10 Days of Connection is a community-led initiative to promote kindness and inclusion in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. From May 1-10, participants are invited to attend connection experiences hosted by more than 100 local organizations, and are challenged to step outside of their comfort zone to forge new connections across lines of difference.

In recent years, people have become increasingly divided across lines of difference. Incidents of hate have increased, and tolerance for differing ideas has decreased. For ten days each year, we challenge the entire community to break down silos and engage in acts of connection, to build empathy, to increase understanding, and to refocus on our shared humanity.

NAMI Miami-Dade County expects to attract thousands of people and seat close to 800 people at the 4th Annual Reel Minds Miami Mental Health Film Festival at the University of Miami’s Donna E. Shalala Center on Sunday, May 19, 2019 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. This year’s festival will showcase six short films. The narratives behind these films will share a range of life experiences meant to inspire, heal, and empower people. Following each short film, an individual with a lived experience of a mental health challenge will speak on the films’ topic for a few minutes providing further insight about the message behind each film.

This year’s lineup is comprised of films from a variety of talented directors, including a member of the International Cinematographers Guild, a multi-award-winning actor and Navy Veteran, and an award-winning filmmaker. The six films were chosen out of almost 200 submissions based on their compelling storytelling and way of educating and dispelling the myth behind mental illness. Submitted films were judged by film makers, clinicians, high school and college students, individuals with mental illness and their family members.

The 2019 lineup includes Terms of Us by director, writer, producer Roberto Sanchez, a Cuban born, Miami raised Navy Veteran who has a recurring role on Queen of the South. Additionally, Roberto will be speaking at the festival; Baby Steps from Los Angeles director, Eric Dyson; Misdirection by Carly Usdin, a University of Central Florida graduate with Miami ties, now an award-winning filmmaker based in Los Angeles; Reverie by Nick Markham; Saving Billy by Vickie Adams; and UkeLayla, directed and produced by a team of recent Miamians and graduates from the University of Central Florida.

“Films are a compelling storytelling form that connects with our deepest sensibilities, and research suggests that film festivals have a positive impact on stigma and recovery in mental illness. That’s why for the fourth consecutive year, NAMI Miami-Dade is showcasing a curated list of short films inspired by the lives of those who have been affected by mental illness,” says Kathryn Coppola, Executive Director at NAMI Miami. “Together, we can spark the awareness that makes the difference in our society.” NAMI Miami’s goal is to “end the silence” and to start the conversation about mental health proving that recovery is possible.

All Programs are free and open to the community and include: Support Groups, an Advocacy Coalition, Peer-to-Peer recovery focused educational program for individuals living with a mental health condition; Family-to Family, an education program for family, caregivers and friends of individuals living with a mental health condition; and NAMI’s newest program, Ending the Silence, and education and prevention multi-media program designed for youth, school staff and parents.

Guitars Over Guns is a Miami-based 501(c)(3) non-profit that provides mentoring to at-risk youth through music education and performance. History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will honor The Forman Family, Broward County pioneers and early developers, and Fort Lauderdale Commissioner, District #2, Steven Glassman during its History Makers 2019 fundraiser set for Tuesday, April 30, at 6 p.m., at the New River Inn. The event spotlights individuals who have made an impact on the growth of the City of Fort Lauderdale.

For over a century, the Forman family has been major contributors to the development of Fort Lauderdale and Broward County. Ever since Hamilton and Blanche Collins Forman arrived in 1910, they, and their descendants, have played leading roles in the fields of agriculture, business, water management, education, public service and philanthropy. Dr. Charles Forman and his brother Hamilton Forman were Broward’s most powerful political figures from the 1950s to the 1990s. When their pioneer dairy farms and pastures were closed to facilitate the building of Florida’s Turnpike in the mid-1950s, the family turned their attention toward education and building a world-class education complex on their land. Today, the former farmland houses campuses of Florida Atlantic University, Florida International and the University of Florida’s Broward complexes, Nova elementary, middle and high schools, Broward Community College and Nova Southeastern University.

Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner, District #2, Steven Glassman, has been a foremost advocate of historic preservation, arts and culture and philanthropy in Broward County for close to 25 years. For 11 years, Glassman was an administrator for the Broward County Cultural Division where he worked closely with elected officials and business leaders to further the quality of life in all of Broward’s major cities through the arts and culture. This work included serving on advisory boards in Hollywood, Miramar, and Pembroke Pines. He has served on the City of Fort Lauderdale’s Beach Redevelopment Advisory Board (three years) and the Planning and Zoning Board (six years). His many years in various civic leadership positions include president of the Broward Trust for Historic Preservation and a seven-year tenure as the president of the Central Beach Alliance. Steve has also served as president of several beach condominium associations including his current six-year tenure at the Sapphire Condominium. He has remained focused on fixing our city’s infrastructure via smart growth and proactive future planning.

This year’s event will also celebrate the city’s 108th birthday with cocktails, food and drink stations from Ruth’s Chris Steak House, CA Catering, LauderAle, Gran Forno and more to be announced plus themed entertainment on the downtown Fort Lauderdale campus.

On March 22, 2013, Havana 1957 opened its second location on the Pedestrian-friendly Lincoln Road. The goal was to bring the glamour and glory of Cuba in the 1950s to the streets of Miami with simple but delicious traditional Cuban cuisine.

“Bodacious Bodices” – March 2nd and 3rd Behind every good man is a wench in the trench. Wenches Weekend celebrates the women of the Renaissance with hourglass curves and firey attitudes who can go toe-to-toe with their male counterparts.

For the fourth year in a row, the timeless Florida Renaissance Festival will offer SEVEN jam-packed themed weekends to ring in its 27th season. This fantastical journey will allow attendees to be transported back into 16th-century Europe. Greeted by jesters, jugglers and jousting knights upon entering the gates, sweet melodies can be heard from every corner of the kingdom. It’s a full day of entertainment where the entire family can marvel at fan favorite acts and performances that include immersive and interactive, real audience-participation scenarios. The Florida Renaissance Festival is produced by the nationally acclaimed Bobby Rodriguez Productions and strives to create an entertaining and cultural experience for adults and children alike. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Slow Food Miami presents its “Snail Social” roaming Happy Hour event on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 from 6PM to 8PM hosted by Exquisito Chocolates, Miami’s first chocolate factory.

For February’s Snail Social, Carolina Quijano, owner of Exquisito Chocolates, will take guests on a journey through the factory that will allow them to taste and experience every step of the bean-to-bar process. Bites include fresh roasted cacao, chocolate cold brew, single estate chocolate, their signature Little Guavana truffle made from Redland guava from Snail Social honoree, PG Tropicals, as well as a fresh guava rum punch for sipping. Additionally, attendees will receive 20% off of retail shop items.

This event is open to the public; $10 donation if guests RSVP in advance through Eventbrite and $15 cash at the door. Tickets can be purchased here. Snail Social attendees can enjoy the Happy Hour menu from 6PM to 8PM. Hurricane Irma served as the major catalyst that spurred Slow Food Miami to turn their monthly gatherings into fundraisers that would connect the community with the obstacles that farmers face, and to support the local farms most in need. The donations go directly to the Slow Food Farm Fund to support local farm operations in times of agricultural need. The team extends their gratitude for helping them keep good, clean fair food on the tables in South Florida.

