More than 130 feet long, William Kentridge’s 8-channel video installation, More Sweetly Play the Dance, encircles the viewer. Partly filmed live, partly rendered in Kentridge’s signature animated style, the work covers the walls of a gallery with images of a procession in a blasted landscape. An update of the danse macabre, this parade of death includes a brass band in the lead, followed by people carrying possessions or shrouded bodies, priests, patients dragging their IV drips, skeletons, and a live ballerina (South African dancer Dada Masilo), who wears a military uniform and carries a rifle. Wooden chairs for the viewers and four megaphones on tripods playing the soundtrack make this performative video an immersive experience. Combining elements of medieval allegory with evocations of recent sights such as Syrian refugees and bodies felled by Ebola, Kentridge presents a never-ending carnivalesque reminder of our own mortality that is by turns morbid, chilling, comic, and political. But in the artist’s hands, the triumph of death ultimately becomes a celebration of resilience and life.
William Kentridge is regarded as one of the most significant contemporary artists of our time. He has gained international recognition for his distinctive animated short films, and for the charcoal drawings he creates through a unique process of erasure and re-drawing. A native of Johannesburg, Kentridge has always addressed the more challenging and intimate aspects of contemporary life in South Africa, during both Apartheid and the post-Apartheid period, investigating the ways in which identities are shaped through shifting ideas of history and place. In the course of his examination, he explores the role of poetry in contemporary society, and offers a biting, satirical commentary of that society, proposing a way of seeing life as process rather than as fact. He is a visual artist, a filmmaker, a director, and a great raconteur. His body of work has spanned several artistic disciplines over three decades. Through the mediums of film, sculpture, installation, charcoal drawing, and his work in theater, Kentridge has explored the nature of memory and emotions, and the ambiguity and complexity of social conflicts in the age of globalization.

Lace Clips and Greentouch USA Inc. founded by Jonathan Nussbaum presents The Big Serve, a professional tennis exhibition and clinic for inner-city youth in partnership with the Irie Foundation, Overtown Youth Center, EJ Biggers Foundation, The Lotus House and the City of Miami Beach. This marks the third annual fitness-driven philanthropic event produced by Nussbaum, designed to encourage children to play tennis while educating them about health and nutrition. On Friday, 650 children from the non-profit organizations will be able to enjoy and participate in four activity stations including meet and greet/autograph opportunities with pro tennis players and other notable local celebrities, an on-site tennis clinic offering lessons from pro tennis players provided by Howie Orllin, a fitness station featuring celebrity personal trainers provided by Ki Hara and local yoga instructors as well as a concession stand courtesy of David’s Café. Miami’s own DJ Michelle Pooch will be providing the music, to ensure kids have a fun, energetic afternoon to remember. Each child will receive a special gift bag that includes an authentic HEAD tennis racquet and t-Shirt courtesy of Jonathan Nussbaum and other gifts provided by the Burger King McLamore Foundation. Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day the authentic way with a performance of the Irish musical ONCE playing now through March 25, 2018 at Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre. Set in Dublin, ONCE is the smash-hit musical that has captured hearts around the world with its touching love story, glorious music and irresistible humor. The story follows a Dublin street musician who’s about to give up on his dream when a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs. There’s no mistaking the chemistry between them. As it begins to grow, his music soars to powerful, new heights. Theirs is an unlikely connection, though, that turns out to be deeper and more complex than other everyday romances. ONCE is an unforgettable story about going for one’s dreams and the power of music to connect us all.

Actors’ Playhouse has transformed its Mainstage theatre into a Dublin bar for this much-anticipated production. Featuring Miami’s only onstage bar, audience members are invited to join in a lively music session with the cast before the show while enjoying a drink onstage in our authentic Irish pub. Doors open 30 minutes prior to showtime.

All of the music in ONCE is played live on stage by an extraordinary cast of actor-musicians. Between them, the 12 actors play 30 instruments during each performance, including guitar, cajon, melodica, harmonica, piano, violin, castanets, bass guitar, ukulele, mandolin, banjo, tambourine, drums, acccordion and cello. The company’s production includes members from the original Broadway cast as well as several actors who have performed the show regionally.

Miami, Mar 5, 2018 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Koubek Center adds a twist to its Little Havana Social Club series, presenting La Banda Morisca at the CubaOcho Arts Center in the heart of Little Havana at 6pm on Sun., Mar 18.

