As fresh and vibrant as ever are signature works from vintage classics to trend-setting innovative work in shadow.

PILOBOLUS puts the “Oh!” in Big Five Oh!, deliberately questioning its own givens, and turning its traditions sideways to bring its past into the future. PILOBOLUS continues to morph its way thrillingly into audiences’ hearts and minds. The celebration includes signature works from vintage classics to their trend setting innovative work in shadow.

PILOBOLUS is named after a barnyard fungus that propels its spores with extraordinary speed, accuracy and strength. The dance company was founded by a group of Dartmouth College students in 1971 and they continually form diverse collaborations that break down barriers between disciplines and challenge the way we think about dance. Physically and intellectually, the company engages and inspires audiences around the world through performance, education and creative consultation.

ABOUT RACHMANINOFF

Born in 1873, composer Sergei Rachmaninoff was not only one of the greatest pianists in history. While his Piano Concertos are considered amongst the most beloved by any composer, Rachmaninoff’s solo piano music features several hours of renowned works ranging from his two piano sonatas, 24 Preludes, and 17 Etudes Tableaux to his own transcriptions, variations on themes by other composers, and much much more.

RACHMANINOFF AT 150 most likely is the first time in Florida that all solo piano works by the great composer can be heard in concert – and by one of today’s most electrifying young pianists no less.

ABOUT ASIYA KOREPANOVA

Born to a musical family in Russia, Miss Korepanova made her orchestral debut at the age of nine with Mozart’s Concerto No. 8, including her own newly-composed cadenza. A musical prodigy, Korepanova’s early musical awards include the Russian Federation’s President Award for “Exceptional Achievement in the Arts,” and in 2012 won the Gold Medal at the Nina Wideman International Piano Competition.

Since immigrating to the U.S. in 2012, Korepanova has garnered national attention with performances at the Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall, the Bargemusic Series, the Phillips Collection, the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Series, the Miami International Piano Festival, and many others. She has been featured on CNN, NPR stations, WFMT, and WETA.

This season, in addition to being featured in the six recitals in Miami devoted to the complete solo piano works of Rachmaninoff, she will also celebrate the premiere of her latest transcription of Tchaikovsky’s epic Manfred Symphony, and also release scores of her compositions: the Poéme for alto saxophone and piano, and ‘Con Brio’ for two pianos, as well as solo piano transcriptions of works by Chopin, Schumann, Amy Beach, Faure, Mussorgsky, Franck, and Bach.

Sisters Etta and Claribel Cone are gifted with a day of life decades after their deaths. They spend it in a gallery where their collection of art, in a wing named after them, is exhibited. Gertrude Stein and her partner Alice B. Toklas crash the party. A Matisse painting comes to life and guides the four from the present to the past and back again. As they relive their lives, timid Etta examines her relationships with the others and makes new discoveries about her own vibrant inner life. This delightful and exuberant play will take you on a journey that is highly relevant to women’s lives today.

Fountainhead Presents Artists Open 5/11/19

Fountainhead Presents Artists Open
Saturday, 05/11/2019 – 11:00 am – 06:00 pm
Various Locations Throughout Miami
7338 NW Miami Ct,
Miami, Florida 33150
Website
Cost: Free

Fountainhead announces the inaugural edition of Artists Open, the first ever Miami-Dade County-wide open studios day. Initiated by Fountainhead and supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, 16 artists complexes and over 225 artists will open their studios to the public May 11, 2019 from 11am to 6pm.

With the support of Knight Foundation, The Fountainhead will host a countywide open studio event in Miami-Dade county, the first of its kind. The Fountainhead is on a mission to unite artists and raise awareness of the vast, incredible talent right here in our own backyard.

On Saturday, May 11, 2019, from 11am to 6pm, 16 art studio complexes and studio communities, and artist’s studios within close proximity, will open their doors to the public. Over 225 artists are participating. The Fountainhead has been thorough in connecting with as many art studio complexes as possible for the big event. To keep navigation easy, we have focused on complexes and clusters of artist’s communities and studios. Complexes and communities, listed north to south, include; Bridge Red Art Complex, 8365 Studios, Fountainhead Studios, Visual Art Group, the Milk District, The Collective 62, Laundromat Art Space, ArtHood 56, Bakehouse Art Complex, 27/20 Studios, Oolite Arts (Miami Beach), Mana Contemporary 777, Void Projects, 4700 @ Bird Road Arts District and Deering Estate. Dimensions Variable is hosting their grand opening that night and will be open from 6 to 10pm ONLY.

