American Social (AmSo), is known for their eclectic selection of craft beers and creative cocktails. Starting in April, the waterfront gastropub is sharing the breadth of their brew knowledge by giving guests the hop-portunity to meet, greet and learn from local breweries while sipping exclusive flavors on tap. On Tuesday, April 21st from 8 to 11 p.m., American Social Brickell is hosting a Funky Buddha tap takeover showcasing South Florida’s largest brewery.

Exclusive taps for the April 21st soiree include Last Snow, a liquid indulgence with flavors of coconut, coffee and white chocolate; More Moro Blood Orange IPA, an American varietal of blood orange with deep, crimson red flesh, a mellow citrus flavor, sticky malt body and long grapefruit hop finish; Fire In The Hole Raspberry Habanero Red Ale, a malty red ale that pops with pleasantly fruity undertones, whole raspberries and just enough habanero peppers to create a pleasant tingle; and Bonita Applebum, made with cinnamon, vanilla and apples with a cinnamon-vanilla aroma for a full, round and beautiful sip. Brewery representatives will be available to educate patrons on craft beers and their Oakland Park facility.

“Learning about beer is just as important as tasting it,” says American Social Partner Paul Greenberg. “Craft beer is a quickly growing segment in our industry and with more than 50 beers to choose from at American Social, we are pushing to educate our patrons on the brewing process and ingredients of the products we serve.”

American Social Brickell features an energetic atmosphere among the crisp downtown skyline, complete with live music, an award-winning menu and perfectly-placed HD-TVs for enjoyment from any seat, both inside and out. Their menu of classic American comfort food and farm-to-table selections is a two-time consecutive winner of South Beach Wine and Food Festival’s Best Bite on the Beach. Sip by the Miami River with complimentary boat dockage.

: Café Prima Pasta is celebrating their love for garlic with $4.19 specials on Sunday, April 19th in conjunction with National Garlic Day. The three “breath-taking,” garlic-infused appetizers priced at just $4.19 include the Bruschetta, flaky Italian bread topped with chopped vine ripened tomatoes, sweet basil and garlic (orig. $9.95); Calamaretti Fritti, crispy calamari fried in a mixture of authentic Italian bread crumbs and robust roasted garlic (orig. $12.95); and Spinach Sautee, tender baby spinach sautéed in zesty garlic served over hearty cannellini beans (orig. $9.95).

If the permeating smell of the restaurant’s garlic force-field isn’t enough to keep patrons safe from Dracula, repellent vampire cocktails are also available, which include the Baby Prima Martini, Dracula Red Bloody Mary, Vampire Vodka Surprise, and Chef Carlos’ favorite Pinot Noir all priced at $4.19 a glass.

Whether people love it or hate it, the health benefits of eating garlic are now universally hailed. A member of the onion family, garlic has been used throughout recorded history for both culinary and medicinal purposes such as lowering blood cholesterol levels and reducing the buildup of plaque in arteries. It has a characteristic pungent, spicy flavor that mellows and sweetens considerably with cooking.

“A little secret; 15 minutes before we open, I take a sizzling hot skillet of sautéed garlic out into the dining room and splash in some Italian white wine letting off an explosion of garlic goodness fill the air,” admits Gerry Cea, founder of his family’s business, Café Prima Pasta. “In addition to being part of our restaurant’s ambiance, the smell serves as a prelude to the handmade specialty pastas, fresh breads and desserts we prepare to order each day.”

Diego Meraviglia, Vice President and Director of Education of the North American Sommelier Association (NASA) and Gold-Pin Sommelier presents a new, 6 hour course that covers the vast majority of wines produced in the Piemonte region; their typicality, classification, history, characteristics and folklore, as well as notions of traditional food pairings and overview of the entire region itself. Tasting of the most representative wine appellations in Piemonte, alongside some hidden gems, is also included. The course is designed to please both the wine enthusiast and professional.

Although often compared to France’s Burgundy, Piemonte has seemed out of reach for many to grasp and remains shrouded in mystery. Meraviglia aims to “lift some of the fog” (so typical of this land) and provide a comprehensive understanding of the culture, food and, most importantly, the wine.

Some Background Information:

The Italian region of Piemonte is widely considered by the wine community as one of the most prominent, historical, unique and significant wine regions of the world, producing such prized wines as Barolo, Barbaresco, Moscato D’Asti, Gavi and Barbera D’Asti, to name a few. With a 3000+ year history rooted in its ancient Celtic heritage, surrounded by some of the most breathtaking mountains on the planet and with mystical towns as unreachable and untouchable as they are seductive, Piemonte continues to inspire and seduce both the wine world and the culinary world, maintaining its prime position as Italy’s number 1 wine region (right alongside Tuscany).

