Rockford Projects seeks innovative artworks for the inaugural artCURATED sector of ArtFTL 2019.
ArtFTL returns for the 3rd year as the premier art fair in Fort Lauderdale, drawing collectors during the height of the season in South Florida. Fort Lauderdale is known as the “Venice of America” due to its expansive and intricate canal system, and this 4-day curated art fair showcases the art within luxury waterfront properties. Attendees are transported via complimentary water taxi on an artistic journey along the famed Intracoastal waterways, in the heart of the arts and entertainment district.
The ArtCURATED sector will encompass an entire property of 5,000 to 10,000 square feet, and feature 40+ artists, within six distinct, thematic exhibitions, under the direction of Lisa Rockford.

Seeking art that corresponds to the following Exhibition Themes:
• ECSTASY: A Celebration of Color. Seeking Monochromatic artworks (made of a single/dominant, vivid color), or works that offer all colors in the rainbow, within one work.
• AURA: A celebration of Light. Seeking artworks that reference intense light, auras, or are made with neon, LEDs, florescent, incandescent lights, digital, or electric light components.
• NARCISSUS: Seeking art with mirrors, mirrored surfaces, and/or chrome, or polished stainless steel.
• ELEMENTAL: Earth and Water. Seeking artworks that emphasize earth or water, and/or the human connection to either. Artworks that reference ecological concerns, like sea level rise, and pollution, are of curatorial emphasis.
• MEMENTO MORI: Seeking artwork that references death, time, mortality, and transience.
• OMEGA: The absence of color. Seeking artworks that are nearly or completely white, yet offer exquisite surface quality, texture, or aesthetic.
Please note: This Call for Art (and the themes & terms listed here) are specifically for the artCURATED sector of ArtFTL, and is a separate application (with a different fee structure) from the ArtINDIE Category on the ArtFTL website. Art requirements:
• Artists may submit up to 5 artworks, but will be limited to 3 artworks in the exhibit. (Artworks with multiple pieces may be considered one work).
• All submissions must be original work, created by the applicant, and without violation of copyrighted imagery. One of a kind works are encouraged, or very limited editions. (ie. Mass produced prints are not acceptable).
• Submitted images should accurately represent the actual, finished artwork, (not a modified or digital sketch). Any works that do not match the appearance of the submitted images may be disqualified at the discretion of the curator.
• Artworks cannot be larger than 6 feet in any direction.
• All artworks must be available for sale.
• Artwork will be installed by a professional installer, but works that are made up of more than 10 parts, or that cannot be installed without the assistance of the artist are discouraged.

Terms:
• A jury fee of $25 is required with the application.
• Artists will be notified at the earliest possible date, or not later than December 21, 2018.
• If artwork is accepted, each artist will be required to pay $100 for participation. (We have made every effort to keep costs to artists low, as they are a fraction of the 100k production costs for the fair).
• Participating artists will be provided 4 complimentary passes to the fair, and VIP Vernissage invitation for the artist. Artists are not required to be present at the fair, but are encouraged to attend.
• Artists must deliver accepted artworks at their own cost, either by hand-delivering, or by shipping to the art handler, with a return shipping label.
• Sales: Prices should include a 40% commission for ArtFTL, and 60% of the sale price will be sent to the artist. (The price = The amount you want to receive x 1.4)
• If artwork sells, the artwork will be shipped to the buyer, by a professional art handler, at no cost to the artist.

Rachelle earned a bachelors degree in classical guitar performance from the University of Miami. With all of these influences, Rachelle developed her own unique finger-style approach to blues rhythm and lead guitar playing. After college, Rachelle became known in Miami for her unique style and was cast in an indie movie, taught guitar for National Guitar Workshop, and worked on developing guitar methodology.

Her style eventually brought her to the attention of other blues artists. She worked with and toured as a guitarist with artists like Super Chikan, Albert Castiglia, Grady Champion and Ray Drew. After honing her skills as a side-woman, Rachelle stepped out on her own to front her own band. Since then, Rachelle has played around the world and she continues to grace the stage as one of the blues’ most original performers.

