Florida Foster Care Review’s 12th Annual Claws For Kids Luncheon at Joe’s Stone Crab Restaurant is set for Monday, November 6, 2017, 11:30am- 2pm.

Florida Foster Care Review promotes the safety, well-being and long-term success of abused and neglected children through volunteer-driven case reviews and system level advocacy. They contribute to developing a child welfare system that protects, heals, and supports success for the children and families subject to it.

FFCR holds an annual luncheon where Miami’s top community leaders gather at Joe’s Stone Crab in Miami Beach to support children and youth in foster care. To ensure safety and stability of these kids, proceeds from the event will help make sure these abused and neglected children continue to progress. Various sponsorship level packages available and start at $300. The Rusty Pelican will be hosting a benefit, Pouring for a Cause, to raise funds for those people impacted by Hurricane Irma. Guests will be treated to cocktails created specifically for the event by some of South Florida’s best bartenders, including Rusty Pelican’s own resident mixologist Oscar Amaya. The evening will include over fifteen different drink stations supported by beverage brands distributed in Florida by Breakthru Beverage including Soul Premium Cachaça, Stoli THE Vodka, Galliano L’Autentico, Lucas Bols, Hendrick’s Gin, Papa Pilar Rum, SuerteTequila, Red Bull Energy Drinks, Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum, VOSS Water, Flora de Cana Rum, Old Forester Collection, Herradura Tequila, Michter’s Whiskeys, Gallo Wines, and others. Miami New Times’ Iron Fork celebrates its tenth anniversary Thursday, October 5, 2017, at the Hyatt Regency Miami. Dining enthusiasts can enjoy dishes from some of the finest restaurants in South Florida. The event’s footprint will extend into the James L. Knight Center’s world-class theater and entertainment venue next door.

This year’s Iron Fork will grow exponentially, bringing culinary creations from more than 75 of South Florida’s luxury and fine-dining restaurants, including Amore de Miami, the Brick, Toro Toro, Texas de Brazil, Cibo Wine Bar, Morton’s Steak House, Dr. Limon Ceviche, Caja Caliente, Wine Date, Sensory Delight, Soyka, and Kaori, to name a few.

In addition, New Times is proud to announce a partnership with the Miami Rescue Mission. For almost a century, its outreach centers have been housing the homeless across South Florida. Today the mission’s Miami-Dade and Broward centers serve more than 1,300 men, women, and children each day. Last year, the organization served more than a million meals, many of them to hungry children. It also houses approximately 800 people in residential, life-changing programs. Guests can participate in a special raffle during the event, with 100 percent of all proceeds going to support the cause.

As in past years, celebrated chef Allen Susser will host the Chef Competition, a fierce fight to the culinary finish between two of Miami’s hottest toques. The competitors will be announced soon!

The epicurean event will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. for general admission ticket holders and will bring together thousands of young professionals, local businesses, and foodies for an evening of gourmet food selections, tasty libations, and live entertainment. Guests who prefer a more intimate dining experience can purchase VIP tickets, which include entry to the event one hour early, at 6 p.m., and access to a private VIP bar and lounge area with complimentary Estrella Damm beer, Voga Italia wine, and Barton & Guestier sparkling wine. The Tank Brewing Company is joining forces with Frankie Ruiz, co-founder of the Miami Marathon, to bring the first ever Craft Beer 5K Run to South Florida. The race is open to everyone –including
runners and beer lovers of all kinds– and will depart from The Tank Brewing Co. on Saturday, September 30 at 6:00 p.m.

The net proceeds of the Run will benefit two South Florida-based nonprofit
organizations, Amigos For Kids, an organization dedicated to child abuse prevention and strengthening families, and Live Like Bella Foundation, which supports childhood cancer research.

Miami Dade College (MDC) celebrates I AM MDC DAY (www.mdc.edu/iammdc/), an annual day of giving and pride honoring the College’s rich history and unparalleled impact on the community, Wednesday, Sept. 6.

Fifty-seven years ago on Sept. 6 1960, Miami Dade College opened the door to the American Dream. Today, more than two million alumni can say “I AM MDC” because MDC afforded them the opportunity to pursue a college education – the ticket to a better future – that for many was otherwise out of reach.

The 24-hour celebration will highlight the achievements of MDC alumni, students, staff, and faculty; inspire pride; and increase awareness of the College’s profound educational, economic and cultural significance to South Florida and beyond.

The event will focus on engaging the MDC community to post stories, tweets, share images and videos about their alma mater and what I AM MDC means to them, on social media and using #iammdc. Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade will present its annual black-tie “Wild About Kids” Gala on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017 at the JW Marriott Marquis Miami. The theme of this year’s event is “The Great Gatsby.” Proceeds will benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s many positive programs, including after school programs, homework assistance, computer training, social skills, dance, arts & crafts, professional mentoring, and summer and athletic programs, for area children who need them the most.