Kathryn Mikesell, Co-founder and Executive Director of Fountainhead believes, “intimate access to artists and art opens people’s minds to the value of diversity and fosters dialogue, creating a more tolerant, engaged and inspired world. To have a voice, artists need a sustainable career. To be heard and to affect change, artists need a broad audience.”

Because many of the studios are not generally open to the public, information regarding ADA accessibility, parking and nearby public transportation is being provided for each location via the website.

As a green initiative we will not be distributing printed information or flyers. We will be providing a comprehensive map via the website, www.artistsopen.miami linking all complexes and artists and well as utilizing social media and communication platforms.

Many artists will have works available for sale in their studios.

For press inquiries, contact Kathryn Mikesell, Foundress and Executive Director at kathryn@fountainheadresidency.com.

ABOUT THE FOUNTAINHEAD

The Fountainhead, founded in 2008, serves as a catalyst for growth and sustainability in the professional careers of artists, provides Miami art professionals and enthusiasts access to emerging talent from around the world, cultivates new audiences for the arts and collaborates with institutions and businesses supporting the growth of Miami’s art and cultural community building a global family that transcends all borders and continues to give back.

The Fountainhead Studios, located in Little Haiti provides Miami-based artists working in all mediums with affordable and flexible raw studio space outside of the public eye. More than just studio space, we provide a community for a profession that is often solitary. Currently, there are more than 20 artists working there.

The Fountainhead Residency is an international artists’ residency in Miami, FL that empowers artists to build a sustainable career and cultivates new audiences for the arts. Each month, Fountainhead hosts 3-4 artists, operating year-round between 30-40 artists. To date over 370 artists from 43 countries have taken part in the residency.

Fountainhead wants to thank all their generous donors. Without their continued support this would not be possible. Knight Foundation, Jorge M. The installation will serve as a platform for several special live events, including Guided Nap Meditations led by the artists and live DJ soundscapes performed from bed.

Black Power Naps/Siestas Negras invites visitors to lounge on a variety of embellished beds, replete with gauzy canopies, serene lighting, therapeutic sound vibrations, and other restorative props. Correlating the exhaustion tactics once used to subjugate slaves with contemporary systems of exploitation and erosive fatigue, artists Navild and Sosa offer this “energetic repair” as a way as a way to “reclaim laziness and idleness as power” for those historically deprived of it.

Wizards, Dragons, and Books… Oh My!” is FTF’s newest literacy incentive and bully prevention show. The story stars Jojo, a great kid who loves to read… That is until some kids in the lunchroom start calling him names like “bookworm.” To avoid the bullying, Jojo goes to Mendel’s Magical Book Shop, hoping that he can sell his books and use the money to buy video games, so he’ll fit in with the other kids. Once in the Magic Book Shop though, things take an unexpected turn as the stories in his books magically start to jump to life all around him! Now, all of the pages in Jojo’s books are blank and the characters from his books are running wild in real life!
It’s up to Jojo to retell the stories to get his old friends to go back on the page. While Jojo works to get his favorite characters from his books to go back on to the pages they belong in, he remembers why he loves to read so much in the first place; It’s really FUN! Along the way Jojo starts to realize that all of his books have characters in them who are different, and that being different is what makes them special.
This show artfully weaves its featured books into its thru-line to create a show that both encourages reading and celebrates diversity.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra Presents Price, Montgomery, Brahms and Bach Featuring Awadagin Pratt 1/18/24

South Florida Symphony Orchestra Presents Price, Montgomery, Brahms and Bach Featuring Awadagin Pratt
Thursday, 01/18/2024-, 07:30 pm-09:30 pm
Temple Israel of Greater Miami
137 NE 19th Street,
Miami, Florida, 33132
Website
Cost: $36

In advance of Black History Month, South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), led by Music Director Sebrina María Alfonso, will present an adventurous program illuminating two prominent African American female composers – Florence Price, the first Black woman to have a composition performed by a major orchestra and Jessie Montgomery, whose Rounds for solo piano and orchestra is currently nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Contemporary Classical Composition. Award-winning pianist Awadagin Pratt will accompany SFSO for its premiere of Montgomery’s new piano concerto and Bach’s Keyboard Concerto No. 4. The program is anchored by Brahm’s lyrically sweeping Symphony No. 1. The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Temple Israel of Greater Miami (137 NE 19th St.).

