Local Hero: Sofy Encanto

300x300

Bio

Sofy Encanto is the lead singer and songwriter for the Miami Based band Elastic Bond.

Who has been your most influential mentor?

My mom

How did you get to where you are today?

It starts with knowing what makes you happy and following the path of your heart, then a lot of hard work, trial and error with determination, and definitely a little help from my friends…. and family. Also knowing that this is a continuous cycle.

How did you get to be a community leader?

I was never intended to be a community leader, but I do like to stand up for what I believe in, regardless of what society is trying to mold you to believe, and when you live by that principle it seems you end up living a lifestyle with substance and some people might admire that because it either takes a lot of courage or a lot of cluelessness.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see my self in a happy place where I have made significant moral and musical contributions to my community and perhaps the world.

What about this city inspires you?

The beach, the sun and the passion of the people.

What is your favorite thing about Miami?

The Ocean and being close to my family.

Finish these sentences:

Miami should be… open 24 hours

Miami could be… open 24 hours

Miami wants to be… open 24 hours

Miami needs… more farms and recreational programs in public schools.

L’éléphant dans la Salle- (The Elephant in the Room) is an idiom for an obvious truth that is either being ignored, or otherwise unaddressed. The purpose of this exhibit is to provide a safe place for issues and topics that are normally hidden from public view.

Through visual and performance art, the artists participating in this event will share secrets and taboos, discussing openly to find solutions for our own individual and collective emancipation. Viewers are invited to enter the ‘Confessional’, an interactive safe space installation to share their ‘elephant’.

L’elephant dans La Salle will be hosted by 2 of 1310 Gallery resident artist Niki Lopez (visual artist & designer), and Alana DaCosta, (singer/songwriter).

L’éléphant dans la Salle:

Art + Performance + Community Outreach

Lopez and DaCosta will collaborate with a licensed therapist to facilitate a workshop called “What’s Your Elephant”, where youth and adult participants can work in a safe space to own the secrets they keep. “The obvious is oftentimes ignored and swept under the rug. Some may chose to never understand it,” says DaCosta. “Yet, we all have the power of choice to free ourselves of whatever makes us uncomfortable.”

“It’s about acknowledging it, owning it, so that it doesn’t define you.” Says Lopez, an artist with her own elephant that will be revealed at the exhibit.

Lopez & DaCosta asks the public to participate by submitting their unspoken truth AND use the hashtag #whatsyourelephant on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram to submit their unspoken truth.

Public Art Wednesday: Under the Sea Images at the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science

Filippo Borghi, Blue Shark

Summer’s in Miami can be brutal, but don’t let that hot Miami air stop you from enjoying the beautiful art this lovely city has to offer. This summer take a trip over to the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science for the Under the Sea Underwater Exhibition.  The underwater exhibit will be open through August on Saturday’s and Sundays from 10am to 6pm.  The Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science will host 26 images from 2013-2014 annual underwater photography contest, presented by The University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.

What makes The Annual Underwater Photography Contest unique is that is is open only to amateur photographers who earn less than 20 percent of their income from photography.  The contest is for images shot all around the world and are judged based on five categories, Macro, Fish or Marine Animal Portrait, Wide Angle and Best University of Miami Student Photograph.

Take a break from your usual weekend plans and immerse yourself in an underwater paradise at the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum. Don’t miss your chance to see the creatures of the sea captured by up and coming photographers!

Photographs of Life Is Art presents Art/Work Connections #21 Understanding Grants for Artist with Joshua Kingston at Eleazar Delgado Studio on 7/15/14

Life Is Art  presents Art/Work Connections #21: Understanding Grants for Artist with Joshua Kingston at Eleazar Delgado Studio Tuesday, July 15, 2014. Art/Work Connections is a monthly series of seminars presented by Life Is Art featuring business professionals speaking on a variety of topics vital to the success of working artists. This month we covered  Understanding Grants for Artist.

About Joshua Kingston:
Joshua Kingston was raised in a military family, moving often and quickly learned to adapt and connect with people. He studied Theater, Music and Literature in college and has worked as a Vet Tech and a Software Developer before settling in to his true calling, writing. Always feeling the need to have more knowledge, he went back to school to obtain a Masters in Theology.

