Hear the first-ever Prayer to Bayside, the second Ode to Fort Dallas, and settle, once and for all, via poetry, the debate of which is the better fish spot: Garcia’s or Casablanca?

Tickets will include one free drink ticket. (After that, it’s a cash bar. Yes, there’s a bar on the boat. Why would you ever get on a boat that DIDN’T have a bar?) Light snacks will be provided.

The cruise boards promptly at 7:30 p.m. from Bayside Marina, travels up the Miami River, and re-docks in Bayside at 9:30 p.m.

THE FACTS:

The new TriRail Connection at All Aboard Florida’s MiamiCentral would open just in time for drivers to avoid the looming five-year nightmare on I-95 south of Golden Glades.

Just when you thought getting into Downtown Miami couldn’t get any worse, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) announces the most significant I-95 project in Miami-Dade since the installation of toll express lanes. FDOT plans to replace pavement and make other upgrades between NW 8th and NW 79th streets starting in 2017. The project will take five years, snarling traffic into and out of Downtown Miami until the year 2022.

Join ‘Friends of Tri-Rail Coastal Link’ at https://www.facebook.com/TriRailCoastalLink

South Floridians deserve better – and one solution stands right in front of us: Bring Tri-Rail into Downtown Miami at All Aboard Florida’s new MiamiCentral Station in 2016.

The opportunity for Tri-Rail to provide 26 direct trains per weekday from all points north on the existing Tri-Rail system into Downtown Miami could alleviate this nightmare, and it’s critical to the future development of public transit in Miami-Dade County as well. This is a smart investment in Miami’s transportation and economic future. It would not only realize Tri-Rail service to Downtown Miami, but also integrate All Aboard Florida, Metrorail, MetroMover, the Miami-Dade County bus system and Tri-Rail into an intermodal transit center with connections to all parts of Miami-Dade County, South Florida and even the Orlando/Central Florida area.

This transit hub would further enhance development in Downtown Miami and further assure the viability of other projects like Museum Park, American Airlines Arena, Adrienne Arsht Center, World Center Miami and the World Center Convention Center by bringing millions of new visitors from the Tri-County area to patronize these projects.

This may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to propel our public transit system into the 21stCentury.

Let’s make this connection!

Street Festival Brings The Best of Wynwood to Life!

Wynwood Life is back and packed with everything that Miami loves. The colorful, annual event is all about art, music, fashion and food. This year’s new location will feature more artists, fashion shows, art displays, musical bands, interactive features and a new collaborative cooking showcase that will highlight popular Wynwood restaurants and chefs.

A wide selection of featured artists will be organized by world renowned painter Alexander Mijares, who will also design the festival’s 2015 collective poster. For the first time ever, Mijares will have a pop-up gallery showcasing his unique style of art, which finds inspiration in the colorful energy of both this city and heritage. “It’s unusual to have an artist of his caliber showcasing at a festival. Wynwood Life is a great place to see him in action, and while you’re there, be sure to pick up an original work of art,” said Javi Zayas, co-founder of SWARM, the organizer behind the festival.

The Peroni Style Lounge will once again feature fashionistas at their pop-up boutique, and during the event, it will showcase multiple fashion shows with local boutiques, fashion bloggers and stylists.

It wouldn’t be Wynwood without Food Trucks, so the festival will have the biggest food truck rally ever with over 50 favorites and a number of food vendors ready to please all taste buds. In addition, the event has partnered with Wynwood neighbor, Miami Club Rum. Several bars will be equipped with the hand-crafted rum made in Miami’s first distillery by artisans with a family history of rum production that dates back five generations. Beer lovers rejoice! The Blue Moon Brew Pub will be back with a fully stocked selection of cold brews and mixed drinks. New this year is the Wynwood Culinary Showcase, which will feature top restaurants and chefs from the area showcasing their cuisine. Wynwood Life is sponsored by Miami Club Rum

This year’s musical line-up is bigger and better, featuring many local favorites including Problem Kidz, Spam Allstar, Suenalo, The Tremends, Danger Flow and Elastic Bond to name a few. For a complete schedule of performances, click on Live Music at www.WynwoodLife.com.

Global art agency and gallery, Art Bastion Miami, will be showcasing exclusive paintings from Transiens et Vanitas, the inaugural Miami solo exhibition of Charlie Masson, March 26th through April 18th, 2015. The opening reception will take place on Thursday, March 26th, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The Transiens et Vanitas exhibition consists of 68 works made in a variety of media, including previously unseen assemblages, paintings on panels, as well as paintings on familiar packaging materials.

