Photographs of Art Miami on 12/4/10

Art Miami in Midtown Miami on Saturday, December 4, 2010.  This has got to be one of my favorite shows in the past and it did not disappoint me this year.  I saw such amazing art at this fair, I think this year might just be better than last year.

Art Miami showcases the best in modern and contemporary art from 100 international art galleries and prominent art institutions.Art Miami, Miami’s longest running contemporary art fair, once again electrify the city from December 1 – December 5, 2010. Art Basel Day 5: Pool Art Fair, another great fair in a hotel By Betty Alvarez

The sixth edition of the Pool Art Fair went underway at the Carlton Hotel. It is the only exhibition to present great, unprecedented artists during Art Basel Miami Beach.

The simple, modest approach of the Pool Art Fair offered an exciting alternative to the “Art Fair” experience for dealers and collectors as well as the general public. Pool’s purpose is to create a meeting ground for outstanding artists, primarily those who do not yet have gallery representation. The organization is committed to present to the world talented artists that do not yet have representation. This fair offered artists the opportunity to be part of the unique and important cultural environment that manifests during Art Basel Miami Beach. It was also the opportunity for gallery owners, curators, and other art enthusiasts to discover artists that are not shown in the other art fairs.

Exhibiting artists use the hotel guest rooms to display their work creating a unique and personal setting. They shared their most recent works with the public.

Photographs of Art Basel in Wynwood on 12/3/10

Art Basel in Wynwood on Friday, December 3, 2010.  First we went to Miami’s Independent Thinkers Art Basel 2010 Satellite Fair at Casa Wynwood and I have to say this is an awesome fair,  you guys have really out done yourself this year.  The art is amazing and they had The State of playing live (one of my favorite bands).  Second we went to Art’s for a Better World After Hours at SAPAL Soho Studios. Then we walked to Cafeina but on the way we stopped and had a AWESOME hot dog from Doggi Style on the street, one of the best hot dogs ever.  We made it to Cafeina for Artful Big Top, a beautiful crowd and great art.

Art Basel Day 3: Aqua Art Miami

This year the fair returns to the Aqua Hotel in Miami Beach, where it was first launched in 2005. The boutique hotel was transformed into a hub for innovative contemporary art programming, represented by the 43 galleries exhibiting there this year.

After a break in 2009, during which the fair focused on its Wynwood location, this return to the original hotel venue where the fair first began in 2005 is welcomed by many.

Over the years, Aqua’s organizers Jaq Chartier and Dirk Park have made it their mission to promote progressive gelleries with strong emerging artist programs from the West Coast, as well as from the greater United States and abroad. This curatorial commitment is complemented by the unique art fair setting of a classic South Beach hotel with specious exhibition rooms that open onto a breezy, intimate courtyard. The surroundings have become a favorite gathering spot not only for relaxation during the busy Art Basel week, but also as a place to exchange and disseminate new contemporary art ideas. And with its close proximity to hte main Art Basel fair., Aqua Art Miami has consistently been ranked among the top satellite art events by collectors, artists, curators, critics and the art loving public alike.

The fair’s organizers are quite optimistic that with this year’s “return to form” and with the recent upswing of the art market, this will be one of the most successful incarnations of Aqua Art Miami during their six-year history of producing the event. Plus, it’s great to be back on the beach.

Art Basel Day 3: Zoom Art Fair-Wonderful Art with powerful messages by Betty Alvarez

ZOOM Contemporary Art Fair is a platform for exhibitions, curatorial focus, intellectual critique and dialogue. ZOOM has one goal in mind, to bring a fresh voice and perspective into the mainstream art circuit. That fresh voice is what inspired our inaugural exhibit; a comprehensive sample of the multifarious styles, media, and genres permeating the creative artistic practices of the Middle East and its diaspora. ZOOM brings their voice and spirit into the heart of the American contemporary art scene during the 2010 Art Basel Miami Beach.

It is not your average art fair. For starters, ZOOM’s selection committee is comprised of curators rather than gallerist’s. The fair presents a cohesive platform of exhibitions, performance art, and academic debate. ZOOM’s intimate scale of 20 exhibitions showcases artists represented by non-profits and galleries from eleven countries. Rather than separating the two according to their organizational structure, ZOOM creates a world where the non-profits and galleries can coexist and interact; effectively blurring the lines between the two practices and presenting a multifaceted visual dialogue which puts the spotlight on the artist. The result is a model that explores both the art market and conventional institutional critique, allowing a potential in further contribution to presentation and representation within the art fair forum.

ZOOM’s academic program which brings together notable international cultural and artistic representatives will address current issues through the lenses of institutions, historians, critics, art presenters and practitioners. Held at the neighboring Bass Museum of Art, Debates participants include William Wells, Founding director of Cairo’s Townhouse; Jessica Morgan, The Daskalopoulos Curator, International Art, Tate Modern; Francois Pouillon, Department Head of the History of Mediterranean Islamic Program at Ecole des Hautes Etudes Sociales; Livia Alexander, Executive Director of ArteEast; León Krempel, Curator, Haus der Kunst, Munich and internationally renowned artists Sara Rahbar and Ahmed Mater.

Also significant is that in its inaugural year, ZOOM would focus on contemporary Middle Eastern art. With the growing visibility of the Middle Eastern artists throughout the international art community and the art market alike, ZOOM aims to take a closer look at the diverse art trends currently pervading the region. Selecting artists and respective works for ZOOM, curators worked hard to highlight work which avoids re- creating an experience of “otherness” where artists from non-Western origins are usually coerced into being a mouthpiece for ethnographic illustrations. On the contrary, ZOOM’s playful theme of “the Clash of the icons?” seeks to deconstruct this notion encouraging the viewers to appreciate the art works on their artistic merit rather than through a neo-Orientalist umbrella of geo-cultural identity.

The representatives of ZOOM were so excited to bring a perspective to a city like Miami with its robust art collectors and county support that allows the necessary flexibility not easily found in places like New York City or London. Miami embraces the entrepreneurial spirit, which permeates art. It is this openness and enthusiasm of the local community that has cultivated the success of Art Basel in Miami Beach.

Photographs of FriendsWithYou Present Rainbow City with N.E.R.D on 12/2/10

Photographs of FriendsWithYou Present Rainbow City in the Design District on Thursday, December 2, 2010.  What an amazing event!!!  I love the big blow up sculptures and N.E.R.D. gave an amazing show.

FriendsWithYou Present Rainbow City in the Design District on Thursday, December 2, 2010. What an amazing show, I love the b FriendsWithYou is proud to present Rainbow City – a forty piece environmental installation addressing the potency of interaction, ritual, and play. Originally commissioned by Luminato Festival of the Arts in Toronto and inspired by Holi, a festival effectuated by Hindu followers throwing brightly colored water and powder at each other, FriendsWithYou presents a vibrant collection of mutable, air- filled sculptures. Fabricated from intensely colored and receptive materials, the installation encourages visitors to be active and explore, subsequently inventing their own ritual. The individual structures are simple, minimal forms that borrow aesthetics from toy- like geometry and design and tower over guests, as each element’s height ranges from ten to forty feet.

Aqua 10 at The Aqua Hotel on Wednesday, December 1, 2010.  This has always been on of my favorite fairs and it did not disappoint.  The art at this fair is amazing and so much fun.

