Help Raise Funds for Hurricane Matthew Relief
Local businesses come together to organize a bake sale where all funds will go to help the women and girls of Haiti

This year South Florida residents were very lucky that Hurricane Matthew missed them. After seeing the devastation in Haiti, Daniella Biffi, Managing Director and Founder of Pollen Theory- a local PR firm, decided to bring together local businesses and members of the community to donate their products and services to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Matthew at a local bake sale.

Every last penny donated will go to Heart to Heart International, who’s PowrServ program helps women and girls by donating ”Women’s Hygiene Kits.” This organization is recognized for its dedication to strengthening communities by improving health access, humanitarian development and administering crisis relief worldwide. This charity ranks amongst the highest on the Charity Navigator website.

Bake Sale Information:

Why: Women and girls are particularly vulnerable in the developing world when there’s a crisis situation like a natural disaster. We wanted to focus our efforts in helping them deal with Hurricane Matthew’s devastation with dignity.

What: All proceeds will go to the PowrServ program, who puts together the women hygiene kits. Each kit includes: 2 pairs of underwear, 2 reusable menstrual pads, washbowl, 2 bars of soap, 4 condoms, a whistle, crank flashlight, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, Band-Aids, hand towel, wash cloth, nail clippers and the following educational materials: Menstrual Health, Stay Safe Use a Condom, Pad Use/Care, Stay Healthy Wash Your Hands.

The kits cost $20 each and are invaluable to these girls. Our goal is to raise enough money to provide 100 kits to the women and girls of Haiti.

For those who won’t be able to attend the bake sale and still want to make a donation please visit: https://www.gofundme.com/hurricane-relief-for-girls-in-haiti-2tzb2x8

Awards given at the LEGENDS BALL: Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen for Outstanding Political & Social Leadership, Jowharah Sanders for her work with Youth & Women’s Empowerment, Hernan Valverde for his Relentless Leadership & Conviction to the community.

Miami, Florida… Enjoy a moonlit evening of music, dancing, talent, food & drink, and honoring some amazing people, on the evening of Friday, September 16th, 2016 for our annual LEGENDS Ball in one of Miami’s oldest and grandest homes, Warner Place. This impressive Neo-Classical building was designed for J.W. Warner, founder of South Florida’s first floral company. The home’s fine craftsmanship is especially evident in its massive columns, Palladian window and porte-cochère. The house was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and has been restored to its original splendor by the Miami Hispanic Cultural Arts Center, under the direction of Pedro Pablo Peña, and home to Creation Ballet, opera, dance & various cultural institutions.

Since 2010, our Unity Coalition|Coalición Unida (UC|CU) LEGENDS Ball and Leaders, Legends & Lovelies Honors Awards has celebrated the good, positive & outstanding within our LGBTQ & ally community. Through the annual recognition we bring the community together to focus on the similarities rather than the differences we all share, and how we can inspire others to do good, excel, be proud of who they are & just be better people. This year we are proud to Honor Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen for Outstanding Political & Social Leadership, Jowharah Sanders for her work with Youth & Women’s Empowerment, Hernan Valverde for his Relentless Leadership & Conviction to the community.

Sponsored by Jackson Health, Creation Ballet & the Hispanic Cultural Arts Center, the Legends Ball will host an incredible line up of entertainment and talent, including songstress EnVee from NBC’s The Winner and Telemundo’s Yo Soy El Artista; the legendary female illusionist & comedienne Adora, internationally acclaimed DJ Citizen Jane, samplings of Miami’s finest cuisine, and may more surprises!

Our work is 100% funded by events & private donations, and we are 100% staffed & managed by volunteers. Everything that comes in, goes right back out for programming, leading & assisting our community to fairness & equality.

iPads For Soldiers mission is to purchase and donate iPads to US Soldiers serving in Afghanistan and those wounded stateside in military hospitals.

