Save the Date to Save The World

Bayside Rocks Music & Arts Festival scheduled for Saturday,
November 19, 2011 at Bayfront Park in Downtown Miami

A star-filled tribute to music legend Bob Marley will mark a concert extravaganza as the 2nd annual Bayside Rocks Music & Arts Festival offers up a jam-packed cavalcade of stars, and a day of peace, love & unity on November 19th 2011 in Miami, Florida.

This year’s Bayside Rocks will feature world music headliners Bunny Wailer, Luciano, Tabou Combo, Cultura Profetica, Gondwana, Warrior King and The Wailers, as well as some of world music’s most promising up-and-coming talent. Plus a special tribute to the Honorable Robert Nesta ‘Bob’ Marley on the 30th anniversary of his passing.

Produced by ROCKAZ MVMT (www.rockazmvnt.com), Bayside Rocks was designed as a fun filled day of social consciousness, community and environmental awareness on a musical platform with an urgent humanitarian effort to fight poverty and feed the hungry whilst providing ecologically engineered economic transformation on a global scale.
Music, art, fashion and food from around the world provide the backdrop to a truly amazing cultural experience.

Through the universal language of music, as well as vision for the arts and cultural media, ROCKAZ MVMT and its president and CEO Alfonso D’Niscio Brooks are striving to change the world for the better by empowering people to make a positive difference.

“Our ultimate goal is to uplift the spirit and inspire people of every ilk to give of themselves to help make the world a better place in which to live,” said D’Niscio Brooks. “We’re accomplishing this task by spreading art, culture and music while raising money to end poverty, feed the hungry and shelter the homeless.”

This year, concert proceeds will include a food drive benefiting Curley’s House http://www.curleyshouse.com an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for low-to-moderate income individuals, families, the elderly, youth-at-risk, the abused, and HIV/AIDS infected individuals by providing the nutrition they need. Guests will be asked to contribute two or more cans of food as part of the cost of admission.

“Given the philanthropic nature of this event, we’re inviting all civic minded companies to join us as sponsors of this event,” D’Niscio Brooks said. “It’s a great way to get your name in front of tens of thousands of people while ensuring that hundreds of thousands of dollars are donated to a very worthy cause.”

The Bayside Rocks Music & Arts Festival is scheduled for Saturday November 19, 2011 at Bayfront Park in Downtown Miami.

For additional information about corporate sponsorships and ticket sales for the 2011 Bayside Rocks Music & Arts Festival contact Margaret Kessler at 954-284-4819 or email her at media@rockazmvmt.com

If you can dream of a better world, you can make it happen.

For Alfonso D’Niscio Brooks, the driving force behind ROCKAZ MVMT, turning that dream into reality has become a vocational signature. Through the universal language of music, as well as a vision for the arts and cultural media, Alfonso has tapped into the social consciousness to uplift the spirit and inspire people of every ilk to give of themselves to help make the world a better place in which to live.

ROCKAZ MVMT produces a series of entertaining and fun-filled music/arts events around the world, all custom-tailored for the enjoyment of families and individuals of all ages and musical tastes. These masterful events feature multiple headliner acts, as well as some of the world’s most promising up-and-coming talent. Music, art, fashion and food from around the world provide the backdrop to a truly amazing cultural experience.

As befits its world-changing raison d’etre of empowering people to help people, ROCKAZ MVMT also is committed to changing the world through sound environmental practices. All ROCKAZ MVMT events incorporate myriad green initiatives (minimizing waste, recycling, etc.).

In the US, each spring ROCKAZ MVMT hosts the Miami Reggae Festival in Coconut Grove. With summer comes the annual Carifest NYC in New York City. And in the fall, Bayside Rocks Festival brings world music to downtown Miami. A fourth annual festival is slated to be inaugurated in Miami during Winter 2012. Additional festivals fill out the ROCKAZ MVMT calendar of events in North America.

But it takes more than great music to turn the dream of a better world into a reality. That’s why proceeds from ROCKAZ MVMT events are donated to established non-profit organizations that fight poverty, house the homeless and feed the hungry in the US and abroad. In fact, patrons are asked to bring at least two items of non-perishable food as a part of the cost of admission.

Changing the world for the better is an ongoing process in which ROCKAZ MVMT is proud to be a part. But perhaps the greatest gift we can offer people – and ourselves – is the empowerment that comes from knowing you can make a difference, and that we are in fact, making a difference.

IKO IKO with very special guest, Jeff Zavac, in Concert for an Evening of Blues, Rock, and Urban Swamp Music at The Big Easy in Downtown Hollywood, FL on Friday, July 22, 2011

Iko-Iko, Miami’s original “Urban Swamp Blues” band will perform a special concert event when Jeff Zavac (saxophonist with Aretha Franklin, The Murphys, solo artist) joins the band onstage at The Big Easy in downtown Hollywood, FL. A native of Toledo, Ohio, Zavac spends much of his time in South Florida after music industry legend Henry Stone handpicked him for his Miami-based record label. A gifted signature artist, Zavac was born without his eyesight, and his releases with Stone’s label include Instrumental Magic for The Miami Lighthouse for The Blind.

This is a very rare opportunity to hear Zavac perform in South Florida and, according to Iko-Iko frontman Graham Wood Drout, “the band is really excited to be able to bring this show to The Big Easy. Musically, this is the ‘real thing’ and not something you can hear everyday.” The performance will be a FREE SHOW.

Reserved seating is available (and recommended) by calling (954) 924-3006.

Highlighting more than 30-years, IKO-IKO’s Graham Wood Drout received multiple awards including both Song of the Year from The Blues Critics Choice Awards, Best Blues Band and Songwriter of the Year from New Times Magazine and a Jammy Award for Best Blues Band. The band has performed with music legends of all styles including Bo Diddley, Jimmy Buffett, Ron Wood, Ivan Neville and many others. Blues Revue Magazine describes their music as “Soul filling ideas that flow out of [Drout’s pen and into the heart of the listener…the result is breathtaking.”

With top ten songs on XM, Sirius, MusiChoice, AAA, Hot AC, and internet radio around the world, Iko-Iko continues to draw fans to their live shows. Artists of all genres cover Drout’s songs and Living Blues magazine included The Bittersweet Sessions in the top 20 CDs of 2008. Drout reached #1 on MusicChoice with The Ghosts of Mississippi, and #2 on the Contemporary Blues Radio charts with Big Toe – both performed by Albert Castiglia on his release, A Stone’s Throw, that tied for second place as 2006 Blues CD of the Year on Sirius Radio networks. Today, the band is more energetic, vibrant and musical than ever with live shows that will reassure anyone that their mojo is definitely workin’!

