Two Miami icons team up to take you on a culinary world-tour on New Year’s Eve.

Pitbull embodies the Miami vibe: hip, cool and the ultimate entertainer. There is no one better to host a New Year’s Eve party than Mr. Worldwide himself. And when he thought to turn this party into a culinary affair, he only needed to look at the top of Miami’s Who’s Who. At the top of that list is none other than James Beard Award-winning chef, Michelle Bernstein.

The party will take place smack in the middle of all the celebration at Bayfront Park in downtown Miami. But this isn’t a party for the masses. This private event is a limited ticket event. So while 150,000 people party outside, patrons will be enjoying the VIP treatment within Worldwide NYE. The ticket includes everything: food, wine, spirits and a champagne toast at midnight.

There will be 15 to 20 food stations. Each station will have a signature dish created by Chef Bernstein. The spirit of this event is truly a “worldwide” experience. Each dish will focus on a different region of the world. In addition to the culinary delights, there are several signature cocktails to enjoy plus perfectly paired wine and craft beer. These signature cocktails are masterfully created by award-winning mixologist Julio Cabrera. Julio earned the title of Bartender of the Year and also named “America’s Most Imaginative Bartender” by GQ Magazine where he also graced the cover. Enjoy all the creations while taking in the Fox broadcast “Pitbull’s New Year’s Revolution” live from the private party.

Please note this is a 21+ event. Questions: Email us or check the website for more details.

January’s book discussion group features the memoir of artist Samson Kambalu, whose exhibition, Nyau Cinema, is currently on view at NSU Art Museum. Recently named one of Europe’s 50 most exciting artists, in this compelling and often hilarious memoir, Samson Kambalu introduces us to the country of his birth, Malawi, and to his father, the “Jive Talker.” In this utterly original, often hilarious book, Kambalu paints a portrait of an impoverished nation where no dissent is tolerated, but also a country where a little boy obsessed with Michael Jackson, Footloose, Nietzsche & soccer can evolve into one of the most promising conceptual artists in the international art scene.

Photographs by Anthony Jordon of Art Africa on December 4, 2016

The future is a site that does not exist yet, but one to be configured in a mental space. For the 2016 Annual Art Africa Miami, Afrotopia is a prospective thought. Thus, this 6th edition strives in the present-time to make it happen. Afrotopia is the atopos of the African Diaspora: that place not yet inhabited by a Diaspora to come. It is about investing in it through thought and imagination. The sequences that structure the temporality of African Diaspora societies is the future on which we can fully act upon, by conceiving and giving it a body. There is no historical fatality to which African Diaspora societies would be submitted to, as far as they conceive their future, have a vision of it and act in the present-time to transform our reality.

AFROTOPIA is a site in which, forms of upcoming articulations; individual and collective are drawn and configured.

The arts are the first site where the existential of the contemporary diasporic African is perhaps the best expressed — its collective being and singular experience of individual destiny, but also its dreams and projections. The end of a “world” that segregation and colonialism constituted were grasped by writers such as James Baldwin and Chinua Achebe. The failures and disillusions of integration in the African Diaspora and independence on the continent and in the Caribbean, the quartering and ambiguity of consciousness torn between cultures, the shadows of the Police killing and clarity of Black Lives Matter; as well as the poetry of the real grasped through hip hop; these constitute existential challenges AFROTOPIA addresses.

The artists assembled in this 6th edition the various programs in the 2016 edition engage more intimate and personal questions, more existential ones: the quest for self, hybridity, individuality and interior freedom. Some want to oppose them to the previous generation which would have better expressed the vox populis and the soul of its community. It happens that independently from the option chosen by the ones or the others, whether political, social or intimate, their works have all expressed the individual and collective experiences of the African Diaspora; it is a question of decorum and perspective.  The most personal questions still have the social context as background and, inversely, the social problematics have testified to the interior individual tensions. Some of the works presented in this 6th edition perfectly succeed at that setting in abyss of individual destinies, on a background of political and social history. They explore the manner in which to inhabit a plurality of worlds and to navigate between their banks; to unveil the shadow of the days to come and fixate the imaginary spaces in a hard and poetic aesthetic.

AFROTOPIA thinks the African Diaspora as site in which to erect our humanity with its shadows and lights but also interrogating new identity constructions on a background of memory, forgetting and reminiscences.

This 2016 Art Africa which poses an acute gaze on contemporary African Diaspora has something to say about the Diaspora in becoming and the world as we would want to see it. The combination of visual arts, fashion and style in the 2016 Art Africa then becomes spaces where the genius in creativity of forms by African Diaspora and their aptitudes to synthesis, recycling and remodeling express themselves in all their splendor.

AFROTOPIA is then that space of the possible that is yet to be realized but which nothing insurmountable impeaches the advent. The 2016 Art Africa will show that there is a continuity between the real and the possible; we only have to find where the latter hides; to think and work for the conditions of its materialization by lifting the obstacles; the limits are always mental.

Photographs of INK Art Fair 12/3/16

The small, but interesting INK Art Fair is one of our favorites! It features works on paper, prints and work that you will not see anywhere else. For example, one item we saw was a drawing of a capitol building from 1739. The oldest items we saw was from the 13th century. And they have work all the way up to today. It is a wonderful quiet respite from the noisy mayhem of many of the shows.

Miami, Fl.- Snowflakes, sugarplums, naughty little boys, and magical dolls! The charm of the Holidays fascinates all audiences, as Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida presents the classic ballet “The Nutcracker” to Tchaikovsky’s popular score based on the tale of Ernest Hoffman. The critically acclaimed unique production, choreographed and directed by Ballet Master Vladimir Issaev preserves the Russian tradition and serves as an alternative to those who already have seen Balanchine’s version.

