the banner of Miami’s DWNTWN Art Days.

The MCB School Ensemble Performances on May 6-7 highlight the most advanced-level students in

the School, many of whom will be graduating and starting their professional careers in dance. The

program will feature a variety of classical and contemporary works, including George Balanchine’s

Valse Fantaisie, the third act of La Bayadère, excerpts from Giselle and original works by MCB School

In the theatre, a stage comes to life when the actors begin to perform. So it is with Lina Bo Bardi’s architecture. Her buildings are vibrant when inhabited: they come to life with the energy, diversity and creativity of people.

Lina Bo Bardi: Together pays tribute to Lina’s capacity to engage with every facet of culture and to see the potential in all manner of people. Artist Madelon Vriesendorp has conducted workshops at Solar do Unhão and combined objects made there with others of her own and artefacts by Brazilian craftspeople. Tapio Snellman’s film installation explores the life generated by SESC Pompéia within São Paulo and draws parallels with the city of Salvador. Combined, these two works do not merely recreate Lina’s methods or represent her work, but instead allow a more direct experience through a form of re-enactment.

Assemble designed and built a flexible enclosure, a set of display furniture and a technical system. The exhibition furniture designed by Assemble can adapt to a range of gallery situations and presents the diverse content within one space, without hierarchy. In the theatre, a stage comes to life when the actors begin to perform. So it is with Lina Bo Bardi’s architecture. Her buildings are vibrant when inhabited: they come to life with the energy, diversity and creativity of people.

Lina Bo Bardi: Together pays tribute to Lina’s capacity to engage with every facet of culture and to see the potential in all manner of people. Artist Madelon Vriesendorp has conducted workshops at Solar do Unhão and combined objects made there with others of her own and artefacts by Brazilian craftspeople. Tapio Snellman’s film installation explores the life generated by SESC Pompéia within São Paulo and draws parallels with the city of Salvador. Combined, these two works do not merely recreate Lina’s methods or represent her work, but instead allow a more direct experience through a form of re-enactment.

Assemble designed and built a flexible enclosure, a set of display furniture and a technical system. The exhibition furniture designed by Assemble can adapt to a range of gallery situations and presents the diverse content within one space, without hierarchy. Directed by Larry Lapin, The Miami Jazz Cooperative (MJC) Voices is a jazz vocal ensemble made up of 13 talented amateurs, professional musicians, music educators and college students. MJC Membership in the group is by invitation and/or audition. Its mission is to sustain and promote the art form by presenting high quality jazz to audiences in South Florida and elsewhere.

MJC Voices teams up with jazz/pop/R&B vocalist Arianna Neikrug. Neikrug is the winner of the 2015 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition (the “Sassy” Awards) and has shared the stage with various artists including Steve Miller, Alice Cooper, Kenny Burrell, Neil Young, Al Jarreau, Mindy Abair, James Moody, George Benson, Karrin Allyson, Gretchen Par-lato, and Roseanna Vitro.

This season the group has performed for MJC’s Monday night “Rent Party” at the Open Stage Club in Coral Gables, for the “Jazz In The Gables” series at the Coral Gables Museum, for the “Inside Outside” jazz series at Christ The King Lutheran Church and at the Seminole Theatre in Homestead, Florida. MJC Voices has just sent an application to perform at the 2017 Jazz Education Network International Conference in New Orleans this coming January. Dara Friedman was born in Bad Kreuznach, Germany and currently lives and works between Miami and Bad Kreuznach, Germany.

She is an internationally acclaimed, Miami-based artist who is best known for experimental, non-narrative works that deconstruct the techniques of conventional filmmaking. Using the camera lens as an extension of her eye and body, Friedman strives for a heightened sense of subjectivity, distilling individual moments in time down to their emotional essence.

Artists in Action! is a 4-part presentation series at Girls’ Club, where prominent local artists offer a glimpse into their unique methods of artmaking. Chosen from the current exhibition Self-Proliferation, the 4 presenting artists work with diverse media, employing various printing and proliferation techniques to carry their message. Artists will share their inspirations, career paths and ah hah! moments with the public.

