As Cotopaxi spews ash, issuing an eerie penumbra over Quito and threatening to erupt, a young woman confronts dormant familial conflicts in Ecuadorian writer-director Juan Sebastián Jacome’s poignant new drama.
Desperate for a place to store her things as volcanic disaster looms, Caridad turns to her long-estranged Galo father for help. Galo abandoned Caridad’s mother long ago and is eager to make amends, but questions concerning the nature of his transgressions linger, straining communication between father and daughter and casting grave doubts over the possibility of reconciliation.
Alternating between the stunning spectacle of Cotopaxi and the uneasy intimacy of Caridad and Galo’s reunion, Cenizas deftly balances the grandiose and the personal, juxtaposing events beyond our control with matters that can only be resolved by having the courage to break the silence and reach out.

Havana Club Rum Presents “Amparo” – A Private, One-Night-Only Immersive Theatrical Experience 2/28/18

Havana Club Rum Presents “Amparo” – A Private, One-Night-Only Immersive Theatrical Experience

Miami, Florida 33135

Cost: Free, Private Event and By Invitation Only

On February 28th at Ball & Chain, HAVANA CLUB rum will host the first-ever, private showing of the “Amparo” performance in Miami.

HAVANA CLUB rum recently launched its “Forever Cuban” campaign to uphold the authenticity of the rum’s Cuban heritage and assert its rightful place as the original HAVANA CLUB rum. To further affirm HAVANA CLUB rum as “Forever Cuban,” the brand is tapping into its heritage and retelling the story behind the original creators of the renowned rum with an immersive theatrical experience, aptly titled “Amparo.”

“Amparo” will transform attendees into travelers, complete with Cuban visas and travel guides, and transport them to the truth of the HAVANA CLUB story, beginning in pre-revolution Cuba in 1957 and concluding in modern day Miami. It is a story of industry and innovation, tragedy and betrayal, redemption and reclamation that many Cuban exiles have faced.

Along the journey, travelers will experience pivotal moments in the Arechabala family story that have defined the exiled rum brand. These emotionally charged scenes will unveil, for the first time, not only the injustices that the Cuban regime performed against the Arechabala family, but also the family’s long legacy. A legacy that the government tried to erase, but which history has recorded.

Most importantly, travelers will follow Ramon Arechabala, who managed to take his family’s rum recipe with him, out of Cuba. Ramon shared that recipe, along with the Arechabala family’s legacy, with Bacardi to ensure a future for what his family had made and what had been stolen from them. With “Amparo,” Bacardi is committed to honoring that legacy.

Friday, February 23, from 8-9:15 PM: The Bobby Thomas Jr Quintet: Two-time Grammy Award nominee Robert “Bobby” Thomas Jr. has wowed audiences around the globe for more than three decades. Widely considered one of the most important percussionists in music history, his lightning-fast hands and percussive pyrotechnics prompted the great Joe Zawinul to bestow upon him the title of “Hand Drummer.”

After graduating from high school, Thomas studied at Miami-Dade Community College. During this time, he discovered jazz, and began to play with saxophonist Jet Nero at the Gold Dust lounge and other artists including Ira Sullivan, Billy Marcus, Zoot Sims, Thad Jones, Monty Alexander and Mel Lewis. In the late 70s, Thomas played at a benefit with Jaco Pastorius in Miami Springs. Soon afterward, Thomas auditioned with Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter’s jazz fusion group Weather Report at a live performance in New Haven, Connecticut.