This professional ballet company features already renowned dancers in the principal roles such as Mary Carmen Catoya, Daniel Sarabia, Lillian Hill, Hinano Eto and Kazuya Arima, along rising stars Janis Liu, Zihan Min, and Kevin Zong. The engaging choreography – from the fun of the party scene – to the harrowing battle scene- to the enchanting kingdom of the sweets – is guaranteed to entertain any age. Not only it is the most popular ballet enjoyed by all audiences around the world during this time of the year but it also serves as an introduction to ballet for the very young audiences.

The opening performance will take place on December 9 at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center running Saturday, December 10 and Sunday December 11 to then move to Parker Playhouse with a Nutcracker Gala on Friday, December 16th, offering a unique way to experience the magic of ballet while supporting the Company’s programs. People will enjoy a selection of wine and hors d’oeuvres, and the chance to bid on silent auction items that range from donations from weekend getaways, fine jewelry, and art pieces, followed by the performance. Two more performances follow on December 17 & 18 to close the Nutcracker season for the enjoyment of the entire family.

Don’t miss the opportunity to share the excitement and charm of the great tradition of the holidays with Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida during their extraordinary performances of “The Nutcracker.”

NYC based arts organization Art for Progress (AFP) teams up with local Miami artists to celebrate the link between Cuban and South Florida culture for Art Basel 2016. The events will take place in South Beach with an art exhibit opening on Friday evening and a rooftop- fashion, music and performance art event titled, “Cosa Rica” is set for Saturday night.
The art exhibition, “P.U.E.N.T.E.” which opens Friday evening (6:00pm – 9:00pm) December 2nd, will feature eleven artists (Nestor Arenas, Willie Avedano, Orestes De La Paz, Michael Gray, Catalina Jaramillo, Brandy Lynn, Guido Mena, Natasha Perdomo, Rafael Ramos, Cristina Victor) working in various mediums (paintings, sculpture, installation, textile and drawings).

After many decades of frosty relations between the U.S. and Cuba, the recent positive developments have brought a feeling of excitement and hope to the Cuban people of both South Florida and Cuba. The exhibition observes the relationship of the artist to their environment- changing landscapes and ability to adapt-retreat, refuge and escape. The show which will run through Sunday, December 5th and is curated by Belaxis Buil whose work has been exhibited in “Intersectionality” and “Taz” at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami, Art Shanghai, China, Tacheles Museum, Germany and Art Basel Miami.

On Saturday, December 3rd, AFP will host a night of fashion, performance art, dance theater and music overlooking Miami Beach. A site~specific fashion show featuring Belaxis Buil designs (contemporary Cuban inspired, ready to wear) will highlight the evening, but Cosa Rica will also feature provocative performance art, video and sound installations from Willie Avedano, Dino Felipe and Orestes De La Paz and a dance theater performance by Hellektrick Danse Theatre. The music for the evening will be curated by NYC based DJ/Producer Gatto. This special night is a celebration of identity- revival and reinvention of the Cuban- Cuban American identity. The event is 8pm-12am, rooftop at 1052 Ocean Drive Miami Beach.
For more information about the artists visit: www.artforprogress.org

Building CommUnity Party will Celebrate Growth of Supportive Space for Local Nonprofits!

Community residents along with local leaders across greater Miami are invited to come together for a celebratory evening at the Center for Social Change. The party is taking place on the brand new 5th floor, which is part of our Center’s expansion that has more than doubled the original co-working and event space capacity for South Florida nonprofits and social entrepreneurs. While Building CommUnity is technically free to attend, we are also fundraising for the development of a 1,500 sq. ft. outdoor patio with gorgeous, expansive views of surrounding neighborhoods. This 5th floor patio will provide a new venue for various community events, and if funds are raised in time, the goal is to open it Spring 2017. There’s a suggested “CommUnity Builder” donation of $25.00, and we’ll be engraving donor names on the patio’s railing when it’s completed.

About the Center for Social Change – Founded in Summer 2014, we house one of South Florida’s first coworking spaces and community environment for mission-driven leaders and organizations including nonprofits and social entrepreneurs. With affordable workspace options, meeting spaces, and access to events and educational opportunities, we provide a community of support in which to work, connect, innovate, and learn.

Photographs by Anthony Jordon of The 5th Annual Art of Transformation Series on November 10, 2016

The 5th Annual Art of Transformation Series (AOT), which included an exhibition and related programming presented by the Opa-locka Community Development Corporation, was a celebration of Opa-locka’s revitalization through the arts.

Curated by Tumelo Mosaka, the 5th Annual Art of Transformation Series was themed “SAY IT LOUD!” and featured an exhibition of work by prominent contemporary artists Michael Paul Britto, Myra Greene, Joshua R. McFadden, Mario Pfeifer and Roberto Visani, and films by Bhawin Suchak & Ira McKinley and Stanley Nelson. “SAY IT LOUD!” is inspired by the James Brown song of the same name that addresses racial discrimination and calls for black empowerment. The call in this context is a rallying cry for all to mobilize against injustice and discrimination, as well as embrace black culture pride in the United States and African Diaspora. The artists explored a range of experiences that not only address the re-imagination and representation of blackness, but also examined the fear, trauma, and grief transpiring in black communities.

Andy Sweet, a native son of Miami Beach, spent years photographing the life and residents of South Beach. His work was cut short when he was murdered in 1982, but he left behind an amazing, insightful body of luminous color photographs that still shine today.

Before Art Basel recognized Miami Beach as a burgeoning arts community, Andy recognized its importance, beauty, and the fleeting nature of that era. His work is now being rediscovered by a new generation and will be on display as part of Ed Christin Collection (Booth # PH04) at Pinta Miami in Wynwood as part of Art Basel, November 30-December 4.

