They’ve crossed the ocean for Miami’s biggest art festival of the year. Eight of Holland’s greatest creative minds have joined forces to create a visual playground in their pop-up art gallery in the heart of Wynwood during Miami Art week 2019. Known for their public art projects and street art exhibitions with world’s most prolific artists at their gallery in Rotterdam and around the world, Sober Collective Art Gallery brings their pop-up exhibition to Miami.

CHECK OUT ALL DATES AND TIMES BELOW:

December 1 – December 30, 2019

Sober Collective Art Gallery // 80 NE 29th Street, Wynwood

During Miami Art Week from Dec 1-8, the exhibit will be open to guests from 10 a.m.-12 a.m.

From December 9-30, it will be open from 12 p.m.-10 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays and from 10 a.m. – 11 p.m. Wednesday-Sundays.

Our Grand Opening exhibition at Sober Collective Art Gallery will be on December 8, from 7 p.m. – 12 a.m.

Known as “The Dutch Master of Light,” Tim Boin curated this selection of 8 of the best Dutch street artists in cross-combination with his own solo exhibition ‘Geometry is Life’ at the W South Beach during Miami Art Week. His group of artists all excel in bold, abstract and unconventional large-scale work found internationally and celebrated globally.

About the Artists:
Tim Boin Art: Conscious elements are at the root of Tim’s message. Celebrated for his larger-than-life sculptures, he depicts the ecosystem’s sensitive state. Using 3D Mapping, Tim literally and figuratively sheds light on his geometric sculptures of endangered species in his most recent work.
digitaldoes: He focuses on collecting pieces from past walls and reshaping them into a new form to use as core elements in his new pieces. He perpetuates the past and makes new work traceable to a specific google coordinate of a bygone wall. From China to Mexico and Australia to New York, his work has been found all across the globe.
Saïd Kinos: His work expresses a fascination for the way people communicate with each other. It’s recognizable by his high-contrast use of distorted typography. His visual overkill is a metaphor for the amount of information we have to process on a daily basis.
TELMO MIEL: This creative duo evolved from creating individual pieces on one mural into developing one image, one composition together. They focus on playfulness in abstraction of reality; attempting to make the viewer see opposite perspectives and subjects with a different eye.
Joram Roukes: Using juxtapositions of imagery, he creates abstract narratives and figures that evoke introspection and contemplation. His work gained attention from several international galleries, and he actively paints large-scale murals across the globe, including Copenhagen, Paris, Berlin, San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles and London, to name a few.
Bier en Brood: Inspired by machines, nature and architecture, they possess a unique style, often interpreted as sinister and apocalyptic. Their preferred mediums include highly detailed pen drawings, spray-cans and paint for their large-scale work.
Mossy Giant: He has a slightly neurotic fascination with detailed line-work and stories within stories. Not made for the easily distracted, recurring themes in this work include nature, man, beast & machine.
Zevous: His company, Dutch Deco Finish, specializes in wall and furniture finishes for amusement parks and large festivals, which has led to over a decade of developing relationships with artists worldwide; and after these artists began approaching him to commission exclusive works of art, it has inspired him to create his own extensive portfolio.

Dutch DJ Damoulis is setting sound waves to this visual playground, mastering in Miami-favorite sounds like Afrobeats, AfroHouse, Latin and Dutch urban music and dancehall.

Miami, Florida 33137

Preceding the world-renowned art festival Art Basel, Miami Jewish Health, South Florida’s largest nonprofit care center, is hosting its own.

MJ Basel is Miami Jewish Health’s fifth annual art exhibition, in which residents and staff showcase their works of art alongside pieces done by some of South Florida’s best local artists. Members of the South Florida community are invited to enjoy food, drinks and live music while experiencing the talents of our residents and other members of the community.

Art is not only a form of self-expression and storytelling, but it also acts as a form of therapy. Miami Jewish Health residents take part in art classes each day, and some who suffer from Alzheimer’s and dementia use art as a form of relaxation therapy. In an effort to support these classes, 20% of all art sales at MJ Basel go directly to Miami Jewish Health’s art programs.

Local South Florida artists participating include Serge Toussaint, Erika King and more.