After Winnie Pritchett’s oldest son, Wesley, a WestPoint 08′ graduate who flies Kiowa Helicopters was deployed to Jalalabad, Afghanistan she learned that many of our deployed warriors serve in remote regions and have very limited access to TV, internet, cell phones, and no way to carry heavy books or computers in their 110-lb rucksacks. It became obvious to her that the typical care package of candy and magazines wasn’t enough. They needed something that allowed them to speak with their families back home, apps that could help them cope with strenuous situations, the ability to share photos with loved ones, watch movies, listen to music, read books, and even learn new skills and stay up to date on their training… what they really need is an iPad.

On Saturday, July 16, join us for a “Brunch and Bowl to Strike out Bullying” networking event in order to raise money to send 130 high school students to NVEEE’s Peace Ambassador Leadership Summit (PALS). Whether you are a young professional just entering the workforce, or someone more seasoned and ready for retirement, we can all agree on one thing, BULLYING HURTS and it has a lifetime effect on everyone involved! This is an opportunity for you to make a difference in the lives of teens by connecting with other professionals and networking for a good cause.

**Please Note**

You may donate to a team to help raise money even if you’re not able to attend by simply clicking “Donate” instead of “Join”. All donors will be prompted to create a free account, and even if you’re not attending it will ask for your shirt size. If we have any left over shirts you might receive a surprise in the mail.

Your donation will help cover the cost of housing, meals, t-shirts, and tuition for at-risk and low income students to attend PALS; a 10-day leadership conference for students who commit to being upstanders instead of bystanders when it comes to bullying and harassment. Whether students are looking to expand their leadership and social skills, learn peer mediation, enhance their public speaking and job interviewing ability, learn to write an impactful resume or to simply develop conflict resolution skills, PALS is here to help students obtain all of those skills in a safe space among a diverse group of their peers. More importantly, all students will practice showing empathy, tolerance, and respect for others.

When we talk about civic engagement, problem solving, and the future of Miami, we hear the same two questions: where are the young people and who is engaging the next generation of leaders?

To help answer those questions, the New Leaders Council (NLC) Miami invites you to an evening of cocktails and celebration on June 9 from 6 PM to 10 PM at the Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove. Meet the 2016 fellows at our graduation and fundraiser and help us build a more civically engaged Miami!

NLC Miami is one of the premier chapters of a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to recruit, train, promote, and network the next generation of progressive social and political entrepreneurs. We bring a diverse group of rising stars together for a leadership institute that develops their practical skills, focuses their impact work goals, and connects them with local leaders in politics, government, business, education, the arts and sciences, and the nonprofit sector.

With your support, we can continue to plant the seeds for dynamic collaborations among people and organizations that would never have come together but for NLC. We want you to get to know our fellows (past and present) and we know you will be energized by the experience. It takes a village, and Miami is ours. Join us, celebrate, and help us build a community we are all a part of!

Tickets and sponsorship packages are available at a variety of levels. All tickets include open bar during the event (21+)! Take advantage of early bird pricing and purchase your tickets at this link: http://miami.newleaderscouncil.org/cmaddennewleaderscouncilorg/2016_fellows_fundraiser

Just My Height Art Shows® brings fine art to young children’s eye level by displaying professional quality fine art at 36 inches high. Talking Off the Wall Magazine has been documenting the South Florida street-art scene for the past two years. These two organizations have joined forces to produce “Secret Doors,” a fine art show that will proudly feature 15 of South Florida’s best street artists and muralists to benefit ArtCares for Kids.

Sponsored by The Florida House Experience, VITAS Healthcare, Artist & Craftsman Supply, Aventura Mall and others, the show will feature family friendly street- and mural-style artwork.

The opening will feature games and hands-on art activities designed to engage patrons with the exhibits. Persons of all ages—from 2 to 102—are welcome to enjoy complementary light bites and age-appropriate beverages, including sponsored adult beverages provided by Peroni beer, with an open bar from 6 to 8 p.m., and a cash bar from 8 to 10 p.m.