Award-winning pianist Awadagin Pratt joins SFSO for Jessie Montgomery’s Rounds. Rounds is the opening track on Pratt’s 2023 release STILLPOINT, which explores the truth and beauty found within T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets, named by NPR as one of the 10 Best Classical Albums of 2023. For SFSO’s premiere of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Keyboard Concerto No. 4, (originally for harpsichord) Pratt will perform the sprightly work created in 1738. It’s a shimmering work that scholars believe may have once been a concerto for oboe, given the exceptional lyrical melodies for the soloist, but one will never truly know.

Since winning the prestigious Naumburg International Piano Competition in 1992 and receiving a 1994 Avery Fisher Career Grant, Pratt has received international acclaim for delivering “forceful, imaginative, and precisely tinted” performances (Washington Post) and is hailed as “one of the great and distinctive American pianists and conductors of our time” (WGBH). He has performed across six continents with the Boston and Chicago Symphony Orchestras, the New York Philharmonic, and many others; solo recitals at the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, and Lincoln Center. Between performances at the piano, Pratt also maintains a bustling conducting career. He is professor of piano at the San Francisco Conservatory. He remains the only graduate of the Peabody Institute (where he studied alongside SFSO’s Maestra Alfonso) to earn performance certificates in three areas — violin, piano, and conducting — and has received the Distinguished Alumni award from Johns Hopkins University and honorary doctorates from Illinois Wesleyan University, Susquehanna University, and the Boston Conservatory.

Jessie Montgomery is an acclaimed composer, violinist, and educator. A recipient of the Leonard Bernstein Award from the ASCAP Foundation and the Sphinx Medal of Excellence, Montgomery weaves classical music with elements of vernacular music, improvisation, poetry, and social consciousness. Her composition Rounds for solo piano and orchestra was commissioned by Awadagin Pratt and is based on exacting tensions from T.S. Eliot’s poem “Burnt Norton” which would later become the first of his “Four Quartets.” Rounds is nominated for a 2023 GRAMMY for Best Contemporary Classical Composition and The Washington Post stated of the work, “Rounds” was something of a revelation, and a reinforcement of Montgomery’s reliably vital voice as a composer.”

Florence Price was the first African American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer, and the first to have a composition played by a major orchestra – the Chicago Symphony’s performance at the 1933 World’s Fair — the Century of Progress Exposition. Price composed over 300 works: four symphonies, four concertos, as well as choral works, art songs, chamber music and music for solo instruments. SFSO will pay homage to this unsung hero with its premiere performance of her Andante Moderato, a piece from a string quartet that fuses Price’s fluency with African American spirituals with Western musical forms.

Rounding out SFSO’s Masterworks program is a performance of Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68. Brahms, himself, declared that the symphony, from sketches to finishing touches, took 21 years, from 1855 to 1876. The premiere of this symphony, conducted by the composer’s friend Felix Otto Dessoff, took place in 1876, in Karlsruhe, then in the Grand Duchy of Baden.

Following its highly acclaimed 25th anniversary season, including sold-out shows and a celebrated performance accompanying award-winning alt-rock indie vocalist Natalie Merchant, South Florida’s largest symphonic orchestra is continuing its musical journey of excellence inspiring audiences of all ages.

Upcoming concerts include masterworks from Bernstein, Schubert, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky and more, Including another SFSO premiere, Elllen Taaffe Zwilich’s Clarinet Concerto. SFSO will also host a 200thanniversary celebration of Beethoven’s magnificent Symphony No. 9 on March 3 at Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Additional popular music performances including Maestra Alfonso conducting SFSO in a live performance of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone ™ In Concert on April 5 and 6 and Classical Mystery Tour: A Symphonic Tribute to The Beatles on May 11, both at Broward Center for the Performing Arts (separately ticketed events).

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, one of the world’s most beloved dance companies, is celebrating its 65thanniversary season. The engagement will showcase the passionate spirit and extraordinary technique of the Company’s dancers.

