17th Annual InterContinental Miami Make-A-Wish Ball featuring Joan Jett and The Blackhearts and Burn Notice’s Gabrielle Anwar 11/5/11

Saturday, November 5, :00 p.m. Cocktail Reception
8:30 p.m. Dinner, Live Auction, Celebrity Entertainment, Dancing
The InterContinental Miami
100 Chopin Plaza
Miami, FL

Tables for the InterContinental Miami Make-A-Wish Ball range from $5,000 to $20,000. Wish Sponsorships start at $5,000. Tables, wishes and other sponsorship opportunities can be purchased by calling 954.967.9474, extension 318, or by visiting www.makeawishball.com.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Southern Florida and InterContinental Miami will celebrate the 17th Annual InterContinental Miami Make-A-Wish Ball to the theme of Truman Capote’s legendary Black & White Ball. With iconic rock-n-roll group Joan Jett and the Blackhearts as the entertainment, Burn Notice star Gabrielle Anwar as the celebrity auctioneer, the fourth anniversary of the InterContinental Make-A-Wish Nightclub, and a $10 million lifetime-fundraising milestone on the evening’s agenda, the affair is destined to be “The Party of the Century.”

“This year’s Ball will make history,” said Norman Wedderburn, President and CEO of the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Southern Florida. “In addition to the overwhelming positive energy and response we’ve received, we have world-class talent and entertainment on board. Gabrielle Anwar will no doubt provoke unprecedented bidding wars, and Joan Jett, a bona fide rock legend, will give our guests the show of their lives. But it is really these incredible individuals – our loyal supporters – that will make history this year – because it is with their generosity that we will reach the $10 million mark in funds raised in the Ball’s history.”

The Ball’s “Three Amigos” – Wedderburn; Ball Chairman and recently appointed Foundation Board Member Shareef Malnik, proprietor of The Forge | Restaurant and Wine Bar; and InterContinental Miami’s General Manager Robert Hill – have together managed to make each Ball an impactful, memorable occasion. Hill said, “When the InterContinental Miami began partnering with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida 17 years ago, we could only dream of granting 2,000 wishes. Exceeding this count, we reach this important $10 million milestone, hand-in-hand with my ‘Amigos’ Norm and Shareef, the hotel team and I are extremely proud to look back at the fruits of our labor, seen in the smiles of our Wish Kids. We are delighted to continue our work in support of the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s mission.”

Recently appointed to the Foundation’s Board, Malnik has taken his involvement in the Ball to a new high. “It is with much excitement that I announce the newest element of the Ball, the ‘Chairman’s Challenge,’” said Malnik. “In an effort to continue the momentum of advancing the Ball and its fundraising initiatives, I will challenge a select group of philanthropists to join forces – and funds – with the goal of fulfilling an endowment to underwrite the cost of the ball for the next five years.” Other notable contributors include Lifetime Benefactors Al and Nancy Malnik; Grand Benefactors Stanley and Gala Cohen; Founding Benefactors Howard and Barbara Glicken; and Wish Star Benefactor James L. Ferraro, as well as Wish Benefactors Harvey and Roberta Chaplin, Stuart A. Miller of Lennar Corporation and Robert Press of Trafalgar Capital Advisors.

Tasked with re-creating “The Party of the Century” in homage to Truman Capote’s A-list-only vanity affair at New York’s Plaza Hotel in 1966, Deco Productions will take the Ball’s historically over-the-top décor to an entirely new level of extravagance with a black and white avant-garde masquerade. Upon arrival, masked guests will be welcomed by living chandeliers and led to the white carpet, where they will transcend into a glamorous, glowing realm of fantasy. Psychedelic black and white art installations on the mezzanine will be brought to life by camouflaged performers, igniting guests’ senses with a feeling of mystery.

During the cocktail reception, guests will enjoy hors d’oeuvres and cocktail stations while having the opportunity to bid on more than 125 premier items donated by top hospitality, entertainment, fashion and luxury brands. Highlights include a South African safari, children’s ride-on Mercedes SUV and Goodyear Blimp, a voice-activated interactive R2D2 replica from Star Wars; luxury goods by Herve Leger, Max Mara USA, Tiffany & Co., Longchamp USA and more; and luxury hospitality packages provided by Gansevoort South Beach, The Brazilian Court Hotel, Trump International Beach Resort, Conrad Miami, Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, Omphoy Beach Resort as well as a number of worldwide travel experiences courtesy of the InterContinental Hotels and Resorts: Real InterContinental Hotel & Club Tower Costa Rica, InterContinental Berlin, InterContinental Bangkok, InterContinental Budapest, InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam, InterContinental Paris Le Grand, InterContinental Beijing Financial Street, InterContinental Athens, InterContinental Buenos Aires, InterContinental Madrid, InterContinental Tahiti, InterContinental Moorea, and Willard InterContinental Washington D.C.

Following the reception, resident Ball and Miami Heat celebrity beat-master DJ Irie will summon guests into the main ballroom for a decadent four-course dinner, as prepared by Chef Alexander Feher. Anwar will then return to the auction podium where, for the second year in a row, she will spark a bidding war for another walk-on roll on her hit USA Network show Burn Notice, which is filmed on-site in Miami. As this year’s celebrity auctioneer, the starlet will tempt the audience with an array of extravagant items including a high-performance luxury vehicle donated by Ken Gorin of THE COLLECTION; two tickets to The 84th Academy Awards, complete with access to the Governor’s Ball after party on Sun., Feb., 26, 2010, donated by director Brett Ratner; a Bogosse Lifestyle travel package presented by Groups Metro, including private travel from Miami to the Dominican Republic, VIP ground transportation, villa accommodations, yachting and chic wardrobing for six people; the James Bond 007 experience donated by Strategic Hotels & Resorts, including British Airways Club World travel to and from London, England; a week aboard The World, the largest privately owned yacht on the planet; the High Rollers Las Vegas getaway presented by Ocean Drive; and a week-long exotic vacation at a Hawaiian compound.

After the auction, guests will be entertained with a live grand finale performance by none-other than legendary rock-n-roll group Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Jett, who has had eight platinum and gold albums as well as nine Top 40 singles, will perform a selection of the Blackheart’s chart-topping hits including “I Love Rock n’ Roll,” “Bad Reputation,” “Cherry Bomb,” and “I Hate Myself for Lovin’ You,” among others.

