Stache Opens in Ft. Lauderdale with a Visit from the Ardbeg Rocket

Saturday evening marked the opening of Stache, a bar in Ft. Lauderdale with a 1920’s speakeasy theme. The grand opening featured a visit from the Ardbeg Rocket, currently touring to celebrate the launch of some of its Scotch into space back in 2011. We were given the opportunity to sample four different Ardbeg Scotches as well as a few cocktails. The brand’s Consumer Development Manager Trisha Cancilla also made a presentation about the different products.

The bar was full of models dressed like astronauts in addition to all the employees in their 1920’s attire. I got to put on goggles and get a space gun for a studio portrait, too. In the end, my favorite Scotches were the Ardbeg Galileo, finished in Marsala casks, and Ardbeg Uigeadail, finished in Sherry casks.

The bar was beautiful. Two floors with great decorations. Very roomy and comfortable with a big back yard as well. Live music played. Great theme. Bar Stache is located at 109 SW 2nd Avenue, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33312, just south of Broward Blvd. If you go soon, you may see that the sign hasn’t been updated yet and still reflects the former tenant, Himmie Health Club. That’s the right place though!

The most romantic place to bike in South Florida

Brian and Naomi at the Sea Ranch Center
A little romance at the Sea Ranch Shopping Strip in Sea Ranch Lakes along our bicycle adventure on A1A.

This past Sunday night, my fiancé, Naomi and I embarked on a 65 mile bicycle journey along A1A from Parkland to Coral Gables. The propose of the trip: to see if we could do it.

I will preface this by saying that I’ve made October my personal “No Car, No Facebook Month”, also to see if I could do it (more on this in a future post). Naomi was gracious enough to go along with my scheme to bike the entire east coast of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. We live in the middle of suburban Coral Gables, and regularly bicycle commute as far as Little Haiti, Wynwood, Downtown and Miami Beach, but by no means, had we been training for a long distance ride like this one.

The exhibit opening Saturday October 19, 2013 at 1310 Gallery Sailboat Bend Artist Lofts reflects on the work of daughter and mother. The exhibit, “Tracing the Imaginary” focuses on the artwork of daughter and mother. Both women share a similar trajectory starting their carrier as a raw artist. Sonia Baez-Hernandez after a decade of working in art and sociology got a MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Francisca Hernandez began doing ceramic after retired. In 1998 Hernandez began to develop her drawings and mastering skill.

Hernandez’s drawings transport the audience to imaginary gardens, symbolism, and fragmentation of multiple spaces. In contrast, Baez-Hernandez experiments with a realm of micros organic or anthropomorphic forms that emerge as part of a dialogue between surrealistic overtones, and gestural marking. The exhibition includes two-dimensional pieces, installation art, found –object assemblages, and a performance by Baez-Hernandez. Some of their artworks transform the pitch of illness into artistic expressions and emanate therapeutic value.

Riff Rockit, one of the most popular performers in the growing musical genre “kindie rock” is coming to South Florida for a special concert to benefit the Love Jen Cancer Fund of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation. The high energy performance will take place at Revolution LIVE in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, September 29 at 3 p.m.

Evan Michael, a.k.a. Riff Rockit, headlines the band which entertains kids and their parents with inspiring songs and positive messages. Born and raised in Fort Lauderdale to musical parents, the singer-songwriter’s love of music began at an early age. Evan was clapping to the beat on his first birthday and by age 10 was jamming on a six-string guitar. At age 15 he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and underwent intensive chemo treatments at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. His cancer went into remission. Two years later he relapsed and required a life-saving bone marrow transplant. Music was Evan’s way of coping during this dark and difficult time.

“Fiber Optics” is a comprehensive group exhibition of 40 emerging artists that exemplify fresh, innovative approaches to “fiber art.” These artists have reinvented traditional craft processes such as embroidery, crochet, knitting, weaving, sewing, and quilting. Rather than follow prescribed methods, they merge traditional craft with sculpture, installation, and video art; and utilize unexpected materials that transcend their banal origins with integral symbolism. Though the approaches are unconventional, technique, precision, and aesthetic appeal are still at the core of their processes.

Funding for this event is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council and Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau.

29 artists were selected through a part juried, part invitational process. The artists are linked by their fresh approaches to the ROUGH & TUMBLE theme: “characterized by violent, random, disorderly action and struggles, unrestrained, marked by bursts of destructive force or intense activity,” and “an unorganized collection or mixture of various things, described as Raw, Textured, Volatile, and/or Arbitrary, Hybrid forms.”