Guests are invited to don their best white attire for the annual Masterpiece event, a chic cocktail reception featuring mixed media artist Cory Bennett. The party, called “20” for the museum’s 20th anniversary, will feature live entertainment as well as heavy hors d’oeuvres, wine and beer and a signature cocktail.

“Iconic Neo-POP,” a new show created by mixed media artist Cory Bennett, will be featured in the main gallery. Bennett combines pop themes, iconic images and neo-expressionist techniques to produce work that is wary of modern society. Born and raised in Las Vegas, Bennett has his own unique style of art that combines an urban “street” style with the use of found-media, providing the artist with an endless supply of complex and relevant subject matter.

In addition to Bennett, the Florida Watercolor Society will be featured in the East and Kuhn galleries. This 46th exhibition will feature works from Iain Stewart and Bev Jozwiak and is also part of the Society’s annual convention, which will bring nearly 500 artists from around Florida to Coral Springs.

Bubbles, Michael Jackson’s Chimp, Really Does Paint!

Miami, June 8, 2017: After great success at Art Basel 2012, the paintings by Michael Jackson’s chimpanzee, Bubbles, and many others will be on display for 10 days at Frames USA & Art Gallery in Miami. The opening reception will be on July 21, 2017 from 6pm-10pm where the public can view and purchase a very unique piece of original ape art.

“Purchasing a piece of original art by apes is a collectible. It creates conversation, it is a form of expression, and it is rare”, Adam Brand says, owner of Frames USA. “Not to mention that the proceeds from the sales of the art will go to an amazing cause”

Over the years, zoos and sanctuaries have dabbled into selling artwork at their gift shops by resident animals to raise money. However, the purpose of this art show, Apes that Paint, extends beyond that. It seeks to establish the fact that apes are artists without judgment and second that these ape artists are contributing to the fundraising efforts for The Center for Great Apes, located in Wauchula, Florida.

Aside from artworks from our star artist Bubbles, the exhibition will host other wonderful original pieces from celebrity apes. Among them, the art of chimpanzees from Planet of the Apes, and orangutans from the movie Going Apes, and NBC’s soap opera Passions. Missing Children is an epidemic that plagues our global community every single day. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children reports that roughly 800,000 children are reported as missing in the United States each year. Of those children that are reported missing, about 20 percent are not found alive. We cannot sit idly by and let our children continue to be taken from their families and stripped of their freedom.

The luncheon includes talk by Barker, silent auction and luncheon.  Barker joined The New York Times as the metro reporter, specializing in investigative reporting.

Before joining The Times, she was the South Asia bureau chief for The Chicago Tribune, where she was based in New Delhi and Islamabad. Her book “The Taliban Shuffle”, a dark comedic take on her time in South Asia, was adapted into the movie “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” starring Tina Fey.

Barker has received awards including the front page award for journalist of the year, Newswomen’s Club of NY 2015 and is a lifetime member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

The Boynton Beach Kiwanis Club will stage its winter Cars, Trucks, and Motorcycles Fundraiser Show presenting hundreds of antique, customs, hot rods, bikes and trucks combined with craft vendors and samplings of 10 craft brews at Boynton Beach Mall, Palm Beach County’s one-stop family shopping, dining and entertainment destination. Sales of the craft beers will directly benefit the nonprofit educational and community assistance programs provided by the Boynton Beach Kiwanis Club.

The event will also feature a DJ, Food Trucks and more.

The nonprofit all-volunteer Boynton Beach Kiwanis Club, which will turn 70 in March, is comprised of professional men and women who are dedicated to improving the lives of disadvantaged children in Boynton Beach through a wide variety of community service projects.

The organization supports Boynton Beach schools at every level, including elementary (K-Kids), middle (Builders Club) and high school (Key Club). The Club also supports the annual ‘Shop with a Cop’ program with the Boynton Beach Police Department, the Fishing Tournament with the Boynton Beach Fire Department and has awarded more than $200,000 in college scholarships over the years. Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade is celebrating a great milestone this March: It is hosting its 50th Annual Golf Classic in Memory of “Bebe” Rebozo on Monday, March 13. Participants will engage in an enjoyable golf experience, in addition to raising funds for the Clubs’ youth development programs, which are based on fostering skills in computers, education, cultural arts homework, educational assistance, and social life competencies, as well as sports and recreation.

