On May 17th, Faena Miami Beach welcomes celebrated chef David Oka for the next installment of Pao’s Chef Collective Series, a gastronomic event in which chefs from around the world join together to create an innovative menu of unpredictable flavors.
Joined by Pao’s Chef de Cuisine, Benjamin Murray, Chef Oka will take to the award-winning restaurant’s kitchen to present a prix fixe menu of Japanese-inspired dishes – a nod to the chefs’ shared Japanese heritage – infused with the flavors and ingredients of traditional Peruvian fare for a truly unique epicurean experience.
Born and raised in Lima, Peru, Chef Diego Oka serves as the Executive Chef of La Mar by Gastón Acurio at Mandarin Oriental Miami. Influenced by Peru’s diverse gastronomy and the art of Japanese cuisine, Chef Oka has worked alongside the renowned Chef Gastón Acurio since 2001, perfecting a range of culinary styles and techniques along the way, including Mexican, Columbian and American fare.
Introduced to the flavors of his native Japan at an early age, Pao Chef de Cuisine Benjamin Murray also developed a deep appreciation for a diverse range of ingredients during his culinary training. The concert features singer/songwriter Leesa Richards, a storyteller, a soulful voice offering a soundtrack to the narratives of life. Her sound taps into the deep roots of R&B, the poetry of jazz and folk and the energy of rock. Her debut solo album, Mother’s Child, is a rich blend of soulful ballads, rock and R&B, and showcases her gifts as a songwriter; it is a universal story of love and loss. She has performed with a slate of powerhouse artists including Faith Hill, The Bee Gees, Kelly Clarkson, Gloria Estefan, and Carole King, and recorded with Barbra Streisand and Lenny Kravitz, among other artists. On stage, she played the role of Mary Magdalene in the national tour of the Broadway musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, earning critical acclaim which led to featured performances throughout the US and Europe.

The remote control jet show features many pilots, an aerobatic jet show. Planes at this event include F-15, F-16, F-18 Super Hornet, BAE Hawk, and many planes to see, as well come see the 14-foot-long F-104 Star Fighter.
Sport Jet aerobatic show including high speed passes and 9G with the jets flying from 100-200mph, scales vary from 1/8 to 1/3 Scale, amazing replicas of the real Jet Fighters and all day fun of flying jets.

Momentum Dance Company, one of the oldest and most established professional contemporary dance companies in the Southeastern U.S., is proud to present its spring concert on Saturday, April 21, 2018. The Spring Concert will showcase two new works, Nacre by Artistic Director Delma Iles, and Off the Sidewalk by dancer Katie Brennan. In addition, the dancers will perform two works from repertory, Brecht Suite (1995) and Shadows and Accumulations (1992), both by Iles. The concert will consist of informal performances with audience discussion and an opportunity to meet the dancers.

The Rotary Club of Fort Lauderdale in partnership with Bobby Rodriguez, producer of the world renowned Florida Renaissance Festival, have created the first annual Fort Lauderdale Pirate Festival presented by iUniforms at Esplanade Park on the New River in Downtown Fort Lauderdale on May 12, 2018 from 11am to 7pm.

Girls’ Club presents Bark Walk, an artwalk event for all the dog-lovers in South Florida that welcomes our special furry, four-legged friends too, to benefit Pets Broward, a non-profit organization dedicated to saving shelter pets and creating a community where all pets and people are valued and treated with respect, kindness, and compassion.

The evening event will feature dog-themed art exhibition Best in Show with multi-media works from local artists, a live photo booth shoot, dog and kid friendly art making activities, kiddie pools for all species, and a heart-melting Adoptable Dog Parade of the most adorable and eligible doggy bachelors and bachelorettes looking for forever homes.

The Bible is filled with some of the world’s most beautiful lyrical poetry. Dance NOW! Miami has daringly created a new work inspired by probably the best Old Testament example of this in their “The Book of Psalms.” The company, South Florida’s leading proponent of contemporary dance, brings its emblematic graceful athleticism and syncretic of-the-moment style to this very special event. The performance, choreographed by company Artistic Directors Hannah Baumgarten and Diego Salterini, is a contemporary dance journey through the hopes, joys, loyalties, sorrows, doubts and aspirations of the human heart. The piece will feature an original score from Milwaukee Conservatory of Music percussionist DeLane Doyle, costumes from Renato Armijo of Chernaya Bridal House, a breathtaking set from Elizabeth Camargo, and lighting from Technical Director Bruce F. Brown.

