elrow’art – Kaos Garden 12/6/19

elrow’art – Kaos Garden
Friday, 12/06/2019 – 12/07/2019 09:00 pm – 03:00 pm
Art Basel
1901 Convention Center Drive,
Miami Beach, Florida 33139
Website
Cost: General Admission: USD 35.0

The theme of this first elrow’art event is called Kaos Garden. We will witness the reinterpretation of Bosch’s “The Garden of Earthly Delights,” by the DJ and producer Paco Osuna and the multidisciplinary artist Okuda San Miguel. It is a collaboration between the two conceived as a trip through a night that will represent the dynamics of the historic triptych in which we see scenes of paradise and hell. In Kaos Garden, a unique hell will be the starting point. Darkness will represent the night until reaching ecstasy. The paradise will be associated with fun and hedonism with the light of the first hours of the morning in such a mystical and idyllic setting inside a beautifully built structure located at Miami’s exquisite Island Gardens. “We’re so excited and proud of elrow’Art and can’t wait to bring it to Art Basel, a perfect destination for art lovers and music fans to experience this unique multisensory collaboration,” says Michael Julian, Special Advisor to elrow.

“Introducing elrow’art in Miami during Art Basel is a very special event for me. It means bringing the art enthusiasts to a party where they can experience my universe from an unusual perspective. Moreover, the union of art and music really interests me due to the importance that the latter has in my life”. – Okuda San Miguel

Paco Osuna will be the sonic curator and spiritual guide who will select the rhythms that will draw the sound landscape to mark the route from hell to Eden. Okuda’s unique iconographic language of multicolored geometric structures and patterns that have made him one of the world’s most recognizable street artists of today will be on full display, right down to elrow’s signature confetti. He will recreate the surreal, chaotic and multisensory scene of a garden that will unleash emotions and human free will.

100 SW 9th Avenue,
Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33312

The Salvation Army of Broward County is looking for several good men and women to b-“ring” in the cheer and charity this holiday season! South Florida residents with a positive outlook and an affinity for philanthropy and fun are encouraged to apply for a seasonal bell ringer position with The Salvation Army of Broward County on Wednesday, October 30, from 1 – 3 p.m., at the Salvation Army’s headquarters at 100 SW 9th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. Approximately 125 positions need to be filled.

Synonymous with the Christmas season, “ringing the bell” at a Salvation Army Red Kettle has been a tradition since 1895. It’s not just about ringing a bell, however. All proceeds from the Kettle stay in Broward County and support the Salvation Army’s feeding, shelter and social service programs. Last year, the nonprofit organization raised more than $120,000 for the Greater Fort Lauderdale community.

Applicants are encouraged to be creative through song, dance or other spirited presentations that demonstrate enthusiasm and a willingness to help others. Bell Ringers will be selected for employment for the holiday period of November 15 – December 24.

The Red Kettle Bell Ringers program is only part of the nonprofit organization’s holiday efforts to help those less fortunate. This November, the organization will, again, host free Thanksgiving meals in partnership with The Cheesecake Factory for hundreds of families. Last year’s Angel Tree Program provided the opportunity to distribute more than 3,000 toys to families with diminished resources.

Guest Article: The Centennial of the Women’s Right to Vote is Celebrated with a new “Unfinished Business” exhibit curated by Dr. Lynette Long In Miami Beach’s Miami Design Preservation League” by Angela Shlyakhov, President of Anzhelika Productions

“Anything you can do, I can do better.

I can do anything better than you.” – “Anything You Can Do” is a song composed by Irving Berlin for the 1946 Broadway musical “Annie Get Your Gun.”

And, indeed, through her tireless efforts for bringing Women’s achievements throughout the decades to our forefront, Dr. Lynette Long has. Dr. Long has celebrated women’s achievements by honoring women through Historical Markers and Statues.

Dr. Long is a licensed psychologist and former college professor. She has published more than twenty-five books and dozens of articles and has written two award-winning plays. A math education expert, she is particularly interested in the math achievement of young girls. Long coined the phrase “latchkey children” with her husband Thomas Long and wrote the bestselling “Handbook for Latchkey Children and Their Working Parents.” She is President and Founder of the not-for-profit: Equal Visibility Everywhere.

Dr. Long, with the help of her longtime creative assistant Connor Grill, have created the only South Florida exhibit that celebrates the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote. The passage marked the largest expansion of democracy in the history of our country.

The exhibit is titled “Unfinished Business: The Fight for Suffrage & Beyond.” The educational and interactive exhibit will have a 3 month run from December 1, 2019 to April 1, 2020 at the Miami Design Preservation League located at 1001 Ocean Drive in Miami Beach, Florida.