A portion of the proceeds from the show will be donated to ArtCares for Kids, a Miami-based organization that takes art activities to children undergoing cancer and other intensive medical treatments at Jackson Memorial Holtz Children’s Hospital and Baptist Children’s Hospital. ArtCares for Kids will receive copies of a special coloring book comprised of the artwork being shown at the event. The idea is to bring together people of diverse political backgrounds for a night of fellowship. Meet old friends and make new ones!

The name “Dance Party” comes from my belief of only trusting a dance party, being politically/civically involved but not loyal to a political party, making me the “NPA Rebel”. Our music scene lost Bryan Modesto late last year. Bryan wasn’t a musician but he attended more shows than most. We decided to throw this fundraiser for his family when we saw first hand the astronomical cost of death. Then recently, we were all hit with the news of Ariel Gonzalez’s ongoing struggle with cancer. Ariel is hands down one of the best punk rock guitarists around. Seeing as Ariel’s battle with cancer is a costly one, we decided to host this fundraiser for both Bryan and Ariel. If you can’t make the show but wish to donate please visit their gofundme pages. Benefiting Miami Culinary Institute & the Hispanic Food and Beverage Foundation.

The second annual edition of Taste of Miami–a dynamic charity event showcasing the unique and stylish flavors of South Florida through a delectable selection of culinary bites, premium spirits, and craft beverages from the city’s top restaurants–will take place Thursday, February 18, 2016 at Marlins Park. The evening will be hosted by renowned celebrity chef and Miami native Adrianne Calvo, as well as Miami Marlins All-Star pitcher Jose Fernandez. Proceeds from this event under the stars will benefit the Marlins Foundation, the Hispanic Food and Beverage Foundation, and the Miami Culinary Institute’s Joanna Rodriguez Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Taste of Miami targets the vast population of culinary enthusiasts in the South Florida area, but also aims to attract a diverse demographic of general consumers who enjoy food, drink, and participation in charitable endeavors. The proceedings were inspired by the memory of Miami Culinary Institute student Joanna Rodriguez, who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 20 in December 2014.
Ms. Rodriguez was a beloved member of the school’s student body whose passion for the culinary arts and brightening the lives of those around her was exemplified by her ever-present smile and compassionate spirit. In memory of Joanna’s talent, dedication, and love of her craft, the Marlins Foundation, in conjunction with the Hispanic Food and Beverage Foundation and the Miami Culinary Institute, forged the concept of a night featuring some of the preeminent talents in the celebrated Miami food and wine landscape.

“It’s an honor to be able to serve as co-host of an event that ultimately celebrates both the culinary arts and the memory of an aspiring student who dreamt of a career in the field”, remarks Chef Adrianne. “The fact that the night will help launch the university careers of two students who also want to embark on this path provides me with even greater inspiration to be a part of it.”
Funds raised from the event will go towards the funding of two Miami Culinary Institute scholarships for deserving Hispanic high school and college students looking to embark on a career in the Food and Beverage industry.

In addition to providing attendees with a diverse and multi-course array of Miami’s unique flavors, taking place on Thursday, February 18, Chef Adrianne and Jose Fernandez will judge a live “Chef Showdown” that featuresTelemundo’s Chef James Tahhan returning to defend his MVP Master Chef title alongside a Miami Marlins All-Star alumni player serving as his sous chef. Exhibiting restaurants and microbreweries will also compete for the coveted Taste of Miami “Grand Slam” award. The Grand Slam award is a “Best In Show”-form of recognition that will be determined by votes from the event’s attendees on each contest participant’s performance in the categories of Table Presentation and Taste. The winning entry will receive a 2016 Taste of Miami Grand Slam Trophy and a $1000 donation will also be made to the participant’s 501c3-classified charity of choice.