Andy’s showing at Pinta Miami, includes some of Andy’s original prints, as well as some of the recently-printed restorations. A VIP Private Event will be held on Wednesday, November 30, 6- 8 .m. Invitation is valid for two. RSVP to VIP@pintamiami.com

This is the first time Andy’s work will be featured in Art Basel. This exhibition comes in the wake of his exhibition at the Miami Beach Cinematheque, which ran from September to November 2016. His tragic death and the following trials were covered extensively in the media. The son of a prominent Miami Beach family, the gruesome nature of his death diverted attention from his art just when his work was gaining a following.

By mischance, his negatives were lost, leaving only the prints he’d made as his legacy, their colors slowly fading away. In 2006, on finding a trove of color ‘work prints’ Andy made prior to printing full-size prints, Stan Hughes realized that digital technology could be used to restore the fading colors back to their original jewel-like glory.

Exhibition Dates: Thursday, December 1, noon to 8 p.m.; Friday, December 2, noon to 8 pm.; Saturday, December 3, noon to 8 p.m.; Sunday, December 4, noon to 7 p.m. http://www.pintamiami.com. Ed Christin Collection (Andy Sweet’s photography archivist).

Spinello Projects is pleased to present Transitions #3, the Miami debut solo exhibition by New York-based artist Naama Tsabar, running concurrently with Art Basel Miami Beach 2016. Tsabar will present an installation comprised of three evolving bodies of work which examine human sociality and behaviour through the relation of body and space and the underlying role of intimacy and performativity. The locals only preview will take place Wednesday, November 23rd, 7-10pm. A special collaborative performance will take place during the Miami Art Week Vernissage on Friday, December 2nd, at 9:30pm, featuring Tsabar along with four Miami based musicians and New York based sound/performance artist Fielded.

Continuing her ongoing Work On Felt sculptures, Tsabar transfers these works from the floor to the wall with four new variations. These felt works, likened to Post Minimalist art historic works as Joseph Beuys’s felt sculptures or Robert Morris’s cut-felt wall pieces, subverts its expectations: the material is no longer the represser of sound, but the resonating chamber itself. The audience is invited to breach the borders between one’s own body and the artwork; plucking the string, extending or shortening the curvature of the work, emits a sound while provoking an intimate experience between the object and its catalyst.

Transition is a series of canvases in which Tsabar has reconstructed guitar amplifiers and stage monitors by inverting them, reinserting and abstracting their elements as visual components on linen. Colored hook up wires and knobs are threaded and punctured in and out of the fabric, creating new aesthetic compositions. When connected to power, each canvas retains its functional role with a set sound and volume levels. Within the exhibition, Tsabar will also present Barricade #3, a work composed of twelve microphones arranged in a triangle formation, each side’s output fed directly through a Transition canvas. The microphones cables line the floor in formal composition, reflecting the path of transmitted sound. The spatial arrangement of the microphone stands act as both barrier and enabler as the performative space is compressed both physically and sonically. Performer and performance are contained inside the borders of the square. Upon activation, sound is transmitted out to the separate Transition works on the gallery walls, then projected back to the center of the space, filling the acoustic environment with resonant frequencies.

A single Transition work will stay unconnected to any sound transmitting device. The dual existence of these sound sculptures is essential to their understanding, as the canvases constantly move from one field of reading to the other. They are visually surreal as they hold a potential for sound and continuously shift, maintaining a constant state of transition.

Naama Tsabar (b. 1982, Israel). She received her MFA from Columbia University in 2010. Solo exhibitions of her work have been held at venues in New York, Tel Aviv, Basel, Guadalajara and Milan. Tsabar’s solo project ‘Encore’ was presented at Art Statements during Art Basel 38th in Basel, Switzerland. Solo exhibitions of Tsabar have been presented at Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, NY (2014); Tel Aviv Art Museum (2013); The Herziliya Museum for Contemporary Art, Israel (2006); MARTE-C, El Salvador (2014), Páramo, Guadalajara (2016); Thierry Goldberg Gallery, NY (2014); Dvir Gallery, Israel (2016); and Pianissimo Gallery, Milan (2008).

Selected group exhibitions featuring Tsabar’s work include TM Triennale, Hasselt Genk, Belgium, curated by Tim Goossens (2016); ‘Greater New York’, curated by Klaus Biesenbach, Connie Butler and Neville Wakefield at MoMA PS1 (2010); The Bucharest Biennale for Young Artists, curated by Ami Barak, Romania (2008); Hessel Museum of Art at CCS Bard, New York (2015); Casino Luxembourg, Luxembourg (2008); ExtraCity in Antwerp, Belgium (2011); and ‘Sweat’ at Columbia University and the Fisher Landau Center, New York (2010). Tsabar is a two-time recipient of an Artist Grant (2014 and 2010), a two-time recipient of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation Grant (2009 and 2005), the 2009-2010 recipient of the Joan Sovern Award from Columbia University, 2012 Grantee of The Rema Hort Mann Foundation Award, and held residency in 2012 at The Fountainhead Residency in Miami.

Tsabar’s work has been featured in publications including ArtForum, ArtReview, ARTnews, The New York Times, New York Magazine, Frieze, ArtAsia Pacific, Wire, and Whitewall. Among others her work is held in the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Jiménez-Colón, Tel Aviv Museum, Israel Museum, and Colección Diéresis. Masters of Sound Artists

6:00 Pm / Byrdipop, Miami, FL
I’m in a love/hate relationship with music. I’m pro hi-hat control and anti “loudness”.

7:30 Pm / True Vine, Miami, FL
True Vine is a Miami-based Christian DJ project inspired by the New Testament. He shares a divine vision of music that pulls from ancient Hebrew influences with an apocalyptic, biblical, and prophetic sound.

