Annual Art Of Found Objects Celebration Hosted By The Education Fund at The Moore Building on Friday, May 20, 2011. Â What an amazing event!!!!
The charity auction combines the power of a child’s imagination with the ultimate recycling program. This year the auction will feature unique pieces of art created by Miami-Dade elementary, middle and high-school students and teachers representing close to 50 schools, many in low income neighborhoods. The original works were all crafted from supplies “found†at The Education Fund’s Ocean Bank Center for Educational Materials. The Center is stocked with donated supplies, where more than 15,000 teachers and their students have shopped free of charge for classroom supplies since 1993.
The culinary arts was also under the spotlight, featuring a food prepared by student chefs from Robert Morgan Senior High School’s award-winning culinary arts magnet program. The food was donated from Whole Foods, these students created signature dishes using the recipes provided by chefs Michael Schwartz of Michael’s Genuine Food and Drink, Michelle Bernstein of Michy’s, and Cindy Hutson of Ortinique on the Mile.

CROTCH (all the Joseph Beuys references in the world cannot heal the pain, confusion, regret, cruelty, betrayal or trauma…)
Keith Hennessy’s Bessie-awarding winning piece was presented to critical acclaim at New York’s Dance Theatre Workshop in 2009. CROTCH references the images and actions of legendary conceptual artist Joseph Beuys. On the surface, the work is about art—its histories and heroes. On a deeper level, a sadness grows within a queer divorce melancholy. Hennessy was a pioneer in the queer performance scene in San Francisco during the 1980s and 1990s. He has been featured in several books and documentaries, including David Gere’s “How To Make Dances in an Epidemic,†Richard Mohr’s “Gay Ideas,†and Dancers in Exile.

Gretel Vias and Liz Rodriguez possess two different backgrounds and two sets of career paths. Yet, this duo has combined their talents and individual skill sets to create a dynamic and unique brand: Designhouse. Coral Gables will officially welcome Designhouse, a boutique web, print, and brand design agency to the City Beautiful and the business community overall on Thursday, May 26, 2011. The by invitation event will take place at Novecento located at 121 Alhambra Plaza #100 Coral Gables from 6:30pm-9:30pm with a presentation by Coral Gables Chamber president Mark A. Trowbridge, John ORourke III, chairman and Coral Gables Mayor Jim Cason.
Novecento Coral Gables will be the location for this fabulous event taking place next week. Guests can expect to enjoy delicious Novecento hors de oeuvres, Chambord Vodka and Barcelo cocktails, lounge music by DJ Mayner who will create a relaxed vibe while guests network, engage and interact. For those interested in an outdoor smoke, Extravaganza Cigars will be rolling fresh cigars on the terrace. This popular eatery is a perfect location for this to-do as Designhouse is also located in the lovely Alhambra Plaza.
As described by the founders, Designhouse is a boutique web, print, and brand design agency. When asked about their new venture, they both smiled and responded: If you can dream it we can create it. Websites, logos, e-marketing, and branding are attacked with a holistic approach to give their clients a leg above the competition. This one-two punch power house design team takes pride in offering clients the personal touch which is what they feel has been missing in the creative world for a long while. The like-minded professionals met, and felt there was a void in the business community. They noticed growing changes and needs in the marketplace as well as a rising trend, a preference for working with boutique firms and local based ones more often times than not. The reason given by proprietors was simple, to get the service that was once paramount in a relationship with an agency but somehow lost during the last few years. Gretel Vias and Liz Rodriguez felt they had the perfect recipe as they both poses mind blowing talent combined with easy going personalities that fit the boutique style of business.
Designhouse was a concept born from change in the business world. Specifically, Rodriguez and Vias saw that they could provide top agency work and A1 service without charging clients large agency retainers. They have created a structure where the client will be able to gain strategic solutions, visuals and the marketing tools needed to set their company and brand apart from the rest while keeping a solid understanding of that clients budget and long term goals.
With a great network of partners that are scattered across the map, these ladies have created a unique business model to service clients outside of South Florida. Gretel Vias and Liz Rodriguez welcome you to their home, Designhouse.

Baron Siamanto Levon has become an icon in the world of design. But Levon is not limited to couture. He states, “A true designer will have no limits with imagination. The true designer should be able to create adding new dimension to any visual concept. Designers should know how to paint, how to sculpt, and how to carve. True designers should understand three dimensions and the shades of each color.” And that is just what Levon brings to this exhibition – his imagination.

Headliner: Forrest Shaw
Born in Miami and raised as an only child by a single hippie mother, Forrest Shaw got into stand-up comedy after a decade of life as a marine biologist. Saving manatees and counting seagrass by day, at night, Forrest dedicated himself to comedy, quickly working his way into regular club work. The influence of his former life as a biologist is evident in his material. Forrest delivers witty and clever anecdotes of his unorthodox with a wry smile. He shares his own faults and failures with the audience in hopes that they too can find the lighter side of those things in life, which sometimes seem too much to bear. He also isn’t fond of stupid people; but who is? Life is complicated and it shouldn’t be. We have created all of this stress and aggravation so the healthiest thing to do is make fun of ourselves and laugh about it.
Featuring the hilarious Wendi Starling and Richy Lala

The Mission Of Sunset House:
· This event Benefits Sunset House which is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) Florida Department of Children and Families licensed Level IV treatment center for men recovering from chemical dependency. Our mission is to safely and effectively transition our residents back into their communities with all of the tools necessary to maintain long-term, meaningful sobriety.
· What makes the Sunset House Program stand out among many other extended care facilities is the fact that we offer a highly structured environment that emphasizes client accountability and discipline. Our three to four month Program will see clients through a number of crucial real-world obstacles faced by the newly recovering individual. Money-management, job- and living-skills, and 12 Step enculturation are just some of the focal points of treatment at Sunset House.
· Another special feature of Sunset House is affordability. Some potential clients and their families cannot gather the resources required by many extended care programs. At Sunset House, 25% of client fees are subsidized through grant-writing and fundraising efforts. For $300 per week, our clients receive weekly group and individual therapy with a credentialed therapist, individualized treatment plans that are reviewed and updated throughout the course of treatment, auricular acupuncture to assist in stress-management and detoxification, nutritionist consultations, and 24/7 staff supervision and support. Our doors are always open to clients and their families, and people are viewed as people – not revenue.

