Looking for a new home this summer? We Florida Financial wants to help consumers save time and money with its free Home Buyers Summer Seminar Series. Gain the knowledge and confidence to make the best home buying decisions for you and your family by attending one of the free seminars taking place on June 11 in Lauderdale Lakes, June 21 at the Biscayne branch, June 25 in Lauderhill and July 20 at the North Miami branch.

According to statistics compiled by the website mymovingreviews.com, summer is a popular time to move because of preferable weather. It’s a great time for families to explore neighborhoods and make friends before the school year starts. Plus, many sellers who haven’t sold homes put on the market in spring are willing to sell for less during the summer. Over half of all moves (61.5%) in 2015 were made during the months of May through September with the busiest day in the moving industry being July 31. The state of Florida also ranked as number two in the nation for the highest number of local moves.

“Now is the time to buy before interest rates rise and We Florida Financial credit union services wants to help consumers save time and money for this important life purchase,” said Lloyd Gill, president and CEO of We Florida Financial. “We Florida Financial has mortgage programs for the modern buyer with low rates, affordable monthly payments and no Florida intangible tax. We encourage South Florida residents to attend one of our free Home Buyers Summer Seminars to get the most out of their home-buying experience.”

Do you know sources of funding for your cause other than grants?

We invite you to join us for breakfast and networking to discuss funding issues with Tom Schramm, from Schramm & Associates.

Grant funding is often the initial funding an organization receives to get started. However, grants should not be the only source of funding to sustain an organization and to fund its growth. This workshop will identify funding sources other than grants and look in particular at two that provide the greatest return on the investment of your time and effort but that you may not have considered for your organization.

About the Presenter:
Thomas Schramm, a Professional in Residence at the Center for Social Change, has 29 years of fundraising experience in healthcare, arts, education, environmental and wildlife, social services and humanitarian organizations in Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe counties. He specializes in major gift fundraising including capital, comprehensive, and annual campaigns. He leads major gift workshops for nonprofit organizations to prepare development staff, and executive and volunteer leaders to implement major gifts fundraising as apart of their fundraising plan.

This classy music venue—former home to dance clubs Power and Glo—has the fairly dubious distinction of being located next door to a Western Beef supermarket. But indoors, the spartan 700-person-capacity space distinguishes itself with exposed beams, lounge-worthy lighting, and a column-free main floor with great sight lines from both the wide downstairs area and the carpeted balcony. (When seats are added to both levels, the place maxes the lookout.) Bookings are consciously eclectic, but overall reflect the evolved vibe of the neighborhood with bling- and controversy-free hip-hop acts, mellow songstresses, and veteran critical darlings.

Pop-Up Exhibit featuring works of Robert Mapplethorpe
Venture inside the mind of one of the 20th Century’s most important artists, and come face to face with his provocative masterpieces. Presented on a scale worthy of its artistic impact, this digital gallery features rare and revealing commentary from the photographer himself.

“Look at the pictures,” said Senator Jesse Helms, denouncing the controversial art of Robert Mapplethorpe, whose photographs pushed boundaries with frank depictions of nudity, sexuality and fetishism, igniting a culture war that rages to this day.

More than 25 years later, the HBO Documentary Films presentation MAPPLETHORPE: LOOK AT THE PICTURES does just that, taking an unflinching, unprecedented look at his most provocative work.

As The J. Paul Getty Museum and The Los Angeles County Museum of Art prepare landmark Mapplethorpe retrospectives (both opening in March), the film goes inside the preparation for the exhibitions as a jumping-off point to tell the complete story of his life and work, and explore the interplay between his personal and professional lives.

With complete and unprecedented access to The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, the documentary draws upon archival materials and features never-before-seen photographs and footage. Mapplethorpe himself is a strong presence, telling his story in his own words with complete honesty and often shocking candor through rediscovered audio interviews.

Almost all of the people from key relationships in his life are included in the film, including his first girlfriend, Patti Smith, one in a string of profoundly influential lovers.