9:00 Pm / Helado Negro, Brooklyn, NY
Brooklyn-based producer-singer Roberto Lange has earned a wealth of recent acclaim for Private Energy, his fifth album as Helado Negro, including glowing reviews from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, NPR and more. He began producing in the 2000s under the alias Epstein, collaborating with fellow electronic visionaries Prefuse 73, Julianna Barwick and Sinkane. Existentially occupying the ether between Ecuadorian and American identity, Lange solidifies his ethnic pride and his experimental legacy on Private Energy, tinkering with South American folk and electro-pop palettes. He’s also gotten ample attention (and sometimes befuddlement) from summer festival-goers thanks to his shaggy, glittering “Tinsel Mammals” dance crew. Designed with the help of his wife, artist Kristi Sword, his on-stage assistants look like Cousin Itt hitting the glitter. – Rolling Stone

10:30 Pm / Jacques Renault, Brooklyn, NY
Jacques is a DJ and producer from the Washington, D.C. area who lives and works in Brooklyn. He runs Let’s Play House, a raving house, disco, and techno party as well as an imprint of the same persuasion, with friend and partner, Nik Mercer. He owns three plants, a rotary mixer, thousands of records, and a similar number of T-shirts. Despite working within the confines of a different genre, Dischord Records is still probably his favorite label.

Miami Beach Cinematheque
1130 Washington Ave
Miami Beach, Florida 33139

Miami Beach Cinematheque is proud to present Robert Adanto’s documentary The F Word, in association with Fourth Wave Feminist: The Photographic Works of Leah Schrager, this year’s Art Basel exhibition, curated by Robert Adanto. The reception for this exhibition, takes place Wednesday, November 30 at 5:30pm, and will be followed by a 6:30pm screening of The F Word.

The F Word explores radical “4th wave” feminist performance through interviews with a new generation of feminist artists who use their bodies as subject matter. Because the female body continues to be politicized and policed, and because these artists delve into the fecund territory of female sexuality, self-objectification, and the female form as a site of resistance, many remain marginalized by the mainstream art world. Brooklyn-based Leah Schrager, well known for her performance practice, Naked Therapy, states, “As soon as you introduce a bit of sexiness or sexuality into an artwork it suddenly becomes questionable. Just because something elicits arousal or shows elements of sexiness does absolutely not make it not art.” While some 4th wave artists, like Ann Hirsch and Kate Durbin, choose to analyze representations of female identity through digital media, others, like the radical, queer, transnational feminist art collective, Go! Push Pops, explore sexuality and gender in pop culture in the digital age. As feminist lecturer Kristen Sollee explains, 4th wavers, unlike their predecessors, “are not afraid to be ‘girly’, (or) to be hyper-feminine, or to wear a mini-skirt, to self-objectify” in the service of challenging patriarchal oppression or sexist ideals.

Featured artists: Narcissister, Ann Hirsch, Go! Push Pops, Leah Schrager, Kate Durbin, Rebecca Goyette, Rachel Mason, Rafia Santana, Damali Abrams, Faith Holland, Claudia Bitran, Michelle Charles, and Sadaf

Adanto’s film was screened at Dallas Contemporary, in association with Black Sheep Feminism: The Art of Sexual Politics, an exhibition exploring the works of Joan Semmel, Anita Steckel, Betty Tompkins and Cosey Fanni Tutti, curated by Alison Gingeras, and as part of The Guerrilla Girls Twin City Takeover in Minneapolis at the Walker Art Center. In adddition, the documentary was screened in assoction with Cut-Up: Contemporary Collage and Cut-Up Histories through a Feminist Lens at Franklin Street Works, in Stamford, CT. The film was an Official Selection of the Fort Lauderdale International, The Art of Brooklyn, and Downtown Los Angeles Film Festivals, respectively, and has been presented at The Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow, UK; School of Visual Arts, New York, NY; Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Minneapolis, MN; Muhlenberg College, Allentown, PA; and Bowdoin College, Brunswick, ME. In the coming weeks, The F Word will be screened at the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at Arizona State University and the Institute for Research on Women & Gender at the University of Michigan.

Photographs by Bob Quesada of The 12th Annual Rotary Key Biscayne Wine and Food Fest

The 12th Annual Rotary Key Biscayne Wine and Food Fest was held this past Friday at Fairways on the Key.

Thirteen different wines from the New World competed against the same varietals from the Old World to earn the recognition of “Best of Show” in each class. A lovely Italian Prosecco greeted all the patrons upon their arrival in order to “season the palate” for the wonderful wines to follow.

Shari Gherman, president of the American Fine Wine Competition & Charity Wine Gala, served as wine director. Four other noted wine professionals, Patrick Sullivan, wine educator; Wendy Rosano, Sommelier and wine director at Terra Fiamma in Delray Beach; Roberto Colombi, Sommelier and GM of The Blue in the Boca Raton Resort, and Henry Barrow, Wine Educator, completed the professional Judging panel.

The evening’s proceeds went to benefit the Rotary Club of Key Biscayne Foundation (RCKBF) and affiliated charities for adults and children.

The Rotary Club continues to collaborate with the Arc of South Florida, a Miami-based non-profit helping adults and children with mental disabilities.  Their members organized the details of the evening and received part of the proceeds to fund its programming.

Additionally, the Rotary Club of Key Biscayne Foundation has designated proceeds to benefit Fundacion Manos del Sur’s educational work with programs to promote healthcare and disease prevention offered through Fundación Stamboulian and the Rotary Club in Argentina.

Rather than each organization holding an independent fund raising event, The Arc of South Florida and Fundación Manos Del Sur worked together with Rotary to offer attendees not only a wonderful evening, but an opportunity to support different efforts in our community. The Rotary Club is pursuing matching grants from the local Rotary District and Rotary International to further leverage the charitable impact of this event.