Free Feature Show Following Primus Supporting Role
It is our absolute pleasure to announce that jazz-punk trio The Dead Kenny Gs (DKGs) will be performing at the Hurricane Bar & Lounge on Sunday, June 5th for the weekly BLP Rockout with your Cookout. That’s right, the night after they open for Primus at the Fillmore Theatre in Miami, DKGs will play their only solo gig of their extended nationwide tour supporting Primus and throw down a FREE show in Delray Beach. Saxophonist Skerik (Critters Buggin, Garage a Trois, Col. Claypool’s Frog Brigade & Fancy Band, Crack Sabbath, bassist Brad Houser (New Bohemians, Critters Buggin, Mingtrones) and drummer/percussionist Mike Dillon (Anti DiFranco, Billy Goat, Hairy Apes BMX, Ten Hands) have been described by the New York Times as “a pinball between styles: Afro-pop, Balkan, Klezmer and pocket funk lashed to Middle Eastern modality.â€
If the moniker for the combustible punk jazz trio The Dead Kenny Gs (DKGs) doesn’t say it all at first glance, one listen to their new album Operation Long Leash quickly puts it all in focus. Saxophonist Skerik (Critters Buggin, Garage a Trois, Col. Claypool’s Frog Brigade & Fancy Band, Crack Sabbath, bassist Brad Houser (New Bohemians, Critters Buggin, Mingtrones, etc.) and drummer/percussionist Mike Dillon (Anti DiFranco, Billy Goat, Critters Buggin, Garage A Trois, hairy Apes BMX, Ten Hands, etc.) are committed to musical subversion of the highest order. Precisely shifting gears between a muso obsession of musical styles and sonic colors, The Dead Kenny Gs have both the courage and the chops to realize their wildest aural visions. At one moment they’ll draw inspiration from punk legends The Minutemen, the next finds them embracing the spirit of jazz giant Rahsaan Roland Kirk and yet still another twist finds the pull of indie rock progenitors Deerhoof; yet all the while sounding purely DKGs. To further that extent, it’s not just music informing the trio’s voice, but a keen understanding of political conspiracy in American history. The album’s title, Operation Long Leash, comes from the clandestine CIA operation in the late ‘40s to fund Abstract Expressionism as a means for Western culture to undermine the rigid, confined and conformist ideals of the Soviet Union during the early years of the Cold War. www.thedeadkennygs.com

Mayami Son MachÃn< 174 NW 23 Street Miami, Florida 33127/p>
A project on Latin America, music, and gender
by Proyectos Ultravioleta, Guatemala City
The exhibition will remain on view thru July 23rd, 2011
Works by:
Abner Benaim, Bhakti Baxter, Juan Brenner, Buró de Intervenciones Públicas (BIP), Alfredo Ceibal, DETEXT, Juan Pablo Echeverri, Radamés “Juni†Figueroa, Hulda Guzmán, Jonathan Harker, Rita Indiana & Los Misterios + Noelia Quintero, Byron Mármol, Sofia Novella, Yoshua Okón, Fabi Pina, Naufus Ramirez-Figueroa, Carla Verea/Estudio Lake Verea in collaboration with Silverio, Carlos Woods
Mayami Son MachÃn is an exhibition which aims to explore common preconceptions about Latin American identity as seen through a fantasized place called Mayami, a city cloaked in a mystic haze of glory and glamour. The title of the exhibition is derived from The Miami Sound Machine, a 90’s era music group, which epitomized the notion of what it means to be latino living in Miami.
Maymi Son MachÃn departs from three principal notions;
1. “Mayami†as a referent and final destination of Latin American aspirations; both in terms of those who experience it via forced migration (economic, political, etc.) and those individuals for whom Miami becomes a Mecca of shopping and glamour.
2. “El Son†referencing the intrinsic rhythm of certain Latin American countries, music in general as the identifying characteristic of Latino cultures, along with the dances formed alongside these rhythms and their relationship to a sexual identity as characterized by a Latin American exoticism.
3. “Machîn†derived from “macho†which encompasses those works that construct and destroy the idea of the Latin American male, both in terms of an overly inflated notion of masculinity, alongside a stereotypical and caricature-like notion of female identity.
This exhibition was organized by Proyectos Ultravioleta, an artist run exhibition space located in downtown Guatemala City. The organizers were introduced to the gallery via New Methods, a symposium presented at The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, organized by Ruba Katrib.

Jazz @ New Theatre Concert Series Presents Batuke Samba Funk
Wednesday, May 25, at 7:30 PM
New Theatre
4120 Laguna Street
Coral Gables
Tickets are $20 and are available for purchase online at www.new-theatre.org or at the New Theatre box office. For further information, call the New Theatre box office at 305.443.5909.
Batuke Samba Funk, Miami’s hottest Brazilian band, brings their special blend of samba, funk, and jazz to Coral Gables’ New Theatre as part of the “Jazz @ New Theatre†concert series.
Created by visionary Dr. Jules Oaklander, founder of the monthly “Jazz at MOCA†series, this new program brings Dr. Oaklander’s same community-oriented philosophy as the now 15 year-old and highly successful MOCA Jazz program, looking to expand the audience for quality jazz throughout the Miami area and keeping local musicians in the public eye.
Batuke is the act of drumming on any surface or with any object, that makes a sound. Recycled cans, plastic buckets and pieces of scrap metal have all been transformed into percussive instruments that enhance the musical atmosphere of this group established by bassist Diogo Oliveira in 2008. Batuke Samba Funk, comprised of four Miami-based musicians, offers a fusion of Brazilian rhythms including samba and samba rock with classic American funk. While the core group consists of bass, drums, keyboard and voice, the ensemble is joined by trombone, female vocals and Brazilian percussion when performing with their full seven-piece configuration. The program is produced by KCC Productions of Miami Beach.
New Theatre is a multi-cultural theatre producing a season of Nouveau Classic works, blending classics and new works, which speak to and about a diverse contemporary audience by stimulating, provoking, challenging, and entertaining since 1986. Entering their 25th Anniversary Season, the theatre has flourished under the energetic Artistic Direction of Ricky J. Martinez and Managing Director, Eileen Suarez, refining its focus on works which speak of social/religious/humanistic interests, relevant issues of discrimination based on race, gender and sexual orientation, the immigrant’s plight, the role of youth in our community, and for stories from the heart and for the soul which celebrate the mosaic that makes up the South Florida community, in addition to classics by Shakespeare, Tennessee Williams, and others.

