Karen Finley’s rave-reviewed solo performance Unicorn Gratitude Mystery explores psychological portrayals of the power that drives American election politics. Set in the recent US political presidential landscape, it takes on citizenship, gender disparity, and abuse of power. The individual cost of public relationships at the expense of privacy becomes divisive with searing psychosexual dynamics of wit and seething revelation. The performance includes magical beings, aggressive thankfulness, and collective intimacy through Shakespearean family nation dramatic traumatics. Playing a unicorn and morphing into a Hillary-like, Trump-like being while enveloping into the blueness of the blue dress of Monica Lewinsky, Finley embodies an experimental nonlinear poetic text that creates a jolt of intuition, analysis, and unnatural disaster of the human kind. Karen Finley is a pioneering interdisciplinary artist who has performed and exhibited internationally. Her recent work includes Mandala: Reimagined Columbus Circle, an interactive walk that examines the symbols and history of Columbus Circle; Artist Anonymous, a self-help meeting for those addicted to art; Written in Sand, a performance of her writings on AIDS; Open Heart, a Holocaust memorial at Camp Gusen, Austria; and Sext Me If You Can, where Finley creates commissioned portraits inspired by “sexts” received from the public. She is the author of eight books, including her latest, the twenty-fifth anniversary edition of Shock Treatment (City Lights). Grabbing Pussy (OR Books) is forthcoming in 2018. A recipient of many awards and grants, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, she is a professor of Art and Public Policy at New York University.

Hidden secrets revealed by Barry Fellman’s Mangrove Coast photos will be on view in an invited installation at this year’s Art Miami Fair. Open free to the public during Miami Art Week, new photos from this multi-year project will be presented in a specially designed shipping container at the entrance of Art Miami. The installation, part of the Deep See project, will invite viewers into an immersive water focused experience.

Felllman’s images seduce you, inviting you closer to understand them.  As you approach they clarify into familiar forms of sea grasses and shells, while basic notions of scale and distance remain a mystery until your nose is nearly pressed against the photograph. You then realize you are looking at a wondrous and fantastic view of the shoreline, full of secrets and mysteries.

The mangrove ecosystem provides shoreline protection and serves as the economic base for the recreational and commercial activities that have made South Florida prosper.  It recycles nutrients and is the breeding and feeding grounds for hundreds of species, nurturing a wide range of marine life, amphibians, birds, and mammals.

Mangrove Coast at Art Miami is one of four invited components of the Deep See project highlighting awareness about climate change, sea level rise and marine conservation.

It has increased the visibility in the United States of crucial figures like Julio Le Parc, José Gurvich, Jorge Eielson, Lydia Okumura, Antonio Manuel, Waltercio Caldas, Ivan Contreras Brunet, Carlos Cruz Diez, and Spanish artist Elena Asins. During its 2016’s edition and thanks to its impressive programming, PINTA Miami reached record attendance of over 30,000 visitors. Its curatorial committee expanded its project to include galleries from around the globe, thereby destroying barriers and permeating through all corners of the globe. The Dean Collection and BACARDÍ present No Commission: Miami 2017, a three-day, art and music experience taking place December 7 – 9, 2017, at Soho Studios in Wynwood. No Commission is a roving experiential platform organized by The Dean Collection and BACARDÍ to forge a direct link between art and art patronage. No Commission is designed specifically to support artists in different territories around the world.

No Commission Miami 2017 casts a thematic light on “Island Might”, which suggests the power and possibility, tradition and future of a place and its people. The “ways of an island”— its functioning components and life essentials are guiding principles. We examine family, land & sea, ritual, revolution and color as elemental forces that can illuminate the roadmap for a more generous, stable fate.

The injection of immersive music performances from collaborator BACARDÍ shakes up the traditional art fair, creating a unique culture experience for visitors. Past performers have included Alicia Keys, Major Lazer, A$AP Rocky, Cardi B, DMX, Pusha T and more. There are also some fantastic artist profiles of individuals who have gone on to find tremendous success following their No Commission exhibitions.

No Commission Miami is the sixth in a series of artist support collaborations. Past editions were held in Miami, New York, London, Shanghai and Berlin where artworks were sold and artists retained 100% of sales proceeds. The No Commission platform is realized through a partnership between BACARDÍ, Swizz Beatz, and The Dean Collection in their continued support of cultural visionaries around the world.

No Commission: Miami is open via invitation only on Thursday, December 7. On Friday, December 8 and Saturday, December 9 No Commission: Miami will be open to the public from 12pm to 5pm, and from 7pm to 12am with valid registration.