The Big Easy Bar and Grille is Hollywood, Florida’s only venue for live Jazz and Blues music. They feature some of the hottest entertainment weekly from Wednesday through Sunday. In addition to supporting and showcasing the best music, their acclaimed kitchen showcases a variety of its own. The classic comfort foods and American fare combine with a cajun flair that is the perfect accent to the live music. The Big Easy has a great reputation for some of the friendliest servers and staff in town as well as bringing it all to you at prices let the good times roll! Dine indoors, outdoors on our covered patio, or alfresco along the neighborhood’s sidewalk of Downtown Hollywood.

The Main Street Players is pleased to announce its upcoming production of Extremities by William Mastrosimone. This riveting, thought-provoking drama about a woman, Marjorie, who escapes her would-be rapist and then metes out her own justice has been intriguing and gripping audiences for twenty years, all the time demanding that we examine our own attitudes towards crime and the justice system. As Marjorie’s justice becomes more and more like revenge, the arrival of her two roommates forces all four people – rapist, victim, and bystanders – to examine where we draw the line between intent and action, and between what is justifiable and what is not. The play contains adult content and strong language, and parents are cautioned.

Only 240 of these exquisite bottles are in existence and will be unveiled, offered as tastings and available by the bottle ($450) or 2-ounce glass ($32) the night of the dinner, July 21.

Tequilier Heriberto Ovideo traveled to Amatitán, Mexico, believed to be the birthplace of Tequila, to nurture and select specially crafted double-barrel reposado Tequila from the House of Herradura distillery that would be reserved for The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami. The process began in 2010 with 100 percent blue Weber Agave tequila “resting” in toasted oak barrels for 11 months before maturing in a second hand-made barrel. Finally in April 2011, Ovideo journeyed to the distillery to taste and choose the best of three barrels awaiting his arrival. The preferred barrel captured smooth, light, earthy flavors and was hand-bottled at Casa Herradura.

In 2006, his new recording, Fostered, was released. Fostered features all original compositions, including the award-winning “Avila”.

Silvano composed, performed & co-produced two songs, including the title track, of the 2008 GRAMMY-nominated album, “The Magician”, by Sammy Figueroa & His Latin Jazz Explosion. This wonderful CD was nominated as “Best Latin Jazz Album of the Year”.

The Fourth World Ensemble, emerging in 2007 from Monasterios’ desire to experiment with the fusion of Latin Rhythms, World Music and Pure Jazz, features Monasterios on piano, accompanied by percussion, drums, bass and saxophone. The ensemble performs all original music composed and arranged by Silvano. This year saw the release of their new CD, Unconditional, on Savant Records. Exhibiting an insatiable appetite for challenge and change, Silvano has recorded eight new and imaginative compositions. While this latest work is likely destined to be classified as “Latin Jazz” with its assortment of indigenous percussion instruments and rhythms, it is totally devoid of the Latin clichés often encountered in pseudo-Latin jazz. Instead, it showcases an artist with a complete understanding of his complex Venezuelan roots, who is aware of the Austro-Germanic-European compositional heritage and who, at the same time, is steeped in the great American jazz tradition.

Photographs from SXSE 2011 trip to Key West on 7/16-17/11

SXSE 2011 trip to Key West on Saturday, July 16th through Sunday, July 17, 2011.

Our good friend and veteran writer/blogger, Maria de los Angeles, sets up and runs a social media retreat every year called South by Southeast (SXSE). This year it took place in Key West and gave us a way to rationalize a mini-vacation, since it was technically “working”.

In addition, she got Chevrolet/GM Southeast to hook us up with a cool Chevy Equinox (dubbed the “Soulmobile” for the weekend). It is a very nice vehicle and made the drive much more enjoyable.

A big shoutout goes to our host hotel, the Eden House. What a fun, quaint place. It has a very historic, homey feel and some nice amenities (like the “serve yourself” library). A wonderful place to relax.

On the way down, we decided to stop at a small place called Evelyn’s for breakfast. True homestyle cooking in Key Largo. If you aren’t looking, you’ll miss it, but it is definitely worth a try.

The main event of the SXSE was the Saturday night Pub Crawl. Maria had set us up at the The Rum Barrel to start, then at the Green Parrot with a performance by PALO! for the ending of the evening. A stop by Mallory Square for sunset is always mandatory.

Sunday, the Soulmobile made a run over to Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. This is one of our favorite places in Key West. It has the best beach (though that is only relative to other Key West beaches), a great cafe, nice nature trails, decent (though not spectacular), easy and cheap snorkeling, and the cool, historic fort.

On the way home, we stopped by Porky’s for lunch. Then it was on to Rum Runners for drinks and waiting out the storm.

A great time was had by all. SXSE truly puts the SOCIAL back in Social Media! Hope to see you all next year.

For additional images and commentary, be sure to check out the SXSE Facebook Page. Follow SXSE on Twitter. Find more photos on the SXSE Flickr. And we hope to see you next year!

It’s a Disco Thing 7/20/11

July 20, 2011, 9PM-1AM
Segafredo L’Originale
1040 Lincoln Road
Miami Beach, FL 33139
www.sze-originale.com

Disco was influenced by (but not only) funk, Latin and soul music. The disco sound has soaring, often reverberated vocals over a steady “four-on-the-floor” beat, an hi-hat pattern with an open hi-hat on the off-beat, and a prominent, syncopated electric bass line sometimes consisting of octaves. The Fender Jazz Bass is often associated with disco bass lines, because the instrument itself has a very prominent ‘voice’ in the musical mix. In most disco tracks, strings, horns, electric pianos, and electric guitars create a lush background sound. Orchestral instruments such as the flute are often used for solo melodies, and unlike in rock, lead guitar is rarely used. Well-known late 1970s disco performers included Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor, The Bee Gees, A Taste of Honey, Candi Station, KC and the Sunshine Band, Chic, and The Jacksons. Donna Summer would become the first well-known and most popular disco artist, giving her the title ‘The Queen of Disco’, and also played a part in pioneering the electronic sound that later became a part of disco.

Last but not least, Disco fashion was very trendy in the late 1970s. Discothèque-goers often wore expensive and extravagant fashions for nights out at their local disco, such as sheer, flowing Halston dresses for women and shiny polyester Qiana shirts for men with pointy collars, preferably open at the chest, often worn withdouble-knit polyester shirt jackets with matching trousers known as the leisure suit. Necklaces and medallions were a common fashion accessory.

Next@19th
137 NE 19th Street
Miami, FL 33132

Admission is free and this event is open to the public.

Gender identity questions surface recently as the buzz of “Baby Storm,” the infant being raised gender-neutral, hits the media. On Wednesday, July 20, 2011, Elizabeth Schwartz moderates Next@19th’s gender secrecy debate, a topic that sweeps the nation as an increasing number of families choose to conceal their children’s gender identities in effort to raise them in a gender-neutral environment.

In a format modeled after the ancient Sanhedrin which legislated Jewish law, ideas will be introduced by a central facilitator and put to audiences for debate. Join the Next@19th community as they discuss how the Jewish culture and this new controversial way of parenting can influence your child’s upbringing.