There will be a Snail Social hosted by different Snail of Approval chefs and restaurants throughout Miami on the second Tuesday of every month. Inarguably, Coconut Grove’s Ariete is among the restaurants defining dining in Miami. Since opening in 2016 the restaurant has garnered a ravenous following and namechecked by everything from Food & Wine to The New York Times. In celebration of its three-year anniversary, Chef/Owner Michael Beltran is throwing a fête complete with live music, drink specials, special menus and, in true Miami fashion, Publix cake.
To help commemorate the milestone on Sunday, January 20, 2019 from 6PM – Midnight, the restaurant will serve a special three-course family-style feast priced at $50 per person. Designed to be shared and intended for indulgence, the menu will feature fan favorites as well as some special surprises. For an additional $10 per guest, revelers can add Beltran’s famous foie gras as a middle course. Also available will be a limited a la carte menu with signature items such as the famous Chug burger, fritas, and the famed pastrami-style short rib. Since no celebration is complete without dessert, all diners will be treated to a complimentary slice of Publix birthday cake.
$7 select signature cocktails and a 25% discount on bar will be available. Adding to the fun, Chatchow’s Gio Gutierrez will be on hand, pouring creative concoctions at his own pop-up bar.
The party doesn’t end on Sunday as the celebration will also serve as the official kick-off of its new late-night Happy Hour. Launching on Friday, January 25, 2019, and available every Friday and Saturday henceforth, the new Happy Hour will feature drink specials, late-night bites and a rotating selection of pastelitos by none other than Ariete’s own Pastelito Papi. Featuring the cream of the crop in homegrown talent, the multi-genre concert will be filled with local Visual & Performing Arts activations that highlight the creative communities. These will be complemented by vendors offering a selection of merchandise, food, & drinks that are custom to the culture found down here at the Bottom of the Map. Calling all art and foodie enthusiasts! Naked Taco, located in the prime of South Beach, has teamed up with extremely talented artists and brilliant chefs to bring to life a Food Porn Art Exhibit. It took 3 award winning chefs teaming up with 3 phenomenal artists and 3 stunning influencers to create art pieces that showcase the sexual side of food. Food Porn Art Exhibit features @wallflowe12 Photography by Michael Leoncio, Jay “JBon” Bonadio JR @TheUnsigned, and Peterson Guerrier @Mr_Guerrier joined forces with award-winning Chefs Ralph Pagano, Brad Kilgore, and Max Santiago to create art pieces unlike any other.

Seen through the lens and photographed for the food-meets-art collaboration are influencers Bibiana Julian, TV personality, Astrid Bavaresco and one of Miami’s top females DJ’s, Michelle Pooch. Each photograph went through a process of artistic expressions created by Michael Leoncio @Wall- flowe12, Jay “JBon” Bonadio JR @TheUnsigned, and Peterson Guerrier. All three artists alongside the chefs brought a different and unique aspect to each art piece.

Michael Leoncio, known as @wallflowe12, is well known for tastefully depicting the nude human form with his images of masked nude models. Jbon, also known as “The Unsigned Artist”, has been shaking up the art scene for over a decade while keeping a low profile. Starting as a silk screen artist at the age of 15, he has evolved those skills into an original, luxurious “Neo- Mosaic” shattered glass concept of collections that he creates today. And last, but definitely not least Peterson Guerrier; known for creating artwork on canvases which are unique to properly showcase his style. Using a traditional fine art technique fused with an urban flare my work takes turns speaking jazz in a midnight setting, and bleeding emotions from an animalistic perspective.

Need an excuse to entertain the entire family on a Sunday? Head to Pinecrest Gardens’ award-winning Farmers Market to shop the season’s bounty, to explore the dynamic botanic gardens and to view the Antarctic Ice Paintings: Global Coastlines and Underwater HOA exhibit by prominent environmental artist, Xavier Cortada. While there, visitors can learn about how to become climate change problem-solvers in their community.

Be sure to pick-up an “Underwater HOA” marker artistically designed by Cortada, who has implemented a Miami-Dade County wide participatory art project to coincide with Art Basel. Taking place Friday, December 7, Brightline has partnered with Perrier Jouet and Absolute Elyx to bring riders an evening of champagne, specialty cocktails and nonstop entertainment. New to this edition of The Tasting Train is performances by Miami’s own Karla Croqueta, Charlie Chaplin, live contortionists and DJs all aboard the train. This immersive journey, perfect for lovers of art and luxury spirits, begins in West Palm Beach on board Brightline’s 7 p.m. train, with Perrier Jouet sampling along the entire route to Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

The Tasting Train experience continues with a visual feast upon arrival at Brightline Miami Central Station’s Select Lounge and the signature copper embellishments of Absolute Elyx set against incredible views of Biscayne Bay and the Downtown Miami skyline. This lively reception will feature live music, multiple tasting stations serving Perrier Jouet and signature Absolute Elyx cocktails; carefully selected cuisine options will be served as you enjoy the libations, all included with ticket purchase.

Guests can either return home to Fort Lauderdale or West Palm Beach in comfort via Brightline or choose to stay in Miami and experience all the city has to offer during Art Basel.