For the fourth year in a row, the InterContinental Make-A-Wish Nightclub will celebrate and support the Ball’s endeavors as well as introduce the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida to the next generation of contributors. Presented by the Three Amigos, along with Nightclub Vice Chairmen Michael Capponi of The Capponi Group and Maxwell Blanford, as well as Nightclub Co-Chairmen Antonio Misuraca and Clif Loftin, the mezzanine-turned-chic-nightclub will again come to life with a fashion show, beats by DJ Joe Dert and more. Reservations for the Nightclub can be made at 305-695-4410 or RSVP@CAPPONIGROUP.COM.

The mission of the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Southern Florida is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. In its 16-year history, the InterContinental Miami Make-A-Wish Ball has raised in excess of $9.6 million. With these much needed funds, the Foundation has been able to grant more than 2,100 wishes for deserving children in our community. Past VIP guests of the Ball have included Paula Abdul, Sharon Stone, Kim Kardashian, Esteban Cortazar, Pamela Anderson, Governor Charlie Crist, Scottie and Larsa Pippen, Russell Simmons, Venus and Serena Williams, Don King, Sex in the City’s Candace Bushnell, Marcus Schenkenberg, Pauly Shore, and performers Macy Gray, Natalie Cole and Wyclef Jean, Bernadette Peters, the late Nell Carter, Ricki Lake, Deborah Gibson, the Beatles tribute band Beatlemania and The Honey Brothers featuring Adrian Grenier.

MAM members free, non-members $20

Today, Faith Ringgold is well known as the progenitor of the African American story quilt revival that began in the late 1970s. The once influential paintings she created during the previous decade, with only a few notable exceptions, disappeared from view, omitted from critical, art historical discourse for more than 40 years. This is the first comprehensive survey of these paintings, organized on the occasion of Ringgold’s 80th birthday. The exhibition will include the landmark series “American People” (1963-1967) and “Black Light” (1967-1971), along with related murals and political posters.

In partnership with Overtown Music Project, Bobby Stringer, who launched his international career from Overtown’s Cotton Club 40+ years ago when the area was known as the “Harlem of the South,” will perform at the opening reception with the Special Touch Band. Hors d’oeuvres and open donation bar. For event details contact events@miamiartmuseum.org.

Flagler Street. Miami, Florida. This event is open to the public and tickets are available for $25, $35, $45 ($10 additional day of show)

Deva Premal’s pure voice and the ancient mantras she sings are a potent combination that is calling to an ever-increasing number of people. Her soulful rendering of these timeless sounds strikes a powerful chord – whether it’s for a private audience with the Dalai Lama, motivational speaker Anthony Robbins, actress-singer Cher or in front of hundreds or thousands of adoring fans around the world.

Miten, who plays guitar and sings harmony, also performs his own songs of celebration. During their concerts, Deva Premal & Miten invite the audience to experience the performance without the customary applause. This creates a deep silence, a connection between performers and audience that invites stillness and introspection. Says Miten, “The true purpose of our music is to awaken a longing in the heart for that which is omnipresent: the experience of silence and meditation. It’s not about entertainment – it is simply our spiritual practice.”

Deva & Miten are accompanied by Nepalese flute maestro Manose. Born in Kathmandu, Nepal, Manose has performed extensively with them and is featured on their new CD release, Password.

World Champion Dogs In A Canine Extravaganza Show Will Donate Portion of Ticket Proceeds to Humane Society of Greater Miami

Who let the dogs out? We’re not sure, but Miami will be host to talented world champion and “celebrity” canines when DOGS debuts for the first time in the U.S. Seen around the globe, this live touring production introduces audiences to an exciting dog show under the Big Top at Bicentennial Park. DOGS will impress and entertain South Florida beginning September 28, 2011.

Guests who attend the show will be amazed by the talented and energetic canines. Acts like frisbee, dog diving, obstacle course, weave poles and much more, will have audiences cheering, while the four-legged characters run, jump, leap and sing throughout a memorable 120 minute production. In fact, several of the dogs have been featured in Hollywood films such as Disney’s “Life is Ruff” and “Water for Elephants.” The show also showcases Bella and Grit, Frisbee World Championship winners, and Julio, an English Bulldog that specializes in extreme skateboarding and mathematical equations. DOGS is a production pooch lovers won’t want to miss.

In an effort to assist the Humane Society of Greater Miami in creating a more loving community for pets by providing shelter and medical care to cats and dogs, DOGS will donate a portion of ticket proceeds to the non-profit organization. To further encourage the adoption of pets, the Humane Society will have dogs on-site available for adoption to loving families after some presentations.

“DOGS was originally created to increase awareness about the neglect and cruelty dogs endure,” said the show’s producer, Arturo Guzmán. “ More than 50% of the dogs in the show have been rescued from the streets or pounds. The show not only promotes pet adoption, but also displays the unconditional relationship between dogs and trainers.”

DOGS is an interactive two-hour live family show, full of music, special effects and constant action. The Purina sponsored show highlights the unique bond between man and dog and raises awareness of the mistreatment of animals, while promoting the adoption of canines. Recognized and applauded by worldwide organizations, like Purina and The Humane Society, DOGS takes pride in being a fun show that also bears an important message.

DOGS is presented under a 40,000 square feet big top, which takes over 10 days, 30 men and two cranes to set up. With a total of 25 trainers and 38 dogs, the show has entertained more than 500,000 spectators in eight different countries.

Miami Art Museum presents the U.S. debut of Schneebett, a major installation inspired by Ludwig van Beethoven’s convalescence and death in Vienna, Austria in 1827. The reception will feature a performance of Beethoven’s late quartets by members of the Miami Symphony Orchestra. Schneebett, originally created for the Berliner Philharmonie in 2004, will be on view in the Museum’s permanent collection installation from October 14, 2011 through January 1, 2012.