“Putting the PLUR in Politics”. The powerful acronym, Peace Love Unity Respect, has been recognized for decades as the ravers mantra and is commonly symbolized and represented in the EDM arena. The idea is to bring together people of diverse political backgrounds for a night of fellowship. Meet old friends and make new ones!

The name “Dance Party” comes from my belief of only trusting a dance party, being politically/civically involved but not loyal to a political party, making me the “NPA Rebel”. Latin Symphony celebrates the fusion of Latin & classical music with Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons by The Miami Chamber Orchestra.

Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi is one of the most beloved classical composers of all times, especially because of his concertos for violin and his greatest masterpiece “The Four Seasons.” The best known work of Vivaldi’s, The Four Seasons is a collection of four violin concerts, each of which offers a musical interpretation of the seasons of the year.

And nothing better to bring in the season than the Vivaldi’s masterpiece with young violin virtuoso Nuné Melikian and the Miami Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Jorge Vazquez. After a long winter, spring arises like a colorful explosion leading into the slowing sensation of heat and culminating into the bountiful harvest of fall. Experience the musical journey of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, presented by Latin Symphony.

Salvador Dalí (1904 – 1989) was among the most creative artists of the XX Century. His work continues to dazzle viewers and influence other artists today. He managed to dazzle art lovers with works that puzzled and delighted them. He also amazed the public with a lifestyle that was as bizarre as his paintings. A select group of artists took up the challenge of creating artwork as an homage to Dalí. Each artist incorporated an image of Salvador Dalí’s face within the work along with some element of Dalí’s ideas.

Our music scene lost Bryan Modesto late last year. Bryan wasn’t a musician but he attended more shows than most. We decided to throw this fundraiser for his family when we saw first hand the astronomical cost of death. Then recently, we were all hit with the news of Ariel Gonzalez’s ongoing struggle with cancer. Ariel is hands down one of the best punk rock guitarists around. Seeing as Ariel’s battle with cancer is a costly one, we decided to host this fundraiser for both Bryan and Ariel. If you can’t make the show but wish to donate please visit their gofundme pages. 3rd Annual Filmgate Interactive 2/20/16 – 2/28/16

3rd Annual Filmgate Interactive
February 20 – 28, 2016

FilmGate Interactive, the U.S.A.’s only Immersive Media Conference, returns for its third year with more than 20 screenings, 6 performances, 5 interactive exhibits and 15 workshops, which explore the intersection of film, technology and interactive storytelling.

The FilmGate Interactive Conference will take place from February 20 to 28, 2016 at prime arts locations throughout Miami Beach and Miami, Florida. Over 5,000 production professionals and enthusiastic amateurs, are anticipated to attend this year’s conference and their goal is to learn, showcase their work, and develop new content through immersive and interactive techniques – an approach that recognizes the changing landscape of entertainment and storytelling, and produces a more cohesive and rewarding audience experience.

Under the helm of Executive Director Diliana Alexander, the FilmGate Interactive conference aims to engage viewers in the creative process while also providing production professionals, filmmakers, videographers, gamers, coders, writers, photographers, story architects, marketing and advertising creatives and technophile audiences with access to experts and state-of-the-art tools to craft their own projects.

FilmGate Interactive answers the question of how new technology is influencing the future of entertainment, art and digital storytelling. We called the Conference, FilmGate to pay homage to our roots—the capturing of that moment, when film passed through the gate and is illuminated—but there is hardly any film left in today’s reality. We live in a digital world with ever-changing technological landscape and our programming and learning environments reflect that – Diliana Alexander

In a nod to the Hispanic creative and new technology communities from Central and South America and the Caribbean, an important aspect of conference programming embedded since its launching has been to represent diversity and emerging markets. At this year’s Conference, FilmGate Interactive will feature immersive media creators from Brazil and Colombia. “South Florida’s unique socio-cultural demographic and proximity to Latin America and the Caribbean have positioned Miami Beach and Miami as an international destination for arts, development and increasingly, technology,” said Alexander. “There is a tangible shift in the region’s identity as one poised for opportunity and growth.”