Bobby played with Weather Report and its successor bands Weather Update, The Zawinul Syndicate, and Jaco Pastorius’ Word of Mouth Band. He has recorded and toured with the likes of Stan Getz, Ahmad Jamal, Monty Alexander, Sir Roland Hanna, Zoot Sims, Herbie Mann, Eddie Harris, Branford Marsalis, Ahmad Jamal, Junior Mance, Paul Desmond, Johnny James, Monty Alexander, Wes Montgomery, and Roberto Perera. World artists he has played with include sitar player Amitava Chatterjee, and African artist Vinx. Currently a core member of The Zawinul Legacy Band, Thomas has issued several solo CDs, on which he plays an eclectic mix of instruments including conga drums, wind instruments, guitar and the African bow harp. He also leads a new group, The Alien Brothers: 7th World, who are putting together a debut album soon to be released.

Teatro Ojo/Hector Bourges/Patricio Villareal: Disorganizing Mimesis 3/10/18

Teatro Ojo/Hector Bourges/Patricio Villareal: Disorganizing Mimesis
Saturday, 03/10/2018 – 07:30 pm –
MDC Live Arts Lab
300 NE 2nd Avenue, Building 1,
Miami, Florida 33132

Cost: Free

The Mexico City-based group Teatro Ojo essays the possible dispositions and sequences of gestures, images, and machinations that sketch tensions within the texture of a “spectral contract” on which the figure of the Mexican nation-state is incessantly organized and disorganized—a contract plagued by “public secrets”: what we all know and yet we cannot utter. Bourges states the following about Disorganizing Mimesis: “Five images of a radical theatricality: a flayed/flayer god; a talking cross that incites a silent indigenous uprising that lasted a hundred years; a skeleton of the last Aztec emperor made from the bones of birds, deer, dogs, and a woman’s skull; the corpse of Emperor Montezuma talks to his people through a sinister act of ventriloquism; Subcomandante Marcos is unmasked by the Mexican government in 1995…and he turns out to be the son of a furniture dealer.”
Made up of Héctor Bourges, Karla Rodríguez, Patricio Villarreal, Laura Furlan, Gisela Cortés, and Emanuel Bourges, Teatro Ojo was founded in 2002 in Mexico City, where they still live and work. Their practice has shifted from conventionally theatrical territory to an expanded field that includes artworks, performances, and urban interventions. Collaborating with artists Santiago Sierra, Melanie Smith, Mario Bellatín, Juan José Gurrola, and others, the group questions ideas of memory, the city, violence, community, modernity, education, pre-language, and the post-human. Teatro Ojo’s most important projects include the installation Xipe Tótec, Ponte en Mi Pellejo (Put Yourself in My Shoes), at the 2012 Belluard Bollwerk International Festival, Fribourg, Switzerland, and Lo Que Viene (Forthcoming), a stage project at El Galeón Theater, INBA, Mexico City, also in 2012. Teatro Ojo’s work was also included in group exhibitions in 2014 at the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid and at the Alhóndiga in Bilbao. In 2011, Teatro Ojo received the gold medal for best Theater Architecture and Performance Space in the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space.
Teatro Ojo is part of Living Together, a cross-disciplinary series of performance art, film and video screenings, talks, and workshops held in venues across the greater Miami area and reflecting the cultural, social, and political realities of how we live now.

Although Ann Pellegrini’s work traverses disciplines, a constant theme is an abiding interest in exploring how feelings are lived, experienced, and communicated, and what potential risks and possibilities result. Another is the value of art and the aesthetic for repairing democratic social life. She is the author of Performance Anxieties: Staging Psychoanalysis, Staging Race (Routledge, 1997); co-author, with Janet R. Jakobsen, of Love the Sin: Sexual Regulation and the Limits of Religious Tolerance (NYU Press, 2003; Beacon Press, 2004); and co-author, with Michael Bronski and Michael Amico, of “You Can Tell Just By Looking” and 20 Other Myths about LGBT Life and People (Beacon Press, 2013). “You Can Tell Just By Looking” was a finalist for the 2014 Lambda Literary Award for Best LGBT Non-Fiction. She has also published two anthologies: Queer Theory and the Jewish Question, co-edited with Daniel Boyarin and Danial Itzkovitz (Columbia University Press, 2003); and Secularisms, co-edited with Janet R. Jakobsen (Duke University Press, 2008). Pellegrini co-edits the Sexual Cultures Series at New York University Press with Joshua Chambers-Letson and Tavia Nyong’o. She is currently completing a new book on “queer structures of religious feeling.” She is a professor in the Department of Performance Studies at New York University.
Ann Pellegrini’s lecture is part of Living Together, a cross-disciplinary series of performance art, film and video screenings, talks, and workshops held in venues across the greater Miami area and reflecting the cultural, social, and political realities of how we live now.

