Swamp Stomp at Tobacco Road

Tremendously Talented Musicians Perform at Tobacco Road

Swamp-Stomp-Fri-7

In this day and age where it is prohibitively expensive to experience some truly amazing non local music, it was so beautiful to see good ole Tobacco Road offering up a melodic solution. The literal Miami institution which has been around for over 100 years hosted the 7th Annual Swamp Stomp that brought together some of the best bands you have probably never heard. For $10, YES ONLY $10, one could partake in a superb two night music festival headlined by the uber talented reggae band Jahfe and the amazingly captivating The Bright Light Social Hour (TBLSH). There were also $50 VIP tickets to benefit the benevolent charity Generation Miami that included admission, all you can eat BBQ including delicious Swamp (gator meat) Chilli and an open bar with a solid selection of liquor, not bottom wrung shitty well piss.

The show was held in the parking lot with a stage right under the matrix of ginormous cranes building Brickell’s epic new City Center. It was a pretty remarkable to see this burgeoning project as the festival backdrop. The Friday night show was dedicated to reggae with performances by the incredibly talented, local artists Don Sha, Johnny Dreadand headlined by Jahfe. We missed Johnny, but Don Sha and Jahfe were both truly amazing. Check out their music if you want to discover some worthwhile new bands.

The Saturday night show had an American Roots and Rock n’ Roll theme. We only made it to see Roosevelt Collier’s Phunk Phactory and The Bright Light Social Hour but both profoundly rocked it. The Phunk Phactory were really badass, they are a South Florida bred instrumental band that play awesome phunky ass Jazz. They finished off their magnificent set with two classic covers, Sly and the Family Stone’s “Thank You” and George Clinton’s “We Want the Funk.”

We actually stumbled upon The Bright Light Social Hour last year by accident at The Stage and fell IN LOVE. These guys are such a talented, under-the-radar group that fuses together psychedelic/rock/southern/jam into phenomenal dream-weaving music. Do yourself a huge favor and listen to their epic song “Detroit” right now. (You know you want to click on it.) Their mesmerizing songs get under your skin and then when these guys start to jam and rip on their guitars, you just float away with them into musical Nirvana. They mixed a lot of their new songs into this set which were good but it is their old stuff that goose bumps are made of. They even played a rousing cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get it On” in their encore.

We had so much fun at Swamp Stomp and were so fortunate to have gone to see amazing bands and discover new ones. Thank you, Tobacco Road. We hope you continue to have these terrific Stomps for your next century of existence.

Additional Information:

The River Of Art is a dynamic business networker and art showcase combined. We provide more than just a platform for professionals to get together, discuss business strategies, make connections and find clients or suppliers, we create synergies to help promote business by including a breathtaking art show!

Art is an inspiring talking point, whether you like a piece or are puzzled by it, discussing it is a great way to break the ice. Culture is one of the primary elements that build community. Hosting a business networker within an art show is a unique way to encourage socializing. Some events include live performances and other surprises!

Ernie Novo
My practice is primarily concerned with universal aspects of the human condition. Statements which hold true to all people anywhere in the world at any time. I am interested in the essence of what it is to be a sentient being so as to inspire greater self-awareness and harmony.

Gustavo Ramirez
I am a self-taught artist that is deeply influenced by the American Abstract Expressionists (Gorky, Hoffman, Pollock, de Kooning, Rothko, and Newman), Post-Impressionist van Gogh and the Neo-expressionists (Guston, Schnabel, and Basquiat). I believe fine art should be available and affordable to the common everyday person.

Jennifer Maria
Jennifer Maria grew up painting and drawing before immersing herself into photography. She intended to use her photographs as references for her paintings, but ended up falling in love with the process of creating and capturing with a camera. She produces mostly digital photography, however, she also delights in creating with black & white film. She happily engages much time, love & care into creating silver gelatin prints in her darkroom. She continues to paint– primarily on canvas, though she also enjoys utilizing the human body as canvas. Jennifer Maria draws inspiration from many sources: her dreams, her loved ones, travels, the ocean and more.