Jazz at The Yard with Tal Cohen 11/29/17

Jazz at The Yard with Tal Cohen

The Wynwood Yard
56 NW 29th St,
Miami, Florida 33127

Cost: Free

Join us Wednesdays for live jazz under the stars featuring Miami local music luminaries living in our midst. These shows are each Wednesday from 8 pm – 11 pm for free at The Yard and are curated by Chad Bernstein of Guitars Over Guns.

On Wednesday, November 29th, pianist Tal Cohen pays us a very special visit at The Yard. Cohen’s unique piano style owes its roots to the Jewish folk songs and classical music he played in his formative years growing up in Israel. He later moved to Australia, where he received a music scholarship from Churchlands Senior High School. He continued his music studies at the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, where he completed a bachelor’s degree and masters in jazz performance. He began performing nationally, including Sydney’s 505 and Melbourne’s Bennett’s Lane and Uptown jazz clubs. In the same year, he also performed with New York saxophonist, George Garzone. In 2011, Tal performed at the Melbourne Jazz Festival in the “Jamie Oehlers Quartet”. That same year, Cohen released his first album as a leader “Yellow Sticker”. He’s currently studying at the University of Miami, where he’s had the opportunity to play with drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts, and West Coast-based trumpeter John Daversa. We can proudly call him a local.

In July 2011, Tal performed at the Melbourne Jazz Festival in the “Jamie Oehlers Quartet” which featured Australia’s Jamie Oehlers on saxophone as well as highly acclaimed New York drummer Ari Hoenig, and Sam Anning on bass. The group then went on to record the album “Smoke and Mirrors” after which the group toured around Australia in August 2012. Tal has also had the honor of playing with iconic modern jazz bassist, Bob Hurst in Melbourne and Perth shows in June 2012, alongside Jamie Oehlers and drummer, Jacob Evans.

Tables are pulled up near the stage for that jazzy club feel under the stars. Savor drinks from The Bar at The Yard and Charcoal Garden Bar + Grill and bites from our resident food concepts. Admission is free. #jazzattheyard

Barrett Barrera Projects, a St. Louis-based multidisciplinary consulting company specializing in arts, culture and contemporary fashion, is returning to Miami Art Week to present FANTICH & YOUNG: APEX PREDATOR | DARWINIAN VOODOO as one of the art installations the company will unveil in Wynwood during Art Basel from December 7 to 10, 2017.

Simulating a luxury lifestyle boutique, APEX PREDATOR | DARWINIAN VOODOO is a conceptual pop-up exhibition employing multimedia sculpture, photographic prints and a promotional advertising campaign to present a primeval yet contemporary collection that merges the creative disciplines of fine art, design and fashion.

Mariana Fantich, born and raised in the Ukraine, is an artist and digital media specialist and Dominic Young is an English musician and artist. Since 2008 they have collaborated under the name Fantich & Young and are currently based in London’s East End. The duo juxtaposes and manipulates symbolic ready-made objects – including Saville Row suits and Jimmy Choo shoes – in order to parallel both natural and social evolution, calling into question the theory of natural selection with nods to ceremonial ritual and the supernatural – a concept they term Darwinian Voodoo. Their Apex Predator project, an outgrowth of Darwinian Voodoo, was inspired by the 2008 financial crisis. Luxury consumer goods augmented with ritualistic items such as teeth, bones, and hair represent the banking community and its escape from criminal prosecution. The financiers thus become the titular Apex Predator – topping the food chain, facing no real threat and possessing perhaps a touch of the supernatural.

Designed for ‘‘the discerning client with the taste for power and exclusivity,” the Apex Predator collection includes shoes, masks, two-piece ensembles, perfume and other meticulously embellished accessories. All items in this luxury retail exhibition will be sold as limited-edition art sculpture (not meant to be worn as fashion items) with prices ranging from $2,000 for the “killer shoes” – a pair of black stilettos featuring soles made of teeth – to $45,000 for “Female and Male Superhumans.”

If the free-market economy is indeed a forum where only the strongest survive, and our urban habitats are a brutal jungle, Fantich & Young’s Darwinian Voodoo seems to perfectly address the needs of an exclusive clientele who reside at the very top of our society’s food chain.

