Elsten Torres is a singer/songwriter/producer who came to New York from Havana as a child. He was lead singer and songwriter for the American Latin Rock band, “Fulano de Tal.” After the breakup of the band, Elsten has continued both his own career as a solo artist and has had success writing for other well-known performers such as Ricky Martin, Luis Fonsi, Obie Bermúdez, Alejandra Guzmán, Julio Iglesias, Aleks Syntek, Oscar de Leon, Marshall Crenshaw, John Rich, and many others. He has been nominated for two Grammy Awards, the second for his first solo independent album, “Individual.” He has won several BMI music awards for his songwriting and is on the board of governors for NARAS. Currently living in Miami, Elsten works with charity organizations such as “Hope” (Miami Beach Homeless) and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. “Tal Cohen is among the best of a very few young inspired pianists I’ve encountered in my travels… Tal’s playing is full of passion, focus and creativity”- Joe Lovano

Israeli-born and Australian-reared Tal Cohen’s unique piano style owes its roots to the Jewish folk songs and classical music he played in his formative years growing up in Israel.

Tal was chosen as one of 10 semi-finalists in the Wangaratta Jazz Festival’s 2013 piano competition, Australia’s most renowned and fierce jazz competition.

Grammy-winning saxophonist Terence Blanchard invited him to perform with his Quintet at the 2014 New Orleans Jazz Festival. Later that year, Cohen appeared at the 2014 Perth Jazz Festival alongside acclaimed New York saxophonist Greg Osby.

Cohen was named the Grand Prize Winner of the Barry Harris National Jazz Piano Competition, gaining an opportunity to perform his music at the Main Stage in the 2014 Detroit Jazz Festival accompanied by bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Nate Winn.

After a final performance at the Sydney Opera House, Cohen was named the winner of the exclusive Australian Freedman Fellowship Award.

Now based in the US, he has become a regular performer with iconic jazz figures such as Terence Blanchard, Greg Osby and Robert Hurst and continues to tour the world performing his unique brand of improvised music.

Saturday, January 6 in the Gleason Room Backstage at the Fillmore, 7 PM – Power Access, Inc. presents the South Beach Jazz Festival, tonight starring Ignacio Berroa, recognized as one of the greatest drummers of our times. As an author and a renowned educator Ignacio made his mark with the instructional video: Mastering the Art of Afro–Cuban Drumming as well as the books: Groovin’ in Clave and A New Way of Groovin’. He also conducts clinics and master classes around the world. He will present this project from 7 to 8 PM

From 8 to 9:30 PM he and his trio will perform “Straight Ahead from Havana,” his most recent CD release. Ignacio was honored to be included in the 2011 Mp3 compilation entitled “Jazz Drumming Legends,” which features some of the most renowned drummers in Jazz history. In New York City he was introduced to Dizzy Gillespie, who invited Ignacio to join his quartet. Subsequently, Ignacio took part of all the important bands Gillespie assembled during that decade such as: The Dizzy Gillespie 70th Anniversary Big Band, The Dizzy Gillespie All Stars Big Band and the Grammy Award winner, United Nation Orchestra. This relation lasted until Dizzy’s death. Gillespie best defined Ignacio as: “… the only Latin drummer in the world in the history of American music that intimately knows both worlds: his native Afro Cuban music as well as Jazz…” At once a veteran and a pioneer, he has been applauded through the years for his facility in combining folkloric rhythms with contemporary jazz and funk.

Besides Dizzy, Ignacio has recorded and played with musicians of the stature of: McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard, Clark Terry, Lou Donaldson, Jackie McLean, Jimmy Heath, to name a few. Ignacio has recorded three albums as a leader. “Codes” (nominated for a Grammy in 2007 and won a Danish Music Award in 2007 as best International Jazz Album.) “Heritage and Passion”, released in 2014. Featured tonight with Ignacio are Martin Bejerano on piano and Josh Allen on bass.

South Florida-based corporate events + interior design firm Equilibrium Group made huge splash over Art Basel where they hosted their designed VIP lounge at the annual Haute Living dinner at PAMM (Perez Art Museum) in Downtown Miami.