About Sweet Caroline Bar

Sweet Caroline Karaoke Bar was opened in 2018 with one purpose in mind – to bring people together through singing, dancing, laughing, and drinking! Since then, that’s exactly what we’ve accomplished.

Our American-style karaoke bar has hosted thousands of singers from locals and tourists, amateurs and professionals, solos and duets. Our stage and spotlight can make even the shyest singer look and feel like a rock-star. With two big screen tv’s for the lyrics, and DJs that know how to get the party going, the entire crowd and even our staff are part of each and every song.

We are proud to have opened a bar for the community to gather and have fun in a unique and exciting way. Whether you like classic rock or hip-hop, reggaeton or salsa, 70’s, 80’s, or 90’s music, we’re waiting for you to come sing and have fun at Sweet Caroline Karaoke Bar!

Make Music Miami, the annual celebration of music on the summer solstice, returns this year on Monday, June 21 with dozens of free, virtual and in-person outdoor concerts, music lessons, jam sessions and other exciting music-making events, spotlighting music’s power to connect, comfort, unite and uplift. Miami is among the 90+ U.S. cities hosting major celebrations, in what has become a worldwide phenomenon observed by hundreds of millions of people in over 1,000+ cities in 120 countries. Safety protocols will be in place following local requirements, including mask-wearing, social distancing and limited capacities and group sizes.
Completely different from a typical music festival, Make Music Miami celebrates and promotes the natural music maker in all of us, regardless of ability. Reimagining their cities and towns as stages, every kind of musician – from bucket drummers and opera singers to hip-hop artists and marching bands – pours onto streets, parks, plazas, porches, rooftops, gardens, beaches and other public spaces to celebrate, create and share their music with friends, neighbors and strangers. Due to the pandemic, last year’s celebration was largely virtual, but many in-person events will return in 2021.

For more detailed information, visit makemusicmiami.org. Finalized programming will be posted here the week of the event.

Get a firsthand look into the artistic world of the Godfather of Funk himself!

While the museum is currently closed to the public, this program will be offered remotely via Facebook Live and YouTube Live.

Become an Ambassador for African American Art today for an opportunity to participate in an intimate post-program conversation with Clinton. Your participation will help PAMM acquire and exhibit major works by African American artists for years to come.

7pm | Public Live Virtual Art Talk
8:05pm | Ambassadors Meet the Artist Virtual Reception

George Clinton was born on July 22, 1941, and is an iconic singer, songwriter, bandleader, and record producer. Recording as both Parliament and Funkadelic, Clinton revolutionized popular music during the ’70s and ’80s with an avant-garde style that continues today. His Parliament-Funkadelic collective (which primarily recorded under the distinct band names Parliament and Funkadelic) developed an influential and eclectic form of funk music during the 1970s that drew on science fiction, outlandish fashion, psychedelia, and surreal humor. For over five decades, his unparalleled sound has been cited as the DNA of Hip Hop and Urban Culture.

As a visual artist, Clinton’s body of work is as adventurous and eclectic as his music. Early on he designed the iconic Mothership spaceship for use as a centerpiece stage prop for Parliament-Funkadelic live performances. It is now on permanent display at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC.

Clinton is regarded as one of the foremost innovators of funk music. In 1977, he and Parliament-Funkadelic were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and then, in 2019, were honored with the pinnacle Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Piano Slam 2024 4/11/24

Piano Slam 2024

Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts
1300 Biscayne Blvd,
Miami, Florida, 33132
Website
Cost: Free

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County and the Dranoff 2 Piano Foundation are proud to present PIANO SLAM 2024 on April 11, 2024 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center’s Knight Concert Hall. Taking place during National Poetry Month, the event features Miami’s top teen poets who will share their original spoken word mash-ups paired with classical and hip-hop music around the theme, “My Music, Miami, All We Can Save – Rhythms & Writings of Restoration,” and set to “Suite Afro Cubana to Lico Jimenez” created by the legendary Cuban artist, Chucho Valdés.

Admission to PIANO SLAM 2024 is free*. First-Access Passes, which give guests early access to general admission seating, can be reserved for the performance now. Reserve passes online at arshtcenter.org by calling the Adrienne Arsht Center box office at 305- 949-6722.