Q&A with curator Dr. Lynette Long

Q: What motivated you to create your “Unfinished Business” exhibit?
A. Dr. Lynette Long
Before the passage of the 19th Amendment which granted women the right to vote women had a very limited ability to own property or to keep their own wages. They were barred from many colleges and professions. Most importantly women had no say in the laws that governed them. The suffragettes risked their lives, endured torture and imprisonment in their 72-year lomg fight for the right to vote. They deserve to have heir story told and to be honored.

Q. Why did you name your exhibit “Unfinished Business?”
A. Dr. Lynette Long
I entitled the exhibit “Unfinished Business” because the fight for women’s equality is far from over. Women are under-represented in Congress and there has never been a woman president or vice-president. Women are often paid less than men for the same work. The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) which guarantees women equality was never ratified.

Q: Your daughter recently gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Sienna, your only granddaughter. What do you want Sienna to appreciate and learn from the these fearless women who gave up so much 100 years ago?
A: Dr. Lynette Long
I want her to learn never to give up fighting for what is fair and true. That a few brave women can change the world and to never settle for less that what is rightly hers.

Straight from Mika’s kitchen you can expect over 7 new menu items. Brunch wouldn’t be complete without live music. Caja Caliente will have live old school Cuban funk and jazz music playing from 12-3 on Saturday’s and 11:30-3:00 PM on Sunday’s.

Taking place on Thursday, November 14 at 7PM, the one-night-only, 30-person dinner will transform Toro Toro’s striking Matador Room into an intimate dining experience that will serve as an exclusive celebration of the season. Priced at $75 per person (excluding tax and gratuity), tickets will include a welcome cocktail in the restaurant’s lounge upon arrival, followed by a 3-course family-style meal with respective wine pairings. The menu for the event will begin with appetizers including Apple & Carrot Curry Soup; Baby Beet Salad with baby kale, green beans and Stracciatella; Pork Belly with corn bread and carrots; and Kabocha Squash with mushrooms, truffle aioli and parmigiano. For the main course, Chef Sandoval will be preparing a traditional Roasted Turkey with a Pan-Latin twist as it will be served with sweet potato bravas, jalapeño honey butter and kimchi Brussels sprouts. Additional entrées will include Achiote Chicken with arroz con gandules, piquillo peppers, tostones and cilantro sauce; and Pork Pernil with mashed yuca, chicharron and red onion mojo. A sweet ending to the night will feature desserts such as Chocolate Caramel Pecan Pie and Maduros Cream Pie.

500 17th Street,
Miami Beach, Florida 33139

A discussion on the necessity of love as a unifying force in our communities and in our world will be the central theme of the next AFRIKIN® Talks. There is a need for an exchange — discussion that crosses boundaries and utilizes a new vocabulary on the importance of strengthening ourselves, our families and our communities on the basis of love — Universal Love is The Way Forward. The faces of our planet now reveal amalgams of ethnicities that reflect our indigenous past and expanding future as seen in the rise of such modern cultures as Afro-LatinX …

AFRIKIN® Talks’ Art of Conversation brings together speakers that reverberate the voices of previous leaders who faced historical turning points in their struggle for equal rights, love, justice, respect and unity.  Family members of Marcus Garvey, Kwame Nkrumah and Haile Selassie step forward into the present with other innovators and thinkers for the artful introduction of this new dialogue at this crucial time in human history when divisions must be removed for those making an effort to survive and proceed onward.

Our way forward now begins as we gather to contemplate the rebuilding of not only one Africa, the communities of the African Diaspora but the entire human family. Bob Marley sang, poignantly in his plead for mankind to have “One love, one heart, let’s get together and feel alright”.

We must remain in service to humanity. This event honors and pays respect to all of us — our families and those who came before us — bringing us all together at a milestone in the journey toward the future -– from “tears to triumph,” We invite you to an artful introduction to a shift in reality during Miami Art Week / Art Basel for AFRIKIN® Talks’ – Art of Conversation.

Bayfront Holiday Village — A Bustling Wonderland Filled with Brilliant Lights, Shopping, Food and Entertainment Awaits in Downtown Miami

Bayfront Holiday Village Brings Daily Christmas Tree Lights Shows, Waterfront Roller-Skating, Local Vendors, Nightly Music and Top Food and Drink Offerings

Downtown Miami’s iconic Bayfront Park will transform into the magical Bayfront Holiday Village offering free, family-friendly programming all season long. Guests of all ages will enjoy daily 50 ft. Christmas tree LED light shows, waterfront roller-skating by Bayskate, over 50 local vendors, festive music and al fresco food and drinks.

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, locals and tourists alike will come for the weather, but stay for great shop-ping, entertainment and Miami’s version of a tropical winter wonderland.

“We know that New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles have pop-up holiday villages. We wanted to create a village where people would gather their loved ones and join in on some holiday cheer. Of course, we have something that the rest of the nation envies – our weather,” said Tony Albelo, event creator and CEO at SWARM.

