How Deep Is The Ocean?

Modern Self-Discovery at Miami River Art Fair
December 3-5, 2018

Art Basel Miami Beach is one of the world’s most successful art events, which takes place at the same time as numerous satellite art fairs in the first week of December. In the heart of Miami Downtown, just a few Metromover stops away from the new Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), Miami River Art Fair reflects the urban landscape of Miami and responds to the city’s rapid growth as a cultural destination.

One of the exhibitors at Miami River Art Fair Dr. Barbara Aust-Wegemund, Director at Gallery AHC Projects (booth B1), is invited to curate the group show “How Deep is The Ocean?” Modern self-discovery in Philosophy and Arts. A curated group show with Pioneer Artists. About her concept and intention, the curator and art historian explains:

“The Romantic natural philosophers interpreted the sea as a source of life, continuing in the creation of modern criteria of ethical behavior, which culminates in a new bio-ethics and a new understanding of the sea. The curated exhibition is asking “How deep in the Ocean?” as a philosophical question. Ocean Philosophy delves into aesthetics – the sea as the symbol of the sublime – and modern self-discovery – the sea as a mirror of the soul. The exhibition invites to explore connections between Romantic and Modernity, real and (inner) journeys, identity, infinity and space.

Celebrating international emerging and established artists in Miami, the juried show presents original artworks by Louis Atelouis, Tracy L. Barwick, Khalilah Birdsong, Carole Kohler, Marianna Kupriyanova, KanKan Ramos-Lim, Claudia Mini and Sal Sidner.

In partnership with the Community Foundation of Broward, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, and the City of Fort Lauderdale, and with support from the Museum of Discovery and Science and Riverwalk Fort Lauderdale, the Fort Lauderdale Downtown Development Authority is excited to announce that internationally acclaimed artist Arlin Graff has been selected to install an original art mural on the Arts & Entertainment (A&E) District Garage located in DowntownFTL at 101 SW 5 Avenue, Fort Lauderdale. On Wednesday, Nov. 7 there will be a Ribbon Cutting celebration outside Broward Center for the Performing Arts on the Wendt Terraces overlooking the New River. Local elected officials, the Community Foundation of Broward, partner agency representatives/board members, School Board partners, Broward Workshop members, community members and more will be in attendance. This event is open to the public. Guests will enjoy light refreshments.

The installation of this iconic art mural will elevate the overall aesthetics of the garage and will further connect the parking garage to the surrounding arts and science centers. This art mural will create a sense of place for the Riverwalk A&E District and a recognizable landmark along Himmarshee Street, a gateway into DowntownFTL.

Arlin’s unique geometric style is rooted in his childhood moments in rural Brazil, playing with scraps of wood in his father’s woodshed. As a teenager he began with street art and later studied Industrial Design in college. Arlin began to piece all these references together into his own type of deconstructionism; creating a very distinct style, giving life to his abstract creations that seem to be emerging from a digital work.

Proceeds from the event will go towards Neighbors 4 Neighbors’ Family Fund and victims of Hurricane Michael through a partnership with Farm Share. The Family Fund program offers financial assistance to otherwise self-sufficient individuals who have an immediate need or emergency, preventing them from entering the cycle of poverty. The Family Fund will purchase supermarket gift cards for families experiencing food insecurity.

“During hard times, people economize by going hungry, and with 37% of Miami-Dade households either in poverty or making ends meet, it is important we host events like these to support those in need in our community, especially true after a natural disaster such as Hurricane Michael,” said Yaser Mohamad, General Manager, National Hotel. “By supporting Neighbors 4 Neighbors’ Family Fund, we are helping restore the financial self-sufficiency of individuals who are willing to work but are temporarily unable to do so or are going through unexpected hardships.”

Embracing the warm, welcoming and vibrant glamour of The Confidante, the evening will take place in The 1930s House, a private, outdoor Spanish-style bungalow originally built as a one-bedroom family home. Once located across the street from the Collins Avenue hotel, the structure was picked up by crane and relocated to The Backyard at The Confidante, where it currently resides. The evening features passed hors d’oeuvres and retro-themed welcome cocktails created in partnership with The Confidante’s food and beverage team and Tequila Revolución’s master mixologists. Renowned local chef Richard Hales, Chef/Partner of American-inspired on-site eatery Bird & Bone, will showcase a specially curated three-course menu expertly paired with three different expressions of Tequila Revolución.