Today, he writes helps artists verbalize their art into statements and galleries develop catalog material while his passion is the challenge of grant writing for both individual artists, projects, and small/mid-sized Arts organizations.

About Eleazar Delgado Studio:
Originally conceived at our home, Eleazar Delgado Studio has always been the artist’s creative space. The idea grew into a gathering place for our friends, mostly artists in their own rights, to showcase their current work and preview concepts. We made it official in 2010 when we opened a public space in Wynwood. Today in addition to being Eleazar’s personal art studio, we host local talents and leaders who need a professional environment to showcase, educate, and enrich the community at large.

About the Art/Work Connections Program
The Art/Work Connections program is a monthly series of business seminars held at galleries and art spaces around South Florida targeted at artists and those working in the arts. Everyone is welcome and can benefit from them. A free event held at Viophilia on Saturday, July 19th 2014 for artists and creatives of all ages and mediums to come together and paint the night away. We set up the perfect environment to generate collaborative work by hanging large scale wood panels and canvases around the room and then covering the floors and walls for easy cleanup. Supply stations are set up with paints, brushes, water, palettes, and paper towels for artists to use throughout the evening.

The goal is to make connections and bonds within the creative community through synergetic expression. Throughout the evening, masters mix with amateurs, curators blend with observers and even non-artists are inspired to participate. By breaking down the individual roles of artist, spectator and consumer the environment influences the final work through a collaborative experience.

Toro Toro Miami Review

Toro Toro is an Exquisite Experience

Toro-Toro-Miami-68

You only get one chance to make a first impression and Toro Toro at the Intercontinental Hotel floored us in all respects.  We were joined by Maria the Foodaholic for a remarkable dining experience at this stunning locale. She co-authored this review with us.

From the moment we stepped into the lobby, we were taken aback by the gorgeous beige marble décor lining the walls, and the captivating neon lights around vivid color changing screens. The gargantuan marble sculpture in the middle of the lobby conveyed a sense of historic grandeur balanced against the modern Miami flashing neon screens connecting the second and third floors. It was truly a seductive entryway to an amazing, yet under-the-radar restaurant.

Toro-Toro-Miami-67

The resplendent allure continued with dark brick wooden tables inside Toro Toro and the beautiful supple oak colored leather booths. Rustic lanterns hung from the ceiling contrasting majestically against the red candles on the table. An artistic tree branch hung from the ceiling, seemingly crowning the robust red and white flowers below, adding vibrancy to the unique décor. Continue reading “Toro Toro Miami Review”

Talk About it Tuesday: Endangered Pine Rockland turned into Commercial Housing

1rhK4K.St.56

The University of Miami recently sold 88 acres of rockland, which contains a variety of plants animals and insects found in no other place. The University of Miami sold one of the world’s rarest forests to a Palm Beach County developer who has plans of turning it into a Walmart, an LA Fitness, Chik-fil-A, Chili’s, around 900 apartments and a 158,000-sqaure-foot box store.

Developers have agreed to set aside 40 acres of preserved land of the 88 that were purchased. This leaves less than 2 percent of the vast savanna that once covered South Florida’s ridge left remaining. Attorney Dennis Olle, board member of Tropical Audubon and the North American Butterfly Association was quoted saying, “You wonder how things end up being endangered? This is how. This is bad policy and bad enforcement. And shame on UM.”

The news of these recent plans to develop the endangered land into shopping centers and apartment complexes has left many Miami residents and environmentalists questioning the integrity of the University choosing to sell the land.

