Event to benefit Share Our Strength’s “No Kid Hungry” Campaign

The Sun, The Sand & A Drink In Your Hand. Get your captain hats ready as Miami Beach’s award-laden neighborhood restaurant, Izzy’s Fish & Oyster, is set to celebrate the summer season with a fête, fit only for one of the world’s largest boating capitals.

To properly launch its new summer cocktail menu by Bar Captain Jaime Russo, Izzy’s Fish & Oyster’s suitably appointed “Drinks Ahoy” summer party will offer a complimentary taste of all six new drinks, each named after and inspired by common fishing boats, as well as enlist in James Beard Award-winning chef Allen Susser to create bar snacks to pair.

In addition to the bar offerings and beachside beats by Miami’s favorite DJ YSL, guests will fall hook, line and sinker for the restaurant’s classic Summer Fish Fry offering fried local fish, fried oysters, fried shrimp, onion rings and the signature seasoned waffle fries combined with unlimited Narragansett and a cup of chowder – all in the spirit of New England.

Tickets for the event will cost $35 per person and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Share Our Strength’s “No Kid Hungry” campaign, ending childhood hunger in America by ensuring all children get the healthy food they need every day.

After concluding another amazing ballet season and receiving the best scholarly critic reviews, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will travel to Indonesia to be part of the 2016 International Young Dancers Festival.

This convention will set specifically in the cities of Jakarta and Surabaya from June 14th through June 22nd. The event is conducted on annual basis since 2004 when Denmark hosted first.

Ruby Romero-Issaev, company’s Executive Director, declares that since its inception, they have participated in this festival three times in Denmark, twice in Germany, three times in Poland and currently preparing to host the upcoming 2017 event taking place in Miami which also fuses with the company’s 20th Anniversary. The cultural exchange among countries is the main focus. In addition to a vast array of performances, dance conferences and workshops displaying directors varying manners and styles will be offered. Dancers involved will get to experience different tendencies through a multi-collaborated choreography resulting in a single piece of international magnificence.

Traveling to participate in this festival in Indonesia is a great opportunity for Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida thanks to the support of the Miami Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and private funds. The American delegation is represented by our principal dancer Mary Carmen Catoya with Lillian Hill, Hinano Eto, Renee Roberts and Kayci Rodríguez. They will showcase Don Quixote Grand Pas, music by Minkus and choreography by Petipa and the variations for The Four Seasons, choreographed by Vladimir Issaev and music by Verdi. Guest artist Jun Tanabe former principal dancer for Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida and currently with Nevada Ballet in Las Vegas, will round up this production.

Director Marlupi Sijangga, a dance eminence in the history of Indonesia will graciously host and welcome Artistic Director Vladimir Issaev and his group of excellent dancers. Ms. Sijangga directs 30 dance schools in that country. As a Director of Marlupi Dance, she is also hosting represented companies such as Ballet Fouette from Polonia, Doris Topete Ballet from Guadalajara in Mexico, ESBN from Lima – Perú and Ballet Pirouette from Germany among others.

The festival includes high rank local officials of culture and the Consulate General of The United States in Surabaya, emphasizing the importance of cultural exchanges.

This summer, Manatee Lagoon will give kids a peek under the sea and the lagoon with marine-themed storytime every Thursday during Manatee Tales & More. Each specially selected story will teach children about ecosystems and wildlife through engaging tales about fish, clams, manatees and more. Manatee Lagoon’s own Manatee Master story tellers will share various colorful stories about the aquatic species that live in the Lake Worth Lagoon.

Along with the stories, hands-on craft projects will reinforce themes learned from the books. Children ages 3 to 8, under parental supervision, are invited to learn about the Lagoon and its ecosystem through story books in this free, 30-minute session.