Aqua Art Miami Returns To Its Original Roots! This year the fair returns to the Aqua Hotel in Miami Beach, where it was first launched in 2005.  Aqua Art Miami is pleased to announce its return to the fair’s original location – the Aqua Hotel in the heart of South Beach. During the first week in December, and running simultaneously with Art Basel Miami Beach, this boutique hotel will be transformed into a hub for innovative contemporary art programming, represented by the 43 galleries exhibiting there this year.

Photographs of Zoom Contemporary Art Fair at South Seas on 12/1/10

Zoom Contemporary Art Fair at the South Seas Hotel on Wednesday, December 1, 2010.  Now this was a way to start off the Art Basel week!!!!  This is an amazing fair, this is one you need to see.  This was their preview reception and they did it right, wonderful food (the crab cakes were the best) and Voli Vodka drinks (the espresso vanilla fusion was my favorite) and neither stop flowing thru the night.  The art was amazing and the dance and live art performances were just awesome.   I am going back to see it again.

ZOOM Contemporary Art Fair announces their inaugural event will showcase the multifarious styles, media, and genres permeating the burgeoning contemporary arts scene of the Middle East and its diaspora. ZOOM presents a cohesive perspective that uses exhibitions, educational programming, and curatorial input to foster an interconnected discourse. Exploring an unconventional framework, ZOOM’s Selection Committee is comprised of curators Sam Bardaouil (Art Reoriented) and Shamim M. Momin (Los Angeles Nomadic Division LAND, former Whitney Museum), who together with Director Angeliki Georgiou have produced an intimate collection of 20 exhibitions showcasing artists by non-profit organizations and galleries from 11 countries.

Art Basel Day 1: Sculpt Miami, an art fair you don’t want to miss! By Betty Alvarez

I almost missed Sculpt Miami but I am glad that I did not. A great event held at Kavachnina Contenporary. A great art gallery held in Wynwood. When I entered the gallery I was amazed of the art work that it brought. Rich in color, on one area of the gallery artworks in red decorated the walls Red is a powerful color but these artworks impacted the area. Other artworks by other artists decorated the gallery.

The fair showcases outstanding large scale indoor and outdoor sculptures by prominent modern artists from around the world. It focuses on the newest aesthetic tendencies in contemporary sculpture highlighting innovative techniques and the use of original materials. Sculpt Miami is the only art space completely dedicated to showcasing contemporary sculpture, making it a vital source for art lovers who wish to discover new developments in modern sculpturing.

A great way to start Art Basel week in Wynwood!

Rainbow City is an environmental installation addressing the potency of interaction, ritual, and play. Inspired by Holi, a festival effectuated by Hindu followers throwing brightly colored water and powder at each other, FriendsWithYou presents a vibrant collection of mutable, air-filled sculptures. The individual structures are simple, minimal forms, borrowing aesthetics from toy-like geometry and design, which tower over guests, as each element’s height ranges from ten to forty feet. By dwarfing the audience, the totemic pieces trigger a sense of reverence, similar to the visual objective of a monolithic monument. During interaction, the inflated sculptures “embrace” visitors, while repetitive sound elements further enhance the sensory experience. The overall installation creates a surreal landscape of psychedelic scenery intended to provoke a religious and childlike awareness, simultaneously. Rainbow City invites spectators to participate with a responsive environment, offering an opportunity to connect physically and psychologically with an energetic, yet ephemeral, setting.

The simple, modest approach of the PooL Art Fair offers an exciting alternative to the “Art Fair” experience for dealers and collectors as well as the general public. PooL’s purpose is to create a meeting ground for outstanding artists, primarily those who do not yet have gallery representation. Finally, artists are able to sell works while expanding their network as well as receiving invitations to exhibit or create site-specific works.

Special guest : Zulema Griffin
Zulema Griffin of Deux Conceptualiste Noir
Projected Movement 1, 2010
Single-Channel Video; 5:30 shown on Four Plasma screens in lobby
Deux Conceptualiste Noir invites Kenya (Robinson) to wear their designs, pose and walk around parts of New York City, partly associated with established worlds of finance and European culture, such as Wall Street and Lincoln Center. The performance is inspired by Frantz Fanon’s seminal work Black Skin,White Masks that scrutinizes the psychological impact of blackness in predominantly white cultures. The work therefore suggests a critical reading of the feelings of dependency and inadequacy through fashion and body language.

Outlaw will be in Miami at the PooL Art Fair with TAKE CARE, a group show of seven artists making work about biomedical ethics in the 21st Century. TAKE CARE is in Suite 119 at the Carlton Hotel. Kristina Arnold, Sher Fick, Jeanette May, Lindsay Obermeyer, Adrienne Outlaw, Libby Rowe, Sadie Ruben
Also Dec. 2 – 5 Adrienne Outlaw will distribute, free to the public, 100 limited edition Enhancer viewfinders in public locations throughout Miami. As part of a multi-phase artwork addressing the ethics of pharmacological neuroenhancement, Outlaw has distributed some 400 of these brain-shaped, viewfinders in such places as Bangkok, Sao Paulo, Santiago, Copenhagen, Berlin, Costa Rica, Atlanta, Nashville, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and now Miami.
Adrienne Outlaw grounds her interdisciplinary practice in a rigorous commitment to craft.
Her often interactive work is informed by ethical issues developing with the rapid advancement of biotechnology. She is the recipient of grants, awards, and fellowships from such places as the Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation, Tennessee Arts Commission, and the Virginia Center for Creative Arts.
As part of her practice, Outlaw also writes, curates and runs programs for artists. She holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MLAS from Vanderbilt University.

Invitational Art Fair has returned for its third edition. LITTLEST SISTER is a fragment of the explosive satellite art fair phenomena; exploring the “booth” as a venue to exhibit and sell art.

Since 2002, the glamorous art typhoon – Art Basel Miami Beach, takes place every December in sunny Florida. Located in Miami Beach, the international fair is the American “sister” event of Art Basel in Switzerland, the most important annual art show worldwide for the past 39 years. Eight years later, the effects of Art Basel Miami Beach spawned 20+ “satellite” art fairs throughout Miami, housing 1100+ galleries and alternative spaces from around the world.

If you’re looking to find small diamonds in the rough, look no further. Art Basel Miami Beach finds her baby sibling at Spinello Gallery. LITTLEST SISTER is the Design District’s only art fair, across the ocean from Art Basel, Design Miami, and NADA, and coinciding with Art Miami, Pulse, and Scope.

The art fair consists of 8 booths, all 4′ x 8′ in size. The scaled down booths uniquely house over 40 of today’s most provocative artists ranging from unknown artists, up-and-coming art stars, to seasoned veterans, curated by Art Fair Founder Anthony Spinello.

This year LITTLEST SISTER will house a VIP Project Room featuring a solo project, “Observations,” by master painter Marc Dennis. Dennis’ hypernaturalistic, highly detailed and obsessively delineated paintings address the changing relationship between natural and unnatural phenomena. In this show he explores the subversive potential of beauty, referencing traditional still life painting while distilling something otherworldly from within nature’s beneficence. The VIP Project Room will be conveniently dressed with an extensive selection of art publications and Cafe, ideal to converge, lounge, and unwind.

The Littlest Sculpture Project, a new highlight, will deck the halls with innovative sculptures that accentuate the fair’s overall concept. Works by: Pablo Cano, Eric Doeringer, and Pachi Giustinian.

Art Miami showcases the best in modern and contemporary art from 100 international art galleries and prominent art institutions.

Art Miami, Miami’s longest running contemporary art fair, will once again electrify the city from December 1 – December 5, 2010. As the anchor art fair to the city of Miami, the fair will return with a compelling array of modern and contemporary artwork from over 100 international galleries and prominent art institutions. Art Miami will be held in a state-of-the-art 100,000 square foot pavilion in Midtown Miami’s burgeoning Wynwood Arts District.

