The Elephant in the Room is an idiom for an obvious truth that is either being ignored, or otherwise unaddressed. The purpose of this exhibit is to provide a safe place for issues and topics that are normally hidden from public view. Through visual and performance art, the artists participating in this event will share secrets and taboos, discussing openly to find solutions for individual and collective emancipation. Attendees are invited to enter the ‘Confessional’, an interactive safe space installation to share their ‘elephant’.

What’s Your Elephant will be hosted by 1310 Gallery residents Niki Lopez, visual artist, & designer, and Alana DaCosta, multidisciplinary artist.

Featured artists include: Niki Lopez, Alana DaCosta, AJ Grossman, Ana Rossi, Cheryl Brown, Macarena Zilveti, Mila Hajjar, Cesca Veo, Alex Tuzinsky, Chire Regans, Tabatha Mudra, Jose Silva, Yudelka Tavera, Zeal Harris, Artists for Black Lives Matter collective and SunServe Youth

Opening night performance featuring: Alana DaCosta, Profound Breath, We’re Weird, and Nephii Love, Bishop and Venus Rising Drum and Dance Troupe

Lopez and DaCosta will also host an interactive workshop called “What’s Your Elephant”, where participants can use creative arts in a safe space to reveal individual or societal “elephants”. “The obvious is oftentimes ignored and swept under the rug. Some people may chose to never face it,” says DaCosta, who also has a MS in Mental Health Counseling. “Yet, we all have creative energy and have the power of choice to free ourselves of whatever makes us uncomfortable. Through creative expression, many can learn to address the issue and share with others who most likely have their own elephant”.
“It’s about acknowledging it (the elephant), owning it, so that it doesn’t define you.” Says Lopez, an artist and activist with her own elephant that will be revealed at the exhibit.

As a part of this movement, Lopez & DaCosta ask that the public participate by submitting their unspoken truth AND use the hashtag #whatsyourelephant on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and Instagram.

Community Partner: SunServe- SunServe is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit social services agency serving the LGBTQ community in South Florida. Mission: Recognizing that the entire LGBTQ community has the right to quality care, our mission is to provide critical life assistance and professional mental health services with an emphasis on economically disadvantaged, marginalized youth and senior adults in the greater South Florida metropolitan area.

1310 Gallery is an artist-run collective that offers over 2400 square feet of exhibition space split into 3 levels, and housed within ArtSpace’s live/work facility, Sailboat Bend Artist Lofts. 1310 Gallery rotates art exhibitions monthly and also hosts performances and workshops. 2013 Broward New Times “Best Art Gallery of the Year”. Miami Music Festival, an intensive training program for the next generation of classical musicians to work with mentors and gain performing experience, announces the lineup for the 2017 season from June 6 through July 30, 2017. In their fourth season, MMF will present a series of Operas as part of the MMF’s Opera Institute.

For the first time in 28 years, the Miami Music Festival’s Wagner Institute brings to life Wagner’s Die Walküre, the composer’s grand musical drama from the Ring Cycle. The Grammy Award-winning soprano Christine Brewer joins bass-baritone Alan Held – hailed as “one of opera’s finest singing actors” with the Institute’s extraordinary young professional artists, the 100 musicians of the MMF Symphony Orchestra, and conductor Michael Rossi in a staged performance at the Adrienne Arsht Knight Concert Hall.

Guests are invited to don their best white attire for the annual Masterpiece event, a chic cocktail reception featuring mixed media artist Cory Bennett. The party, called “20” for the museum’s 20th anniversary, will feature live entertainment as well as heavy hors d’oeuvres, wine and beer and a signature cocktail.

“Iconic Neo-POP,” a new show created by mixed media artist Cory Bennett, will be featured in the main gallery. Bennett combines pop themes, iconic images and neo-expressionist techniques to produce work that is wary of modern society. Born and raised in Las Vegas, Bennett has his own unique style of art that combines an urban “street” style with the use of found-media, providing the artist with an endless supply of complex and relevant subject matter.

In addition to Bennett, the Florida Watercolor Society will be featured in the East and Kuhn galleries. This 46th exhibition will feature works from Iain Stewart and Bev Jozwiak and is also part of the Society’s annual convention, which will bring nearly 500 artists from around Florida to Coral Springs.

The annual Masterpiece event is sponsored in part by Publix Supermarket Charities, Total Wine & More, Masterpiece Publishing, Broward County Cultural Division, State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, Coral Springs Festival of the Arts, and the City of Coral Springs, with proceeds supporting the educational programming of the Coral Springs Museum of Art.

