We’re bringing the island of Curaçao to Miami for an epic evening of exploration, culture, and celebration.

On May 13, The New Tropic is transforming the Wynwood Yard into a little slice of the Caribbean getaway with authentic music, cocktails, and interactive experiences, in partnership with the Curaçao Tourist Board. Best of all, we’ll be sending a bunch of you to experience Curaçao for yourselves, on the house, through multiple giveaways.

We’ll be updating you with all deets leading up to the event, but for now, here are some things you can expect:

– Complimentary Curaçao Liqueur-inspired cocktails by local mixologists

– Live Afro-Caribbean-influenced DJ set by DJ Le Spam of Spam All-Stars

– Livestream with locals who’ll be at a simultaneous get-down in Curaçao

Just off the coast of Venezuela, Curaçao is only a three-hour flight from Miami, and the exploration list is insanely long: a unique history and culture, its own language (Papiamentu!), 36 beautiful beaches, hidden herb gardens, a national liquor, iguana soup—and, most importantly, awesome people. Join us to get a taste.

The event is free and open to the community with RSVP.

Disruptive Technology Series

BACCF DISRUPTIVE TECHNOLOGY SERIES

Technology is moving so quickly, and in so many directions, that it becomes challenging to pay attention – we are constantly on the lookout for the “next big thing.” While not all innovations are disruptive, still driving economic growth, disruptive technologies challenge and transform not only business models and the global economy, but life itself.

Simply think of how smartphones largely replaced cell phones and PDAs and, because of the available apps, also disrupted: pocket cameras, MP3 players, calculators and GPS devices, among many others. For some mobile users, smartphones often replace laptops.

True market disruption happens when there is a confluence of multiple events, including seemingly unrelated technology advancements in adjacent industries, by emerging complementary aspects and market readiness for change. For example, artificial intelligence offers the opportunity to change the health of populations, from how individuals track symptoms and life expectancy, to the very nature of diagnostic, surgical, and hospital care, and the economics of health insurance.

Thus, any player, from any industry, can come in unexpectedly with a new business model, fueled by innovative technologies and ideas, and render everyone else obsolete. Therefore, companies need to operate in a state of hyper revolution with the inherent capacity and competency to evolve quickly. For companies and entrepreneurs, that means institutionalizing innovation. Empowering and appreciating employees for increased effectiveness. Having strategies to satisfy clients’ functional and emotional needs. Looking at all market players, even competitors, as potential partners in various levels of alliance. Looking at technology as an increasing enabler of effective change. Constantly looking at new ways of thinking and acting.

Experts suggest that disruptive technology trends to watch for in 2017 include artificial intelligence, automation of everything (cars, finance, etc.), internet of everything, virtual reality, 3D printing, biometrics and digital ID, big data, healthcare, mobile workforce, and space exploration.

The Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce of Florida (BACCF) will be at the forefront of disruptive technologies, by bringing experts to keep its members and the overall business community abreast of trends and innovative business practices.

Jungle Island
1111 Jungle Island Trail,
Miami, Florida 33132

Cost: $75 per person or $750 per table

PhilanthropyMiami© (PhilanthropyMiami.org) and The Miami Foundation announced today that Alberto Ibargüen, president and CEO of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, is the recipient of the 2017 Community Champion Award, and Rebecca Fishman Lipsey is the winner of the Ruth Shack Leadership Award.

Ibargüen and Lipsey will be honored at the 20th Donor Next Door Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 11, at Jungle Island, 1111 Parrot Jungle Trail, in Miami. The luncheon also celebrates the philanthropy of more than 30 individuals, families, foundations and corporations that donate time and money to support the work of nonprofits in South Florida.

As president and CEO of Knight Foundation, Ibargüen oversees a national foundation with $2.3 billion in assets and $140 million in annual grants. Knight invests in programs in journalism, technology, and the arts and in the success of 26 U.S. cities. Ibargüen’s leadership and vision have spurred entrepreneurship and social change in Miami-Dade County, shaking up the status quo to make way for startups, groundbreaking technology programs and community organizations energized with new ideas and solutions.