About Next@19th: Moving Jewish Culture Forward
Next@19th was founded in July 2010 to engage South Florida’s diverse community in fresh culture, learning and spiritual experience through a Jewish lens. Producing original programming, the organization will host a range of events and activities. This 2010 – 2011 season promises celebrations of music, literary arts, visual art, education and spirituality as well as dynamic projects in partnership with Miami Book Fair International, the Jewish Film Festival and University of Wynwood. Next@19th is located at 137 NE 19 Street, Miami FL 33132, on the campus of Temple Israel’s historic site in downtown Miami. Opening Production at Miami Beach Stage Door Theatre at Byron Carlyle
Is a Baby Boomer’s Delight

Combining the best songs of the Baby Boomer era with a lot of humor, a stellar cast and a veteran technical team, “Suds” is the ideal choice for Miami Beach Stage Door Theatre’s debut at the landmark Byron Carlyle in Miami Beach. The show begins its run on Friday, July 29 and continues through Sunday, September 4.

The highly anticipated opening of the Miami Beach Stage Door Theatre will not disappoint! Derelle Bunn and David Torres, co-founders of the Broward Stage Door Theatre, their flagship theatre in Coral Springs, are widely known for producing large-scale, award-winning musicals. The theatre received a Carbonell Award for Best Production of a Musical in 2011, and with the opening of “Suds” at the Byron Carlyle, they bring their 19 years of successful theatre production experience to Miami Beach.

“Suds” features more than 40 hits from the ‘60s, with the accompaniment of a live three-piece band. From “Chapel of Love” to “Johnny Angel,” “Suds,” will take you back to your first kiss, your first make-out session under the boardwalk or your first ride in a GTO. The music serves as a fun-loving backdrop for the hilarious story of three girls trying to find love in a laundromat, and it bubbles over with fun!

The show’s previous run at the Broward Stage Door Theatre garnered rave reviews, and while originally scheduled to run there for six weeks, it was so successful that it was extended for six months. With the same production team for “Suds” at the Miami Beach Stage Door Theatre, the show will certainly maintain the Stage Door’s high level of excellence.

“Opening in the summer, we wanted to kick off the season with a light, fun musical production, continuing our tradition of presenting the best in musical theatre,” says Derelle Bunn. “We are looking forward to our new second home and to working with the area businesses to make North Beach a thriving destination for locals and tourists alike.”

Technical Credits: Award-winning director/actor Dan Kelley, a fixture on the local theater scene for 25 years, directs “Suds.” He is often recognized from his appearance on the pilot of Burn Notice and is a regular on the HGTV series My House is Worth What? Bill Hirschman, theatre critic at the Sun-Sentinel, praised Dave Nagy for his musical direction of “Suds.” “As musical director, Nagy has masterfully led the quartet in creating nougat smooth harmonies…The entertainment is as comfortable as a pair of saddle shoes.” The set is crafted by Stage Door Scenic, Lighting by Ardean Landhuis and Costumes by Costume World, the world’s largest costume house.

Following “Suds,” South Florida arts patrons are in for an exciting 2011-2012 season of award-winning musicals, beginning with “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” The season’s roster also includes “Lend Me a Tenor,” “Guys and Dolls,” Irving Berlin’s “I Love a Piano,” “Annie,” Neil Simon’s funniest and most famous comedy “Last of the Red Hot Lovers,” the all-time favorite “My Fair Lady,” “The All Night Strut!” and “Little Shop of Horrors,” one of the longest running Off-Broadway shows of all time.

Fuego and Los Hermanos Rosario Merengue Night Marlins Super Saturday 7/23/11

Fuego And Los Hermanos Rosario Teaming Up For Merengue Night Edition Of Marlins Super Saturday
July 23, 7:10 p.m.
Sun Life Stadium
2267 Dan Marino Blvd.
Miami, 33056

On July 23, Baker Concrete Marlins Super Saturday will feature an exciting post-game performance by FUEGO and the Dominican merengue band Los Hermanos Rosario. First pitch versus the New York Mets is set for 7:10 p.m. at Sun Life Stadium (2267 Dan Marino Blvd., Miami, 33056). Merengue band Oro Solido will also be on-site signing autographs pregame at the Strike Zone and throwing out the first pitch. The first 10,000 fans will receive a Florida Marlins All-Star Poster courtesy of Franklin Communications.

Urban/tropical artist Miguel Duran, better known as FUEGO, recently released his long-awaited album, La Música del Futuro. The hit single “Que Buena Tu Ta” song is a fusion of “Urban Mambo” with a touch of Indian featuring Deevani, who’s known for her Hindi vocals in songs with Daddy Yankee, Tito “El Bambino” and Beenie Man. FUEGO’s summer hit, “Super Estrella” features Omega and continues to rise in the popularity charts. Also, his latest song, “Mi Alma Se Muere” featuring Pitbull and Omega has received close to two million visits on his YouTube page. Fuego has worked with major artists like Don Omar, Rick Ross, Omega, Serani and Pitbull.

Dominican merengue group Los Hermanos Rosario originally consisted of brothers Toño, Pepe, Rafa and Luis Rosario. Since childhood, the brothers created music even with self-made instruments such as bottle caps, plastic containers, pots and pans. They formed in the Dominican Republic city of Higuey in May 1978. The 14-piece orchestra has had a series of very successful albums among those are “Los Hermanos Rosario, 1983,” “Bomba Mi Hermano, 1990 ” “Insuperables, 1991” “Los Dueños del Swing 1995” and “Bomba, 2000.” Although Toño Rosario left the group for his solo career, Pepe, Rafa and Luis, Rosario continue to perform and tour across the globe.

Each of the Marlins’ 11 Saturday home games this year is designated as a “Super Saturday.” The highlight of each “Super Saturday” is a post-game concert/show featuring internationally-acclaimed recording artists. The post-game performance is free with each ticket purchased for that evening’s game. Baker Concrete Super Saturdays also include pregame parties at The Strike Zone at Gate H featuring celebrity, player and alumni autograph sessions, appearances from Billy The Marlin, Lil’ Billy, the Mermaids and Manatees, special prizes, live TV/radio broadcasts and giveaways.

Fans can enhance their “Super Saturday” experience by purchasing VIP “Pit Passes.” Available for $25 each at www.marlins.com/supersaturdays, the passes provide on-the-field access to the post-game concert. For more information on Super Saturdays and to purchase tickets, call 1-877-MARLINS or visit the Marlins’ official websites at www.marlins.com and www.marlinsbeisbol.com.

House Sundays in Miami Grand Opening 7/24/11

Sunday, July 24th.
Villa 221
221 NE 17th Street
Miami, FL 33132.

House Sundays is a new gay Sunday night in Miami with a Grand Opening on Sunday, July 24th.

The venue is a house that has been turned into a nightclub and event space. (It is actually two houses connected). They opened about eight months ago and have been asking Edison Farrow / SoBeSocialClub.com to be involved with a gay night since they opened. But, at the time he already had three weekly events and was not able to add any new nights to his schedule. Recently, Buck15 got involved with the house. They now have one house which they call “Buck House”.