The artwork highlights vanity and superficiality in online social media and popular culture, and simultaneously serve as reminders of the transience of trends and materials people assign value to. The works pay tribute to influencers that have shaped today’s world.

The transience of life, values and pursuits is the dominant motif throughout the Transiens et Vanitas exhibition. Following tradition stemming from Flemish artists of the 17th century, Masson also incorporates the philosophy of “vanitas” in his works. His works are represented in private collections around the world that include those of HRH Prince of Wales and Baron Cavendish of Furness.

Masson’s first series of paintings titled #vanity (I-V), is in a format that mimics the interface of Instagram and the works are painted in a style that recalls pop-art through usage of bold lines and Ben-Day dots and calls into question the phenomenon of “selfies.”

The series of small oil paintings Avatar (I-IX) are intimate portrayals of the artist’s friends taken from images that they chose as representations of themselves for use in various social media. Painted in a direct manner, Masson injects importance to these modern-day self-appointed miniature online portraits. Accompanying these works, Masson also includes a self-portrait of his reflection on a computer screen, a nod to the intangible virtual life that we each compose.

Opposite the nine paintings of avatars, are nine deceased famous personalities who have left an imprint on today’s world portrayed in “Lament Boxes,” tissue boxes with floral motifs whose openings serve as frames for illuminated ghost-like portraits.

Art Bastion was founded by internationally recognized art collector and curator, Sebastiano Varoli, with the mission of discovering and representing artists around the world and introducing their artwork to broader audiences. Varoli has collaborated with renowned art initiatives ranging from the Musée D’Orsay in Paris to the Royal Ballet in London and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice.

What is a blood moon? A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth passes between the sun and the moon. In a blood moon, the moon is full, and as the sun’s light passes through the earth’s atmosphere, it casts a reddened shadow on the moon. Full lunar eclipses are rare, and blood moons even more so, but neither is unheard of. The next total Lunar Eclipse will occur on April 4th, 2015…

Miami-Dade Reef Guard is a local non-profit charged with protecting the reef by placing mooring buoys for use by the boating public in hopes of reducing anchor damage.

We have an “Adopt-A-Buoy” program and are celebrating our two newest sponsors 1-800 Yacht Charters / 1-800 Bare Boat & The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation

A happy hour with drinks provided by Wicked Dolphin Rum / Mako Vodka and food by Salt Waterfront Restaurant will precede a talk by Reef Guard President, Professor Michael J. Beach, on the wreck of the Half Moon, formerly known as the Germania. This ship has a very interesting and storied past. The site is made more unique by the fact that our sponsor, 1-800 Yacht Charters, has a replica of the vessel within its fleet. Hence the title of the talk “History Comes To Life”!

Suggested donation is $10 and, with it, you are entitled to free food and drinks and entered into a raffle for great door prizes!

The Artisan Lounge is proud to present Toa Castellanos and Alessandra Santos for their duo exhibit entitled Unsuited. This exhibit engages in an exploration of the aspects that come together to define us as a person. It is common that people use their careers as a major defining factor of who they are and their worth. By taking suits, a common symbol of the corporate, and deconstructing them, the work reveals the true nature of that which once was manufactured:

Save the Date and join us April 3rd, 2015 from 6pm-10pm at the Artisan Lounge for our Unsuited exhibit.

Talk About it Tuesday: Testimony from campus police chiefs riles NRA lobbyist

This article is being shared from Naked Politics via the Miami Heeald. Let’s remind ourselves to be vigilant about conversations involving our young people and conversations about violence and lobbying attached to violence and our youth.

http://miamiherald.typepad.com/nakedpolitics/2015/03/testimony-from-campus-police-chiefs-riles-nra-lobbyist.html

After university police chiefs testified against the so-called campus carry bill (HB 4005/SB 176) earlier this week, the National Rifle Association’s Florida lobbyist Marion Hammer sent an alert to NRA members and friends.

“State university campus police are using your tax dollars to lobby against the Second Amendment rights of Florida citizens,” she wrote.

Hammer said two Democratic lawmakers who oppose the bill had asked the chiefs to testify before the Senate Higher Education Committee on Monday and the House Higher Education and Workforce Subcommittee on Wednesday.