Gather your family, friends and coworkers on Thanksgiving morning for the Holy Cross Hospital Fort Lauderdale Turkey Trot! In its eighth year, this 5K run-walk has become a Broward County tradition and attracts thousands of participants. The course runs along scenic A1A, and participants may run, walk or jog. For children who want to race, there will also be a Kids’ Dash!
Aside from supporting the community by inspiring individuals to make healthy lifestyle choices, the event will also raise money for Leadership Broward Foundation, Inc. and the Helena Ramsay Soaring Leader Scholarship. The Helena Ramsay Soaring Leader Scholarship was created by MedPro Healthcare Staffing in memory of Marjory Stoneman Douglas student Helena Ramsay to celebrate her vision for a better global society.

Registration ranges from $20-$40, and the Kids’ Dash is $5. Early registration runs through October 31 at $35 per person with discounted rates for students, military personnel and children under 12. Registration costs $40 pp after November 1. Online registration will run through November 18. Packet pick up will take place at The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale (2414 E. The Design District juxtaposes design brands with internationally important art collections, phenomenal temporary and permanent art and design installations, and great restaurants. Spanierman Modern presents Capricious Calculations, an exhibition by Brooklyn painter and educator Lisa Corinne Davis. In this body of work, the artist transforms the familiar, and subverts meanings and connotations through experimentation with objective and subjective formal languages. The show is also the debut exhibition at Spanierman Modern’s new Midtown Miami space. Capricious Calculations will run from October 19 through November 13, 2018 at Spanierman Modern (located at 151 NE 41 Street in Midtown, suite p133). An opening reception will be held on Friday, October 19, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Gallery hours are Monday – Saturday, 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., and Sunday 12:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Through the works in Capricious Calculations, Davis continues her exploration into the use of color, geometry, and subjective and objective forms to suggest the complex relationship between race, culture, and history. Davis’ manner of painting is located between abstraction and figuration – a semiotic position devised to encourage a viewer to relocate and reconsider their own proximity to form and the personal experiences and ideas that affect their ability to read an image. At the heart of Davis’ practice is the notion that the viewer must decide whether the information in each painting should be received as presented or dynamically interpreted according to their individual lens. If the latter choice is made the viewer must also contend with the fact that all memory and relational understandings brought to the work are subjective, and thus, renders any readings hinging upon them as fluid and without static definitions with the passage of time.

Lisa Corinne Davis’ oeuvre shuttles between allowing the paint to fulfill its mark-making function on the canvas, while referencing the physical world and cheeky nods to modern ubiquity and dependence on technology. The paintings are a playful investigation that culls different formal languages into one two-dimensional plane where both the paints and the compositions themselves misbehave, stretch, and transform to create a new kind of unified field. For the artist, both visual and written languages serve as malleable mediums for experimentation. With titles like Analytical Anarchism, Quixotic Quantum, etc. the artist draws together disparate ideological references to further engage viewers whilst simultaneously allowing the paint to speak for itself.

She is the recipient of the 2018 People of Distinction Humanitarian Award by Al Cole from CBS Radio, and the Meljourne Woman Award. Museum of Art and Design at Miami Dade College presents SUPERFLEX: We Are All in the Same Boat, the first large-scale exhibition of the critically acclaimed Danish collective SUPERFLEX in the United States. The exhibition will focus on the group’s humorous and playfully subversive installations and films that deal with the economy, financial crisis, corruption, migration, and the possible consequences of global warming.

The exhibition will include a group of video, sculpture, and installation works selected for their relevance to the history, present, and future of the City of Miami. The works will reflect upon the situation of Miami from the perspectives of art, finance, climate, and a fictional, if plausible, future. Family Days is on the last Sunday of every month at the Museum of Art and Design at Miami Dade College offers free admission to families with children and hands-on educational activities designed with the whole family in mind. This monthly event features artist-led workshops, interactive gallery tours, and other activities sure to be fun for everyone!
Family programs are tailored for children ages 5 to 12 and their families or adult companions. MOAD MDC’s Family Days will enhance your experience of the museum’s current exhibitions, as well as Miami Dade College’s Special Collections Galleries at the Freedom Tower.
Come and join us for a shared learning experience, exploring ideas and creating together.
MOAD MDC’s Family Days Programs take place from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on the last Sunday of each month. No advance registration is required. Please check our website’s events page for more detailed information. Family Days workshops take place in MOAD MDC’s Educational Lab. Beyond its food, artfully created and executed by chef/owner Michael Pirolo, Macchialina is known as a must-try destination for wine lovers; especially those seeking unique, obscure and amazing Italian wines.