NASA Astronaut Leland D. Melvin to lead presentation in Miami Science Museum’s NASA funded Youth EXPO Virtual World Island
Pro-football-player-turned-multi-mission-astronaut (an all-around Superman), Leland D. Melvin will meet and talk with museum-mentored high school students in a computer-generated, 3-D environment created by students on the Miami Science Museum’s Virtual World Island in Teen Second Life on Saturday, May 21st at 10 a.m. Using avatars that they have created, youth will interact with Mr. Melvin’s avatar, who will talk about his passion for science, lend insight into his career path, and answer students’ questions.
Young people interacting with such a powerful role model through this computer- simulated world is a revolutionary new way of making the presentation more engaging, deepening their science knowledge and making the students more comfortable asking questions of the speaker. The presentation will be broadcast in the virtual world and projected in the Museum’s Theater so that the public can observe the virtual event and also participate through an avatar.
The secondary purpose of the event is to showcase Youth EXPO, an educational resource based on NASA’s climate visualizations. Youth EXPO is available to other on-line visitors to the Museum’s island where they can investigate the causes and repercussions of climate change.
The “Youth EXPO†youth-development program, funded by NASA’s Competitive Program for Science Museums and Planetariums, serves as a model program to engage underrepresented minorities in science. The high school students serve as evaluators and testers of the climate change simulation.
“We feel so privileged that Mr. Melvin has selected our program to ‘visit’ and know it will be an interesting and inspiring event for all,†said Dr. Judy Brown, the Miami Science Museum’s Senior Vice President for Education. “This is a great opportunity to share with the public what wonderful work NASA is funding within our youth community.â€
Leland D. Melvin joined NASA in 1989 as an aerospace engineer at the agency’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA. He joined the astronaut corps in 1998 and has served as a mission specialist on two space shuttle missions. In 2003, Melvin co-managed the former Educator Astronaut Program, which recruited teachers to become fully trained astronauts in an effort to connect space exploration with students across the country.
Mr. Melvin was named the associate administrator for education at NASA Headquarters in October 2010. He is responsible for the development and implementation of NASA’s education programs. As a passionate advocate of science education, he has been developing strategies to improve NASA’s education offerings and to assist in establishing goals, processes and evaluation techniques to implement a sustainable and innovative Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program. He is a two-time space shuttle astronaut and flew on missions STS-122 and STS-129 in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Prior to joining NASA, Mr. Melvin played in the National Football League for the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys.

FREE Concert in the Plaza by Haitian Singer-songwriter Beethova Obas
In the Gallery: Opening Exhibit of Contemporary Haitian Textiles
Beethova Obas builds upon Haiti’s rich diverse traditions – the elegant contribution of French chanson, African roots music, lyrical Caribbean dance rhythms. Here is world music at its best – a true fusion that speaks strongly of Haiti even as it incorporates Brazilian, Cuban, and jazz stylings. Beethova received his name, foretelling a musical future, from his father the renowned painter Charles Obas. His father was murdered under the Duvalier regime, while Beethova was still a teen.
He became determined to carry out his father’s wish, that he become a great musical artist. Over the past 30 years, his music has become a symbol of courage and of serenity. In between ballad-like melodies and rhythmic African beats, he shares his life’s story with powerful lyrics and colorful tones. He is now working with his brother Emanuel, also a singer and visual artist, and has been active in humanitarian work since last year’s earthquake.

Fort Lauderdale, FL 33308
www.gallery-101.com
The May Group Show “In the Company of Women” at Gallery 101 will highlight the amazing artworks of a group of three women artists:
Susan Wood (Susie Q)
Amalia Brujis
Wendy White
Susan Q Wood aka SusieQ, is an accomplished, award winning artist, author of Speak Your Truth, and Get on with Your Life and the publisher of Natural Awakenings Magazine in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. This magazine supports the health and wellness industry. She knew her art was on the right path when she started hearing how it made viewers feel. Once she heard them say that the artwork had become an important part of their environment, that it “spoke†to them in a loving way that fostered a positive attitude, she knew her creations were fulfilling their mission. By offering images in many different ways and formats, SusieQ intends to see her art fulfill its mission not only for individuals, groups and communities, but by contributing to the broader consciousness across the globe.
Amaila Brujis is fascinated with painting people. Initially, she painted these characters walking or running towards the horizon, melting in the distance with the colors of the sand and the sea. These landscapes were inspired in the deserts and the ocean near Lima, Peru where she grew up. There was a sense of loneliness, nostalgia of something gone, a quiet emotion, like the desert. The complexities of the human interaction in the streets of Miami, New York, London and Tel Aviv. Her images come from photographs I take in streets, museums or train stations. They come and go. Some appear to be in a hurry, and some are distracted, thoughtful, mysterious, lonely, or lost in the distance. Each person has his own story. In a multitude one may feel a sense of loneliness, but at the same time feel they are apart of humanity, going to the same place, sharing a common destiny.
Wendy White paints with the sensitivity of divine inspiration. Each painting is a medium in which she channels energies from the creative realm in order to manifest on the canvas. Using the medium of oils and glazes she strives to achieve a resonance of light that the “Old Masters” utilized in the Impressionist era. She often paints to music, and has found “rhythm†the unifying element of all the art forms including painting, writing, dance, and theatre. Each painting becomes a drum, as the “rhythm” of each brush stroke develops into a beating crescendo of colors vibrating to a complete musical symphony of tone. The rhythm floats the form – and the painting is revealed. Each painting has a destiny; and it is not hers as the artist to keep – the art of painting is a gift in which she receives in order to survive and she have learned to help others by utilizing this gift for the better good of the world. Painting is a consistent source of inspiration. As each canvas goes fo
rth in the world they are gifts of light for all to enjoy.

“Maroma Players” presents: “Somebody Wants To Say A Prayer”
by José Abreu Felippe.
Directed by: Rolando Moreno
In Somebody Wants To Say A Prayer, Abreu stirred by a overwhelming event (his mother died in 1995, after being hit by a car) assembles and disassembles, boldly, crucial passages in the life and death of a female victim of an accident; and the devastating effects that her sudden death causes on her loved ones. It is extremely difficult to summarize this complex and heart wrenching play, full of surprises, which explores with great theatrical expertise an absurd and dreadful incident.

RODEZart.com Gallery Presents: “WHAT MATTERS MOST†a David Acevedo solo exhibition
Vernissage will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2011
during Coconut Grove Gallery Walk from 7 to 10 p.m.
CocoWalk
3015 Grand Ave., Suite 237
Coconut Grove, FL 33133
As an artist, David Acevedo has constantly experimented with multiple subjects and media. Just recently he has created a series of works in which he has simplified and aligned the subject matter in a very straight forward, yet honest way. Matters is a collection of paintings that explore a recent self-imposed remedy to ever-changing expressions for Acevedo. It consists in a body of work in which the relationship between color and shape are the primary subjects allowing the viewer to see what matters most, obvious at times but holding secrets yet to be discovered. The simplicity and back-to-basics nature of these works offer an appealing and rewarding experience to the artist. Acevedo states, “There are all sorts of ‘matters’ going on in my head and my heart during the creative process.†Moreover, to look into the world of David Acevedo is perhaps to mirror our own desire as individuals to return to a world of innocence, naiveté, and serenity as we all seek to find What Matters Most in our lives.
June 4 – 25, 2011