Miami Art Museum will present the United States debut of Enrique Martínez Celaya’s Schneebett, a major installation inspired by Ludwig van Beethoven’s convalescence and death in Vienna, Austria in 1827, originally created for the Berliner Philharmonie. Enrique Martínez Celaya: Schneebett will be on view from October 14, 2011 through January 1, 2012 in the Museum’s Anchor Gallery, a space dedicated to large-scale works from the permanent collection. The exhibition opening will take place October 13, 2011 from 6 to 8pm and feature a performance by members of the Miami Symphony Orchestra.

Schneebett, which reflects on and transports the viewer into the final hours of Ludwig van Beethoven’s life, was the first work of art commissioned for and exhibited at the Berliner Philharmonie since its founding in 1882. It was presented in 2004, and was shown in juxtaposition to the music of the Berliner Philharmoniker with special programming at the American Academy in Berlin. Schneebett was presented again in 2006 at the Museum der bildenden Künste in Leipzig where it offered a counterpoint to Max Klinger’s statue of the heroic Beethoven as the creative genius. The title, Schneebett (“Snow-bed”), is from a poem by Holocaust survivor Paul Celan, a meditation on death. To re-animate the spirit of those celebrated exhibitions, Martínez Celaya created a new version of the installation for Miami Art Museum, which opens with a performance of Beethoven’s late quartets by the Miami Symphony Orchestra. A video of the performance will be on view for the duration of the exhibition.

The three-part installation conveys Beethoven’s final moments in Vienna, far away from his native Bonn. In one room is a bronze bed, its surface covered in a thick layer of frost created by an elaborate compressor system. Behind it is a large tar-and-feather painting of a dense, snow-covered forest. The entry to the room is blocked by a pile of sticks and branches. On the other side of the blocked doorway is an “ante-chamber” with a solitary chair from which a viewer can peer into the inaccessible “bedroom,” and experience the environment as a memory of what was, or what might have been. The Leipziger Volkszeitung remarked that Beethoven’s presence “literally hovers in the air as sound.”

“Schneebett is a major work by an internationally-renowned artist,” said MAM Senior Curator Peter Boswell. “It will have a special resonance here in Miami since Martínez Celaya, who was born in Cuba, was inspired in part by the thought of Beethoven’s passing away far from Bonn, the city of his birth, which he left at age 21 never to return.”

Schneebett is a promised gift to the museum from German collectors Dieter and Si Rosenkranz.

Born in Habana in 1964, Enrique Martínez Celaya worked primarily as a scientist until 1992, when he decided to be an artist, an endeavor he had been pursuing since an early apprenticeship during his teenage years. Marie Louise Knott, editor of Le Monde Diplomatique, which dedicated an entire issue to the artist, stated, “Martínez Celaya’s work reinvents the original magic of art.”

Martínez Celaya studied applied physics at Cornell University and, supported by a fellowship from the Brookhaven National Laboratory, pursued a Ph.D. in Quantum Electronics at the University of California, Berkeley. As a scientist he worked on superconductivity, lasers and laser delivery systems, research for which he was issued an often-cited patent. He attended the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture in Maine and received a Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, Santa Barbara. His work is represented in such public collections as the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. He has been the recipient of numerous distinguished awards, including most recently, the honor of being the second Visiting Presidential Professor in the history of the University of Nebraska, and the prestigious Anderson Ranch National Artist Award. Recently, the University of Nebraska Press released Enrique Martínez Celaya: Collected Writings & Interviews, 1990-2010, which traces the development of the artist’s thought throughout his twenty-year career as an artist, writer, and lecturer.

For a comprehensive archive that documents the making and reception of the work, please see www.schneebett.com.

Focus Gallery: Joel Meyerowitz – Aftermath
In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, Miami Art Museum presents “Focus Gallery: Joel Meyerowitz – Aftermath,” an exhibition of photographs taken by the only photographer granted right of entry into Ground Zero after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City. For nine months during the day and night, Meyerowitz photographed “the pile,” as the World Trade Center came to be known, and the over 800 people a day that were working in it. The exhibition consists of 24, recently-donated photographs, presented in the Focus Gallery section of the Museum’s Permanent Collection installation.

“I was making photographs for everyone who didn’t have access to the site,” says Meyerowitz, “I wanted to communicate what it felt like to be in there as well as what it looked like: to show the pile’s incredible intricacy and visceral power. I could provide a window for everyone else who wanted to be there, too, to help, or to grieve, or simply to try to understand what had happened to our city.”

About the experience, Meyerowitz has written, “The nine months I worked at Ground Zero were among the most rewarding of my life. I came in as an outsider, a witness bent on keeping the record, but over time I began to feel a part of the very project I’d been intent on recording… the intense camaraderie I experienced at Ground Zero inspired me, changing both my sense of myself and my sense of responsibility to the world around me. September 11th was a tragedy of almost unfathomable proportions. But living for nine months in the midst of those individuals who faced that tragedy head-on, day after day, and did what they could to set things right, was an immense privilege.”

The photographs in MAM’s collection are from a unique set of contact prints (photographs printed on a 1:1 scale from the negatives) issued by the artist in 2006. As a group, they span the entire nine month period that Meyerowitz was on site, presenting a poignant, condensed view of the clean up effort, including portraits of the workers involved. The set is introduced by a single image of the World Trade Center towers taken by the artist in the 1980s from his apartment window.

The entire set of more than 8,000 photographs taken by Meyerowitz form an archive at the Museum of the City of New York. The Aftermath series was the focus of a 2006 book, Aftermath: World Trade Center Archives published by Phaidon (reissued this year in a special 10th anniversary edition) and an exhibition organized by the US Department of State that traveled worldwide from 2002 to 2005.

Experience Rumi’s timeless message of love and hope in this extraordinary world-class performance of poetry, music, dance, story and humor. “Food for the soul!”

The Rumi Concert, a collaboration with 100 Thousand Poets for Change, is the largest poetry reading in history. Poets in 400 cities representing 90 countries are currently organizing the largest poetry reading in history with over 500 individual events scheduled to take place simultaneously on September 24th to promote environmental, social, and political change. Bob Holman and Margery Snyder, in a recent article on About.com said, “the beauty of the concept of 100 Thousand Poets for Change is that it is completely decentralized and completely inclusive.”