House Sundays will be a fun house party! There are several different rooms. So, it can have a different feel each week depending on which rooms are open. There is a front yard with lounge chairs, and a front porch. One side has a bar and DJ. The other side has a bar in the former dining room and a DJ by the fireplace. The upstairs has been transformed into a stunning art gallery.

The house is located just off of 17th Street and Biscayne Boulevard. It is the first house behind the Burger King. It is three blocks north of the Arsht Center and two blocks west of the Venetian Causeway to Miami Beach. The address is 221 NE 17th Street Miami, FL 33132.

Nikki Beach Lifestyle presents What Women Want By Betty Alvarez

On this hot summer day, I went over to Nikki Beach to catch the tail end of What Women Want. Even though the fashion show was over, but there were still the likes of the models and beautiful women which I took the opportunity to photograph. On this day, fashion shows by Azucar, Robert Graham, ICandy Swimwear, Adame, Nikki Beach Lifestyle BEDE Watoes and Le Doux strutted the run way.

L’Occitane gave out samples and demonstrations of their line while other beauty demonstrations were also given during the event.

A Wynwood Photo Essay by Ralph Ventura

{A Guest Article by Photographer and Writer Ralph Ventura.}

Tomorrowland
by Ralph Ventura

Urban, hip, gritty, gentrified, artsy, blue-collar, new, and decaying. Wynwood is a place that defies description and one that presents us with a paradox.

Wynwood had it’s origins in the great Puerto Rican migration of the 1950’s. People came here in droves seeking a better life for themselves and their families, seeking a better tomorrow. Like immigrants before them, they founded a neighborhood that met their needs and reflected their character, all within the limited resources available to them. Through the years, Wynwood remained an island of genuineness in a city that was constantly being remade. It was an area apart.

As with many areas where rents are low and warehouse space plentiful, Wynwood eventually attracted artists. The artists in turn attracted the galleries, which in turn attracted collectors, dealers, restaurants, bars and speculators, all in search of their own tomorrow. Where once much of the neighborhood stood as an example of urban decay, it is now an example of “urban-chic”. The hipsters and the yuppies (can we still use “yuppie” in the 21st Century?) abound. If you look carefully enough, you’ll be just as likely to see young moms carefully cradling their infants as college kids carefully cradling their vintage 1980 Canon A-1s (you know, the one from the Winter Olympic Games?). Of course, this is all you’ll see as long as you stay on the main drags.

Venture just a little bit east or west of Miami Avenue or Second Avenue and you’ll encounter another Wynwood, one where the locals still live. La Boricua Restaurant, La Perla Bar, Guanabacoa Market and many single family houses, duplexes and courtyard apartments reveal a Wynwood that is very urban but not at all “chic”. Not much has changed, here. The locals live and love much as they have for fifty years, each in search of their slice of America, each hoping for their own better tomorrow for themselves and their children.

So, what to make of Wynwood? Well, that leads us to the paradox. For all its recent strides, Wynwood still is an example of urban decay. Many structures are boarded up; many that aren’t are in very poor states of repair nonetheless. Fix it, clean it up, paint it, . . . gentrify it? Still, if we turn the urban decay into urban chic what will happen to the locals? What will happen to their Tomorrowland?

Club Space: Pinnacle of the Megaclub

I LOVE Club Space. I’ve been going there for years and was a weekly regular at one point. It’s an unruly beast, however, so to optimize your Club Space experience, consider the following.

It is one of the most longstanding clubs in Miami and one of the best known clubs in the world. Yeah, they kinda ripped the name off Space Ibiza, but it’s a minor offense so try to find it in your heart to forgive LP and his crew. You’ll be glad you did.

Your heart will flutter. Your mouth will salivate. You will begin to feel beads of sweat forming on your chest. Your body will pulsate with the bass, thumping through every fiber of your being. And you will have not even entered the club yet, because all that is just the anticipation you feel when crossing the threshold is imminent.

You will hear Alan T. before you see him, but you’ll know him when you do. Don’t even try to beg a favor if you don’t know him or aren’t dressed in the chicest of fashions. You may catch a glimpse of the entertainment for the night: gorgeous go-go dancers made up in costumes dreamt up by the craziest of minds.

As you get ready for your visit, consider the door policy. It is one reason why I love Space so much. The general idea is “come as you are.” Wanna wear a hat? Ok. Sporting your college tee? Sure. Prefer to wear sneakers? Damn right! You better wear shoes because this place gets nasty. No door drama here, because if your money (or your credit) is good, you’re welcome at Space. Yes, there can be a line, but it moves fast (WMC notwithstanding).

Don’t be an ass to the door staff. You don’t know them, so don’t call out to them, even if your cousin’s babysitter’s mother-in-law told you one of their names. They don’t care. Wait your turn, do as you are told, and you will be given your chance. Don’t complain about the entrance fee, because if you don’t want to pay it, there are hundreds of other people who will.

Know what to expect. This is a huge club with an extremely loud sound system and an exceptionally sophisticated lights and visuals show. It’s dark and there’s nowhere for you to sit unless you buy bottles. It’s a DANCE club, after all, so give that a shot. Bring cash, because you will be served more quickly and you really don’t want a bartender in a dark club holding on to your credit card (or worse, debit card) and ID anyway. Be nice to your bartender (and patient) and you will be served efficiently with strong drinks for a fair price.

Don’t bring anything dangerous, don’t start shit with the bouncers, don’t try to skip out on your bill, and don’t even THINK about bringing illegal substances into the club. They are strict at Space because they are nightlife pros, and if you’re just here to have a good time, that should make you feel more comfortable, not less.

Space brings top DJs from all over the world, so figure out who’s spinning at what time when you go. Go upstairs; the terrace is primo at sunrise, even as a solarium. The club has a 24-hour liquor license and will stay open as long as people are spending money.

Those who complain about the prices at Space should consider for a moment what one month’s FPL bill might look like at a warehouse that size. Or payroll taxes for the entire staff. Or, most of all, DJ fees for some of the biggest names in the world.

Bottom Line: Space is the pinnacle of the megaclub in this country. You simply must go, at least once. A visit to Space is, and was designed to be, an experience.

Tropical Symphony concert with Nationall Ballet of Colombia and Amadeus Youth Orchestra from Medellin 7/16/11

Saturday, July 16, 8 p.m.
Broward Center for the Performing Arts

Energizing Concert Breaks Boundaries between Classical and Tropical Music;
Media Invited to Attend Pre-Concert Ceremony Reaffirming first Sister Cities Relationship

The Broward Center for Performing Arts, a cultural partner in the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment (A&E) District, will be buzzing with activity on Saturday, July 16 when the 50-year Sister City relationship between Fort Lauderdale and Medellin, Colombia will be commemorated with the Tropical Symphony concert in the Au-Rene Theater. Featuring dancers from the prestigious National Ballet of Colombia, this special event brings together Claudia Diez and her orchestra, TONO 40, and the renowned Amadeus Youth Orchestra from Medellin for an evening not to be missed. The Tropical Symphony Concert breaks the boundaries of classical and popular music and gives new meaning to the concept of a tropical orchestra. With an exciting fusion of music and folkloric dance, this special event promotes the rich cultural identity of Colombia.