While Koubek Center will continue to host its popular social dance series in its gardens, on this special occasion, it is stepping out-and off site-in efforts to expand its reach and collaborate with other cultural partners. The venue could not resist the opportunity to present this renowned flamenco fusion band-direct from Jerez de la Frontera, and its timely coincidence with Miami Film Festival 2018 and MDC Live Arts’ Ojala/Inshallah series.
The changing border that separated the Arab-Andalusian Kingdom of Granada from the Crown of Aragon and Castile during the 13th and 15th century was known as “La Banda Morisca”-a place where Christians and Muslims, as well as the first gypsies coming to the Iberian Peninsula, met and coexisted.
Drawing their name and mix of influences from this strip of no-man’s-land, La Banda Morisca is a septet from Andalucia who incorporate traditions from both sides of the Mediterranean- including Andalusian moaxajas and North African chaabi- with flamenco and Andalusian rock on a range of instruments that includes oud (lute), guitarra Morisca (Moorish guitar), tarota (oboe), banjo, bass, percussion, saxophones and drums.
Acclaimed for their intoxicating blend of traditional and modern sounds, La Banda Morisca evokes the cultural heritage of ancient Al-Andalus and its lasting impact across Andalusia, the Maghreb, and the Near East.

Make it a night of Film + Music as cultural partners team up: Start your evening at The Tower Theater with Miami Film Festival’s screening of Indestructible: The Soul of Salsa, which follows Spanish flamenco singer Diego El Cigala as he embarks on a journey through Cali, Havana, Punta Cana , San Juan, Miami and New York. New Classics include Dark n’ Stormy – a Bermuda classic, made with Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum instead of the traditional Gosling’s Rum. Thirty years! That’s how long soprano saxophonist-flutist Jane Bunnett has been involved with, immersed in, and dedicated herself to the music of Cuba.
The latest chapter in Jane’s excursion is Maqueque, Jane’s exciting, energetic, all-female, all-Cuban sextet. “Everything I’ve done has led up to this group, which is the perfect vehicle for now,” Jane says with pride. Brought together and led by Jane, all of the five players have grown into a tight ensemble and individually blossomed into confident composers. After winning a 2014 JUNO Award (the Canadian equivalent of a GRAMMY) for their eponymously named first recording, the 2017 sophomore release for Maqueque, “Oddara,” nominated for a 2018 GRAMMY® for Best Latin Jazz Album, expands upon the Afro-Cuban format established on the first effort, and further exhibits the superb collective talent that comprises this acclaimed, energetic group. Aventura Mall will host a fundraising event for Branches of Bravery, a charitable organization created by students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. Branches of Bravery will plant 17 trees in front of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in honor of the 17 innocent lives that were taken too soon. In addition, funds will be allocated toward building a reflection garden in the community.

For a suggested $10 minimum donation, Aventura Mall visitors will receive a tile on which they can include a design, quote, or inspirational message to the students. The group also will be selling T-shirts and bracelets. Donations can also be made on the group’s GoFundMe page: https://www.gofundme.com/branches-of-bravery.

The tiles will be used to create a temporary wall that will stand at Aventura Mall – linking the ongoing support of the shopping center to students at the Parkland campus. Eventually, the tiles will serve as a pathway at the garden.

The new kid’s hair salon will host a grand opening event on Saturday, March 10. As part of the special celebration, and for a limited time only, Snip-its South Miami will offer haircuts for $9.99. Additionally, the first 50 customers to visit the location will receive a special gift. Join us this Saturday for a very exciting concert of New Music as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of @FM (Frequency Modulation) with its inventor and music icon, Stanford Professor John Chowning. The concert features new work by University of Miami’s Frost Electroacoustic Music Ensemble with Greg Evans and Alec Druth; and Violist Diana Wade with Mezzo-soprano Jennifer Beattie performing seminal compositions from some of the greats of avant garde music.
John Chowning is the musician and researcher whose discovery led to the first electronic music synthesizers, which have since produced sounds that revolutionized all genres of music. His FM algorithm gives today’s electronic synthesizers and organs the ability to simulate wide ranging musical textures and sounds, including the human voice.
Los Angeles, California based Violist Diana Wade and Mezzo-soprano Jennifer Beattie will perform contemporary works by groundbreaking new music composers Beglarian, Norman, Saariaho, Sciarrino, Schankler, as well as Wade’s original compositions. Diana has been praised for playing with “both athletic and operatic ferocity with a physical force that shook her and a sonic one that practically shook the walls”.
This concert is presented in collaboration with Foundation for Emerging Technologies and Arts as part of their FETA FM FEST celebrating Stanford Professor John Chowning and the 50th anniversary of his groundbreaking invention Frequency Modulation synthesis.

Grillin N’ Chillin kicks off BBQ season with a full-blown countryside event that’s free for the entire family. A master trumpeter “uniquely poised to reconcile jazz and Arabic music without doing either harm” –the Wire

Iraqi- American musician Amir ElSaffar has created techniques to play on the trumpet the microtones and ornaments found in Arabic music but not typically heard on brass. As a composer, he uses this to create an innovative approach to harmony and melody, seen in his commissions for jazz ensembles, Chamber Orchestras, and Middle Eastern Ensembles alike.