“All of these chiefs filled out appearance cards and said, in writing, that they are AGAINST SB 176,” Hammer wrote to her members. “That clearly is lobbying -– they were there to influence the votes of legislators.”

What’s more, she said, the police chiefs were on the clock when they spoke.

Hammer urged NRA members to write House Speaker Steve Crisafulli, R-Merritt Island, and Senate President Andy Gardiner, R-Orlando, to oppose “state funds — your tax dollars — being used to lobby against your constitutional rights.”

But Andy Pelosi, president of the Campaign to Keep Guns off Campus, called the move hypocritical.

“It’s interesting to note that when law enforcement [officers] like sheriffs, for example, testify in opposition to a gun violence prevention bill, that’s okay with the gun lobby,” he said.

Fabio Viviani / Siena Tavern Miami

Last Fall, Chicago’s popular Siena Tavern opened its doors on Miami Beach in the iconic China Grill building. At the helm of the restaurant is the ever-charming Top Chef alum Fabio Viviani, who sat down with Chat Chow TV to talk all about Siena Tavern Miami location and its menu.

Viviani has been working in kitchens since he was 11 years old in his native Italy. By the time he was 28 he was the owner of five different restaurants when he decided to sell them all and come to America. Since then he has opened several successful restaurants throughout the country and has become a well-recognized and well-liked chef.

When Viviani and his partners decided bring the Siena Tavern concept to Miami, the restaurant team partnered up with local vendors like Bar Lab and Wynwood Brewing to help create the bar program. As for the menu, Viviani tells Chat Chow that he enlists his friends, family and co-workers to help narrow down the menu from 300 dishes to 35 “cravers.”

As for what deems a dish as a “craver” he notes, “we like to have the ‘wow’ kind of dishes, because if I can’t get the reaction where you want to come back for more there is some more work to do on it.”

Some of the most popular “cravers” on the menu are the house-made pastas, octopus, pizza and a meatball that’s so beloved it has it’s own Twitter account.

Curious how Viviani feels about taking over the legendary space? Or why dining is different in Miami versus Chicago? Find out those things and more in the video above.

Photographs of Historic Little Farm House on 3/8/15

Historic Little Farm House on Sunday, March 8, 2105.

“Heralded by Miami historians and design enthusiasts alike, (formerly known as The Magic City Farm) is, by any measure, a unique place. Built in the 1920’s, located on a bend of the Little River section of the Miami River on the edge of Little Haiti, is an eclectic one-acre oasis consisting of a 1,200 square foot farm house, two story boathouse and six colorful cottages featuring rustic furnishings – all made out of Dade County pine and rescued from a trailer park down the road.”

“A throw back in time, wildlife freely roam on or about the property, from the manatees that drift by slowly on the river close to the three hundred foot sea wall, to the ducks, chickens and iguanas that can be seen as they wander about on the lush grounds, a large area planted with native and exotic trees. Each of the eight structures on the property is charming in its own way, some painted in cheerful Caribbean colors, others in varying tones of white.  The cabins, some of which have kitchens and bathrooms, and the boathouse, which has both, have been leased for short stays.”

The property (281 N.E. 84 Street, Miami, Florida 33138) has been featured in photo and film shoots and is available for events. For bookings, please contact the new owner, Gabriella von Rosen at info@miamifarmhouse.com.

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – Coral Gables Fashion Week

Coral-Gables-Fashion-Week

Miami’s sense of community is getting stronger by the day – most recently, as evidenced by Coral Gables Fashion Week (or #CGFW for the social media savvy). For the first time in Coral Gables history, fashion retailers in the neighborhood’s downtown have banded together to deliver three days of fashion events and shopping deals that will conclude with a fashion show at the Coral Gables Museum on Saturday night.

The first day was a whirlwind of sweets, drinks, beats, and bloggers. We spent the evening hopping from store to boutique with a mimosa in hand, snapping our favorite products, and taking note of the best deals. Welcome to the fashion spotlight Coral Gables – it looks great on you!

Our first stop was Jae’s Jewelers, a family-owned fine jewelry store that was founded in Miami in 1945. Their drool-worthy inventory offer a lot of variety in terms of prices, brands, and styles. Stop by during Coral Gables Fashion Week and for the remainder of the month to get stunning pieces like the Rebecca rose gold plated bracelet and the Honora pearl bracelet shown below at 50% off. Is this real life?!?!