And the winners of the “Best of Show” title are:

In the Red Category: “Unmask” a red blend from Vineyard 36, Napa

In the White Category: “Champagne Laculle” Blanc de Noir, France.

Saludarte Foundation And Mana Contemporary Present Viola Meets Mozart

Saludarte Foundation And Mana Contemporary Present Viola Meets Mozart
November 29th
MANA Wynwood
318 NW 23rd St
Miami, FL 33127

World-renowned artists Bill Viola and famous violinist Julian Rachlin come together in one of the year’s most significant performances of Miami Art Week. Viola Meets Mozart is the result of the collaboration of the SaludArte Foundation and MANA Contemporary.

Arguably the most important contemporary video artists of our time, Bill Viola’s work focuses on fundamental human experiences such as birth, death and the different aspects of consciousness. Viola Meets Mozart will feature Inverted Birth, a piece where Viola depicts five stages of awakening through a series of violent transformation and is accompanied by critically acclaimed violinist Julian Rachlin, who together with the PhilarMIA Orchestra will play movements I, II and III of Mozart’s 5th Violin Concerto. Spanish dancer Jesus Pastor will be performing an original choreography in this piece. All this will be performed under the artistic direction of Pablo Mielgo.

Viola Meets Mozart brings together a group of leading artists of different disciplines. Bill Viola is internationally recognized as one of today’s leading artists and is credited as instrumental in the establishment of video as a vital form of contemporary art, helping in the expansion of its scope in terms of technology, content and historical reach. Over the last 27 years, Julian Rachlin has been captivating audiences around the world and it is now considered one of the most exciting and respected musicians around the world. He has collaborated on many animations and with artists such as John Malkovich. Jesus Pastor, the founder of the “Human Dance Project,” is a classically trained dancer with a long-standing career that has taken him around the world. The artistic direction of the piece fell under Pablo Mielgo, who is not only the artistic and music director of the SaludArte Foundation but also the music director and co-artistic director of the Baleares Symphony Orchestra and the Medellin Philharmonic Academy.
“I am honored to be part of this amazing project and also thankful for the opportunity of working alongside Bill Viola, Jesus Pastor, the PhilarMia Orchestra and, of course, Pablo Mielgo. This is an exciting event taking place at an exciting time: the most important art fair in the hemisphere,” explained Julian Rachlin.

Viola Meets Mozart will be part of the MANA Wynwood’s space offerings during Miami Art Week. Additionally, in the space will be The Global South Visions and Revisions, Selections of the Brillembourg Capriles Collection, an exhibit curated by Adriana Herrar and Adolfo Wilson that proposes different revisions of the continent’s geometric abstraction. This exhibit is also a collaboration between the SaludArte Foundation and MANA Contemporary. PINTA Miami also returns to MANA Wynwood and celebrates its 10th year anniversary by expanding the project to include galleries from around the globe while maintaining a conceptual dialogue across all cultures, connecting Latin America to the rest of the world.

MANA Contemporary is one of the United States’ largest and most innovative contemporary art organizations. Mana offers exceptional services, spaces, and programming through its integrated architectural design for the greater creative community. Originally built in 1890, its rapidly expanding flagship location in Jersey City will eventually contain a footprint of more than two million square feet.

“To be part of one of the world’s most important art scenarios, as is Miami Art Week, is for us a milestone that allows us to grow and continue spreading the word about our mission of facilitating inclusive artistic processes that promote positive social change and integration. Much like Inverted Birth depicts the life cycle from birth to death, we want to be part of an individual’s transformation when exposed to art,” said Tania Capriles Brillembourg, Founder and Director of SaludArte Foundation.
On November 29th, MANA Wynwood will kick off Miami Art Week with Viola Meets Mozart, followed by the opening of PINTA Miami, in tandem with the opening of The Global South, Visions and Revisions: Selections from The Brillembourg Capriles Collection. Danny Simmons, Jr., is an American abstract painter from Queens, NY, who once coined his particular style of painting as “neo- African Abstract Expressionism.” His talent and passion for the arts reaches beyond the canvas; He is a published author, poet, painter and art philanthropist. He has become a leader in the art world with his philanthropic ventures, artistic talents and creative mind and drive.

The New York Times, in reviewing one of his art exhibitions, stated that Simmons “injects freshness” into his abstracts, and that they are “meticulously rendered and decoratively impressive.” Today, his works appear in prominent locales around the globe, including: Brooklyn Academy of Music, Brooklyn Museum, Chase Manhattan Bank, Deutsche Bank, Schomburg Center for Black Culture, The Smithsonian, United Nations, and, on an international scope has shown work in France, Amsterdam and Ghana. In 2015, he served as a scholarly consultant for the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) in Washington, DC.

Simmons is co-founder, along with his siblings, music mogul Russell, and hip hop legend Joseph Simmons aka “Rev Run”, and president of the Rush Arts Gallery. He is also founder and VP of the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization “dedicated to providing disadvantaged urban youth with significant arts exposure and access to the arts.” He is a former board member of the Brooklyn Museum, the Brooklyn Public Library, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and the National Conference of Artists. His own works have been obtained by art lovers and renowned celebrities everywhere, including: music industry executive/producer Lyor Cohen, film director/producer Stan Lathan, musical producer Andre Harrell, actor Ron Perlman, renowned businessman Olivier Sarkozy, actress Annabella Sciorra, actor Will Smith, and many others.

Danny Simmons holds a Bachelor’s degree in social work from New York University, a Masters in public finance from Long Island University, and is the recipient of an honorary PhD from Long Island University. He continues to thrive at his ‘home gallery’ in Philadelphia, PA.