Cochon 555 Miami 2014

Goose Island Beer Company welcomed hundreds of guests to The Four Seasons Hotel and Cochon 555 this past Sunday afternoon. Cochon 555 is a tour that celebrates the sustainable farming of heritage breed pigs. Five chefs, Five pig breeds, Five wineries.  A cooking competition between five local chefs was the centerpiece of the event, but there were plenty of other activities and stations to check out.

My wife and I started with the Goose Island “Goose Nest” where the brewery paired two of its vintage ales with Foie Gras and other Duck items. But the rest of the event was focused on the pigs. Chefs Aaron Brooks, Conor Hanlon, Bradley Herron, Dena Marino and Jose Mendin each made five or six dishes for the guests to try. They were scattered throughout the banquet hall with other areas of interest to visit in between.

One of my personal favorites was “The Perfect Manhattan” station which was serving up terrific cocktails made with Templeton Rye and a few other terrific bourbons. There was a “Pop-Up Butcher Shop” where one of the pigs was butchered in a demonstration benefiting Johnson & Wales University. The butchered pig was sold on the spot. Oh yeah, and before the pig was cut up, the dudes from Miami Ink tattooed it with a Cochon 555 themed piece of art!

A cocktail competition called Punch Kings was another very popular spot. Five drinks using Breckenridge Bourbon were created for everyone to try. There were cheese stations, oysters, killer Prosciutto by Prosciutto di Parma, and several wineries. I did not miss the opportunity to sip on some Four Roses Bourbon either.

In the end, Chef Jose Mendin from Pub Belly prevailed as the winning “Prince of Porc!”

Great event! Can’t wait for next year.

Goose Island Beer Company Presents Cochon 555 at Four Seasons Miami

photo (12)Just cracked open a beer and poured it into my Goose Island beer glass. I know you think that’s just me lying for a good segue into this article, which is precisely why I took a picture to prove it to you!

OK, so seriously, I’ll be going to the Cochon 555 event on Sunday. And it’s going to kick ass! Read about the event, the chefs, the bourbon below. After the event, I’ll be posting pictures, entertaining commentary (duh), and whatever else I can think of. Since Goose Island is going out of their way to show you how to pair their vintage line of beers (which I adore) with all the pork, I’ll be talking about that part of the evening on my DailyBeerReview.com site. Tickets are still available. Click the link above to go to the event page if you’d like to purchase them. And heck, you see what I look like, so say hello! I’ll be the guy with the hot 40 something chick!

COCHON US TOUR & GOOSE ISLAND BEER CO. HUMBLY PRESENT COCHON555. Over 11 tons of heritage pork raised by family farms will be served across the country in a nose-to-tail touring culinary competition. Going on its sixth year, Cochon 555 is the nation’s premier culinary tour touting the flavor and health benefits of eating heritage breed pigs. The kickoff event features an all-star lineup of five chefs, five pigs and five wineries to celebrate breed diversity and family farming. A panel of 20 expert judges and guests of the event will vote for the city’s “Prince or Princess of Porc.”

This year’s competing chefs include Jose Mendin of The Pubbelly Group, Conor Hanlon of The Dutch, Bradley Herron of Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink, Aaron Brooks of EDGE Steak & Bar and Dena Marino of MC Kitchen. The five chefs, champions to the pig, will battle it out in a friendly competition by preparing a maximum of six dishes each created from one whole heritage breed pig to win votes from a crowd of hungry gourmands and celebrated judges. Jason Pringle of db Bistro Moderne will also prepare a feature sixth pig.

Host Chef Aaron Brooks, Executive Chef at Four Seasons Hotel Miami, will lead the pack of judges in selecting Miami’s “Prince of Porc.” Other notable judges include David Thomas from The Bazaar by Jose Andres, Timon Balloo of Bocce Bar and Chef Norman Van Aken following the release of his new book, No Experience Necessary. The winner will go on to compete in the Grand Cochon at the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen in June for bragging rights as the “King or Queen of Porc” and a four-day wine experience to Rioja, Spain’s most prominent wine region.

“Heritage Breed Pigs celebrate the history of the animal and this humane treatment is something all chefs should be behind,” states Jose Mendin. “I grew up on an island where this practice is normal and eating pig is an essential part of the culture, so it just seems the only way to me. As for the event, I’m so excited to compete, I can barely stand it. Such a great line-up of chefs; I’m eager to see what everyone puts out. Game on.”