University Of Miami Wynwood Project Space Presents Audrey Hynes neither here nor there

neither here nor there by Audrey Hynes will be on view from June 10 – 26, 2011
UM presents the Master of Fine Arts exhibition by Audrey Hynes on view beginning June 10, 2011. neither here nor there aims to evoke the familiar and the fantastical through non-site objects, on-site installation, site-specific installation, sculpture, video, sound and photography as documentation.
The basis of her work is conceptual, in an effort to rethink and recontextualize our perception of reality. The artist has said that the project specifically explores issues of material and location, by investigating an invasive species, the melaleuca tree, that has altered the physical terrain of the Everglades and South Florida. The exploration and manipulation of the materials becomes the process of each project, where the artwork is about process and time rather than static and enduring. The projects are relative to time and place within the site, they are temporary arrangements that are subject to change and become more of a sequence and narrative with each rearrangement, they are ephemeral like the material. The environmental, political and social conditions of the site are discovered through an exploration of location, material, process, and production.
Her projects are invented realities presented as fact that employ a pseudoscientific approach by using a variety of materials each with a corresponding process that becomes a major component for the overall inspiration and communication of the project. The actualization of the work occurs in two ways: either the artist begins with a solid idea and employs materials to certain ends, or my methodology begins as experimentation and leads to new discoveries and objects. This practice helps ensure an intuitive creative reaction that directly feeds her concept allowing an openness to new discoveries and provides fodder for developing dynamic, layered, stories. Her investigations frequent the topics of temporality, space, and time, and she is interested in the role that imagination plays in forming and reforming these physical properties of experience.
Her work is partially autobiographical and she attempts to detach herself from it to place it in a larger context with the intention of expressing a variety of feelings evident through human behavior. Each sculpture, photograph and installation relates to a theory where a subjective experience is in relation to a phenomena. The directedness that each project attempts to embody is an experience that is worldly, and inviting interaction and thought. By portraying her work as documentation of an actual experience, she attempts to evoke a sense of empathy with the object.
Hynes was born in Atlanta, Georgia and currently lives and works in Miami. She obtained her BFA from University of New Mexico in Studio Arts and a Post Baccaulaurette Certificate in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute.

Community outreach project to kickoff two of South Florida’s premier culinary benefits, Share Our Strength’s Taste of the Nation Fort Lauderdale & Miami
Local chefs will take a short break from their kitchens to fill boxes with food for the hungry at Feeding South Florida to kickoff this year’s Share Our Strength’s Taste of the Nation Miami and Fort Lauderdale events. In support of this great effort, several Food Trucks will participate as well by selling lunch and donating partial proceeds back to the organization. So far chef participants who will work in the Feeding South Florida warehouse include Chef Allen’s, Inc., Joe’s Stone Crab, Fairmont Turnberry Isle, China Grill, BRIO Tuscan Grille, Blue Tree Café and Catered Bliss, and others will be announced closer to Thursday.
The public is invited to play a part in the service day, which will also include a DJ from Mike Sipe Entertainment.
South Florida’s premier culinary benefits return to the Broward County Convention Center on Thursday, June 2 and then to the legendary Fairmont Turnberry Isle resort on Thursday, July 7. All ticket sales will be contributed to Share Our Strength, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization working to end childhood hunger in America.
During the community service day, chefs will tour Feeding South Florida’s Broward headquarters and will spend a couple hours assisting the distribution center’s staff and volunteers with sorting donated food items and checking for expiration dates, dents, damages and leaks.
Each year, Miami-Dade and Broward’s hottest chefs and mixologists donate their time, talent and passion during Share Our Strength’s Taste of the Nation Miami with one goal in mind: to raise the critical funds needed to end childhood hunger. There are over 17 million kids in America with 637,000 of this total in Florida – that’s 1 in 4 children—who do not know when or where they’ll have their next meal. In South Florida, funds are distributed to a number of beneficiaries like Feeding South Florida, which is the state’s largest food bank. For more information and to purchase tickets for Taste of the Nation, call 1-877-26-TASTE or visit www.strengthflorida.org.
With the increase in demand for food, Feeding South Florida is always looking for volunteers. For more information on how you can help, visit www.feedingsouthflorida.org.
I have always enjoyed artwalk in the Design District and that is where I usually go when I am in the area. However, I realized that I have not been to a Wynwood Art Walk for as long as I can remember. Therefore, as the date of the Wynwood Art Walk was approaching and two great events were happening in that area, I just had to try it out. This was the beginning of many firsts for me.
To begin, two of the galleries were opening at 5 p.m. instead of the usual 7 p.m., that gave me more time to scout the area. I parked near a parking lot which was the meeting place of the all-famous food trucks: Ms. Cheezious, The Mexican Gourmet, Daddy’s Grill, Che Grill, Red Koi, Sakaya Kitchen, and many more. It was a food truck lover’s delight. I have heard of the food trucks but never experience eating from one. I tried the pork croquettes from Sakaya kitchen and the Beef soft tacos from The Mexican Gourmet. YUM! It was hot right out of the oven and fresh. You just want to eat it right away. It was a great first time experience. I never knew that the area also had mobile bars and benches which art goers can enjoy their delectable meals. Although I understand that the food trucks have to work in an area where it is feasible for them but I would have liked that the parking lot to be more pedestrian friendly as the ground was not all smooth for walking. I had to walk in the midst of rocks and debris. Apart from that, a very good experience that I want to come back.
One of the first galleries I visited was Miguel Paredes Gallery. This contemporary artist is very gifted in his work. Very modernistic and every artwork is unique in its own way. I never seen anything like it. On this occasion, beverages was sponsored by Chivas and appetizers were from D. Rodriguez Cuba on Ocean. Chivas had two unique drinks: Chivas Smash and Punch. Although both were good, I personally loved the punch topped with an edible flower. Chef Douglas Rodriguez created some scrumptious appetizers such as small Marlin tacos, Tuna Tartar, Chicken Skewers, and the ever popular beef on a stick (it looked liked warm beef popsicle). I so wanted to try the “beef popsicle” but I had to go. That will be my appetizer when I go to the restaurant in the near future.
Gallery 212 was the destination of the launch of the art bus connecting Wynwood and Design District. Mayor Tomas Regalado was the guest of honor in the ribbon cutting ceremony. The Art Bus is a school bus that will take art lovers from Wynwood to Design District without the hassle of going to their cars and going to design district. This is convenient. As I waited for the Mayor and ceremony to begin, I strolled inside the gallery. There were many great works in many mediums but one type of artistic work that caught my eye was Michael Perez’s hand painted wine glasses. These one of a kind wine glasses are the type to have in a girls night. Although the artist told me that the wine glasses were not for drinking use due to the delicate artwork, he will be making wine glasses in a medium that people can drink from them while enjoying the wonderful artwork in them. I truly loved it.
Across the street, Harold Golen Gallery was holding an opening for the launch of Bunny Yeager’s book, Bouffant Beauties which featured her famous photographs of yesteryear’s beauties and centerfolds. As I skimmed through the book, she was incredibly a great photographer especially during the golden epoch era were there were many taboos especially for women.
As the night was heading to a close, I stopped by Cafeina for Miami Magazine’s/One Sotheby Tweet UP event. As this event was winding down, I went in to the gallery where it was suggested to go as there was a new installation. The works were wonderful as it reminded me of Bunny Yeager’s photographic book. As I went outside, the DJ was playing music from the 70’s but as I turned around to face the gallery, I noticed that the video was playing in sync with the music. What a flashback! As I stayed for 30 minutes, music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s played with the video. Definitely a blast from the past.
I visited other galleries in the area earlier that night and every gallery had a story of its own. I never knew how popular Wynwood has become over the years. There were so many people that I could barely walk on the sidewalk. Also, I went back to the food truck area and it was very crowded. People just love Wynwood for its modernistic, independent, futuristic artworks. Being different is to me the overall message that Wynwood wants to disseminate. Saturday, May 14 was a first experience that I want to relive over and over again. Kudos Wynwood as I will be coming back!!