Organizers want people to envision a quaint, picture-perfect, holiday outdoor venue filled with twinkling lights against Miami’s downtown skyline and waterfront Biscayne Bay. The picture-perfect, outdoor, holiday venue will be filled with twinkling lights and larger-than-life displays worthy of capturing the moment and posting it on Insta-gram.

“The only thing missing out of this Hallmark-perfect scene will be the frigid snow, but that’s why we invite our neighbors from the north to come here to enjoy Bayfront Holiday Village, Miami-style,” added Albelo.

Every night, a fully decorated, 50-foot state-of-the-art, animated Christmas Tree will feature hourly LED light shows sequenced to three different festive musical shows produced by Grammy-winning producer A.T. Molina.

New York has The Rink at Rockefeller Center, but Miami’s answer to cold-weather ice skating is Bay Skate, where adults and children can boogie to the beat of freestyle, tropical, contemporary pop and more. In the Northeast, peo-ple are ice skating and sipping hot cocoa wearing parkas. In Miami, we roller skate and sip mojitos in shorts. The Shops will offer a collection of 60 artisans in a jovial setting, each offering unique gift ideas to check off the “nice” list! Foodies will delight their senses at Bayfront Bites, where they’ll find seasonal beverages, sweet treats and food ga-lore!

The adventurous will participate in the Gnauhty Gnome Scavenger Hunt as they navigate Bayfront Park using guidebooks with clues to solve this year’s puzzle. Even fur babies will have a place of their own to hang out with free treats at the Santa Paws Dog Park, and every Sunday they’ll have Puppy Brunch!

Cirque du Soleil is coming to Miami with the revival of Alegría, its most iconic production. From December 20, 2019 – January 26, 2020, audiences are invited under the Big Top next to Hard Rock Stadium to fall in love with timeless Alegría; a true Cirque du Soleil classic reinterpreted through today’s creative lens.

A production destined to change the history of the company, Cirque du Soleil first presented Alegría in April 1994, launching an emblematic show that was to win over more than 14 million spectators in 255 cities in 19 years of touring through the end of 2013. The show’s theme song, which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1995 and continues to be a fan favorite, is the most listened-to Cirque du Soleil song on YouTube.

In light of its 25th anniversary, Cirque du Soleil is revisiting its legendary Alegría through today’s lens—including new costumes and set design, a renewed acrobatic vocabulary, and new musical arrangements —to ensure it is as inspiring now as it was at the time of its creation in 1994. With its signature songs, stunning acrobatics, memorable characters and enchanting artistry that have helped define the Cirque du Soleil aesthetic, Alegría is the reincarnation of a classic, reinterpreted for the age, and rekindled to inspire fans—old and new alike.

More about Alegría
Beloved by fans around the world, Alegría (‘joy’ in Spanish) is returning to the Big Top once more to share its timeless story of resilience and hope. The classic power struggle of old-meets-new has been reinterpreted through today’s lens. Carried by an intangible wind of change, an emerging movement strives to shake the established order, instilling hope and renewal to bring light and harmony to their kingdom in decay. With its joyful spirit, Alegría is a vital, energizing force driven by a thirst for a brighter world.

Two rare, pre-17th century, stained-glass panels depicting the Holy Family’s Flight Into Egypt are on permanent display at the Deering Estate beginning October 19th. The historic significance of these pieces cannot be overstated, as very few stained glass representations of religious art from this period have survived centuries marked by the ravages of war, political upheavals and natural deterioration. Of the stained-glass panels from that era that have survived, there are only 14 other pieces on public display in Florida. Admission to the 450-acre estate is $15 for adults; $7 for children (ages 4-14); Military and seniors receive a $2 discount on Tuesdays, and Deering Estate Foundation members admitted free. The Deering Estate is located at 16701 SW 72nd Avenue, Palmetto Bay, FL 33157. Open 10 am till 5 pm. Satellite Beach Blues takes place along the Space Coast of Florida in an unspecified moment in the very near future: a transgender woman living in a cheap hotel on Florida’s Space Coast observes life in the state from the very shores where rising seas are slowly inundating the state. For this appearance at MOCA, Erica Dawn Lyle will be performing an experimental lecture in which she will read from the novel while edited sequences and soundscapes from the film-in-progress play on the big screen behind, offering a dreamlike consideration of gender transition, Florida’s legacies of colonization and real estate speculation, and the magical realist possibilities of transcendence beyond capitalism through queer lived experience. In response to the slow motion environmental collapse of Lyle’s native Florida, collaborator, Midnight Piper Forman, and Lyle (working together collectively under the name, SOBBETH) have for the past three years undertaken an ongoing multi-part exploration of the ruins of the Sunshine State’s post-war 20th century mythology.