The daylong tournament will begin with a putting contest at 11 a.m. The shotgun start immediately follows at noon. Prior to the shotgun start, Stretch Zone will be available to assist players warm up. All golfers will receive a commemorative golf shirt, umbrella, bag, towel, balls, picture, complimentary parking, green fees, cart, range balls, lunch provided by McDonalds, on-site snacks provided by Hooters, and dinner at the awards banquet and ceremony. Professional Long Driver Bobby Bradley from Charity Golf International will be on-site to raise additional funds for the organization. Golfers are encouraged to take part in activities and games throughout the day.

Immediately following the tournament, the day will conclude with an awards banquet and ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Guests will be entertained by the Miami Heat Dancers followed by a delectable buffet-style dinner, cocktails, a raffle and silent auction featuring prizes such as vacation stays and sports memorabilia. Margaux Renee Grossman never complained, even during the most painful stages of her deadly battle with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare bone cancer that strikes mostly children. Her courage, positive attitude and kindness left a lasting impression on her friends and family, who formed “Margaux’s Miracle Foundation” one month after her death at the age of 15. Margaux’s Miracle is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that lives on in her name, dedicated to preserving her spirit through acts of service to the community and raising funds for cancer research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

MMF’s Woman of the Year Gloria Steinem, feminist activist and author of “My Life on the Road,” will present at the event as the keynote speaker held at Jungle Island on Wednesday, March 15, 2017. The National Hotel, Collins Avenue’s elegant and cinematic Art Deco hotel, is hosting a Joy/Toy Drive, on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 benefiting The Children’s Home Society of Florida. Guests will have the option of donating an unwrapped toy or purchasing the gift of Joy on location. Gift of Joy donations are used to purchase tickets for South Florida families to experience local, family-friendly attractions such as the Miami Children’s Museum, Zoo Miami and Parrot Jungle among others.
Each donation will provide guests with a complimentary drink at the hotel’s Blues Bar and live entertainment by the talented team at LIVE! at the National.
Participation is encouraged but necessary. Guests can drop off their donated toy(s) at valet or enter to submit their donation toward the purchase of a Joy.

The Friends of the Miami-Dade Public Library (Friendsofmdpl.org) will host the 25th Anniversary Annual Book Sale Dec. 14 through 17 at the main branch of the Miami-Dade Public Library System, 101 W. Flagler St., in downtown Miami.

The proceeds from the four-day sale, which run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., will benefit the Miami-Dade Public Library System. Friends, a nonprofit run by volunteers, will sell thousands of books, DVDs and CDs that were donated over the past year.

Book prices are $1 for paperbacks and $3 for hardcover books, with specialty books, DVDs and CDs priced separately.

“Our goal is support the library system and ensure its growth, and to get more books in the hands of people in our community,” said Lynn Summers, chair of the Friends organization.

Building CommUnity Party will Celebrate Growth of Supportive Space for Local Nonprofits!

Community residents along with local leaders across greater Miami are invited to come together for a celebratory evening at the Center for Social Change. The party is taking place on the brand new 5th floor, which is part of our Center’s expansion that has more than doubled the original co-working and event space capacity for South Florida nonprofits and social entrepreneurs. While Building CommUnity is technically free to attend, we are also fundraising for the development of a 1,500 sq. ft. outdoor patio with gorgeous, expansive views of surrounding neighborhoods. This 5th floor patio will provide a new venue for various community events, and if funds are raised in time, the goal is to open it Spring 2017. There’s a suggested “CommUnity Builder” donation of $25.00, and we’ll be engraving donor names on the patio’s railing when it’s completed.

About the Center for Social Change – Founded in Summer 2014, we house one of South Florida’s first coworking spaces and community environment for mission-driven leaders and organizations including nonprofits and social entrepreneurs. Help Raise Funds for Hurricane Matthew Relief
Local businesses come together to organize a bake sale where all funds will go to help the women and girls of Haiti

This year South Florida residents were very lucky that Hurricane Matthew missed them. After seeing the devastation in Haiti, Daniella Biffi, Managing Director and Founder of Pollen Theory- a local PR firm, decided to bring together local businesses and members of the community to donate their products and services to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Matthew at a local bake sale.

Every last penny donated will go to Heart to Heart International, who’s PowrServ program helps women and girls by donating ”Women’s Hygiene Kits.” This organization is recognized for its dedication to strengthening communities by improving health access, humanitarian development and administering crisis relief worldwide. This charity ranks amongst the highest on the Charity Navigator website.

Bake Sale Information:

Why: Women and girls are particularly vulnerable in the developing world when there’s a crisis situation like a natural disaster. We wanted to focus our efforts in helping them deal with Hurricane Matthew’s devastation with dignity.