Not Your Average Bar Grub at The Blue Piano:
New Dishes & Expanded Dessert Section
Blue Piano
4600 NE 2nd Avenue
Buena Vista neighborhood
Miami’s only destination serving up an ecclectic selection of wine and craft beers alongside an inspired small plates menu offering a live musical selection that includes chilled out jazz and soulful blues.
Gone are the days when all anyone could find at a bar were chicken wings, burgers and onion rings. The Blue Piano features a menu inspired by a late-night breakfast cravings, classic American comfort foods and plays on American school lunch classics by adding whimsical twists here and there. Although high quality and local ingredients and produce are sourced, creator and Chef Cesar Zapata-Diaz employs various pop culture classic snacks like cheesy Cheetos or crunchy pork rinds for an added element surprise that tickles every grown up’s funny bone.
After recently launching a menu expansion, the Blue Piano is pleased to announce some menu updates and new additions. The menu is sub-divided in five sections: From the Chiller, Hot Stuff, Flats, Snacky Type Things and Sweet Stuff.
From the Chiller menu updates include a Classic Caesar Salad made with good ole egg yolks, anchovies and baby romaine heads sourced right from Miami’s backyard, aka. Doral; Spanish boquerones are utilized for a milder, more delicate salty, umami component. A Creamy Burrata is accompanied by caramelized peach wedges, baby arugula from Homestead, crostini and vin cotto reduction.
The Hot Stuff section provides items not to be missed. The 2am Huevos, the Chester Cheetah and the McLuvvin’ are items quickly becoming House Specialties. The 2am huevos is a terra cotta casserole with a soft roasted, farm fresh egg, thyme, crostini with English farmhouse cheddar and organic, Umbrian truffle infused oil, good enough for breakfast, but even better late at night; the Chester Cheetah, a dangerously, cheesy mac ‘n cheese made with fontina, edam, burrata and cheddar cheeses is topped and baked crisp with a Cheetos crumb topping and extra Cheetos for added crunch; and the Mc Luvvin’ is a riff on a breakfast sandwich with sautéed chistorra (a type of Spanish chorizo), chicharrones, chipotle crema and fried quail egg served on a sour dough English muffin and sweet pickles on the side.
Weekly rotating specials are added to the Hot Stuff section. This week features Buffalo Style Chicharrones, crispy pork belly tossed in homemade buffalo sauce served with traditional the wing garnish of carrots and celery sticks with ranch dressing ($9); a Green Grill’d Cheez, toasty brioche slathered up with a basil/parsley/scallion herb butter, melty edam cheese and homemade butter pickles ($8); and Clams ‘n Sausage, little neck clams, chistorra, confit garlic and parsley ($12). In an effort to be dynamic, the menu items change regularly, so don’t expect it to be the same on any two visits.
A newly developed dessert section, Sweet Stuff, has been added. Highlighting interesting sweet/savory combinations. The selection is concise, but to the point. BP Peanut Butter Cups ($7) sandwiches chunky peanut butter between Mexican chocolate that combines ancho chiles, smoked paprika, cinnamon and cumin and is served with a Szechuan peppercorn scented coconut tapioca pudding. Cherry Bourbon Brioche Bread Pudding ($14) takes bread pudding to another level by adding shaved foie gras and luscious crème anglaise to the mix. Lastly, Espresso Brownies ($8), bittersweet chocolate and espresso fudge cakes, are served with a maple bacon cream.
The Blue Piano serves its Munchies menu all night long – Tuesday/Wednesday until 12am and Thursday through Saturday until 2am. This late kitchen makes it the ideal place for late night snacking for party goers and people who work in the biz and get out later than the average Joe. Menu items are affordably priced with items ranging from $4 – $15 per plate.

City Theatre is joining with Grammy-Nominated singer/songwriter Lisa Loeb to mount a summer-long engagement of last year’s hit rock musical Camp Kappawanna.
The rollicking musical celebrates timeless summer camp experiences with hip, cool music and lyrics by Grammy® Award-nominated singer/songwriter Lisa Loeb along with veteran songwriters Michelle Lewis and Dan Petty and a script by rising national playwright and South Florida native Marco Ramirez. With this season’s must-see musical, Camp Kappawanna, City Theatre set out to create a new classic for all ages: a fresh, original take on leaving home for the first time that, from start to finish, makes everyone in the audience feel as if they, too, are joining in the fun of summer camp!
Camp Kappawanna tells the story of Jenny Jenkins, awkward and adorable and 12, a kid who hasn’t really found herself just yet. She’s going away for the summer – her very first time leaving home. From the start, Camp Kappawanna makes audiences of all generations feel as if they, too, are joining in the fun of summer camp. Camp Kappawanna marks Grammy® Award-nominated multi-platinum selling singer/songwriter Lisa Loeb’s first musical production. Loeb created Camp Kappawanna’s music and lyrics along with collaborators Dan Petty and Michelle Lewis in celebration of her days at camp, where she first learned to play the guitar.
In a unique collaboration, the set will be designed by multiple Carbonell Award winning designer Sean McClelland in conjunction with illustrations created by the Candela Creative Group. The husband and wife design team of Rafols Morales and Candela Demarco created Camp Kappawanna’s unique cartoon design, and are utilizing the same bold, bright cartoon-like aesthetic in collaborating with scenic designer Sean McClelland. Their goal is to create a completely unique environment and experience for attendees. As an artist, designer and producer, Candela Demarco brings her experience creating games, contests and websites for kids for companies such as the Discovery Channel to City Theatre’s family musical. She says, “though I’ve never worked on musical theatre before, as a parent and an artist I saw an opportunity to bring my years of illustration and design experience to help create a cool, creative environment that will completely engage kids.â€
Together, the South Florida creative team will join with Grammy-Nominated singer/songwriter Lisa Loeb, playwright Marco Ramirez and co-composers and lyricists Michelle Lewis and Dan Petty to put Camp Kappawanna on the cultural map throughout South Florida.

