This October #MiamiCarnivalTurns30. To celebrate this milestone, the Miami Broward Carnival Committee Inc. has partnered with Pèrez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) to host a Carnival inspired kick-off event at the musuem(1103 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, FL 33130) to open the 2014 Miami Broward Carnival season. The event will feature a steel band performance, masquerade costume design workshop, and more on Thursday, October 2nd from 6:00pm-9:00pm. Models in traditional Caribbean style masquerade attire will greet guests as they enjoy the mesmerizing steel band music playing in the background. Guests will also be able to view Beatriz Milhazes: Jardim Botânico exhibit, the first major U.S. retrospective on Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes, whose large-scale abstract paintings were inspired by the decorations of Carnival. One of #Miami Broward Carnival’s own masquerade bands will be leading the workshop on the history and design of traditional masquerade costumes.

South Florida’s diverse cultural makeup has allowed it to be a stage for showcasing and celebrating the unique traditions of its residents. The Miami Broward Carnival is one of the area’s largest annual events, drawing upwards of 30,000 participants and spectators each year.

“Serving Miami’s Caribbean community is part of PAMM’s core mission”, said PAMM Director Thom Collins. “We’re thrilled to be a part of the Miami Broward Carnival festivities this year and hope that our partnership will encourage even more members of Miami’s Caribbean community to visit the museum.” Works by Caribbean artists are on view throughout the museum as part of the permanent collection installations, and a solo show by Haitian-born, Miami-based Adler Guerrier is also currently on view. Prior to Beatriz Milhazes:  Jardim Botânico opening, the museum presented a major group show of works by Caribbean artists and hosted a kick-off for Caribbean American Heritage Month, a Caribbean video and film series, and a symposium relating to Caribbean art.
 
Miami Broward Carnival Chair Joan Hinkson addressed the new event saying, “Partnering with PAMM is the perfect way to celebrate 30 years of Miami Carnival as Miami Broward Carnival continues growing and sharing the exciting traditions of Caribbean culture with a larger, more diverse audience.”

A personal vision of The Hilton Brothers,’ a collaboration between photographers Christopher Makos + Paul Solberg as seen in their celebrity portraits of Andy Warhol, along with Ai Weiwei, Tom Ford, Debbie Harry, Lou Reed, Georgia O’Keefe & others. The exhibit also features select intimate photographs of Warhol from William John Kennedy: The Warhol Museum Edition.

The first floor of the gallery will showcase ‘All About Warhol’, the mezzanine will include works by renowned artists represented by Snap! including Richard Tuschman, Tom Chambers, Wendy Sacks, Patricia Van de Camp, Heather Evans Smith, Thomas Dodd, Jason Mitchell and Luis Lazo/L’atelier Alejandro Lazo.

Pérez Art Museum Miami will host a public conversation with world-renowned Brazilian abstract artist Beatriz Milhazes and Chief Curator Tobias Ostrander as part of the debut of the artist’s first major U.S. survey of works.

Beatriz Milhazes: Jardim Botânico will feature works never before seen in the United States, as well as two new paintings made specifically for PAMM’s presentation. Milhazes’ paintings, with their exuberant colors and decorative elements, parallel Miami’s tropical environment, art deco architecture and vibrant atmosphere—bringing the experience of the city to PAMM’s galleries.

Celebrate the opening of Beatriz Milhazes: Jardim Botânico with live music by Alma Tropicalia and a waterfront bar on the terrace. Between sets enjoy Brazilian grooves from DJ Marcello Bentine.
The celebration features the Miami debut of Brazilian band Alma Tropicalia. The DC-based band reimagines the psych-samba sounds of 60’s tropicália music from Brazil, a mind-bending mix of tropical rhythms, soulful funk grooves and day-glo psychedelia that has quickly earned the group ecstatic reviews and packed performances across the region. The band’s daring lineup combines the masterful Brazilian jazz vocalist Elin (featured on Thievery Corporation’s Brazil-inspired album “Saudade”) with the unhinged experimentation of some of the top backing musicians in today’s rock and world music scene (featuring members of Cyro Baptista’s Beat the Donkey, Bio Ritmo, and more).