A 1200+ pound showcase of heritage pig carved into 30 chef-prepared dishes will also include: “The Goose Nest,” an area featuring the Vintage Ales of Goose Island Beer Co. paired with Hudson Valley Foie Gras; live butchering demonstration at the Pop-Up Butcher Shop with Thomas Griese of Michael Mina 74, benefitting Johnson & Wales University with the support of Williams-Sonoma; different ages of Prosciutto di Parma ranging between 14 and 30 months, sliced by a roaming Berkel and by hand off a bone-in leg; the “Punch Kings” cocktail competition featuring five local barkeeps presented by Breckenridge Bourbon; a welcome cocktail from Four Roses Bourbon; the Bourbon Bar presented by Breadcrumb by Groupon featuring Eagle Rare, Buffalo Trace, Breckenridge Bourbon, Hirsch, Templeton Rye and Luxardo; libations including Crispin Cider, Wines of Rioja, Elk Cove Vineyards, Barlow Vineyards, and a Mezcal Bar with Fidencio and Mezcales de Leyenda; a TarTare Bar featuring Creekstone Farms; an artisan cheese bar with Rogue Creamery and La Brea Bakery; Swine & Sweets signature dessert course featuring Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams.

Defending his title from last year, Host Chef Aaron Brooks will kick off the weekend on Friday night with a guest chef dinner at EDGE Steak & Bar at the Four Seasons. Event judges include David Thomas from The Bazaar by Jose Andres, Timon Balloo of Bocce Bar and Chef Norman Van Aken following the release of his new book, No Experience Necessary.

“I’m passionate about promoting food sources that support a more natural, sustainable food system,” explains Brady Lowe, founder of Cochon 555. “For the first time ever, I am very pleased to welcome Goose Island Beer Co. into the family of events as a presenting sponsor of the 2014 U.S. Tour. One event cannot change the system, but together we can celebrate the chefs and farmers who continue to tilt the scales back towards responsibly grown food.”

The COCHON 555 event is 100% inclusive and always on Sunday.

Tickets for Cochon 555 events are $125 (general admission) and $200 (VIP). GENERAL ADMISSION price includes over 30 dishes prepared from the entirety of heritage breed pigs from nose to tail, paired with premium wines, brews and spirits. Both ticket prices includes endless drink and tons of food. GA starts at 5pm. VIP starts at 4pm, and includes one-hour early access to all the food (premium access to limited experiences like Punch Kings, wines and spirits), a chance to hang with the celebrity chefs, judges and media. Everyone is invited to the After Party at Edge Steakhouse, as always.

This epic porc event is over 1200 pounds of heritage pig packed with 100% flavor! Please keep in mind we sell about 60% of tickets before the complete event details are ever released, so if you like what you see, we suggest not waiting so buy a ticket. If you are interested in being a sponsor of Cochon, please contact us.

Pull up a chair and wet your whistle for an evening of anarchic theater, live music and strange goings-on as Miami Dade College’s (MDC) MDC Live Arts takes the theater into a favorite Miami destination: the bar. A runaway hit of the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe, National Theatre of Scotland’s The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart immerses audiences in a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience. The show is filled with rhyming couplets, whiskey shots and wittily wild karaoke as Prudencia’s story unfolds among and around them. This story of love, music and the Devil takes up residence for six performances at Bar 337 (formerly PAX), a bar at the intersection of Little Havana and Brickell from Wednesday, February 19 through Sunday, February 23, 2014.

One wintry morning, Prudencia Hart, an uptight academic, sets off to attend a conference in the Scottish Borders, the region of Scotland that borders England. As the snow begins to fall, she finds herself trapped in a secluded bar with strangers, only to be swept away on an enchanting, dream-like journey of self-discovery full of magical moments and devilish encounters.