Whale & Star Lecture Project. Lecture 7: Arshile Gorky and Abstract Expressionism: A Contested History by Michael R. Taylor

This lecture will explore Arshile Gorky’s complex and often misunderstood relationship with the Abstract Expressionist movement. The initial reception of Gorky’s work after his death in 1948 paved the way for his gradual assimilation into the canon of Abstract Expressionism as it was formed in the 1950s by, among others, Clement Greenberg, Harold Rosenberg, Thomas Hess, Sam Hunter, and Dore Ashton. Gorky’s work was acclaimed by these critics and art historians as an important precursor to the large-scale abstract paintings of his friends and colleagues, such as Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. Although universally accepted at the time, this reading of Gorky’s work has been contested in recent years, since it deliberately downplays the artist’s longstanding allegiance to Surrealism during his lifetime, leading to a fundamental misreading of his work and its meaning.
Michael R. Taylor is the Muriel and Philip Berman Curator of Modern Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. His most recent exhibitions at the Museum include Picasso and the Avant-Garde in Paris (2010); Marcel Duchamp: Etant donn’s (2009); Arshile Gorky: A Retrospective (2009); Salvador Dali: The Centennial Retrospective (2005); and Giorgio de Chirico and the Myth of Ariadne (2002). Dr. Taylor studied at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, where he wrote a masters thesis on Richard Hamilton and a doctoral dissertation on Marcel Duchamp’s readymades. He has published widely on Duchamp, Dada, and Surrealism. In 2009 he co-curated with Carlos Basualdo the Bruce Nauman exhibition at the American Pavilion for the 53rd Venice Biennale (winner of the Golden Lion award for best national pavilion). Future projects include an exhibition on Surrealism in the 1940s that focuses on myth, magic, and eroticism. In 2010 Dr. Taylor’s book Marcel Duchamp: Etan t donnis won the George Wittenborn Prize for outstanding research and scholarship in the field of art history.

This series is born bythe need to awaken reflections about our environment, by means of the visit ofimaginary beings that interact with our context. These entities star in scenesof urban and natural encounters, particular or general ones, within a reality which we would consider they don’t belong to, butnevertheless where they try to find their own space.
By penetrating into anunknown society, these beings attempt to discover our world through innocentfrolicking; and the behavior that sometimes seems vile or spiteful, is nothingmore than a wild and instinctive interaction caused by not knowing the conduct codes of our world. In fact, these are interactions where the process of exploring turns them intopersonifications of feelings and moods in their maximum state of purity;emotions we can somehow relate to.
These approaches, many times nostalgic and curious butalways naïve, along with their visions confronted with joy or lack of it when entering our space, are an invitation todiscover, imagine and reconsider the world that surrounds us.
Arrived reflects on the M-Lon’s idea that when we trulycome close and stop to observe, admire and understand that all these elements, natural or man-made, mean something to someone, it is in that precise momentwhen we will begin to take care, enjoy and respect it all.

Fadó Irish Pub And Restaurant Plays Up Pub Quiz With New Themes
Tuesday, May 17th, 9 p.m. to midnight
Every Tuesday
Fadó Irish Pub and Restaurant
900 South Miami Avenue
Miami, FL 33130
Boddingtons, Boxtys and Brains – some just have it all!
Bringing a 40-year-old European gaming tradition to Mary Brickell Village, Fadó Irish Pub and Restaurant has injected yet another dose of pub culture in Miami. Every Tuesday night, Fadó Irish Pub and Restaurant hosts a weekly pub quiz tournament to test guests’ trivia knowledge and compete against other teams for a variety of prizes offered throughout the night — and to take home the title of pub quiz champion!
On Tuesday, May 17th, Fado introduces a new theme to game night… the 80’s. Guests will need to brush up on their knowledge of Cyndi Lauper, 16 Candles and scrunchies as questions will test their knowledge of pop culture from the 1980’s.
Upon arrival, guests receive a pamphlet of answer sheets to set up teams for eight rounds of trivia. After each round of 10 questions, sheets are brought back up to a designated scorer who tallies up correct answers per each team and inputs them into a spreadsheet that is displayed on one of the pubs flat-screens so teams know their standing after each set. For round winners, a bonus question is offered by the “quiz master†to the top three teams for the opportunity to win additional points or prizes. At the end of the last round, a final tally totaling all of the scores from each round is conducted to determine the quiz victors and to reveal their ultimate prize. To make the game even more challenging, all electronic devices are prohibited from the pub quiz area to keep from having easy access to answers.
In between each round, guests enjoy music courtesy of the pub’s onsite DJ from 8 p.m. to midnight, and take advantage of Fadó’s extensive European draught beer selection including Boddingtons Pub Ale, Harp, Smithwick’s, Hoegaarden, as well as a variety of imported bottled beers, whiskey and scotch offerings, domestic wines and signature cocktails. Guests are also invited to pair their “liquid courage†with some delicious bites from Fadó’s dinner menu as the full menu will be available until midnight and offers tempting options such as the Guinness BBQ Wings, Smithwick’s Mini Burgers, Fish and Chips, Pulled Lamb Sandwich, Smoked Salmon Bites, Cheese Dip and Wedges and more.

de la Cruz Collection
In February of 2011, artist-in-residence Xavier Cha created an open casting call for actors. After receiving more than 50 head shots within one week, she narrowed down the selection to 20 actors to audition for 3 parts.
The three parts of the audition are based on familiar cinematic conventions with no dialogue. Although the subtle gestures listed on the casting call are open to personal interpretation, they are mostly mimetic of something one has already seen on screen.
The first part of the auditions were open to a public audience on the second floor of the de la Cruz Collection in February 12, 2011. With the actors Cha has selected from these auditions, she, with the assistance of a crew and professional film apparatus will attempt through multiple takes to capture a “close” representation of these familiar shots during the Design District’s Second Saturday Gallery Walk at the de la Cruz Collection on Saturday, May 14, 2011 from 7 pm to 10 pm.
In The Project Room:
April 9 – July 9, 2011
Kevin Arrow’s Amor Infinitus is based on a selection of two 35mm slides from a trove of travel slides that the artist received from a source who traveled around the world. These images speak to a love of travel and question what it is to be someplace else, memories, evidence, eternal love, and impermanence.

Flagler Arts Space will unveil its newest interactive experiment, ‘Smash Art: A Piñata Breaking Performance,’ on Saturday, May 21, from 7-10 p.m. at 172 W. Flagler St., across from the Miami Art Museum.
This show, a collection of dozens of fine-art piñatas built by Flagler Arts Space members and other local artists, will feature a series of ‘you buy it, you break it’ piñata destructions. The hidden contents of each purchased piñata will be revealed, fulfilling the artwork’s purpose, and enabling viewers to appreciate the artist’s ideas. The show will remain open by appointment until Friday, June 4.
The gallery and studios were recently opened by a cooperative of eight local artists working to build welcoming and interactive exhibits in downtown Miami. The artists — Annie Blazejack, David Olivera, Juan Travieso, Leonardo Castañeda, Nicole Mucher, Nicole Serize, Noah Garcia, Ray Lopez, and Reinier Gamboa — began their art-making at Miami magnet arts high schools, and have recently returned from continuing their studies at some of the nation’s top art schools. In keeping with this initiative and our overall vision, Social Esquire is hosting an empoWOMENt brunch where women will come together to celebrate their individuality.
We will also have a special honoree this year, Somy Ali. Somy Ali’s mother was a victim of domestic violence. Since 2006 Somy has been working as a human rights advocate through her non-profit organization, No More Tears, that stands in support of the Universal D…eclaration of Human Rights and its guarantees of safety, security and freedom for all humans. No More Tears’ mission is to eradicate violence in all its forms through collaborative projects involving awareness, education, activism, and advocacy for victims both domestically and abroad. No More Tears has rescued many women over the years; providing them with shelter, education, even assisting with immigration services for those not born in the U.S. It is our pleasure to shine a light on this organization.
The brunch will be held on June 4th, from 11:00 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the upscale Eden Restaurant in Miami Beach. To RSVP and make your donation, please go to www.myempowoment.org!