In 2018, this annual series returns in collaboration with Miami Dade College’s MDC Live Arts. It invites audiences into a meditative space through instrumental, traditional and innovative sounds from the Middle East. With support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge and the Doris Duke Foundation, The Rhythm Foundation and MDC Live Arts create an opportunity to build a connection with cultures primarily in the public eye for conflict zones. Victoria Rogers, Vice President of Arts for Knight Foundation, said: “Few things can bring people together like the arts. Events like this series are a great prism for exploring our and other cultures, and for finding the threads that unite us all.”

Bodacious Bodices & Wenches Weekend – March 3rd and 4th – Behind every good man is a wench in the trench. Wenches Weekend celebrates the women of the Renaissance with hourglass curves and firey attitudes who can go toe-to-toe with their male counterparts.

The iconic Florida Renaissance Festival will ring in its 26th season, and, for the third year in a row, will offer an extraordinary SEVEN theme-filled weekends as well as a fantastical journey back in time with a variety of fan favorite acts and performances. Westfield Broward is launching their Beauty and Balance program during the entire month of March featuring month long retailer promotions to promote Beauty, Health and Wellness to the local community. A full schedule of events will take place Saturday, March 10th and Sunday, March 11th and are free and open to the public from noon to 4pm.

On Saturday, March 10th the community can enjoy Beauty and Balance themed activities including a braid bar, nail art, make-up seminar, hair demonstrations, healthy food samplings, and tips on how to pose for photos and selfies. One lucky winner will have the chance to have her makeup done by a celebrity makeup artist at the event.

Sunday, March 11th, the fun continues with several fitness classes provided by the City of Plantation. The day will start with Zumba, and continue with Yoga and Self Defense and additional classes, demonstrations and activities.

The weekend events will be held at the main stage area in JCPenney Court. Mall guests can capture their photos in a prop-themed photo booth. There will also be giveaways and raffle prizes with the Beauty and Balance theme. The first 100 registered guests each day will receive a special Westfield Broward gift. Additional entries will have the opportunity for a chance to win gifts from stores in the mall.

The crew at Hand Rolled: A Film About Cigars will be joining Prime Cigar and Whiskey Bar for the evening to promote their new project about the premium cigar world. Join the directors, Jesse Marriut and Steve Gherebean, to watch a trailer of the film, which details how master rollers have perfected their craft, along with helping viewers understand what goes into the cigar experience. Patrons will also have to opportunity to speak with the directors personally and if interested, contribute towards the completion of the project.

Foundation Cigar Company has been behind the project since the inception and they are partnering with Hand Rolled to generate exposure and support for the film. Sampler packs from their factory will be for sale with a voucher for a digital download of the film when it’s completed. Several raffles will be conducted throughout the night and the proceeds of that and the sampler packs will be donated to the project.

On February 28th at Ball & Chain, HAVANA CLUB rum will host the first-ever, private showing of the “Amparo” performance in Miami.

HAVANA CLUB rum recently launched its “Forever Cuban” campaign to uphold the authenticity of the rum’s Cuban heritage and assert its rightful place as the original HAVANA CLUB rum. To further affirm HAVANA CLUB rum as “Forever Cuban,” the brand is tapping into its heritage and retelling the story behind the original creators of the renowned rum with an immersive theatrical experience, aptly titled “Amparo.”

“Amparo” will transform attendees into travelers, complete with Cuban visas and travel guides, and transport them to the truth of the HAVANA CLUB story, beginning in pre-revolution Cuba in 1957 and concluding in modern day Miami. It is a story of industry and innovation, tragedy and betrayal, redemption and reclamation that many Cuban exiles have faced.

Along the journey, travelers will experience pivotal moments in the Arechabala family story that have defined the exiled rum brand. These emotionally charged scenes will unveil, for the first time, not only the injustices that the Cuban regime performed against the Arechabala family, but also the family’s long legacy. A legacy that the government tried to erase, but which history has recorded.

Most importantly, travelers will follow Ramon Arechabala, who managed to take his family’s rum recipe with him, out of Cuba. Ramon shared that recipe, along with the Arechabala family’s legacy, with Bacardi to ensure a future for what his family had made and what had been stolen from them. The Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus (FTLGMC) will present “Our Time With Sondheim,” an inspiring evening of music from Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim, with special guest performances by Broadway and opera superstars Lisa Vroman and Martha Bartz. The Chorus with its very special guest stars will perform two shows that will pay tribute to the consummate American composer and lyricist known for more than a half-century for his contributions to musical theater.

Performances will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church located at 333 Tarpon Drive in Fort Lauderdale on Friday, March 16 at 8 pm and Sunday, March 18 at 4 pm.