“As the president of Knight Foundation, Alberto adopted a different approach to philanthropy, investing in nonprofit programs and even businesses that sparked economic growth the region sorely needed,” said Hank Raattama, co-chair of PhilanthropyMiami and a partner at Akerman LLP. “Knight Foundation’s investment strategy turned Miami and even South Florida into one of the hottest places for startups in the country. Alberto’s vision has changed our community and the local economy for decades to come.”

The Community Champion Award was established in 2013 by PhilanthropyMiami, formerly LEAVE A LEGACY© of Miami-Dade, and celebrates an individual or organization that contributes to the well-being of the community through work and philanthropy. Ibargüen joins an impressive list of Community Champion Award honorees:

2016 – Deborah Hoffman, philanthropist and volunteer
2015 – Baptist Health South Florida
2014 – David Lawrence Jr., chair of The Children’s Movement of Florida
2013 – Dr. Eduardo Padrón, president of Miami Dade College

As the 2017 recipient of the Ruth Shack Leadership Award, Lipsey embodies the qualities for which Ruth Shack, president emeritus of The Miami Foundation, is known: leadership, ethics, dedication and service to Greater Miami.

Lipsey’s peers and admirers say Lipsey has been a catalyst, inspiring a new generation of leaders to step up and speak up. Lipsey launched Radical Partners, a social innovation accelerator that supports organizations addressing community needs, and fuels collaboration, growth and partnerships that lead to real change. Inspired by the many organizations and individuals she trains, Lipsey marshalled the community around transportation issues, creating Public Transit Day in Miami-Dade County to highlight the importance of public transportation.

“Much like Ruth Shack did around civil rights, Rebecca has sparked action for education, social entrepreneurship, transit solutions and other issues shaping Greater Miami’s future. In this our 50th anniversary year, we’re encouraging all Miamians to champion what matters to them, like Rebecca has done,” said Javier Alberto Soto, president and CEO of The Miami Foundation.

Lipsey joins a noted list of Ruth Shack Leadership Award winners:
2016 – Vance Aloupis – The Children’s Movement of Florida
2015 – Felecia Hatcher – Code Fever and Black Tech Week
2014 – Saif Ishoof – Florida International University
2013 – Amy Rosenberg – National YoungArts Foundation, Overtown Music Project founder
2012 – Daniel Diaz Leyva – Diaz Leyva & Gil, LLC
2011 – Jaret L. Davis – Greenberg Traurig, P.A
2010 – Marlon Hill – Hamilton, Miller & Birthisel

Seasons Farm Fresh offers a simple way to bring fresh produce from the farm-to-table. With distribution facilities located in Miami, in the crossroads of Latin America and the Caribbean, Seasons Farm Fresh has unparalleled access to importing products from across the region. Seasons Farm Fresh works exclusively with small, family-run farms to ensure produce is grown sustainably and harvested fresh for each order. Drawing from an unbroken tradition of Indian devotional singing, Jai Uttal will introduce and lead us in the ancient practice of “Kirtan” (or chanting), the heart of devotional yoga. This practice of calling to the divine creates a bridge between the individual and the eternal, opening the heart and welcoming the spirit. Sometimes soft and meditative and sometimes loud and wildly rhythmic, Kirtan takes the participant on a deep emotional and musical journey through our mostly unexplored inner world. With solo performance and call-and-response group chanting, jai creates a space of invocation, prayer, and heartfelt expression. Jai has been leading Kirtans worldwide for over thirty years. “these ancient chants,” writes Jai “contain a transformative power and healing energy. By singing these prayers we join a stream of consciousness and devotion that has been flowing for centuries.” no previous experience is needed. This is an exploration of the heart, independent of vocal or musical technique. General admission: $45 in advance; $55 at the door premium: $55 in advance; $65 at the door; valet parking and self-parking is available.