Captivating, soul stirring, earthy and funky. These are just some of the words used to describe the song stylings of LeNard Rutledge. Growing up in Miami, Florida, LeNard was always surrounded by many different musical styles. His parents had an extensive music collection ranging from Classical, Jazz, Hymns and the funk of James Brown.
In the fall of 1984, LeNard went to St. Augustine’s College in Raleigh, NC. LeNard was awarded a Band Scholarship by Dr. Harold Jeffries (Director of Bands). It was in Raleigh when LeNard’s musical journey took flight. In the fall of 1984, he recorded two jingles for WLLE, a local AM radio station. He played drums, co-wrote and sang background vocals. He played timpani and general percussion in the Concert band and was the back–up drummer for the Jazz Ensemble. After a year of hinting and periodic begging, LeNard got his first big break. In the fall of 1986, LeNard sang the ballad “Teach Me Tonight†at the Annual Spring Concert. His confidence grew as he sang more songs, which led to other projects such as studio work and voice-over jobs. For fear of letting his drumming chops falter, LeNard played at area clubs to keep the rust away. A musical friend (Rick Best) introduced him to song writing.
In 1992, Stanley Baird, an area saxophonist, asked LeNard to submit songs for his upcoming CD, Stop, Look & Listen. Stan recorded three of his songs and released them on his label, Saxony Records. In 1995, LeNard submitted two of those songs to the Billboard Songwriting Contest. One of the songs, “So In Love (with you)” placed in the top 1% of 50,000 R&B entries. In the fall of 1995, he returned for a while to Miami. Needing extra cash to return to school, a childhood friend, Alan Morley told him he could earn extra money producing Rap and Hip-Hop Music. He introduced him to Gary Bradshaw (a Miami Rapper). From October 1995 to January 1996, LeNard “ghost wrote†and produced 9 original tracks for Gary. After returning to school in January of 1996, LeNard made the Dean’s List and Graduated in May 1997 with a B.S. Degree in Industrial Hygiene and Safety.
In May 1997, LeNard moved back to Miami. In October 1997, LeNard auditioned as a vocalist for the Melton Mustafa Orchestra. He got the gig and was the featured vocalist until 2003. LeNard has been a featured vocalist at area jazz spots in South Florida. The Museum of Contemporary Art, the Van Dyke Café and O’Hara’s Jazz Pub are the most notable. LeNard has shared the stage with a number of highly respectable jazz artists such as: Nnenna Freelon, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kenny Drew Jr., and Harry Allen. In May of 2006, LeNard was named BEST JAZZ ARTIST, by the Miami New Times magazine. His first CD, Hello World, was released in November.

Join MANO Fine Art for the Opening Reception for Harriet’s Secret, an exhibition showcasing a new body of work by Miami-based artist, Derek Wilson.
Inspired by the memories of his late mother, Wilson has createed a poignant tribute to a mother’s legacy of love.
Wilson, recalls that the last conversation he had with his mother was a heated debate about her symptoms and the 911 call that he eventually made. Harriet Kathryn Michael as it reads on her birth certificate was struck by a massive heart attack. She passed away in her son’s arms on March 18, 2005 at the age of fifty-six. In his eulogy Wilson spoke about how close he and his mother had always been, “We were the best of friends†Wilson said. Yet, soon after her death he would discover that his mother had kept secrets from him. Some secrets were innocent, as is the story behind her name; Wilson grew up knowing her as Kathy not Harriet, other secrets were little white lies and some were deeper.
Wilson’s work weaves memories into a simple yet sophisticated iconography that gives the viewer a sense of who Kathryn was. Works such as “In A Dream We Spokeâ€, a portrait of his mother painted on yellow post-it-notes was inspired by her tendency to leave trails of messages around the house. With other pieces such as with the interactive installation “Secret Recipe†the viewer is invited to view a very private world, a world filled with medical recipes and their corresponding side effects. This piece attempts to unravel the web of secrets involving her health; secrets that she undoubtedly took with her.
Wilson, who earned his B.A. in Sculpture from Florida International University, attributes his eclectic taste in materials and media to the many experiences he had as an undergraduate student. “My methodology as it relates to art, is and has always been in a constant state of flux,†says Wilson. “I have an unquenchable thirst for the experiment, the process; this is what drives me.†Wilson, currently lives in Miami, Florida with his wife.

with Yury Shadrin, Piano
Eduardo Marturet, Conductor
A full size ninety piece symphony orchestra, accompanied by Russian born Virtuoso Yury Shadrin at the piano under the masterful conduction of Eduardo Marturet is indeed a world-class performance not many would expect to experience in an airport terminal but surely will delight the traveling passengers and will be a memorable cultural experience they will take away from Miami.
Meet and Greet Reception for VIP Guests to Immediately Follow
Music In Unsuspected Spacesis part of MISO’s community concert series, which brings their talented orchestra to various South Florida locations, surprising patrons with their amazing talent free of charge. A similar event was carried out in South Florida’s Aventura Mall on January 16th, 2010, which caused a crowd-stopping audience of hundreds of shoppers literally sitting on the floor to catch the show in beautiful awe.
The Miami-Dade Aviation Department, a strong supporter of MISO and cultural initiatives, agreed that providing this performance is step toward achieving their common goals of enriching the community. Photographs taken by Anthony Jordon of Martin Miller Gin Crawl on South Beach on Saturday, May 7, 2011. Â We meet at the Raleigh Hotel Bar and had four amazing gin cocktails and then we moved on to Eden Restaurant and some two gin cocktails paired with some amazing food made for us. Â Our last stop was at Waxy’s South Beach which we had three different gin cocktails. Â I have to say I normally don’t care for gin but some of these cocktails we had during this crawl has made me a gin fan. Â The Donatello at the Raleigh was my favorite, made with fresh blueberries, raspberries, orange , lemon and Martin Miller Gin, it was amazing.

