*WHO: Basement Miami’s “Gio’s Total Split Show!†invites guests to partake in a special edition of the amped up madness this Monday in Bowl, but this time on Ice, Ice, Baby! Participants will experience an interactive speed and performance bowling game, hosted by none other than the magnificent master of ceremonies, Gio, along with his sidekick Pin-Tits, and featuring sounds by Otto Von Schriach.
*WHAT: The rules of the game are simple. Each team must have 4-6 players, and they must all be present 15 minutes prior to their starting time. Each team must complete a game in less than 45 minutes.

Lights, sound, action! From Thursday, May 12 through May 14, Miami’s newly opened, buzz-worthy cabaret, El Tucán, draws the curtains on Gerardo Contino y Los Habaneros for a weekend takeover launch.
The Havana-born Gerardo Contino, “El Abogado de la Salsa,†is a Cuban singer and songwriter. This former lead singer of the Cuban mega-group NG La Banda is a party onstage: he loves to improvise, pull the audience into call & response, and provoke fans into hip-shaking abandon. Since moving to New York City, Gerardo started his own band, “Gerardo Contino y Los Habaneros,†with Axel Tosca Laugart, Luisito Quintero, and John Benitez. They released their debut album, Somos Latinos, in 2013 to very high critical acclaim. Together the two have toured all over the world, as well as in Gerardo’s new hometown, NYC.
WHAT: Offering a departure from the usually scheduled shows, “Weekend Takeovers†will bring to the stage an exciting, new concert series. El Tucan hopes to enlighten Miami by providing access to unique Latin American talent. Once a month, the weekend takeover will also bring great Cuban bands from New York to perform an exclusive 3 day residency.
Performing Thursday, May 12 through May 14, Gerardo Contino y Los Habaneros will be the second installment of the weekend takeover. After a successful Weekend Takeover this past April by Chino Pons y Grupo Irek, another New York City cuban artist, the venue is excited to have Gerardo Contino y Los Habaneros join them this month of May for the next 3 day residency.

Miami based hip-hop artist and wordsmith Nick Grammar will be bringing his MC skills to the Sunday School Festival at Sidebar, Miami. Grammar will be one of six artists opening the show for Rakim, a highly regarded figure in the hip-hop culture.
Nick Grammar is a man of many talents and he will be putting his MC skills on display Sunday, April 17th at the Sunday School Festival at Sidebar. Doors open at 4:00 p.m. and the event ends at 12:00 a.m. ( midnight.)
Suffice to say he is not a man of few words. In fact, Nick Grammar has a lot to say and he articulates it with the discipline, focus and precision of a sensei warrior. Grammar’s ability to master the language of hip-hop and rap verbiage comes from his love of the music and a desire to dispel any and all myths about this particular music art form. Rap and hip-hop for many years had the reputation of having come from street performers who forewent the benefit of higher education to pursue a life in the world of music. Grammar’s illuminating performances prove that particular line of thinking to be false and that it takes a lot more than just hanging out on the corner to carve out a successful career in music or any profession a person may choose as their life’s work.
“Having the opportunity to leave a footprint is important to me. The contribution I would like to make to Hip-Hop is conveying the significance of originality in one’s music and style, reminding people that hip-hop is the culture and rap is the musical and lyrical art form born out of that culture,†said Grammar. Nick’s dedication and hard work ethics are a mainstay of his life and play a big role in why he has been able to realize many of his goals and see them come to fruition. “I do not let a day go by without giving thanks and then I proceed with the work at hand,†said Grammar.
When asked how he felt about opening for Rakim, who is regarded as one of the most influential and skilled MC’s of all time, Grammar was quoted as saying, “I’m excited. Rakim represents the foundation for lyricism in hip-hop content and style. It was Rakim who brought the microphone to the frontline of the stage show.†Music has always been at the forefront of Nick Grammar’s goals, and yet, it is just one of the many pursuits he has excelled in. Grammar is also a mixed martial artist with distinction, a Golden Gloves champion and holds a black belt in Brazilian Ju-jitsu. He is currently on tap to open O2 Bar – a fitness and nutrition center in the Miami area. Opening O2 Bar may arguably be one of the best and most auspicious endeavors to date, for Grammar. Having risen above great odds with a life that has been as storied as the imagination would allow, at present, it would be fair to say that Nick Grammar is a man whose time has come.

Erick Morillo:
With his A-list celebrity chums, astronomical bank balance and palatial homes in Miami, Ibiza and soon Los Angeles, few people epitomize the ‘superstar DJ’ like Erick Morillo. The organizers of the IMS music conference in Ibiza certainly thought so, inviting Erick to give a talk entitled ‘Big Dog DJs: Fuck You I’m Famous’ earlier this year.
“People definitely know my name, but I’ve worked hard to get here,” Erick says. “It’s not like I think people should bow before me because I’m some big star.”
Although, with his Subliminal Sessions nights at Pacha having enjoyed their 13th year (making Morillo the White Isle’s longest-serving resident DJ in 2010) Ibiza is already conquered. With a resurgent Subliminal Records churning out floor fillers by the month, two new albums – one solo and one with Jose Nunez and Harry ‘Choo Choo’ Romero as The Dronez – in production and a live show in the works, Morillo is now redoubling his campaign to take America. The next shot in which will be DJing at the opening of the exclusive Marquee club in the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas on New Year’s Eve, appearing alongside Jay-Z and Coldplay.

The Florida International University Department of Architecture’s Eco Couture Recycling Fashion Show will launch its successful event for a third year in a row. The fashion show will feature a variety of outfits that are completely made from recycled materials. The event, which was created with the purpose of promoting sustainability through fashion, strives to educate and inspire the community about good recycling habits and an environmentally-friendly lifestyle. This year’s runway is expected to showcase more than 50 outfits, all of which will be reusable. All proceeds from this event go towards scholarships for students in the FIU Department of Architecture.
The Eco Couture Recycling Fashion Show is hosted by Event Founder, Artistic Director, and FIU Architecture alumna Amira Ajlouni ’14 and Event Partner, Artistic Director, and current Architecture graduate student Jennifer Luis. The Miami Beach EDITION is thrilled to announce its dynamic roster of events taking place at Basement Miami for Miami Art Week 2015. Following one of the most talked about hotel launches, which took place over last year’s Art Basel, Miami’s leading nightlife and entertainment venue strikes back better than ever, with a week-long series of events, that kicks off with a 1 year anniversary celebration.
To kick off Miami Art Week, conceptual light artist, Olivia Steele, will unveil two light installations made of neon, which will be located in the ice skating rink and ‘Larry Lounge’ of the club, and remain as permanent installations. From Tuesday through Sunday, Basement Miami will be stacked with a lineup of cutting edge international DJs, such as disco legend Giorgio Moroder, Seth Troxler, DJ Harvey, and Kanye West’s creative director, Virgil Abloh, along with local favorites, DJ Ross One and DZA. With parties hosted by Paper Magazine and Whitewall Magazine, and art collaborations with Material Art Fair and Anonymous Gallery, Basement Miami’s events will feature prime talent and the best crowds, all complemented by state of the art sound and lighting systems.