It was celeb central in the branded Equilibrium Lounge with Ricky Martin, the magazine’s December cover boy holding court in the sumptuous space. Ricky loved the aesthetic sensibilities that Equilibrium ringleaders Marc Silverstone and Voytek Faber incorporated. Other notable guests at the diner included: Jetsmarter CEO Sergey Petrossov, PAMM director Franklin Sirmans, managing director of Hublot America Jean-Francois Sberro and many more.

Also during the week, Equilibrium installed branded spaces at the Alec Monopoly unveiling at the Fontainebleau and the Destination Bas3l Art + Sushi mixer at the Plymouth Hotel with the noted aviation company JetSmarter.

The Bazaar by José Andrés, a critically acclaimed restaurant, will host a Casino Royale soiree to celebrate New Year’s Eve. Chef De Cuisine Tito Vargas and his culinary team will serve an extravagant dining experience that includes modern and traditional tapas with Latin American and Asian influences. Cocktails with fresh fruits and organic emulsifiers will be enjoyed to elevate classic recipes. The wine list will include new and old world producers with unique varietals. A 29-year-old Master’s graduate of the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, Kemuel Roig has already come out with two CDs (“Acustico 2”, with Ben-Hur Berroa, and “Let There Be Joy!” with his quintet) and a single “The X-Generation.” He has appeared on 21 CD’s as sideman to musicians like Arturo Sandoval, Ed Calle, Ben-Hur Berroa, Ricardo Rodriguez, Felipe Lamoglia, Hilario Bell, Pablo Diaz, and Yorgis Goiricelaya, and vocalists Olga Thomas, Leslie Cartaya, Aymee Nuviola, and Ana Cartañá. He has performed with At the age of 18 he was invited with the MDC Hard Bop Ensemble to be part of the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy. The next year, with the same group, Kemuel won a DownBeat Magazine Annual Student Competition under two categories, outstanding composition and piano solo. He has performed on stage with all these plus Giovanni Hidalgo, Chris Dingman, Issac Delgado, Amaury Gutierrez, Malena Burke, Marcos Vidal, Agustin Barreto, Rene Gonzales, Linda Briceno, and Marcos Yaroide, among others. Sunday December 24: Live on Lincoln presents the Chloe Dolandis Jazz Ensemble. A young voice with an old soul, dynamic entertainer Chloe Dolandis moves audiences with her powerful vocals and commanding stage presence. Appealing to a wide range of audiences, she is equally at home performing her original music and innovative covers at intimate venues and outdoor music festivals, as she is singing the American Songbook with large symphonic orchestras.

As a songwriter, Chloe is also quite versatile. Her debut album, Bring Back The Fever, is a uniquely stylistic blend of jazz, pop, and soul, while her EP, There’s More, offers a more intimate side of her voiceand songwriting abilities. Chloe’s country song, “One Man’s White Trash (Is Another Man’s Treasure),” was a finalist in the prestigious NSAI Song Contest Presented by CMT, and her pop/soul song, “Solid Woman” was a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition’s Performance Category.

Beach Polo World Cup, the world’s largest Beach Polo tournament, is making its official return to the sands of South Beach. From January 5th to 7th, polo enthusiasts will gather on the sands of the W South Beach to witness the resurgence of the world class polo extravaganza.

The weekend will be filled with three amazing days of polo matches that will commence on Friday, Jan. 5th. Some of the world’s top players will be competing including Nic Roldan, Ricardo Mansur, Melissa Ganzi, Juan Bollini and more. The tournament will also host a women’s cup on Saturday, along with a charity match on Sunday supporting Beach Polo’s official charity partner, The Bass Museum.

On Saturday, December 9, Venice-based arts incubator In Heroes We Trust held an art exhibition for In Heroes We Trust: Street Artists And Their Heroes + rare book talk and signing at WeWork’s coworking space, South of Fifth, in Miami Beach with noted graffiti artists Ron English, Risk, The London Police and Seen with JC Coccoli moderating and In Heroes We Trust founder and author Neely Shearer participating.