CCEMiami, The Miami-Florida European Union Center of Excellence, a partnership with Florida International University, and the Jean Monnet Chair of the University of Miami, cordially invite you to the book presentation: Spain in the European Union: The First 25 Years (1986-2011)
“Spain is the problem. Europe is the solutionâ€. In this fashion Ortega y Gasset once dramatized the need to “Europeanize†Spain. The results over the first twenty five years of EU membership have been truly impressive. When Spain became a member of the EC, some of the best and brightest of Spain’s governmental cadres and universities joined the expanded European institutions, taking on positions of responsibility. Spain, in sum, “was not differentâ€, contrary to what old-fashion tourist publicity for the country used to say. It was a European country that was returning to its natural home after a long exile. Spain received considerable benefits from EU membership. From an index of 60 percent of the European average in 1986, today Spain’s income per head is in the range of 105 percent, with some regions surpassing 125 percent. From being a country that was a net receiver from the EU budget, Spain today is a net contributor. Reflecting this development, the present volume examines different dimensions of the deepening relationship between Spain and the rest of Europe through membership of the EU (its history, and its impact on policy development on economic growth and on relations with third countries). + info www.ccemiami.org

Four artists reveal themselves and their subjects as a multimedia collaboration intended to bring awareness to social issues.
EXPOSED is comprised of figurative painter Barry Gross, composer/filmmaker Neal Fox, motion photographer Adela Holmes, and celebrity and fashion photographer Presscott MacDonald.
The project began a year ago with several days of photo shoots based on four themes: Social Commentary, Spirituality, Time and Chance, and Metamorphosis. While MacDonald and Holmes worked with the models, Gross captured images for his paintings, and Fox shot footage of the artists at work for his videos. Thus making the multimedia project multilevel as well with art within the art.
Now the work is ready for viewing in a most suitable venue: the brand new Barry Gross Gallery in Fort Lauderdale.
The exhibit runs through June 24th.

Martin Miller Gin Crawl on South Beach on Saturday, May 7, 2011.

As you may already know, Stokeswood is a killer electroacoustic rock band from Atlanta. They were essentially unknown in Miami one year ago. After a steadfast tour commitment, they now have a huge fan base here and in New York City. Stokeswood holds residencies and has played at some of South Beach’s most exclusive spots like the W South Beach, The Florida Room at Delano, Vagabond, The Standard, The Stage, Bardot, The Betsy Hotel, etc. The band also headlined the New Year’s Eve celebration at the W Montreal this year. In NYC, Stokeswood plays many live music hotspots like Brooklyn Bowl and Ella Lounge, as well as at high-end hotels like the Royalton and Salon Millesime at the Carlton. This summer, Stokeswood embarks on its “Manifest Destiny Tour,” which begins with the EMU Music Festival July 4th weekend in Snowmass Village, CO.
Atlanta-based electroacoustic band, Stokeswood, was formed in 2004 by lead vocalist and acoustic guitar player, Adam Patterson, and lead electric guitarist, Mark Godwin. The five-piece also comprises a drummer, keyboardist, and bass player. Stokeswood’s independently released debut album, Carassia (2009), is like a sonic excursion between the lines of a poet’s story-telling prowess. Thoughtful introspection on the human condition is amplified and challenged by the layered accents of electroacoustic guitars, pianos, synths, strings and drums. The soulful and captivating vocals of Patterson carry each melody flawlessly through the rhythms and musical harmonies of each track. From start to finish, the album sparkles with intelligent musicality and impressive originality. Their songs are layered and euphonious with stimulating idiosyncrasies. Stokeswood’s sophomore album, “In the Field of the Vibrations,†showcases a vocal-centric aesthetic and an array of synthesizers and guitars that are illuminated by infectious dance beats. The evolution from jam to joyfully danceable was a natural progression over the course of the past year in the studio with Justin Mullinix of Generator Sound Studios in Atlanta. Protégé to Billy Hume, Mullinix has been dubbed the “Wonderboy of Indie Rock†for his eclectic ear and ability to cultivate a band’s sound. The new album is slated for release in May 2011.

Romance in a Can celebrated another year of romantic films on their Opening Night at The Anglers Boutique Resort in Miami Beach. Guests were treated to cocktails and appetizers as they anticipated for the first film, “The Age or Reason” with Sophie Marceau. A special welcoming presentation with the Executive Director of Romance in a Can, Isabelle Lambert was given.
The French film (with English subtitle) dealt with Margaret (Marceau) as a high-powered executive in the construction industry, who manages her career with steely determination. Her hyper-structured life revolves around Blackberry appointments, business dinners and a secret sexual relationship with her colleague Malcolm (Marton Csokas). But on her 40th birthday, a retired provincial solicitor delivers a package of long-forgotten letters from a long-forgotten stranger: her seven year-old self. Margaret quickly finds herself overwhelmed by hidden memories of her childhood that throw her worldview into chaos, as she realizes she’s become the exact opposite of what she hoped for herself.
In this film, Marceau delivered one of the most generous and expressive performances of her career, as the secrets and compromises of Margaret’s life come back to shake her. Fresh, bright and stylistically inventive with a touch of magic realism, here was a thoroughly-winning charmer that fans adored.

Proceeds will benefit Arts programs in Miami-Dade County Public Schools
The most extraordinary arts and education event of the season is here! The Education Fund’s Annual Charity Auction “The Art of Found Objects†will take place at The Moore Building in the Miami Design District on May 20 at 7 p.m. This exclusive art and children’s education devotee event will showcase more than 200 one-of-a-kind artworks created by Miami-Dade County public school students and teachers. The event will feature live music by the New World School of the Arts and an epicurean feast with local celebrity chefs, as well as bids on exclusive items and luxury vacation packages.
This year also marks The Education Fund’s 25th anniversary. To celebrate, The Education Fund is honoring 25 local leaders who are all products of the Miami-Dade County public schools, showing what a public education can do for you! Honorees include the new head of Jackson Health System, a college president, the founder of Sushi Maki, two Congresswomen, a plastic surgeon and 19 others who have all achieved success.
This year, the auction will also spotlight the culinary arts, featuring a gourmet feast prepared by student chefs from Robert Morgan Senior High School’s award-winning culinary arts magnet program. With a charitable donation of food from Whole Foods, these junior chefs have created signature dishes using the recipes provided by respected chefs Michael Schwartz of Michael’s Genuine Food and Drink, Michelle Bernstein of Michy’s, and Cindy Hutson of Ortinique on the Mile.
For 25 years, The Education Fund has acted on the belief that the quality of our public schools must be the top priority for our community. Working side-by-side with the private sector, The Education Fund has raised more than $38 million to support and improve our public schools with an emphasis on designing and implementing innovative initiatives. The goal is to ensure that every child learns and succeeds. The Education Fund’s portfolio of programs focuses exclusively on Miami-Dade public schools, benefiting all 390 schools, all 20,000+ teachers and all 340,000 students.

“Each year the art competition grants me the opportunity to see the amazing talent and creativity of high school students. I look forward to meeting this year’s participants and congratulating them in person for their outstanding work,” said Diaz-Balart. “I want to thank the city of Hialeah for their help and support in organizing the event,” concluded Diaz-Balart.
This year marks the 29th Anniversary of the Congressional Art Competition, and Diaz-Balart has invited high schools from across the 21st District of Florida to participate.