Program highlights include:
The Interactive Tech Playground
The Interactive Tech Playground is a curated fair with 30 selected exhibitors offering innovative products (cameras, lights, cranes, lenses, gaming software, apps, video equipment, etc.) and services.  Spanning over more than 8,000 square-feet at the historic Deauville Beach Resort, the Interactive Tech Playground was designed to be a platform to connect trade and consumer audiences to the advances in new technology, from startups to blue chip companies.
The Playground will feature the FilmGate Center Stage, an area for live presentations and an interactive set with live actors, where anyone can “play” with the gear on display.
We welcome new editions to the program: cinematic camera manufacturers RED Digital and Blackmagic. SONY will return with a workshop on High Dynamic Range for Content Production and Distribution, How to get the best imagery from the PMW-F55 and PMW-F5 motion picture cameras and a Miami specific workshop involving underwater videography and photography. Richard Haas’ Florida
April 21 – August 14, 2016

In 2015, famed muralist Richard Haas donated over 50 works on paper, preparatory sketches, and models to the Museums Permanent Art Collection. The suite of exquisitely rendered drawings and plans reveal Haas’ deep appreciation of architecture and served as studies for the majestic murals he created throughout South Florida. The large Art Deco “Arc de Triomphe” was painted onto the original Fountainebleau Hilton Hotel in Miami Beach, designed by Morris Lapidus, and was “lit” by two sixty-five feet high grand lamps in the form of caryatids. The now destroyed mural was just one example of the artists’ iconic work adorning the building facades within Miami Dade County.

Richard Haas murals have been painted on blank walls of buildings in cities throughout the United States including New York, Boston, St. Louis, Cincinnati and Miami. The paintings are extravagant and inventive architectural fantasies, which alter the cityscape around them.

“Richard Haas is an artist about architecture – he makes people stop and think about architecture and realize that buildings are not just a backdrop; they are also an active presence in our lives.” -Paul Goldberger, Architecture Critic, Vanity Fair

In this exhibition, Richard Haas’ Florida, many works will be on loan from Haas’ private collection which include final preparatory studies for projects created throughout Florida including State Offices, Tallahassee, Florida; The University of Tampa series; SeaWorld, Orlando project; final drawings for mosaics for Home Savings Banks in Aventura, Bradenton, Vero Beach, Naples, the Sarasota County Courthouse and the Bakehouse, Miami. In addition, new paintings from Haas’ Museum interior series will also be on loan from Harmon Meek Gallery in Naples, Florida .

75 Years of EFE Images: Wars, Triumphs, Disasters, People and Politics
February 17 – August 28, 2016

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Museum of Art + Design (MOA+D) in collaboration with the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives is pleased to present the exhibition 75 Years of EFE Images: Wars, Triumphs, Disasters, People and Politics. The exhibition, drawn from the recent donation of over 75 photographs from Agencia EFE, the world’s leading Spanish-language news agency, will open to the public on February 17, 2016 at MOA+D located within the College’s Historic Freedom Tower.

75 Years of EFE Images: Wars, Triumphs, Disasters, People and Politics, is an exhibition and collection of photographs donated to MDC’s Permanent Art Collection and the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives. The exhibition includes photographs of Ibero-American and world history and features images of historic importance, such as the meeting between Francisco Franco and Adolf Hitler at the start of World War II, Princess Diana, Martin Luther King, as well as photos of Celia Cruz, Cantinflas and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The collection will continue to grow, as the agency donates a historically significant photograph that encapsulates the most important headline of each year.

In 2015, Agencia EFE, the Spanish international news agency, celebrated 75 years of service. The world’s fourth largest wire service, EFE has documented and reported the most important global events through words and images. In celebration of its 75th anniversary, EFE compiled a collection of its most arresting and impactful images for each year in operation. Featuring photographs from EFE’s award-winning photojournalists, the exhibition captures pivotal moments in history including coronations of kings and queens, presidential visits, star-studded moments, physical triumphs and political turmoil. EFE was born in 1939 in a Spain devastated by the Civil War and began its expansion in the Americas in 1966 with the opening of its first bureaus in the region. Today, EFE operates in 180 cities in 120 countries, employing more than 3,000 news professionals from 60 nationalities.