What: All proceeds will go to the PowrServ program, who puts together the women hygiene kits. Each kit includes: 2 pairs of underwear, 2 reusable menstrual pads, washbowl, 2 bars of soap, 4 condoms, a whistle, crank flashlight, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, Band-Aids, hand towel, wash cloth, nail clippers and the following educational materials: Menstrual Health, Stay Safe Use a Condom, Pad Use/Care, Stay Healthy Wash Your Hands.

The kits cost $20 each and are invaluable to these girls. Our goal is to raise enough money to provide 100 kits to the women and girls of Haiti.

For 15 years, Arts for Learning, a Miami-based nonprofit advancing teaching and learning through the arts, has reached more than 117,000 underserved children and youth. Gulliver Academy is set to host its 7th Annual Make-a-Splash Event on Saturday, September 24, where sponsored student swimmers, ages 5 and up will attempt to swim 72 continuous laps, a mile. Each participant must be able to swim at least a 25-yard lap (one lap) on his or her own.

Make-a-Splash’s purpose is to raise awareness of Gulliver Schools and its programs. Proceeds from the event will support the Gulliver Annual Fund, benefitting the school’s Performing and Visual Arts programs as well as the Gulliver Athletic Fund. A portion of the funds will be donated to The Woody Foundation, which raises funds for the recovery of people with spinal chord injuries. Last year’s event raised more than $40,000 through the support of 170 participants.

In addition to the 72-lap swim challenge, Make-a-Splash activities will include a pool float relay, a tie-dye station, a dunk tank and bubble soccer. The event will also feature a covered tent area where students, parents, alumni, faculty and staff can visit booths from local restaurants and business and enjoy delicious treats and giveaways.

DADE MEN is a series of photo exhibitions highlighting prominent and enlightened Miami men. The exhibition was launched on October 1st, 2015 in order to raise awareness on gender-based violence, elevate the collaboration of local communities in this pervasive issues, and make Miami safer for women and girls.

Miami DADE has the highest rate of domestic violence in all of Florida. According to the Miami Herald, there were 25,000 reported cases of domestic violence reported in the county in the past five years.

Through this exhibit in addition to related workshops and events, we at the Millennials Project want to mobilize 25,000 men in the next years as supporters and allies in what we consider the most important social movement of our generation: the movement to end all forms of violence against women.

The Heart in Hand Awards is a unique event that will honor five outstanding women in our community while raising funds for No More Tears, a non-profit organization that aids victims of domestic violence and human trafficking (http://nomoretearsusa.org/).

Switchboard of Miami, Inc. is a private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that counsels, connects and empowers people in need. With more than 15 specialty phone lines, Switchboard offers free and confidential telephone counseling, crisis intervention, suicide prevention and information and referral services to every caller, chatter or texter 24/7. The organization also maintains a comprehensive and reliable social services databases of 5,000+ entries, and provides immediate tri-lingual assistance for an estimated 140,000 individuals annually. Last year alone, Switchboard provided more than 150,000 referrals to callers and is one of the largest organizations of its kind in the country. Switchboard also offers other programs, including suicide prevention, counseling, senior services, child developmental screenings and youth prevention programs, which collectively provided services to more than 5,000 individuals last year.

After Winnie Pritchett’s oldest son, Wesley, a WestPoint 08′ graduate who flies Kiowa Helicopters was deployed to Jalalabad, Afghanistan she learned that many of our deployed warriors serve in remote regions and have very limited access to TV, internet, cell phones, and no way to carry heavy books or computers in their 110-lb rucksacks. It became obvious to her that the typical care package of candy and magazines wasn’t enough. They needed something that allowed them to speak with their families back home, apps that could help them cope with strenuous situations, the ability to share photos with loved ones, watch movies, listen to music, read books, and even learn new skills and stay up to date on their training… what they really need is an iPad.

You don’t need to get a par-fect hole in one to win this game! Housing Opportunities, Mortgage Assistance, & Effective Neighborhood Solutions, Inc. (H.O.M.E.S.) a non-profit organization, is hosting a golf tournament at Fort Lauderdale Country Club on Friday, September 30th, 2016. The event will raise funds for at-risk Broward residents and neighborhoods, and continue providing effective housing solutions. H.O.M.E.S. revitalizes houses and communities so that they are affordable for low-income buyers. In addition, they also provide homebuyer education and financial counseling to create long-term positive change for Broward County.

“By participating in the H.O.M.E.S. golf tournament, we have an opportunity to both enjoy a game of golf and help give back to the Broward community,” said Juan Rojas, H.O.M.E.S. Board of Directors’ Treasurer, Vice President, Director of Community Development/CRA of Gibraltar Private Bank & Trust.

Sponsorship and volunteer opportunities are still available for the golf tournament. Registration and breakfast begin at 7:30 a.m. and the shotgun start is at 9:00 a.m. Cocktails, lunch, a live auction and raffle, and a program will follow the tournament.