Sedano’s and the Great Milk American Drive invite the South Florida community to join the fight against hunger

What:
In support of The Great American Milk Drive, the first-ever nationwide program to deliver gallons of milk to hungry families, who need it most, Sedano’s invites local communities to join the fight against hunger by making a small donation at checkout and help Feeding America, a nationwide network of food banks, deliver a nutrient-rich gallon of milk to a family in need (donations can be from $1, $3 or $5). Meeting the demand for milk has been a challenge for Feeding America due to the lack of donations. Milk is much harder to donate because it is perishable. Meanwhile, more than 48 million Americans – including 306,330 in Miami-Dade County – struggle with food insecurity. Sedano’s can help to provide gallons of milk directly to a local Feeding America food bank by accepting donations at checkout from December 2 through December 31.

Who:
Sedano’s will host a media event to promote the Great American Milk Drive’s donation campaign. Diahann Smith, Marketing Director Communications from Florida Dairy Farmers; and Pedro Mesa, Sedano’s Supervisor, will be available during the media event to discuss the details of their campaign and explain how it is now easier for Miami residents to lend a hand and contribute nutritious milk to food insecure families. The goal of the Great American Milk Drive campaign is to deliver milk to food banks across the country, and Miami residents can help meet that goal by contributing to their local drive and assisting local families.

Media:
If you are interested in attending, please contact María Rosa Collazo at mcollazo@república.net.

Women In Distress of Broward County, Inc. is hosting its 17th Annual SAFEWALK-RUN 5K on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in Davie. Registration is now open for all walkers and runners, and their four-legged friends. Proceeds benefit Women In Distress of Broward County, Inc., the only nationally accredited, state-certified, full service domestic violence center serving Broward County.

More than 1,000 community members (and their furry friends) will take to the pavement to raise awareness about domestic violence and help Women In Distress reach its goal of raising $150,000, which can provide 1,500 nights of safe shelter for adults and children affected by domestic violence. Registration begins at 7:30 am. The event will kick off with a warm up, followed by timed race for runners and a more leisurely stroll for walkers, strollers and dogs at 9:00am.

Come out and walk or run in honor of those affected by domestic violence. Domestic violence survivors will be cheering on walkers and runners along the route and also walking alongside supporters celebrating the brave steps they’ve taken toward a new violence-free life. February is also Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month and information on domestic violence will be available for all participants.

A registration fee is required in order to participate. Pre-registered adults are $25, students are $20, youth participants, ages 6-12 are $15 and dogs can walk for $10 (must be registered with a participating adult or teen). Kids ages 5 and under are free. SAFEWALK participants will enjoy a complimentary breakfast and T-shirt. Kids can enjoy a variety of fun activities and everyone can visit local vendors within our vendor village. Thank you to our sponsors, including Host Sponsor Nova Southeastern University, JM Family Enterprises, Inc., SE Toyota, Sun Sentinel, Thomas Family Foundation, and Ultimate Software for helping keep families safe.

Register now at http://widbc.convio.net/SafeWalk2016 and your registration fee can make a difference by providing the cost of answering two calls for help on our 24-Hour Crisis Hotline.

Help support programs dedicated to eliminating the digital divide and the homework gap in Miami. EveryoneOn, a national nonprofit supported in significant part locally by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, is participating in GiveMiamiDay 2015, a 24-hour online fundraiser to help energize its local activities to connect low-income families to affordable high-speed home Internet. For many Miami-Dade students, sitting in a McDonald’s parking lot, a city park, or riding public transportation is the only way to complete homework assignments. This not only puts them at a disadvantage, but keeps the family from accessing opportunities and information which could open doors to a brighter future. Don’t let Miami-Dade families rely on unsecure mobile phone Internet or public wifi, get them connected!

Miami, the city you and I love is ranked one of the top US cities in human trafficking for sex trade. We want to help the survivors among us by building Miami’s first long-term facility, named Glory House of Miami which will also offer medical, spiritual, mental health, social, legal support, reintegration, education, arts, vocational training, job and life skills training to recover and give these 18-25 year old survivors a second chance at rebuilding their lives.

Your support via a donation for our silent auction will be invaluable to reach our goal at this event; “Freedom and Arts” to come out of the streets will help trafficking survivors build a new future.