Now in its 21st year, Art Miami will kick off Art Week with its opening night on Tuesday, November 30, 2010. Art Miami’s highly anticipated Opening Night VIP Preview will benefit The Lotus House Women’s Shelter, a quiet enclave in downtown Miami that offers a sanctuary for homeless women and infants in need. The exclusive evening is the first opportunity for VIP collectors to acquire some of the finest pieces of modern and contemporary art from the 20th and 21st centuries while also raising money for an important cause. Last year, Art Miami’s Opening Night Preview attracted over 6,500 international collectors, philanthropists, museum professionals, curators and journalists.

With over 100 prestigious international galleries participating, Art Miami is a “can’t miss” event for serious collectors, museum professionals, curators and art enthusiasts. Exhibitions at the fair will include modern and contemporary paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography and prints from Europe, Asia, Latin America, India, the Middle East and the United States. Distinguished for its depth, diversity and quality, Art Miami maintains a preeminent position in America’s contemporary art fair market.

“As Miami’s anchor fair, we have maintained the reputation as an unrivalled venue for acquiring innovative contemporary and modern art. We provide a platform for both seasoned and emerging galleries to showcase their artists. Art Miami is different in its approach—it is a fair that represents an overall cross section of the contemporary art market. The diverse range of disciplines and price-points provides a unique opportunity to collectors, at all levels, to explore their interest in both primary and secondary works of art. The depth and quality of works for sale at Art Miami, coupled with the relaxed ambience and elegant design of our pavilion, creates a welcoming and enjoyable experience for our visitors and exhibitors alike,” said Nick Korniloff, Director of Art Miami.

Kaj Forsblom, owner and Director of Galerie Forsblom, one of Scandinavia’s leading international galleries, said: “Art Miami has long since been an important mainstay in Miami’s cultural and artistic community. Particularly in the last few years, Art Miami has proven itself as one of America’s top fairs with its dedication to continuous growth and improvement. We are looking forward to returning to an even greater Art Miami with stronger galleries, more collectors, and a truly professional show management.”

Always seeking to enhance the experience of the fair for its attendees, Art Miami will host a series of compelling lectures and panel discussions with some of the leading voices from the international art scene. In addition, visitors can look forward to art projects curated by the esteemed Julia Draganovic. The curated projects include indoor and outdoor exhibitions, as well as Art Video and New Media installations on loan for exhibition from prominent institutions and private collections.

VERGE emerging art fair is proud to announce a stellar list of exhibitors showing living artists (isn’t that what “emerging” used to mean?) for its return to Miami Beach, coinciding and located only two blocks from Art Basel Miami Beach and the newly relocated Design / Miami. For its first year under Fair Director Maria Jenson, Verge will once again raise the bar for real luxury and comfort of the art viewing experience for attendees. Tired of eating out of trucks or cold sandwich cafe food? Verge Miami has you covered. A popular spot for collectors and attendees, VERGE offers 5-star dining options at the Catalina’s Kung Fu Sushi and Maxine Restaurants. Just drinks? Never fear–no overpriced $12 bottle drinks at VERGE! Join us at hotspot The Red Bar at the Catalina for daily FREE cocktail mixers at its famous Happy Hour from 7-8pm. Yes, free drinks every day!

“VERGE consistently breaks the mold, providing the vision to introduce new artists that are quickly scooped up by a market famished for new direction.” says Director Maria Jenson. How many artists now commanding high prices got their start at VERGE? Droves. And there’s no question as to why. Save yourself the trading floor frustrations, skip the others and find tomorrow’s stars at VERGE today before the run to cash in on their newfound popularity after their VERGE premier.

This year, VERGE welcomes back another impressive list of popular regular exhibitors, including ANTIDOTE curatorial collective from Brooklyn, New York, Rush Arts/Corridor Gallery, New York, New York, The Fashion Institute of Technology/Fine Arts Dept., New York, New York, Projects Gallery, Philadelphia, PA, the ever-keen eye of Sara Nightingale Gallery, Shelter Island, New York, the always-provocative work of Van Uxem Projects, New York, NY, and a room of whimsy by HD Studios and the fantastic Hollye Davidson of hometown Miami, Florida. RUSSELL/PROJECTS of Richmond, Virginia will present Drawing Show works by art star Peregrine Honig, of Bravo Channel’s famous “Work of Art” artists reality show. Newcomers this year include Miami galleries including Artformz, presenting a special “Small Works” show of works under fifteen inches square, and the robust program of newly opened Art Modern Gallery, presenting not one, but two rooms of new and emerging art, and Hot Commodities, presenting the work of over a dozen local Miami and New York artists. International galleries from around the world are rolling out spectacular exhibitions for VERGE attendees, including Black And, an emerging gallery from Holywell Bay, United Kingdom, presenting a special video project also showing at MANIFESTA 5, the G2 Gallery of Tokyo, Japan, Amsterdam’s Kahmann Gallery, and Fredrik Strømsæther Projects of Paris, France. Rounding out the VERGE showcase this year is Team Art! of Chicago, Illinois, Olga Papkovitch Projects, New York, New York, Vital at Verge, New York, New York, Pure Luck, Brooklyn, New York, New York, New York’s US+U., and What It Is Gallery, hailing from the Oak Park outskirts of the city of Chicago, Illinois, and Scotch Projects from New York’s Lower East Side.

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL AT VERGE
Once again, breaking the mold. VERGE will serve as the center of the Cirque du Soleil on Miami Beach at its Opening Night Preview Reception with amazing live performances on location to wow attendees, with everything from contortionists (by a two-time Russian Gold Medalist), sky jumpstilt walkers, jugglers, Cerceax acts and more! THE DRAWING SHOW
Continuing in the effort to advance the interests of unique approaches to the current state of visual art, Verge is proud to announce its commitment to mounting a section devoted exclusively to drawing as a medium that overlaps all disciplines. The Drawing Show will present drawing as a unique artistic practice, one that is universally accessible, and often the first step in an artist’s exercise of ideas that inform both their larger creative practice and the cultivation of new forms of visual art.

As a touchstone to the evolutions influenced by and visited upon artistic practice by the art marketplace and its requisite economic fluxuations, drawing continues to serve as a subversive force, both in its delineation of artistic ideas as well as in its potential to inspire and serve as the first step in production unrestrained by economic categories.

EMERGING LATIN ART
Recognizing the unique cultural environment of Miami as a gateway to South America, Verge will offer a speial section devoted to a survey of the best in emerging Latin art. As a constantly growing demographic within the United States, developments within Latin art can no longer be ignored without consequence to the state of visual art as a whole. This platform is a surprisingly overlooked devotion to the subject not represented anywhere else in the Miami art fair marketplace. By offering a section devoted to the exploration of new trends and ideas surround emerging Latin art, Verge is poised to act at the forefront of an otherwise underserved and underrepresented realm of artistic production.

COLLECTIVES & PROJECTS
Since the onset of the Recession, a growing movement among artists has taken hold to organize into collective and artistic groups who have taken charge of their own reception in the public sphere. These groups often operate at the fringes of commercial centers, in places remote from and yet accessible to traditional commercial centers. This has translated in the realm of emerging art as a unique approach to participation in the art marketplace. Freed from the constraints of previous decades’ definition of collectives as anti-capital or even hybridized independent approaches to their own public reception, these groups have evolved into saavy operators capable of fully delivering on the needs of their own self-interests. Verge is invested in providing an alternative platform for these groups and their projects.