The exhibition is housed within “The Projects North,” in FAT Village ARTS District, the leading exhibition space for monthly art walks in Fort Lauderdale. There will be two public receptions, on Aug. 31 & Sept. 28, as part of the monthly (4th Saturday) art walk in FAT Village, which spans 4 square blocks and is populated with artist’s studios, galleries & other creative businesses. J’ouvert (pronounced “Jou-vay”) is derived from French patois and means ‘daybreak’. Jouvert marks the official start of carnival celebrations. The first revelers hit the streets – jumping, dancing, shouting – abetted, it must be admitted, by the fine local rum, but fueled more by the exhilaration of the occasion. Most revelers usually join sections in which hundreds of people party together with the vibrant sounds of the so-called “engine room” which is comprised of a “core” set of instruments, including the brake iron (discarded car brake drums), shak-shak (shaker), scratcher (a metal guiro), toc-toc (claves), cowbell, and bottle and spoon, drum set, congas, and occasional other instruments as part of the engine room. The brake iron is played with a metal rod to produce a high-pitched sound.

Enter the Miami Rhythm Section in collaboration with the China Mas Group. We are one of a number of Caribbean Carnival Mas bands participating in the Miami-Broward 2013 Jouvert infusion into the cultural consciousness of the South Florida Caribbean Diaspora. Part and parcel of Jouvert is rhythm and steel–The miami Rhythm section represents the so called “engine room” referenced above.

UC|CU Sponsors Free Community Workshops In Dade and Broward On Immigration Basics For Same-Sex Couples

As a result of the Supreme Courts overturning of DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) which defined marriage being only between a man and a woman, president Obama has directed each Department Secretary and agency head to review all federal regulations in order to determine what benefits will affect, or “attach” to couples in marriage equality states vs. the non-marriage equality states. Some federal benefits attach according to state law. These issues, and many more on marriage, immigration rights and how they affect you, will be discussed in FREE COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS by our panel of Immigration, Law & Psychotherapy Experts in both Dade & Broward counties.

Unity Coalition|Coalicion Unida is the First & Only organization for the South Florida Latino|Hispanic|LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning) Community – advancing Equality since 2002.

Parallels Art Show

Presented by Niki Art Studio and 1310 Gallery

Gala Opening Reception, July 20th 7pm to 11pm

Look at the world we live in. Our simultaneous existence as a generation binds us together, yet we each diverge on different paths. Our journeys are unique and diverse, yet we co-exist… close in proximity, yet distant, living and transitioning, breathing and traveling together as an expression of the collective self.

The 20 new and emerging artists exhibiting in PARALLELS visualize how they are part of a generation that is free to roam and find one’s own particular destination of infinite possibilities. The artists work makes you pause and observe the beauty in the contrasts that connects and divides us as a community truly unified not only by our similarities yet by our divine right and responsibility to create and evolve differently as individuals. Not seen on the operatic stage for nearly a decade, Mourning Becomes Electra is the hot ticket of the season. Sung in English with projected translations in English and Spanish.

Making their debuts in the lead role are sopranos Eglise Gutiérrez and Angela Mortellaro. Sung in French with projected translations in English and Spanish.

Sonia Delaunay was a Jewish-French artist who, with her husband Robert Delaunay and others, cofounded the Orphism art movement. It is noted for its use of strong colors and geometric shapes. Her work extends to painting, textile design and stage set design. Sonia was the first living female artist to have a retrospective exhibition at the Louvre in 1964. By 1975 she was named an officer of the French Legion of Honor. Her work in modern design included the concepts of geometric abstraction, the integration of furniture, fabrics, wall coverings, and clothing.
Professor M. Kathleen Colussy, M.F.A. has traveled to seventy-one countries on five continents where she has researched and photographed numerous cultures. Colussy’s gift for fashion, textile print design and photography, helped her create a new fine art series of handmade books. This skill contends with the dueling realities of the slick gloss travel brochures along with the sometimes-gritty reality of the indigenous people living and/or working in a given country.