How do the residents of Miami feel about these new plans?  Let us know on Twitter at @Loop305 with the hash tag #TalkAboutitTuesday

2014 Summer Breast Cancer Awareness- Call WBHI for your annual mammogram
Although October is known as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the disease affects women all year round. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and nearly 40, 000 die each year. The Women’s Breast Health Initiative, Florida Affiliate (WBHI) built its success on the fact that early detection saves lives and has a summer breast cancer awareness campaign offering life-saving mammograms to women in Miami-Dade and South Broward counties. Call The Women’s Breast Health Initiative at (305) 825-4081 to make an appointment today.
Mammograms are recommended for women each year starting at age 40. By calling (305) 825-4081 for an annual mammogram, qualifying women will be provided with screening performed by collaborating hospital and medical partners. If you haven’t received your mammogram this year, give them a call today!
This summer breast cancer awareness campaign is sponsored by the Women’s Breast Health Initiative, Florida Affiliate, a nonprofit organization that provides critical information and screenings to women in South Florida. Dedicated to fighting breast cancer as a deadly disease, WBHI empowers at-risk women to beat breast cancer through targeted door to door outreach, referrals, screening and/or treatment. This organization believes that all women should benefit from the prevention and early detection of breast cancer, regardless of their ability to pay. Summer Dining Series at Wynwood Kitchen and Bar

Wynwood-Kitchen-23

Wynwood Kitchen and Bar has launched a European summer tasting menu. We swung by to try the Spanish menu last month. Currently, they are serving German dishes, and will serve Portugal treats in August.

The Duck Prosciutto was a brand new flavor for us.  When the salty, bacon like duck meat was combined with the San Simon and Tetilla cheese and the crunchy toast it was delightful. The Quince paste jam (similar to guava) tied everything together splendidly. The sweet sauce was a nice contrast to the savory duck and cheeses.

Wynwood-Kitchen-6
The Stuffed Piquillo Peppers were a tasty beautiful plate.  It was comprised of crabmeat, Manchego cheese with a aji amarillo sauce. The Manchego melded with the crab giving it a creamy consistency. The aji amarillo sauce had some heat, so don’t douse the pepper in it if you are spice adverse. Continue reading “Summer Dining Series at Wynwood Kitchen and Bar”

Music Monday: Elastic Bond

EB-photo-944

Elastic Bond is a Miami based group of new generation multicultural Latinos, who incorporate music from the past in order to make music for the future. Their music has been described as alternative combined with an urban edge and a tropical twist. The band was created while doing a project for Venezuelan producer Andres Ponce. Andres met singer/songwriter Sofy Encato through mutual friends in 2004. They began collaborating and started working on tracks together which eventually led to the creation of Elastic Bond.

In 2006 Elastic Bond released an independent album called, “Madrugada.” The album has been described as a lounge electronica sound, which showcases Ponce’s instrumentals, Encanto’s vocals and features guest musicians from the Miami music scene. Not long after the release of this album Elastic Bond was performing all over town.  They collaborated with the guitar sounds of Buffalo Brown and David Burgos on the trumpet. In 2007 they released their second independent album called, “Excursion,” which featured artists such as, “Orion” and Livan Hernandez.

Their latest album, “REAL” is based on well-crafted pop songs with catchy melodies. The album has a unique style of urban tropical funk which is sung in English and Spanish.

Check out the music of Elastic Bond: Here!

Guest Article: Words on an important (researched) subject: Public Libraries by Jonathan Rose

A guest article by Jonathan Rose

For The Mayor and The Commission of Miami-Dade County:

“And even should the cloud of barbarism and despotism again obscure the science
and libraries of Europe, this country remains to preserve and restore light and liberty to them. . . .” [emphasis added]
Letter to John Adams
[September 12, 1821]

From an essay by Gautam Patel (lawyer from India) Public Libraries: The Soul of a Civilization

“[T] the heart of every city is defined by two things: the state of its public spaces, and the quality and condition of its public libraries. Indeed, a public library defines not only the city in which it sits, but the state of the society that created it. [emphasis added]
* * *
Public libraries represent an ideal, an idea of freedom and a commitment to its continuance. In modern times, perhaps the greatest commitment to public libraries (and, this cannot be coincidence either, university education) has been in America and England.
[emphasis added]
* * *
Cutting back on public spending on libraries is every bit as catastrophic and dangerous as burning or physical destruction, and far more insidious. [emphasis added]
* * *
But there is a deeper reason why we should all protest against the closures and cutbacks being forced on libraries. The loss of every library is not just the loss of a building or a warehouse of books. It represents a loss of knowledge, an abandonment of a commitment to education, growth, development and freedom. The loss of every library shrinks its society. Jorge Luis Borges imagined paradise to be “a kind of library”; great societies shave great public libraries, for nothing represents a more democratic commitment to the citizen than a public garden and a public library. [emphasis added]
[Entire article]
and:
“Google may save time. Libraries save minds. There can never be enough emphasis added to the statement ‘Libraries save minds.’ ” [emphasis added]