In its 17th year, PIANO SLAM features live musical performances and program opportunities for students, families and teachers. This year’s focus centers on the history of artists neglected through cultural suppression. The chosen musical piece for this theme is “Suite Afro Cubana to Lico Jimenez,” Chucho Valdés’ composition dedicated to reclaiming the legacy of Afro-Cuban composers and musicians who have been unjustly overlooked. The poetry competition will expand to include student music and soundscapes that should be safeguarded for future generations. It will also include writing workshops for educators that will include the inspiration of music and the sounds of our environment.

“I am so proud that my piece ‘Suite Afro Cubana to Lico Jimenez’ was selected to be part of Piano Slam 2024. This program and its young generation of poets will help us keep alive Lico’s name and legacy in our culture,” says Chucho Valdés.

In a career spanning more than 60 years, both as a solo artist and bandleader, Valdés has distilled elements of the Afro-Cuban music tradition, jazz, classical music, rock and more, into a deeply personal style. Winner of seven GRAMMY® and six Latin GRAMMY® Awards, Valdés received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Science in 2023 and was also inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame.

“PIANO SLAM 2024 is a dynamic convergence of Miami’s young poets and the rhythmic legacy of Chucho Valdés, weaving together spoken word and music in a celebration of restoration, inclusion and the enduring power of artistic expression,” says Carlene Sawyer, Piano Slam creator and producer.

PIANO SLAM presents live concerts, poets, scientists and hip-hop spoken word to teens in Miami’s middle and high school classrooms culminating in a countywide poetry competition based on the role of music in their lives. Out of thousands of creative submissions, 16 semifinalists are chosen to perform in the Grand Finals concert and competition on the Arsht Center’s Knight Concert Hall stage. Prizes of $1,000 are awarded to the top student poets. For the past 11 years, PIANO SLAM has included a STEAM track and has taken students and their teachers to music performances, provided teacher workshops, environmental science research activities, and citizen science field trips by students to study environmental issues impacting their lives.

For over a decade, the Dranoff 2 Piano Foundation’s PIANO SLAM has been bridging the creative divide between teenage music enthusiasts and professional performance artists across Miami-Dade County, from Hialeah to the beaches and Miami Gardens to Homestead. The event is co-presented with the Adrienne Arsht Center and sponsored by some of Miami’s most respected institutions, including Miami-Dade County, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Books & Books, The Children’s Trust, and the Miami HEAT.

PIANO SLAM is directed by Tanisha Cidel with music direction by Martin Bejerano. PIANO SLAM’s wildly popular County-wide music-based poetry competition has worked with more than 150,000 Miami-Dade Public middle and high school students making classical music fun and an inspiration for their own creative writing. Additional musicians include: Anthony “Tony” Laurencio, DJ and the New Canon Chamber Collective for the classical ensemble.

About the Dranoff 2 Piano x Adrienne Arsht Center Partnership
The partnership between The Dranoff Foundation and the Adrienne Arsht Center dates back to 2006, when the Arsht Center had just opened. The Dranoff Foundation, which aims to discover young artists, nurture their talent, and provide them with a platform to showcase their music, joined forces with the Arsht Center to establish a community school-based outreach program in the performing arts. This program was designed to serve young people and their families in the neighborhoods surrounding the new performing arts center.

In the very first year of the PIANO SLAM program, five middle schools located in Overtown, Liberty City, Brownsville, and Little Haiti – participated. Today, more than 100 middle and high schools in Miami Dade Public Schools enjoyed in-school professional artist programs and performances and submitted student poetry to the music-based competition.

Over the 15 years in partnership with the Arsht Center’s community engagement and education initiatives, Dranoff 2 Piano Foundation has brought artists, musicians, scientists and educators into over 100 middle and high schools and every school and community district in the county. The ArshtCenter has partnered in teacher professional development, training educators in all core subjects to use music and arts-integrated curriculum in their classrooms.

Dranoff 2 Piano and the Arsht Center provide performance, art, music, writing, coaching and training for students participating in PIANO SLAM. The Adrienne Arsht Center provides a world-class community-based platform for students and top professional artists to perform in the Finals competition concert in the Knight Concert Hall. Tens of thousands of families throughout Miami Dade County have become part of Miami’s art scene through PIANO SLAM in the schools and the Dranoff 2 Piano performances with award-winning musicians, dancers and top theater professionals as part of a student and professional artist extravaganza of great entertainment in the Knight Concert Hall.