Coleman Barksis world-renowned for his translation and moving recitation of Rumi. His most recent volume, The Book of Love joins his best seller, The Essential Rumi, in touching the hearts of people from all walks of life. Jelaluddin Rumi, Sufi teacher, mystic and poet of lyrical spiritual power has become the most read poet in America, due in large part to the work of Coleman Barks.

ABOUT RUMI (1207-1273) was a teacher, mystic, founder of what we now know a “Whirling Dervishes,” and a poet of lyrical spiritual power. Born in Afghanistan, Rumi was teaching in Konya, Turkey in 1244 when he met the powerful spiritual seeker, Shams of Tabriz. Through his association with Shams, Rumi found a deeper level within himself that he called “The Friend.” Rumi created some 20,000 poems as oral extemporizations that were recorded by his students. He believed that prayer has a form and physical equivalent and that every thought has an expressive action. Many of his verses are fervent love poems, although the eroticism is a metaphor of the soul’s longing for God’s love.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
COLEMAN BARKS
For thirty years the poet Coleman Barks has been collaborating with various Persian scholars to bring the poetry of Rumi and other mystic poets to the American public. This work has resulted in over eighteen volumes, leading to the best-selling Essential Rumi (HarperCollins, 1995), two hour-long appearances on Bill Moyers’ PBS specials, and inclusion in the prestigious Norton Anthology of World Masterpieces. Celebrating Rumi’s 800th birthday and coinciding with international celebrations of the event, Barks’ offering RUMI: BRIDGE TO THE SOUL (HarperOne; September 2007) is a beautiful collection of poems by the Sufi master. Barks taught poetry and creative writing in various universities for thirty-four years. He has published six volumes of his own poetry, most recently Tentmaking and Club: Granddaughter Poems (Maypop, 2001). His most recent publication (2010) is Rumi: The Big Red Book, the collected translations from Rumi’s Divan, sometimes called the THE SHAMS. He is now a retired Professor Emeritus of English from the University of Georgia in Athens. He received the Juliet Hollister Award (2004) for his work in the interfaith area. His Rumi translations have sold over half a million copies worldwide and have touched the hearts of people from all walks of life. Bayside Rocks Music and Arts Festival 11/19/11

Bayside Rocks Music & Arts Festival
Saturday, November 19, 2011
Bayfront Park
Downtown Miami

Get your tickets now by calling 888-302-5442 or by clicking here.

Miami is throwing an environmentally- and family-friendly, star-studded party that will turn even the staunchest environmentalist Green with envy.

The annual Bayside Rocks Music & Arts Festival on November 19th 2011 at downtown Miami’s Bayfront Park is happy to welcome Budweiser on board, with our “green conscious “ to decrease the environmental impact in Miami. Budweiser recognized our green initiatives that resonated with their environmental message that dates back to the late 1800’s with the founder Adolphus Busch, who began recycling leftover grain from the brewing process and selling it for cattle feed, a practice that continues today. They made a conscious decision and came on board in a big way to further push its “green” identity on the local & national level. This event will incorporate local businesses and organizations, forming positive relationships that will ultimately have a positive impact on the community and environment in conjunction with America Recycles Day. Together we will resonate this message: “Our goal is to connect our efforts to a collective responsibility we share with our family, friends, employees, consumers, wholesalers, retailers, law enforcement, elected officials, educators and other partners. After all, these are our roads, our kids, our neighborhoods and this is our Earth; and it is our obligation to work together to help support our communities.”

A star-filled tribute to Jamaican music will mark a concert extravaganza as the 2nd annual Bayside Rocks Music & Arts Festival offers up a jam-packed cavalcade of stars, and a day of peace, love & unity on November 19th 2011 in Miami, Florida.

This year’s Bayside Rocks will feature world music headliners Bunny Wailer, Luciano, Tabou Combo, Cultura Profetica, Gondwana, Warrior King, Pato Banton, Connis Vanterpool and The Original Wailers, as well as some of world music’s most promising up-and-coming talent. Plus a special tribute to the life of Honorable Robert Nesta ‘Bob’ Marley and 50 years of Wailers music.

Produced by ROCKAZ MVMT (www.rockazmvnt.com), Bayside Rocks was designed as a fun filled day of social consciousness, community and environmental awareness on a musical platform with an urgent humanitarian effort to fight poverty and feed the hungry whilst providing ecologically engineered economic transformation on a global scale. Music, art, fashion and food from around the world provide the backdrop to a truly amazing cultural experience.

Through the universal language of music, as well as vision for the arts and cultural media, ROCKAZ MVMT and its president and CEO Alfonso D’Niscio Brooks are striving to change the world for the better by empowering people to make a positive difference.

“Our ultimate goal is to uplift the spirit and inspire people of every ilk to give of themselves to help make the world a better place in which to live,” said D’Niscio Brooks. “We’re accomplishing this task by spreading art, culture and music while raising money to end poverty, feed the hungry and shelter the homeless.”

This year, concert proceeds will include a food drive benefiting Curley’s House http://www.curleyshouse.com an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for low-to-moderate income individuals, families, the elderly, youth-at-risk, the abused, and HIV/AIDS infected individuals by providing the nutrition they need. Guests will be asked to contribute two or more cans of food as part of the cost of admission.

“Given the philanthropic nature of this event, we’re inviting all civic minded companies to join us as sponsors of this event,” D’Niscio Brooks said. “It’s a great way to get your name in front of tens of thousands of people while ensuring that hundreds of thousands of dollars are donated to a very worthy cause.”

This year Bayside Rocks Festival is beyond a world beat music festival, it’s a movement that carries with it a strong eco friendly message of hope, unity, peace & love for the environment. In addition to the concert, arts & crafts village, food vendors from the world over here’s what else you can expect:

I Am Documentary Free Showing and Meet the Director 9/23/11

I Am Documentary Free Showing + Meet the Director
Friday, September 23, 2011 at 7:30pm
Gusman Center for the Performing Arts
174 E. Flagler Street
Miami, FL
www.stopbreatheandsmile.org

Stop, Breathe and Smile is pleased to present an inspiring evening of community, a free showing of the documentary I AM on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 7:30pm at Gusman Center for the Performing Arts, located at 174 East Flagler Street, Miami, Florida.

Immediately after the showing, there will be a Q and A session with luminary, Coleman Barks (also in the film) and Tom Shadyac, the film’s Writer and Director recently seen on Oprah!