Aqua Art Miami is pleased to announce its return to the fair’s original location – the Aqua Hotel in the heart of South Beach. During the frst week in December, and running simultaneously with Art Basel Miami Beach, this boutique hotel will be trans- formed into a hub for innovative contemporary art programming, represented by the 43 galleries exhibiting there this year.

After a break in 2009, during which the fair focused on its Wynwood location, this return to the original hotel venue where the fair frst began in 2005 is welcomed by many. “We are thrilled to be a part of Aqua’s comeback to South Beach, as it’s certainly one of the best hotel fairs in the U.S., if not internationally,” boasts an enthusiastic Kathy Murphy, publisher of Modern Painters magazine, who are sponsoring Aqua’s Preview Opening on the evening of December 1st.

Over the years, Aqua’s organizers Jaq Chartier and Dirk Park have made it their mission to promote progressive galleries with strong emerging artist programs from the West Coast, as well as from the greater United States and abroad. This curatorial commitment is complemented by the unique art fair setting of a classic South Beach hotel with spacious exhibition rooms that open onto a breezy, intimate courtyard. The surroundings have become a favorite gathering spot not only for relaxation during the busy Art Basel week, but also as a place to exchange and disseminate new contemporary art ideas. And with its close proximity to the main Art Basel fair, Aqua Art Miami has consistently been ranked among the top satellite art events by collectors, artists, curators, critics and the art loving public alike.

Throughout its tenure, a number of new galleries have made their Miami art fair debuts at Aqua. This year is no exception with Walker Contemporary from Boston and Nudashank from Baltimore, among the newcomers. The fair is also thrilled to welcome back many of its veterans, including Seattle’s Platform Gallery, Gregory Lind Gallery & Eleanor Harwood Gallery from San Francisco, PDX from Portland, and Philip Slein Gallery from St. Louis. Local Miami art dealers are represented by Harold Golen and Cancio Contemporary, while our Canadian neighbors to the north have dispatched Birch Libralato and Katharine Mulherin Contemporary of Toronto, as well as Montreal’s Pierre-François Ouellette Art Contemporain.

The fair’s organizers are quite optimistic that with this year’s “return to form” and with the recent upswing of the art market, this will be one of the most successful incarnations of Aqua Art Miami during their six-year history of producing the event. Plus it’s great to be “back to the beach”.

45 Renowned International And Local Artists Exhibit 400+ Works Alongside Installations By Keynote Charities

Award-Winning War Photographers Expose Remnants Of War; Kids Give Hope On World Aids Day And For Cancer Survivors

Arts For A Better World (“AFABW”) is launching its inaugural edition December 1 to 5, 2010 during Art Basel Miami Beach by taking significant steps away from the typical art fair paradigm. The elegantly designed 40,000-square-foot space will showcase 45 artists with more than 400 works, representing 13 countries. A unique partnership with four keynote charities — Save the Children, Water.org, American Red Cross and American Cancer Society — lends access to artistic presentations, such as drawings by kids undergoing cancer treatment, shown alongside acclaimed professional artists. The egalitarian approach in which the curators designed the show reinforces its collective message, and in addition to receiving proceeds from their artwork sales, partner charities will benefit from 5% of sales generated by the entire venture.

The VIP and Press Preview of AFABW is slated for Tuesday, November 30 at 6:00 p.m. (by invitation only), and the Opening Celebration, which begins at 7:30 p.m. on the same date, will be open to the public by RSVP at www.ArtsForABetterWorld.com/opening. AFABW is located at Soho Studios at NW 22nd Street at 1st Avenue, Wynwood Arts District, and will be on view December 1 to 3 from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Saturday, December 4 from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and Sunday, December 5 (Family Day) from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information please call 754.423.3226 or visit the website at www.artsforabetterworld.com.

Artist Highlights
Setting the tone for ARTS FOR A BETTER WORLD is the 672-square-foot black-cloaked pavilion situated at the show’s entrance, where environmental activist Joe Zammit-Lucia will share “Expression, Personality, Emotion.” This touring collection of animal photography portraits is presented in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (www.icun.org), landing in Miami after its debut at the Palais des Nations – the United Nations’ European headquarters – in Geneva, Switzerland. With powerful photographs of endangered species, the artist investigates issues related to animal individuality and the human-animal rapport.

Hailing from Nigeria via New York, Osi Audu will display “I have a landscape in my head,” a diptych series. With pencil, yarn, wood and plastic toys, his minimalist yet poignant sculptural installations explore myth and science. Audu invites audiences to reflect on the ways in which they identify with his work, and by extension, how and what they interpret as art.

South African mixed media artist Janet Slom joins AFABW with a series of large- and small-scale works born from the rhythms of life and nature. Receiving international recognition with exhibitions at Lincoln Center (NY), Adelson Gallery (NY) and Everard Read Gallery (Cape Town, South Africa), her focus is on the creative process or “reverberations” and energy inspired by the Universe.

Similarly, nationally acclaimed photographer Larry Silver cares more about his process than the subject matter. By manipulating light, chemistry, pigments and stains in the dark room, his imagery alludes to landscape and natural elements. Silver’s departure from the recognizable subjects suggests his will to move people with the dynamics – a feeling – in his pictures.

Brandon Opalka, breakout artist of Miami’s contemporary art scene, joins this initiative in offering a new view of familiar objects. Opalka’s landmark mural in Wynwood depicts a tree on its side, representative of an eco-system in distress. For AFABW, the artist instead takes a bubbling, prophetic approach in painting, and creates an illusion in which the viewer can believe he has seen a new, real place in his series of amoeba-like shapes with vibrant colors on canvas.

The Charities
A crossover initiative that brings together the commercial world of art and the non-profit community, these professional works will be exhibited adjacent to the artistic initiatives of partner charities Save the Children, Water.org, American Red Cross and American Cancer Society.

In commemoration of World Aids Day on December 1, which coincides with AFABW’s opening, Save the Children will present art by youth in Mozambique and around the world. This charity’s Healing and Education through Art (“HEART“) program uses the arts to promote children’s development and well-being, and is targeted at those living in countries and communities affected by conflict, violence, HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty. Further attesting to the therapeutic effects of arts education, American Cancer Society will feature drawings, paintings and sketches created by the young campers of its Reaching Out to Cancer Kids (“R.O.C.K.”) summer program.

Inspiration eclipses tragedy, as AFABW with American Red Cross bring the International Committee of Red Cross’ (“ICRC”) roving exhibit to Miami, making its Florida debut during Art Basel Miami Beach. This series was created in conjunction with VII photo agency to capture the individual stories of loss and suffering in war by award-winning war photographers James Nachtwey, Franco Pagetti, Antonin Kratochvil, Ron Haviv and Christopher Morris. Sending them to eight countries that were either at war or living through its aftermath – Afghanistan, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Georgia, Lebanon, Liberia, Haiti and the Philippines – their arresting images expose the remnants of armed conflicts and other situations of violence, while touching upon ideals of hope, redemption and progress. Additional information about Water.org’s project to be announced.

Arts For A Better World’s transformational message is akin to why the curators selected art that offers a new lens into understanding contemporary issues and action. Dubbed “the show that wants to change the world” by co-founders Rod and Sandrine Kukurudz and associate curator Ilana Vardy, AFABW will also be offering workshops, interactive projects and a Family Day on Sunday, December 5 to ensure the show is both conceptually and physically accessible to Miami residents and visitors.

