Wynwood at Dark is an essay of urban night photographs showcasing Miami’s vanishing warehouse district. The area dates roughly to Miami’s heyday with the requisite art deco detailing which beautifully complements Daidone’s stark, surreal, dreamlike style and reflects influences of 1940’s film noir and storybook illustrations from the same period.

The second Wednesday of every month is gallery night at Red Bar Gallery. Each month a different artist is featured, and in November the featured artist will be Renda Writer, a “found object artist” who makes art out of things that he finds… an air conditioning vent, a few automobile hubcaps, tons of wood from furniture, some random street signs, and a ceiling tile. All of these objects and more have been repurposed as art by Renda. He writes poems, phrases, adages, affirmations, and repetative statements on them and turns them into what he calls, “handwritten found object art.” He will have over 85 pieces of work on display, and is billing the night as a “blowout sale,” saying that, “no reasonable offer on my art will be refused.”

LA CHIVA GANTIVA starts in Brussels with a group of Colombian percussionists playing together, in order to feel closer to their homeland and its rich musical heritage. Pushed by a desire to assert their roots and reproduce Colombian rhythms of yesteryear, like less well known rhythms such as the «champeta», the «chirimia» and the «mapalé», LA CHIVA GANTIVA uses traditional Caribbean instruments such as «la tambora», «el alegre», «el llamador» and «maracones». LA CHIVA GANTIVA does not stop there, they also incorporate instruments like the bass guitar, the clarinet and the saxophone which reflect the diverse influences of the group: Colombian (with the likes of Toto la Moposina, Lucho Bermudez and Petrona Martinez), Latin (Fania All Stars, Irakere), African (Fela Kuti and Tony Allen), Jazz (Lionel Hampton), Funk (the legendary James Brown) and Rock (Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rage Against the Machine).

The result of this soundclash is a unique musical style and explosive on-stage energy, that has opened their path to many big festivals throughout Europe. Since 2005, La Chiva Gantiva has played in the biggest festivals in Belgium, Portugal, Holland and Germany. La Chiva Gantiva continues to grow and to build upon their compelling and inspiring musical universe.

DJ Le Spam & Spam Allstars blend improvisational electronic elements and turntables with latin, funk, hip hop and dub to create what they call an electronic descarga. It’s not a known genre. It’s hard to describe. It attracts many types of people. But as they look out and see people dancing salsa, next to break-dancers, and festival-goers driving for hours to catch a show — they know something very special is going on.

Spam Allstars were formed by Andrew Yeomanson, a/k/a DJ Le Spam, who was raised in Toronto, Bogota and London, and has called Miami home since 1993. He got his start by playing guitar in Haitian band Lavalas, and recording and touring with Miami based artist Nil Lara. Along the way he added to his vinyl collection, and when off the road he would DJ locally. These DJ gigs evolved into collaborations with live musicians, performing on an internet radio show, recording in his home studio, and the first of many residencies combining his samplers & DJ skills with a live band.

In 2002, Spam Allstars began a weekly residency at Hoy Como Ayer in Little Havana, which continues today. In 2003 they started monthly residencies in New York City, Gainesville, Tampa, Atlanta, and New Orleans, and playing nationally wherever people would host them. Today they perform 200+ shows, and average 56,000 miles each year.

***
How Minis Gone Wild! came to be; New Light Theatre’s Resident Playwright, Artist and Director, Wendy White envisioned a new type of theatre production featuring mini-plays. Wendy often paints in her studio, living by her motto ‘painting a mini a day keeps the doctor away.’ Her initial concept of matching a mini-painting with a mini-play gained momentum and she invited other talented South Florida playwrights to join her; and voila ‘Minis Gone Wild!’ was born. States Wendy White; “I can’t help but to Maximize all the Mini Power by painting minis, singing minis, showing minis, and performing minis!”
Nine new original mini-plays will be performed by the talented cast: Gema Calero, Luis Navarro, Rio Chavarro, Tamara C. Moore-White, Gabriel Villasmil, Jessica Pusceddu, Mario Temes, Robert Hernandez and Julie Kendall.
1) “Hi. I’m Anne and I’m Afraid of Squirrels Biting my Ankles” by Wendy White
2) “The Unusual Suspect…” by Matthew Para
3) “Brunch Soon” by Marla E. Schwartz
4) “Statuesque” by Luis Navarro
5) “Wet Paint” by Wendy White
6) “I Want to Be Your Sculpture” by Wendy White
7) “Vincent’s Room” by Wendy White
8) “Starry Nights and Midnight Chats” by Elaine Alonso-Cruz
9) “Art Deals in Dealers” by Rio Chavarro

The playwright and director, Wendy White has written over 125 one-act plays and was a resident playwright, curator and director at the Kraine Theater in the East Village of New York City from 1984 to 1992, and at the Expanded Arts Theater Company from 1994 to 2001, in the Lower East Side of New York City. Her off-Broadway productions are the basis for her new venue at the New Light Theatre. She recently produced her one woman show; The Jewish Nun to sold-out audiences in Off-Broadway’s 59e59 Theatre and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The New Light Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit public foundation and has won numerous awards around the globe. The theatre company has performed everywhere from Amsterdam to Paris; from Miami to Los Angeles to New York City; and has tackled subjects relating to women, love, politics, and Shakespeare.

