Mad Cat Theatre Company continues its 17th season with a production of two of Vaclav Havel’s sharp political dramas AUDIENCE and PROTEST.

The subversive Czechoslovakian playwright, Prime Minister & President, Vaclav Havel was in danger of being declared a “social parasite” by the neo-Stalinist regime of Gustav Husák when he wrote AUDIENCE & PROTEST back in 1975 & 1978.

AUDIENCE deals with the travails of Havel’s alter-ego Ferdinand Vanek – recently released from jail for anti-government activities. Valek is stuck in the bleak office of the foreman of the brewery where he has been forced into menial labour. The tedious bureaucracy and constant paranoia of life under the Communists have driven the foreman to alcoholism and to the brink of insanity – he is prone to bouts of rage and despair.

In PROTEST, Havel’s alter ego Ferdinand Valek has escaped his hellish office to visit the middle-class home of one of his friends. He is hoping to convince his old friend Stanek to sign a petition renouncing the regime.

Both plays seek to shine a light on the darkness of censorship and tyrannical rule. Don’t miss the show that critics and audiences are raving over!

Directed by Paul Tei and Theo Reyna
Featuring Erik Fabregat, Michael Gioia, Noah Levine, and Pete Smith Rogan

Vaclav Havel’s AUDIENCE and PROTEST is running now through March 12, 2017, with performances Thursday – Sunday 8 p.m. in MTC’s Sand Box located at 9816 NE 2nd Avenue, Miami Shores FL 33138. Tickets available NOW online at www.madcattheatre.org, www.mtcmiami.org and 305-751-9550 during MTC Box Office Hours.

To further champion the good food movement, a portion of all proceeds will go to Cochon555’s sister charity, Piggy Bank – a pig farming sanctuary.

Cochon555 is proud to announce the competing chefs for 2017 in Miami:

Chef Tito Vargas of The Bazaar by José Andrés – Modern Spanish with a Twist
Chef Paula DaSilva of Artisan Beach House – Bold New American Cooking

Video & live performance
Created by Natalia Lassalle

A powerful exploration of what it means to be a woman. To grow old, and to remember. This piece, which is part documentary video and part live performance, is a journey into the lives of women over 65 years of age across Miami, Puerto Rico and Quebec. Retiro melds the autobiographical with the surreal to illustrate the volatility of time, the reconstruction of memories, and the process of aging in women.

North Miami Beach, Fl. March 11th – April 8th 2017 – On Saturday, March 11th at 6:30 pm, the North Miami Beach Library will don its culture and gala persona to host its first art exhibit. The opening exhibit will highlight the works of 18 contemporary artists whose bold and imposing pieces celebrate and honor the literary works of Maya Angelou, award winning author, poet, dancer, inspirational speaker and women’s advocate. The show will be on display through April 8th, 2017.

Untold Stories, an exhibit that highlights the female figure, historical transitions, societal opposition, silence, stories, hope and renewed vision, is sure to delight the senses of art aficionados and newbies alike. The exhibit features the works of established artist and muralist Freddy Villamil, mixed media artist and painter Alicia M. Vallejo and colorful bucolic scenes by renowned Sophia LaCroix among the many fantastic presenters. The exhibit was curated to present the best our Southeast Florida Community has to offer.

The opening reception for Untold Stories will take place on Saturday, March 11th at 6:30 pm and open the doors of NMB to a display that will accentuate the International Women’s Day/ Month celebration. The stage will be set with art in various formats including installations and sculptures. Local author, journalist, mixed media artist and winner of the 2016 Latin Book Award, Vanessa Garcia will launch the evening celebration. Inspirational and Empowerment speaker and author Kathy Andersen and Illustrator and author Alexandra Barbot will also be on-hand to make this a momentous event. Appetizers will be provided and a cash bar will be available.

