The graceful Brazilian guitarist and singer Vinicius Cantuária, whose professional career began as a composer and drummer with Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil among others, moved to New York in 1994 and became immersed in a downtown scene that found him mixing it up with musicians as varied as Bill Frisell, Laurie Anderson and Brad Mehldau, as well as leading his own contemporary Brazilian jazz bands. For the past year or so, he’s been living most of the time “here at my house in Rio and on airplanes,” says Cantuária. This wonderful quintet will perform a mix songs by the prolific composer Antonio Jobim that will include classics like “Chega de Saudade,” “A Felicidade” and “The Girl from Ipanema”. The Concert Band & Soldiers’ Chorus are the oldest and largest of The U.S. Army Field Band’s performing components. Founded in 1946 and 1957 respectively, these two ensembles combine to present joint concerts on their national tours. They have performed in all 50 states and 30 foreign countries for audiences totaling hundreds of millions.
The 65-member Concert Band and 29-member Soldiers’ Chorus perform regularly in some of the most famous concert halls in the world, and just as often in the humblest auditoriums in the smallest of communities. The joining of these two ensembles allows them to offer unparalleled versatility of programming, ranging from orchestral masterworks and operatic arias to Sousa marches, jazz classics, and Broadway musicals. The band and chorus also perform independently, and have recently shared the stage with such ensembles as the Boston Pops, the Cincinnati Pops, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra.
In addition to their national tours, formal concerts, chamber recitals, and educational outreach, members of the Concert Band & Soldiers’ Chorus frequently represent the Army at formal and ceremonial functions, including the Presidential Inaugural Parade, presidential funerals, the Army All-American Bowl, and diplomatic efforts overseas.

This past Thursday, the Pérez Art Museum (PAMM) Poplife Social featured John Hancock III whose sounds ranged from spaced out Arthur Russell inspired grooves to hyped-up digital calypso.
The third Thursdays Poplife Social have received a very positive response from the community and to meet the growing demand for the series, they have added pre-ticketing and more food and bar stations.

The anticipated live performance will begin at 6:30PM where the Miami-based multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and songwriter will take the Pineapple Stage in the Ball & Chain garden debuting songs off his newest album co-produced by Ball & Chain. The event will also feature the funky and star-studded jam band Vlade Divak, who will play live from 4PM to 6PM.
The “Live at The Ball & Chain” album is a compilation of the 10 best tracks recorded live and part of an on-going series co-produced by the taste making, chart-topping venue.
The album includes classic O’Hara tracks such as “Vacation” and “Champagne & Apple Juice” as well as new tracks including “Jah’Fake’Ya” and “Good Bad Girls,” among others and a passionate cover of “House of the Rising Sun”. This group exhibition builds on the work: Temporary Autonomous Zones (TAZ) by Hakim Bey (Peter Lamborn Wilson). The project is curated by Richard Haden.
TAZ “alludes to creating temporary spaces that elude formal structures of control…thus creating the foundation for authenticity and spontaneityâ€. Richard Haden proposes to articulate the exhibition through TAZ and the ways in which it has to do with recreating an “intentional community†(IC) which relates to how past communities purposefully organized in various forms as collectives, to succeed as small villages or townships, guilds, radical groups, et cetera, that eventually gave way to controlling socio-economic structures, which eventually led to the loss of authentic empowerment.