The season’s repertory includes exciting new works commissioned especially for Ailey: Amy Hall Garner’s rousing, high-spirited tribute to her grandfather, CENTURY; Elizabeth Roxas-Dobrish’s dreamlike reminiscence of romance, Me, Myself and You; new productions of Ronald K. Brown’s Dancing Spirit, Jamar Roberts’ Ode and Solo by Hans van Manen; and, as always, Alvin Ailey’s must-see American masterpiece Revelations. Since its debut in 1960, Revelations has been moving audiences with its powerful storytelling and soul-stirring music, evoking timeless themes of determination, hope and transcendence. An intimate reflection of Ailey’s childhood memories of growing up in the South and attending services at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Texas, Revelations pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of the African American community and explores the emotional spectrum of the human condition.

In 2008, a U.S. Congressional resolution designated the company “a vital American cultural ambassador to the world” that celebrates the African American cultural experience and preserves and enriches America’s modern dance heritage. Although he created 79 ballets over his lifetime, Ailey maintained that his company was not exclusively a repository for his own work.

Standing out amongst common, run-of-the-mill sporting events is an innovative and exciting take on a sport that originated in the Basque region of Spain and France – Battle Court Jai-Alai.

The high speed game, coined “The World’s Fastest Ball Sport,” involves bouncing a ball off a walled-in space by accelerating it to speeds of over 150 mph with a hand-held wicker cesta. While Jai-Alai took root in Miami nearly 50 years ago during the go-go days of the 1970s and ’80s, the new take on the game promises to provide even more thrills and action to game attendees. The fresh spin on the game takes the best features of Jai-Alai singles and doubles matches and combines them with a state-of-the-art Jai-Alai court and the world’s best Jai-Alai players (some of them even being home-grown from University of Miami). Additionally, to speed up the sport, Magic City has reduced the traditional fronton length by nearly 60 feet and replaced the typical goatskin ball with a bouncier pelota that ricochets against a high-impact glass wall instead of a more commonly-seen granite wall. Magic City has also launched a new and more exciting format of play, which resembles the way tennis matches are played and promises to keep fans on the edge of their seats all season long.

This September marks the start of the Fall 22 Battle Court season, lasting 9 weeks and played exclusively at the Magic City Fronton. Game attendees will enjoy all the perks of a live sporting event, such as sports bar style food and drinks, and sleek VIP areas, plus a high-energy DJ, cornhole, and fun raffles. The event is open to all ages, family and friends, and welcomes existing fans of the sport and those who are new to the world of Jai-Alai to experience something like never before. Whether you’re a lover of the game or simply want to shake up your Friday night, Battle Court Jai-Alai is sure to entertain.
The introduction of Jai-Alai adds to Miami’s expansive and innovative sports scene. Where other cities focus on tried and true sports traditions, Miami is increasingly on the cutting edge, bringing in events that are sure to surprise and delight guests.

“Battle Court Jai-Alai is dedicated to sharing the legacy and excitement of ‘The World’s Fastest Sport’ with a new generation of fans,” says Scott Savin, the chief operating officer of Magic City. “We’re thrilled to be building the future of Jai-Alai in the Miami community.”

Doors open at 6:30pm and the first serve is at 7:00pm. The matches will be available to stream on ESPN3, FTF Sports, WatchJaiAlai.com, and the Jai-Alai app live, allowing anyone to take part in the action between now and mid-November 2022. The Magic City Fronton is located at 450 NW 37th Ave, Miami, FL 33125 and offers free parking for game day attendees. Learn more about Battle Court Jai-Alai at JaiAlaiWorld.com.

Until November 2022, lovers of the game or those just wanting to experience something new are invited to experience the high action game and event extras like food and drinks, music, raffles, and more.

Flight Into Egypt: Rare, Reformation-Era Stained Glass Exhibition

Two rare, pre-17th century, stained-glass panels depicting the Holy Family’s Flight Into Egypt are on permanent display at the Deering Estate beginning October 19th. The historic significance of these pieces cannot be overstated, as very few stained glass representations of religious art from this period have survived centuries marked by the ravages of war, political upheavals and natural deterioration. Of the stained-glass panels from that era that have survived, there are only 14 other pieces on public display in Florida. Admission to the 450-acre estate is $15 for adults; $7 for children (ages 4-14); Military and seniors receive a $2 discount on Tuesdays, and Deering Estate Foundation members admitted free. The Deering Estate is located at 16701 SW 72nd Avenue, Palmetto Bay, FL 33157. Open 10 am till 5 pm. South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), led by Sebrina María Alfonso, will present Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos in E-flat Major, K. 365, featuring Catherine Lan and Tao Lin of Duo Beaux Arts, Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Opus 56, “Scotch” and Rossini’s The Italian Girl in Algiers Overture as part of its Masterworks IV series. The concert will commence on March 24, at 7:30 p.m., at Temple Israel of Greater Miami.