Tri-Rail’s “Senior Stars,” sponsored in part by Boomer Times, Symphony at the Waterways, John Knox Village and Baptist Eye Surgery Center, is always a magical, entertaining show featuring a competitive cast of talented South Florida singers.

Radio and TV personality Jade Alexander will serve as the special guest presenter of the competition showcasing solo singers, 65 years and older, who are residents of Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties. The twelve eager-to-win contestants will sing songs from the past and present as they vie for the coveted winning title, a $500 grand prize and a pass to ride Tri-Rail free for one year.

Now in its eleventh year, Tri-Rail’s “Senior Stars” continues to deliver an unmatched level of excitement for event goers of all ages. Fans will cheer for their favorite featured singers, some who are former stage and screen professionals who performed on Broadway, major television shows, touring acts and more. FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – South Florida JAZZ, the area’s premier modern jazz organization, is excited to present the Kurt Rosenwinkel Quartet on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at 8:00 PM. This is the first appearance in South Florida for this international star guitarist. The concert takes place at the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr Blvd, Davie 33314. One of the most influential jazz guitarists of his generation, Kurt Rosenwinkel, who recently returned full-time to the US from his academic position in Europe, brings a unique approach to composition and interplay typically with magnificent sidemen, as will be the case for this appearance, his first in South Florida.

Mr. Rosenwinkel was trained at Boston’s Berklee College of Music and immediately hired by Gary Burton, who has a penchant for discovering the most important guitarists for more than 40 years. He has devoted thousands of hours refining a techniques and conception that a huge number of young guitarists now regard as definitive. Kurt played in several cutting-edge bands in addition to becoming a successful leader.

Added to his prowess as a player, he is a gifted composer and arranger and has surrounded himself with like-minded collaborators, especially pianist Aaron Parks.

On the heels of its very successful spring exhibition series, the Gallery @ CGAF will open the summer season with a unique solo exhibition by Miami artist Aimee Perez on Saturday, May 7. On view until June 24, Mapping the Heart will feature nearly 30 works by Perez, including her highly regarded “Figurehead and Origin” clay sculpture series that explore contemporary, religious and biblical themes through the gestures of human emotions. In addition, the exhibition will also serve as a backdrop for a presentation of awards to local arts students that same evening.

Mapping the Heart by Aimee Perez, will run now through June 24. The exhibition opening reception will be held on Saturday, May 7 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and is open to the public. Refreshments will be served. The Gallery @ CGAF is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment.

Marina, orphaned daughter of a merchant captain, awaits the return of Jorge, the man who took her in after her father’s death. She is in love with him, but as he is older and her guardian, she has never dared tell him the truth
Another ship’s captain Alberto, Teresa’s father and a friend of Marina’s, tells the girls he is sailing away that evening. Marina asks him to give her a letter he had kept from her father, which she would like to have as a memento. Alberto gladly agrees, but their fond farewells are misinterpreted by Marina’s jealous suitor, the ships’ fitter Pascual, who considers himself virtually engaged to her Pascual tells her roughly that his clumsy ways stop him expressing his love for her. In exasperation she tells Pascual to ask her guardian for her hand – if Jorge agrees, then she will marry him. As Jorge returns, Pascual loses no time in telling Jorge that he intends to get married, and the older man heartily tells him that he has had the same thought, so why don’t they marry on the same day. Pascual names Marina, to Jorge’s shock and consternation. Marina is equally hurt that Jorge apparently wants to marry someone else.
Pascual intercepts a sailor bringing the letter from Alberto to Marina, and seeing it is a declaration of eternal love, he leaps to the obvious conclusion, denounces Marina bluntly, breaks off the engagement and rushes away cursing into the night.
As he leaves Jorge appears, and soon understands Pascual’s mistake and the innocent identity of the letter writer. When he hints he will be leaving tomorrow, Marina can no longer avoid telling him the identity of the man she really loves, and in a brief duet they admit their love for one another.

Miami, FL.- Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida’s wraps-up its stunning 2015-2016 season with a magnificent Spring Gala Ballet with a neoclassical program of demanding and original works by its Artistic Director, Vladimir Issaev.