NMB Library observation of IWD has been celebrating accomplishments and energizing women of all ages to dream and achieve rather than allowing societal constraints for the past three years. As a member of the Institute of Museums and Libraries, NMB library is elated to present an occasion of powerful cultural significance to the North Miami Beach Community. “I’ve always been inspired by the stories of those who are able to rise above adversity” said, Edenia M. Hernández, NMB Library manager. “Maya Angelou went without speaking for five years after a hideous abuse, later she arose and told her stories.” This exhibit will deliver a formidable message of strength, resiliency and resourcefulness that leads to triumph. It will elevate the spirit through the arts and resonate with those who are energized to tell their stories freely, those conflicted by the past, struggling in the present or someone who appreciates the challenges faced. We can all RISE above our circumstances and seek a life as intended, filled with hope, dreams and accomplishments for the future. Artistic expression is a healthy way to articulate our emotions. “Above all this event should inspire us to tell our stories that we may pass on the hope that has been placed in us.”

When Ballaké Sissoko & Vincent Segal released their first collaborative album, Chamber Music in 2011, they caught the music world by surprise. Everything about this duo was unexpected: the Malian master of the traditional harp, or kora; the French cellist with the unlikely background in trip-hop; and the elegant, soulful music they made together. After years of touring together Sissoko and Segal have created their own hybrid tradition, one that draws on the ancient well of West African troubadour songs, the rich heritage of Baroque music, and an elusive but somehow clearly modern sensibility.

Axis of Love is a three-part concert series presented by The Rhythm Foundation with major support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Tickets are $20 for individual concerts in advance, $50 for a three-concert series.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301

Girls’ Club presents Offsite Performance by Christina Pettersson:: Along the Shadow of the River, a multi-disciplinary public performance set along the banks of the historic New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

Taking place on the riverside grounds of the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society at 219 SW 2nd Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301, Along the Shadow of the River takes inspiration from the historic river and the women whose histories are forever linked to its waters.

Audience members are invited to tour the grounds, encountering different performers as they make their way east across the railroad tracks in this progressive performance and walking tour. The performance will begin promptly at sundown.

Created by Christina Pettersson, the performance brings together local musicians, dancers, opera singers and artists to embody historic female figures who have made integral contributions to the founding and history of Fort Lauderdale.

Part homage, part history lesson, these interpretive, performative biographies tell the story of Fort Lauderdale’s forgotten heroines including: Frankee Lewis, Fort Lauderdale’s first permanent non-native resident circa 1824; Mary Brickell, the largest single property owner in the central part of Fort Lauderdale and prominent real estate developer/manager circa 1908-1922; Ivy Stranahan, Fort Lauderdale’s first school teacher, an active social activist, suffragette and proponent of Seminole Indian rights who lived in Fort Lauderdale from the age of 18 in 1899, to her death in 1971; and more.

Performers include Shanna Nolan Gundry, a Mezzo-Soprano opera singer; Shira Abergel, a professional multi-instrument musician, singer and actress; Tara Long, Miami-based experimental performance artist and musician under the alias POORgrrrl; Nikki Rollason, dancer and performance artist; Octavia Yearwood, an arts educator, choreographer and founder of Team Ohhh; Jessica Farr, actress, playwright and stand-up comedian; and Mae Silver, historian and author of numerous books including ‘Too Hot To Hide: Remarkable Women of Fort Lauderdale.’

Students of the Guitars Over Guns program, in response to the tragic loss of Jakyri Fleurimar (age 15), are releasing a remake music video of Wiz Khalifa’s hit ‘See You Again’, March 2nd, 2017 at Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM).

Replacing verses of the original song with their own lyrics, GOGO students such as Xavier Gustave, cousin of Fleurimar, had the opportunity to express themselves in honor of Fleurimar’s memory and the many others lost to senseless gun violence. The song and video remake, which involved more than 80 Miami-Dade County Public School students, is a community call-to-action; a platform for those who can still speak up, want to be heard and want to make a difference.

This special screening, hosted by Local 10 Anchor Neki Mohan, will be the first public showing of this project, promising to engage the community in conversation surrounding solution-based actions. As part of the evening’s program, messages of encouragement will be delivered by Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho (via video), WSVN 7 Reporter Ann Keil and Commander Francisco Fernandez of the City of Miami Police Department.

Students spent months writing, rehearsing and editing this project, which was recorded at Noisematch Recording Studio in Wynwood, and filmed at North Miami Middle School with a special appearance by members of the North Miami Police Department.

Come out and show your support!