In his newest play, Carbonell Award-winning playwright Michael McKeever explores the history of the world’s most famous painting, including Leonardo da Vinci’s meeting of Senora del Giocondo (Mona Lisa) and his masterful creation of her indelible countenance. This historical, funny and intriguing new piece presents highlights throughout the painting’s infamous past, including her vandalism, her theft, her journey to America (at the request of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy) and the various places she spent her storied lifespan, including hanging in Napoleon’s bedroom, before her final resting place at the Louvre.

What: Fashion students from Miami International University of Art & Design (MIU) to kick off Swim Week with their Swim/Resort Collection during 2017 Swim Fashion Week. Over 40 future student designers will showcase their creativity and skill with Swim/Resort Wear collection.

Additionally, MIU fashion students have created one-of-a-kind signature crafted resort/swimwear from McDonald’s packaging and paper goods. From Happy Meal haute couture to French fry box cover ups and hamburger wrapper hoodies, this unique McDCouture collection for both men and women will be featured during the school’s annual Swim Fashion Show.

Students from MIU have been hungry for another McDonald’s unconventional fashion challenge since their 2015 McDCouture fashion show whet the appetites of fashionistas around the world. This year, McDonald’s invited students to submit design concepts for men’s and women’s swimwear and is offering a $5000 scholarship for the best signature crafted design. The 20 most innovative looks were selected to be presented as part of the school’s Swim 2017 Fashion Show on Thursday, July 20. The aspiring designers utilized more than 7,000 McDonald’s sandwich wrappers, 2,800 fry boxes, 2,800 straws, 825 soft drink cups, 225 Happy Meal boxes, 2900 sandwich boxes, 1000 Sriracha sauce lids and 300 McFlurry cups to create their McDCouture Swimwear for the runway.

Slow Food Miami continues its “Snail Social” summer series on Tuesday, July 11 from 6-8PM at The Brick, a newly-opened farm-to-table restaurant in Downtown Dadeland.

Corey Bousquet, owner of The Brick, really wanted to create a space that guests felt comfortable in and can call their own. The decor is rustic, with white string lighting and a massive reclaimed wood pergola. He designed the kitchen to be open and expose the open flames of their brick oven, allowing guests to truly be immersed in the full dining experience.

The menu includes a variety of savory dishes and chef’s selection for dessert. The Chef updates our menu often, to provide a range in your dining experience.

PLEASE NOTE:

There are two shows Friday and Saturday. Guests in first dinner seating have the table for only the first show. After the first show, the table will be turned over to new guests arriving for the last show. We welcome first show dinner guests to continue the night at the Bar and in standing room. Guests in the second dinner seating may keep their table for the duration of the evening.

LATE NIGHT

We have two live music and entertainment shows Friday – Saturday. First dinner seating is at 8:00 pm and our second seating is at 11:00 pm. Doors open at 7:30 pm for cocktails and general admission. Dinner reservation guests should arrive promptly and with all guests in attendance prior to being seated. We have a 15 minute maximum hold time for all table reservations. A Credit Card is held for all reservations. 24hr cancellation policy. $50 per person charge for no-shows.

DINNER & RESERVATIONS

Our sharable prix-fixe menu is $85 per person. Dinner reservations include all items listed in the menu paired with our spectacular Tucán show followed by a live band. Beverages are separate.

The menu includes a variety of savory dishes and chef’s selection for dessert. The Chef updates our menu often, to provide a range in your dining experience.

PLEASE NOTE:

There are two shows Friday and Saturday. Guests in first dinner seating have the table for only the first show. After the first show, the table will be turned over to new guests arriving for the last show. We welcome first show dinner guests to continue the night at the Bar and in standing room. Guests in the second dinner seating may keep their table for the duration of the evening.

LATE NIGHT

Our second half of programming for the evening begins at 1:30am. Enjoy pulsating tropical rhythms fused with a variety of electronic music by local to international DJs, coupled with live percussion.

DRESS CODE

We encourage all of our guests to fix up and look sharp by coming in cocktail attire or formal wear. Please note: Casual attire such as flip flops, t-shirts or beach wear will not be admitted. This is showbiz, kid!

The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) continues to celebrate the 16th anniversary of its acclaimed Miami Spice Restaurant Program with a special one-night-only dinner in partnership with David Grutman and Executive Chef Ben Goldman of Komodo. Saxophonist, composer, orchestrator, producer, scholar, professor, and leader Ed Calle is known for his extraordinary ability to sight-read, interpret, and perform virtually any musical style. Throughout the globe, his peers and colleagues often laud his versatility. Despite his prodigious experience, he remains relentlessly demanding about his work. On the tenor sax, Calle has an expressive, full-bodied sound, almost vocal in the middle and upper registers, cello-like at the bottom. As a soloist, he can be deceptively brilliant. He has an impressive, fluid technique and uses it to explore the material at hand with logic and purpose.