In this one-night-only event designed for anyone, NWS Fellows invite you into an imaginative listening party that will engage your senses, provide insight into the mind of a musician and transform how you listen to music. Mentored by MTT, four Fellows share the works that mean the most to them, welcoming your take on the same works in an interactive, all-right-answers environment. This journey of impressions and emotions transports us from pastoral mysticism to intoxicating sensuality, to the wildness of the sea and the fantasies of mythical beasts. Plus, as always when the Fellows are in the driver’s seat, be prepared for a few surprises along the way. Little Havana’s Favorite Free Family Series Returns with a Festive Bang!

Miami, Feb. 12, 2018 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Koubek Center reignites its beloved bilingual family series, Playtime: Días de las Familias with a grand celebration from noon – 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, presenting Carnaval de Barranquilla! This event is free and open to the public.

The Carnival of Barranquilla-declared a UNESCO Heritage Masterpiece-is said to be the second largest carnival celebration in the world. The Koubek Center, with the help of the acclaimed folkloric ensemble Puerta de Oro de Colombia and special guests Cumbiamba Curramberos en NY, brings its revelry and splendor to Little Havana.
The festivities will include music and dance performances and interactive workshops, story time, an exhibition of traditional carnival costumes, and craft-making of masks and “Congo Hats,” tall colorful headpieces that are an ode to the slaves who gathered in cabildos (slave associations that elected their own carnival queen) in the early carnivals. The performance will include the Cumbia, Fandango, Puya and Congo genres, and culminates in a grand finale Carnaval Parade!

The Playtime series provides parents an engaging (and free!) way for their children to learn and practice Spanish. The fun and interactive family days highlight the diverse arts, crafts, literary histories, and music and dance of the city’s many Hispanic cultures. Children will be invited to sing, dance, create and speak together en español. The Playtime series will continue with a Son Jarocho Day representing Veracruz, Mexico on Saturday, Mar. 31 and an Earth Day: Rumba Flora with educator and Grammy-nominated singer Rita Rosa on Saturday, Apr. 28.

Save the date! Feb 17 at 8: the South Motors Jazz Series at Pinecrest Gardens presents NEA Jazz Master Ellis Marsalis, with Jason Stewart (bass) and Herlin Riley (drums). “Marsalis is a one-of-the-kind gem, a living legend.” (John Soltes, hollywoodsoapbox.com). Tickets $30-35 at pinecrestgardens.org. Music courtesy of KCC Productions.

From his first professional performance with “The Groovy Boys” over fifty years ago, Ellis Marsalis has been a major influence in jazz. At that time, Marsalis was one of the few New Orleans musicians who did not specialize in Dixieland or rhythm and blues. He played with fellow modernists including Cannonball Adderley, Nat Adderley, and Al Hirt, becoming one of the most respected pianists in jazz. Though he has recorded almost twenty of his own albums, and was featured on many discs with such musicians as David “Fathead” Newman, Eddie Harris, Marcus Roberts, and Courtney Pine, he shunned the spotlight to focus on teaching.

As a leading educator at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, the University of New Orleans, and Xavier University of Louisiana, Ellis has influenced the careers of countless musicians, including Terence Blanchard, Harry Connick Jr., and Nicholas Payton; as well as his four musician sons: Wynton, Branford, Delfeayo and Jason. In May, 2007, Marsalis received an honorary doctorate from Tulane University for his contributions to jazz and musical education.