Portrait of an American innocent. In 1955, Bettie Page (1923-2008) waits to testify before a Senate subcommittee investigating the effects of pornographic material on American adolescents and juveniles. In flashbacks, we see her childhood in Tennessee, a brief marriage, a gang rape, and her going to New York City in 1949. There she takes acting lessons, models for photos, and acts in short films for adults, earning the nickname, “The Pin-Up Queen of the Universe.” We see her relationship with merchants Irving and Paula Klaw, photographers John Willie and Bunny Yeager, boyfriends, and the public. Through it all, she is wholesome, sporting, and forthright – Eve before the fall.

“Human beings have mastered the art of self sabotage now it’s time for us to master the art of self-love”, says co-curator Dana DellaCamera. Imagine a world where you are lit up with excitement because of the miracles you are creating for yourself. Where you allow yourself to dream, trust, develop, risk, expand, take action and create without limitations! When we listen to our hearts and trust our inner selves we experience a burst of energy and discover our true purpose. That is the concept and focus of the show. “On Cloud 9” is an inspirational and innovative journey through art where the soul is realized and takes flight. The show will leave you elevated. Come evolve with us and let your spirit soar!
There will be several featured artists on each of the 3 gallery floor levels. On the first floor, up and coming industrial design innovator, Jeff Olivier will be revealing his newest works. Jeff will be showcasing radical designs that break design rules regarding materials and production. Items will be made by wood, metal, glass, plastic, fiberglass, recycled materials, concrete, and cork. Jeff possesses a minimal, modern, and sleek style with an interesting use of unique materials.
The second floor will feature a variety of artists including Diego Romero, Melisa Caprio, Omnia Masoud, Anne DellaCamera, Eliane Harvey and many more. Through her own desires being fulfilled she wanted to inspire others to do the same and capture the experience through her art. People from all over the world write their Affirmations on postcards and mail them to her. She then photographs the cards in nature and compiles them to give people the opportunity to see their Affirmation in a published book, Postcards to the UniverseTM. A portion of the proceeds from the book are used to benefit different organizations around the world. At the gallery opening there will be an interactive activity for guests to write their own manifestations and be part of the magic and art.

When they weren’t performing with B.B. King or Reverend Horton Heat, Joel DaSilva and the Midnight Howl toured the country as the opening act for The White Stripes and Black Crowes. Locals can enjoy the soulful quartet live on stage at Rip’s Sports Bar & Grill, located at Diamond Strike Lanes, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday, May 17th.

Diamond Strike prides itself on its billing as a live music venue as much as a bowling and entertainment center. Diamond Strike’s Debbie Feder, has secured international artists such as Danny Nova (returning May 29th), Ralph Curtis, Vince Rayburn and Shawn Beamer (Molly Hatchet Band) as well as up-and-coming independent artists to take the “diamond” stage.

“Diamond Strike Lanes offers events seven nights a week and we have created a strong following with live music enthusiasts who come here to watch their favorite bands play,” explains Feder. “We are helping put Pompano Beach on the radar as a local tour stop for musicians.”

The best part: Rip’s weekly concerts are free of charge, open to the public and can be enjoyed over dinner.

“New Beginnings” by Wendy White, a Play by the Children, for the Children premieres at ArtServe on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 8:00 p.m.

New Light Theatre is proud to present “New Beginnings”, an original play written and developed by the children residing at the Shepherds Way/HOPE South Florida homeless shelter. The children will showcase their acting and singing talents, as they remind the audience that art transcends any circumstance.

“New Beginnings” will be performed by the children and will be accompanied by the New Light Players – Jessica Pusceddu, Gema Calero and Gabriel Villasmil. Original art by the children will be on exhibit and a film produced by Anais Dominguez portraying the making of “New Beginnings” will be featured.

Wendy White, President of the New Light Foundation, Inc, directs and produces this labor of love as a result of a dream to help children learn to express themselves via the medium of playwrighting. Wendy has been working year-round at the shelter in the children’s after school program, “ACES” (After-school – Art – Academics- Collaborations for Educational Success), and will ultimately present a documentary which shares the children’s hopes and dreams through their eyes.

“I am deeply honored to help the children who participate in the ACES program and reside at the homeless shelter how to express and share their stories – the program’s goal is to give the children hope by being heard and encouraged through their circumstances – what results is a creative way to have fun and joy through the arts,” states Wendy, also a Playwright and Artist.

Donations are accepted for the children and their families residing at Shepherd’s Way/HOPE South Florida. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased online at: www.newlightgallery.org or over the phone at: 954.829.0638.