The theme for the fourth edition will explore the global impact of Africa’s cultural DNA and will showcase over 40 artists from eight countries including: France, Haiti, Jamaica, Nigeria, St. Martin, and Trinidad and Tobago, split between two sections curated by fair Director and Founder Mikhaile Solomon and interdisciplinary artist William Cordova.

Thursday December 1st – Prizm Perform
6:00 PM – 6:30 PM – Nyugen Smith, A Letter Home: Hoping to reach you soon, Part 2
This thirty-minute performance aims to bring together three generations of Haitians to tell a story of belonging, longing, achievement and their contributions to global culture. This story will be told through instrumentation and performative actions made by the artist and a small ensemble of Haitian residents of Miami. The ensemble will be made up of family and friends of the artist who live in Miami and are musicians in their church (Salvation Army) band. Smith dressed as a military general will lead the ensemble through a series of formations and dialog that bounces between English, French and Haitian Creole, punctuated by musical scores. As a Haitian descendant, Smith knows very little about the history, culture and legacy of the Haitian people and is using this project to learn about the aforementioned while bringing the ensemble together to share their knowledge and experience making together.

6:45 – 7:15 PM Ayana Evans, Gurl I’d Drink Your Bath Water
Evans delivers a layered performance that is part social commentary, part autobiographical. An interactive performance piece, “Gurl, I’ll Drink Your Bathwater,” a piece originally created in 2015 for Performance Anxiety in New York, NY. Within this project the act of washing represents various ideas. There are references to the religious use of water to cleanse the soul, the need for women to be “clean” in our society, beauty ideals in the US, and even a nostalgia for the Palmolive soap used in the piece because it is the same dish washing liquid used by the artist’s mother and grandmother. The title is based on the Black American old school saying, “You’re so fine, I’d drink your bathwater.” This phrase has been used as both an extreme compliment and as an all too familiar catcall for Black women. For the the iteration performed at Prizm, has a new ending has been added.

Friday December 2nd – Prizm Panels
12 PM – 12:45 PM Evolution of Black Artist Movements: Jamea Richmond-Edwards and AMber Robles-Gordon
Artists Jamea Richmond-Edwards and Amber Robles-Gordon, Co-Founders of Delusions of Grandeur artist collective will speak of the relevancy, evolution and power of artist collectives and artistic movements. Richmond-Edwards and Robles-Gordon, parlayed a series of conversations about personal experiences in the art world, the cultural influence and legacy of Howard University, and the examination of artist group and movements such as Spiral, Black Artists of DC, Africobfra and the Black Arts Movement to build a contemporary art cannon. Delusions of Grandeur is a collective of emerging artists brought together by a shared interest and commitment to their art, a need to provide critique and commentary on social infrastructures within American society and to contribute to the prominence of the collective black voice and presence within contemporary art. Delusions of Grandeur is comprised of artists Shaunte Gates, Jamea Richmond-Edwards, Amber Robles-Gordon, Stan Squirewell, Wesley Clarke and Larry Cook Jr.

1:00 – 1:45 PM Young Art Collectors presented by Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation
TBA

2:00 – 2:45 PM – Caribbean Canon: A Caribbean Art Education Initiative with Daniela Fifi, Stephanie Cunningham & Erin Hylton
The history of art in the Caribbean exists in its fragmented past, resulting in the rich and culturally diverse artistic practices present throughout the region. Despite the immense impact that Caribbean art forms have had on the economies and unique cultures of these islands, many of their artistic practices have been inadequately researched and documented. Furthermore, Caribbean art forms are oftentimes left out of the national discourse within education. This presentation aims to address the lacuna present within Caribbean art education through presenting an online platform that will provide information and resources to regional and global audiences.

3:00 – 3:45 PM – Oasa Duverney Presented by Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation
Duverney discusses her exhibition, The View From Nowhere, a showcase of social justice-driven large-scale drawings and mixed media works created to give a “visual voice” for those who continue to be silenced. Her work comes from her own lived experiences and observations, with themes ranging from criminalization of black and brown, bodies, gentrification, housing scarcity, and other pressing social justice issues facing women and people of color in New York City and the United States at-large.

4:00 – 4:45 Pm Black Femininity In Contemporary Art With Karen Senefuru
Karen Senefuru discusses The Black Woman is God exhibition, a multi-media visual and spiritual exhibition for audiences to recognize an alternative to Western cultural narratives that challenges Eurocentric notions of God. Through an examination of cosmology, womanhood, feminism, politics and psychology, The Black Woman is God challenges gaps and fragments in art history that position Black art as only ancient or contemporary, failing to honor the space in between.

Untitled, Miami Beach – Fifth anniversary 11/30/16 – 12/4/16

Untitled, Miami Beach
November 30 – December 4, 2016.
on the beach at Ocean Drive and 12th Street

Untitled, Art has announced its 2016 exhibitors list for the fifth edition of Untitled, Art, Miami Beach. The curated selection features 129 international galleries from 20 countries and 48 cities, with 37 new exhibitors including galleries from Iceland, Sardinia and South Africa, as well as a continuing strong presence of Latin American and European galleries. The 2016 edition of the fair will be the largest to date, with an expanded floorplan that will accommodate many exhibitors taking larger booths. Through its unique, curated, approach, Untitled, Art continues its strong commitment to presenting a selection of emerging, established and historical artists; providing visitors the opportunity to revisit and discover a diverse range of art works presented within an architecturally designed space.

Untitled, Art’s exhibitors are carefully selected by the curatorial team, consisting of Artistic Director, Omar López-Chahoud and co-curators Christophe Boutin and Melanie Scarciglia, who work closely with the galleries and their artists to produce a cohesive show that feels more like an exhibition than an art fair. The 2016 edition will offer visitors a compelling dialogue between new discoveries and influential historical artists; diverse presentations of technology-based works; and collaborations with a selection of prominent non-profit organizations.