Celebrated as one of the world’s premier dance companies, Ballet de Colombia, established by Sonia Osorio, has delivered its love for its country’s culture throughout the world for 50 years. The first folkloric ballet established in Colombia, Ballet deColombia is a celebration between dance and music, and marries the rituals of the country’s folkloric history with the athleticism and majesty of its dancers. These elements are combined with colorful costumes and vibrant music to create an electrifying performance.

Established in 1998 as a music school that reached out to children from the underprivileged neighborhoods of Medellin, the Amadeus Youth Orchestra’s talented ensemble has traveled throughout Latin America, the U.S. and Europe, performing before noted dignitaries including Pope John Paul II. The first youth symphonic orchestra in Colombia, the Amadeus Youth Orchestra encourages its performers, ages 10-17, to nurture a love and appreciation for music through learning and exploration. This will be their first appearance in South Florida.

Tickets for the Tropical Symphony concert range from $30-$100 and are available through the Broward Center for the Performing Arts Box Office or online at www.browardcenter.org. The concert begins at 8 p.m. and takes place in the Au-Rene Theater.

The concert is presented by Claudia Diez with support from Nova Southeastern University, Ana G. Mendez University, and Coordi Util along with many throughout the Colombian community.

“We are delighted that the Tropical Symphony concert will take place at the Broward Center for Performing Arts during the city of Fort Lauderdale’s Centennial year,” said Carmen Ackerman, project manager for Riverwalk A&E District. “The Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District supports and promotes the international cultural ties between Fort Lauderdale and cities around the globe, and we’re honored that the Broward Center was selected as the venue for this exciting event.”

Prior to the concert, members of the media are invited to attend the 6:00 pm signing ceremony where a reaffirmation of the commitment between these two Sister Cities will take place. The ceremony will be attended by local government officials, business, community leaders, and international delegates from Medellin, Colombia at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in the Abdo New River Room. The agreement symbolizes the continuing friendship between the two cities, as well as the commitment to strengthen cultural, educational and economic ties between the State of Florida and the region of Antioquia in Colombia, of which the capital is Medellin. Sister Cities International is a Citizens Diplomacy network with a strong presence across the U.S. The Greater Fort Lauderdale Sister Cities International has made greatefforts to foster partnerships with 17 cities throughout the world. The partnership with the City of Medellin is the first Sister City relationship established by the City of Fort Lauderdale

The Adrienne Arsht Center Presents Cirque Éloize iD 7/26/11

Opens July 26
Ziff Ballet Opera House
Adrienne Arsht Center
www.cirque-eloize.com

www.Arshtcenter.org/CirqueiD.

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County presents the critically-acclaimed international sensation Cirque Éloize iD.

Hip-hop, graffiti and mind-blowing acrobatics make for an urban spectacle to sizzle
in Miami this summer!

Now celebrating its Fifth Anniversary Season, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County proudly announces its 2011 summer blockbuster – CIRQUE ÉLOIZE iD – a spectacular, mind-blowing fusion of new theatrical circus and urban dance created by the great contemporary cirque director JEANNOT PAINCHAUD. CIRQUE ÉLOIZE iD opens on July 26 and recently extended its stay to September 4 due to great demand.

CIRQUE ÉLOIZE iD is the seventh original production from CIRQUE ÉLOIZE. CIRQUE ÉLOIZE and Cirque du Soleil have engaged in a long-term relationship based on common creative visions and international entertainment appeal.
Through large-scale projections evocative of the streets of Calle Ocho, the Port of Miami and the graffiti walls of the Wynwood design district, audiences at CIRQUE ÉLOIZE iD will be immediately immersed in a metropolis very much like Miami— a city perpetually transforming itself in the process of finding a new identity. The stage of the Ziff Ballet Opera House will come alive with the boundless energy of acrobats, break dancers, contortionists and a fearless stunt biker who perform against a kaleidoscope of eye-popping video drawn from science-fiction films, comic books and graffiti.

An exciting, moving, and unforgettable modern circus blending the daring soundtrack of rock, hip-hop, and electronica with the romantic heart of West Side Story, iD showcases the unique talents of a troupe of over 16 international artists—masters of hand-to-hand acrobatics, contortion, in-line skating, hip-hop, modern dance, break dance, and Cyr wheel all leading up to a stunning finale on the one-of-a-kind video trampowall. Click here to watch a video.
“Cirque Éloize iD explores the concept of identity and how people from different backgrounds get along in a clan,” explains Painchaud. “Each artist represents a unique character that highlights the human spirit and the diversity of the human condition. “

As each distinct personality begins to emerge, the setting of iD is transformed into a place where—like Miami itself—diversity is nurtured, friendships are forged, love is created and identity is embraced.

TICKETS
Tickets to CIRQUE ÉLOIZE iD go on sale to members on April 12 and to the general public on May 19. Tickets start at $25 and may be purchased through the Adrienne Arsht Center box office by calling (305) 949-6722, or online at www.arshtcenter.org.*

Hailed by the Montreal Gazette as “a thrilling piece of work, full of attitude, energy and invention,” iD was created by Jeannot Painchaud, founder and artistic director of Montreal’s acclaimed CIRQUE ÉLOIZE, and has sold out in Montreal and Toronto. The high-energy all-musical spectacle (there’s no spoken word), features an original electronic score composed by Jean-Phi Goncalves (from the indie band Beast) and Alex McMahon, which features a Spanish-language hip-hop number among other electropop, dance, and vocal tracks. The creative team also features hip-hop choreographer Mourad Merzouki and costumes by Linda Brunelle.

iD is the seventh original production from CIRQUE ÉLOIZE. Since it began in 1993, Cirque Éloize has become a world leader in contemporary circus arts, with almost 4,000 performances in more than 400 cities around the globe to its credit. The award-winning company has enjoyed rave reviews and sold-out engagements at the world’s most prestigious festivals and theatres including Edinburgh International Festival, the Hollywood Bowl, Théâtre du Rond-Point des Champs-Élysées, Sadler’s Wells and the Barbican Theatre.