I AM is a prismatic, probing, and utterly engaging non-fiction film that poses two provocative questions: what’s wrong with our world and what we can do to make it better? The filmmaker asking these questions is Tom Shadyac, one of Hollywood’s leading comedy practitioners and the creative force behind such blockbusters as “Ace Ventura,” “Liar Liar,” “The Nutty Professor,” and “Bruce Almighty.” However in I AM, Shadyac steps in front of the camera to recount the story what happened to him after a cycling accident left him incapacitated, possibly for good. Though he ultimately recovered, he emerged a changed man with a new sense of purpose and a new focus. He was determined to investigate how he as an individual, and we as a race, could improve the world we live in and the way we live.

Check out the trailer for the film at www.iamthedoc.com.

POSTPONED Wine By the Bay Grand Opening Party 10/6/11

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO A LATER DATE.

Wine Boutique In A Fine Art Setting, Downtown Miami Grand Opening Party
Thursday, October 6, 2011 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Wine by the Bay
888 Biscayne Blvd., Suite 112
Miami, FL, 33132

Opens for business on September 28, 2011

Etra Fine Art gallery co-owner, Stefano Campanini will open a new business on September 28, Wine by the Bay. Wine by the Bay will be a fine wine and art boutique hosting an ever-changing art exhibition. The store boasts a sleek and sophisticated contemporary interior and magical terrace view of Miami’s Biscayne Bay.

The Wine by the Bay Grand Opening event will be on Thursday, October 6. Attendees will enjoy an evening designed to satisfy the palate and enlighten both the connoisseur and the curious. The opening night event will feature art by Mimmo Paladino, Emanuele Viscuso, Mario Velez, and Wilfredo Lam alongside a showcase of exceptional wine including Gaja, Sassicaia, Ornellaia and Insigna. To learn more about Wine by the Bay or attend the grand opening event, email Stefano Campanini at info@winebtb.com or call (305) 491-8400.

After seven years running a successful contemporary art gallery with his wife Alicia Restrepo, Campanini has decided to merge his passion for art and wine and create a unique space that caters to the most seasoned wine collector, but also where the passerby will feel comfortable and at home.

“Besides everyday superior customer-oriented service and a unique selection of wines that suit every budget, I plan to hold regular art and wine tasting events that will both entertain and educate the community,” states Campanini. “Whereas in the Design District we deal with a select clientele, I am looking forward to offering something that everyone enjoys and in an environment where the art can be appreciated by many and in an unintimidating way. At art openings, wine is like a sideshow, but now, it will take center stage.”

Choosing the best wine to sell is a very selective process much like identifying great art. Campanini has personally tasted all of the wines that will make up the store’s inventory.

“I tried to have a selection of wines that represent the energetic location where I am,” says Campanini. “A selection that includes most of the Premiere Grand Cru from France and the finest Italian wines, but I also was in search of wines that are hidden treasures.” California wines are also well represented with a good selection of wines scoring more that 93 points by the two most reliable wine experts.

For the grand opening week, customers will be offered special discounts and incentives on all wines.

Located on 888 Biscayne Bay at the Marina Blue, Wine by the Bay overlooks the bay directly across from the American Airlines Arena. The 1200 square foot boutique will serve Miami’s downtown area and become a functional part of city’s new cultural identity and expansion efforts such as the Genting project, the Mikado Hotel, and the new Miami Art Museum.

Photographs from the Mona Lisa Unveiled at the Freedom Tower on 8/25/11

Mona Lisa Unveiled at the Freedom Tower on Thursday, August 25, 2011.  What a great exhibition I really enjoyed seeing the different interpretations of the Mona Lisa through out the ages.  This is a must see!!!  Don’t forget to get your picture taken with the Mona Lisa.

This exhibition is co-presented by City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado and City of Margherita di Savoia (Italy) Mayor Gabriella Carlucci. On loan from the Museo Ideale Leonardo da Vinci in Florence, Italy, the exhibition was created and inspired by Alessandro Vezzosi, the museum’s director, and Agnese Sabato, president of the museum’s International Association. In Miami, the exhibition has been made possible with the support of the Consul General of Italy, Marco Rocca, and Gloria Porcella, director of the Galleria Ca’ d’Oro in Rome and Miami.

Mona Lisa Unveiled is divided into two main sections. One part concentrates on the historical aspect and includes works and documents from the 16th – 19th centuries. The second part is more contemporary, charting the theft of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre in 1911 and continuing with 20th century artists who reinterpret da Vinci’s painting. Featured artists range from Marcel Duchamp, Jean Margat and Salvador Dalì, to Romero Britto, as well as artists who have recreated Italy’s most famous cultural symbol with computers, videos and installation pieces.

The exhibition opens to the general public on August 26 and will remain on display through October 7, free and open to the public during gallery hours. As always, local schools will have the opportunity to schedule guided tours for teachers and students.

Margherita di Savoia is a seaside resort town located along Italy’s Adriatic coast, renowned for its salt marshes and beaches. At the exhibition’s opening reception, Mayors Regalado and Carlucci will sign a Collaborative Agreement between the two cities.

If you’re gonna pull a knife, USAlo urges action around the apparently gloomy themes of petroleum pollution, hopelessness and absurd sea life in search of something upbeat to cling to: a magic solvent that will clean the ocean, the prospect of the perfect job that pays you to do what you love to do, or a piece of floating plastic garbage large enough to float on without drowning. This evening length work, Directed by Havana-based Carlos Diaz of Teatro El Publico, is about the petroleum industry, unemployment and mermaids and impossible love.

Using the rearranged texts of playwright Samuel Beckett as a foundation to piece together dramatic exchanges between an unemployed oil platform worker and an out of work Seaworld character actress, their alter-egos, (a real mermaid and petroleum itself), are drawn to, and react against one another as they make small talk around the woes of being jobless and watching the planet deteriorate in a sea of plastic and toxic pollution around them. The text is presented completely in both English and Spanish.