Also on the program are the Miami Premiere of “Touch Me,” the duet “XY The Engine of Life,” and the World Premiere of “Here On Earth.” “Touch Me” is a reconstruction of the choreographer Gerald Arpino’s moving solo, danced to a crackling gospel score, originally created for the Joffrey Ballet in 1977. This is part of Dance NOW!’s ongoing “Masterpiece in Motion” series that brings historically important modern dance works back to life on South Florida stages. “XY The Engine of Life,” choreographed by Salterini, is a striking duet with a man and a woman who are at once spiraling DNA strands and flesh and blood people, with a return performance from Cuban dancer Isvel Bello, and scored to striking music from Miami-based Federico Bonacossa. “Here On Earth,” with choreography by Baumgarten, brings the whole company on stage for a playful exploration of our responsibility to one another, with music from Alexandre Desplat, the Books and Gil Scott-Heron.

The “Voice of Venezuela” brings her powerhouse vocals, spirit-shaking percussion and pointed lyrics to Little Havana as Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Koubek Center presents Little Havana Social Club: Betsayda Machado y Parranda El Clavo at 8 p.m., Saturday, April 21.

Machado hails from a small village near Venezuela’s coast called El Clavo, where most of its 1,500 inhabitants are descendants of slaves who worked on the region’s cacao plantations. For generations, they’ve preserved aspects of African tradition and developed a uniquely Afro-Venezuelan heritage–particularly in their music, which includes intricate African polyrhythms and percussion, call-and-response singing and close harmonies.

Her band–which includes three cocoa farming brothers, a mother and son team and Machado’s sister–has played together for nearly three decades. They are masters of parranda, a style of community music born in joyous celebrations where musicians strolled through town, commenting on daily life (parranda is also a term for “party”). The music they create preserves the tambor genre, said to make dancers float.

“When Betsayda Machado y Parranda El Clavo begin to sing, their layered harmonies and richly textured percussion are so vibrant, they swirl around your heart, soul and body so joyfully, it’s impossible to do anything but surrender and dance along.” -NPR

While the group has performed primarily at village ceremonies and celebrations, they recently made waves with debut appearances in North America–even catching the attention of the New York Times, which wrote: “The kind of group that world-music fans have always been thrilled to discover: vital, accomplished, local, unplugged, deeply rooted.”

The evening will include a complimentary pre-concert dance lesson, DJ’ed sets by Mr. Pauer, specialty food and cocktails for purchase, and more.

The Little Havana Social Club is a series dedicated to celebrating Latin American heritage through music and dance. The concerts/ dance parties promote community and engagement–from the dance floor to the domino tables. Each event features vibrant live bands, dance instruction, and vendors, all situated in the lush gardens of the historic Koubek Center mansion.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami is celebrating National Jazz Appreciation Month with a performance by the Aaron Lebos Reality ensemble as part of its monthly “Jazz at MOCA” series. The powerful and unique music group from Miami, FL, specializing in Jazz, Funk, Rock, R&B, Latin and World Music Jazz, is well-known in South Florida attracting the ears of both extraordinary musicians and mainstream audiences.

The group is comprised of Aaron Lebos, Eric England, Jim Gasior and Rodolfo Zuniga, who on their own are some of the most-in-demand musicians in South Florida and beyond. Together the four musicians bring a unique high energy and intimate musical experience to each show.

The Children’s Bereavement Center provides FREE peer support groups to children, teens, adults, and families who have experienced the loss of a loved one. We serve 1,500 people per year at nine sites throughout Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach County. The CBC serves children ages 5 through young adulthood as well as adult caregivers and adults (age 18+) with their own personal loss.

The evening is a night of casual chic dinner, dancing and shopping, all while supporting children and families grieving the loss of a loved one.

April 15 from 1-4 PM: As part of its ongoing celebration of Pride Month, the Lincoln Road BID presents “Live #onLincoln,” featuring vocalist EnVee, at the Lincoln Road stage, 1111 Lincoln Road at Alton Rd. The performance is free.