The course costs $270.00 with all included, and a $50.00 discount is offered to current NASA members. To register, visit: http://www.nasommelier.com/courses/italian-wine-specialist/#miami. For information, call 786.427.9187 or email miami@nasommelier.com

This 4 day course plus certification exam is produced by NASA and sponsored by Just Quality Importer Inc. (Miami Beach.) Classes begin on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at Ironside Pizza situated in Miami’s historic Upper East Side, continue through Tuesday, June 30th, and conclude with the exam on Friday, July 31st.

Venezuelan architect, goldsmith and sculptor, Luz María Charlita, presents her latest show, “Nature Redepicted” at Gallery G & S Alternative Space in Hollywood, during the next edition of Downtown Hollywood ArtWalk next Saturday April 18th.
Known for her metalwork interpreting the perfection of nature forms, Luz María Charlita returns to South Florida with this exhibition where the “Ecologic Rains: Green Rains” and Flower Rains” are focal point of this proposal.
Charlita began practicing his career as an architect in 1979, but it was her passion for detail that led her to specialize in interior design and go to work in Spain. There she began to connect with the metal work and goldsmith. As she returned to Venezuela she was devoted to manual work choosing as her material, metal intervened by fire. To these early works she added natural unworked stones like quartz and ammonites (mollusk fossils). Then she began with semiprecious stones and more elaborate pieces resulting in a collection of fine jewelry.
“There comes a time when you realize your jewel becomes larger and has the potential to be a three-dimensional project. This can be a sculpture, a painting, a piece in three dimensions, ” says Charlita. And then is when she takes the next step: metal sculpture Luz Maria also confesses not being afraid of the scale because she worked as an architect. “I had to design from buildings to utilitarian objects”
The Perfect Forms of Nature as a Source of Inspiration
The artistic work of Luz María Charlotte, has evolved not only in relation to the scale and materials but also the forms it represents. She went through an exploratory stage, from the origin of live beings, their forms, their designs and the search for perfection in natural forms such as snail, considered by her, a perfect structure.
She started working spirals and mazes as archaic forms. “The spiral works on its own axis, is progressive, it’s like DNA. It has upward movement and that inner strength of a tornado’s vortex ” she explains. She is also admits being fascinated by the geometry of the labyrinths and mystery it represents.
Metal is her greatest ally. She considers it a very noble material, becoming a truly fascinating element when it is intervened by fire. “Fire is my ally. The experience of working metal under flames at night is unique, especially working with copper. It shows colors almost like a rainbow. It’s almost supernatural “.
Charlita’s work goes from the original trace of the beings on earth through fossil, to more complex forms. In this second stage, she begins to interpret nature in its vegetation form resulting in her “Ecologic Rains: Flower Rains and Green Rains”. “I went from working fossils to designing a flower, but not the flower per se, but the flower inside a rain. It was a repetition work I wanted to do as an installation”.
Luz María returns with her work to Miami because she believes that the city will soon become an important point in the US, thanks to the confluence of cultures and young people that gives movement to the city. “Miami is a city with an impressive artistic thrust. There are a multitude of cultural events. It is already attracting many people, not just summer tourists, also cultural ones, ” she said.

Pinecrest Gardens is the home of a wonderful display of flowers, trees, rock formations and gardens.  In the Garden, there is a large Banyan Tree that is the heart of the Park.  Having grown up in South Miami, Parrot Jungle was one of my favorite parks and remember being able to play among the roots of then a young Banyan.  It is an honor to be able to reflect the beauty of this park through my paintings.

Banyans are considered sacred and it is amazing how these ancient trees are figured so prominently in many cultures. They have used these massive trees as homes and small communities. Even the leaves are considered the resting place of Krishna.

Banyans have a wonderful way of catching the light and there is so much movement of the roots.  They are all so connected it is reminiscent the way life is so connected and intertwined.

All the paintings in this exhibit are specific to Pinecrest Gardens highlighting the Banyan Tree.  Also included are some solution holes, (one 30,000 years old) exotic and tropical plants, flowers and some animals.

Please come to see the park through my eyes in these paintings.