In August 2005, the American city of New Orleans was struck by the powerful Hurricane Katrina. Although the storm was damaging by itself, that was not the true disaster. That happened when the city’s flooding safeguards like levees failed and put most of the city, which is largely below sea level, underwater. This film covers that disastrous series of events that devastated the city and its people. Furthermore, the gross incompetence of the various governments and the powerful from the local to the federal level is examined to show how the poor and underprivileged of New Orleans were mistreated in this grand calamity and still ignored today. (Documentary)

In 2006, director Spike Lee created an astonishing record of the cataclysmic effects of Hurricane Katrina on the city of New Orleans with his epic award-winning documentary, When the Levees Broke. Five years later, Lee returns to New Orleans, to see how the ambitious plans to reinvent the Crescent City were playing out. He finds a patchwork of hope and heartache just as a new disaster unfolds. The four-hour documentary is a continuation of the heart- rending story of destruction and rebirth of America’s most unique city. (Documentary)

In 1997, Academy Award winning actor, Morgan Freeman, who lives in the Charleston, Mississippi community, offered to fund the first-ever integrated Senior Prom in the history of Charleston’s one high school. His offer was ignored. In 2008, Morgan offered again… the East Tallahatchie County School Board accepted. In this town of 2,300 people, its high school of 415 black and white students has, to this day, always had separate proms: one black, one white prom. Our film follows the Charleston High senior class of 2008 preparing and attending their historic, first integrated prom, in the context of strong emotions, traditions, and conflict inherent in race relations in the community, and in the deep south. Some of the white parents maintained their whites-only prom. (Documentary)

Save the Date to Save The World

Bayside Rocks Music & Arts Festival scheduled for Saturday,
November 19, 2011 at Bayfront Park in Downtown Miami

A star-filled tribute to music legend Bob Marley will mark a concert extravaganza as the 2nd annual Bayside Rocks Music & Arts Festival offers up a jam-packed cavalcade of stars, and a day of peace, love & unity on November 19th 2011 in Miami, Florida.

This year’s Bayside Rocks will feature world music headliners Bunny Wailer, Luciano, Tabou Combo, Cultura Profetica, Gondwana, Warrior King and The Wailers, as well as some of world music’s most promising up-and-coming talent. Plus a special tribute to the Honorable Robert Nesta ‘Bob’ Marley on the 30th anniversary of his passing.

The Bayside Rocks Music & Arts Festival is scheduled for Saturday November 19, 2011 at Bayfront Park in Downtown Miami.

For additional information about corporate sponsorships and ticket sales for the 2011 Bayside Rocks Music & Arts Festival contact Margaret Kessler at 954-284-4819 or email her at media@rockazmvmt.com

If you can dream of a better world, you can make it happen.

For Alfonso D’Niscio Brooks, the driving force behind ROCKAZ MVMT, turning that dream into reality has become a vocational signature. Through the universal language of music, as well as a vision for the arts and cultural media, Alfonso has tapped into the social consciousness to uplift the spirit and inspire people of every ilk to give of themselves to help make the world a better place in which to live.

ROCKAZ MVMT produces a series of entertaining and fun-filled music/arts events around the world, all custom-tailored for the enjoyment of families and individuals of all ages and musical tastes. These masterful events feature multiple headliner acts, as well as some of the world’s most promising up-and-coming talent. Music, art, fashion and food from around the world provide the backdrop to a truly amazing cultural experience.

As befits its world-changing raison d’etre of empowering people to help people, ROCKAZ MVMT also is committed to changing the world through sound environmental practices. All ROCKAZ MVMT events incorporate myriad green initiatives (minimizing waste, recycling, etc.).

In the US, each spring ROCKAZ MVMT hosts the Miami Reggae Festival in Coconut Grove. With summer comes the annual Carifest NYC in New York City. And in the fall, Bayside Rocks Festival brings world music to downtown Miami. A fourth annual festival is slated to be inaugurated in Miami during Winter 2012. Additional festivals fill out the ROCKAZ MVMT calendar of events in North America.

But it takes more than great music to turn the dream of a better world into a reality. That’s why proceeds from ROCKAZ MVMT events are donated to established non-profit organizations that fight poverty, house the homeless and feed the hungry in the US and abroad. In fact, patrons are asked to bring at least two items of non-perishable food as a part of the cost of admission.

Changing the world for the better is an ongoing process in which ROCKAZ MVMT is proud to be a part. But perhaps the greatest gift we can offer people – and ourselves – is the empowerment that comes from knowing you can make a difference, and that we are in fact, making a difference.

Up For Debate Gender Secrecy Parental Right Or Child Abuse? 7/20/11

Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at 7:00 p.m.
Next@19th
137 NE 19th Street
Miami, FL 33132

Admission is free and this event is open to the public.

Gender identity questions surface recently as the buzz of “Baby Storm,” the infant being raised gender-neutral, hits the media. On Wednesday, July 20, 2011, Elizabeth Schwartz moderates Next@19th’s gender secrecy debate, a topic that sweeps the nation as an increasing number of families choose to conceal their children’s gender identities in effort to raise them in a gender-neutral environment.

In a format modeled after the ancient Sanhedrin which legislated Jewish law, ideas will be introduced by a central facilitator and put to audiences for debate. Join the Next@19th community as they discuss how the Jewish culture and this new controversial way of parenting can influence your child’s upbringing.

About Next@19th: Moving Jewish Culture Forward
Next@19th was founded in July 2010 to engage South Florida’s diverse community in fresh culture, learning and spiritual experience through a Jewish lens. Producing original programming, the organization will host a range of events and activities. The Miami Chophouse Bistro and Lounge received a “facelift” this past June 24 as invited guests were treated to the new designed restaurant. Inside the restaurant, there was a section where guest can easily lounge for a drink in comfortable leather seats. Samples of the restaurant’s new menu such as Kobe Beef sliders, lobster bisque, Shrimp cocktails and many more delighted the crowds at this opening. Different kinds of White and Red wine was served at different stations. The outside bar also served guests with various types of cocktails and is the perfect place for a happy hour amongst the cool breeze.