Cuban-born, Miami-raised with a vintage influence, EnVee’s background is as diverse as the music she creates. Her creativity comes from influences like Celia Cruz, Barbara Streisand, Frank Sinatra & Ella Fitzgerald to Luciano Pavarotti. She was accepted to the American Music and Dramatic Academy, a music conservatory in New York City where she quickly moved after graduating high school. This gave her the opportunity to study vocal performance, dance, acting and musical theater. Upon returning to Miami, Envee joined the music department at Miami Dade College where she became lead soloist for Juba Gospel Choir, leading them in a national competition and tour. She began her writing career shortly after that.

EnVee’s professional career has led her to a two year running show at Magic City Casino & The Casino at Dania Beach as the Opening Act for Kevin Ceballo. She has performed in great community events such as Miami Beach Gay Pride 2016 and Orgullo 2015. She wrote the theme song for the World Out Games Miami 2017, and had the honor of being the opening act for Cher at Hilary Clinton’s Presidential campaign fundraiser with the cast of The Cabaret South Beach at The Fillmore Miami Beach. She has sung the national anthem for The Florida Marlins in both 2012 & 2015, and was a special guest at the Orlando Pulse tribute at the America Airlines Area. EnVee was also invited to sing at the Miami Rocks Concert 2016 with the Miami Symphony Orchestra at the Adrienne Arsht Center. She was crowned the First “Ultimate Voice Miami” and has competed in National and International television singing competitions such as the NBC show “The Winner Is” and “Yo Soy El Artista” on Telemundo, finishing in the top 6.

EnVee can currently be seen as the featured singer at the Faena Theater, inside the Faena Hotel in their new resident show SENSATIA and is working on a new jazz project which promises not to disappoint. Her music is for all ages, multiple genres and pleases the masses. We can’t wait to hear what’s next!

In honor of Earth Day, the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society invites visitors of all ages to celebrate the living planet we call home! This year’s Earth Day theme is “End Plastic Pollution” and the riverside attraction will host the South Broward High School Coral Club who will demonstrate how we can stop water pollutants and help heal the aging coral on our reefs. Nova Southeastern University Halmos College Peer Educators will also be on-hand to answer questions about the marine ecosystem that surrounds us and Colorful Warrior Writers will offer a breezy literary respite from an otherwise warm and bustling day of activities on the New River.

The menu has been divided into: Culinary Influenced, Classics and Not So Classic. Menu highlights include the Culinary Influenced Bacon & Eggs featuring bacon-infused Buffalo Trace Bourbon, egg white, fresh lemon, honey and black pepper. New Classics include Dark n’ Stormy – a Bermuda classic, made with Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum instead of the traditional Gosling’s Rum. The latest addition to L Bar’s Not So Classic offerings is the Hibiscus Punch made with Flor de Caña Rum, fresh lemon, hibiscus syrup, pineapple and raspberries.

For those looking for a refreshing spirit-free drink, creative offerings remain on the menu including the Blood Orange Cooler with blood orange, lime, agave, soda water, and mint; Grape Rosemary Smash with green grapes, honey, simple syrup-infused rosemary, lime and soda water, topped with rosemary sprigs; and Watermelon Cilantro Fresca with watermelon chunks, cilantro, lime, agave, simple syrup, soda water and a pinch of salt.

The property also hosts Hard Rock Sessions, a series of impromptu, intimate live musical performances by both well-known and rising alternative rock acts. Local non-profit Saludarte Foundation, whose mission is to improve the health of youth and other socio-economic disadvantaged groups through the arts, announces 8-week run of Seeking the Essence, a unique artistic exhibition featuring 18 works of award-winning author and illustrator Menena Cottin. Various community events are programmed for the fully bilingual, family-friendly and interactive exhibition including author presentations, family days and a public opening reception on April 26, 2018, 6-9p.m.

Menena Cottin has already touched the lives of many. Deliver the Dream, a South Florida-based nonprofit organization that organizes retreats for families experiencing a serious illness or crisis, presents its 6th Annual Red Hot Party at Hunters. Generously amplified by Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and hosted by Daisy Dead Petals & Electra, this year’s free anticipated event begins at 7 p.m. with a scorching charity date auction showcasing some of South Florida’s most eligible LGBTQ bachelors and bachelorettes of all ages.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Deliver the Dream’s first-ever LGBTQ Youth Retreat that will host as many 15 families (at no cost to the participants) to help them enhance coping skills, reduce stress and cultivate relationships with other families who have a child struggling with “coming out.” The retreat will also incorporate an HIV educational component and offer therapeutic discussions for both teens and parents. This retreat, along with nine other planned yearly retreats spanning various crises and medical conditions including autism, cancer, Down syndrome and epilepsy, combines traditional recreational activities with therapeutic activities, peer-to-peer discussion groups and expressive arts and music activities.