Queer art films @ Miami’s favorite art fair
LGBT art and film meet in the back garden of Superfine! The Fair at the heart of Midtown Miami this December.
Join 250+ art-lovers and cinephiles in the back garden of Superfine! The Fair for a 90 minute series of short films poised directly at the intersection of LGBT themes and the contemporary art world. Curated and presented by South Florida’s own OUTshine Film Festival (formerly MiFo), you’ll enjoy a welcome addition to Miami Art Week’s generally LGBT-lacking schedule. With a constant commitment to spotlighting LGBT artists, Superfine! brings a new dimension to our Miami fair through this partnership.
Filmgoers will delight in gourmet popcorn and a complimentary craft cocktail from The Pool Bar at The Vagabond’s pop-up bar, as well as complimentary admission to our arTEA LGBT Soirée immediately following.
**Seating is limited and on a first-come first-served basis so please arrive early.

Curated Ice Cream + Delectable Works of Art
Because art collecting can be fun, join Miami’s burgeoning young collector community for a night of ice cream, conversation, and art at the third Miami edition of Superfine! The Fair.
You’ll enjoy complimentary local ice cream and a patented toppings bar while you get up close and personal with 800+ works of art curated to your taste and budget. With 70% of the artwork in Superfine! Miami priced below $5,000 and a commitment to a transparent, friendly atmosphere, we consistently encourage young professionals to begin the rewarding journey to becoming a full-fledged art collector (without the stuffiness and barriers of the typical art fair environment.)

Superfine! Miami
Get an (almost) first look at the more than 800 works by 150+ local and global artists at Superfine! 2017 as we celebrate our adopted home in our third annual Miami Love opening reception.
Miami’s finest will mix and mingle to the sounds of hometown heroes Afrobeta in our backyard garden as local mainstays Naomi’s Garden and The Pool Bar at The Vagabond sling updated Kreyol fare and craft cocktails. Local favorite KRELwear by Karelle Levy will host a backyard pop-up souk with ready-to-wear tropical knit fashions as well as a see-it-to-believe-it performance art piece of KRELwear-clad models interacting with attendees in the garden.
As you enjoy the art, fashion, and creativity Miami is famous for, you can feel good about yourself because a portion of sales from Miami Love tickets go directly to the Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Rescue Fund, a Florida Keys-based organization that helps save stranded dolphins and whales. Don’t forget to check out the paintings inside the fair created by the center’s charismatic dolphins!

vernissage /vns/
French, literally ‘varnishing’, originally referring to the day prior to an exhibition when artists were allowed to retouch and varnish hung work.

Don’t worry, the paintings will be dry: we’re giving dedicated art-lovers and our committed year-round Collectors’ Society members an exciting witching hour sneak peek at Superfine! this December in midtown Miami.
You’ll thrill to whimsical sparkling cocktails, performance art, and an overreaching air of surprise as you peruse works by over 150 hand-curated independent and gallery-presented artists. An ethereal backdrop of harp chords float through the air, providing the soundtrack to an evening that’s set to be a Miami Art Week tradition for many years to come. Limited to only 300 guests, the Midnight Vernissage is your best opportunity to fall in love with and collect the artwork you want before any mere mortals get the chance.

Wynwood Warehouse Project is proud to announce its next Art Exhibit “Quorum: A Human Extravaganza”. The opening is scheduled for Friday, September 1st, 2017 at 7:00 P.M. and wil remain until October 1rst.
This ambitious project will be held at our dynamic and trendy gallery at 450 NW 27th St., in the heart of Wynwood-Miami. Additionally, we’ll be giving venue to “Auris Hominis” A very talented local electro-rock-blues band. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served at the event.

“Quorum: A Human Extravaganza”

This episodic exhibition illustrates pivotal moments in figurative art through the work of fifty exceptional artists, from different countries and backgrounds, despite their varied approaches to media and subjects, these artists are bound by their sustained engagement with the human figure and by their use of patterns as a visual strategy to enhance, entice and inmerse into the viewing experience.

The exhibit is complemented by two projects that merge into one…

QUORUM is a group of 15 Latin American artists presenting selections of their work in painting, drawing, digital art, mixed media or assemblage, that feature the human figure as the primary inspiration and focus . They each represent silent storytellers, waiting to be interpreted by the spectator.

HUMAN EXTRAVAGANZA is an experimental kind of Cadavre Exquis (Exquisite Corpse) based on the Surrealist concept where the participant’s work becomes a significant part of a whole. In our variation of the “cadavre”, we have invited 50 artist from differnt backgrounds, to blindly collaborate in its construction, under the premises of size and theme, the human on its figurative form. Together, these works explore issues of identity and personal history, while revealing the versatility of art as means to capture the diversity and complexity of the contemporary human experience.