Reception: Thursday, June 16, 7-8:30 p.m.
Main Library

With a special collaboration from MARILYN GOTTLIEB ROBERTS and THE END
June 16 – September 13

This summer, as part of its year-long 40th anniversary celebration, the Miami-Dade Public Library System remembers the 1990s. That decade was a memorable time for the Library’s summer art tradition: exhibitions organized around one simple, culturally-loaded object or theme — shoes, boats, the alphabet, food, landscape, sound, dogs — with broad participation from many artists. Enter the Nineties adopts that format by inviting artists, writers, librarians, and cultural producers from Miami and elsewhere to trade zines (independent, do-it-yourself magazines or fanzines) with the Library. The Art Services and Exhibitions Department made a 90s throwback zine called Poetry and Power and will exhibit all the zines received in exchange.

Although zine culture dates back to 1930 or before, it flourished in the nineties. The show includes permanent art collection work from past summer shows, artists’ publications and seminal artists’ periodicals recently added to the permanent art collection; and the extensive array of traded zines and a lounge area for reading them.

For more information and a list of participating artists to date, check out the Library Exhibitions website. And you can also keep up with us on Facebook!

Downtown Miami Hosts Mayoral Debate 6/22/11 – This has been CANCELED.

Downtown Votes! Downtown Miami Hosts Mayoral Debate
Candidates to Face-Off on Issues Critical to Growing Downtown Community
Wednesday June 22, 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Gusman Center for the Performing Arts
174 E. Flagler Street
Miami

This Event Is Free And Open To The Public

As a kick-off of the Miami Downtown Development Authority’s Downtown Votes! campaign to encourage voter registration amongst new residents, the agency will partner with Miami Dade College and the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts to host a special debate between mayoral candidates, former Hialeah Mayor Julio Robaina and former Miami-Dade County Commissioner Carlos Gimenez, in advance of the June 28 run-off election.

At the event moderated by Michael Putney, the host of “This Week in South Florida” on WPLG, downtown constituents will have the opportunity to ask questions of both candidates regarding their plans to support continued growth and development within Miami’s urban core. City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado will also be in attendance and will provide a few brief remarks prior to the commencement of the debate.

More than 80 residential condo buildings were erected in downtown Miami during the boom, injecting new life into the district and forever changing the City’s skyline. Out of the ashes of the boom-turned-bust, a 24-7 community has emerged with more than 70,000 new residents now calling downtown Miami home.

And more residents mean more voters: since 2003, Downtown Miami’s registered voter population has surged 184% — giving a much needed voice to the County’s largest employment center and economic hub.

Miami Art Museum will present the first mid-career survey of the work of Brazilian artist Rivane Neuenschwander (b. 1967, Belo Horizonte, Brazil) focusing on over ten years of innovative practice. Neuenschwander’s work, which includes painting, photography, film, sculpture, immersive installations and participatory actions, combines conceptual rigor, sensory appeal, poetic evocation and viewer interaction. Rivane Neuenschwander: A Day Like Any Other (July 17 through October 16, 2011) punctuates the elements that have led to her reputation as one of the most unique contributors to contemporary Brazilian art.

Inspired by nature, time, life cycles, mysteries of perception and human exchange, Neuenschwander creates playful, sensual and often participatory artworks that blur distinctions between author, artwork and viewer. For some of the work on view, Neuenschwander is the sole creator. Other pieces are the result of collaborations with entities as varied as musicians, forensic artists, bar patrons, nature and the exhibition’s visitors. Motifs that repeat with regularity include mapping, measuring, trading and categorization.

“Rivane Neuenschwander is a very unusual artist in that many of her artworks are collaborations with ‘partners’ over which she has little or no control–rain, gravity, ants, the public,” said Peter Boswell, assistant director for programs/senior curator, Miami Art Museum. “She initiates situations and then lets them go, giving up control. That kind of generosity and openness is pretty rare and the results are often amazingly poetic.”

The exhibition, presented in Miami Art Museum’s plaza-level gallery, will include two of Neuenschwander’s immersive, viscerally beautiful installations, Rain Rains (2002) and I Wish Your Wish (2003). Rain Rains is an environment of dripping buckets, suspended from the ceiling to create an artificial rain environment. I Wish Your Wish is inspired by a tradition of a church in Bahia, Brazil, in which the faithful bind ribbons to their wrists and to the gates of the church; according to tradition, their wishes are granted when the ribbons wear away and fall off. In Neuenschwander’s version, visitors choose from thousands of ribbons printed with the wishes from past visitors to the installation and replace them with wishes of their own, turning private aspiration into collective responsibility.

The importance of film and literary sources can be seen in The Conversation (2010), a skewed homage to Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 film, and First Love (2005), a psychologically complex adaptation of Samuel Beckett’s novella by the same name. The Conversation, realized especially for this exhibition, is an immersive installation that investigates paranoia in an age in which privacy is no longer an individual’s natural right. In Neuenschwander’s First Love, visitors describe their ‘first love’ to a police sketch artist. The pencil sketches hang in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition, creating a very personal portrait gallery of perpetrators. In another work, A Thousand and One Possible Nights, Neuenschwander creates a calendar of constellation-like collages made by punching holes in pages of The Arabian Nights: Tales of 1,001 Nights.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Miami Art Museum has organized a satellite installation at Miami Dade College InterAmerican Campus, featuring a video art work in Miami Art Museum’s permanent collection entitled Quarta-Feira de Cinzas/Epilogue (Ash Wednesday/Epilogue). The video depicts ants laboriously hauling glittering pieces of multi-colored confetti into their holes, a reference to the aftermath of Carnival festivities in Brazil. The installation will be on view at InterAmerican Campus, 627 SW 27th Ave., Miami, FL 33135, from July 14 through August 7, 2011.

Introducing the Miami Debut of Art Avenue 6/11/11

Introducing the Miami Debut Art Avenue “A Different Way of Seeing Art”
Saturday, June 11, 2-10pm
Bodegon de Brickell
801 Brickell Bay Drive #2
Four Ambassadors [Restaurant & Bar]
Miami, FL 33131

Introducing to the public for the first time, a series of multi-media events from a pair of unique creators with a truly entrepreneurial vision. “Art Avenue” debuts this Saturday, June 11th, 2011 from 2pm-10pm at the Four Ambassadors Bodegon de Brickell (restaurant and bar) located at 801 Brickell Bay Drive #2 Miami.