Chef Hales and Sosa will be present to guide guests through the culinary journey, explaining how the flavors of each dish pair with the tequila. As a 15+ year veteran in the wine and spirits industry, Sosa has represented various prestigious tequila brands such as Patron, Sauza, Cazadores and Partida. After the food and spirits journey, guests will end the evening with a social hour complete with a cigar rolling station and open bar.

The Legendary House of Lords will be on hand to make sure we have a BALL. Vogue, or voguing, is a highly stylized, modern house dance originating in the late 1980s that evolved out of the Harlem ballroom scene of the 1960s.[1] It gained mainstream exposure when it was featured in Madonna’s song and video “Vogue” (1990), and when showcased in the 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning.

Longtime Lindy hop creative Sugar Sullivan and South Florida Lindy Collective will be on hand this year to get the party in Swing! Lindy hop is an American dance which was born in Harlem, New York City in 1928 and has evolved since then with the jazz music of that time. It was very popular during the Swing era of the late 1930s and early 1940s. Lindy was a fusion of many dances that preceded it or were popular during its development but is mainly based on jazz, tap, breakaway, and Charleston.

Worlds Game Events is also part of the “Smash the Slumlords” campaign, and will be in attendance to make sure the SMASH Bash has Super Smash Bros. in attendance. Super Smash Bros.[1] is a series of crossover fighting video games published by Nintendo. It primarily features characters from their own franchises. The series was created by Masahiro Sakurai, who has directed every game in the series.

Stonewall National Museum is one of the country’s few LGBTQ-focused museums, and SMASH is honored to work with Stonewall in the historic creation of Miami’s first dedicated housing facility for LGBTQ Homeless Youth.

“She plays the hell out of the guitar” – Matt “Guitar” Murphy

Rachelle earned a bachelors degree in classical guitar performance from the University of Miami. With all of these influences, Rachelle developed her own unique finger-style approach to blues rhythm and lead guitar playing. After college, Rachelle became known in Miami for her unique style and was cast in an indie movie, taught guitar for National Guitar Workshop, and worked on developing guitar methodology.

Her style eventually brought her to the attention of other blues artists. She worked with and toured as a guitarist with artists like Super Chikan, Albert Castiglia, Grady Champion and Ray Drew. After honing her skills as a side-woman, Rachelle stepped out on her own to front her own band. Since then, Rachelle has played around the world and she continues to grace the stage as one of the blues’ most original performers.

Rachelle’s band features AJ Kelly (bass), Raul Valdes (drums), Allen Paul (piano), and special guests. LauderAle is at 3305 SE 14th Ave in Fort Lauderdale, phone 954-653-9711 (http://lauderale.co). There is no cover charge.

Saturday October 27 at 8 PM: Arts Garage presents Carlos Camilo and the Live Dimension, a fusion band that explores jazz genres without frontiers in a celebration of good taste and soulful music. It is a group of dreamers and friends who have come together to realize a musical vision amidst difficult times which make visionary projects like this one difficult to realize. Nonetheless, against the odds, Carlos Camilo has managed to bring together honorable musicians to glorify music through the complex language of jazz.

Carlos Camilo is a pianist, singer, composer and producer hailing from Cuba and currently based in Miami. Growing up in Cuba, his music is inspired by traditional Cuban flavor mixed with American music. From an early age, Carlos Camilo knew he wanted to pursue music seriously, and has since been influenced by artists such as Alejandro Sanz, Earth Wind and Fire, Brian Culbertson, Brian McKnight, Michael Jackson, Hans Zimmer and countless others. Today, he mainly creates smooth jazz and R&B. He’s released six albums and multiple singles and has played his music all over the globe with other artists, including Spanish Latin superstar, David Bisbal.