Karen is an Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. She teaches core design studios, advanced option studios, and contemporary theories of landscape architecture. Her advanced options studios explore techniques for working with repetition, ornamentation and surface modulation as a means to produce new forms of topography. Her book titled Unearthed: the Landscapes of Hargreaves Associates (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2013) utilizes a selection of work by this highly regarded landscape architecture practice as a vehicle by which to gauge recent disciplinary trends. She received a research grant and publication grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts and The David R. Coffin Publication Grant from the Foundation for Landscape Studies.

Other writings include “Synthetic Patterns: Fabricating Landscapes in the Age of Green”(Journal of Landscape Architecture, Spring 2013), “Not Garden” in VIA: Dirt (Cambridge: MIT Press, 2011), “Criticality in Landscape Architecture: Origins in 19th-century American practices, in Modernism and Landscape Architecture, 1890-1940” (Washington D.C.: National Gallery Center for Advanced Studies in the Visual Arts, forthcoming 2013), among others. Her focus considers the use of design techniques and the environmental values they manifest in both Modern-era and contemporary landscape designs. Her forthcoming book (co-authored with Keith VanDerSys), entitled Dynamic Patterns: Visualizing Landscapes in a Digital Age (Routledge Press), situates the emerging expressions of pattern in landscape architecture.

Karen received a Masters in Landscape Architecture with distinction from Harvard University and a Bachelor of Architecture with distinction from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc).

Keith VanDerSys is a founding partner of PEG office of landscape + architecture. Prior to founding PEG, Keith worked for other award-winning architecture offices as a project designer and project architect.

Keith is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania. His construction and fabrication knowledge provides the foundation for successful integration of new technologies with conventional practices and materials. These courses are geared specifically towards investigating the relevancy of new forms of digital media and fabrication to site application. Students investigate common landscape products such as geo-synthetics, gabions, and unit-based materials, such as pavers and wall components, in order to forge alternative methods for constructing landscapes.

He received his Master of Arts in Critical Studies in Architectural Culture from UCLA and Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Detroit Mercy. He was also the recipient of an URF Research Grant, EDCO Research Grant, Graham Foundation Grant, BSA Research Grant and an AIGC Fellowship.

The 117 Girls’ Club building opened in the fall of 2007, renovated for use as an unpredictable art space by local architect and designer Margi Nothard of Glavovic Studio. Founded by Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz, and led by director Michelle Weinberg, Girls’ Club opened as the only private collection open to the public with a focus on contemporary art by women, in the world.

Throughout its 10-year history, the building has stood as a convergence point and catalyst for the growing contemporary art developments in the Fort Lauderdale and Broward County area. Its galleries have witnessed 10 major exhibitions of contemporary art, curated by emerging and mid career artists and curators. The building has hosted film screenings, artist talks, stitch and bitches, professional development workshops, experimental theatre, lectures, musical performances, parties, dinners, outreach workshops and countless student and community tours. Its walls have supported students artists, emerging artists, critically acclaimed artists, international rock star artists, both female and male. It’s doors have welcomed women, men, dogs, cats, lizards, students, children, carebears, and everything in between in an effort to fulfill its mission to educate the public, act as a resource and the nurture of the careers of contemporary female artists.

Join us as we cheers to its last exhibit and hear about the exciting next chapter in store for Girls’ Club!

Website
Cost: $5; free to MOCA members and North Miami residents.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami will launch its spring season with Synergism: Ekaterina and Victor Khromin. The exhibition centers on a search for freedom of expression as the husband and wife team emigrated from the Soviet Union to the United States on a life-long journey towards the contemporary art scene. Synergism will be on display from March 23 through May 21, 2017. The artist’s reception will be held on Thursday, March 30, from 7-9 p.m.

Synergism will feature paintings, installations, and video by Ekaterina and Victor Khromin. The Russian-born husband and wife chart an artistic territory quite their own, painting on bas-reliefs that are collages of found objects. Their works reveal pioneering approaches to art-making created by the synergy of technologies in art conservation.

The work generates a conscious awareness and expanded knowledge of self and collective identity of the Black Female Body. The performance will “un-earth’ significant historical, economical, philosophical, and cultural contributions of the Black Female Body utilizing ancestral memory, story, song, text, collective memory, and moving images with an exploration of landscape, environment, and the metaphysical body. This original work is a story of displacement, migration, reciprocity, sustainability, and exile to freedom.