Whether you are visiting Miami or whether you are a current resident, you MUST check out the absolutely stunning Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Vizcaya has been described as, “The finest private house ever built in America.” Vizcaya was built in the early 1900’s out of plants and materials native to Florida. A great way to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather Miami has to offer while taking in some of the most beautiful sights!

Vizcaya is open every day from 9:30am-4:30pm with the exception of Tuesday! What are you waiting for?! Plan your day at Vizcaya today!

LAB Miami

Our city is in an exciting moment of growth and evolution. The conversation about Miami’s future has never been more active, but we’re not yet having it together, as one community. Many groups are locked in silos or feel left out of the wave of innovation and creative energy surging through the city. To build a vibrant and successful place, we need the perspective and participation of all people who live here—the rich and the not-rich, the young and the not-young, the urban and the rural; Miamians of every race, creed, background and experience.

How can we work together to ensure that all of our neighbors have a hand in shaping our collective future? Join us for a 1.5 day creative workshop on Aug 1-2 at The LAB Miami.

On the evening of Friday, Aug 1, we’ll host an opening kick-off reception in which we will lay the groundwork for the workshop the following day. Miamians of many backgrounds—from taxi drivers to youth—will creatively present stories to illustrate their lived experiences surviving in Miami’s current economic and social landscape. We will come back on Saturday, Aug 2 for a day of discussion and creativity as we work in small groups across disciplines—design, law, art, activism, technology, social enterprise—to generate concrete ideas responding to those challenges in order to make Miami’s future more inclusive.
People from every place, expertise and experience are invited to attend (writ: design thinkers, social entrepreneurs, artists, technologists, lawyers, community members excited to ideate!). The kickoff and workshop are free and food and drink will be served. Register here and indicate your background to be place on a team today!

See you then!

We aim to create a more inspiring Miami as we replace ad space with art space.

Meet some of the 20+ participating Miami artists and learn more about the project while enjoying a cocktail and the sounds of Bardot’s DJs. Late night performance by roots/dub reggae group Jahfe.

This fundraising network event is the brainchild of Rebecca Ott & Gena Rumble. We recently had the pleasure of meeting Lorna Owens a renowned midwife, nurse, & attorney who created the Footprints Foundation. Owens has spent her life working with and behalf of women, first as a health care provider and then as a legal advocate and firebrand.

“We believe any model designed to help women must include a reduction in maternal and infant mortality, education, entrepreneurship and advocacy.”

The Footprints Foundation is working in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somaliland, Jamaica, & Florida City to:
-Reduce maternal and infant mortality in low income communities
-Fight teenage pregnancy
-Campaign against female genital mutilation

We hope you make it out to support this great cause, buy some rad jewelry for you and yours, & get to know PI professionals in the greater south Florida area invested in maintaining exceptional ethics.

Music Monday: Miami Raised Musicians

gloria-estefan--miami-sound-machine-51dea67c0d411

Having a successful career in music can be a tricky task to accomplish, but the people of Miami have a special spark and flair that gives them the edge they need to succeed. Miami is a hot city filled with even hotter talent, especially when it comes to music!

Gloria Estefan, Trina, Luther Campbell, Trick Daddy and Jon Secada (to name a few) all grew up in Miami and have had tremendous success in the music industry.

Gloria Estefan attended St. Michael-Archangel School and Our Lady of Lourdes Academy in Miami. She also worked at the Miami International Airport as an English/Spanish/French translator in the Customs Department, prior to her success in music.