The Board of Directors of the Florida Museum for Women Artists Cordially invites you to attend the Membership Preview Opening of Witness to Creativity II

Watching art being made can be very inspiring. It allows the viewer to see the process in action instead of just the finished product. Such an opportunity begins on Friday, July 15th. Eleven art installations will be in-process through the weekend culminating in an exhibition that will remain in place until the first week of September. The public can engage the artists about their projects, work methods and messages. There will be an interesting mix between artists and visitors which is a great way to have art understood. Thurs., Aug 18, 201

Miami Beach, FL

Patty Ascher and Zoho Music are pleased to announce upcoming tour dates in support of her new ZOHO CD “Bossa, Jazz ‘n’ Samba”

“Bossa, Jazz ‘n’ Samba” (Zoho 201103) Street Date: April 12, 2011
Brazilian singer Patty Ascher holds a bachelor’s degree in Literature from the University of São Paulo (USP), but she has always had the music in her life. Her father Neno was part of a very successful Brazilian band from the 70s, Os Incríveis (The Incredibles), and she has an uncle who works with many Brazilian popular artists.

In 2007, Ascher released her debut album, Bacharach Bossa Club, produced by the great Roberto Menescal. The album featured Ascher’s versions of famous Burt Bacharach songs with bossa nova arrangements and was a best seller on Uol, the biggest internet portal in Brazil. The album was also released around the world.

Ascher’s new album, Deu Jazz no Samba (Jazz in Samba), is a collection of 11 exquisite songs, most of them written by the singer with co-writers Marco Ponte and Ronaldo Rayol. Many great Brazilian musicians participated in this album, and Ascher says the disc is, in a way, a tribute to them. “We have so many talented musicians in Brazil, so we thought about making Deu Jazz no Samba a tribute to them. For me, it’s an honor to be able to have so many incredible players on the same team.”

With the talent, personality, and elegance of Dori Caymmi, Amilson Godoy, Jota Morais, Eduardo Lages, Gilson Peranzetta, Aluisio Pontes, and Cristovão Bastos – some of the great names that participate in this work – and Ascher’s one-of-a-kind voice, the final result is an album filled with pop and jazz with a bit of bossa and some Latin ballads. Roberto Menescal – a famous Brazilian songwriter and Ascher’s mentor – was the Production Supervisor on the album, and he played his bossa-jazz-guitar on the track “Sunrise,” Ascher’s English version of the Brazilian song Amanhecendo, from writers Lula Freire and Menescal. “Summer Knows,” by Marilyn and Alan Bergman and Michel Legrand, has arrangements by Dori Caymmi and is a tribute to another important musician and inspiration in Ascher’s career – the French orchestra conductor, pianist, and composer Michel Legrand, who is a three-time Oscar winner, and with whom she toured around Brazil in 2008 and 2009.

Famed local jazz artists make noise for Friday night happy hour at the Bass

The Bass Museum of Art will resume its celebrated Hot Nights Cool Jazz concert series on Friday, July 15 through August 26 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The six-week summer series will run every other Friday evening and will feature some of the best contemporary Jazz artists in South Florida.

The ever-popular happy hour and jazz night kicks off with the Martin Bejerano Trio on July 15. Martin Bejerano, a Miami native, has been active as a professional musician since the age of 15. Employing a serious technical command of the piano and a commitment to lyricism and musicality, Bejerano has continually garnered critical praise across the world.

Bejerano has performed with Grammy award-winning artist Roy Haynes, Russell Malone, the Christian McBride Band, Kenny Garrett, Lonnie Plaxico, Jimmy Heath, Ignacio Berroa, Mingus Big Band, Ira Sullivan and Marcus Strickland. He has also toured with “Jazz Reach,” a non-profit organization that presents multimedia concerts for school children across the country, educating them on the history of jazz music as an American art form.

Martin Bejerano will perform with his trio consisting of Josh Allen on bass and Reinier Guerra on drums.

On July 29, the series continues with Silvano Monasterios and the Fourth World Ensemble. Voted “Best Jazz Musician in Miami” by the Miami New Times in 2009, pianist-composer Monasterios began his professional career at the age of 18. A true piano prodigy, Monasterios has become one of the most admired and requested piano jazz players in Miami.

Monasterios has performed with a number of acclaimed artists including Ira Sullivan, Terumasa Hino & the World Jazz All-Stars, Othello Molineaux, Dave Liebman, Melton Mustafa, Marc Johnson, Donald Byrd, Alan Harris, Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, Nathen Page, Randy Brecker, Sammy Figueroa, Paul Wertico, Mark Egan, Shakira, David Lee Roth and Nestor Torres.

Monasterios will be joined by the Fourth World Ensemble, featuring Troy Roberts on saxophone, Gabriel Vivas on bass, Rodolfo Zuniga on drums and Jose Gregorio providing additional percussion. Silvano Monasterios and the Fourth World Ensemble is presented by KCC Productions.

On August 12, the Troy Roberts Quartet will bring its signature style to the museum. Hailing from Perth, West Australia, award-winning saxophonist and composer Troy Roberts is currently based in the U.S. and on adjunct faculty at the University of Miami. He recently received his first Grammy nomination for his performance on Sammy Figueroa’s latest record, “The Magician.”

Troy Roberts will be joined by Silvano Monasterios on piano, Erick England on bass and David Chiverton on drums.

The series will conclude on August 26 with a performance by the David Siegel Quintet. As an alumnus of both New World School of the Arts and University of Miami School of Music, pianist David Siegel has performed nationally with major jazz artists including Maynard Ferguson, Nestor Torres and Arturo Sandoval. As a commercial writer and producer, his name has appeared on over 40 million records sold worldwide.

David Siegel will be accompanied by Dave Fernandez on saxophone, Fernando Ulibarri on guitar, Josh Allen on bass and John Yarling on drums.

Hot Nights Cool Jazz is free for museum members and $10 for non-members. Jazz Happy Hour offers complimentary beverages courtesy of Rex-Goliath Wines. Seating is limited.

This challenge should be on Man vs Food, it is the perfect item. The burgas was cut with a saw. That is how enormous it was.

All in all, guests enjoyed themselves with great networking and great burgers.

Joseph C. Grant Jr. presents his artwork with live jazz performance at Artway 66 by Betty Alvarez

On June 7, Joseph C. Grant Jr. presented a collection of his artwork at Artway 66 in Coconut Grove. Grant’s artwork embodies nostalgia with a figurative style of elongated human forms and vibrant colors. One of my favorite pieces was entitled Tango in Miami where the artwork showed that this city is one fun city to live in. His renderings depict life through the eyes of the black male in America by way of the Caribbean.

To accompany this spectacular artwork celebration, New York based Jazz quartet, Innovative Sounds, who played at the Presidential Inauguration in Washington DC provided the musical atmosphere for the evening.

The cocktail hour was sponsored in part by TOMA Vodka and featured Joseph’s signature drink: The “Chocolate Eyez Martini”

Artway 66 is located at 2911 Grand Avenue, Ste. 400D in Coconut Grove. Please visit www.artway66.com

Modern Masters at Barry Gross Gallery 10/8/11

MODERN MASTERS is an art exhibition showcasing the careers of three talented and accomplished artists: Painter Barry Gross, Painter/sculptor Salvatore Principe and Digital Media Pioneer Laurence Gartel. The opening reception will be Sat Oct. 8, 2011

MODERN MASTERS will be a showcase exhibition, comprising the works of three accomplished artists working in completely different mediums and styles. Painter Barry Gross, painter/sculptor Salvatore Principe and Digital Media Pioneer Laurence Gartel, whose work spans nearly 4 decades, all originally born and raised in New York and now living and working in South Florida.