The extensive list of participants taking part in Untitled, Miami Beach spans 20 countries including Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, France, Germany, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Panama, Peru, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the United States.
Several galleries will highlight historical works that explore conceptual practices, including New York-based gallery Nyehaus who will juxtapose the work of two pioneers of the “Light and Space” movement – Mathew Scheiber and Laddie John Dill. Also exploring this theme, Galeria Raphael Ortiz, based in Seville, will present a survey of renowned Spanish collective EQUIPO57, whose radical multi-disciplinary practice in the 1950’s and 1960’s explored the ideas of authorship and the influence of art on society. In addition to Noemí Escandell’s Dairio El Blanco (part of this year’s Special Projects) Henrique Faria Buenos Aries will also show conceptual works by a selection of Latin American artists from the 1960s and 1970s including Delia Cancela and Mirtha Dermisache. Works by a leading figure in the feminist art movement, Miriam Schapiro, can also be found at Eric Firestone Gallery (New York).

New exhibitors to Untitled, Miami Beach include Reykjavik-based gallery BERG Contemporary, which will present new and rarely seen works by pioneering video artists Steina and Woody Vasulka. Through important video and print work the presentation will cast a light on the couple’s extensive career and explorations of the malleability of the image, the manipulation of electronic energy and the interrelation of sound and image. Cape Town’s WHATIFTHEWORLD will make its first appearance at the fair, presenting a solo booth of works by South African artist Paul Edmunds. Magnin A, from Paris, will also make their debut with a selection of contemporary African artists.

Miami is recognized as the gateway to Latin America, and Untitled, Miami Beach continues to have a strong presence of this region at the fair. This year, highlights include presentations from Baró (São Paulo), Mite (Buenos Aires), CURRO (Guadalajara), DiabloRosso (Panama City), as well as Galleria Macca’s solo booth of works by Argentinian artist Diego Singh. Argentina in particular has increased its presence this year, with seven galleries and numerous artists represented at the fair.

Time-based and new-media arts will also be presented by a number of exhibitors at Untitled, Miami Beach, 2016. Of note are two exhibitors whose programs focus on artist utilizing film, video and new technologies; Aspect/Ratio with works by Alejandro Figueredo Díaz-Perera and Sabina Ott, while Microscope will be debuting new works by Zach Nader, Kevin Reuning and Eileen Maxson.

As part of its curatorial ethos, Untitled integrates not-for-profit and artist-run exhibition spaces into the overall layout, positioning artworks and artists in direct dialogue. This year’s non-profits exhibitors include the ICA Miami, Aperture Foundation, Exile Books, Brodsky Center at Rutgers University, Microscope and SiTE:LAB.

Please join us in welcoming Havana’s Balcony to the Magic City and be among the first to witness the lighting of this monumental piece

The Spanish artist Juan Garaizabal is ready for his installation of Havana’s Balcony (Balcón de la Habana) at the Museum Park in the city of Miami. The steel structure will be presented under the framework of Miami’s Art Week. The piece is the first part of an initiative that will be completed with the installation of a sister sculpture in the Malecón of Havana in 2017.

Havana’s Balcony (Balcón de La Habana) is a 69 feet high sculpture – approximately the height of a six-story building. It has an imposing structure of stainless steel, partially coated with LED lights, that will be visible from the bay and land throughout the city, changing what is now the skyline of Miami. It will be located in Museum Park, the neurological center of culture and art in Miami, along with the Pérez Art Museum and The Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science. The Havana’s Balcony (Balcón de la Habana) in Miami will have a replica installation of a sculpture in the Cuban capital, which recreates the Miami’s Art Deco lines in 2017. The two sister sculptures will be placed facing each other. Through this work, the artist tries to not only recreate the symbol of a culture, but also the essence that lingers in the minds of many Cubans based in Miami. The structure will be an icon of the city.

“I intend to work where history is being made. Miami and Havana, are both having transcendental changes,” explained the artist Juan Garaizabal. “The idea is to materialize the physical connection that already exists and is rooted in Miami. A structure so symbolic such as the balconies of Havana is the perfect representation of nostalgia that this Caribbean city evokes in the majority of the Miami population. ”

Miami’s most prominent personalities such as Jorge Perez, Ella Fontanals-Cisneros, through the CIFO foundation, The Bayfront Park Management Trust Miami, and Mana Contemporary, as well as the artist’s foundation, Urban Memories, are involved in the support of the project.

About Juan Garaizabal
Juan Garaizabal is an internationally recognized conceptual artist and sculptor. His “Urban Memories (Memorias Urbanas),” are massive structures that alongside with their particular strategic location and lighting, strategically evoking architectural historical elements, signifying the memory of the cities. Despite being an artist of conceptual origins, as a sculptor his work is done by hand, using his own techniques such as: forging, carpentry, electricity, plasticity and masonry.

