‘Hacking School Culture: Designing Compassionate Classrooms’ was written by Ellen Feig Gray, a Miami positive psychology practitioner, researcher, and parent coach, and Angela Stockman, a professional learning facilitator and educational consultant based in New York.

As colleagues and parents who have witnessed an atmosphere of heightened anxiety among students, teachers and parents across the country, Ellen and Angela came to the realization that, “bullying prevention and character building programs, while deepening our awareness of how today’s kids struggle and how we might help, are not enough to create school cultures where students and staff flourish.”

The program will begin with a meet and greet session with the authors, followed by a one-hour interactive workshop starting promptly at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. A book signing and a question and answer session continues until 2:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Lychee Summer Celebration 6/30/18

Lychee Summer Celebration
Saturday, 06/30/2018 – 02:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Schnebly Redland's Winery
30205 SW 217th Avenue,
Homestead, Florida 33030
Website
Cost: $15 – $20

On June 30, Schnebly Redlands Winery will release the Lychee fruits of their labor in a most entertaining way during their Lychee Summer Celebration (LSC), partnering for the first time with the South Dade Chamber of Commerce and the American Cancer Society. The family friendly event has been a source of pride to the area, with South Florida being the only place in the Continental United States where the Lychee fruit is grown. The celebration will begin at 2pm, when the Farmer’s Market opens with 50 vendors and six food trucks. At the Grand Tiki Culinary Lounge, guests will expand their food knowledge and watch Cooking Demos on how to incorporate lychee, local and organic foods in the kitchen. A family Mud Run, an awards ceremony, and live music will round out the celebration only to culminate with a patriotic fireworks display.

“This year’s Lychee harvest is the largest crop we’ve seen in years, not only did the trees survive Hurricane Irma, but the crop was actually improved by the stress of Irma; it’s a testament to the strength of the South Florida community and its agricultural roots,” says Peter Schnebly, Founder of Schnebly Winery. During the Summer Celebration, the Winery will be offering three Lychee wines, and three limited special release Lychee beers from Miami Brewing Company. Several South Florida restaurants and food trucks will offer their culinary take on the Lychee fruit by way of creative recipes, such as Lychee Seafood Ceviche and Lychee Martini Ice Cream. The possibilities are endless, and Schnebly can’t wait to see their partners get creative with this year’s harvest at the Culinary Grand Tiki Lounge featuring StartUP FIU Food Mentors such as Half Moon Empanadas, Pro Kitchen Hub, My Ceviche, and Lulu’s Ice Cream, to name a few.

While guests enjoy the different variations of Lychee, they can also browse 200+ classic/modern Chevrolet Corvettes, custom cars, Jeeps, 4x4s and other classics throughout the day. The Lychee Summer Celebration Meet Up will be hosted by Corvettes & Coffee and Cecil’s Jeep Fam. Guests can also explore over 40+ artisan and craft vendors in the Artist Colony as they sculpt, sew and sand down hand-made goods. In addition, Live Painting Sessions will showcase some of the area’s best muralists using 40 ft. long shipping containers as their canvas.

At 5pm, the first Schnebly Family Mud Run will kick off, benefitting the American Cancer Society to fund cancer research. Participating runners will be given a glow necklace to display the Cancer they’ll be running for, while conquering an “all new” course compete with obstacles. While the five-kilometer course will honor the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners during an official ceremony before the fireworks, every runner will receive a medal to commemorate their run. All proceeds from the run will go to the American Cancer Society, and anyone who buys a ticket for the run will get free admission to the Lychee Summer Celebration; family members get special pricing on LSC tickets with Runner Registration.