Trina grew up in Miami and attended the Miami Northwestern Senior High School. She began her career as a model and a rapper in Miami prior to her career taking off when she was featured on Trick Daddy’s second album.

Luther Campbell better known as Luke was born in Miami Beach. Prior to his music career Luke worked as a cook at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach, while promoting concerts and bringing together the hottest rap groups in Miami. He also participated in an 8-week study program at the public radio station WDNA.

Trick Daddy, the well-known rapper and producer grew up in Miami as well. After being featured on one of Luke Campbell’s songs from his album, “Uncle Luke,” his career began to take off.

Jon Secada, known as the Cuban American singer songwriter was born in Cuba, but raised in Hialeah, Florida. Secada attended high school at South Florida’s Hialeah High School then went on to Miami Dade Community College before transferring to the University of Miami. He received his bachelors in Music and earned a Master’s in Jazz Vocal Performance.

This list just goes to show, being raised in Miami will give anyone that extra edge they need to conquer the music industry. Miami is due for a new music star! Who will be Miami’s next music sensation? Tweet us some of your favorite upcoming musicians in Miami at @Loop305 with the hash tag #MusicMonday

Diverse blend of ingredients to celebrate the Heritage and Culture of Overtown: Art, Music, Entertainment, Youth Zone, Food, Drinks
Presented by Headliner Market Group, the Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and City of Miami Commissioner Keon Hardemon

Miami,FL-(June 30, 2014)-The 4th annual Overtown Music and Arts Festival(formerly named Overtown Rhythm and Arts Festival), will take place in the heart of the Overtown Business District, NW 3rd Avenue between 9th & 11th Streets on Saturday, July 19, 2014. The event starts at 11am and is free and open to the public. The event has attracted thousands of attendees over the past three years and plans to widen visitor demographics with its star-studded line up of musical artists headlined by Grammy-nominated Raheem Devaughn. Entertainment also includes live performances by Keke Wyatt(TVOne R&B Divas, Case, Jaguar Wright, Teedra Moses, Sebastian Mikael, Deep Fried Funk Band, and Larry Dogg.

Once known as “Miami’s Little Broadway”, Overtown previously hosted music greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington and Aretha Franklin. In the past, the city was frequently visited by international guests seeking to enjoy the unique food, music and entertainment the “Colored Town” offered. Artistic and cultural celebrations allow a community to begin to understand the historic, cultural, economic, and social context of a community — an essential foundation for developing and enhancing sense of place. The Overtown Music and Arts Festival presents an opportunity to celebrate the rich heritage that the Overtown community provides to the landscape of South Florida.

“I would like to encourage everyone to join me at the 4th Annual Overtown Music and Art Festival. The CRA and the City of Miami have worked tirelessly to make this a most exciting and enjoyable celebration,” states Commissioner Keon Hardemon, City of Miami, District 5.

Does Your Business Model truly generate the most efficient and profitable enterprise that you can achieve?

Understanding How to Design and Test Business Models Is the Most Valuable Tool a CEO Can Have to Thrive in the New Economy. Would You Like The Local Experts From ActionCOACH to Help You with That?

In this value packed workshop you will discover …

– The secret benefit of defining your business model completely.
– The hidden gold in being able to describe your business model so that you and others can understand it.
-The treasure in designing and testing various business models to find the most effective one for you and your business now and for the future.

The experts agree. In a recent article by Geoff Colvin, senior editor at large for Fortune Magazine, entitled “Your Business Model is Obsolete,” he makes this assertion: Everything you think you know about staying competitive doesn’t work anymore. The most crucial competency for every business today is the innovation of their business model. The new fundamental question, the greater challenge, is in the question “How can we make money?” This question is proving even more significant than the product or service innovation conversation that has dominated the business arena for several years. Colvin warns that even if your business model is working right now it won’t be for long.