With a magnificent and colorful spectacle the Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida closes its seventeenth season. Its traditional Spring Gala will include the return of Vladimir Issaev’s exciting neo-classical ballet Shostakovich Suites and Vicente Nebrada’s sensous work, Pentimento. The Spring Gala is part of the Broward County Centennial Celebration.

Shostakovich Suites is an exhilarating choreographic piece by Vladimir Issaev, inspired by the music of this Russian composer who was a revolutionary in contemporary composition while suffering the brutal despotism toward talented artists during Stalin’s era. The piece brings all the excitement of the neo-classical dance combined with the extraordinary skills of the Issaev’s dancers at Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida.

Pentimento, created by renowned choreographer Vicente Nebrada, includes excerpts from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Four Suites for Orchestra. Pentimento, a pivotal piece of his repertoire, is a bold, abstract work that is based on the art form of painting of the same name. The artist changes his mind about the composition of his painting during the process, and then changes it. This approach is also applied to ballet: the dance and costumes change throughout the performance. Using masks, floating fabrics and dense lighting, the piece is developed with the presentation of different characters who dance and show the genius of Nebrada. Adding to mystical effects is original costuming by Cristina Gianinni.

These pieces will be performed by the professional dancers of the company where principals Hirofumi Ikeuchi, Lillian Hill, Ramil Bagmanov, Takayuki Asai and Aya Baba have the responsibilities of the main roles. The program showcases the extraordinary skills of Vladimir Issaev’s dancers.

Writing is solitary work – publishing takes a team. This crash-course aims to shed light on the ABC’s of publishing, both via traditional houses and self-publishing. The first half will focus on navigating the realms of traditional publishing, starting with an explanation of the Big 5 houses, mid-size players and independents, and how they all tend to operate. We’ll explore fundamentals such as what is covered in your contract, how to get an agent and what to expect of them, how the buying of rights works, and what to expect from a publisher once you land a deal.
The second half of the course will be dedicated to the basics of self-publishing. We’ll discuss the biggest self-publishing platforms and how to choose the right one for your work, how and when to consult outside professionals before you self-publish, how to monetize your self-published work, and finally, the importance of branding and how to market your work.
Rachel Deahl is a writer and editor with more than ten years of experience covering book publishing. As news director at Publishers Weekly she writes about business trends, technology, self-publishing and rights. She also writes a weekly column about book deals (called Deals), that details the hottest projects being acquired at the major publishers. She is the author of the Publishers Weekly original e-book, Publishing 101, and has been a speaker at various conferences, including SXSW, BookExpo America, Miami Book Fair International and The Frankfurt Book Fair.

Comics and graphic novels have become a medium that allows for all manner of storytelling options and varieties.
In this workshop, we will explore the art of graphic storytelling, and the various techniques employed in telling a visual story. We’ll examine various tools of the trade, and combine all these lessons into creating a short comics story of your own devising, in the subject and format of your choice.
Artists of all levels are welcome — cartooning is not about being able to make a beautiful illustration — cartooning is the art of communicating ideas through your drawings. Think of your drawing style as your handwriting—maybe it’s simple block letters, perhaps it’s a flowery cursive, as long as it can clearly convey your ideas.
Register before April 15 and receive a signed limited edition print from George’s upcoming book, Apollo:The Brilliant God
George O’Connor is the author and illustrator of The New York Times bestselling graphic novel series, Olympians – a projected twelve volume series retelling classical Greek mythology in comics form, one god at a time. The most recent volume, Ares: Bringer of War, is an all-ages comics distillation of The Iliad in 66 pages. In addition to Olympians, George adapted the 1634 journal of Dutch explorer Harmen Meyndertsz van den Bogaert into the graphic novel Journey into Mohawk Country, and was the illustrator of acclaimed playwright Adam Rapp’s first graphic novel Ball Peen Hammer. George is also the author and illustrator of several picture books.

Lony Haley-Nelson notes: “Wonder is valuable… because it leads us to learn and remember.” Using the language and vocabulary of myth, folklore, science, and natural history as inspiration, this generative workshop will help you jump-start the blank page in front of you. We’ll participate in several immersion ideas for poems and journaling (some outdoors, weather permitting) to help you find new ways to revitalize your writing. Our time will be divided into composing drafts; chatting about various myths, articles, essays, and poems; and sharing your own poems in a workshop format. This year we proudly honor Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, Ambassador Simon Ferro and U.S. Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.