Held at the “Waterfront Fair in the Round”, Concept Art Fair sits on a 32-acre Noguchi designed Bayfront Park on Biscayne Bay – the epicenter of Downtown Miami’s Arts, Museum and Entertainment District – bounded on the north by Perez Art Museum Miami and on the south by the city’s dynamic Brickell Financial District, home to over 1000 companies making up Miami’s global trading, banking, law, creative and tech industries. Over 45 participating galleries will be exhibiting internationally renowned modern and contemporary art.
Highlights of the fair include a rare view of the artworks by Pritzker-winning architect, Richard Meier who is currently completing a re-design of Miami Beach’s Shore Club. Collectors will have the first viewing of Meier’s collage installation which contains 224 major original works of art. Meier’s collages join the tradition of collages in modern art, alluding to Dadaist collages, and to their later interpretation by artists such as Robert Rauschenberg. The collages of Meier also resonate the decollagist legacy of European post-WWII artists such as Mimmo Rotella and Raymond Haines. Meier’s collage practice suggests an in-depth examination of his vision of constructed and deconstructed spatiality, offering a key to the work of a globally significant architect who is also a unique artist.
Art historian and author, Peter Hastings Falk will present the works of the large and innovative paintings of Gil Cuatrecasas [1935–2004], a brilliant but reclusive visionary colorist whose paintings had been buried for the last forty years — and nearly discarded. “The Cuatrecasas Discovery” is making its first appearance on the East Coast at Art Concept having made its debut earlier this year in Los Angeles where a feature article in the Los Angeles Times concluded that “No one has ever painted like this.” After attending Harvard and Yale he worked with Josef Albers. This solo exhibition is presented by redM, the online illustrated biographical encyclopedia of artists who have been rediscovered — or newly discovered — by founding Editor and Curator, Peter Hastings Falk, and his Art Advisory Board. Falk underscores the surprise that, for Cuatrecasas, the artist’s style, as well as his technique, are unique in the history of painting. “These paintings elicit a strong visceral reaction,” says Falk, “People linger in contemplation not only over the compelling imagery but over the inscrutable complexity of the technique and paint-handling. No one has fully figured out how he did them.” Fourteen paintings will be exhibited, with a few as long as 14-18 feet. Cuatrecasas’s particular form of action painting exemplifies how web-like configurations of color and surface become a free-floating energy in the world, suggesting an existential stance regarding the intersection of art and life.
Art Concept Fair revitalizes the notion of the Bayfront Park as an open space for the arts. “Reimagining Miami Public Spaces – Homage to Isamu Noguchi”, part of the Art Concept Fair program, is a special outdoor project in Bayfront Park by Miami Mountains Foundation and the City of Miami Public Art Initiative on the significance of art in public places to enhance urban communities and create new audiences. Produced in partnership and with the support of Miami-Dade County Cultural Affairs/Art in Public Places, Miami Beach Art in Public Places, Bayfront Park Management Trust, the Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Museum, American Institute of Architects, International Sculpture Center, The Miami Foundation, Next Level Fairs and private sponsors. The Biscayne entrance to the fair will be transformed into an outdoor sculpture exhibition through the duration of the fair. The project will stretch Noguchi’s notion interactive sculpture and will expand the scope of viewing participation from the purely experiential-sensual, to the social and historical.
Redesigned in the early 1980’s by Noguchi, the park’s 32 acres of lush greenery, its proximity to the water – which affords a spectacular view of the bay that can be enjoyed from the fair’s dining area – its central location close to ample parking and public transportation, and its proximity to Miami’s leading restaurants, luxury shopping, museums and five star hotels.
Art Concept’s 50,000 sq. ft. 4700 sq. meter column-free venue is enhanced with the translucent ceiling, waterfront dining, lecture pavilion, and outdoor sculpture garden drive from Miami making this the premiere art fair location for Art Basel Week visitors. A short 12 minutes Beach’s Convention Center the fair will offer easy direct access to satellite fairs and the city’s highlighted social events.
Next Level Fairs is the parent company for Art Concept, Art Palm Beach, and Art Boca Raton. Next Level Fairs curates sophisticated, event-driven fairs attracting global attendance, supported by an international marketing and branding strategy in coordination with local museums, collectors, and galleries. Organizers Lee Ann and David Lester, beginning in 1989 they have organized over 100 international fairs and were the original founders of Art Miami, Art Asia Hong Kong, Art Palm Beach, American International Fine Art Fair, and Art Boca Raton. They sold their fairs to major publicly traded companies Advance Star (New York) and Daily Mail Group DMG Media (London) and resumed ownership of Art Palm Beach in 2011.

AUTOPIA: Road Trips from the Cold War to the Present
Autopia explores the ubiquitous presence of the automobile in contemporary culture. “Autopia” combines the words auto and Utopia to highlight the importance that the car industry played as one of the paramount symbols of progress in the 20th Century. What is its place in contemporary culture? Does car culture remain central to our ideal of progress? In this exhibition, the legacy of automobiles is being reviewed and reassessed through the work of artists from three continents.
The exhibition is divided in four thematic groups, dealing with the central role of cars in the American High/Way of Life, the USA-USSR fight for consumers’ hearts and minds during the Cold War, the impact of automobiles in the natural realm, and the ways in which it has affected human lives, rewriting maps through commerce and migration, and changing urban centers like Miami.

AHOLSNIFFSGLUE and Werner Blumenthal
Inspired by the energy of Miami, AHOL JEWELRY is a brand of simplicity, geometry and obscurity; it is that obscureness that makes the abstract real. The iconic insignia of Miami’s favorite graffiti artist, AHOLSNIFFSGLUE, is the core of this 3D printed jewelry line.

AMLgMATD
AMLgMATD is a collaborative studio established by Laz Ojalde and Natalie Zlamalova in 2014, experimenting in works of art, design objects and environments that reflect quirky points of view and love of unusual and overlooked materials. The WEBSTR stool at PAMM Shop harkens back to the retro lawn chair look by utilizing vintage strapping in a contemporary way creating a look that is Miami at its core.

Dafné Alleno
It all began with the idea of creating elegant and edgy jewels easy to put on and remove. Combining lightness and refinement, each single piece is comfortable to wear, so light, such a “second skin” jewel. The elegant subtlety of Alleno’s jewelry can suit the minimalist look when worn individually and the maximalist look when ganged together.

Michelle Weinberg
Michelle Weinberg is a visual artist living and working in New York City and Miami. Her playful geometric patterns and aesthetic lends itself to design for the home that blurs the line between art and function.