Special guest star Lisa Vroman is a Broadway Leading Lady who holds the record for most performances as Christine Daae’ in Phantom of the Opera. Recognized by the great Cameron Mackintosh as “one of American Musical Theater’s most beautiful voices,” Harold Prince says that “few ladies today possess the exquisite voice, clarity and range of Lisa Vroman.”

Joining Vroman and the Chorus is opera titan Martha Bartz, an in-demand Mezzo Soprano direct from a performance at Lincoln Center in New York. Friday, February 23, from 8-9:15 PM: The Bobby Thomas Jr Quintet: Two-time Grammy Award nominee Robert “Bobby” Thomas Jr. has wowed audiences around the globe for more than three decades. Widely considered one of the most important percussionists in music history, his lightning-fast hands and percussive pyrotechnics prompted the great Joe Zawinul to bestow upon him the title of “Hand Drummer.”

After graduating from high school, Thomas studied at Miami-Dade Community College. During this time, he discovered jazz, and began to play with saxophonist Jet Nero at the Gold Dust lounge and other artists including Ira Sullivan, Billy Marcus, Zoot Sims, Thad Jones, Monty Alexander and Mel Lewis. In the late 70s, Thomas played at a benefit with Jaco Pastorius in Miami Springs. Soon afterward, Thomas auditioned with Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter’s jazz fusion group Weather Report at a live performance in New Haven, Connecticut.

Bobby played with Weather Report and its successor bands Weather Update, The Zawinul Syndicate, and Jaco Pastorius’ Word of Mouth Band. He has recorded and toured with the likes of Stan Getz, Ahmad Jamal, Monty Alexander, Sir Roland Hanna, Zoot Sims, Herbie Mann, Eddie Harris, Branford Marsalis, Ahmad Jamal, Junior Mance, Paul Desmond, Johnny James, Monty Alexander, Wes Montgomery, and Roberto Perera. World artists he has played with include sitar player Amitava Chatterjee, and African artist Vinx. Currently a core member of The Zawinul Legacy Band, Thomas has issued several solo CDs, on which he plays an eclectic mix of instruments including conga drums, wind instruments, guitar and the African bow harp. He also leads a new group, The Alien Brothers: 7th World, who are putting together a debut album soon to be released.

Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign invites South Florida residents to sip and sample the area’s most celebrated culinary creations to help kids in need at this year’s 30th annual Taste of the Nation for No Kid Hungry on April 27, 2018. Hosted at Ice Palace Films Studios, the annual tasting event will feature gourmet cuisine and libations crafted by the city’s top chefs, sommeliers, mixologists and brewers as they unite to raise funds to ensure all children in America have access to the healthy food they need, every day.
One-hundred-percent of proceeds from the event benefit No Kid Hungry’s work to end childhood hunger in America.
The 30th annual tasting event will take place from 7PM to 10PM, followed by an exclusive Chef’s Party for VIP ticket holders at Wynwood’s own R House from 10PM to midnight.
Led by Chef Chairman Timon Balloo, South Florida’s culinary tastemakers will provide guests with scrumptious bite-size fare, craft cocktails and delectable desserts. The benefit will also feature a silent auction with exclusive packages to bid on.
The party will continue just down the street at R House where Chef/Owner Rocco Carulli will team up with additional restaurants to treat guests to tasty bites and pours late into the night. Additional news about the after party will be announced at a later date.

The Lincoln Road B.I.D. presents “Live on Lincoln,” featuring the Lisanne Lyons Jazz Ensemble. The FREE concert runs from 1-4 PM at the Lincoln Road Sateg, 1111 Lincoln Road (at Alton), Miami Beach. Lisanne has headlined at the Ottawa, Detroit, and Clearwater Jazz Festivals, and La Nuit du Jazz (France). She was the first to perform live the Nelson Riddle arrangements of the George Gershwin Songbook that he wrote for Ella Fitzgerald, who only recorded them. She has been featured with the Woody Herman Orchestra, Maynard Ferguson, Arturo Sandoval, Roanoke Symphony, Palm Beach Pops, XL Big Band in Sweden, Nantes Big Band, Los Alas Studio Orchestra, and various bands and orchestras across the country.

Forte dei Marmi knows that a family that dines and draws together stays together, which is why they introduce Sunday Family Funday Drawing Club on Sunday, February 25.
 
The first of three special drawing sessions devoted to “The Still Life,” the family affair will be taught by Miami-based contemporary artist Salvador Zarate. Bringing an open mind and appetite is all that is needed as drawing materials will be provided by the Club. Each session culminates with dinner, curated by Two Michelin-Starred chef Antonio Mellino, using ingredients featured in the “still life.” A children’s pre-fixe menu will also available for $25. Dinner reservation is mandatory as space is limited.