The evening will gather Miami Area business and community leaders to celebrate uAspire Miami and its mission to ensure that college is affordable and accessible for all young people. Throughout the night, guests will sip on cocktails courtesy of Bacardi, beer from Biscayne Bay Brewing Company and enjoy delicious tapas and paella while dining al fresco. Unlike other galas, this one promises to be refreshing, as guests sit in lounge furniture and dance away to a live band under the night sky.

Illicit Content features works by a group of artists who vividly demonstrate the blurred line between vandalism and street art. What might be considered illegal, like painting on property without permission, becomes an acceptable art form when it attracts admirers and draws commentary about the revitalization of an area or a shabby building. This is true in Wynwood where passionate artists express their creativity for all to see, often pushing the legal boundaries with their graffiti to the point that some artists have paid with their freedom and even their lives.

This exhibit proudly showcases works with seemingly illicit content demonstrating how perception, creative expression and legality collide.

A New Standard For Urgent Healthcare Centers In South Florida 4/7/15

A New Standard For Urgent Healthcare Centers In South Florida

Miami, Florida 33130

After years of medical practice, Dr. Hossein Joukar envisioned a change in the way the local community receives healthcare. Tired of the clouded, inefficient and frankly, unfair experiences of those seeking medical attention, he set out to build a clinic with the patient in mind. In 2005 the first RiteCare facility was inaugurated and Dr. Joukar made sure that his establishment embodied the ideals that have governed his own medical career.
Starting an urgent/walk-in care facility seemed the most logical fit. Urgent cares are convenient alternatives to traditional healthcare facilities. As opposed to traditional primary providers, appointments are not necessary to receive attention, and they are available 7 days a week, with longer operating hours. Before urgent care, the only other option for families experiencing minor conditions such as cold and flu, sprains, minor burns and infections, was to rush over to a crowded hospital emergency room. These visits not only lasted long and uncomfortable wait times, sometimes up to 8 hours, but also cost a substantial amount of money, no matter the insurance provider. Urgent care centers like RiteCare have facilitated the treatment of non-life threatening conditions by seeing patients quickly and efficiently.
“It was important to provide a space for patients to feel confident in the care they are receiving, as well as the price they are paying,” said Dr. Joukar. “We are advocates for fair costs and transparency when it comes to billing. Our patients, insured or not, know exactly what will be charged before any procedure is performed.”
From the moment a patient arrives at any of the four RiteCare facilities, they can expect the utmost level of service performed by any of the board-certified physicians currently on call. In addition to urgent care medical services, RiteCare also provides a variety of services including primary care, physical therapy, school or sports related physical examinations, travel and seasonal vaccinations and immigration physicals. Employers can also count on RiteCare to provide drug testing, occupational medicine/therapy and work-related physical examinations.

Blueshift Wynwood is pleased to announce Andrew Levitas: Metalwork Playground, the artist’s first solo exhibition in Miami. Levitas, known for his meticulously handcrafted photo-sculptures developed through his patented/trademarked process Metalwork Photography®, has produced a new body of work consisting of recreational playground equipment.
Driven by the desire to express his inner vision in a highly personalized medium, Levitas encourages dialogue on the most pressing concerns of our times: dramatic shifts in America’s political and economic strength, technology and our quest for simplicity, and the rapid depletion of wilderness. Levitas creates an inviting experience through the lens of easily recognized forms (seesaws, swing sets, and merry-go-rounds) and the most cherished and happiest of experiences – childhood playtime that can also translate to adult environments. To further complicate this discussion, the sculptures are crafted following the strictest of design principles in gleaming polished chrome. Their sleekness hints at our need for perfection, immediacy, and our impatience in finding lasting resolutions.
Levitas, who is also a filmmaker and writer, began his fine art practice as a painter and photographer. Finding the medium of photography personally limiting, he developed Metalwork Photography®, a process involving the transfer of photographs onto custom transparencies that are in turn melted onto hand etched metal sheets creating a highly reflective surface. Levitas’s installations take this technique one-step further and are comprised of multi- paneled interlocking metal sheets. Built to scale, the playground equipment sculptures, just like his photographs, can be displayed indoors or outdoors and are completely functional art objects.
Born in New York City, Levitas received his BA from NYU where he currently teaches courses on the creative process. In 2008, the artist was accepted to the prestigious Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, which concluded with an exhibition at the Louvre. In addition to a growing list of American and international exhibitions, his work has garnered attention through top auction houses, museums, and art fairs. Recent highlights include the first ever solo exhibition at Phillips Berkeley Square, London. Levitas also recently wrote and directed the feature film Lullaby staring Garrett Hedlund, Academy Award Nominees Amy Adams, Richard Jenkins, Terrence Howard, Anne Archer, and Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson. Levitas maintains studios in London, New York and Los Angeles and continues to expand on ideas of engagement and creative expression.