Additional participating artists include: Jorge Aramburu; Philippe Arnoux (15000watts); David Benainous; David Benoliel; David Bismuth; Henry Bismuth; Ruddy Candillon; Cartooch (15000watts); Wang Chuan; Bruce Colin; Xavier Cortada; Charlelie Couture; Natasha Duwin; Meme Ferre; Jaime Gil; Laurent Harari; Henri Kalama; Francesca Lalanne; Gizou Lamothe; Lika; Miguel Lombardo (15000watts); Filemon Lopez; Jules Lusson; Francis Mampuya; German Matos; Marcus; Marie-Louise Fouchard; Luisa Mesa; Deborah Mitchell; Venessa Monokian; Noel Morera (15000watts); Hugo Moro; Ross Power; Asser Saint-Val; Luis Salazar; Ellen Sandor (15000watts); Olga Sinclair; Jerome Soimaud; Gerry Stecca and Martha Zuik.

Arts For A Better World was founded in 2009 with the ambitious mission to explore whether art can heal the world. Designed as a thought-provoking, curated experience that features the works of visual artists worldwide, the common thread that unites all participants, partners and sponsors is the shared desire to contribute to a better world for future generations. AFABW is not a charity, and will be donating 5% of total artwork sales to Save the Children, American Red Cross, American Cancer Society and Water.org. Please call 754.423.3226 or visit the website for more information at www.artsforabetterworld.com.

Art Asia, the premier international Asian contemporary art fair is returning to Miami for its third edition. Moving from the Wynwood Art District back to its original location in Midtown Miami, the fair will be held from December 1-5 with a vernissage on November 30.

Art Asia was created in 2008 as the first fair in Miami dedicated to Asian contemporary art. Focusing on education programs, Art Asia brought speakers such as Jerome Sans, Alexandra Munroe, Alexandra Wang, Wu Hung, Melissa Chiu, and Vishakha Desai to the fair. In 2009, the fair returned with Leeza Ahmady, independent curator and director of Asian Contemporary Art Week. With Ahmady, Art Asia launched the exhibition Truly Truthful, which showcased internationally recognized artists whose work contested categorical presentations of truth and reality in the world. In addition, Art Asia presented a film from Yi Zhou entitled THE EAR, featuring Pharrell Williams. In continuation with last year’s special programming, this year’s Art Asia is showcasing a new and exciting series of special projects titled Art Asia Presents, comprised of projects selected exclusively for Art Asia 2010.

Art Asia Co-founder Jeffrey Lawson says, “We are proud and excited to produce our 3rd edition of Art Asia Miami. The Miami community as well as the international community has been tremendously supportive and enabled our fair to continue to grow over the past 3 years.” Lawson adds, “This year’s fair has a very strong line-up, with a focus on the complete Diaspora of Asian contemporary art.”

With galleries participating from Asia, North America, Europe, and the Middle East, this year’s Art Asia Fair is continuing in the tradition of exploring the innovative dimensions of Asian contemporary art. In two exciting exhibitions of contemporary art from the Middle East—Staging Identity: Performance and Irony in Contemporary Iranian Photography and The Contemporary Arabesque—Galerie Kashya Hildebrand will be showcasing artists such as Gohar Dashti, Asad Faulwell, and Ahmad Moualla in this year’s fair. Art Asia is dedicated to widening the scope of Asian art and is particularly excited to provide a platform for this unique regional dialogue.

Art Asia Presents
In continuation with Art Asia’s critically acclaimed curatorial programming from 2009, we will present a series of special projects featured alongside the galleries. Through this new presentation, visitors will experience the creativity and talent of Asian contemporary artists working both inside and outside of Asia.

For the first time outside of The Guild Gallery, The Guild Co-Lab will be presenting a series of projects intending to foster research within a wide social construct. Co-Lab invites political, creative, educational and socially active groups to exercise ideas within a critically constructive atmosphere.

Feizi Gallery will be presenting Li Xin’s Ecstasy. This mixed-media installation depicts the life of a virtual human, engaging in visual and spiritual experiments in the form of 3-D simulation.

Galerie Kashya Hildebrand will be presenting Traverse by Messon Pae Yang. This large-scale installation will explore the convergence of technology, desire, and personal mythology into a thickly layered stratum of images and objects.

Art Whino is a DC based art gallery whose mission is to bring together the freshest and rawest talent from around the world. With over 1200 artists in the Art Whino arsenal, ranging from California to New York, Germany to Japan, and beyond, Art Whino has become an all encompassing force in the art world. Exhibitions cover the whole spectrum of new art forms ranging from exposing emerging stencil and wheat pasting artists to showcasing the most skilled leaders of many different genres.

Angry Woebots: Aaron Martin was born on the island Oahu 1977, Hawaii. Most of his childhood was spent growing up and moving from Southern California to Nevada before finally landing back into Hawaii during his Junior year in high school. In 1999 a car accident changed everything; this life-threatening experience inspired him to leave the island once again, this time to Seattle, Washington. Inspired by the rain and being indoors, he started playing around with different art mediums again. He then left back to Hawaii with a new perspective, Aaron had his first show in 2002 and has not stopped. He has showed in galleries up and down California, the east coast, and even in shows that have traveled from the U.S. to Hong Kong. His focal medium is acrylic paintings on wood and canvas. Using minimal colors and detailed character design, these paintings are usually comprised of stressed out emotional pandas. The pandas tend to represent the story of struggle. www.armyofsnipers.com

Brett Amory: Brett Amory was born June 25, 1975 in Portsmouth, Virginia. When he was 21, Amory moved to San Francisco to study motion pictures at the Academy of Arts. Soon after enrolling in school, Amory took his first drawing class and was introduced to his passion for the arts. Around the time Amory turned 24 he tried his hand in painting. In 2002, Amory switched his major to fine art and started his first body of work called “Waiting” a series of paintings about the anticipation of the next moment. Amory gathers his source material by taking pictures on the street of people waiting. He gravitates towards visible quirks and, by his own admission, a lot of his subjects are older.

Amory graduated from the Academy of Arts in 2005 and has shown his work all over the country. In 2006 Brett along with five other artists published a book called “Convergence” and had book signings in New York, Los Angeles, and at the SFMOMA in San Francisco. Amory currently works as a graphic designer at an environmental company in San Francisco and continues to show his work in galleries across the country. www.brettamory.com

Charlie Owens: Charlie Owens is a Chicago based mixed media artist, formerly from his original home of Atlanta, GA where he established himself and developed much of his talent. His work features a mixed media collage style, utilizing both graphic illustrations and fine art abstract techniques that produce an obvious distinct style. Using a variety of techniques to achieve this look including, but not limited, to screen printing, stenciling, wheat paste, and a wide range of acrylics, inks and oil stains. By combining his love of illustration and design, Charlie has made a name for himself with his stylized characters and over-sized murals that showcase the depth and dimension of his talent. www.charlieowens.com

Daryll Peirce: Focused on exploring the connectivity within humanity and its claims of control over social systems, habitat, nature, and future, Daryll Peirce’s artwork pendulates between the satiric and esoteric, optimistic and pessimistic, scientific and spiritual, bold and poetic. Grotesquely exaggerated human forms, arterial-botanic city organisms, and flowering interconnected urban clusters currently inhabit his psyche and spew into his work. On a more intimate level, his influences instinctively stem from past and current environs, travel, exploration, skateboarding, surfing, dreaming, philosophy, and interacting with all forms of the human animal with a focused lens on the social outcast. artderailed.com

David Flores: Well known within the urban arts community for his self-proclaimed “stained glass” style, David Flores is keeping busy in 2010 working with Kid Robot, XLarge, and other principal brands in the urban realm.
www.davidfloresart.com

Jim and Tina Darling: Jim Darling grew up in the sprawling suburbs of Dallas, Texas. Recklessness in his teenage years resulted in long spans of detention and grounding… Isolated hours proved beneficial in sprouting daydreams and his love for drawing and creating. Darling dove into fine art as a junior in high school and quickly saw the need to further his education. Leaving Texas he headed to Denver, where he received his BFA from Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design. Fresh out of school Jim co-founded an interactive design shop (Xylem Interactive). A few years later he would go out on his own in pursuit of his solo career as a fine artist & freelance creative. After living in Colorado for eight years Darling headed to Los Angeles to further his creative endeavors. Darling’s gallery work ranges from intricate ink drawings to layered wood work with illustrative painted skins. Outside, Jim expands his tool set by including found objects and materials. His subject matter lives between play and real. Large issues are often looked at in simplistic terms and are then juxtaposed by intense detail.