Jaes-Jewelers-Thank-You-Miami-For-Fashion-Coral-Gables-Fashion-Week-1

Jaes-Jewelers-Thank-You-Miami-For-Fashion-Coral-Gables-Fashion-Week-2

Our second stop was the Peace, Love, World boutique, which happened to be next door. Although we’ve heard a lot about this Miami-based brand, it was our first time in one of their stores. It’s probably for the best because we are obsessed with everything they sell. We walked out with an “i love sundays” iPhone case as a budget-conscious consolation prize. In a perfect world, our entire closet would be filled with the line’s comfy looking sweatsuits.

Our last stop was My Best Friend’s Closet. You’ve heard us talk about how this cute boutique is full of great fashion finds – must be why this year they’re turning four year’s old. We’re happy to report that their inventory is as amazing as ever and that they can still throw a fantastic fiesta. Here’s to many more, guys!

Black Lives Matter protest sparks conversation about on-campus racism

The Black Lives Matter rally held Wednesday has sparked an online conversation about racial issues on campus, involving the University of Miami’s Black student population, opponents of the protestors and even President Donna E. Shalala.

The demonstration included a ‘die-in,’ in which students dropped to the ground in unison to represent lives lost to police brutality, and a march around campus in protest of the grand jury decision not to charge Officer Darren Wilson for the shooting of Michael Brown.

SEE ALSO: Dramatic ‘Black Lives Matter’ demonstration gives voice to voiceless

During and after the event, racist comments were posted on the anonymous social media app Yik Yak and other online outlets. (See screenshots attached in the embedded Tweets below.)

Shalala sent a university-wide Dialogue email Friday in response to comments like these, saying that “all members of the community have the right to respond and share their thoughts and beliefs.”

“Respectful dialogue, even between opposing sides of the same issue, remains an expectation at the University of Miami,” Shalala added.

President Shalala's Dialogue email sent Friday.

Junior Rhyssa Beckford, who was a participant in the Black Lives Matter event, originally reached out to Vice President for Student Affairs Patricia Whitely about the issue Thursday, hoping for a university-wide email to be sent out that would discourage this behavior.

President Shalala then responded to Beckford with her own email, expressing her support of the demonstration and “outrage” at the detractors. (Whitely was out of town.) Beckford posted a screenshot of Shalala’s email on Facebook.

Shalala's response. // Screenshot courtesy Beckford

Soon after the Dialogue email was sent Friday, Beckford expressed her dissatisfaction with the administration’s response on Facebook.

Beckford also wrote that the email was “sugar coated” and “didn’t truly address intolerance” in a Facebook message to The Miami Hurricane.

Some students also posted anonymous reactions to the UMiami Secrets Facebook page, arguing that the protest was an ineffective way to go about asking for change and that “lives matter as a whole, not just black lives.” This also led to discussion online. The comments can be seen in the embedded posts.

While the topic has angered many, sophomore Andrea Vorlicek urged her peers on Facebook not to let the opinions of a few taint their perspectives of the whole.

Vorlicek, who also participated in the march, wrote that the Black population at UM should not focus on the comments on Yik Yak and other social media outlets. Instead, she hopes that her peers work to educate others who are not aware of the prejudices that exist, in order to create a better on-campus environment.

Miguel Rodez’s gives us a glimpse into his fantasy world in his new exhibit “Spring Forward” through a collection of paintings and monotypes that will be on view just in time for the Spring Equinox. Emphasizing the sensuality of flowers is nothing new. Georgia O’Keefe and others have done it in the past. However, Rodez makes an impressive entrance into this genre with flowers that are no ordinary blooms. Using what some have described as magical realism, he creates sexy flowers, endowed with much more than just beauty. These lusty creations manage to be bold without being vulgar. Every nine seconds of each school day, a young person drops out of high school in the U.S., and nearly one-third fail to graduate on time. For the past 26 years, Communities In Schools of Miami (CIS of Miami) has been a driving force in collaborating with Miami-Dade County Public Schools to improve educational outcomes for Miami students.

CIS of Miami’s largest fundraiser is its annual gala, and this year’s event on Saturday, May 2nd, will commemorate CIS of Miami’s 26 years of service. The theme of the 2015 gala is “Over The Rainbow: Where Dreams Come True,” which pays tribute to the successful journeys more than 20,000 students have taken toward their future.