MIAMI – March 26, 2024 – The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County (@arshtcenter) is proud to present THE FORGOTTEN FOUNDING FATHERS written and produced by hip-hop legend Karl “Dice Raw” Jenkins (@DiceRaw), a frequent collaborator with hip-hop mega group and “The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon” co-stars, The Roots, as part of the Center’s Family Fun Live! Series. THE FORGOTTEN FOUNDING FATHERS will be presented on April 20, 2024 at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and April 21, 2024 at 3 p.m. inside the Center’s intimate Carnival Studio Theater.

Tickets for THE FORGOTTEN FOUNDING FATHERS are $30* and may be purchased now online at arshtcenter.org, or at the Arsht Center box office by calling (305) 949-6722.

THE FORGOTTEN FOUNDING FATHERS takes the audience on a captivating, theatrical and hip-hop journey that explores American history through the lens of African American, Latino and Indigenous heroes during some of the country’s most pivotal times, including the American Revolutionary War, Civil War and Reconstruction.

The family-friendly show spotlights heroes such as Prince Whipple, Wentworth Cheswell, Colonel Ty Cornelius, Sojourner Truth, Bernardo de Galvez and Phillis Wheatley. Unlike other historical education that highlights the pain and suffering of African Americans, Latino and Indigenous peoples, THE FORGOTTEN FOUNDING FATHERS aims to teach the contributions of these communities to the country.

In addition to the public performances that week, the Arsht Center has arranged for Karl Jenkins and the cast to visit Miami-Dade County public high schools for a series of workshops designed to engage students in a creative exploration of history through songwriting, acting and discussions of historical relevance and philosophy. Through interactive activities and discussions, students will gain a deeper understanding of the historical context and philosophical ideas that shaped the Founding Fathers’ legacy. Student performances at the Arsht Center will take place on April 18-19.

On Sunday, March 24th, celebrate Purim in Paris at Ostrow Brasserie in Buena Vista from 6-10pm. Guests are invited to dress in their favorite French designer or French theme to win a bottle of bubbly with dinner. Live music and French cuisine. Reservations available via Resy.

A DJ will spin the tunes, and Chef Olivia Ostrow will serve her signature dishes like Lyonnaise Salad with Poached Egg, Frisée, Beef “Bacon” Croutons and Tarragon Vinaigrette; Lamb Shank & Jardiniere with Port Wine Reduction and Parisienne Carrots; Trout Amandine with Almonds and Yellow String Beans; Duck Confit with Potatoes Sarladaises; and Beef Bourguignon with Carrots and Shallots and more.

Ostrow Brasserie is located at 4850 NW 2nd Ave; and is open for dinner from Sunday to Thursday (6-10 PM) and brunch every Sunday (10:30 AM to 3 PM).

More about Ostrow Brasserie:
As Miami’s first (and only) French-Kosher restaurant, Ostrow Brasserie is winning raves for its innovative cuisine, which blends classical French dishes with Kosher cooking techniques. Like all certified Glatt Kosher restaurants, Ostrow Bistro is under the supervision of a mashgiach to ensure Kosher standards are being upheld.

Located in the trendy Buena Vista neighborhood, two minutes north of the Design District, the vibe is sophisticated and cozy. The brasserie-style space features an open kitchen, tropical oasis back patio, and private dining room.

The design of the 3,000-square-foot Ostrow Brasserie was inspired by Chef Olivia’s childhood in France, complemented by Miami’s tropical influences. A whimsical art wall highlights over 40 pieces from Chef Olivia’s personal collection, while the signature Art Nouveau mural, a replica of one of artist Alphonse Mucha’s famous beer posters, at the restaurant’s entrance pays tribute to France’s storied past.

A Trompe-l’œil signature décor element features a door cut out of the original Mucha mural leading to the private dining room, with a second, identical mural on the back wall. The optical illusion adds a playful touch to the restaurant’s décor.