Overseen by director of operations and co-owner Jacqueline Pirolo, Macchialina’s wine list is a treasure trove for oenphiles and those with a case of Italophilia. So it’s little surprise that Macchialina would host a dinner with this revered winery.

The evening will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. with a welcome pour and a chance to speak with special guest, the winery’s export manager Raphaella Guidi Ferderzoni.

The dinner will feature four courses from Chef Pirolo, each paired with a different wine. Reserve vintages of the winery’s celebrated brunellos will be poured and all of the wines from the dinner, some of which are on allocation, will be available to pre-order the night of the dinner. Seats for the dinner are $85 per person, all inclusive. Seats are limited and should be reserved in advance.

The Fort Lauderdale Historical Society and BroCoMo (Bro-ward Co-unty Mo-dern) will present a Mid-century Modern Architectural Tour highlighting the historic architecture of our city and the unique works of Dan Duckham. Duckham, now in his 80s, was one of a group of trailblazing modernist architects in Florida who rose to prominence in late 1950s and 60s. His designs were inspired by the organic architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright with the fusion of the outdoors and indoors through geometric forms and construction. The tour begins and ends at the New River Inn. Parking is available at the County Garage with entrance on 2nd Street. Lunch is included. Tour leaders are from BroCoMo.

Benefiting the Broward Health Foundation’s Lillian S. Wells Women’s Health Center

In support of the Glam-A-THON™ – a local nonprofit that assists underfunded women undergoing breast cancer treatment – famed Iron Chef and Food Network Chopped judge, Geoffrey Zakarian, invites guests to celebrate stone crab season with the second annual “Stone Crabs for a Cause” on October 19th at Point Royal.

Zakarian, whose culinary career spans more than 30 years as an acclaimed chef, restaurateur, cookbook author, and TV personality, will serve as host for the evening, curating a four-course dinner that highlights one of Florida’s most beloved seasonal seafoods – stone crabs. The menu will be paired with premium wines from Bodvár House of Rosé.

Open to the public for $155 per person, a portion of proceeds from the event will be donated to Glam-A-THON™, which has raised more than $500,000 over the past six years to help fund free mammograms, diagnostic testing and other needs associated with treatment though the Broward Health Foundation’s Lillian S. PAMM will kick off the fifth year of the Scholl Lecture Series with distinguished artist and filmmaker Arthur Jafa. Jafa’s interdisciplinary practice combines film, installation, sculpture, and performance to examine assumptions about race and identity. Throughout his multifaceted career, Jafa has worked with John Akomfrah, Ava DuVernay, Beyoncé and Solange Knowles, Spike Lee, and Jay-Z, among many others. 10 artisans will be selected and featured for each event.

This charity bike ride has been organized by a former University of Miami (UM) student to honor the life of his recently departed grandfather and simultaneously “raise awareness and funding while giving those affected by Alzheimers a voice that they cannot give themselves.” All proceeds will benefit Alzheimer Disease (AD) research at UM’s Hussman Institute for Human Genomics (HIHG).

After a skill level and musical preferences assessment, fantasy campers are placed in a band with other like-minded, similarly skilled musicians all ready to rock. Whatever their level of proficiency – from lead guitar to rhythm guitar to air guitar – abilities and confidence will grow during rehearsal under the constant guidance of rock star counselors.

These recognized musicians won’t simply coordinate your band, they’ll inspire in a series of intimate master classes on the camper’s chosen instrument, stage presence, and everything rock and roll, along with tales from the road. Our newest class, THE ROUNDTABLE, welcomes campers to bring their original song to work on with our incredibly talented and skilled rock star counselors. Campers will take part in Q&As with headliner and rock star counselors, parties, catering, road crew and more. Ultimately, attendees will practice, show-off skills in front of family and friends at camp, take photos, get memorabilia signed and then jam live, onstage, with Joe Perry of Aerosmith and Jason Bonham.