The event takes place in the Chopin Ballroom at the Intercontinental Miami Hotel overlooking downtown Miami’s skyline and Biscayne Bay. The evening starts with a sunset cocktail hour where supporters can bid on luxury, silent auction items including vacation packages, jewelry, restaurant gift certificates, spa treatments and more.

A three-course dinner will follow accompanied by live music and entertainment by CIS of Miami students.

Tickets for the annual philanthropic event are $200 each, and all proceeds directly benefit CIS of Miami. In 2014, CIS’ gala raised more than $100,000 to fund dropout prevention programs including tutoring, mentoring and financial literacy to children in grades k-12.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.cismiami.org or by calling 305-252-5444.

About Communities In Schools of Miami

Through a school-based coordinator, CIS connects students and their families to needed community resources, and provides comprehensive wrap-around services including mentoring, tutoring, life skills development, case management, counseling, job readiness and more. CIS of Miami serves more than 20,000 students each year and is an affiliate of the nation’s leading dropout prevention organization, whose model has been proven to both increase on-time graduation rates and reduce dropout rates. Varekai By Cirque Du Soleil Descends From The Sky And Into The BB&T Center In Sunrise, Florida!

For Fifteen Performances! August 12 – 23, 2015

A dormant volcano, a mystical forest and an ancient prophecy… the adventure of Icarus begins when Varekai, Cirque du Soleil’s latest arena touring production, descends from the sky and into the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida, for fifteen performances – August 12-23, 2015! Ticket prices range from $40 – $100 (subject to change).

Tickets for the general public are now available at www.cirquedusoleil.com/varekai or by calling 1-800-745-3000.
Deep within a forest, at the summit of a volcano, exists an extraordinary world – a world where something else is possible. A world called Varekai.

The story of Varekai begins as Icarus, a solitary young man, falls from the sky and lands in a lush, wonderous world called Varekai.

Parachuted into the shadows of a magical forest – a kaleidoscopic world imbued with fantastical creatures – Icarus takes flight in an adventure both absurd and extraordinary. At the edge of time, in a place of pure and undiluted possibility, begins an inspired incantation to a life rediscovered and to a newly found wonder in the mysteries of the world and the mind.

The word Varekai (pronounced ver•ay•’kie) means “wherever” in the Romany language of the gypsies the universal wanderers. Directed by Dominic Champagne, this production pays tribute to the nomadic soul, to the spirit and art of the circus tradition, and to those who quest with infinite passion along the path that leads to Varekai.

ABOUT THE FILM FESTIVAL

This one-day film festival will explore cinema’s stylish film noir and neo-noir genres in the developing world. Film noir from the 1930s-1950s is characterized by stark, angular shadows; conflicted anti-heroes; chiaroscuro lighting; determined, beautiful, scheming women; obscured scenes; and isolation in modern cities. Neo-noir addresses philosophical questions about the essence of human nature, guilt, redemption, and problems of knowledge, memory and identity, while blurring the lines between right and wrong, good and evil. Two films per genre will be screened to introduce and expose the art of stylized filmmaking and foreign films in Opa-locka.

FREE public event. Viewer discretion is advised as some films may not be suitable for children.

ABOUT THE FILMS & SCREENING TIMES

Directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan.

4:00 PM – Bob the Gambler (“Bob Le Flambeur” – 1956, France) – 98 minutes, drama/thriller, PG

Talk About It Tuesday: American Dreams – Whose Dream?

skislopemall-thumb-560x280

The article below was taken from Miami New Times. What we are requesting that you all consider are the questions of: how does the mall affect our local economy? How does this mall go to benefit our local communities?

American Dreams Miami Mall Will Include World’s Largest Ski Dome, Art Deco Village, Water Park, Coral Reef, and More

Announced yesterday as the largest mall in America, American Dreams Miami is being dubbed by developer Triple Five Group as the “largest entertainment attraction in the world.”

Yes, the mall will end up being much more than a mall.

Triple Five tells New Times plans are expected to include:

1. Planet’s largest ski dome, year-round “powder” in the heat of summer.2. 7-acre covered lake supplying cool water for the country’s largest water park.

3. A separate 7-acre submarine lake where self propelled subs built in the Atlantic explore a live Caribbean reef.

4. An Art Deco Village of gourmet restaurants, live theater, and a Tivoli garden.

5. A London size Ferris wheel with views at the top from the Everglades to the Ocean.

6. Ice stadium for ice ballet, figure skating, and hockey instruction for children and young adults.

mallwaterparkok.jpg
Triple Five
American Dreams Miami will feature a similar water park.