Stunning coral countertops speckled with opalescent “rocks” set the tone for the beautifully designed 150-seat restaurant. Adorning the two bars at the entrance, the coral and rock theme is also incorporated in the expansive counter fronting the exhibition kitchen, where guests can watch the art of cooking as it occurs. Dark green leather-backed stools allow for a birds-eye view of the culinary theatrics.

Hanging copper bubble lights are suggestive of France’s favorite drink, Champagne. The white leather rounded chairs had a former life at the iconic Delano hotel and have been recovered and restored for this venture.
Toward the back of the restaurant, past two glass doors, is a secret garden. This lush and verdant space is open for regular dining as well as for private parties and events. It’s also dog-friendly for guests accompanied by their pets.

Ostrow Brasserie is located at 4850 NW 2nd Ave; and is open for dinner from Sunday to Thursday (6-10 PM) and brunch every Sunday (10:30 AM to 3 PM).

For further information about Ostrow Brasserie, please visit www.ostrowbrasserie.com and follow @ostrowbrasserie.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) will celebrate its newest exhibitions, “Lonnie Holley: If You Really Knew” and “South Florida Cultural Consortium” (SFCC) with an opening reception on Wednesday, May 10. Art patrons will have the opportunity to browse the exhibitions while enjoying live music, cocktails and canapés in MOCA’s Paradise Courtyard. MOCA’s Executive Director Chana Sheldon, Curator Adeze Wilford, artist Lonnie Holley and the 12 participating South Florida Cultural Consortium artists will be present.

“Lonnie Holley: If You Really Knew” invites visitors to experience the work of prolific artist Lonnie Holley in his first major exhibition in the South. SFCC showcases the work of 12 intergenerational South Florida artists selected to show their work in the “South Florida Cultural Consortium (SFCC)” exhibition. Both exhibitions go on view May 10 through Oct. 1, 2023.

“Lonnie Holley: If You Really Knew” provides an intimate and focused look at the career of Birmingham, Alabama-born artist and musician Lonnie Holley. The exhibition, curated by MOCA curator Adeze Wilford, features 70 works including foundational “sandstone” sculptures, new works on paper and large-scale quilt paintings that depict faces. Known for his unique style of art that draws inspiration from his life experiences, Holley often incorporates found objects and everyday materials, which he transforms into thought-provoking art. Holley’s influence on Southern art is highlighted throughout “If You Only Knew,” including a section he curated featuring works from artists including Miami native Purvis Young, Thornton Dial, Mary T. Smith and Hawkins Bowling.

The SFCC exhibition brings together 12 artists working across various media including, sculpture, film and site-specific installations. The exhibition, this year hosted and organized by MOCA, will provide a snapshot of the breadth and depth of the artistic talent in the South Florida art scene. A catalogue will be published to accompany the exhibition.

The 12 artists, Farley Aguilar, Gabino A. Castelán, Nereida Garcia-Ferraz, Moira Holohan, Francesco Lo Castro, Tory Mata, Beatriz Monteavaro, Ema Ri, Asser Saint-Val, Carin Wagner, Carrington Ware and Addison Wolff, were selected through the SFCC 2021-2022 Visual and Media Artists Program, which awards a grant and the opportunity to take part in an exhibition at a visual arts institution in one of the five counties (Broward, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe or Palm Beach).

The exhibitions will be accompanied by a series of exciting public programming and educational experiences. More details will be announced.

On view outside the museum is MOCA’s most recent “Art on the Plaza” commission, Edison Peñafiel’s installation, “Run, Run, Run Like the Wind.” This colorful display of nine banners will hang from the highest point of the palm trees throughout MOCA’s Plaza, showcasing characters on the run and accompanied by text taken from Latin American protest songs. Peñafiel’s work will highlight the act of escape during political turmoil, speaking to themes of human migration, displacement and social justice.