For its 6th consecutive year, Voices For Children will be hosting a private shopping event for over 300 Miami-Dade foster children. Since 2011, Old Navy at the Shoppes at the Dadeland Mall closes their store to public so that children have the opportunity to shop in a private, VIP type setting, for their own clothing. El Tucan Presents Los Hacheros Weekend Takeover

Offering a departure from the usually scheduled shows, “Weekend Takeovers” will bring to the stage an exciting, new concert series. El Tucan hopes to enlighten Miami by providing access to unique Latin American talent. Once a month, the weekend takeover will also bring great Cuban bands from New York to perform an exclusive 3 day residency.
Performing Thursday, June 16 through Saturday, June 18, Los Hacheros will be the third installment of the weekend takeover. After two successful Weekend Takeovers this past May and April by Chino Pons y Grupo Irek and Gerardo Contino y Los Habaneros, the venue is excited to have Los Hacheros join them this month of June for the next 3 day residency.
RSVP: El Tucan has one live music and entertainment show on Thursday, and two seatings Friday through Saturday. First dinner seating offers availability at 8:00 pm and the second seating over the weekend is at 11:00 pm. Guest should arrive promptly and with all guests in attendance prior to being seated. There is a 15 minute maximum hold time for all table reservations. To request dinner reservations, please call 305-535-0065.

Tyrrhenian Blue is Antiheroes Project’s latest production, presented with the support of Artefactus Cultural Project. The piece, inspired on the life and death of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the author of the Little Prince, is a contemporary reflection on themes that have been at the core of human existence, such as war, solitude, creativity and human destiny. The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami or MOCA, is offering creative art classes for kids ages 6 through 12. These classes will each offer a different theme to help kids experiment with a variety of art and design techniques in a creative environment. The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami will launch its Summer season with the presentation of Intersectionality, a collection of works produced by approximately 50 South Florida artists as well as key artists who are based outside South Florida.

The exhibition addresses the multiplicity of social phenomena that intersect the body, including racism, sexism, homophobia and classism.

The exhibition will be on display from June 16 to August 14, 2016. The artists’ reception will be held Thursday, June 23, 7-9 pm and is open to the community.

The concept of “intersectionality” was developed in the early 1960s when depicting the experiences of African American women who were repeatedly excluded from bourgeois feminist discourse. The term was popularized by the legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989 and was predominantly used to illustrate the interconnectedness of oppressive institutions that are unable to be examined separately.

“With this exhibition we are highlighting two areas on which MOCA has focused: cutting-edge material and South Florida artists,” MOCA’s Interim Director Natasha Colebrook-Williams said. “We are proud to provide a platform for both emerging and established local artists through unique pieces and installations created for this exhibition. Conversely, MOCA is equally proud of the diversity of outlooks it is able to present with support from local artists.”

MIAMI – The Opera Atelier brings to Miami a program combining opera and contemporary dance. The original choreographies by distinguished international choreographer Leyson Ponce are elegantly woven into the riveting staging by artistic director Jorge Arcila, while the excellent cast features young artists alongside seasoned performers accompanied by musical director Daniel Daroca. Concept conceived by The Opera Atelier creative team. Xiomara Ponce, Production Manager, Virtual Scenery Design by Erasmo Colón and costume design by Luis Alonso.
Silvia Ludueña, Greisel Domínguez, Kiley Hernández René Fernandez, and Jorge Arcila, will interpret anthological scenes from Italian operas, including La Traviata, Aida, La Favorita and Giulio Cesare, besides other musical surprises.
The backdrop will be the historic 1911 J. W. Warner House, a jewel of Miami architecture, which is the seat of the Miami Hispanic Cultural Arts Center and The Opera Atelier. The audience will have a chance to experience indoor and outdoor spaces during this unique artistic experience.

The Faena, a destination synonymous with family and tradition, invites guests to their first celebration of Father’s Day at their highly acclaimed restaurants Los Fuegos and PAO. The all-day MegaRumba Colombia will bring Colombians together in Miami to celebrate their heritage. Guests with (or without!) daddy issues are invited to eat and drink their feelings away while partying alongside Dale Talde, co-host Veronica Gessa, and DJ Coco Hara, who will be spinning a soundtrack from bad-daddy rappers.

Dads’ favorite comfort foods will be plenty. At $40 per person, guests will enjoy all-you-can-eat feel-good food as well as their choice of a beer, mimosa or shot of Evan Williams whiskey. The menu includes Filipino pork chop, eggs and potatoes; The TALDE burger with maple miso bacon, Kimchee pickles and spicy mayo atop a house-ground chuck and brisket patty; grilled corn with queso fresco; Kung Pao cauliflower; a wedge salad made with srirancha (sriracha and ranch), blue cheese and pinoy-style bacon; and doughnut French toast to cure the hangovers of the sugar daddies who stayed out way past their recommended bedtimes.