All of this is in addition to the Legoland theme park, minigolf, and sea lion show attraction that were reported yesterday.

Triple Five says the mall will “capture the very best elements” of its other properties. Those include the continent’s largest mall, the West Edmonton Mall in Alberta, Canada; the Mall of America in Minnesota; and the under-construction American Dreams Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey, near the stadium where the New York Jets and Giants play.

The mall is planned to be built near the intersection of Florida’s Turnpike and I-75 in Northwest Miami-Dade. The project will be within the Urban Development Line, and no county money will be used to build the mall.

Kick off O, Miami Poetry Festival and National Poetry Month with the smoothest event April: a lyrical boat cruise up the Miami River.

Co-created and -produced with O, Miami , Miami River Poetry Cruise is a journey into the Heart of Dade-ness, guided by locals, protected by pythons, and serenaded by some of Miami’s best poets in a round-robin, “tour-guide” format invented just for this occasion. Hear the first-ever Prayer to Bayside, the second Ode to Fort Dallas, and settle, once and for all, via poetry, the debate of which is the better fish spot: Garcia’s or Casablanca?

Tickets will include free beer provided by Biscayne Bay Brewing. (After that, it’s a cash bar. Yes, there’s a bar on the boat. Why would you ever get on a boat that DIDN’T have a bar?) Light snacks will be provided.

The cruise boards promptly at 6:30 p.m. from Bayside Marina, travels up the Miami River, and re-docks in Bayside at 8:30 p.m.

Your ticket also gets you a free drink at the Official Afterparty at The Intercontinental Hotel.

Photographs of Maxine’s Closet at McCormick Place on 3/12/15

Maxine’s Closet at McCormick Place on Thursday, March 12, 2015. I had such a wonderful time with all of the amazing clothes, great food and wine. I bought a beautiful jacket, belt and shoes.

“Maxine’s Closet is a fundraiser in memory of Maxine Thurston-Fischer, PhD, who was a trailblazer and activist in the social work field. Maxine was also a serious fashionista. In keeping with Maxine’s efforts on behalf of marginalized children and youth, Maxine’s Closet will generate awareness of and support for Florida Foster Care Review (FFCR) through fashion and design. The event will feature the sale or silent auction of more than 100 items donated by Maxine, including designer clothing, jewelry and glasses, either new or gently used. The evening will include cocktails, lite bites, music and, of course, fashion.”

“All proceeds from the sale of items at Maxine’s Closet will be donated to FFCR and will be used to further the organization’s work. In keeping with FFCR’s mission and with Maxine’s tradition of giving back, guests were encouraged to bring new or gently used handbags or shoes, for Dress for Success.”

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – How To Rocksbox Miami Style

Thank-You-Miami-For-Fashion-Rocksbox-Miami-Style-Title

Miami people are usually “bling” people – not us. Don’t get us wrong. We loooove shiny things, but our jewelry rights were revoked early in life after we lost every nice piece of jewelry we had before the age of 18. Since then, we’ve kept only a minimal collection of versatile jewelry, allowing us the flexibility to accessorize properly and making it easy to keep track of each and every piece.

When Rocksbox, a monthly jewelry subscription, first asked us to give them a try, we were initially hesitant. After all, our style in adulthood has been defined by the consistency of our accessories. Are we really ready to diversify and let a stylist take the reigns? And, as serial jewelry mislayers, can we handle the responsibility of designer jewelry on loan? Photographs of The Record Man World Premiere at the Miami Dade College’s Miami International Film Festival on 3/10/15

The Record Man World Premiere at the Miami Dade College’s Miami International Film Festival on Tuesday, March 10, 2015.

Before there was a music business there was Henry Stone, who shaped and catapulted the sound of 1970s Miami into the mainstream with his unique hit-breaking label TK Records and affiliates. Stone started out in the music distribution business which led him to establish his own independent music label which he ran from a warehouse in Hialeah.