Guests will also have the opportunity to view “Welcome to Paradise,” a commissioning program featuring temporary public art projects by South Florida artists in MOCA’s Paradise Courtyard. The first installation, “Victory Garden” by artist Emmett Moore draws inspiration from victory gardens planted during wartime to supplement rations and boost morale. The installation is an interactive sculptural garden that connects the community with contemporary art and examines our relationship with the environment. Utilizing sustainable materials such as repurposed steel drums to form planters, “Victory Garden” includes plants native to South Florida and the Caribbean.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra Presents Saint-Saëns Featuring Tao Lin and Schubert Masterworks 11/12/23

South Florida Symphony Orchestra Presents Saint-Saëns Featuring Tao Lin and Schubert Masterworks
Sunday, 11/12/2023-, 06:30 pm-09:30 pm
New World Center
500 17th Street,
Miami Beach, Florida, 33139
Website
Cost: $25-$95

Saint-Saëns and Schubert Masterworks will launch South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s (SFSO) 26th season of artistic excellence at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 12, at New World Center in Miami Beach (500 17th Street). Led by Music Director Sebrina María Alfonso, SFSO will premiere its stirring, exotic performance of Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 5, Op. 103, “Egyptian” featuring guest artist Tao Lin on piano and Schubert’s majestic Symphony No. 9, C Major, D. 944, “The Great.”

Known as the “Egyptian,” Camille Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 5 is an aural voyage down the Nile, ripe with the exotic sounds of the Middle East. Written in 1896, 20 years after his prior piano concerto, and subsequently his last, this concerto was nicknamed “The Egyptian” for two reasons. The piece was composed in the temple town of Luxor while on one of his frequent winter vacations to Egypt, and it is among his most fascinating, displaying influences from Javanese and Spanish as well as Middle eastern music. Saint-Saëns said that the piece represented a sea voyage.

Performing Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 5, Op. 103, “Egyptian” is Chinese American concert pianist and Steinway Artist Tao Lin. As a soloist, he has performed with South Florida Symphony, as well as other orchestras including Moscow Chamber, Winnipeg Symphony, Atlantic Classical, and Knoxville Civic. As a recitalist, he has appeared at Kennedy Center, National Gallery of Art, Rockefeller University, Chautauqua Institute, Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Minnesota Orchestra Hall, Izumi Hall (Osaka, Japan), and Edvard Grieg Museum in Norway. He has also appeared in concerts with Aspen Trio, Miami, Bergonzi, Alcon, Ying, Shanghai, and Rosalyra String Quartets, as well as distinguished musicians. A frequent pianist and lecturer at the Music Festival of the Hamptons, Mainly Mozart Festival, Music Mountain Chamber Music Festival, Arts Rolla Festival, Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival, and Festival Miami, Lin is currently a visiting professor at Shanghai Normal University and a piano faculty at Bowdoin International Music Festival.

Franz Schubert’s final symphony was originally called “The Great C” to distinguish it from his Symphony No. 6. Today it’s referred to simply as “The Great” because of its awesome grandeur. Often cited as the first of the big Romantic symphonies, 9th Symphony is an extended essay which is confident, outgoing, discursive and expansive in nature – rather more public than personal. Sadly, Schubert never heard his “Great” symphony. Its first public professional performance did not take place until a decade after his death. Listen carefully and you’ll find that in Schubert’s finale, he quotes Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony’s “Ode to Joy” theme to both acknowledge his debt to Beethoven and daringly compete with his reputation. The unexpected, subtle placement of the quotation within the middle of the movement adds a dream-like quality to the composition.

Following its highly acclaimed 25th anniversary season, including sold-out shows and a celebrated performance accompanying award-winning alt-rock indie vocalist Natalie Merchant, South Florida’s largest symphonic orchestra is continuing its musical journey of excellence inspiring audiences of all ages.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra Presents Tchaikovsky and Bruch 4/18/24

South Florida Symphony Orchestra Presents Tchaikovsky and Bruch
Thursday, 04/18/2024-, 07:30 pm-09:30 pm
Temple Israel of Greater Miami
137 NE 19th St,
Miami, Florida, 33132

Cost: $36

Become enraptured in the drama of Tchaikovsky and the sprightly Highland-inspired melodies of Bruch as South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) presents an exuberant April Masterworks finale to a triumphant season! Led by Sebrina María Alfonso, SFSO will perform Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64 and Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy in E-flat major, Op. 46 featuring Huifang Chen, SFSO’s associated conductor and concertmaster, on violin, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, at Temple Israel of Greater Miami (137 NE 19th Street).