Tina Darling’s paintings are fluid and ethereal coupled with hand-cramping detail. Weaving together curvilinear line work, patterns & soft colors together into dreamy, detailed images, she gathers her inspiration from the natural world & the human condition. Quiet expressive energy and emotion are spoken with a soft hand, leaving the viewer to process through the filters of their own lives & experiences. www.jimdarling.com

Joe Iurato: Once upon a time Joe Iurato worked as a magazine editor in NYC, where he’d escape into the streets of SoHo during lunch break to explore the art and occasionally contribute some of his own. At the time, stenciling was more of an obsession than a passion. Like every other moment in Joe’s life when his desire to create art was challenged by a strong, “responsible” work ethic, the latter prevailed. But as fate would have it, the two worlds collided after Joe was laid off last year. While the economy fell to pieces and decent jobs were scarce to come by, Joe used every bit of his free time to let his art out and grow creatively. He now applies that same work ethic into developing his craft. While he’s usually found in his garage painting on reclaimed cabinet doors and scrap pieces of wood, he also enjoys painting in the street, where his work is tagged with the name :01. He doesn’t use it as a means to hide his identity – it serves as a reminder to him, and he hopes as a message to others, that it only takes one single second to decide you’re going to move forward, regardless of circumstance or struggle, and never look back.

Josh Taylor: JOSHUA TAYLOR was born in New Jersey and continued his downward trajectory in hellish locales in up-state New York and North Carolina before honing his art skills at Pratt Institute. Upon earning his degree, he traversed the country, from California to Vermont, pursuing his art career. His fine art has appeared in galleries in LA, NY, Europe, and the Philippines, and has also been featured in various publications worldwide. Taylor’s current body of work focuses on the history, myths and legends of his “Gastonian Multiverse”, an odd ancient doppleganger reality where the laws of physics and the very fabric of time and space are falling apart at the seams. He currently resides in Baltimore where he paints, pays for parking, and works on a series of graphic novels and web comics entitled Bird & Girl. www.joshtaylorart.net

Kelly Castillo: Kelly Castillo is an artist intertwined in the underground emerging artist scene in Southern California. Not only an urban contemporary artist, she is also a gallery owner, an arts Commissioner for the City or Anaheim and the owner of Dr. Sketchy’s anti art school: Anaheim Chapter. Castillo made her professional debut in 2009 as an artist and has since been featured in galleries throughout Southern California and on the East Coast. Her involvement with Dr. Sketchy’s Anti Art School is evident in her work. Mainly focusing on portraitures, she used bold lines to create an illustrative quality in her work using modern media techniques with like spray paint, marker and acrylic paint. Bold color and design juxtaposed with vintage subjects lends itself to a multidimensional audience in love with the old and inspired by the new. www.kellycastilloart.com

Peap: Peap, or Samapeap Tarr originally born and based artist from Auckland New Zealand now living and creating in Phnom Penh Cambodia is a person whose cultural background has influenced him to create his signature sinister yet tranquil works of art which has caught the attention of art lovers around the world and also gained respect from many of his art peers including legendary LA Graffiti Cholo style artist Chaz Bojorquez. Known primarily for his use of bold black ink and paints on a blank white medium including canvas and walls, his art exists in a world where lightness and darkness battle, yet coexist in the same breath to balance each other and contrast against each other. It represents the ups and downs of life, the yin and the yang, the ongoing war that ends up being waged on canvas or whatever medium his work lies on. samapeaptarr.blogspot.com

Peat Wollaeger: Peat Wollaeger (stenSOUL) Internationally known stencil artist infamous for his signature EYEZ , raw colorful characters
and stencil videos. (http://vimeo.com/peat/videos)

You may have seen Peat’s work at “Electric Windows” in NY, “Paint Louis Wall” in the STL, “The Mad Artists Tea Party” in LDN, “Horrorwood” in LA, “Hotel des Arts” in SF or “Primary Flight” in the MIA! If NOT…possibly on a street near you. www.stenSOUL.com

Remi Mead: Remi Mead calls Hawaii home, although she was born in Okinawa Japan and lived in Colorado Springs earlier in her life. The experiences of learning new culture and language while holding on to her Japanese roots provide the foundation and growth in her work. The memory of painting beside her mother, who is also an artist, has shaped her stylistic approach. Her work is shown internationally, with her last show in the Washington D.C.area at G40 Art Summit.

Ruben Ubiera: Ruben Ubiera is a Dominican neo-figurative artist, known for his strong use of the line, who has been drawing and painting ever since he had use of reason. Ruben paints and draws in a style considered by many as Pop-surrealism, but he prefers to call it urban-pop, since he has lived most of his life in the urban, populated areas and most of his inspiration is derived from the interactivity between man and his urban environment. www.urbanpopsoul.com

Scribe: Donald Ross also known as “scribe” is 34 years old and currently lives in Kansas City, Missouri of the United States. The animated, public murals by Scribe are readily recognizable in Midtown Kansas City and throughout different part of the United States, Canada and down into Mexico where he has both painted murals and had gallery shows. Scribe incorporates a menagerie of animal characters developed over many years representing a particular, self-referential trait that he inserts in various scenarios. Scribe intersperses personal iconography, biblical and fairytale references, animation and metaphor in works intended as contemporary parables for public audiences, hence the use of his artist name and persona. Through accessible idiom and image, Scribe incorporates humor and play in the conveyance of serious messages regarding personal integrity, attainment of knowledge, and adventure. graffart.eu/blog/2009/04/scribe-art-pack-2

Sue Works and HermLife! Like Batman and Robin, they speaks strictly in clipped, short, powerful expressions of wonderment written large in neon letters across a perpetually hazy backdrop of pop culture references and cheap beer.
They are a neo-absurdist, a post-soda-pop burp upon the scene who mixes and marries humor, intellectual hypochondria and classical thought.

Mary Spring: Mary Spring’s figures are at once both self portraits of the present and projections of internal hope for the future. Each representation depicts the panoptic range of mental, emotional and physical conditions experienced in a mere snapshot of time, enabling the observer to merge silently into the psyche of the artist.

From ultimate pleasure to unbearable sadness, each expression communicates the profound casualties of insight. The integration of medium and mechanics with design and spirit, lead to the paradoxical enlightenment and anguish portrayed at the moment each stroke is applied.