Handcrafted Tattoo & Art Gallery Presents

“Up & Away” Alex Yanes Partners With Ink Master’s Chris Nunez For Last Solo Exhibition In Miami At Handcrafted Tattoo and Art Gallery

Coming back from his recent sold-out exhibition at Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles, local favorite Alex Yanes has no signs of slowing down, at least not until after his solo exhibition. Acclaimed artist, Alex Yanes, will present a his last solo exhibition in Miami, entitled “Up & Away“ at Handcrafted Miami during Wynwood’s 2nd Saturday’s Art Walk on Saturday, November 9th. Handcrafted is the brainchild of world-renowned tattoo artist and Spike TV’s Ink Master reality star, Chris Nunez. Nunez has transformed a 3,000 square foot space in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District into an uber hip tattoo parlor and art gallery. Once you walk through the parlor, you enter their gallery space, which also has a garage door leading to their outdoor patio. The multi-use concept combines tattoo enthusiasts love for ink and art.

“I had this concept of an open art space, as much open space as possible because I wanted to break the mold of traditional tattoo shops, the stuffiness and people having to work on top of each other.” He worked closely with designer, Sean Saladino, brother of Pride and Joy owner and designer, Mike Saladino. Chris continues, ”With the gallery, we wanted to do the environment where you go from the warm kind of eclectic reclaimed but comfy feel from the lighting to the floor to the walls.”

Yanes will exhibit new, never-before-seen works, as this will also be his last exhibition in Miami. The 3,000 square foot gallery will house over 20 of his strikingly colorful 2 and 3D mixed media works on wood including his custom, wall-mounted, Bluetooth speaker boxes. Additionally, he will be debuting a brand new customized speaker system created from a 1960’s refurbished speaker console complete with Technics turntables and his signature wood cutouts. Whimsical, yet relatable, Yanes’ art embodies an innovative use of color and imaginative subject matter that has become a staple in Miami’s Wynwood Art District.

Doors will open to VIP’s and collectors privately from 7-8pm and to the public from 8-11pm. Enjoy beats by DJ Rage Johnson and complimentary signature cocktails by Deep Eddy all-natural premium vodka and Perrier® Sparkling Natural Mineral Water.

Dress to kill as “walkers” and other eerie characters, and prepare for the ultimate zombie takeover experience. Presented by Vitamin C Communications, the Reel Horror Ball will be the place to be this Halloween; especially for all of “The Walking Dead” fanatics.

Throughout the evening, multiple DJs will perform and revelers will be able to get a firsthand glimpse of actual props from the hit television show. In addition, there will be various dance rooms for all those walking dead zombies looking for a place to dance the night away. Miami’s Reel Horror Ball 2013 Presents “The Walking Dead” will make for an unforgettable Halloween party.

“The Reel Horror Ball is a Halloween staple in Miami,” said Angel Sanchez, Vitamin C Communications CEO. “We are excited to have AMC as our official sponsor this year which is sure to take the event to the next level, ensuring that the event stays true to the show and impresses the show’s large local following.”

Located in the heart of the Design District at 4040 NE Second Avenue, The Moore Building will be the perfect venue for the haunting event. A silent auction will take place with authentic Walking Dead memorabilia and giveaways, with a percentage of proceeds being donated to support a local charity.

General admission tickets, VIP passes and multiple table packages are already for sale.

For a chance to be featured on the official “The Walking Dead” Facebook page, turn yourself into a Walker with the Dead Yourself app and post it on the Reel Horor Ball Facebook page.

T&C’s regular Sunday brunch menu is available for adults with some additional Halloween treats and drink specials including “True Blood” Bloodies, traditional “Zombie” cocktail, “Dark and Stormys” and more.