Sweet Liberty Drinks & Supply Co. Partners with Waterloo No.9 Gin and Kennesaw Farms to Create World’s Largest Gin & Juice

With Their Mind on the Record and the Record on Their Mind #waterlooginandjuice

On Sunday, October 21st, #21 World’s Best Bar, Sweet Liberty Drinks & Supply Co. in partnership with Treaty Oak Distilling and Kennesaw Farms, will host a record-breaking evening to remember as ‘America’s Best Bar Team’ sets to create the world’s largest Gin & Juice with Waterloo No.9 Gin and Kennesaw Farms juice. The ‘Gin and Juice’ rapper himself, Snoop Dogg, crafted the record-breaking 577-liter cocktail last year at BottleRock Napa festival with the help of fellow West Coast rapper Warren G and Top Chef Season 6 winner Michael Voltaggio. This year, the local’s favorite neighborhood bar, Sweet Liberty, is inviting all locals and out-of-towners alike to partake in Miami cocktail scene history as they set to create the largest-ever 580-LiterWarerloo No.9 Gin & Juice cocktail. Until now, Treaty Oak Distilling’s award-winning portfolio of hand-crafted whiskey and gin has been one of the best kept secrets in Texas. But, the upstart brand recently expanded beyond Texas into new markets, including Miami. The flagship gin (Waterloo No.9) pays homage to traditional dry gins with ingredients like juniper, coriander and anise, but builds in flavor with pecans, lavender and grapefruit zest all harvested in Texas. The night will bring together many of the most well-known names in the global bar industry and bartenders from every corner of the globe to participate in this landmark occasion. Following the conception of this larger than life cocktail, the drink will be broken down into personal sized cocktails for guests to purchase while a percentage of all proceeds will be donated to benefit the son of the late great John Lermayer. October 21st, 2018 marks the 3rd day of Sweet Liberty’s 3rd year anniversary, ending the celebratory weekend with a massive mixology history-making event you won’t want to miss out on!

The final Gin & Juice build will consist of:

320L Waterloo No.9 Gin

160L Fruit Brandy

120L Fruit Juice

TOTAL: 580L

Books & Books’ Coral Gables Gallery Night to Debut New Exhibit
Friday, November 2, 2018
South Florida Artist Evan J. Alexander Presents Abstract Coordinates 30.40

Coral Gables, Florida (October 8, 2018) – The gallery exhibition in November, Abstract Coordinates 30.40, features the work of Florida native, Evan J. Alexander. Comprised of original oil and acrylic paintings the art on display was inspired by the painterly quality of satellite imagery. Evan has focused on a controlled form of abstraction in the paintings made for this exhibition. He navigated certain landscapes to find compositions that aligned with the conventions of his prior work. This furthers the perpetual incorporation of advanced technologies within the traditional medium of oil painting.
Continuing but reorienting landscape painting into a two-dimensional topographical survey aligns with the sensibilities of painting on a two-dimensional surface. This concept defies conventional painting practices by forcing an unnatural view from above as an alternative form of landscape painting. The view from above is foreign to most given our tendencies to observe what is around us rather than what is below.

Evan chose landscapes from Syria seeking a connection with one of his ancestral homelands. Also, as another form of monitoring the transformation of the earth’s surface acknowledging the human interference. With most of the frustrating and troubling recent news regarding Syria, Evan strives to remind viewers of the natural beauty within the turmoil and humanitarian strife.

About Evan J. Alexander:
Evan J. Alexander is a multimedia artist inspired by the random occurrences in the universe. His style lacks the typical identifying qualities across his body of work. Evan might make an oil painting of a seagull he saw on the street and the next day he might create a digital collage of abstract components. Evan was born and raised in South Florida, studied at the University of Miami and ultimately completed his BFA at the School of Visual Arts in New York. To view his work please visit www.EvanJAlexander.net.

From timeless ashes emerge new beginnings at Faena Theater with SAMSARA CABARET, a new original Faena LIVE production in collaboration with Quixotic, debuting October 2018 at Faena Miami Beach.

Inspired by the Sanskrit word “samsara” referencing rebirth, karmic reincarnation and life’s constant change, Samsara Cabaret fuses stunning visuals, contemporary dance, cirque nouveau, live music, state-of-the-art technology, fire performance and more to create an exhilarating theater experience unlike any other.

Narrated by Faena Theater’s Goddess of Experience through a series of lively vignettes, Samsara Cabaret tells the transformative journey of Artemis, a being made of stardust, as she confronts the light and dark energy that surrounds her. Transcending her own dimension, the show’s lead protagonist, played by Miami native Bianca Allanic, undergoes a startling metamorphosis right before the audience’s eyes through song, dance, acrobatics, optical illusions and beyond.