Self-realization emerges from the artist as the feminine heart, the kinesthetic demands of performance and dedication, and the consequential strength are unveiled in each expression. Pain synthesized into passion. Time united with eternity. www.maryspring.com

Tim Conlon: Tim Conlon is an artist known for large-scale murals, graffiti art, and works on canvas. Conlonʼs work has been featured in museums and galleries across the country, including the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Conlonʼs work has appeared in feature films, television ads, art books and magazines, custom clothing designs, and on large street billboard advertising. Conlon is also an animator, illustrator, web designer, and video editor. www.conoperative.com

New Director Cornell Dewitt Announces Initial List Of Galleries; Emphasizes Core Vision For Miami 2010

PULSE Contemporary Art Fair is proud to announce the exhibitors and programming for its 2010 Miami edition. The sixth edition of the fair – the first under new Director Cornell DeWitt – will offer a blend of 82 leading and emerging international galleries alongside the hallmark program of original cultural projects for which the fair is renowned. PULSE Miami 2010 will also introduce a new focus on the city and culture of Miami, and an unprecedented emphasis on the visitor experience, foremost through its exhibitors and programming, but also via new culinary partners and social opportunities.

“PULSE consistently achieves success by presenting a first class roster of galleries on a scale that is manageable, and in a setting that is comfortable. Our core exhibitors, who could show in any fair the world, recognize this and it keeps them coming back” DeWitt explained. Joining such long-running PULSE veterans as Conner Contemporary Art, Hilger Modern/Contemporary, and Yossi Milo Gallery, are a wealth of new exhibitors. Miami’s Gallery Diet will bring work by artist Christy Gast, who will have a solo exhibition at the De La Cruz Collection coinciding with the fair. Another newcomer is Galleri Maria Veie, a central figure in Oslo’s under-recognized contemporary art scene, bringing Jumana Manna to the IMPULSE section of solo artist booths. From New York comes Larissa Goldston Gallery, whose artists on view include the young American artist Orly Genger. For its garden area, PULSE Miami has commissioned Genger to create Beefcakes, a functional elaboration on prior installations by Genger, including her current
MASS MoCA installation Big Boss, in which a gigantic construction of woven climbing rope appears to explode through a wall into a colossal mass throughout the gallery space.

Schroeder Romero and Shredder – a new joint venture, bringing together Schroeder Romero Gallery and The Sienese Shredder – make their first appearance in an art fair, bringing Michael Waugh’s Decline and Fall (of a performance artist). Waugh will continuously read from The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire with no breaks during an eight hour long day at the fair. The performance is accompanied by a drawing inspired by the texts, on view in the gallery’s booth. Following last year’s acclaimed turn, the Austin, Texas collective OK Mountain will present Trailer, an ambitious new sculptural installation exploring the tradition of customized barbecue trailers, courtesy of New York’s Freight + Volume.

Several galleries come to PULSE Miami from points outside North America and Europe. Asian galleries include Silverlens Gallery from the Philippines, plus Ai Kowada Gallery and veteran exhibitor Megumi Ogita, both from Tokyo. A sizeable Latin American contingent will also be on view, represented by mainstay gallery Nina Menocal from Mexico City; Arróniz, also from Mexico City; and Bogota, Colombia’s Nueveochenta. San Juan, Puerto Rico’s RICA Gallery; and San José, Costa Rica’s Galería Bickar will exhibit in the IMPULSE section of curated solo-artist booths.

The Miami 2010 edition of the fair’s PULSE PLAY> video exhibition is curated by Tampa Museum of Art Executive Director Todd D. Smith. Titled Water on the Mind, works by Janaina Tschape, Janet Biggs and Johanna Billing channel a range of emotions – frustration, melancholy, and nostalgia, evoked by the recent Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

For the first time, the fair will open with a private evening preview on Tuesday, November 30, featuring a live musical performance hosted by the Friends of the New World Symphony. Also performed repeatedly over the course of the fair is WALL, a study in choreography by Shannon Gillen & Guests (see press kit/website for schedule). WALL imagines the human body as a magnetized form under pressure, irresistibly drawn to the length of a wall. Bodies will collide, levitate, and orbit this space, creating new relationships as they interact.

The PULSE Prize will be awarded to an exceptional emerging artist selected from the IMPULSE section of the fair by the PULSE Committee. The recipient will receive a $2,500 cash grant and the opportunity to design the limited-edition tote bag created for the next year’s fair. VIPs attending PULSE Miami 2010 will receive complimentary bags designed by last year’s PULSE Prize winner, OK Mountain. Other prior recipients include Eric Beltz, Chen Chien-Jen, Philip Gurrey, Chris Natrop, Emilio Chapela Perez, Duke Riley, and Travis Somerville.

To enhance the experience of our guests, PULSE Miami has commissioned a rotating program of food trucks from some of Miami’s favorite restaurants: the wildly popular Latin Burger; gourmet food truck pioneer Gastropod; Jefe’s Original, serving their signature fish tacos; and Yellow Submarine, purveyors of the finest Colombian fast food. Each day a different truck will be available to guests in the fair’s plaza – please see the schedule available on the next page. Finally, at the end of each day visitors are invited to reward themselves and partake in cocktails at the PULSE Bar, from 4pm to 7pm.

Design Miami/, the global forum for design, will present its sixth edition this December in a new location in Miami Beach. For the first time in the show’s history, the fair will be staged on Meridian Avenue and 19th Street, adjacent to Art Basel Miami Beach at the Miami Beach Convention Center. This year’s show will offer a more streamlined, seamless experience for the collectors, exhibitors, sponsors and general public that attend both fairs. Design Miami/ has commissioned Moorhead and Moorhead, an emerging, award-winning design studio, to create the show’s temporary structure for its new Miami Beach location. Details on this structure will be announced in the coming weeks.

“Presenting the show in Miami Beach will offer us a new context,” says Wava Carpenter, Acting Director of Design Miami/. “For the past five years, the Miami Design District provided us with a wonderfully creative and nurturing environment in which to grow our brand and the neighborhood will always be an integral part of the Design Miami/ identity. At the same time, we are tremendously excited by the opportunities a move to Miami Beach affords us in terms of evolving our show and making it more accessible to a wider audience.”

Craig Robins, Co-founder and Principal of Design Miami/ states: “The move to Miami Beach will create value for our collectors, exhibitors, sponsors, partners and those who come to take part in our events. The growth of both the Miami Design District and Design Miami/ in recent years has been extraordinary. This move to the Beach will allow the programming in the District to evolve and flourish, while creating an entirely new set of opportunities for Design Miami/.”

In his other role as Chief Executive Officer and President of Dacra, Robins is widely credited with having transformed both South Beach and the Miami Design District into world-renowned centers for cutting-edge art, design, food and fashion, making the fair’s move to Miami Beach especially significant for him.

In 2009, Design Miami/ Basel relocated to Hall 5, in the Messe complex that houses Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland. The response to the proximity from collectors, dealers, and sponsors was overwhelmingly positive, with the 2009 and 2010 Basel shows setting records for Design Miami/ in terms of sales and attendance. A similar response is expected for the move of the upcoming Miami show.

The sixth edition of Design Miami/, opening November 30, 2010, promises to be the most dynamic yet. An eclectic, international mix of participating galleries and bold cultural programming will be announced shortly. For further information, visit www.designmiami.com and www.designmiamiblog.com.