Guests will have the opportunity to mix and mingle with the select group of LGBTQ bachelors and bachelorettes who come with their own unique accompanying entertainment packages which may include concert tickets, outdoor adventures, performing arts shows, sporting event seats plus dinner and much more, plus bid on silent auction items, enjoy drink specials and have fun while benefiting a great cause.

Founded in1981 in Jamestown, NY, 10,000 Maniacs is one of the most enduring bands from the early “alternative rock” movement having released close to 20 albums, including 2015’s Twice Told Tales and 2016’s Playing Favorites, while consistently touring the U.S. and abroad. This multi-platinum band still receives rave reviews of their live perfomances.
While 2017 marked the the 30 year anniversary of the release of 10,000 Maniacs’ critically acclaimed, break-out album, In My Tribe, which Rolling Stone Magazine included in their “100 Best Albums Of The Eighties”, 2018 marks 3 significant anniversaries for the band. It was 25 years ago in 1993 that that 10,000 Maniacs made their iconic performance on MTV’s “Unplugged”; the released recording would go on to sell millions of copies. Later, in that same year, Mary Ramsey, a backing vocalist on “Unplugged,” began her tenure as lead singer for the band. And 2018 marks the 35th anniversary of the release of their first full-length recording, Secrets of the I Ching, which caught the attention of BBC radio legend John Peel, who brought the band to the attention of millions of listeners worldwide. To celebrate these milestones on their 2018 tour, 10,000 Maniacs will play select acoustic sets including songs from Secrets of the I Ching and MTV Unplugged as well as their hit songs.

The Fort Lauderdale Historical Society will host an exclusive “Behind the Stacks” Tour of its Hoch Heritage Research Center, Library and Archive. This unique, exciting and educational tour, in remembrance of the centennial anniversary of the end of World War I, will feature rare books, curated photos and artifacts that highlight diverse perspectives of how residents of Florida and early Fort Lauderdale participated in the Great War. The Cuban American Bar Association will host its third-annual “Night with the Marlins” on Friday, May 11, when the Miami Marlins play the Atlanta Braves. The event, and all proceeds from ticket sales and event sponsorships, benefit the CABA Pro Bono Project, which works to meet the legal needs of the indigent Cuban-American community. The event also coincides with the ballpark’s Hispanic Heritage Night. CABA’s “Night with the Marlins” tickets include:

♣ Legends Level seating exclusively reserved for CABA supporters
♣ Marlins Hispanic Heritage jersey
♣ Food and drink vouchers
♣ Family activities
♣ Goodie bags
♣ A visit from Billy the Marlin
♣ Admission to the post-game CABA After Party at The Clevelander

The Lincoln Road B.I.D. presents “Live on Lincoln,” celebrating Pride Month in April. On Sunday April 1, “Icons of Drag” is featured in a FREE performance from 1-4 PM at 1111 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach.

Danilo de la Torrre created his character, ADORA, in 1991 and has been a staple in the Miami drag, performing arts and has also performed her act to Buenos Aires, Lima, Mexico City, San Jose Costa Rica and Paris. She will be DJing for these special events featuring Miami’s most popular drag queens. Originally from Colombia, NOEL LEON is a fabulous performer and trained dancer who performs at Molto, Palace and all over South Florida. ANGIE OVAHNESS PRYCE is high energy diva, drag queen and gymnast. She performs at R House, George’s Alibi amongst other venues. Indiana native and now Miami based, SERENITY DUPREE is a powerhouse of energy, often competing on pageants and performing at R House and Azucar.

Little Haiti Cultural Complex and the Caribbean Marketplace present Caribbean Market Day every Saturday of the month from 10am to 6pm in the Caribbean Marketplace in Little Haiti and will showcase original Afro-Caribbean entertainment, fashion, cuisine, accessories, jewelry, shoes as well as homeware, natural beauty products, books, music, arts, culture and more.

The Caribbean Marketplace (or Mache Aysisyen in Haitian Creole) was designed by architect Charles Pawley as a modern day replica of Haiti’s iron market.