Barry Gross earned his BFA at Pratt Institute and continued four years private study under David Byrd. He considers himself a self-taught artist, learning many techniques he uses today by trial and error and experimentation. He has exhibited in numerous museums and galleries including Brooklyn Museum – Brooklyn, New York; Galleria Renata – Chicago, Illinois; Fulton County Library – Atlanta, Georgia; State Capitol of Georgia – Atlanta, Georgia; The Atlanta History Center – Atlanta, Georgia; The Lowe Gallery – Atlanta, GA; Trinity Gallery – Atlanta, GA; Winter Gallery – Naples, FL; Madison Noble Gallery – Sarasota, Florida; and Caesarea Gallery, Boca Raton, FL.

Barry’s work is a powerful statement of man’s continual quest for spirituality and the beautiful expression of human physical beauty. Barry confronts the human condition on every level and this drives his passion to paint and create. The imagery and intimacy that Barry creates in his paintings emanates from dreams and visions, in which he expresses his awareness of a higher power that permeates our physical world and lights our way with its beauty.

Barry’s paintings and drawings are empowered with technique, the use of paint, the consistency of oils which seems to flow through the body to the brush, the powers of space, shape, form and color. The conclusion being in how the viewing public interacts with the work, imbued with all emotions – spiritual inspiration, humor, drama, anger or sensuality, becoming reflective and inheriting a deeper access to the canvas, becoming more involved with its theme.

Barry’s work hangs in the private collections of Richard T. Rice, Hard Rock Cafe Intl.; Steven R. Kanter, The Coca Cola Co.; Burt Reynolds; Malcolm Forbes; Sir Elton John; Mr. & Mrs. Marvin Singer, Singer Sewing Machine Co.; The Woodruff Family; Mr. & Mrs. A. D. Frazier, COO Atlanta Olympic Games, CEO Invesco, Inc.; Mr. & Mrs. Leo Mullin, CEO Delta Airlines; Hartsfield International Airport, Atlanta, Georgia and numerous commissioned pieces and individual collectors.

Barry has donated art to many charities including Breast Cancer, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Childhood Diabetes, Aids Atlanta, Center One, Mario Leumieux Foundation, Sickle Cell Anemia and local HIV organizations, including Miami Beach Community Health Center.

By contrast, the art career of SALVATORE PRINCIPE wasn’t born from formal training. It would take ten years and the death of his mother to find his soul’s desire, “to paint the world with love.” Born in New York City in 1959, Salvatore was raised in Manhattan. His parents thought he might be a pro soccer or tennis player.

But Salvatore left school early, trading school for a new playground in the streets of New York, landing a job at Studio 54 in its heyday, where he assisting the lighting technician, surrounded by Andy Warhol, Debbie Harry, Mick & Bianca Jagger, Calvin Klein, Halston, Valentino Garavani, Liza Minnelli and Elizabeth Taylor. Three years later, his lighting experience landed Principe a job at The Underground, the next “It” club of the early eighties. Salvatore longed for something more fulfilling and quit in pursuit of a deeper meaning to his existence. He had this overwhelming need to “create”.

With no training and no real tools, Salvatore Principe began creating sculpture art from objects mostly found in New York City trash heaps. His heroes became Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. Bergdorf Goodman gave Principe an exhibit in its famous window displays and this led to exhibits in Tiffany’s, Saks and Casabella. Soon, SoHo galleries were inviting him to exhibit, when his mother got cancer and died three years later at the early age of 48. To heal, Sal headed to South Florida and has never looked back. But he never forgot his mom and her legacy of love. His method of paying homage to his mom was to paint hearts, filling the world with love. He made and sold thousands of them in so many beautiful variations over the years that he became known for them, opening a gallery in Delray, and recently launching his own line of fine wines, and designing a line of ties and clothing with his pop friendly, modern style.

Salvatore’s collectors include: Lisa de Kooning, Donald Trump, Adam Sandler, Patty Labelle, Pink, Carmen Diaz, Ralph Lauren, Jenny McCarthy, Andy Roddick, Steffi Graf, Chris Evert, Jennifer Capriati, Channing Tadum, Jenna Dewan, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Michael Recanati and Randy Falco.

LAURENCE GARTEL is considered the “FATHER” of the Digital Art movement around the world for over 35 years. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, Joan Whitney Payson Museum, Long Beach Museum of Art, Princeton Art Museum, PS 1, Norton Museum, Palm Beach Photographic Center and in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of American History, Bibliotheque Nationale Paris and the Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum, London. Gartel went to School of Visual Arts and associated with fellow student, graffiti artist Keith Haring, where he earned his BFA degree majoring in Graphics. Gartel went to CW Post College going for his MA in photography studying under Arthur Liepzig. His ABSOLUT GARTEL commission for Absolut Vodka is perhaps his most well known artwork gracing the pages of magazines such as ART in AMERICA, Artforum, Sotheby’s, Art & Auction, Art & Antiques, ArtByte, Scientific American, Technology Review, WIRED and NY Magazine. It is known as the first Digital Photograph ever ever created for this famous advertising campaign and is included in “ABSOLUT BOOK” by Richard Lewis.

Gartel has numerous monograph books on his work including “Laurence Gartel: A Cybernetic Romance” published by Gibbs Smith, (c) 1989 Utah. Laurence has spent the last several years focusing on SUPER CARS and exhibited a Ferrari based exhibition at the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery at Edison State College, Ft. Myers. He produced an oversized book by the same title, introduction written by Jason Castriota, designer of the Ferrari 599. During Art Basel Miami Beach he produced the Tesla Electric Art Roadster. The automobile caused so much attention that it went viral on the internet, now present on over 40,000 websites. Gartel created another first, wrapping a FERRARI Scuderia LIVE on the internet to over 242,000 viewers. His current project is GRAFFITI painting a classic Mercedes Benz 1971 300 SEL. Corrosion is aphotographic series by artist Rodolfo Vanmarcke, that was born in 2008 toreference the strength of contrast, the passion for the opposites and theimposition of an aesthetic over another one in order to create a canvas full ofalmost tactile textures, which allow to read between the lines an image that itwas, but that will never be again its original beauty. According to Vanmarcke, the art pieces reject any visual fidelity in theviewer to herald new shapes that go beyond traditional photography, andincorporate themselves into new mixed techniques of visual expression.

Vanmarcke’s series is the result of aparadoxical encounter between the human body (overall, the female bodyphotographed assymbol of glamour and eroticism), and textures that cohabit in our everydaylife, but that nevertheless go unnoticed.