In addition, Tongue & Cheek is asking all diners to bring non-perishable, kid-friendly food items including, but not limited to, granola bars, raisins, apple sauce, crackers, macaroni and cheese and canned soups to be donated to Feeding South Florida’s “Backpack Program.” Seeking to fill the void of the necessary nutrients children need to live, learn and play, Feeding South Florida provides backpacks full of food for thousands of low-income children throughout Miami Dade on Friday afternoons. This food nourishes the children on the weekend when other food might not be available. Many times, low-income children don’t eat between leaving school on Friday and the school breakfast on Monday morning. Not only will diners who bring food items in be helping a great cause, they will also receive a special Halloween treat.

FIU Theatre presetns: Sleeping Beauty
by Rufus Norris, Guest Director Margaret M. Ledford

This adaptation of the classic fairy tale is a wildly irreverent treat that will delight children and grown-ups alike. It focuses on Goody, the fairy who puts the famous curse on Beauty and spends the rest of the play trying to make everything turn out all right. Yes, there is a princess who pricks her finger and falls into a magic sleep, but there is also a vicious ogre mother-in-law, and ungrateful queen, and, in the center of it all, a grumpy fairy whose magic comes with stinky gas.

Tickets: $10 Students, $12 Seniors & Faculty/Staff (with ID), $15 General Admission.

Nora Chipaumire Miriam
JANUARY 24-25, 2014

With Miriam, renowned choreographer and dancer Nora Chipaumire creates her first character-driven work — a deeply personal dance-theatre performance that looks closely at the tensions women face between public expectations and private desires, between selflessness and ambition, and between the perfection and sacrifice of the feminine ideal. Inspired by South African singer and activist Miriam Makeba with original music by Cuban pianist Omar Sosa, the work layers text, sound and image that enrich the mysterious and haunting world of Chipaumire’s creation.

The Tiger Lilies
NOVEMBER 1-2, 2013

The Criminal Castrati’s anarchic brechtian blues trio, The Tiger Lillies, are an extraordinary three piece band creating music that is a startling mixture of opera, gypsy song and left bank Paris. Fronted by singer Martyn Jacques who trained himself as an opera singer with a castrati style voice of heartbreaking beauty whilst living alone above a strip joint in Soho for seven years, and accompanied by drummer Adrian Huge and double bass player Adrian Stout. The Tiger Lillies sing savage and passionate songs about prostitutes, drug addicts and losers, their voices soaring and growling like men possessed.

“Foundation of A System”

This SATURDAY at BASE, we are very to welcome Flinch to BASE at Space!

Los Angeles based beat maker Adam Glassco, better known as Flinch, is no stranger to the EDM world. A veteran producer who has progressed effortlessly from his beginnings in drum & bass and then electro, to current endeavors into jump-up and deeper, more melodic synth-based dubstep. The succession of sounds Flinch adheres to reflects a new breed of artists distinguished most by his ability to marry a massive, tear-out bassline with a melody that could serenade your grandmother, or create tracks that pair careful grit & distortion with catchy songwriting. A true tastemaker, Flinch consistently delivers a wide selection of cuts riding between the UK funky, club, moombahton, techno, garage, and dubstep genre lines. There is an undeniable buzz in the bass music world for Flinchʼs recent productions on labels like SMOG and Trouble & Bass records, but most notably the massive “World On Fire,” which has often been championed by Skrillex, 12th Planet, and Datsik and is making a huge impact with audiences worldwide

Also on the decks, RR’s own Johnny Terror and Radamas. Come experience the NEW UNDERGROUND taking place in the BASEment of Club Space!!! Tell your friends to tell their friends, everybody is welcome to experience what goes down in the BASement after dark… #WERAGEHARDER

This Halloween, SUSHISAMBA Miami Beach will forgo traditional party themes and opt for a creative approach to celebrate our favorite fall holiday. On Thursday, October 31 from 7 p.m. – 3 a.m., the restaurant will honor Japanese tradition with its 8th Annual Cosplay Halloween Party. A marriage of the words “costume” and “play”, the iconic Japanese concept of cosplay is the act of dressing up in disguises that depict characters from anime, video games and movies.

When guests enter SUSHISAMBA Miami Beach, Harajuku-themed decorations will transport them immediately to the bustling streets of Tokyo. Taiko drummers, Cirque X dancers, and staff dressed as Geisha girls will add to the evening’s playful, funky ambiance. DJs will spin an intoxicating mix of Japanese pop music and crowd favorites while guests dine, dance and admire outrageous costumes until the wee hours of the morning.

The party will take place both inside and outside the restaurant, with a giant outdoor celebration on Pennsylvania Avenue, mirroring Tokyo’s Harajuku district, where cosplay enthusiasts often gather for photographs and costume contests. Prizes will be awarded for “best costume” and Halloween-themed smoked pumpkin caipirinhas ($12) – made with Mezcal, cachaça, pumpkin purée and muddled lime – will be available, along with complimentary Japanese candies throughout the evening.