Winner of the Herald Angel award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, “The Scotsman” gives it five stars and “The Herald” declares, “You shouldn’t miss this show for the world….(it’s) rambunctiously life affirming and touchingly beautiful.” The National Theatre of Scotland’s company of actors and musicians indulge audience in an evening of supernatural storytelling, music and theatre inspired by traditional Scottish Border Ballads, Robert Burns and the poems of Robert Service that “subverts the traditional poetic form” according to Scotland’s The Guardian.

MDC Live Arts Executive Director Kathryn Garcia was drawn to the unconventional production in 2012 after seeing it live in Washington DC. “It’s one of the top theater experiences I’ve ever had,” she said. “The show literally happens all around you. The cast – which serves as both the actors and the musicians – engages the audience with such inventiveness and fun that you can’t help but be swept up in its magic.”

The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart is the product of a weekend visit to a Kelso pub in the Scottish Borders by playwright David Greig, director Wils Wilson and composer Alasdair Macrae. What began as simple research on Scottish Border ballads soon became the inspiration for the show. Border ballads are a collection of songs from the region where England meets Scotland, a place with a long tradition of balladry. The Border ballads are usually sung unaccompanied and with no chorus, but with repeating motifs and recurring themes, often about the supernatural.

During National Anti-Bullying Week, National Voices for Equality, Education, and Enlightenment (NVEEE) will honor community members dedicated to making a difference in the lives of youth and families at their 3rd Annual “Not on My Watch” VIP Reception. This reception is attended by elected officials, business leaders, educators, community partners and parents who support bullying prevention efforts in the South Florida community and beyond.

Sponsored by community partners Kaufman, Rossin & Co and Printhouse USA, the event takes place on Friday, November 22, 2013 at Brasileiro Restaurant (801 Brickell Bay Drive, Miami, FL 33131) from 7:00p.m – 11:00p.m and will include a live auction and special performances by NVEEE Teen Spokesperson and Peace Ambassador, Katie Steel and a dance performance by NVEEE Peace Ambassador Jordynn Lurie. For more information about NVEEE visit http://www.NVEEE.org, or to purchase tickets ($25.00) visit http://tinyurl.com/mxbefzk.

The reception will be emceed by NBC Investigative Reporter, Willard Sheppard. 2013 Honorees include: George Castrataro of the Law Offices of George Castrataro, Lori Scott of “The Achievables” , Miami Beach City Commissioner Michael Gongora, New York Times Bestselling Author Laura Duksta, alongside community media partners She Magazine and Mark’s List.

The organization is excited to welcome Dr. Bober as a special guest speaker. “Bullying remains a complex social phenomenon, which has an impact on virtually all aspects of society, said Psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Bober, Medical Director of Pediatric Psychiatry at Joe Dimaggio Children’s Hospital. “We must continue to pursue evidence based interventions and public policy changes to provide a safe and nurturing environment for all of our children.”

The purpose of the reception is to continue fundraising efforts which allows NVEEE to sponsor bullying and harassment prevention workshops throughout Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties. Education is an essential component of how NVEEE engages families and communities in moving towards social change. In four years, NVEEE has reached over 15,000 students, parents, educators and administrators through its signature “Not on My Watch” School-wide Bullying & Harassment Prevention Program, and was recently featured on an episode of ABC’s “Secret Millionaire” for their work in the community.

Their signature “Not On My Watch” Bullying & Harassment Prevention Program teaches students social skills, how to model specific actions, and demonstrates ways of being and behaving that can empower students to reduce peer-harassment, as well as reduce self-harm. “Not On My Watch” serves as a catalyst to support peer-led intervention to alter school cultures around bullying. Additionally, Workshop Surveys are used to assess the school’s and community’s specific needs, and to capture data unique to each school’s social and ecological frameworks — a practice recommended in leading bullying prevention research.

This work would not be possible without the support of continued sponsors including: Kaufman, Rossin & Co., Printhouse USA, Erin Mia Milchman, Brasileiro Restaurant, Miami Events Photobooth, Sky High Design, Freedom Concierge Services, Tito’s Vodka and Allure Rejuvenation and Anti-Aging Spa.