Tickets for The Tasting Train, which include the Perrier Jouet tasting on the train and Select Lounge Event are $200 and tickets to attend the Select Lounge event in Miami are $175. All tickets can be purchased via Eventbrite. The Tasting Train departs West Palm Beach at 7 p.m. and Fort Lauderdale at 7:39 p.m., arriving in Miami at 8:14 p.m. for the lounge experience. The return train departs at 9:43 p.m. from Miami Central.

The Confidante Miami Beach, alongside Bird & Bone’s Chef Richard Hales, invite guests to a special spirit pairing dinner monthly. The evening is part of The Confidante’s monthly dinner series aptly named The Confidante Dinner Club, which features a specially curated collaboration with a new spirit brand each month.

Embracing the warm, welcoming and vibrant glamour of The Confidante, the evening will take place in The 1930s House, a private, outdoor Spanish-style bungalow originally built as a one-bedroom family home. Once located across the street from the Collins Avenue hotel, the structure was picked up by crane and relocated to The Backyard at The Confidante, where it currently resides.

The evening features passed hors d’oeuvres and retro-themed welcome cocktails created in partnership with The Confidante’s food and beverage team and master mixologists. Renowned local chef Richard Hales, Chef/Partner of American-inspired on-site eatery Bird & Bone, will showcase a specially curated three-course menu expertly paired with different expressions of the select spirits.

Chef Hales and spirit brand ambassadors will be present to guide guests through the culinary journey, explaining how the flavors of each dish pair with the spirit. After the food and spirits journey, guests will end the evening with a social hour complete with an open bar.

Key Rules of the Event:

Honoring the spirit of collaboration throughout the month of November, KYU will be hosting a one night only exclusive dinner with J. Wakefield Brewing. Both popular establishments in the Wynwood neighborhood, KYU has made a name for itself as a James Beard Nominated local favorite, while J. Wakefield is known among “beer geeks” as the last remaining independently owned craft brewery in the area. The National Hotel, the cinematic Art Deco treasure in the heart of South Beach, is partnering with Neighbors 4 Neighbors, a nationally recognized nonprofit and partner of local broadcast station CBS4, to host Chefs 4 Neighbors, a culinary benefit event to raise funds to support individuals and families with immediate needs. Proceeds from the event will go towards Neighbors 4 Neighbors’ Family Fund and victims of Hurricane Michael through a partnership with Farm Share. The Family Fund program offers financial assistance to otherwise self-sufficient individuals who have an immediate need or emergency, preventing them from entering the cycle of poverty. The Family Fund will purchase supermarket gift cards for families experiencing food insecurity.

“During hard times, people economize by going hungry, and with 37% of Miami-Dade households either in poverty or making ends meet, it is important we host events like these to support those in need in our community, especially true after a natural disaster such as Hurricane Michael,” said Yaser Mohamad, General Manager, National Hotel. “By supporting Neighbors 4 Neighbors’ Family Fund, we are helping restore the financial self-sufficiency of individuals who are willing to work but are temporarily unable to do so or are going through unexpected hardships.”

The Confidante Miami Beach, alongside Bird & Bone’s Chef Richard Hales and Tequila Revolución’s National Sales Director, Adrian Sosa, invite guests to a special tequila pairing dinner on Friday, October 26. The inaugural evening kicks off The Confidante’s new monthly dinner series aptly named The Confidante Dinner Club, which will feature a specially curated collaboration with a new spirit brand each month. Embracing the warm, welcoming and vibrant glamour of The Confidante, the evening will take place in The 1930s House, a private, outdoor Spanish-style bungalow originally built as a one-bedroom family home. Once located across the street from the Collins Avenue hotel, the structure was picked up by crane and relocated to The Backyard at The Confidante, where it currently resides. The evening features passed hors d’oeuvres and retro-themed welcome cocktails created in partnership with The Confidante’s food and beverage team and Tequila Revolución’s master mixologists. Renowned local chef Richard Hales, Chef/Partner of American-inspired on-site eatery Bird & Bone, will showcase a specially curated three-course menu expertly paired with three different expressions of Tequila Revolución.

Chef Hales and Sosa will be present to guide guests through the culinary journey, explaining how the flavors of each dish pair with the tequila. As a 15+ year veteran in the wine and spirits industry, Sosa has represented various prestigious tequila brands such as Patron, Sauza, Cazadores and Partida. After the food and spirits journey, guests will end the evening with a social hour complete with a cigar rolling station and open bar.