Market Analysis
In industries from agriculture to environmental science, biotechnology plays an important role in improving industry standards, services, and developing new products. Biotechnology involves the spectrum of life science-based research companies working on transformative technologies for a wide range of industries.
The global biotechnology market is expected to reach USD 727.1 billion by 2025, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. The emergence of certain key themes in the biotechnology market is expected to drive growth in this industry to a lucrative extent.
The biotechnology sector in Spain continues growing year after year. To a large extent, this is due to its transversal character, because more and more companies from different sectors incorporate biotechnology activities to their products and services
There has been a growing increase of the turnover of biotechnology companies in the Spanish GDP. And that evolution has been constant, even in the years of the crisis. As evidence we have the values of 2014, year when that economic figure stood at 10.35%, and 2008, when biotechnology just supposed 2.98% of GDP. The value of 10.35% has even equalled digits of tourism in the country, one of the pillars of the Spanish economy.
This type of biotechnology comprises approximately 50% of all biotech companies in Spain. These companies are mainly engaged in products for human health, not only with regard to drugs, but also products and services related to molecular diagnostics, both to treat and to prevent disease.
Currently, Spain ranks as the second country with the highest number of biotechnology-related companies in the world, only behind the United States. In addition, Spain is leader in personalized medicine and in the development of innovative drugs for the treatment of cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, autoimmune and infectious diseases, ranking among the top ten European countries in drug development.

Verde
1103 Biscayne Blvd,
Miami, Florida 33132

Founded in 2017 by Co-Chairs Mayela Lanza and Jennifer Weinberg, Sustainable Supperclub is a pop-up dinner club where guests have the opportunity to dine on a plant-based meal comprised of food items which would generally go to waste. The mission is to raise awareness about how much food we waste that is consumable and can feed the less fortunate.

Sustainable Supperclub launches with its first dinner on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at 7PM. The event will take place at Verde, Pérez Art Museum Miami’s (PAMM) picturesque waterfront restaurant, in collaboration with Top Chef contestant and James Beard Award semi-finalist, Chef Janine Booth as well as Starr Catering and Hungry Harvest. Attendees will enjoy signature cocktails (provided by Rosé Piscine and Simple Vodka) and hors d’oeuvres while overlooking the bay before sitting down to a plant-based, family style dinner. Tickets are limited and are now available for purchase here ($125); Sustaining level members of PAMM will receive preferred pricing ($100). To become a member, visit pamm.org/support.

In fall of 2013, Chef Booth appeared on NBC/Bravo’s Emmy Award-winning television show, Top Chef cooking and competing against eighteen other chefs in New Orleans. While Booth didn’t make it to the end, she did redeem herself on Bravo’s Last Chance Kitchen beating out seven competitors and remaining at the top for another four weeks. In addition, Booth is a 2018 semi-finalist for a James Beard Award – Rising Star Chef of the Year – and has been recognized in publications including both Forbes’ and Zagat’s 30 Under 30 awards. Chef Booth co-owns several restaurants from New York to Puerto Rico, with her partner, Top Chef Alum Jeff McInnis, including Stilltsville Fish Bar, the Miami concept in partnership with Grove Bay Hospitality Group. The Sunset Harbour eatery is inspired by the Gulf Coast’s boating and fishing scene, and both chefs’ passion for simply prepared seafood. Their restaurants offer unique dishes with innovative techniques and flavor forward local ingredients.

While jazz, and especially Latin jazz, are still growing and evolving musical genres, they have also both been around long enough that there are some giants of these sounds who still walk among us, true living legends. Eddie Palmieri is one of these, a bandleader, arranger and composer who has been named by the National Endowment for the Arts as an official “Jazz Master.” And lucky for Miami, he is bringing his sextet with him, as part of his 80th birthday year tour, to downtown’s own icon, the Olympia Theater, on Saturday, June 2, for a blowout musical event, in partnership with The Rhythm Foundation. This is a celebration of Palmieri’s continuing creativity and the release of his newest album, Sabiduría. His music has won multiple awards, including ten Grammys, his NEA “Jazz Master” honor, a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, and many others. He has worked with a who’s who in Latin and jazz music, including Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner as well as his older brother, Charlie Palmieri, to name just a few. Recently, “placemaking” has become a buzzword among policy makers, foundations, and community activists. As public institutions reduce their involvement in the arts, culture, and education, private stakeholders have stepped in to address communities’ needs for inclusive public spaces. These spaces, ranging from small children playgrounds to entire arts districts, are ideally conceived in dialogue among communities, public policy agents, interested businesses and non-profits, and others. This panel will discuss how to activate “creative placemaking” initiatives, and how to balance communities’ mobilization (or lack thereof), the top-down approaches of policy-makers, and the profit drives of urban developers.
Panelists: Dr. Ann Markusen (University of Minnesota), Victoria Rogers (Knight Foundation), Roberto Rovira (Florida International University).
Moderator: Dr. Ariana Hernandez-Reguant (Tulane University)