“Art Avenue” Is: An event series and Art initiative where visual and fine arts meet production. The concept was created by CEO Laura Morello and Operations Manager Carina Belmonte who together started “Art Avenue” in Venezuela. Morello, with a background in social media and well on her way to achieving her Masters in film production here in Miami, and Belmonte, with a journalism degree who has worked closely with prominent media companies in Venezuela, are a tireless team with a grand vision of helping emerging and professional Artists of all genres achieve a voice and a platform in Miami for their work to be seen and sold.

Highlights: The debut “Art Avenue” event will include pre-recorded interviews playing on big screens featuring each individual artist’s talent and products for buyers and enthusiasts to preview. Clothing and accessory designers, some from Miami International University of Design including Morello’s own line of “So Kyut” accessories, will be featured on the “Art Avenue” runway next to booths where Artists; painters, designers, sculptors and otherwise creative minds will display their works both live and virtually by utilizing TV screens and the Internet. There will surely be surprises for guests to enjoy along with complimentary entrance, entertainment by a live local DJ and gourmet catering and cocktail specials.

Location: Brickell is the financial center of the major Arts and Entertainment – driven City of Miami, where multi-media and Art industry professionals collide. Today represents a new era of recession and do-it-yourself, where Art has been assigned a new identity by an information technology – obsessed and entrepreneurial generation. “We are holdong our first event in Brickell, where there are so many people who want to support the Arts” says Belmonte. “Art Avenue” is another creative solution born of the idea of the importance of bringing Art to the people.

In the Future: “Art Avenue” will be held every two to three months based on public demand and its creators’ instincts on where they feel the public will most likely enjoy it. With such an amazing start and the vision and drive of the professionals behind the concept, “Art Avenue” will surely be a name we all continue to hear about in Miami.

Leading South Florida Technology Executives To Discuss Practical Applications
Of Cloud Computing For Legal, Financial And Other Professional-Services Firms

Miami Finance Forum’s CEO Power Breakfast and Discussion Moderated by Kaufman, Rossin & Co., Features Speakers from Terremark, CareCloud, Compuquip Technologies and ICG

The Miami Finance Forum (MFF) will serve as host to a “CEO Power Breakfast” and panel discussion titled, “Breakfast in the Cloud: What You Need to Know about Cloud Computing.” The panel, moderated by Jorge Rey of Kaufman, Rossin & Co., will seek to demystify cloud computing and answer the main question on the minds of legal, finance and other professionals: “What exactly do ‘I’ need to know about cloud computing, and how can it support my business goals?” Unlike other panels that have covered cloud in broad, technical terms, this high-level discussion will provide practical strategies and tactics to leverage cloud services to benefit businesses. The event takes place at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, June 9, at The Bankers Club, 2 South Biscayne Blvd., Miami, FL 33131.

At the event, industry leaders will take a narrow approach to discuss and reveal practices that specifically relate to South Florida businesses in the professional-services industries. In addition, panelists will explore ways that cloud services can reduce a company’s IT expenses, enhance computing power, leverage software as a service (SaaS) applications and protect critical data.

Panel speakers include Marvin Wheeler, chief strategy officer with Terremark Worldwide, the operator of the Network Access Point (NAP) of the Americas, the only facility of its kind specifically designed to link Latin America with the rest of the world. The NAP of the Americas was sold to Verizon last month for approximately $1.5 billion to accelerate Verizon’s cloud computing strategy. Other speakers include:
· Albert Dosal, President & CEO, Compuquip Technologies
· Ed Gross, President, ICG
· Albert Santalo, Founder, President & CEO, CareCloud

The Miami Finance Forum (MFF) is a not-for-profit organization supporting the growth of South Florida’s network of finance and investment professionals. National Art Exhibitions by the Mentally Ill 23rd Annual Exhibition Opening 5/27/11

National Art Exhibitions by the Mentally Ill Holds 23rd Annual Exhibition Opening reception:
Friday, May 27, 2011. 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Borders Art Gallery
1601 SW 1st Street
Miami, FL 33135

Dates: From May 27 through June 24, 2011

The National Art Exhibitions by the Mentally Ill (NAEMI) marks its 23 years of service to outsider art with its 23rd Annual Exhibition on May 27, 2011 at Borders Art Gallery.
NAEMI’s mission is to reduce the stigma associated with mental disabilities by discovering, studying, promoting, exhibiting and preserving the art of artists with mental disabilities. NAEMI strives to increase public awareness, knowledge, and understanding of art that is conceived and created by artists with mental disabilities, and to provide opportunities for their employment through the exhibition and sale of art works. Art created by artists with mental disabilities, also referred to as Outsider Art, pertains to art produced by self taught individuals, usually without any formal artistic training, whose work arise from an intensity of innate-personal vision. Although there is an explosion of interest in this art, it remains difficult for the work of artists with mental disabilities to be discovered or seen.

For over 24 years NAEMI’s deep concern with the lack of opportunity for artists with mental disabilities to have equal access to art exhibitions and employment in the arts has created notable exhibitions and catalog books. This project seeks to further the understanding of Outsider Art, the creative process, and the art exhibition experience with a uniquely enthralling art interpretation performance as well as through the work of artists with mental disabilities. The absence of this artistic expression in the cultural mainstream limits the scope of study of the human creative process, marginalizes the presence of a member in the community, and may perpetuate the stigma of mental illness. Experts uniformly contend that the whole community should be educated on the impact of mental illness and advocate for its complete parity with physical illness.
NAEMI collaborates with international arts organizations, local civic leaders, and artists to provide penetrating presentations and creative workshops on issues relating to mental illness, creativity, and advocacy.

Featuring the works of artists from the U.S., England, Spain, Chile, Mexico, and Paraguay. The exhibition is open to the public and sponsored by Miami Dade County Cultural Affairs Council and the Miami Dade county commissioners, Johnson & Johnson and Janssen Pharmaceutica.

All 40 works featured in the exhibition will be available for sale with proceeds benefiting the artists and NAEMI’s goal of helping artists with mental illness from around the world.

The exhibition begins with an opening reception May 27 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. – offering attendees a chance to meet the featured artists – and will continue through June 24.

NAEMI an international organization dedicated to discovering, promoting and exhibiting work by artists with mental illness launches a new exhibition with an opening reception Borders Art Gallery.