Planet Beach Launches New Franchise Location in Brickell
Local business owner Natasha Gelman becomes one of the newest franchisees and will celebrate with a Grand Opening party in November

Located on the Mezzanine level of 1060 Brickell, Planet Beach Brickell brings self-automated spa services and the contempo spa concept to hundreds of busy working women (and men) in the Brickell and Downtown Miami area. After months of renovation, the location is finally ready for its close-up and plans to showcase its services with a two-day Grand Opening party, November 8th and 9th.

At the age of 16, Ukranian-born immigrant Natasha Gelman arrived in Miami with her family and not a penny to her name. Through hard work, perserverence and a realty business, Natasha has since amassed ownership in three well-known Miami restaurants. As a busy working woman herself, Natasha began frequenting a Planet Beach location in Miami Beach and, according to her, “fell in love with the Contempo Spa concept.” She added that, “The feeling I got when going to this spa kept me coming back week after week and that is the feeling I wanted to bring to more women like me.”

Brickell is full of people who need a way to relax, unwind and de-stress and industry trends indicate that more consumers are making spa services part of their regular personal wellness regimens. However, traditional day spas can become expensive and difficult to incorporate into a busy schedule. Eighty-three percent of spas have made changes such as increasing treatment options, offering retail products, adding new spa programs and offering shorter treatment durations. This recipe for success was pioneered by Planet Beach, as it was the first company to challenge the concept of the traditional day spa by offering high-quality automated spa services that are convenient and affordable.

Planet Beach evolved into the spa industry in 2005 by expanding beyond tanning options to introduce its Relax, Glow and Renew categories of services to customers. Today it offers more than 20 push button automated spa services including massages, facials, hydration treatments, teeth whitening, red light therapy, as well as nutritional supplements and a skincare line. The automated spa is a unique spin on the traditional day spa giving customers control and offering them unlimited access to a full suite of spa services for a low monthly membership fee.

The monthly membership model allows customers to easily budget for spa services knowing the price they will pay for their monthly wellness needs. Planet Beach offers convenience for customers with self-automated services all in one location. Service times can be controlled to fit into a busy schedule or make for a relaxing day at the spa. Consumers are moving toward this new model for day spas and choosing affordable, convenient services over traditional spa options.

The second Wednesday of every month is gallery night at Red Bar Gallery. Each month a different artist is featured, and in November the featured artist will be Renda Writer, a “found object artist” who makes art out of things that he finds… an air conditioning vent, a few automobile hubcaps, tons of wood from furniture, some random street signs, and a ceiling tile. All of these objects and more have been repurposed as art by Renda. He writes poems, phrases, adages, affirmations, and repetative statements on them and turns them into what he calls, “handwritten found object art.” He will have over 85 pieces of work on display, and is billing the night as a “blowout sale,” saying that, “no reasonable offer on my art will be refused.”

The Brian Lynch Afro-Caribbean Jazz Artist Ensemble, conducted by Grammy Award winning trumpeter and Frost School of Music professor Brian Lynch, performs original compositions and new arrangements of modern jazz repertory in the exciting and propulsive idiom known as Latin Jazz. Professor Lynch directs his hand picked ensemble of talented young musicians and performs with them as his own group.

Standards will be kept high and protocol will be firmly in place to encourage the best musical result for players and listeners in the unique and informal atmosphere of PAX!

LA CHIVA GANTIVA starts in Brussels with a group of Colombian percussionists playing together, in order to feel closer to their homeland and its rich musical heritage. Pushed by a desire to assert their roots and reproduce Colombian rhythms of yesteryear, like less well known rhythms such as the «champeta», the «chirimia» and the «mapalé», LA CHIVA GANTIVA uses traditional Caribbean instruments such as «la tambora», «el alegre», «el llamador» and «maracones». LA CHIVA GANTIVA does not stop there, they also incorporate instruments like the bass guitar, the clarinet and the saxophone which reflect the diverse influences of the group: Colombian (with the likes of Toto la Moposina, Lucho Bermudez and Petrona Martinez), Latin (Fania All Stars, Irakere), African (Fela Kuti and Tony Allen), Jazz (Lionel Hampton), Funk (the legendary James Brown) and Rock (Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rage Against the Machine).

The result of this soundclash is a unique musical style and explosive on-stage energy, that has opened their path to many big festivals throughout Europe. Since 2005, La Chiva Gantiva has played in the biggest festivals in Belgium, Portugal, Holland and Germany. La Chiva Gantiva continues to grow and to build upon their compelling and inspiring musical universe.