This program will leave you heady with the beauty of the dancing and the music. Audiences will enjoy the artistry and virtuosity of Mary Carmen Catoya, Daniel Sarabia, Lillian Hill and Hernan Montenegro with the entire troupe performing Glinka’s “Suite Fantastique”; Verdi’s “Four Seasons”, along with original works such as “A Celebration of Klimt” including the wondrous music of Handel and “Taiko”, with its accompanying Japanese drumming. Plus, the program will include the beautiful piece “Endless” set to Mahler’s Adagio.

The Spring Gala will be an occasion to honor Dr. Jules Oaklander, a philanthropist and extraordinary supporter of the arts in South Florida to whom Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida is dedicating this season finale.

Just before the Gala, Mary Carmen Catoya and Hernan Montenegro will be performing at the International Stars Gala in Lotz, Poland for the 25th Anniversary of the “Ballet Foundation of the City of Lotz” on April 23 of 2016.

Artistic Director Vladimir Issaev will also attend as member of the jury of the International Ballet Competition that precedes the Gala. The troupe has been getting the best reviews from the specialized press since Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida opened the season with “Ballets with Latin Flavor” this past October obtained the Miami Life Award for “Best Ballet Performance of the year”, followed by nine sold out performances of The Nutcracker and most recently by the unforgettable performances of Coppelia.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, or MOCA, presents singer Maria Rivas as part of the monthly Jazz at MOCA series. She’s known as one of the most versatile voices in Latin America and now North America. Rivas skillfully combines Latin Jazz rhythms with music from around the world. She performs a blend of traditional standards as well as her own compositions in English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese.

On February 14th after an extended 5-week run, Miami New Drama closed their first production: THE GOLEM OF HAVANA.The show was seen by over 6500 people turning it into the highest grossing show in the history of the Colony Theater! Global sea levels have risen about eight inches in the twentieth century. The rate of annual rise has doubled in the past few decades and estimates are that sea levels could rise one to six feet by the end of the century. Efforts are underway to strengthen the resilience of coastal communities and prepare them for the adverse impacts of short- and long-term flooding. Not as much attention, however, has been given to protecting heritage resources or preparing for their loss.This presentation examines the threat of sea level rise to historic cities and cultural resources and explores strategies for adaptation or mitigation.

Join Ball & Chain for the fourth monthly installment of the “Jazz: Live at The Ball & Chain” in partnership with Miami’s most popular jazz station WNDA (88.9FM) who will feature alive radio broadcast on Thursday, April 28th, 2016.

This performance will feature the New York City jazz prodigy Kyle Poole on the drums along with Nick Tannura on guitar, Derek Fairholm on the piano and Eric England on bass. Live broadcasts will occur every last Thursday of the month and air on 88.9FM from 7PM to 8PM as well as live check-ins on air throughout the remainder of the performance ending at 10PM.

Kyle Poole was selected as a semi-finalist for the 2012 Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Competition and considered one of the top 12 young jazz drummers in the world.

Opening April 13 at the ArtCenter/South Florida, New York-based artists João Enxuto and Erica Love’s institutionally-focused work forms the basis of their new show “Beacons.” The exhibition builds upon their continued interest in the role technology plays in mediating the power dynamics between institutions and their publics.

Running through June 19, 2016 at the ArtCenter’s Project 924 gallery, the exhibition features a 15- minute video Institute for Southern Contemporary Art (ISCA): a proposal for an institution that utilizes an algorithm to analyze the contemporary art market in order to automate a production plan to create the means for artists to work otherwise. This strategy outlines the way in which artists can successfully make inroads into the global art market. The video—with scenes shot in Atlanta and in Miami Beach—sets up the framework for the exhibition where viewers can expect to engage with the gallery as a system of objects, artworks, and sensors––relaying both the signal and noise of data monitoring.