“If you reach for the stars, all you get are the stars. But we’ve found a whole new spin. If you reach for the heavens, you get the stars thrown in.” —Mary Poppins

The Shepherd’s Way/HOPE South Florida provides shelter and life skill classes to homeless and hurting families throughout Broward County crossing denominational lines, Protestants and Catholics alike came together, united to serve individuals and families living on the streets.” For more information visit:https://www.hopesouthflorida.org/

Chris and Bob are talented, award-winning artists in their own right and will incorporate drawing/painting demonstrations into their presentation.

In Chris’s latest EVERYONE CAN LEARN TO RIDE A BICYCLE: Learning to ride a bike is one of the most important milestones of childhood, and no one captures the emotional ups and downs of the experience better than Chris Raschka, who won the 2012 Caldecott Medal for A Ball for Daisy. Using very few words and lots of expressive pictures, here is a picture book that not only shows kids how to learn to ride, but captures what it feels like to fall . . . get up . . . fall again . . . and finally “by luck, grace, and determination” ride a bicycle!

Bob Staake’s latest BLUEBIRD: In this emotional picture book, readers will be captivated as they follow the journey of a bluebird as he develops a friendship with a young boy and ultimately risks his life to save the boy from harm. Bob Staake has been working on this book for 10 years, and truly believes he was born to write this story.

This event is brought to us by Random House Unplugs: Random House is committed to helping schools, libraries and bookstores nationwide UNPLUG and Read during Screen Free Week to raise awareness about the importance of balancing screen time against other developmentally important tasks, like reading.

Join us as we welcome Ella Cisneros, a Venezuelan –born major art collector, who runs the Cisneros Fontanels Foundation in Miami.

If anything defines the adventure of twentieth-century art it is its liberation from the pursuit of beauty as an end in itself. It was a moment of change in which art and artists arose as researchers and producers of knowl¬edge, reflection and experience. In this convulsive panorama that shook the very foundations of art, as we can see in Pulses of Abstraction in Latin America, we find some of the most inspiring experiences and ex¬plorations ever to occur in the history of art.

There will be a conversation between Ella Cisneros and Peter Boswell, Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale Curator at Large.

He is a fifth-generation master weaver who learned the traditional style of ancient weaving, known as Cumbimayocs, from his parents and grandparents – all master weavers from Ayacucho, Peru. While he is ultimately respectful of the iconography and colors of the ancient Huari culture (which predates the Inca culture), it is his juxtaposition of those traditions with his own design elements and narrative that have earned him many international awards, distinctions, and exhibits. Laura is a scholar of textile art and has traveled the world exploring and teaching in his field.

Dr. Carol Damian, Director of The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University

In the ancient world of the Andes, the Wari Empire is quite known to the general public, eclipsed by the Incas. However, the Wari reigned for 400 years as the largest dominant culture before the Inca took over their territory. Who were they and what happened to them? What can we learn from the artifacts that remain? This talk will introduce the Wari, the objects of their culture now described as art, and their relationship to the Inca Empire that followed almost 200 years later.

This lecture is complimentary for museum members and $15 for non- members. Reservations are required. Please RSVP to Kelly Medlin at kmedlin@moafl.org or call (954) 262-0227

Iron Throne:
6.5% ABV blonde Ale, brewed with a robust amount of pils, honey malt, and aroma malts and red wheat. Gentle hoppin includes Styrian Golding and Hallertau Spalter Select, appropriately noble hops. Spiced with grains of paradise and lemon peel. The hue is a slightly-hazy golden amber. The head is full and fluffy. Finish is crisp, backed by a touch of spice and hops. Aroma is a bit grassy with a hint of lemon and fruitiness from the yeast. Taste is lightly malty rounded out by honey malt sweetness. In Iron Throne we’ve brewed a fine ale combining rich flavors and aromas- along with easy drinkability, bringing sheer drinking pleasure.

Green Flash Black IPA:
This American-style Black IPA is nearly jet black and perceived to have high hop bitterness, flavor and aroma with medium-high alcohol content, balanced with a medium body. The appearance may trick you into thinking you are about to enjoy a traditional stout beer when in fact your senses are about to be overwhelmed with our Black IPA. Juicy, fruity, floral, and pine from Pacific Northwest hops gives the beer a classic West Coast IPA hop character. The Black IPA is further characterized by a balanced and moderate degree of caramel malt and subdued dark roasted malt flavor and aroma. 7.2% ABV, 85
Hops used: Warrior, Citra, Cascade

Fort Lauderdale, Florida FL

As is the tradition on the first Saturday in February, the Third Avenue artists open their studios at no charge to the public. The next Annual ArtWalk is scheduled for Saturday, February 2, 2013 from 6-10pm.