“The Museum of Art + Design is thrilled to present this important exhibition that not only encompasses achievements by photojournalists but also the depiction of pivotal moments in Ibero-American history.” said Jeremy Mikolajczak, MOA+D’s executive director and chief curator. “We are honored by the generous on-going donation from EFE, as it expands our diverse collection and provides continued collaboration opportunities between the Museum and the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives.”

The Basement Project is proud to present the South Florida premiere of Boom, an epic and intimate comedy by acclaimed San Francisco playwright Peter Sinn Nachtrieb directed by a theater veteran Oleg Kheyfets. Featuring original music composed and performed by members of the beloved electro-funk bank Afrobeta, the show runs Jan 7-31 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami.

“Uproariously funny. It’s literate, coarse, thoughtful, sweet, scabrously inappropriate, wracked by existential anxiety, and wonderfully humane…this is one end-of-the-world story that’s likely to leave you grinning from ear to ear.”

– Washington City Paper

A grad student’s personal ad lures a mysterious girl to his subterranean research lab under the pretense of an evening of “no strings attached” sex. But when a global catastrophe strikes, their date takes on evolutionary significance. An epic and intimate comedy that spans over billions of years.

“At first glans “Boom” suggests a “Twilight Zone” rewritten as a sitcom… It winds up speaking, quietly and piquantly, to our enduring fascination with and need for myths about the beginning of life as well as its end.”
– New York Times

“A Grandly wacked-out apocalypse fantasy, one of those charmed evenings.”
-Washington Post

His life was as bizarre as his paintings: Melting clocks, tigers leaping out of nowhere, flaming giraffes, mills powered by butterflies, women with protruding drawers, and plenty of overt and subtle sexual references to go around. Paintings charged with religiosity that ranged from the blasphemous to the pious. A personal life that resembled a circus. A financial success wrapped inside of a financial disaster. Famous for being famous. Sexual exploits to make a herd of prudes squirm. An ego that hardly fit within the universe. Many described him as a skilled painter; others, unh-uh, not so much. What is undeniable though is that he was among the most creative artists of the XX Century.

Miguel Rodez has challenged himself and a select group of artists to create artwork in their own style, but incorporating an image of Salvador Dalí’s face within the work, along with some element of Dalí’s ideas. It is an art project that is intended an homage to both Dalí and his artwork. Several artists have taken up the challenge. Their work, which includes drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, fine art photography, and other media, will be shown at FACING DaLí in January 2016. You are invited to share in this experience.

Red bows suggest a promise or a kiss… Bows are ribbons that have been tied into decorative knots, ancient symbols of strength, unions, loyalty, and beauty. Red Bows are at once reminders of all that is important…tie a red string around your finger so as not to forget… In eastern cultures red ribbons connect people who are destined to meet, regardless of place, time, or circumstances. This magical cord may stretch or tangle, but never break.

MANO Fine Art Project Space is the working studio of Miami-based artist MANO and an exhibition and project space for art related events. MANO Fine Art is one of the founding members of the Bird Road Art Walk that is held on the third Saturday of each month.

Bows are ribbons that have been tied into decorative knots, ancient symbols of strength, unions, loyalty, and beauty.

Help support programs dedicated to eliminating the digital divide and the homework gap in Miami. EveryoneOn, a national nonprofit supported in significant part locally by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, is participating in GiveMiamiDay 2015, a 24-hour online fundraiser to help energize its local activities to connect low-income families to affordable high-speed home Internet. For many Miami-Dade students, sitting in a McDonald’s parking lot, a city park, or riding public transportation is the only way to complete homework assignments. This not only puts them at a disadvantage, but keeps the family from accessing opportunities and information which could open doors to a brighter future. Don’t let Miami-Dade families rely on unsecure mobile phone Internet or public wifi, get them connected!