The Annual South Beach Comedy Festival returns to Miami Beach Wednesday, April 8th to Saturday, April 11th, for another fantastic comedy event featuring some of the world’s funniest entertainers. Now in its tenth year, the South Beach Comedy Festival continues to solidify its place as one of the premiere comedy festivals for top comedic talent and fans across the country.

This year’s event features Dave Chappelle,Bill Burr, Hannibal Buress, Mark Normand, Patton Oswalt and Michael Yo. Tickets are on sale through: www.southbeachcomedyfestival.com, www.livenation.com, the Fillmore Box Office, all TicketMaster outlets or charge-by-phone: 1-800-745-3000.

SBCF and Live Nation, the Festival producer, welcome back The Miami Beach Visitors and Convention Authority for their tenth consecutive year along with sponsor Miami.com. Once again the Festival will utilize multiple locations to highlight its exciting variety of talent. Acts will perform at the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theatre and the unique Gleason Room BACKSTAGE at the Fillmore.

Popular comedian Dave Chappelle will be performing three shows at the intimate Fillmore Miami Beach as part of the Tenth Annual South Beach Comedy Festival.

Thursday, April 9th / 7:30PM, Patton Oswalt takes the stage at the Fillmore Miami Beach. Patton continues to find success in all areas of entertainment, from his Grammy-nominated comedy albums to his many memorable guest roles on his favorite TV shows (including Parks and Recreation, for which he received a TV Critics Choice Award). Additionally he has appeared on Justified, Two and a Half Men, Portlandia, and Burn Notice and also voiced characters on The Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers. He was a series regular on Showtime’s United States of Tara, appeared as a guest star on Bored To Death and Flight of the Conchords on HBO and The Sarah Silverman Program on Comedy Central. Reserved Seat Tickets are $39.50 and $35.00.

Bill Burr performs Friday, April 10th / 8PM on the main stage at the Fillmore Miami Beach. Having first gained notoriety for his recurring role on the second season of Chappelle’s Show, Bill developed a comedic style of uninformed logic that has made him a regular with Letterman, Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Fallon. One of the most popular comedy podcasts on the web, Bill’s Monday Morning Podcast, is an off- the-cuff weekly rant that has become a fan favorite. Bill began the podcast in May of 2007 and has produced over 350 episodes. Bill is against organized religion and believes we should go back to the gold standard for our currency. None of his opinions are based on any sort of reliable information. He tends to go with his first thought, because reading makes him sleepy. In the near future Bill hopes to have some kids. But until then, he will continue to spend most of his mid-afternoons sitting in his sweatpants learning AC/DC songs on his SG. Reserved Seat Tickets are $49.50 and $37.50.

Mark Normand appears Friday, April 10th / 8PM in the Gleason Room Backstage at the Fillmore. Mark is a biting, smart comedian based in New York City. Mark was a semifinalist on NBC’s Last Comic Standing, his Comedy Central Presents: THE HALF HOUR special premiered last year, and his debut CD Still Got It was released last summer. Mark now does comedy clubs and colleges across the country and has been involved in many festivals and was featured as a New Face at the Montreal Comedy Festival, where he recorded a set for Canadian TV. In NYC Mark now runs two comedy shows and two podcasts, Hot Soup, a weekly show, We’re all Friends Here, a live show also recorded as a podcast, and Tuesdays with Stories!, a podcast from Stand Up NY Labs. General Admission Tickets are $20.00.

Hannibal Buress holds court on Saturday, April 11th / 8PM at the Fillmore Miami Beach. Hannibal is a wildly popular Emmy and WGA Award nominated comedian, writer and actor who The New York Times praises as having an “irresistible” comedic presence that lands squarely between “cerebral and swagger.” He is a cast member on the hit Comedy Central series Broad City and is the co-host of Adult Swim’s The Eric Andre Show. Hannibal’s highly-rated second hour standup special Hannibal Buress Live from Chicago premiered on Comedy Central, with GQ declaring “He makes us ugly laugh. Hard.” Hannibal has been featured on several comedy-fan favorite TV shows including FX’s Louie, Fox’s Bob’s Burgers and The Mindy Project, Comedy Central’s Kroll Show, and Adult Swim’s China, IL. He has written for NBC’s Saturday Night Live as well as 30 Rock, where he also appeared on camera several times. He is a regular on the late night TV circuit, with appearances on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show with David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Conan, and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Reserved Seat Tickets are $36.50.