On December 7, 2008, Ellis Marsalis was inducted into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.

Through the generosity of South Motors and the National Endowment for the Arts we are proud to announce that four of the artists will participate in a special educational initiative we call South Motors Gen-Next Jam. Nestor Torres, Brian Lynch, Ellis Marsalis and Spyro Gyra will mentor gifted students from the New World School of the Arts High School under the direction of Jim Gasior. Check the calendar for locations and times of these special free workshops.

The 3rd season of chef/restaurateur Jose Mendin’s acclaimed guest chef series, Mendin & Friends, kicked off in high style last month with two sold-out events with none other than world-renowned Chef Massimo Bottura. With its decidedly international scope this season, the 2018 season is positioned to be full of not-to-be-missed events. Enter internationally-acclaimed star Chef Rodolfo Guzman, the celebrated chef/owner of one of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants Boragó in Chile. Guzman joins Mendin for the February edition of Mendin & Friends, which is being curated in conjunction with Gluttonomy.

On Tuesday, February 20, in the heart of the hottest week for food and drink connoisseurs in South Florida, guests will be able to join Mendin and Guzman at a special, cocktail reception featuring a welcome drink, an array of passed bites curated by Mendin and a book signing of Boragó – Guzman’s personal collection of fascinating narratives about Chilean geography and ingredients. The book – available for purchase at the reception – displays sketches of some of Guzman’s dishes and outlines of his creative processes. Boragó introduces readers to the pleasure of Chilean culture and cuisine through gorgeous photographs of the country’s scenery and carefully-curated shots of Guzman’s gastronomy. Tickets are limited and priced at $50 per person (excluding service charge and tax) and will take place at Habitat’s chic cocktail bar and lounge, Elements, located on the mezzanine level. Start time 8PM.

On Wednesday, February 21, Guzman and Mendin will go into the kitchen of Mendin’s acclaimed new restaurant Habitat at 1 Hotel South Beach, for a special dinner. The exclusive multi-course event will feature dishes by both chefs as well as collaborative efforts, all paired with select wines. Seating is limited and tickets are priced at $350 per person (exclusive of tax and service). A brief cocktail reception will begin at 7PM; guests will be seated at 7:30PM sharp.

“One of the greatest benefits of Mendin & Friends is getting to cook with people I respect and admire and getting to spend time with them in the kitchen,“ says Mendin, who launched the series in 2015 at Pubbelly Noodle Bar. “I’m a big fan of Rodolfo and very excited to give him a platform to showcase his cuisine in Miami.”

Tickets for both events can be purchased at https://www.exploretock.com/habitatmb/. The remainder of the 2018 season is in development but guests can look forward to upcoming dinners with celebrated chefs Mitsuharu ‘Micha’ Tsumura and Mauro Colagreco, among others. Back by popular demand, Canada’s multiple award winning string slingers SULTANS OF STRING bring their genre hopping musical passport to Delray audiences.

For the past 10 years, 3x JUNO Award nominees and triple Canadian Folk Music Award winners Sultans of String have thrilled audiences with their global sonic tapestry of Gypsy-jazz, Spanish Flamenco, Celtic, Arabic folk, and Cuban rhythms, celebrating musical fusion and human creativity with warmth and virtuosity.

They’ve been celebrating this milestone decade of music-making with a digital and vinyl release, aptly titled ’10’ (featuring re-mastered cuts from their 6-CD catalogue).

Folk Radio UK recently described their music as “an enthralling, adventurous celebration of the power music has to transcend geographical and cultural boundaries, and Sultans of String wield that power with grace, eloquence and spirit.” Indeed ’10’, is more than a global sonic tapestry. It is a musical promise that embraces differences while finding common ground across culture, land, and time. While the album treks across all kinds of musical terrain, the fertile soil beneath each track is fed by hope unhindered and freedom found.