The program begins with the sparkling overture to Rossini’s comic opera The Italian Girl in Algiers, which is said to be among the most memorable in all of Rossini’s work. It is known for its distinct opening of slow, quiet woodwinds in imitation of pizzicato strings, leading to a sudden loud burst of sound from the full ensemble.

The concert continues with Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos in E-flat Major, K. 365, featuring the dynamic Catherine Lan and Tao Lin — husband and wife – of Duo Beaux Arts. The pair will join SFSO on the mainstage for the first time, performing one of the limited number of Mozart works for two or more solo instruments with orchestra. They were regular performers during SFSO’s virtual Intermission Music Series, presented for free during Covid shutdown. Lan also performs as a member of the South Florida Symphony Orchestra, most recently during its Handel’s Messiah concerts. Formed in 2008, Duo Beaux Arts is critically acclaimed for its adrenalized performances across Europe and the United States. The pair has been featured on Fox 4’s “Morning Blend TV,” Maine Public and in Venice magazine, Asian-Trend magazine, World Journal New York, and Gulfshore Life magazine. Season highlights include recitals at Swan City Piano Festival and the prestigious Cosmos Club in Washington D.C., as well as concert tours in Hungary and Canada.

The program concludes with Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Opus 56. Some of Mendelssohn’s most brilliant musical inspirations came from his travels. While on holiday in Scotland, he was particularly moved by the picturesque, evocative ruins of Holyrood Chapel in Edinburgh, the inspiration for his Third Symphony — also known as the “Scottish” or “Scotch” Symphony.

Recently named Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ first Partner in the Arts for its affiliated $30 million renovated venue, The Parker, South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s 2021-22 season runs through April 28, 2022.

General admission tickets for Masterworks IV: Mozart, Mendelssohn & Rossini are $36. Tickets are on sale, now at southfloridasymphony.org/masterworksiv. Additional health and safety concert attendance protocols can be found on the site. Student tickets and group rates are also available by calling (954) 522-8445 or emailing info@southfloridasymphony.org.

In keeping with social distancing guidelines and community safety, this year’s festival kicks off on August 20 at 7 p.m. with OUTshine’s Opening Night Drive-OUT, a preview of Stage Mother, at the Drive-In Theater at Dezerland Park (14401 NE 19th Avenue, North Miami, FL 33181). In the process, she finds new meaning for her life and embraces the club’s flamboyant performers.

This year’s line-up includes Centerpiece film The Goddess of Fortune (La Dea Fortuna) (Italy), Drama-Comedy on August 26 at 7 p.m.; a Ladies Shorts Package Night on August 22 at 5 p.m., a Men’s Shorts Package Night on August 23 at 5 p.m.; a South Florida Speaks – Shorts Program on August 30 at 5 p.m., Closing Night film Single Street (Singel 39) (Netherlands), Comedy on August 30 a 7 p.m.; and two FREE Community Showings – Letters to Eloisa (USA), Drama on August 22 at 3 p.m. and TRANSformations – a Trans Shorts Package on August 29 at 3 p.m.

Join us for a special evening as we gather to celebrate the opening of “Chiaroscuro” a solo exhibition by Amanda Valdes.

Miami native Amanda Valdes’ iconic macabre style is instantly recognizable and has made an impact on art collectors globally. Valdes’ art focuses on the female identity, primarily drawing inspiration from the depths of her imagination. Her iconic dolls share a common trait in that none of them are drawn with pupils, creating an even deeper mystery into “the windows of the soul”. In addition to traditional canvas, Valdes also creates large-scale murals, 3D sculptures, and
illustrates and designs textile patterns. Valdes attended Florida Atlantic University and the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. She’s had several solo exhibitions, and is continually showing her work internationally. Valdes has collaborated with brands like Ford Motors, HGTV, Miami Dolphins, Warner Brothers, DC Comics, Macy’s and more.

There will be live music, complimentary beverages and a food truck on site. We look forward to seeing everyone!