For more than thirty years, Miami-based artist Karen Rifas has amassed a body of work that endeavors to understand and re-imagine space. Well known for her minimal cord and leaf installations, and precise, methodical line drawings, in 2016, Rifas began a focused exploration into the constructive possibilities of color. Employing densely hued shapes and irregular lines, Rifas creates spaces that oscillate between the two- and three-dimensional. Deceptive Constructions surveys this recent body of work for the artist’s first solo museum exhibition in over 10 years. Through variegated floor and sculptural installations, works on paper, and wood panel, Rifas uses a concise language of richly contrasted color to alter our perception of space.

The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) will present the group exhibition “Monarchs: Brown and Native Contemporary Artists in the Path of the Butterfly” from May 24 – Aug. 5, 2018. Curated by Risa Puleo, the exhibition features the works of 37 artists who are native to the Americas separated into conceptual categories including indigenous, immigrant and assimilated.

The exhibition focuses on the monarch, the only butterfly that migrates in two directions, as a geographic range and a metaphor. Monarchs (specifically those of eastern North American) fly from southern Canada through the Midwest on their way to Michoacán, Mexico and back.

This survey of artists from or living in the path of the monarch, brings to life the Dakota Access Pipeline and the call to build a wall in Mexico as unrelenting issues that create challenges for people native to the Americas — being separated by conceptual categories of indigenous, immigrant, and assimilated.

Like the butterfly, which takes at least four generations to completely navigate its way through middle America with inherited knowledge, these artists also use inherited cultural memory to showcase and explore historical narratives of their respective heritage through abstract techniques.

Artists incorporate processes such as basket weaving, beadwork, copper hammering, and quilting, and materials such as stucco, plaster, ceramics, and feathers, that hold a high degree of resonance within native, immigrant, and brown aesthetics and vernacular cultures. The exhibition also charts the movement of styles and approaches through large spans of time across the Americas, speaking to an inherited means of production and genealogy of form.

William Cordova, a nationally respected Miami-based artist, is one of the artists featured in the exhibition. Other artists include Gina Adams, Carmen Argote, Natalie Ball, Margarita Cabrera, Juan William Chávez, Rafa Esparza, Nancy Friedemann-Sánchez, Guillermo Galindo, Jeffrey Gibson, Sky Hopinka, Donna Huanca, Truman Lowe, Ivan LOZANO, Cannupa Hanska Luger and Marty Two Bulls, Jr, Salvador Jiménez-Flores, Nicholas Galanin and Merritt Johnson, Rodolfo Marron III, Harold Mendez, Mark Menjivar, Ronny Quevedo, Gonzalo Reyes Rodriguez, Josh Rios andAnthony Romero, Guadalupe Rosales, Carlos Rosales-Silva, Francisco Souto, Rodrigo Valenzuela, Mary Valverde, Dyani White Hawk, Nathan Young, and Sarah Zapata.

Admission to MOCA is $5, free for MOCA members and North Miami residents. An artist reception will take place on Thursday, June 14, 2018 with an admission cost of $10 to the general public, free to MOCA members and North Miami residents.

To complement its monthly entertainment music schedule, L Bar launched an updated cocktail menu earlier this year featuring nine unique offerings. The menu has been divided into: Culinary Influenced, Classics and Not So Classic. Menu highlights include the Culinary Influenced Bacon & Eggs featuring bacon-infused Buffalo Trace Bourbon, egg white, fresh lemon, honey and black pepper. New Classics include Dark n’ Stormy – a Bermuda classic, made with Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum instead of the traditional Gosling’s Rum. The latest addition to L Bar’s Not So Classic offerings is the Hibiscus Punch made with Flor de Caña Rum, fresh lemon, hibiscus syrup, pineapple and raspberries.

For those looking for a refreshing spirit-free drink, creative offerings remain on the menu including the Blood Orange Cooler with blood orange, lime, agave, soda water, and mint; Grape Rosemary Smash with green grapes, honey, simple syrup-infused rosemary, lime and soda water, topped with rosemary sprigs; and Watermelon Cilantro Fresca with watermelon chunks, cilantro, lime, agave, simple syrup, soda water and a pinch of salt.