The “fiercely gifted†(New York Times) pianist Sarah Cahill returns to Miami to perform yet another fantastic program. The event is set to celebrate the 80th birthday of Terry Riley, one of the most iconic American composers. Sarah explains: “His music is far more complex and adventurous than people give him credit for, and he has written so much terrific music since In C,†his most infamous opus. Newly commissioned works of four emerging composers (Sam Adams, Danny Clay, Christine Southworth and Dylan Mattingly) are featured together with pieces by Pauline Oliveros, Evan Ziporyn and Juraj Kojs.
Sarah talks about the concert: “What I love about this program is that each composer reflects on Terry Riley’s music but none of the pieces sound like him.  Using a tiny speaker hidden in the piano, Sam Adams creates resonances with sine waves in duet with the pianist.  Evan Ziporyn’s You Are Getting Sleepy gets some of its inspiration from Evan’s work with Balinese gamelan and Ghanaian drumming.  Christine Southworth’s Sparkita and Her Kittens deconstructs a Bollywood soundtrack.  25-year-old Danny Clay’s three-movement Circle Songs shimmers with Terry Riley’s sunny positive California energy, but the resemblances stop there. Pauline Oliveros’ A Trilling Piece for Terry is a structured improvisation, which I have been playing as a duet with whoever is turning pages for that particular concert.  Pauline has known Terry since the 60s when they co-founded the San Francisco Tape Music Center, so it’s particularly meaningful to have a piece by her.â€
The concert features a world premiere: Kojs’ In the Mist, a piece also commissioned by Sarah Cahill. The work combines traditional playing and unconventional extended techniques, including the reformulation of pianist’s hands and feet as percussion instruments.

Orchestra Miami invites you to experience the biblical story of Noah and his ark, as it come alive in Benjamin Britten’s Noye’s Fludde, an opera for the whole family. Based on the Chester Miracle Plays, Britten’s piece combines the voices of the students from Orchestra Miami’s Liberty City Sings Performance Project and the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, with the talents of students from the South Florida Youth Symphony, the Sunrise School of Miami Orchestra and many others performing alongside the professional musicians from Orchestra Miami, to present a pageant of biblical proportions!
Noye’s Fludde features two of Miami’s most esteemed professional opera singers, alongside a cast of students from area public schools. Bass-baritone Lloyd Reshard, Jr. stars as Noye, and soprano Jouvanca Jean-Baptiste dazzles in the comic role of Mrs. Noye. Noye’s sons and wives are sung by Luis Lafaurie, Alejandra Gonzalez, Michael Gil, Ybriana Rodriguez and Amanda Lopez- all 6th graders at the Miami Arts Studio @ Zelda Glazer Middle School and Elysabeth Bengochea, a 5th grader at South Miami Arts Magnet K-8 School. The “Gossips†and the Animals of the Ark will be sung by students from the Liberty City Sings Performance Program and the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center. The production will be directed by renowned theater director Michael Yawney and conducted by Orchestra Miami’s Artistic Director Elaine Rinaldi, with costume design by Marina Pareja and set design by Ainex Carmona. The performance is being presented in association with the Miami Children’s Initiative, the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center with major sponsorship by the Center for Social Change and the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture.
The Performances will be held on Saturday, May 30th at 4:00 & 7:00 PM at Miami Northwestern Senior High School, 1100 NW 71 Street, Miami, FL 33150. Guest artists Bobby Cruz and Hansel & Raul help make this a coming of age project for Puente, Jr. and the album has received heavy praise from Tropical and Latin Jazz critics alike.

KCC Productions presents Jazz at MOCA featuring Vivian Sessoms
“A Powerhouse” (Quincy Jones)
Vivacious, vibrant, vigorous – all adjectives that describe the voice and performance of Vivian Sessoms. On Friday, April 24, you can experience this for yourself between 8 and 9:30 PM at North Miami’s Museum of Contemporary Art (“MOCA”) in a free performance of her special take on jazz and soul. Vivian, born and raised in Harlem, New York, was born with a love of music instilled in her as the daughter of two prominent musicians and niece of Nacy Wilson. Her mother was a former jingle and session singer, her father, a well-known flautist and percussionist who worked with James Brown and several other well-known musicians throughout his career.
Vivian began classically training her voice at the age of nine, and it wasn’t long before she was so well versed in her craft that she won a scholarship to the highly acclaimed Amas | Eubie Blake Repertory Company headed by the late Rosetta Lenoire. This was where she began training in theatre, dance and music, which eventually led her to a successful run in radio and television voiceovers. In fact, you’ve probably heard her, she was the soothing sound of a soprano in commercials that convinced you to purchase such products as Campbells Soup, Coke, Hershey’s and many more.
As a performer, Vivian has sung with many of the worlds most recognized artists: Stevie Wonder, Chris Botti, Cher, Christina Aguilera, Diddy, P!nk, Chaka Khan, Ke$ha, Rob Thomas, Patti Labelle, Patti Austin, Sinead O’Connor and numerous others. As a writer, Vivian has worked with just as many artists, including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Towa Tei, Lalah Hathaway, Amel Larrieux, Junior Vazquez and David Morales.
In 2007, Vivian and partner Chris Parks released their debut CD entitled “Sunny One Day,” to critical acclaim. Billboard magazine referred to Vivian’s voice as “clear and exquisiteâ€, Uptown magazine called her voice “powerfulâ€, and Urban Network magazine called Sunny One Day “an impressive debut so polished and effortless sounding, it’s as if it bonds to your DNA and defies you to stop playing itâ€.
Vivian is currently putting the finishing touches on a follow up cd, her first jazz effort, entitled “Heart,” due out this summer.