About Taylor:

Taylor Cavazos is a Mexican American artist born along the southernmost border of the United States in Harlingen, Texas. She is most known for her colorful, detailed, and symbolic Mexican-American paintings. After moving to Miami in early 2018, Taylor produced her collection of acrylic-on-canvas art pieces, focused on Mexico’s representation of the calavera (skull), Dia de Los Muertos and “Fridamania,” referring to the growing celebrity status of famed Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo.

Taylor Cavazos Art also has a larger purpose. Living with anxiety, Taylor finds solace in painting repetitive “dots and swirl” patterns on her canvas. “It helps me clear my mind,” she explains.

“Sometimes, hours pass without me noticing. I block out all unnecessary thoughts and truly relax when I’m painting these patterns.” Taylor hopes her unique take on Latinx art will serve as a platform to discuss the prevalence of mental health issues among Latinx and Hispanic American populations.

Gottsch’s Princess Yurievskaya followed by Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique as part of its Masterworks III series. The concert will commence on January 20, at 7:30 p.m., at Temple Israel of Greater Miami.

The concert will begin with the premiere live performance of Princess Yurievskaya by SFSO composer-in-residence, John D. Gottsch. Princess Yurievskaya charts the passionate love of Catherine Dolgorukova and Tsar Alexander II — from their first meeting and eventual marriage to his assassination. This vivid narrative is full of exciting dances and torrid romance, irradiated with evocative orchestral solos.

In June 2020, Gottsch’s debut album – featuring Princess Yurievskaya and another SFSO premiere, Sunset, was released by Naxos Records, the world’s leading classical music label. The works, performed by Maestra Sebrina María Alfonso and South Florida Symphony Orchestra, were recorded at Nova Southeastern University’s Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on March 10 -11, 2020, prior to the challenges and closures of the world health pandemic.

John D. Gottsch was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and moved to Florida with his family, shortly thereafter. He spent his youth in the lake country of the Sunshine State traveling extensively and observing natural habitats. These explorations of Florida gave him an enduring love for its beauty and wildlife. He has been a lifelong composer and a number of his compositions reflect his deep appreciation of the outdoors. SFSO also performed Gottsch’s Bagatelles for Violin & Piano as part of its Summer With the Symphony Series in June 2021. His piano suite, Homosassa, premiered in Palm Beach in 2020. His piano quintet, Maryland Hunt, premiered at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Washington, D.C in 2018 and has been performed in Philadelphia, Vienna, Rotterdam and Baltimore. Gottsch, a full-time doctor, now splits his time between Baltimore and Key West.

The program concludes with a work that Tchaikovsky considered to be the best of all his creations. In the last few months of his life, Tchaikovsky composed his haunting Symphony No. 6 in B minor – which made its premiere just nine days before his death. He called it “The Passionate Symphony,” using the equivalent Russian word which the French then mistranslated into “Pathétique” (meaning “evoking pity”) after his death.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra, recently named Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ first Partner in the Arts for its affiliated $30 million renovated venue, The Parker, launched its 2021-22 season in spectacular style on November 17 with Berlioz’ spirited Roman Carnival Overture; Ravel’s vibrant orchestration of Mussorgsky’s musical art gallery, Pictures at an Exhibition; and a 100th birthday celebration in honor of Astor Piazzolla, featuring The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires (Las Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas) performed by violinist Siwoo Kim. The season continued in early December with performances of Handel’s glorious Messiah to full houses in Fort Lauderdale and Miami. The season runs through April 28, 2022.

General admission tickets are $36 for Masterworks III: Tchaikovsky & Gottsch at Temple Israel of Greater Miami (137 NE 19th Street). Tickets are on sale, now at southfloridasymphony.org/masterworksiii. Additional health and safety concert attendance protocols can be found on the site. South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), led by Sebrina María Alfonso, will present Mahler’s “Adagietto” from Symphony No. 5, Copland’s Clarinet Concerto featuring David Shifrin, clarinet, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major, “Eroica,” as part of its Masterworks V series. The concert will take place on April 28, at 7:30 p.m., at Temple Israel of Greater Miami.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s season finale concert commences with Mahler’s fourth movement of his Fifth Symphony — a love note to his future wife — and Copland’s Clarinet Concerto, also referred to Concerto for Clarinet and String Orchestra (with Harp and Piano). Acclaimed soloist, David Shifrin, joins SFSO for this melodious and jazzy two-movement concerto, which was originally commissioned by renowned jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman.