A sense of deep longing underscores Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s (1840 – 1893) Symphony No. 5. in E minor, Op. 64. Composed in 1888, the work takes audiences on a storied journey inspired by “Fate” – beginning with deep gloomy chords that evolve into musical transitional canter culminating in an exhilarating joyful coda of triumph as we rejoice in the power of the human spirit. Today, during a quite different kind of global struggle, Symphony No. 5 invites us to rebel against despair.

German composer Max Bruch’s (1838 – 1920) spirited Scottish Fantasy in E-flat major, Op. 46 is steeped in the sounds of the Highlands, even though Bruch had not yet visited Scotland when he wrote the acclaimed piece. A four-movement tribute to traditional folk melodies, it opens with notes built upon “Through the Wood Laddie.” This tune also appears at the end of the second and fourth movements. The second movement is built around “The Dusty Miller,” the third on “I’m A’ Doun for Lack O’ Johnnie,” and the fourth movement includes a sprightly arrangement of “Hey Tuttie Tatie,” from the patriotic anthem “Scots Wha Hae” (with lyrics by Robert Burns).

In addition to its sold-out season masterworks performances, Maestra Alfonso will be conducting SFSO in an upcoming live performance of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone ™ In Concert on April 5 and 6 and Classical Mystery Tour: A Symphonic Tribute to The Beatles on May 11, both at Broward Center for the Performing Arts (separately ticketed events).

Single tickets for this Masterworks program begin at $36 for Temple Israel of Greater Miami.

The Mavericks 3/15/24

Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing of Arts

Miami, Florida, 33132

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County is pleased to present Miami-founded, genre-bending band, THE MAVERICKS on March 15, 2024 at 8 p.m. as part of the Live at Knight series in the Center’s Knight Concert Hall.

Tickets for THE MAVERICKS range from $45-$90* and may be purchased now online at arshtcenter.org, or at the Adrienne Arsht Center box office by calling (305) 949-6722.

THE MAVERICKS, the eclectic rock and country group known for crisscrossing musical boundaries with abandon, have gone through three distinct phases since their founding in Miami in 1989. An initial period of heady success marked by big hits and critical acclaim in the ’90s. A long hiatus starting in 2003, when the musicians each went their own way. And finally, a triumphant reunion in 2012 that held long enough for the band to recently celebrate its 30th anniversary.

THE MAVERICKS ushered in the fourth phase of its evolution with the No. 1 Billboard debut of their first-ever, all-Spanish album, En Español, released in 2020 on the band’s own Mono Mundo label. Although all 12 tracks are in Spanish, the collection represents a diversity of musical styles and cultural traditions, from tender boleros to brassy mariachi and reimagined Afro-Cuban classics. Seven of the tunes are gems drawn from the vast Latin American songbook, while five are originals written or co-written by the band’s frontman, Raul Malo.

THE MAVERICKS’ infectious live show, which fuses rock, latin, Tex-Mex, norteño and salsa varieties, has earned the group worldwide recognition as “America’s greatest live dance band.” Fronted by Cuban-American vocalist Raul Malo, whose timeless and inimitable voice NPR Music calls “one of the best in the U.S.,” THE MAVERICKS have remained a highly-coveted touring ensemble for over three decades.

Joined by special guest Hector Tellez Jr., whose classic-rock swagger and exotic flair have garnered him a passionate audience in his homeland of Cuba, THE MAVERICKS will be performing hits like “Dance the Night Away,” “All You Ever Do is Bring Me Down,” and “What a Crying Shame.”

MOAD MDC will present Alternative Facts, an interactive public performance by Paul Ramírez Jonas that explores the concept that truth is a social contract. Over the course of two days in two different parts of the city, the artist will engage individual members of the public in a series of actions that call into question commonly understood ideas about facts, authority, exchange, value, and trust.

For Alternative Facts, Ramírez Jonas will set up notary stations in public locations. For several hours each day, he will invite passersby to participate in a simple exchange in which they sit at the table and make an untruthful statement. Through a brief but elaborate process, the artist will notarize each statement as a testament to its truthfulness. The participants are then asked to pay for the service with a gold coin, which is made by the artist electroplating their spare change in a gold solution. The exchange results in two drawings: one for the participant to keep and another to be displayed near the notary station.