The night of February 25th, 1964, a young Cassius Clay emerges from the Miami Beach Convention Center as the World Heavyweight Boxing Champion. Against all odds, he’s defeated Sonny Liston and shocked the world of boxing. While crowds of people swarm Miami Beach’s hotspots to celebrate the match, Clay, unable to stay on the island because of Jim Crow-era segregation laws, spends the night at the Hampton House Motel celebrating with three of his friends: activist Malcolm X, singer Sam Cooke, and football icon Jim Brown. One Night in Miami… is a play that traces Cassius Clay’s journey to becoming the legendary Muhammad Ali, squarely centering Miami’s critical role as pivotal to the American Civil Rights Movement.

MIAMI, FL (October, 2018) – What happens when you mix the mystical philosophy and music of India with the forward-leaning jazz of the legendary Alice Coltrane? That intoxicating, otherworldly yet deeply earthy music was nearly lost to history until David Byrne (of Talking Heads and more fame) and his Luaka Bop record label recently brought it back to the public with the release of a new album compilation. On Friday, October 12, South Florida audiences have the chance to hear that music live, from the Sai Anatam Singers, who originally performed Coltrane’s devotional compositions, including Alice’s musician daughter Michelle Coltrane, at the North Beach Bandshell, presented by The Rhythm Foundation.

Alice Coltrane was an acclaimed jazz musician, composer, and the wife of John Coltrane, the most venerated and influential saxophonist in the history of jazz. In 1967, John died, leaving Alice a widow with four small children. Bereft of her soul mate Alice turned to Indian spirituality, eventually opening the Shanti Anantam Ashram. Music was the foundation of Alice’s spiritual practice and during this time she released recordings inspired by jazz and the gospel music of the Detroit churches she grew up in, mixed with the Indian music of her religious practice.

This unique concert event, led by Surya Botofasina, an actor and musician who grew up in Coltrane’s ashram, continues The Rhythm Foundation’s eclectic 2018 fall season. “We are all so excited to not only pay tribute to the iconic Alice Coltrane with this event, but also to bring this powerful spiritual and musically moving concert to our North Beach Bandshell” says Par Neiburger, Artistic Director of The Rhythm Foundation.

Since 1994, FIU’s Cuban Research Institute (CRI) has organized an annual concert series featuring music on Cuban themes by Cuban and other composers. The purpose of this public event is to celebrate, preserve, and promote the rich and diverse musical heritage of Cuba and its diaspora.

CRI will hold the 14th installment of its Classically Cuban concert series on December 2, 2018, at the Wertheim Performing Arts Center of the FIU School of Music on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus. Virtuoso pianists and Cuban brothers Orlay Alonso and Orlando Alonso present an immersive experience that places the audience at the center of the “Golden Era” of Cuban music and entertainment of the 1940s and 1950s.

From the sensuality and seductive melodies of the bolero, to the exotic and complex rhythms of the mambo and cha cha, Cuba’s musical heritage spans centuries and has influenced most popular music of our time. Presented by the Alonso Brothers, this interactive show features a variety of Cuban styles such as mambo, cha cha, salsa, bolero, son, danzón, and conga, and includes works by Celia Cruz, Ernesto Lecuona, Ignacio Cervantes, Miguel Faílde, and Dámaso Pérez Prado, among others.

Equally talented, these brothers dazzle with their artistic exuberance and passionate expression. Having played the piano since they each were six years old, Orlando Alonso and Orlay Alonso both attended the National School of the Arts in Havana and earned degrees from Manhattan School of Music and Yale University, among several other prestigious institutions. As a duo, each brother brings his own signature style to the stage. Inspired by their communicative gifts, elegance, and polish, the Alonso brothers shine with a charismatic stage presence that is a pleasure to behold.