The Venezuelan-born, South Florida-based Calle is a Latin Grammy award winner and a five-time Latin Grammy nominee. This two-hour walking tour highlights several of downtown Miami’s best historic buildings, most of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. Tour begins with a brief introductory presentation at MCAD, itself located in the 1912 Old Post Office Building at the center of the City of Miami’s Historic District and covers a three-block area in the core of the Central Business District. Whether you are an architect or just love architecture, this tour is for you!

Tour departs from MCAD rain or shine. All tickets are $20 or $15 for seniors and students. Each adult ticket admits one child under the age of 8 for free. Advance reservations online are required. Few films inspire the imagination as much as Steven Spielberg’s landmark adventure film Jurassic Park. In May 1940, Germany advanced into France, trapping Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk. Under air and ground cover from British and French forces, troops were slowly and methodically evacuated from the beach using every serviceable naval and civilian vessel that could be found. At the end of this heroic mission, 330,000 French, British, Belgian and Dutch soldiers were safely evacuated. Christopher Nolan’s film of the Battle of Dunkirk is, hands down, the most eagerly anticipated film of the summer.

For the sixth year in a row — every Wednesday in July — Executive Chef Adonay Tafur and Chef Joshua Gripper will host a backyard throw down at The Dutch in the W South Beach Hotel & Residences. Chefs will craft a mouth-watering BBQ feast served up family-style, along with homemade pies and treats by Pastry Chefs Jaclyn Marshal and Richard Vaughn.

The weekly event will take place from 6:30PM to 10PM in The Dutch’s very own backyard, the Grove. Kicking-off July 5th, guests can enjoy a delicious array of themed BBQ’s for only $40 per person, including tax and gratuity; excluding beverages.

Winner of the 2006 International Trumpet Guild Jazz Competition, and the 2004 National Trumpet Jazz Competition, Jean Caze has emerged as one of today’s most exciting voices in jazz. Jean has performed with jazz icons such as Herbie Hancock, Najee, Arturo Sandoval , Roberta Flack, Al Jarreau, and George Duke to name a few. While still in high school, Jean performed with the legendary rock group “Chicago” live on NBC. In 2007, the Haitian-born trumpeter won second place in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.

Jean has received abundant praise from critics, peers and jazz enthusiasts alike who have taken to Jean’s lyrical tone and tasteful ideas. Batuke Samba Funk has quickly become one of South Florida’s favorite party bands in the last few years. The group mixes rhythms from Brazilian samba and with classic 70s American funk. The goal of Batuke is to “brazilianize” American sounds, and “Americanize” Brazilian sounds in a perfectly balanced fusion. The band is formed by several of Miami’s top Brazilian musicians including bassist and composer Diogo Brown, guitarist Cezar Santana and singer Mari Mac. They have performed with top Brazilian artists like Vanessa da Mata, and also James Brown’s legendary sax player Pee Wee Ellis. Come explore Miami’s historic downtown like an architect! See our city’s landmark buildings through an architect’s eyes, using a sketchbook and pen. Learn to draw by sketching some of downtown Miami’s historic landmarks, like the Dade County Courthouse, the Church of Gesù and the old US Post Office Building, home of MCAD! This 2-hour course is open to beginners and novices of all ages who love architecture and want to explore it through drawing.

It is the story of environmental journalist, Mara Lowe, receiving the tip of her life. Toxic waste is eroding Florida’s limestone bedrock. Friday, July 7 at 8 PM: The three-time Grammy-nominated Cuban music group Tiempo Libre comes to Arts Garage. They are one the hottest young Latin bands today. In its 16th year, the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB)’s Miami Spice Restaurant Program returns with its popular Miami Spice Mash-Up series. The popular dinners will once again unite some of the city’s most beloved chefs for a night filled with indulgent dishes previewing their upcoming Miami Spice menus.

The first installment will take place on Thursday, June 22, 2017. Three of the city’s hottest waterfront dining destinations will team up for one-night-only – Chefs Raul A. Del Pozo of Lightkeepers at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami and Nicolas Mazier of TATEL at The Ritz-Carlton South Beach, will join forces with Paula DaSilva at her newly opened waterfront oasis, Artisan Beach House located at The Ritz-Carlton, Bal Harbour.

Together, they will craft a savory three-course, family-style meal featuring selections from each restaurant’s upcoming Miami Spice menus exclusively available August through September. Priced at $75 per person (excluding tax, tip and additional beverage purchases) the preview dinner will include complimentary pours from Miami Spice sponsors Chandon California, Stella Artois, Terrazas de los Andes and FIJI Water.