At noon on Sunday, April 17, 2016, Heart Harbor Rescue, a safe haven facility that aims to house, rehabilitate, and adopt out abandoned and abused animals, is hosting the main event of their March Madness Fun Run for Vets and Pets at America’s Backyard in Fort Lauderdale. Established as an anti-cruelty, anti-bullying not-for-profit, Heart Harbor Rescue partners with other rescue groups to provide seminars that allow children and adults the opportunity to interact with rescue animals in a way that fosters warmth and compassion.
Attendees will enjoy a day of live music, food vendors, craft artisans, silent auctions, and raffles. Tickets are $10 for entry; Poker Play is an additional $10 per hand, with prizes of upwards of $300 up for grabs. Beer and drink specials will be on offer. Seven bands are scheduled to perform including Big Whiskey & the Opium Kings, SOULICIDE, Spank the Band, Too Hot, Hired Gunz, CRuSH, and JADED, South Florida’s most popular Aerosmith tribute band.
The event will be marked by an all-day adoption special in which rescue animals from Animal Aid, Beyond Nine Cat Rescue, and Little Paws of Love will be available for adoption.
All proceeds benefit Paws for Veterans, Animal Aid Inc, and Beyond Nine Cat Rescue, as well as Heart Harbor Rescue’s mission to purchase a new facility, train a rescue dog for a PTSD Veteran, and aid in the cost of rescuing and rehabilitating animals.

Wood art has a long history that can be traced to ancient cultures through mythology and folklore. It would appear that man has always had an ambiguous relationship with trees and wood. Worshipped for perceived magical powers, and revered for its strength and beauty this age old element is perhaps one of the oldest mediums used for artistic expression.

Today contemporary artists continue to work with wood but with a different using materials that are local and reclaimed artists explore the unique characteristics of wood pushing the boundaries to incorporate the authentic nature of wood in a new visual language that is fresh, bold and confident.

The exhibit, Knock on Wood includes panel paintings, intriguing sculptures with subliminal forms, and exhilarating installations juxtaposed to underscore the strength, beauty and sensual nature of wood.

Traditionally, a fifth anniversary is celebrated with a gift made of wood. The exhibit, Knock on Wood is an exceptional gift and officially forms part of an ongoing celebration for the Bird Road Art Walk’s fifth anniversary. Fifth anniversaries are celebrated with wood, as, by the fifth year, the relationship gains increased solidity and continues to grow strong. The Bird Road Art Walk is celebrating its Fifth Anniversary with wood during October 2015-2016.

In order to dispel preconceived notions about the expressive power of wood, Miguel Rodez Art Projects initiated an exhibit showcasing the work of very talented contemporary artists. The house was packed with art-enthusiasts of all kinds.

The next iteration of the show will include spectacular new works. It will take place in conjunction with other wood-based shows opening at the Bird Road Art Walk, on April 16th from 7:00 to 10:00 pm.

Lecture Series Created to honor Dr. Bernard and Jeanette Gordon Halperin
Temple Israel to host Professor Joseph Epstein

April 2016/Miami, FL/– Temple Israel of Greater Miami will welcome Professor Joseph Epstein who will kick off the inaugural lecture for the Dr. Bernard and Jeanette Gordon Halperin Memorial Lecture Series on Sunday, April 17, 2016 at 4pm. The topic of the inaugural lecture is Jewish humor. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Professor Epstein is an essayist, short story writer, and editor. The author of more than 20 books, he was a lecturer at Northwestern University from 1974 to 2002 and is an Emeritus Lecturer of English there.

He is a contributing editor at The Weekly Standard and a long-time contributor of essays and short stories to The New Criterion and Commentary. In 2003, he was awarded a National Humanities Medal by the National Endowment for the Humanities. He originated the Enter Laughing feature which examines Jewish humor. William F. Buckley once wrote that he is “the wittiest” essayist alive.

This lecture is being underwritten by the Halperin families who created this lecture series to honor and remember their parents; Dr. Bernard Halperin and Jeanette Gordon Halperin.

“I have vivid memories of their passionate discussions about, among other things, Jewish culture, politics, movies, and books. Quite often, the most compelling lessons my parents taught me were sugar-coated with laughter,” said son Keith Halperin. “My siblings and I wanted to remember their love of laughter, and with Joe Epstein’s wit and wisdom, we could think of no better guest speaker to kick of this lecture series.”

Additional lectures will be planned in the future.