He states “several forces are combining to shred business models economy wide.” He cites information technology and its effect on every information based business, as a key factor. The scope and power of information technology allows most businesses to change and adapt easier and faster. It also multiplies the speed and power of other trends, such as the rise of emerging markets, the growing economic role of governments, and changing consumer tastes. Business Management Expert, Peter Drucker noted that “sloughing off yesterday” is almost impossibly difficult, yet every organization must get used to doing it regularly. The largest obstacles will be weak imaginations, threatened interests, and culture. Business-model innovation is the new essential competency. It will separate tomorrow’s winners from the losers.

Fordistas is pleased to present Materia Prima, a collaborative exhibition by Argentine artists Pastel and Elian at the Yo♥305 Gallery in Wynwood. The Opening Night reception is slated for Thursday July 10, 2014.

In Materia Prima, Pastel and Elian explore the true meaning of collaboration by using individual aesthetics to find points of intersection in their work. While Pastel uses symbolism to tell the story of a 19th century battle and its socio-political tensions, Elian explores the geometric properties of art by analyzing form through the use of primary colors and space.

By definition, “materia prima” are raw elements taken from nature that are later transformed into consumer goods.

“With elements I talk about stories and I talk about cultures.” – Pastel

During the joint exhibition, a special, limited-edition quantity of hand printed scarves by the artists will be made available for purchase. Ranging from $40-$100 (at buyer’s discretion), the complete proceeds will benefit a South Florida Ford linked charitable cause.

Philip McDaniel / St. Augustine Distiller

Florida is having a spirits renaissance thanks in part to the St. Augustine Distillery. Chat Chow TV sat down the distillery’s president and founding partner Philip McDaniel to found out more about the new craft distillery, its historic location and how it is stepping up St. Augustine’s “cool” factor.

The distillery is the brain child of McDaniel and his fellow founding partner Ryan Dettra who were looking for new projects to take on in their adopted hometown of St. Augustine. They were intrigued by the idea of bringing a distillery to the area and went around the country researching and discovering the best practices on how to do so.

They partnered up with Master Distiller David Pickerell, who has more than 30 years of experience in the distillery industry under his belt with brands like Maker’s Mark, and used some of Florida’s abundant produce like sugarcane, corn and wheat, to create their spirits. The first one created was vodka, followed by the recently released gin along with rum that will be coming in early 2015. Bourbon is also in production and once released will be Florida’s first bourbon.

The distillery is housed in the historic FP&L Ice Plant right in the heart of the historic St. Augustine beach area. It is easily accessible by trolley and tour buses and provides free tours daily where guests can learn more about the plant, its process, sample some product and purchase it if so desired.

Curious who Ella and Bessy are? Or what goes into the distillery’s signature Florida Mule? Find out all that and more in the video above.

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – Nicaragua Beach Style

We have already established that Miami is the queen of beach style but, like everything in Miami, that beach style is the product of a melting pot environment. As such, we have always been a little curious to study how our beach style compares to beach styles elsewhere. During our recent visit to Nicaragua, we began our research at the Hacienda Iguana Beach Club, which is located in front of the internationally-renown surf break at Playa Colorado. The Beach Club’s restaurant, tiki bar, pool, and handful of hammocks gave us numerous options from which to sip a frozen cocktail and people watch.

Like other surf destinations in Central America, Playa Colorado is primarily visited by international visitors and ex-pats that are a) surfers, b) surf photographers, c) surfer wives/girlfriends/groupies, or d) all of the above. The beach style was composed mainly of functional swimsuits from brands like Roxy, Quiksilver, and O’Neill – our surf crew’s beachware was no exception. Beyond swimsuits, the style was casual. Our favorite non-swim staples were the bohemian cover-ups and accessories.

While we are partial to Miami’s elegant and flashy beach style, we brought back a little of Nicaragua’s laid-back beach style with us to Miami. Check out some of the beach style photos we snapped during our trip below for inspiration! We definitely took notes.

How might we design more participatory creative moments in Miami? Join us for a community conversation and brainstorm.

Miami’s art community is growing and changing every day, helping to build a more vibrant and expressive city. Yet for many of us, our experience with that community is mostly one-way interactions, as audience or viewer or supporter. Participatory art invites people to join in the process of creating a work—whether it’s painting, performance or experiment—and can transform people’s ideas of art and their relationship with the local artistic community.