Michael Yo performs Saturday, April 11th / 8PM in the Gleason Room Backstage at the Fillmore. The self-proclaimed “Half-Black Brother with a Korean Mother,” was born and raised in Houston and got his radio start in Austin at the popular central-Texas station, 96.7. He also worked in radio in Houston before moving to his other “hometown” of Miami, where he manages to stay dedicated to his Michael Yo Show on Miami’s Y100. Michael made his debut on E! in 2008 as a Host and Reporter for E! News. Michael was a regular panelist on Chelsea Lately’s round table and he can still be seen on EXTRA. General Admission Tickets are $25.00.

Once again, Mad Cat Theatre Company kicks off the Festival for the 5th time on Wednesday, April 8th / 8:30PM in the Gleason Room Backstage at the Fillmore with their production of Earthquake. Lust. Adultery. Greed. Just another day in the office for a Pulitzer Prize winning playwright chasing his glory days of two decades past. After writing a new “hard hitting, important” play, Trevor Winston has his eye set on Broadway again and in the process, finds himself compromising his work for all the wrong reasons. Can an artist survive in a world fueled by personal gain and greed? Or will he just swim in stride with the sharks? Earthquake may just shake up Broadway after all. This is a fundraiser for the Company and tickets are $60.00 (VIP) and $30.00 General Admission and $15.00 Industry and Student tickets available the day of the show at the Box Office.

Tickets are on sale Friday, February 27th at 10AM through www.southbeachcomedyfestival.com, www.livenation.com, the Fillmore Miami Beach Box Office, all TicketMaster outlets or charge by phone: 1-800-745-3000.

All dates, acts and ticket prices are subject to change without notice. All tickets are subject to applicable taxes, parking and service and handling charges.

Her work is all about movement, energy and capturing fleeting moments. Her work is all about life. Her work is all about you.

Amy D. Ronner, PhD, JD, is a Professor of Law at St. Thomas University School of Law in Miami, Florida, where she teaches Constitutional Law, Wills and Trusts, and Criminal Procedure. In addition to her law degree from the University of Miami, she has a PhD and an MA in English Language and Literature from the University of Michigan. Ronner is also the author of several books on topics like law, literature and therapeutic jurisprudence, appellate practice, LGBT rights, and English literature. One of her books, Homophobia and the Law (American Psychological Association Books, 2005), was the recipient of an academic book award. Dr. Ronner has also published more than forty articles dealing with Dostoevsky, literature, law, therapeutic jurisprudence, criminal procedure, human rights, constitutional rights, and LGBT rights. The frailty of Miami Beach as a barrier island is the subject of the Bass Museum of Art’s new addition to its series tc: temporary contemporary.

Visual and performance artist Reed van Brunschot collaborated with Francisca Twiggs, a painter who works as commercial display artist and fabricator, to create I”t’s Like the River, De Nile.” The work is installed in the storefront windows of the Walgreen’s store located at the corner of Collins Avenue and 23rd Street, along a popular pathway to the public beach. Using set design and analog stage tricks, everyday objects and shoreline detritus make up a narrative installation that is both whimsical and eerily foreboding.

“Apocalyptic flooding has been depicted throughout the history of art,” said Jose Carlos Diaz, Bass Museum of Art Curator of Exhibitions. “Twiggs and van Brunschot have given us their own interpretation of this subject in light of 21st century global warming.”

“Our intention is to utilize this location’s storefront to sell the idea of ‘The Great Flood’, a theme approached throughout history in the arts as something destructive yet cleansing, beautiful yet violent and principally, a subject that is so very relevant however lamentably taboo here in South Florida. There is a level of absurdity in the political dismissal of even using the words “climate change”. It is these dualities in this very current social topic that has brought on the inspiration for the artwork and it’s title.” says Artist Reed van Brunschot.

Reed van Brunschot received her BFA from the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 2011 and has exhibited and performed internationally. In 2014, her work was seen in Miami at Primary Projects and Locust Projects at NADA Fair; and Galeria Logo in Porto Alegre in Brazil. She was also a fellow in both Cannonball and the Artist in Residence in the Everglades residency program.

Francisca Twiggs received her BFA in painting from the University of Miami in 2008 and currently works as the Senior Display Coordinator for Anthropologie in Miami, FL.