Inhis images, a photograph of a body overcome by an act of sensuality manifeststhe thin line between pureness and impureness, between the natural and what canbecome pagan. At the same time, the sublimation of an idealized body is rescuedand humanized by means of the use of photographed textures that repeat themselveswithin the world of the things: a crack on the wall, a blotch of paint onconcrete, a rusty object, cigarette ashes or even an old and scratched fryingpan. For the artist, all of these symbolize the wear-out of life, theinevitable pass of human time, the filth of routine, and mortality.

As a result of this juxtaposition, Vanmarcke’s series initiates a battle betweenthe beautiful and the ugly, both in their own aesthetical sense, arousing anirresolute debate on the definition of a culprit: Who makes the other dirty? Moreover, who beautifies whom?

Thecombination and interplay of these constituents allow the artist to play withthe somber, the imprecise and the fleeting, where observing the art pieces doesnot only result in an aesthetical activity that pursues delight, but anactivity that is at the same time intellectual as well as sensitive. At theend, Corrosion examines how fears andillusions, delirium, utopias and fantasies become at some point ornamental, andat some other point a reflection of the unequivocal and cruel reality.

We are very excited to have her here; she is an immense talent that promises to get even bigger and better with this wonderful association” states Adam White, Gallery owner, Gallery 101.

The Jewish Nun is a coming of age time capsule portraying the journey of my youth in a deliriously emancipating musical comedy thanks to the extraordinary talents of Casey Dressler who brings it all to life and then some!” states playwright, Wendy White; “it is truly an honor to showcase The Jewish Nun as the premier play at the New Light Theatre’s new venue at Gallery 101. Special thanks to Adam White, gallery owner and fine artist for opening his doors to us!”

The Jewish Nun by Wendy White, performed by Casey Dressler is a comedic portrayal of a Jewish-American woman as she strives to find herself during her 19th year by delving into the pulsing life of Manhattan, juxtaposing the racy lifestyle of NYC with a self-imposed celibacy during an era of free-love.

This coming of age drama is a hysterical journey of close encounters of every kind filled with reckless abandon, amorous explorations and a momentous struggle between religious purity and the temptations of love and sex.

Femme de la Fire at Sidebar 7/9/11

Sidebar
210 SW 2nd Street,
Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33301.

All guests who RSVP to Events@peworldwide.com in advance will enjoy a complimentary cocktail from 10pm-12am. The first show starts at midnight and throughout the night DJ Todd Stylez will be spinning the best in TOP 40 hits and house music. So come on in and make Sidebar your Saturday destination! No fire extinguisher necessary.

All patrons must be 21 years of age to enter.

Sidebar of Downtown Fort Lauderdale introduces “Femme de la FIRE,” a new, sizzling Saturday night from 10pm until 4am with an entertainment line-up that is sure to give you a fever. Fire blowing performances, professional burlesque dancers, and the best in music and drink specials will have you burning for more!

One place that is ‘upping the ante’ in entertainment selection than any other venue in Downtown Fort Lauderdale will have you thinking, “What an experience!” Sidebar is introducing a new night for those looking for excitement. And we aren’t just talking good music and mediocre dancers. Sidebar is now featuring fire blowers and burlesque entertainment every hour starting Saturday, June 25th and every week thereafter. Appropriately named “Femme de la Fire,” the night is full of women entertaining you with burlesque dancing and fire heavy performances. As you walk up to the door, you will be greeted by beautiful girls dressed in burlesque-style attire and as you make your way over to the bar, get ready for a mind-blowing dance performance by ZHANTRA Entertainment, as seen on E! Entertainments “Sexiest Jobs in Miami.” And if that’s not enough, just outside is a fire performer putting on the ultimate show as she twirls and dances with flames. I guess when mama said, “Don’t play with fire,” it may not have stuck. But don’t worry; they are professionals, although you shouldn’t stand too close.

Over the past year, downtown Ft. Lauderdale has changed immensely from the simplistic setting of restaurants and boutiques to now what many locals call an “overly-crowded and overly-priced area.” With new clubs and expensive restaurants on the rise, the landscape of Fort Lauderdale is ever changing. But if you ask a local “Where is the best place to go for inexpensive food and drinks surrounded by a great ambiance?” they will certainly tell you one place, Sidebar in downtown Himmarshee Village, just a few blocks away from the overly- crowded scene of East Las Olas.

When it comes to Fort Lauderdale restaurants, very few have stood the test of time. Adjacent to Sidebar, Himmarshee Bar & Grille is one place you can count on for authentic cuisine in a relaxed setting. The restaurant has earned its reputation, dish by dish, for exceptional dining in Fort Lauderdale. On any given weekday, hundreds of professionals dine at Himmarshee Bar & Grille and on the weekends, the place is packed with locals who opt for a different kind of atmosphere. One where they can sit indoor or outdoor in a hassle-free environment.

John Bock, Die Schritte in.Zwolf Uhr Mittags’, 2009

Kurt Schwitters’ profound impact on art history is rarely given just recognition. A pioneering artist in the spheres of collage, sculpture, architecture and installation, Schwitters was an innovator; he set the tone for the avant-garde. At a young age in war torn Germany, Schwitters stylistically evolved through genres such as Expressionism, Dada, Constructivism, and European Avant-garde to ultimately generate his signature modus operandi, Merz. Designed as a distinctly Schwitters architectural assemblage, his transformative installation known as Merzbau is recognized today as one of the most riveting artworks of the early 20th century. Unfortunately, the Merzbau was bombed and destroyed in 1943 during WWII. Kurt Schwitters’ vast artistic impact nevertheless continues to have an influence on artists and developing movements as his multifaceted legacy lives on.

Held over due to popular demand, Fredric Snitzer Gallery will modestly aim to pay homage to the late Kurt Schwitters in their summer group exhibition MERZBAU – NOW. In this group exhibition Fredric Snitzer Gallery will present works by artists Maria Martinez-Canas, John Bock, Michael Vasquez, Christian Holstad, Ida Ekblad, Bert Rodriguez, Mauricio Gonzalez, Jessica Laino and Jose Bedia. Kurt Schwitters’ comprehensive influence on art history resonates with each of these artists uniquely. While each of the participating artists has a distinctive style of their own that has surely evolved since the early 20th century, cohesively their collages, sculptures, photographs, and installations are intertwined with the multidimensional artistic relationships that Kurt Schwitters himself explored.

Taking full advantage of the crowds drawn by the growing Wynwood Art Movement which, some might say, they have helped to create with such innovative events in Multi-Media and Multi-Art Fusion – by shear fact that Gallery 212 Miami has so aptly chosen its prime location and joined the neighborhood and local businesses in partnership to solidify the district as an up-and-coming movement nothing short of a Volcano in American and International Arts and Events – Gallery 212 Miami is clearly a strong and vital establishment in the foundation of the creation and nurturing of the quickest-growing Wynwood , Miami and “Americana” Art Movement. www.Gallery 212 Miami.com – Phone # 786.431.1957 – info@gallery212miami.com