The studios are located north of Broward Boulevard, on and around NE Third Avenue. There is free street parking along NE Third Avenue and throughout the area. One can walk to several of the studios or hop on the free trolley service. The trolley will circulate between the venues all evening and stop at each one.

If you are looking where to start, there are several options: just come between the four and five hundred block of NE Third Avenue (you can check the map on this site) or start at the museum of art, where there is ample downtown parking and hop on the trolley, or there is a public parking building next to (east of) City Hall on 2nd and 1st Street between 3rd Avenue and Andrews Ave.

There will be twinkle lights and banners and trolley stop signage at all locations. So come join us for a fun evening, meet the artists, talk about their work and about art in general. Maybe even add or start a collection of your own.

For this event, guests will enjoy a tasting of 4 wines paired with hors d’oeuvres. Cost is $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

One of country music’s giants, George Jones, is bringing his unparalleled voice to The Pavilion at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek on Saturday, February 9 at 8 p.m. Tickets go on sale on Thursday, December 13, 2012.

With a run of songs extending from the 1950s into the 21st century, Jones has had a whopping 143 Top 40 country hits and is frequently referred to as the greatest living country singer. He was a co-writer on his first chart hit, 1955’s “Why Baby Why,” and in the ‘60s recorded hundreds of songs including the number one classics “Tender Years,” “She Thinks I Still Care,” “Walk Through This World With Me” as well as more ephemeral fare like “Love Bug.”

Jones paired up with producer Billy Sherrill in the ‘70s and ‘80s, and their work together exemplified the lusciously string-drenched style known as “country-politan.” In the years that followed, he racked up hit after iconic hit, including “A Good Year for the Roses,” “The Grand Tour,” “I Always Get Lucky With You” and “If Drinkin’ Don’t Kill Me (Her Memory Will).” One 1980s smash in particular, “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” became widely regarded as the greatest country single of all time.

He has received the four highest honors that can be granted to anyone in his line of work, starting with his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1992. A decade later, the president bestowed the National Medal of Arts upon him, and he was saluted by the Kennedy Center Honors in 2008. In early 2012, Jones was presented another top honor as he received the Grammy’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Approximately 56 years after being named the Most Promising New Country Vocalist of 1956, Jones still lives out that promise with a regular touring routine. Audiences flock to hear the voice that is country’s most indescribable as well as, by acclamation, its finest.

Tickets start at $70* and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. *Additional fees may apply

Tap ‘N’ Run 4k Beer Race combines a ridiculous running race – a 4k with 4 beer chug stations (chug stations = 3-4 oz. of beer per) along the race course, a full beer at the Finish Line, crazy costumes, great times with friends, and unbelievable athleticism. JAM Active has teamed up with some rad bars in Downtown Ft. Lauderdale to create this awesome day of racing and community enjoyment!

JamActive has partnered with the Little Warrior Project and has decided to donate ALL PROCEEDS made from beer sales. The Little Warrior Project is non-profit organization that takes a hands-on approach to provide military children with direct programs, services and events that cater to their unique emotional, social, and academic needs. The goal of the Little Warrior Project is to provide military children with the tools they need to improve morale, welfare and overall quality of life

In addition to being a part of an awesome and unique racing experience, all participants will receive a sweet Finisher’s medal (that doubles as a bottle opener…no, really), the equivalent of over two beers and a Tap ‘N’ Run t-shirt to commemorate your amazing accomplishment. We also professionally time the race so you and your friends can laugh about how long it took to finish a mere 4k while sipping some suds!

In conjunction with ARTtuesday/Miami, a monthly gathering of artists, arts professionals and aficionados, Girls’ Club hosts a panel discussion to consider the role of drawing in the current contemporary art environment.

Enjoying a close proximity to the artist’s hand and thought, drawings have historically been defined as intimate. With little technological advancement since the 19th century, the medium is often eclipsed by new media and large-scale projects in the contemporary art market.

Join us as we discuss the trajectory of and prognosis for contemporary drawing.

Virginia Fifield, visual artist, Hollywood, FL