Famed Drummer Brings Jazz from New York March 14
Two-time Grammy winner Will Calhoun brings his jazz project to the South Motors Jazz Series at Pinecrest Gardens March 14 at 8 PM. Will is promoting his critically acclaimed CD “Life In This World” (Motéma Music). “Life…” features such notables as Ron Carter, Donald Harrison, Wallace Roney, and John Benitez, supplementing the trio of Will, Marc Cary, and Charnett Moffett. “Life In This World is a spiritual title,” Calhoun says, “which to me just means the sonic world of my experiences. It’s Will Calhoun in the sense of what influences me and what inspires me, but aimed more towards a jazz audience.” Says Carol Banks Weber of examiner.com, “Will Calhoun’s latest breakthrough jazz album, “Life In This World,†has it all. It deserves more than five stars. It deserves a Grammy.”
He is currently working on a recording, to be released in the Fall of 2015, celebrating the music of Elvin Jones. The album will feature Sonny Fortune and other alumni of The Jazz Machine. In addition, he is a featured artist in Sibylle Szaggars Redford’s paean to the living Earth, “The Way of the Rain,” performed at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. Also in the works is an exciting project from West Africa. Will is a new breed of ethnomusicologist, combining his ancestral research with many years of commercial success in jazz, rock, urban, alternative, ambient, and other musical forms of the world into a beautiful swirling expression of life.
Will Calhoun has composed, produced, and toured with Mick Jagger, Mos Def, Oumou Sangaré, Marcus Miller, and Wayne Shorter (on the Grammy-winning CD, High Life), Pharoah Sanders, The Rolling Stones, Lauryn Hill, Herb Alpert, Public Enemy, Paul Simon, Stanley Jordan, Jaron Lanier, and many more. He is an alumnus of the Sundance Composer Lab Program. He has recently broadened his artistic expression to film scores, photography, and a collection of artwork crafted from rhythm titled “AZA”. Having announced its colossal Phase One lineup back in January 2015, the World’s Premier Electronic Music Festival now unveils the second wave of talent set to perform at the seventeenth annual edition of Ultra Music Festival over Miami Music Week this March.
Receiving the biggest boost for Phase Two is Ultra Music Festival’s now-legendary Live Stage, which will be playing host to some of the most exciting live performers in the world from March 27-29, 2015. Gracing the Live Stage, and joining an already eye-watering batch of Phase One acts set to rock the iconic Klipsch Amphitheatre in just a few weeks time, will be phase 2 headliners including instrumental super group Big Gigantic, Canadian electro-funk duo Chromeo, masked man of mystery Claptone and Norwegian nu-disco extraordinaire Todd Terje, who will be making his long awaited Ultra debut!
Recently formed project Get Real (aka Chicago House legend Green Velvet and Dirtybird head honcho Claude Von Stroke) will be headlining Ultra’s newly conceived Resistance Stage on Saturday March 28, as two of the biggest names in house music make their collaborative worldwide festival debut and prepare to send the vast wave of Ultranauts joining this year’s Resistance into a tech infused frenzy.
Additionally, and in a big move for the South Florida festival giant, techno kingpin and phase 2 headliner Seth Troxler is now confirmed to perform in the mighty Carl Cox & Friends Megastructure on Saturday 28, while the mammoth Ultra Worldwide stage prepares to welcome the return of another phase 2 headliner and Ultra firm favorite, Boys Noize and Miami local Cedric Gervais.
Ultra Music Festival will also be welcoming an official OWSLA stage for the very first time this year, led by some of the biggest names in bass, including Wiwek, Salva, Jack Beats, AC Slater and many more. Space Ibiza (named DJ Mag’s #1 club in the world for 2014) will be making its return for the fourth consecutive year to Ultra on Sunday 29, alongside Armin Van Buuren’s globally famed ASOT arena, which will be seeing off proceedings in the Megastructure for a finale to remember, while Stage 7 sees a total trance makeover on Saturday, with the likes of Orjan Nilsen, Giuseppe Ottaviani, Solarstone, Jochen Miller, Sied Van Riel and many more all now confirmed.
As if this weren’t enough, adding to the already huge first wave of talent set to grace this year’s newly designed Main Stage will be Las Vegas based progressive house pioneer 3LAU, Swedish super duo Cazzette, trance icon Dash Berlin and the man behind one of the biggest records of this year, which was used in as the official soundtrack to the Ultra Miami Phase One Trailer (Treasured Soul), Michael Calfan.