TK Record’s first big international hit was George McCrae’s Rock Your Baby in 1974, one of the songs credited to starting the disco revolution. The hits kept coming and by the end of the 1970s the label had several #1 songs in the Billboard Top 100 chart like Get Down Tonight and That’s The Way (I Like It) by KC and the Sunshine Band and Anita Ward’s Ring My Bell. Not long after the disco era was over TK Records went bankrupt, but Stone still had one last piece to add to the Miami music sound puzzle when he helped release what would become the first million seller freestyle hit record Fascinated by Company B and the rest is legit Miami music history.– Andres Castillo

Former Museum fellow Wendy Lower challenges the traditional picture of Germany’s women holding down the home front. In her compelling book, “Hitler’s Furies: German Women in the Nazi Killing Fields,” she reveals new evidence that places them directly in the maelstrom of war: looting, plundering and even killing.

Learn about a generation of women swept up in the feverish nationalism of the Nazi party, many of whom traveled east with the expanding “frontier” –where they witnessed and participated in exploitation, persecution and murder.

Public Art Wednesday: Applications for PULSE

PULSE-Miami-Beach-2015-652x292

What is PULSE?

PULSE Miami Beach returns to Indian Beach Park, 4601 Collins Avenue, with new dates, from Tuesday, December 1 to Saturday, December 5. For more information including hours, directions and to purchase tickets, please see our Visitors page.

Since 2005, PULSE Contemporary Art Fair has been the premiere satellite fair for the discovery and acquisition of cutting-edge contemporary art. With annual editions in Miami Beach and New York City, the fair cultivates a supportive environment for its international community of galleries and provides a platform for their growth and expansion in the contemporary art market. From its inception, PULSE has presented thoughtfully-curated exhibitions and ever-evolving programming that reflect the fair’s commitment to making the visitor experience a dynamic one.

PULSE MIAMI BEACH 2015 APPLICATION
Tuesday, December 1 – Saturday, December 5, 2015

PULSE Contemporary Art Fair is pleased to announce new dates for its Miami Beach fair, which returns to Indian Beach Park at 46th Street and Collins Avenue. PULSE Miami Beach will be open from Tuesday, December 1st through Saturday, December 5th, 2015, beginning the week with its signature Private Preview Brunch on Tuesday from 1pm-4pm, followed by an Opening Celebration with special programming from 4pm-7pm, and ending with a Closing Celebration on Saturday, December 5th, from 5pm-7pm.

“After speaking with a number of collectors, many of whom now to travel to Miami earlier in the week, and consulting with our core community of exhibitors, it was clear we needed to change our dates,” states Director Helen Toomer. “We look forward to offering our visitors additional time to discover great artworks at PULSE Miami Beach and also provide a chance for our exhibitors to enjoy all that Miami has to offer, with a day off on Sunday.”

In response to PULSE’s success at its new home on Indian Beach Park, the fair is expanding its footprint to over 50,000 square feet of beachside exhibition space, spanning two tents and hosting over 80 local and international exhibitors. Each tent will embody a distinct style – the main structure will house both PULSEand IMPULSE exhibitors, juxtaposing curated group shows by PULSE galleries next to solo artist presentations by IMPULSE galleries, the latter of whose artists will be nominated for the PULSE Prize. In a space adjacent to this, POINTS exhibitors will be showcased within the new POINTS Pavilion. This will provide a smaller and more affordable platform for alternative models, non-profits, first time exhibitors and galleries who wish to present a project, which they have not yet been able to realize within their gallery space. Core and memorable programming will return to PULSE Miami Beach, including PROJECTS, PERSPECTIVES and PLAY, which will be integrated throughout the fair.

After a full day of commencement festivities on Tuesday December 1st, PULSE Miami Beach will be open to the public from 10am-7pm daily from Wednesday, December 2nd through Saturday, December 5th, 2015, ending with a Closing Celebration on Saturday, December 5th, from 5pm-7pm.

PULSE, IMPULSE, POINTS: WHICH EXHIBITOR ARE YOU?

PULSE Contemporary Art Fair is comprised of three types of exhibitors, PULSE, IMPULSE and POINTS. PULSE and IMPULSE exhibitors are integrated throughout one tent and POINTS exhibitors will inhabit a new connected space – the POINTS Pavilion. The majority of the fair is made up of PULSE exhibitors, who are local and international, emerging and established galleries. IMPULSE exhibitors each exhibit a solo artist presentation within their booth. Each of these artists will be nominated for the PULSE Prize, a cash grant awarded directly to the artist and each nominee will receive extensive coverage in the lead up to, and at the fair. Booths within the adjacent POINTS Pavilion provide a smaller and more affordable platform for alternative models, non profits, first time exhibitors and galleries who wish to present a project which they have not yet been able to realize within their gallery space.