The warmly-lit space provided the ideal backdrop for the talk with contemporary, eye-catching artworks displayed throughout the fifth floor from about a dozen or so artists such as: Annie Terrazzo, Homo Riot, Bobbie Moline Kramer, Le Fou, Kevin Glazer, Daniel Dugan, Tania Love Abramson, Zac Tomaszewski, Sarah Elise Abramson, Mads Hofmann, Daas and Peter Birk.

Guests sipped on drinks by Rosé Piscine while listening to the intriguing talk on street art and their thought process in creating their works. The Miami Big Sound Orchestra is downtown Miami’s resident Latin Jazz big band since 2006, a project formed as a collaboration of musicians from Miami’s jazz and Latin music communities. The band combines 21st-century big band jazz with Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music, funk, and soul.

Hailing from all over the western hemisphere, the members of the MBSO are all veteran Miami musicians who have performed and toured with artists such as Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan, Issac Delgado, Jon Secada, Chayanne, Rey Ruiz, Tito Nieves, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, Chaka Khan, and the Funk Brothers, to name a few.

The band’s repertoire, inspired by the music of Issac Delgado, Ray Barretto, Machito, Willy Rosario, Paquito D’Rivera, Irakere, and Tito Puente, includes original compositions by Rafael “Cali” Valencia (legendary Miami bassist/composer), Chino Nunez (Grammy-Award winning producer), and Jaui Schneider (former pianist/composer for Ray Barretto), as well as classics from legends such as the great Mario Bauza.

Their leader, Peter Francis, is based at NWSA and Miami-Dade Wolfson campus.

Presented by Faena Art, Phillip K. Smith III’s piece defines a reflective space within the beach environment, composed entirely of two most prominent elements: water and sky. Formed by 300 geometric reflectors angled at 110 degrees, the artwork directly engages with the ocean surrounding and the endless heavens. As the light shifts and the viewer moves through the installation, land, water and sky are separated, merged, and displaced, subverting one’s assumed relationship with the horizon. It is a constantly changing installation that can never be seen the same way twice.

Born in Los Angeles in 1972, Phillip K. Smith III received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design before returning to the Southern California desert where he was raised. Building upon explorations in the perception of light, color and space, he creates intensely physical and seemingly ephemeral sculptures.

An autonomous flying swarm of 300 drones, Franchise Freedom, supported by Faena Art, exposes the tension between individual freedom and safety by numbers. The sacrifice made by the individual subjecting to the group gives off the illusion of freedom, creating a never ending cycle. It is the first time that a natural phenomenon will be imitated by machines working with decentralised algorithms at this scale.

The Miami Beach Jewelry & Watch Show, one of the City’s most anticipated events devoted to jewelry, has announced its new name and new location at Indian Beach Park. Produced by the Palm Beach Show Group, experienced show producers with an expertise in bringing together the best group of exhibitors from around the world, the event will build upon the strength of last year’s successful debut show.

Accurately highlighting the prominent focus of jewelry on offer at the show, the event will return as the Miami Beach Jewelry & Watch Show, February 1-4, 2018 to Indian Beach Park, 4601 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33140.

The Miami Beach Jewelry & Watch Show is set to provide an extraordinary showcase in Miami Beach for leading jewelry and watch dealers from around the world. With over 40,000 square feet of exhibition space, more than 120 dealer booths will flow throughout the Indian Beach Park Pavilion’s expansive setting, creating a show of spectacular breadth, depth and scope, allowing exhibitors and collectors to meet under one roof in a specalized venue on the Beach– all in one place, all at one time.

The Miami Beach Show will take place at the same great location as the renown PULSE Miami Beach Art Fair during Art Basel. The exceptional new pavilion is located directly on the beach next to the Eden Roc Hotel and just north of the Fontainebleau situated in the heart of Millionaires Row on Collins Avenue.