DJ Le Spam & Spam Allstars blend improvisational electronic elements and turntables with latin, funk, hip hop and dub to create what they call an electronic descarga. It’s not a known genre. It’s hard to describe. It attracts many types of people. But as they look out and see people dancing salsa, next to break-dancers, and festival-goers driving for hours to catch a show — they know something very special is going on.

Spam Allstars were formed by Andrew Yeomanson, a/k/a DJ Le Spam, who was raised in Toronto, Bogota and London, and has called Miami home since 1993. He got his start by playing guitar in Haitian band Lavalas, and recording and touring with Miami based artist Nil Lara. Along the way he added to his vinyl collection, and when off the road he would DJ locally. These DJ gigs evolved into collaborations with live musicians, performing on an internet radio show, recording in his home studio, and the first of many residencies combining his samplers & DJ skills with a live band.

In 2002, Spam Allstars began a weekly residency at Hoy Como Ayer in Little Havana, which continues today. In 2003 they started monthly residencies in New York City, Gainesville, Tampa, Atlanta, and New Orleans, and playing nationally wherever people would host them. Today they perform 200+ shows, and average 56,000 miles each year.

The Miami Big Sound Orchestra is downtown Miami’s resident Latin Jazz big band since 2006, a project formed as a collaboration of musicians from Miami’s jazz and Latin music communities. The band combines 21st-century big band jazz with Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music, funk, and soul.

Hailing from all over the western hemisphere, the members of the MBSO are all veteran Miami musicians who have performed and toured with artists such as Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan, Issac Delgado, Jon Secada, Chayanne, Rey Ruiz, Tito Nieves, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, Chaka Khan, and the Funk Brothers, to name a few.

The band’s repertoire, inspired by the music of Issac Delgado, Ray Barretto, Machito, Willy Rosario, Paquito D’Rivera, Irakere, and Tito Puente, includes original compositions by Rafael “Cali” Valencia (legendary Miami bassist/composer), Chino Nunez (Grammy-Award winning producer), and Jaui Schneider (former pianist/composer for Ray Barretto), as well as classics from legends such as the great Mario Bauza.

Among his many achievements, Brian Lynch has long been known as a great conductor of the jazz jam session. As a member of the house band at the legendary Star Cafe sessions in the New York City of the early 1980s, with Junior Cook and Harold White, and as bandleader of the late night jams at the NY Blue Note in the 1990s, Lynch absorbed the philosophy and practice of the session at its highest level. Now he brings his knowledge and love of the form to Miami and PAX.

Practitioners of all genres from traditional to contemporary, from straight ahead to Afro-Cuban and world music, will be encouraged to participate and cross pollinate, young students and established artists alike. Standards will be kept high and protocol will be firmly in place to encourage the best musical result for players and listeners in the unique and informal atmosphere of PAX!

Brian Lynch

A vital force and emergent legend within both the hardcore straight ahead and Latin Jazz communities, Grammy© Award Winner Brian Lynch is as comfortable negotiating the complexities of clave with Afro-Caribbean pioneer Eddie Palmieri as he is swinging through advanced harmony with bebop maestro Phil Woods. A honored graduate of two of the jazz world’s most distinguished academies, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and the Horace Silver Quintet, he has been a valued collaborator with jazz artists such as Benny Golson, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Charles McPherson; Latin music icons as diverse as Hector LaVoe and Lila Downs; and pop luminaries such as Prince. As a bandleader and recording artist he has released 19 critically acclaimed CDs featuring his distinctive composing and arranging, and toured the world with various ensembles reflecting the wide sweep of his music. He currently is Professor of Jazz Trumpet at the Frost School Of Music, University of Miami as well as conducting clinics and workshops at prestigious institutions of learning the world over. His talents have been recognized by top placing in the Downbeat Critics and Readers Polls (#3 Trumpet 2011 Critics Poll); highly rated reviews for his work in Downbeat, Jazziz and Jazz Times; 2005 and 2007 Grammy award nominations, and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Chamber Music America, and Meet The Composer.