One of only three wind players to have been awarded the Avery Fisher Prize since the award’s inception in 1974, Shifrin is in constant demand as an orchestral soloist, recitalist and chamber music collaborator. He has appeared with numerous symphonies in the U.S., and internationally with orchestras in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. He has also received critical acclaim as a recitalist, appearing at such venues as Alice Tully Hall, Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall and the 92nd Street Y in New York City, as well as at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. A much sought-after chamber musician, he has collaborated frequently with such distinguished ensembles and artists as the Tokyo and Emerson String Quartets, Wynton Marsalis, and pianists Emanuel Ax and André Watts.

An artist member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center since 1989, Shifrin served as its artistic director from 1992 to 2004. He has toured extensively throughout the US with CMSLC and hosted and performed in several national television broadcasts on PBS’s Live From Lincoln Center. He has been the artistic director of Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, Oregon since 1981 and is also the artistic director of the Phoenix Chamber Music Festival. In addition, he has served as principal clarinetist with the Cleveland Orchestra, American Symphony Orchestra (under Stokowski), the Honolulu and Dallas symphonies, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the New York Chamber Symphony. Shifrin joined the faculty at the Yale School of Music in 1987 and was appointed artistic director of the Chamber Music Society of Yale and Yale’s annual concert series at Carnegie Hall in September 2008. He has also served on the faculties of The Juilliard School, University of Southern California, University of Michigan, Cleveland Institute of Music and the University of Hawaii. In 2007 he was awarded an honorary professorship at China’s Central Conservatory in Beijing.

Shifrin’s recordings on Delos, DGG, Angel/EMI, Arabesque, BMG, SONY, and CRI have consistently garnered praise and awards.

SFSO’s magnificent 2021/22 season culminates with one of Beethoven’s most celebrated works: his monumental Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major. The “Eroica” Symphony represents a turning point not only in Beethoven’s career — but also in the history of music — setting a new symphonic template for future composers to emulate. This is truly a “Sinfonia Eroica,” or heroic symphony.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra, recently named Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ first Partner in the Arts for its affiliated $30 million renovated venue, The Parker, launched its 2021-22 season in spectacular style on November 17, 2021.

General admission tickets for Masterworks V: Beethoven, Copland and Mahler are $36 for the April 28 performance at Temple Israel of Greater Miami (137 NE 19th Street). Tickets are on sale, now, at southfloridasymphony.org/masterworksv. Student tickets and group rates are also available by calling (954) 522-8445 or emailing info@southfloridasymphony.org.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) welcomes audiences back to rediscover the thrill of live classical music! The esteemed symphony launches its 2021-22 season in spectacular style on November 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Temple Israel of Greater Miami with Berlioz’ spirited Roman Carnival Overture; Ravel’s vibrant orchestration of Mussorgsky’s musical art gallery, Pictures at an Exhibition; and a 100th birthday celebration in honor of Astor Piazzolla, featuring The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires (Las Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas) performed by violinist Siwoo Kim.

South Florida Symphony’s 2021-22 season opens with “nine minutes of dashing music” by Berlioz, his overture to opera Benvenuto Cellini, called The Roman Carnival. Also on the bill is Ravel’s vibrant orchestration of Mussorgsky’s musical art gallery, Pictures at an Exhibition.

In celebration of Astor Piazzolla’s 100th birthday, South Florida Symphony presents his response to Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons — with an Argentinian tango twist. Violinist Siwoo Kim returns to the SFSO stages to perform the father of nuevo tango’s The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, an unusual collection of individual tangos that form a remarkable whole.

Called “incisive” and “compelling” by The New York Times, Siwoo Kim, charmed the South Florida Symphony Orchestra audiences with his performance Brahms Violin Concerto in January 2020. Siwoo performs globally as soloist and chamber musician, and he is the co-founding artistic director of VIVO Music Festival in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.

Upcoming concerts will include Masterworks II: Handel’s Messiah on December 4; Masterworks III: Tchaikovsky and Gottsch Princess Yurievskaya – world premiere on January 20; Masterworks IV: Mozart, Mendelssohn and Rossini on March 24 and Masterworks V: Beethoven, Copland and Bach on April 28.

General admission tickets for Temple Israel of Greater Miami start at $36 with five-concert subscription packages starting at $160. Tickets are on sale, now at southfloridasymphony.org/masterworksi. Additional health and safety concert attendance protocols can be found on the site.