South Florida JAZZ, the area’s premier modern jazz organization, continues its 25th Anniversary celebration by presenting world-renowned vibraphonist Gary Burton

in a career farewell concert with long-term collaborator, pianist Makoto Ozone. The performance will take place on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 8:00 p.m. in the Rose

& Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr Blvd, Davie 33314. Tickets are $40 ($10 for students under

age 25 with valid I.D.) and can be purchased from Ticketmaster either online via http://www.southfloridajazz.org or by calling 954-462-0222.

Gary Burton is the most important vibraphonist of the modern era. Largely self-taught, he is a major innovator on his instrument because of his conception and

mastery of an extraordinary and four-mallet technique that continues to elude most practitioners. His accomplishments resulted in seven Grammy Awards. He has

been voted Best Vibraphonist innumerably in the important trade polls. In 2016, he was awarded a richly-deserved Fellowship from the National Endowment for the

Arts as a Jazz Master, an honor given only to luminaries who have advanced the art form.

Makoto Ozone (o-zo-nee) was born into a musical family in Kobe, Japan and began to play organ at age two. At twelve, inspired by Oscar Peterson, he switched to

piano. While classically trained, he strove to become a jazz pianist and met Gary Burton when he came to Berklee School of Music in Boston to study in 1980. He

played a classical solo concert in Carnegie Hall in 1983, the same year that he joined Gary’s jazz band. He stayed in the US until 1989, returning to Japan where he

continued performing works from the classical repertoire with major orchestras to rave reviews – a very rare acceptance of a jazz musician.

In 2013, in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of their debut together, Makoto toured with Gary in Japan for a month. They have now collaborated memorably

for over 33 years. This performance for South Florida JAZZ represents the conclusion, as Gary Burton retires from the profession with a brief tour with his friend Makoto.

This is the first of five FREE Artscape concerts for the 2017 season in Collins Park, 2100 Collins Ave., Miami Beach.

Dr. Michael White has been instrumental in keeping alive the New Orleans jazz tradition of his ancestors, some of whom were among the earliest jazz musicians. A professor of Spanish and African American Music at Xavier University in New Orleans, White has become well known on the jazz scene. He performs, writes and lectures on jazz, and is among a very few current clarinetists to develop an original authentic interpretation of the exciting New Orleans style.

He has been widely acknowledged as an expert in the field of traditional New Orleans jazz, and currently serves as a commissioner of the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park. He has coordinated, performed in and hosted numerous jazz programs for Jazz at Lincoln Center, several universities and many other organizations. In addition to touring worldwide with his own Original Liberty Jazz Band and other groups at major concert halls and festivals, he has appeared in numerous documentaries, films and interviews. White has performed and/or recorded with noted musicians such as Wynton Marsalis, Lionel Hampton and Marcus Roberts. He has played on numerous highly acclaimed recordings, including his own critically acclaimed Crescent City Serenade and New Years at the Village Vanguard.

Dr. White has been given numerous awards and recognition for his contributions, including the rank of Chevalier of Arts and Letters by the French Government in 1987 and a National Heritage Fellowship Award by the National Endowment of the Arts in 2008.

The afternoon will open with a performance by Dr Ed Calle’s student jazz ensemble, and there will be a farmer’s market as well hosted by The Market Company. Special thanks to our presenting sponsor, the LeRoy Schecter Foundation.

For its next installment, the Young Artist Initiative has decided to evoke the study of the relationship between function and aesthetic in art, architecture, and design through its exhibition, Complements & Dichotomies. All participating artists and designers will be presented with the challenge of interpreting the exhibition’s central thesis: How do aesthetic and functionality converge in the creation of beauty?

Designed by award winning Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, 1111 Lincoln Road houses world-class shopping and dining as well as the most visually stimulating automotive parking imaginable. Panoramic city, ocean and bay views, soaring 34 foot ceilings, and a dramatic concrete structure serve as the backdrop for our exhibition on the garage’s 7th floor.

The exhibition itself will exist as an experiential art form through its collection of immersive artistic interpretations from a curated group of emerging artists, architects, and designers. We invite you to enjoy and ponder the reflections of Miami’s emerging artists.

To note, free RSVP’s are only valid until 9:30pm EST. Early Bird Tickets & General Admission Tickets guarrantee admission to the Young Artist Initiative. Tickets are non-refundable. Tickets will be available at the door.

Guests must be 21+.