Celebrate the colorful traditions and heritage of Mexico’s Día de los Muertos during “Ofrendas,” a cultural immersion exhibit, opening Sunday, October 7 at Fort Lauderdale Historical Society. The History Museum housed in the New River Inn on the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society campus will be awash in bold hues and imaginative decor as it showcases both fine art and creative community memorial altars or “ofrendas,” covered in photographs, flowers and favorite items of the dearly departed. Associated activities will include family fun on opening day from noon – 4 p.m., a Community Conversation about Day of the Dead with an artifact repatriation ceremony on October 29 at 6 p.m. and a closing evening of parades, costumes and revelry on Friday, November 2 from noon – 8 p.m.

This “Ofrendas” exhibit is part of Fort Lauderdale Historical Society’s “Fall in Love” Florida resident discount program. “Fall in Love” will offer residents a chance to experience history in the heart of Downtown Fort Lauderdale, participate in activities and view new exhibits at 50% off general admission each visit through November 30 (some exclusions apply) and receive 25% off of a $100 yearly membership which includes admission to hundreds of museums around the US through the Southeast Museums Reciprocal Program.*

Critically acclaimed guitarist, composer, and bandleader Greg Diamond creates music inspired by Latin American sounds and rhythms which he seamlessly infuses into the context of contemporary jazz — with modal harmonies, compound meters, and various other elements that comprise the vibrant and dynamic musical tapestry of his native city of New York. All About Jazz hails Diamond, who is of mixed Colombian and Jewish origin, as “a rising star in the New York jazz scene..” Latin Jazz Network writes that Diamond is a “composer of great maturity and genius” and featured his sophomore release “Conduit” [Dot Time 2012] as an Editor’s Pick for “Best Albums of 2012”. Indeed, Diamond has cultivated a distinguishable sound with his own his writing, a crack ensemble, and his use of the electric guitar — an instrument not often associated with this genre.

SPF’18 will take over FATVillage Saturday, November 10, 2018, for an epic, print-happy day of exhibitors, with a market of print, book and zine exhibitors from Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Boca Raton, Orlando, Gainesville and beyond, a giant steamroller pressing the largest prints of the fair, live demonstrations of print-making techniques, creation stations and art making activities, a stage of author and poets talks, a cabana with ice cold, locally crafted beer, food trucks and so much more!

SPF’18 will showcase a diverse range of local and regional artists, printers, publishers, authors, poets, bookmakers, designers, zinesters and cultural workers, sharing and exhibiting new work related to printmaking, book making and zine creation.

What is a zine? A zine (/ˈziːn/ ZEEN; short for magazine or fanzine) is most commonly a small-circulation, self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images, usually reproduced via photocopier or similarly inexpensive means. Zines are usually the product of a single person, or of a very small group. The primary intent is to advance the views of the creator rather than profit, since the time and materials necessary to create a zine are seldom matched by revenue from its sale. Zines tend to deal with subjects that are too controversial or niche for mainstream media.

SPF’18 exhibitors will take over The Projects in FATVillage, Fort Lauderdale, a 8,000+ sq ft warehouse space, celebrating the growing interest and support for independent and small press artists and publishers that have fueled the sub-culture in South Florida for years.

Funding for SPF’18 is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council as well as the following Funds from the Community Foundation of Broward: Fonda and H. Wayne Huizenga, Jr Family Trust Fund, Gary J. Scotto Fund and Mary and Alex Mackenzie Community Impact Fund. Additional funding is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council and Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Proceeds from the event will go towards Neighbors 4 Neighbors’ Family Fund, a program that offers financial assistance to otherwise self-sufficient individuals who have an immediate need or emergency, preventing them from entering the cycle of poverty. The Family Fund will purchase supermarket gift cards for families experiencing food insecurity.

Miami Flea is back with a new season! The Miami Flea brings together local artisans, live music and good vibes for the community to enjoy. Join us on the third Sunday of every month to check out artisans who specialize in vintage, handmade, homemade, health, small batch food and beverage items.

This fall we are bringing the Miami Flea back to its roots. Our goal is to further growth and sustainability for local artists and innovators while inspiring the community and representing the Arts + Entertainment District as the progressive collective it is. The Miami Flea revolves around a social atmosphere where the community can sip crafty cocktails, listen to good jams and support local artisans. Everyone is welcome!

The September Miami Flea will feature music by Brothers of Others, Keith Johns, and Zander Waves.