Ballet Flamenco La Rosa Presents Verano y Humo, an original Flamenco Ballet inspired by Tennessee Williams’ Summer and Smoke 6/10/18

Ballet Flamenco La Rosa Presents Verano y Humo, an original Flamenco Ballet inspired by Tennessee Williams’ Summer and Smoke
Sunday, 06/10/2018 – 03:00 pm – 05:00 pm
Colony Theatre
1040 Lincoln Rd,
Miami Beach, Florida 33139
Website
Cost: In advance: VIP $35, General Admission $25; Students & Seniors $20. Prices increase at the door.

The original and groundbreaking Flamenco work, Verano y Humo, by Ballet Flamenco La Rosa’s Artistic Director Ilisa Rosal, is an international collaboration with stellar guest artists from Spain. Inspired by Tennessee Williams’ Summer and Smoke, this is a not to be missed experience, as a great American play is interpreted in the language of Flamenco. With two vivid main characters that are polar opposites, the stage is set for drama. The principal themes of intense love and desire along with resulting loneliness and despair, make this work a challenge yet a perfect fit for Flamenco’s compelling arsenal of physical and emotional expression. There is ample opportunity for Flamenco’s passion and force as well as the nuance and delicacy that it embodies at the same time. In the masterful hands of the dancers, musicians, choreographers and director that will collaborate to create Verano y Humo, Tennessee Williams’ master work finds a new and compelling interpretation.

Both exhibits will be on display from Saturday, June 2, 2018 through Saturday, August 25, 2018.

Francie Bishop Good: “Comus”Good and her mother graduated from the same high school in Allentown, Pennsylvania. After reflecting on photographs in her mother’s “Comus” yearbook, comparing them to those is her yearbook, she used her interpretations as a limitless source of material for this series. Good cross-pollinates painting, photography, drawing and collage with digital layering to create portraits in a series that is a staccato of media and a hybrid form of portraiture. In “Comus,” Good transforms high school yearbook pictures to a new reality.

Dana Donaty: “Profoundly Playful – A Survey of Work”Widely recognized for her provocative canvases with unusual narrative, Donaty’s unmistakable satirical lexicon is a perfect collision of reality and fantasy, psychological flirtation and a super-charged palette that is like a party about to get thoroughly out of control.

Forever Broward: “ForEver Glades – en plein air”The Coral Springs Museum of Art, in partnership with the Community Foundation of Broward, takes a look at life west of Interstate 95 with a delightful collection of paintings created en plein air (painted outdoors) on the edge of the Everglades at Markham Park. The “west meets east” program continues throughout the season with lectures and art in public places.

Innov Gnawa is a young musical collective dedicated to exploring Morocco’s venerable gnawa music tradition in the heart of New York City. Formed in the summer of 2014 by Moroccan expat Samir LanGus, the group draws on the considerable talents and expertise of Hassan Ben Jaafer, a Maâlem, or master gnawa musician, originally from Fes, Morocco.

Gnawa music is the ritual trance music of Morocco’s black communities, originally descended from slaves and soldiers once brought to Morocco from Northern Mali and Mauritania. Often called “The Moroccan Blues”, gnawa music has a raw, hypnotic power that’s fascinated outsiders as diverse as writer/composer Paul Bowles, jazz giant Randy Weston, rock god Jimi Hendrix, and the contemporary artist Bonobo. The music is utterly singular, played on an array of unique instruments — from the lute-like sintir that the Maâlem uses to call the tune, to the metal qarqaba (castinets) with which the kouyos (chorus) keep time and pound out clattering, hypnotic rhythms.

In 2018, this annual series returns in collaboration with Miami Dade College’s MDC Live Arts. It invites audiences into a meditative space through instrumental, traditional and innovative sounds from the Middle East. With support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge and the Doris Duke Foundation, The Rhythm Foundation and MDC Live Arts create an opportunity to build a connection with cultures primarily in the public eye for conflict zones. Victoria Rogers, Vice President of Arts for Knight Foundation, said: “Few things can bring people together like the arts. Events like this series are a great prism for exploring our and other cultures, and for finding the threads that unite us all.”

In an immersive environment, the audience surrounds performers in an in-the-round stage setup. The evening also features culture-specific, traditional snacks and sweets to engage the audience in a multi-sensory experience.