Cost: Free

It’s time to bring a little culture to Downtown Miami! CULTRA is a roving Open Mic held in a Downtown Miami park every third-Thursday from January to May. Produced in collaboration with Emerge Miami, CULTRA is an opportunity for local performers in all disciplines to showcase their skills for fellow Miamians in some of the most scenic public spaces this town has to offer. The CULTRA spaceship lands in newly christened Omni Park Miami for the April edition.

Our ringleaders this month are the quirky kids of Front Yard Theatre Collective who have been improv-ing their way to greatness for seven years. We’ll start with the usual 90 minutes of open mic time from 7:30 – 9pm followed by a feature performance from our rambunctuous hosts!

Interested in performing? Pre-register with our online form: http://buskerfestmiami.com/cultra-performer-application/

Day-of signup will close at 7pm. Musicians should plan to play in stripped-down fashion – we have a lot of performers to get through.

Interested in vending? Send us an email at info@buskerfestmiami.com.

CULTRA is made possible by a Public Space Challenge grant awarded by the Miami Foundation.

It seeks to investigate new exhibition models and formats by building a show as a choir, merging polyphonic voices to offer a window into contemporaneity. This marks the 15th edition of the Biennale of Moving Images and the first time that it will be presented in the United States. Comprising a wide array of multimedia installations, films and documentaries as well as performances, the biennale is situated somewhere between a cinema festival, a constellation of solo video installations, one-night only performances and a site for research and experimentation. All works presented in the biennale are new, having been commissioned specifically for the event in 2016 in response to the current sociopolitical climate and as such are representative of the most innovative works in contemporary video and film production today.

Participating artists include:
Yuri Ancarani, John M. Armleder & Stephan Eicher, Karimah Ashadu, Bertille Bak, Pauline Boudry & Renate Lorenz, Brian Bress, Loulou Cherinet, Massimo d’Anolfi & Martina Parenti, Alessio Di Zio, Bodil Furu, Jenna Hasse, Emilie Jouvet, Evangelia Kranioti, Salomé Lamas, Boris Mitić, Kerry Tribe, Wu Tsang, and Emily Wardill.

Grammy-nominated jazz drummer Ignacio Berroa has been recognized as one of the greatest drummers of all time. He was included in the 2011 compilation entitled “Jazz Drumming Legends” which features some of the most renowned drummers in Jazz history. Ignacio also received a Lifetime Achievement Award during from The Montreal Jazz Festival in the same year.

Both a veteran and a pioneer, the Cuban-born drummer has been applauded through the years for his facility in combining folkloric rhythms with contemporary jazz and funk – resulting in a fiery blend that swings and grooves, with a touch of old country roots.

In the early 80s, Ignacio joined jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie’s quartet, quickly becoming an in-demand drummer in the contemporary jazz world. Ignacio has also worked with other star artists like Tito Puente, Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard, Gilberto Gil, the Lincoln Center Orchestra, and more.

Gillespie best described Ignacio as: “the only Latin drummer in the world in the history of American music that intimately knows both worlds: his native Afro-Cuban music as well as Jazz…”.

The Ignacio Berroa Quartet positively sizzles and grooves, full of flair and flash. Ignacio possesses the uncanny ability to dazzle with his fills and lift a crowd to its feet. His electric energy, combined with his incomparable skill, gets people excited about playing drums in the first place.

Berroa will be joined by Martin Bejerano on piano, Lowell Ringel on bass and Mark Small on sax. Come experience the jazz-legend and his Quartet in action!

“Ignacio plays with intelligence, taste, fire, and soul. His playing combines the finest aspects of Afro-Cuban and American styles of drumming.” -Wynton Marsalis

Colombia’s “Herencia de Timbiqui” brings their Irresistable AfroColombian Rhythms 4/22/17

Colombia’s “Herencia de Timbiqui” brings their Irresistable AfroColombian Rhythms
Saturday, 04/22/2017 – 08:00 pm –
Koubek Center
2705 SW 3 Street,
Miami, Florida 33135
Website
Cost: $10 – $20

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Koubek Center, su casa de cultura, hosts the Little Havana Social Club social dance series season finale with Herencia de Timbiqui – direct from Colombia, at 8 p.m., Saturday, April 22.