At the core of the band’s sound is Queen’s Diamond Jubilee recipient Chris McKhool’s fiery fiddle, melded seamlessly with founding guitarist Kevin Laliberté’s (Jesse Cook) rumba rhythm. Together their musical synergy create Sultans of String’s signature sound – the intimate and playful relationship between violin and guitar. Added to this rich foundation for the show is in-the-pocket bass master Drew Birston (Chantal Kreviazuk).

Small businesses, retailers, manufacturers and designers across the United States and Latin America will get a boost for the summer when the Apparel Textile Sourcing Miami (ATS-M) trade show- a one-of-a-kind event- expands to Miami in May.
A comprehensive trade show and conference, ATS-M will take place May 21-23, 2018, at the Mana Wynwood Convention Center in Miami. The event will bring to Florida hundreds of international apparel and textile manufacturers from China, India, Bangladesh, the U.S., Turkey, Pakistan, Mexico and many other countries and territories from across Central and South America and all around the globe.
Moishe Mana, Miami-based billionaire developer and CEO of Mana Group said, “We are committed to making Miami the nexus for commerce between Asia, North America, and Latin America.” He continued, “We’re excited to have ATS Miami join this initiative as the fashion and apparel industry is one of our core verticals.”
The ATS brand has established itself internationally with Apparel Textile Sourcing Canada, held every August in Toronto. In 2017 the event grew by more than 50% in attendees and international exhibits. The same formula of success is the basis for ATS-Miami.
Next to the hundreds of manufacturers’ booths and exhibits, ATS-Miami will deliver 3-days-worth of an unprecedented platform of global connections in manufacturing and fashion.
Attendees will gain new insights and information to best navigate and profit in the international sourcing process
Featured focus on Manufacturer Transparency, Speed & Responsiveness + benefits of Near Sourcing Americas
“The expansion of the ATS Brand to Miami is a direct response to the market demand and fills a significant gap for the US-&-Latin American markets,” said Jason Prescott, CEO of JP Communications, organizer of the event and parent-company to toptenwholesale.com and manufacturer.com, the most expansive network of business-to-business sourcing platforms in the U.S. Millions of international members use these brands to locate wholesalers and manufacturers.
“ATS-Miami provides a unique opportunity for apparel and textile importers and retailers to intersect and access the most current importing information from the top industry insiders. Imagine the time and money saved for the local and Latin importers. The producers are coming from Asia to Miami,” Prescott said, emphasizing that China alone exports $42 billion in apparel a year to the US and $11 billion a year to Latin America.
Clay Hickson, VP Strategy & Business Development with Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (WRAP) said, “The team at Apparel Textile Sourcing puts on great events and we’re excited to partner with them again in Miami. We have partnered with ATS since the launch of the first event in Toronto, which has quickly grown to be an important apparel and fashion industry event in North America.”
ATS-M will feature three days-worth of seminars, panels and runway shows featuring acclaimed industry and government experts, covering topics from trade agreements to best practices with an eye on the changing Latin American market, as well as tips on how to choose overseas producers, plus new approaches on succeeding in the U.S. market.
“The ATS-Miami design pods and fashion show will include International apparel producers, Latin American artisans, Made-in-Americas manufacturers and active design students,” said Apparel Textile Sourcing Director John Banker. “The runway at ATSM will knock the socks off of summer fashion!”
ATS-M will also feature:
A “Made in USA” Pavilion, showcasing US-based manufacturers who source apparel and textiles from abroad for their finished goods, as well as US designers who have their designs produced into finished products overseas.
The Americas Pavilion featuring products from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Ecuador, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and more.
A Summer 2018 Apparel and Textile Trends display, providing a first-hand look at the colors, patterns and textures that will be all the rage for the summer nights in Miami.