Guests also have an all-you-can-drink option for $25 that includes PBRs, mimosas and the special for the day: Daddy’s Little Helper (a shot of Evan Williams and PBR). The rules for Daddy Issues brunch: bad daddies, good daddies, sugar daddies welcome.

Miami Beach’s new oceanfront lifestyle hotel, The Confidante (aka: Thompson Miami Beach), is launching its summertime Backyard BBQ monthly series with The Backyard Bayou Boil on Sunday, June 12 from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. The pool party BBQ series will be hosted in the hotel’s colorful backyard area, inclusive of a lush tropical garden, colorful poolside cabanas and bungalows, and two heated pools. The series will run through September and is open to the public.

To kick off the BBQ series, The Backyard Bayou Boil will be $30 per person and inclusive of a classic low country boil bowl (prawn shrimp, Andouille sausage, corn and potatoes), decadent and zesty jalapeño cheddar cornbread, and one beer or a glass of Louisiana Rum Punch. To stay refreshed throughout the day, guests will enjoy beer bucket specials – 5 beers for $30 – and Louisiana Punch for $10. The June 12th event will also feature live New Orleans sounds by Bad Apples Brass Band.

The Confidante’s Backyard BBQ will always be free admission, with special pricing for eats + drinks.

Future Backyard BBQ themes include shellfish fests, lobster fests, tiki parties and more. Next month’s Backyard BBQ will be on Sunday, July 10th with Freaky Tiki Tropical Luau (think whole roasted pig, banana-leaf baked whole fish and more island favorites).

Good afternoon! I am a research assistant at the Infant Development Lab at FIU under Dr. Lorraine Bahrick.

Our lab conducts federally-funded research on infant and child development. Currently, we are recruiting a select group of highly motivated and interested parents of 2 to 3-month-olds to be part of an important, new project. Mothers and their children would become part of establishing norms for the typical development of attention and perception, while also learning more about their own child’s development. Parents will be compensated with $30 each visit and $300 at the end of the study.

Miami, Fl. Portugal Tropical is an art exhibition that brings to Miami an approach to the work of three prominent Portuguese contemporary artists, who carry out their artistic views in different expressive ways but are bounded by the exoticism and sensuality of the tropics. A selection of paintings by Pedro Calapez, landscapes by Monica Miranda and ceramic sculptures by Maria Ana Vasco Costa are the core of the exhibition curated by Alda Galsterer and Veronica de Mello in Merzbau Gallery (Wynwood, Miami) from June 9th.
Calapez’ color palette proposes an approach to the tropics with expressive and dynamic lines, from the perspective of this Lusitanian artist. Meanwhile, the photographic images of landscapes delicately embroidered by Miranda offers a reading through a visual fabric that unites tropical wild nature, with a human hand holding the knitting needle. The subtle strength of Vasco Costa ceramics, remembers us that tropics also has an urban side that lives in a symbiotic way with forests, mountains and rivers.
The confluence of these artistic proposals, bonded together with an organic line by the curators, parts by the influence that Portugal receives from the tropics since years ago: music, food, dances and traditions from Africa and America, part of this country’s memories, enriched and nourished. Portuguese contemporary artists can prove it.
For Arsen Wannissian and Glauco Avila, both founders and directors of Merzbau Gallery hosting this exhibition felt very natural, but was always a very important project to achieve. Merzbau is a space dedicated to showcase an innovative program that promotes diversity in the arts, as an intense cultural exchange in our city. The exhibition is presented in partnership with REDE, a contemporary art agency that works within the artistic community in countries such as, Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Macau, Mozambique, São Tome and Principe, bringing a new perspective in the art market. Merzbau has been positioned as an international platform for curatorship and artists all over the world.
Miami, known as a cultural melting pot, seems to be the right stage for this exhibition. “We hope our city received this proposal with enthusiasm, and take this unique opportunity to see the tropical light through the eyes of these talented Portuguese artists” Wannissian said.