South Florida native, Erica Dawn Lyle, is a writer, musician, and curator who lives in New York City. She is the author of On The Lower Frequencies: A Secret History of The City (Soft Skull, 2008), and her writing has appeared in Art in America, Artforum, Frieze, and on NPR’s This American Life. Since 1991, she has edited and self-published the DIY art/crime/punk magazine, SCAM. Her most recent book is Streetopia (Brooklyn, 2015). Currently she plays guitar in the bands, Bikini Kill and AquaShade.

The Coral Gables Museum and Oolite Arts are pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition Retra-Tablos: Reclaiming Culture and Ancient Textile Art that will be on view at the Museum’s Community Meeting Room from November 1st to November 17, 2019. The project was conceived by Aurora Molina and Alina Rodriguez, recipients of the Oolite Arts Creator Awards 2018.

Reclaiming Traditional Textile Arts from Guatemala

Retra-Tablos gathers a group of portraits by seventeen artists, ages 6 to 12. Every image narrates an immigrant child’s story embedded in their Mayan ancestry, legend, folklore, and his/her assimilation as recent migrant, or as a child of immigrant parents.
By combining Mayan deities, symbols, Catholic iconography, and American pop culture, the works relate to the aesthetics of the Catholic “retablos” tradition. A retablo is a framed votive painting that forms part of the Catholic altar. Its iconography was often adopted by the peoples colonized by Spaniards and turned into bright, vibrant folk art of their own.

Also on view in the gallery are backstrap woven and embroidered replicas of the young artists’ drawings created by artisans from the collective of women weavers Trama Textiles, in Guatemala.

A Year of Collaborations

Retra-Tablos is the product of a year-long arts-in-education program. For this project, Molina and Rodriguez worked with immigrant children from The Guatemalan-Maya Center in Lake Worth, Florida, in coordination with its school director, Xiomara Guerra.
By collecting and documenting the cultural narratives of Mayan children and highlighting the textile arts and huipiles of Guatemala, Retra-Tablos also pays homage to the memory of Policarpia Gaspar, co-founder of the center. Mrs. Gaspar was a Guatemalan civil war exile who devoted her life to helping refugee children and families. She passed away on this May, 2019 after a lifetime of social work.

Artist Aurora Molina has also joined efforts with Americans for Immigrant Justice and Bernice Steinbaum Gallery to exhibit a large quilt in process titled Sew America (So America Cares): Immigration Quilt. The quilt raises awareness on the current state of immigration and shines light on the increase of child death, deportation and detention. Each appliqued panel by artists, teachers, children and adults is rendered in textiles and feature the silhouetted face of a deported child in the US. The quilt will continue to grow as more artists and individuals contribute to making more panels.

In addition, Sharon Smith, composer with La Chance Music has produced a musical piece with a video production by Director Fina Torres and Producer Esther Levin with Jacaranda Producciones exclusively to complement the show. The project documentation video is produced by Damian Rojo.

Activities at the Coral Gables Museum

The Grand Opening of Retra Tablos, on Friday, November 1st, 6-10pm will be in conjunction with Coral Gables Gallery Night. It will include interactive presentations on backstrap weaving. There will be live music by students of the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music and a cash bar. This event is brought to you by the Coral Gables Museum on the First Friday of every month.
Admission is free!

More activities related to the show will be offered during the Museum’s Family Day, on Saturday, November 9, 2019, 2-5 pm. Come and learn about the backstrap weaving textile arts of Guatemala; create paper embroidery; make simple weavings; and be creative using Mayan patterns on coloring book pages to make a self-portrait. There will be live marimba musical performances by students from Miami-Dade County Public Schools and more! Admission is also free.

ULI is a global, multidisciplinary real estate organization whose work is driven by 45,000-plus members dedicated to responsible land use and building thriving, sustainable communities.

The Advisory Services panel is being conducted in conjunction with the 10-Minute Walk Campaign, a national movement striving to ensure that residents of urban neighborhoods throughout America have access to a high-quality park within a ten-minute walk from their homes. The 10-Minute Walk Campaign, which has been endorsed by over 230 mayors, involves a partnership between the Urban Land Institute, The Trust for Public Land, and the National Recreation and Park Association.

The ULI representatives, convened through ULI’s renowned Advisory Services Program, will be visiting the city October 13-18. Sponsored by the Fort Lauderdale Downtown Development Authority, the Advisory Services panelists will consider:

How to develop a new vision for Huizenga Plaza, including new uses, programming design and operational management, along with identifying funding mechanisms and a recommended implementation strategy to support this vision;
What criteria is necessary for the acquisition and development of new park space downtown, along with a strategic decision-making process;
Identifying outreach strategies and partnerships to help gain strong public support for changes and improvements to existing park space; and
How the public and private sector can work together to explain the benefits for property owners and developers to participate in a public parks program.
On Friday, Oct. 18, the public is invited to hear the panel’s recommendations at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts from 9-10:30 a.m.