The Ninth Edition of the Most Prestigious Art Show in the Americas

From December 2 through 5, Miami Beach, Florida, will host the ninth edition of
Art Basel Miami Beach, the international art show. More than 250 leading galleries from North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa will take part, showing works by more than 2,000 artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

After launching last year, the Oceanfront exhibition area returns again to Art Basel Miami Beach 2010, sited in an environment designed by young architects Phu Hoang and Rachely Rotem. The Oceanfront Nights program, curated by Creative Time, spotlights the cultural scenes of Berlin, Detroit, Glasgow, and Mexico City.

Art Basel Miami Beach 2010 will run from December 2 through December 5, 2010, with an exclusive VIP opening on December 1. Galleries selected from 29 countries will showcase paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, photography, editions, and videos. The show’s list of participating galleries makes Art Basel Miami Beach the most prestigious art show of the Americas, featuring both highly established galleries and dynamic newcomers. (The full list of exhibitors can be found at www.artbasel.com/sectors). Prices range from a few hundred dollars, for multiples by young artists, to several million dollars for museum-quality masterpieces.

Prominent guests from around the world will attend the exclusive opening on December 1. Many major global museums are organizing trips to Florida, and numerous groups of art collectors from Latin America and Europe have already announced their visits. During the show’s five-day run, more than 40,000 visitors are expected at Art Basel Miami Beach 2010.

Art Galleries sector
The Art Basel Miami Beach Selection Committee – comprised of 12 renowned international gallerists – has picked more than 180 galleries for the main sector of this year’s show. More than half of the exhibitors come from outside the United States, with strong participation from Europe, 20 galleries from Latin America, eight galleries from Asia and two from Africa. The following galleries are exhibiting for the first time: Cernuda Arte (Coral Gables), Leslie Feely Fine Art (New York), Hackett Mill (San Francisco), Galerie Rodolphe Janssen (Bruxelles), Sabine Knust Maximilian Verlag (München), Jorge Mara – La Ruche Gallery (Buenos Aires), Nyehaus (New York), Franklin Parrasch Gallery (New York), Gary Snyder (New York). The following galleries are returning to the Art Galleries after a one-year hiatus: Galería Juana de Aizpuru (Madrid), The Approach (London), Arndt (Berlin), Luis Campaña (Köln), David Nolan Gallery (New York), Anthony Reynolds Gallery (London), Sprüth Magers Berlin London (Berlin), Galerie Bob van Orsouw (Zürich), Waddington Galleries (London), Washburn Gallery (New York), Donald Young Gallery (Chicago).

Art Kabinett sector
In the Art Kabinett program, galleries selected for the Art Galleries sector present small curated exhibitions in a separately delineated space within their booth. The exhibition concepts for the 20 Art Kabinetts are diverse, including thematic group exhibitions, art-historical solo shows and showcases for rising stars.

Art Nova sector
In this year’s Art Nova sector, 50 emerging and established galleries from 17 countries are presenting new works by either two or three artists. In all, recent pieces by 131 artists will be on display, providing visitors an opportunity to see pieces fresh from studios around the globe – and making the sector an ideal place to spot the newest artistic tendencies.

Art Positions sector
The new criteria for Art Positions creates a platform for a single major project from one artist, allowing curators, critics and collectors to discover ambitious new talents. The sector presents 14 young galleries from seven different countries, showcasing cutting-edge single projects by the artists Hany Armanious (1962), Jorge Méndez Blake (1974), Brian Bress (1975), François Bucher (1972), Dario Escobar (1971), Fernanda Fragateiro (1962), Nikolas Gambaroff (1979), Eddie Martinez (1977), Gabriel Sierra (1975), Kara Tanaka (1983), Johanna Unzuetta (1974), Phil Wagner (1974), Judi Werthein (1967) and Héctor Zamora (1974).

Art Public
Art Public, curated for the second time by Patrick Charpenel of Guadalajara, Mexico, features projects by internationally renowned artists. Selected from proposals by the galleries of Art Basel Miami Beach, the projects are installed in the outdoor public spaces of Miami Beach, within close proximity to Oceanfront area and the Miami Beach Convention Center. These works will engage directly with the spectator, interrupting the daily routine of passersby in poetic and surprising ways.

The Oceanfront
Occupying an entire city block directly at the heart of Miami Beach’s waterfront, the Oceanfront exhibition area will be purpose-built for the presentation of contemporary art, performance, video, and live music every night. Selected by Art Basel Miami Beach and Creative Time as the winners of an architectural contest, architects Phu Hoang and Rachely Rotem will deploy thousands of feet of reflective rope to create this temporary space.

The Oceanfront Nights program for 2010 features four cities at the forefront of today’s artistic experimentation and cross-disciplinary collaboration: Berlin, Detroit, Glasgow, and Mexico City. From December 1 to December 4, the diverse program will spotlight one city per night, featuring music, video, performances and more. Art Basel Miami Beach and Creative Time have invited four organizations to partner on creating these Oceanfront nights – the Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit, Museo Tamayo in Mexico City, Tramway in Glasgow, and 032c in Berlin.

Art Basel Conversations
Art Basel Conversations offers audiences access to first-hand information on important aspects of the international artworld, starting the program with the traditional Artist Talk Premiere featuring a legendary artist. Topics for the following panel discussions include ‘Public/Private: Museums in the Digital Age,’ ‘Latin America: The Collector as Catalyst’ and ‘Artistic Practice: The School Makers.’ Distinguished artists, art collectors, museum directors, curators, critics, gallerists, publishers, and others active in the cultural sphere will take part. There is time allotted after each Art Basel Conversation for the audience to meet the panel informally.

Art Salon
Situated in the entrance D area of the Miami Beach Convention Center, Art Salon is a platform for discussion by artworld figures presenting their projects, with an emphasis on the most current themes in contemporary art. Informal in format but international in scope, it also features book launches, artist talks, roundtable discussions and lectures.

Art Film
Art Film is curated by Zurich film connaisseur This Brunner and will feature the award-winning film ‘Waste Land,’ which follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of ‘catadores’ – pickers of recyclable materials, to create a new series of works.

Museums and Private Collections
Once again, Miami’s leading private collections – among them the Rubell Family Collection, CIFO, the de la Cruz Collection Contemporary Art Space and Home, and the Dacra Collection – will be opening their homes and warehouses to guests of the international art show. The museums of South Florida, too, will be staging important exhibitions to coincide with Art Basel Miami Beach, including: ‘Susan Rothenberg: Moving in Place’ at the Miami Art Museum; ‘Isaac Julien’ at the Bass Museum; ‘John Storrs: Machine-Age Modernist’ and ‘Nick Cave: Meet Me at the Center of the Earth’ at the Norton Museum; ‘Seduce Me,’ a collaboration by Isabella Rossellini, Andy Byers, and Rick Gilbert at the Wolfsonian-FIU; ‘Bruce Weber: Haiti/Little Haiti’ and ‘Jonathan Meese: Sculpture’ at MOCA Miami; Jim Drain at Locust Projects and the Pearl and Stanley Goodman Latin American Collection at the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale.

Sponsors and Partners
In 2010, UBS continues its longstanding and successful partnership with Art Basel and
Art Basel Miami Beach. The firm has been main sponsor of Art Basel for the past seventeen years and main sponsor of Art Basel Miami Beach since the show’s inception in 2002. The world-renowned jeweler Cartier supports Art Basel Miami Beach as Associate Sponsor, as do NetJets, the first and largest fractional aircraft ownership company in the world, and AXA Art, the globally active specialty art and collectibles insurance company, which will again provide multilingual VIP guided tours at
Art Basel Miami Beach. Furniture is provided by Moroso. Additional partners can be found at www.artbasel.com/sponsors.