Española Way is revving up for its monthly event, Noche de Coche (Night of Cars). In Spanish, “coche” translates to cars, but it also means stroller. For Española Way’s Noche de Coche, this pedestrian-only street is inviting families to visit with their children and for one night each month parade down the street with wagons, tricycles, scooters and strollers. Miami Beach’s own Jacober Creative, an award-winning design and marketing studio, invites the public to a FREE opening night reception and art exhibition, IRL (In Reel Life): From Celluloid to Cellular, Recasting the Classics Through Graphic Design, at the Miami Beach Cinematheque. With favorite films from the 1940s through the 1990s to serve as the agency’s inspiration, Jacober Creative placed their graphic design spin on American film culture, as filtered through the lens of the usually disposable medium of Instagram, recast onto everyday “objects of desire.” On display at the Cinematheque will be a unique range of 3-D showcases for the graphic designs, such as Bkr water bottles with Carrie inspired graphics, Vans sneakers with a design that is a tribute to The Birds, and a lunch box with a Breakfast at Tiffany’s-style graphic.

IRL (In Reel Life) will open with a reception from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 5. The exhibit will run through December 31, and is free and open to the public. On October 21st the New World Symphony will present Project 305, a WALLCAST concert unveiling the crowd-sourced symphony of Miami’s unique sights and sounds. The project was launched back in January in partnership with MIT Media Lab and The Knight Foundation.

Over 1,000 submissions from Miami locals were blended together to create the final work by Ted Hearne, Jonathan David Kane and Michael Tilson Thomas titled Miami in Movements representing our city’s astounding range of cultural influences. Before the concert, guests will have the opportunity to engage in activities including backstage tours of the world-renowned Frank Gehry-designed New World Center, a 360-degree virtual reality experience of Miami’s most beloved neighborhoods and numerous pre-performance concerts. The WALLCAST will also be streamed on Facebook Live, so that those unable to attend can still tune-in for the excitement. This unifying community event is free and open to all ages.

Faena Theater proudly presents Sensatia, an interactive multimedia performance fusing movement, sound and technology to stimulate and stir the senses. In collaboration with Quixotic, an experimental global performance group recently branded an “innovative circus ensemble” by New York Times, Sensatia tells the tale of two uninspired artists – a mechanical ballerina and overworked violinist – who stumble upon the sumptuous backstage of a fantasy cabaret. Following a tempting muse, the artists and their passions are awakened through a journey of sensual discovery.

Merging film, live music, projection mapping, perfumery and culinary arts developed in collaboration with celebrated chef Paul Qui, Sensatia will sweep you away with a truly unique multi-sensory experience.

Faena Theater will open Sensatia to the community with seating on a first come, first serve basis on October 12 and 13 provided a minimum $15 donation. All proceeds will go towards hurricane relief efforts led by Feeding South Florida. Starting October 14, Faena Miami Beach will donate $5 from every ticket sale of Sensatia to Feeding South Florida in the name of hurricane relief.

Join us at The Living Room on Saturday, October 28th for a celebration of all things weird and wonderful at The Faena Horror Picture Show hosted by legendary Miami drag queen, Adora. Inspired by the ‘70s cult classic, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” this all-night festivity transforms Faena’s intimate space into Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s famous castle, featuring a selection of artfully-crafted themed Bacardi cocktails and live music from Blues, Soul and Rock & Roll group, Brothers of Other.

Light up the dance floor with your best Time Warp steps and get into the spirit of your favorite characters with their iconic costumes, from Rocky’s gold lame and Columbia’s sparkly ensemble to Brad and Janet’s scandalous skivvies.

Miami New Drama reimagines Thornton Wilder’s iconic American play for multicultural Miami audiences. The classic story centers on the everyday lives of two families, the Webbs and the Gibbs, in a fictional small town, Grover’s Corners. In this world premiere multilingual production directed by Michel Hausmann, the Webbs speak Spanish at home, and the Gibbs speak Creole while in town they all speak English — reminiscent of today’s America. The translations, by Pulitzer Prize winning Cuban-American Nilo Cruz and critically acclaimed Haitian-American Jeff Augustin, mark the first time the Thornton Wilder Estate has allowed the text of Our Town to be altered.