Hailed as “one of the most exciting tropical music acts out of Colombia in recent years” by World Music Central, and “Pound for pound, the best band of the Colombian Pacific” by Carlos Vives, Herencia de Timbiqui is an Afro-descendent group from the Pacific coast of Colombia, that combines ancestral and modern instruments for an irresistible sound that is folkloric and contemporary.

“Our musical richness is the fruit of many afternoons spent on the banks of the Timbiquí, River, in the middle of the Colombian Pacific jungle, when the marimba made from the chonta tree and traditional drums overtake the silence. That is our heritage”!

Timbiquí is a small town on the Colombian Pacific Ocean coast, surrounded by jungle and rivers. In the early aughts, composer Begner Vásquez and four other friends were forced to abandon their hometown due to the violence generated by illegal groups that controlled the area’s gold mines as well as the serious danger posed by paramilitary groups to Afro Colombian communities. They moved to Cali, the largest city on the Colombian Pacific coast, founded the band, and began to develop their unique take on their folkloric-rooted grooves, which are played with marimba made from the chonta tree, deer-hide drums called cununus and seed-filled percussion instruments called guasá–fused with contemporary instruments such as the electrical guitar, drums, trumpet and sax. An eleven member band, Herencia also added to the mix the salsa of Colombian dance halls as well as an exploration of funk, jazz and reggae. It is said that each concert is an explosion of energy, flavor and rhyhms that force audience members up from the seats.

Luckily, the Little Havana Social Club series–dedicated to celebrating Latin American heritage through music and dance–provides a dance floor for such an occasion. Intent on promoting community and engagement, the evening featuries a pre-concert dance lesson, DJ set, and local vendors selling specialty food and cocktails. Situated in the lush gardens of the historic Koubek Center mansion, the audience has plenty of opportunity to mix and mingle, learn and engage.

About Herencia de Timbiqui
The folkloric ensemble honors traditional regional music styles and maintain a strong commitment to social issues, offering workshops and outreach to benefit underserved populations in Colombia. Their compositions harken back to ancestral roots – instruments, vocals, call and response, and rhythm – all the while being completely contemporary.

In 2006, Herencia de Timbiquí won first place in the Free Form Category in the renowned “Petronio Álvarez Pacific Music Festival”, the largest gathering of the music of the Afro-Colombian Pacific Coast. In 2010, their first international performance brought them to the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, and that same year, they were featured in the Colombia episode of PBS’s “Music Voyager”. In 2011, they performed two official showcases at SXSW to rave reviews. They’ve been awarded the ‘Gaviota de Plata’ award for Best Folkloric Song at the International Festival Viña del Mar in Chile, and the Colombian Shock Prize for Best Recording of the Year for their single “Amanece”. The band has performed in the closing ceremony of the World Games in Cali along with Colombian superstar Carlos Vives, and were selected to participate in the projects created by Vives as USAID’s first “Inclusion Ambassador.”

Their most recent album, “This is Gozar!”, bears the mark of renowned British producer William Holland (aka “Quantic”) and features two tunes deeply steeped in the band’s African roots: “Negrito”, which is a currulao (ancestral song and dance) and “A tu manera”, a fusion of reggae with aguabajo (traditional chants based on two vocalists). The album also features “Afrika”, a song composed during Herencia’s tour throughout Zambia y Zimbabwe, featuring Ghanaian guitarist, bandleader and living legend Ebo Taylor.

Herencia de Timbiquí has toured extensively thoughout Central and South America, Eurpoe, Africa and the US, and have also completed a series of 30 concerts in Dubai. This show marks their South Florida debut.