Samsara Cabaret boasts an outstanding ensemble of award-winning talent, including powerhouse singer and “America’s Got Talent” semi-finalist Yoli Mayor, violinist Shane Borth, cellist Ben Munoz, and Sensatia stars Megan Stockman, EnVee and Samanta Mixan.

The incandescent performance, directed by Quixotic’s Anthony Magliano and Christian Squires, is a sensuous meditation on the eternal cycle of creation and transformation, during which guests are siren-called to leave their old selves behind in search for the ever-new.

Shows on Thursday, Friday and Saturdays at 9:00 pm. Dinner Shows on Fridays & Saturdays at 8:00 pm (Show at 9:00 pm). Doors open 60 minutes prior to Dinner Show guests and 30 minutes prior to all guests. Guests ages 18 and older welcome. Tickets begin at $55 and are available at www.faenatheater.com and www.Ticketmaster.com.

Ha*Ash, is a Mexican-American pop and country duo comprised of sisters Hanna Nicole Pérez Mosa and Ashley Grace Pérez Mosa, formed in 2002 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, U.S.

From a young age Hanna and Ashley Pérez Mosa developed an affection towards music, playing their debut show at a talent contest organised by their school in 1998. The performance proved a catalyst for the sisters’ success, who were subsequently invited to play the local Railroad Festival and Louisiana Music Cavalcade. By 2001 the sisters had signed with Sony Music and formed the group Ha*Ash, with the aim of combining Latin pop, country and rock.

Featuring Aureo Baqueiro on the production reigns, Ha*Ash’s self-titled, debut album appeared in 2003. Selling over 140,000 copies, the album found great success aided by the singles “Odio Amarte”, “Estes en donde Estes”, and “Te Quedaste”. The record propelled the sisters to U.S. and Latin American recognition and was later featured on the animated film “Magos y Gigantes”. Once again with Baqueiro on production duties, the duo’s sophomore studio album “Mundos Opuestos” followed in April 2006, rising to No. 4 on the Mexican Albums Chart. Spawning the singles “Amor A Medias”, “Me Entrego a Ti”, and “Tu Miranda En Mí”, it was their third Mexican single, “¿Qué Hago Yo?”, which became a No. 1, beating out Shakira’s “Hips Don’t Lie”.

Drawing influences from a spectrum of sources including Reba McEntire, Soraya, and Sin Bandera, the sisters’ third album saw the arrival of producer Michele Canova. Released in August 2008, “Habitación Doble” (Double Room), generated significant radio play in Mexico notably with the singles “No T Quiero Nada” and “Already Home”. In 2011 a fourth studio album was issued by Ha*Ash entitled “A Tiempo”, following which the pair embarked on a successful Latin American tour. Three years later, Ha*Ash returned to the studio to release “Primera Fila” in 2014 and now in 2018 they are in tour in USA with 100 Años Contigo, with concert in Miami on October 21 at the Fillmore Miami Beach

Colony Theatre
1040 Lincoln Rd,
Miami Beach, Florida 33139
Website
Cost: $20-$80

Ballet Flamenco La Rosa presents the World Premiere of El Conde Dracula. Created and choreographed by Artistic Director of BFLR, Ilisa Rosal, this work was inspired by Bram Stokers’ Dracula. This potent and vivid Flamenco Ballet connects with this timeless material to create a new incarnation of what is probably the most definitive work in this genre.
In the play, a young lawyer (Jonathan Harker) is assigned to a gloomy village in the midst of Eastern Europe. Harker is captured and imprisoned by the undead vampire Dracula, who travels to London, inspired by a photograph of Harker’s betrothed, Mina Murray. In Britain, Dracula begins a reign of seduction and terror, draining the life from Mina’s closest friend, Lucy Westenra. Abraham Van Helsing, the archenemy of Count Dracula, adds a special twist to the story, as Lucy’s friends gather together to try to drive Dracula away.

This production features 12 dancers and musicians, including six top artists directly from Spain led by Special Guest Artist Pepe Flores, one of the most important artists of his time, in the role of Count Dracula. He will be joined by dancers Agustin Barajas, Juan Mateo and Fran Bas along with singer Luis Moreno and guitarist Miguel Aguilera, who will create and perform original vocals and lyrics for the work.

The story and characters help audiences relate to what is being expressed by the music and dance, which becomes a universal language. It creates an exciting and inspiring theater experience.