Cost: $10.00 – $25.00

A Golden Age Throw-Back at the Koubek Mansion & Gardens

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Koubek Center kicks off it’s season with a throwback, hosting a 1940s-style ballroom social dance, Danzon Cubano! featuring Federico Britos yu su conjunto with the Emmy-award winning Miami Dade College Orchestra in a tribute to legends Barbarito Diez, Beny More, and Cachao on Sat., February 17 in the Koubek Center gardens.

Danzón is the official musical genre of Cuba and a slow, elegant partner dance with concise footwork and elegant pauses allowing couples to stand listening to virtuoso instrumental passages. Also revered in Mexico and Puerto Rico, the danzon’s characteristic look has become iconic: the closeness of partners, the swaying hips, and the minimal use of floor space, limited to a single floor tile (ladrillo). As exalted in The Gaurdian, “The elegant three-step can be traced back to Matanzas on Cuba’s northern shore, in 1870. The father of danzón, Miguel Failde, mixed European and African rhythms to which couples moved gracefully and precisely, gently flirting with each other, storytelling with their bodies. The women, holding a fan or flowers, are dipped and twirled, but with only fleeting touches and eye contact.”

Right in time for Valentine’s Day weekend, Koubek Center channels these sweeter times with a romantic evening of slow dancing, beautiful attire, old-school manners and glorious music paying homage to the genre’s legends. To help attendees warm up and loosen up, Koubek Center will offer a complimentary pre-concert dance lesson and will be blending specialty cocktails for purchase.

The LHSC series continues the following month with the sounds of Pacific Colombia in a Chirimia street-style party featuring Rancho Aparte on Saturday, Mar. 24; and in the spring with Betsayda Machado, “the Voice of Venezuela, ” offers up the spirit-shaking vocals and percussion of Afro-Venezuelan soul on Saturday, Apr. 21.

MOAD MDC Presents, Living Together February Film Series: From Nowhere
Thursday, 02/22/2018 – 07:00 pm –
Bill Cosford Cinema
5030 Brunson Dr,
Coral Gables, Florida 33146

Cost: Free

From Nowhere tells the story of three high-school students who are struggling with the issues that trouble all teenagers, but, in addition, these three have another issue which causes them constant concern. They are illegal aliens. They know that at any time, should someone require documentation from them, they could end up deported back to countries they don’t know and have never spent any time in. These children are really “from nowhere.” Each one wants to get papers but has to navigate the American legal system to do so. The lawyer who wants to help them makes it clear that the easiest way to obtain legal documentation is to apply for political asylum by “coming up with” some form of threat or abuse that they or their parents are afraid of if they are forced to return to their homelands. The wrenching drama was the winner of the Narrative Spotlight Audience Award at this year’s SXSW Film Festival. The film also won the Audience Award and the jury-awarded Special Mention prize at the Champs-Elysees Film Festival.
The Living Together Film Series, a program of films spread across ten nights, will be screened on selected Thursdays from September 2017 to April 2018 at MDC’s Tower Theater and at The Bill Cosford Cinema at the University of Miami. Living Together’s documentary and fiction films survey the dizzying political landscape of contemporary American cinema.

MDC Wolfson Auditorium

Miami, Florida 33132

In Out of the Shadows III, Jumana Emil Abboud asks “What do places speak of?” This audio-visual performance includes Palestinian folk-tales and traditional oral histories. These stories that inspire the artist have always emphasized the importance of relationships with the landscape and with sources of water. Evoking her Palestinian roots and the places to which she is deeply connected—Jerusalem, Jericho, the Dead Sea, and the Galilee—the artist uses music, poems, and drawings to weave together past and present, contemporary reality and the unseen world with its jinns and ghoulehs. For this world premiere, Abboud collaborates with Issa Freij, and the artists reflect on their experiences during a four-year film project as they searched for the haunted sites of which the tales tell. Their interactive storytelling explores folk customs, sacred objects, and enchanted locations to underscore themes of memory, loss, and resilience.