Marco Fusi, the Italian violist par excellence presents a program of the 21st-century Italian music for viola and for viola and cello with the Miami-based Jason Calloway.
Fusi believes that music unveils “something really mysterious and unpredictable†via a performer. Most of the programmed works are a result of personal collaboration with the composer: “Working together is the best way to learn about music, about yourself and about other points of view,†claims Fusi, pointing to the importance of expanding one’s musical horizons. Fusi is excited about musing the personal with professional. It is, in fact, the first time he will perform with the cellist Jason Calloway—his long-time friend and the new music string champion in Miami.
The program includes several US premieres and a World premiere by Luciano Chessa, that engages some curious “seasonal†items. Fusi is excited about sharing a diverse sample of contemporary Italian music with the South Florida audiences, offering a rare aural look “through a window the contemporary Italian soundscape.â€
About the artist
Marco Fusi, violinist, violist and composer studied with Dimitrios Polisoidis, Ernst Kovacic and Jeanne-Marie Conquer. Marco has performed with conductors and soloists including Pierre Boulez, Lorin Maazel, Peter Eötvös , Beat Furrer, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Gustav Kuhn, Jürg Wyttenbach, Jean Deroyer, and Marco Angius. He has premiered new works by composers Castiglioni, Eötvös, Sciarrino, Vacchi, and Cattaneo, among others. Marco has had the opportunity to perform concerts in renowned halls such as the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam, Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, KKL Konzertsaal in Lucerne, Beyond Baroque in Los Angeles, Experimental Intermedia in NYC, Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow, and the Béla Bartók Concert Hall in Budapest. Marco has collaborated with Ensemble Algoritmo (Rome), Interface (Frankfurt), Proton (Bern), Linea (Strasbourg), Phoenix (Basel), l’Arsenale (Treviso), MotoPerpetuo (NYC), Ecce (Boston), and Handwerk (Köln). His complete recording of John Cage’s Freeman Etudes was released by Stradivarius; he has been invited to present this project, giving concerts, masterclasses and lectures at University of Southern California, Arizona State University, and the Milan Conservatory. Marco was a member of Lucerne Festival Academy from 2007 to 2012, under the artistic and musical direction of Pierre Boulez.

The City of Miami Gardens presents the annual Jazz in the Gardens Pre-Party at the Miramar Cultural Center, at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, March 20, 2015. The Rickey Smiley Morning Show will host the evening of music and comedy on the plaza, featuring Rickey Smiley, Claudia Jordan, Gary Wit Da Tea, Special K, Lavar Walker, and Cory Zooman Miller, and live performances by the DMC Band.

This Miami Music Week, kick things off right at one of the city’s newest and most talked about venues, Steam Miami. Steam will be hosting a special Noon Records showcase on their one of a kind, outdoor patio, LOT 14. Boasting a massive line-up, including Noon Records label boss Reboot himself, the showcase will also feature music by Uner (Diynamic, Visionquest), Todd Terry (Toolroom, InHouse Records), Romano Alfieri (Noon Records), Matteo Spedicati (Noon Records) and Melanie Ribbe (Noon Records).