Join the Arts and Business Council of Miami and WhereBy.Us for an evening of inspiration and community creativity as we brainstorm ideas for building participatory artistic experiences in our city. We’ll hear lightning talks from local artists, innovators and creators, and then break into small groups to create new ideas we might build together. The most promising ideas will be eligible for small funding that can help make them happen.

Food, drink and live music will be on hand. Food and drink begin at 6pm; speakers start at 6:30; our brainstorm starts at 7:15. Anyone and everyone is welcome.

We look forward to seeing you!

The 4th annual Overtown Music and Arts Festival(formerly named Overtown Rhythm and Arts Festival), will take place in the heart of the Overtown Business District, NW 3rd Avenue between 9th & 11th Streets on Saturday, July 19, 2014. The event starts at 11am and is free and open to the public. The event has attracted thousands of attendees over the past three years, and plans to widen visitor demographics with its star-studded line up of musical artists headlined by Grammy-nominated Raheem Devaughn. Entertainment also includes live performances by Keke Wyatt, Case, Jaguar Wright, Teedra Moses, Deep Fried Funk Band, and Larry Dogg.

The Overtown Music and Arts Festival presents an opportunity to celebrate a rich heritage that the Overtown community provides to the landscape of South Florida.

The event will also include a Youth Zone presented by Teens Exercising Extraordinary Success (T.E.E.S) incorporating an educational health & wellness-component, fun fitness activities for toddlers to teens. HistoryMiami will curate youth activities related to “Urban Arts” and music inspired activities, including coloring activities and a book reading of “What is Hip Hop.”

Another highlight includes Mavericks Tonsorial Parlor being transformed into a visual art exhibition showcasing the works of famed video director, Gil Green.  The art exhibit will explore how images in pop culture are impressionable to the next generation.

Non-profit agencies involved in the event include: Animal Adoption by the Miami-Dade County Animal Services Department and the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida.
Sponsors include: City of Miami Commissioner Keon Hardemon, Southeast Overtown/Park West CRA, AMC Theaters, Comcast, T.E.E.S, Absolute Fit Life, RT Group, LLC and House of Wings.

PRESS RELEASE
On Saturday, June 28, international superstar and leading Miami businesswoman Gloria Estefan will kick off a daylong celebration at Miami Marine Stadium. Estefan, a Trustee of the National Trust for Historic Preservation who was named the “Voice of Miami Marine Stadium” in May 2013, will be joined by representatives from the National Trust and Friends of Miami Marine Stadium to unveil several recent, high profile accomplishments in the campaign to restore the iconic stadium, including an announcement by Estefan herself.

A series of events will take place throughout the day following a 10:00 a.m. press conference, including:

The ART History Mural Project, for which nine world-renowned contemporary street artists will be at the stadium to create large-scale, site-specific murals. The project, curated by stencil artist and muralist Logan Hicks, features a roster of local and international street artists including Luis Berros, Doze Green, Elbow Toe, Evoca1, Ian Kuali’I, Joe Iurato, RISK, and Rone. Although closed to the general public, these incredible murals will be presented through extensive documentation, as well as an archival print release at www.arthistory2014.com. Proceeds from the sale of the prints will directly support the stadium’s restoration.

An exclusive Instagram contest hosted by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Space for this exclusive contest is limited to only 30 registrants, who will be selected by the National Trust based on their enthusiasm for taking photos of all the things that make Miami special—including its historic icons like Miami Marine Stadium. Contest winners will get to meet Gloria Estefan, interact with the nine artists of the ART History Mural Project, and explore the stadium with its architect, Hilario Candela. Visit www.savingplaces.org/marinestadium to register. The deadline to enter is Monday, June 23, at 5:00 p.m. EST.

The June 28 event comes at an important time for the stadium. In July of 2013, Miami’s City Commissioners voted 4 to 1 to give Friends of Miami Marine Stadium full control over the stadium and the surrounding site so they could develop a plan to renovate and re-open the facility. Per an agreement with the City of Miami, Friends of Miami Marine Stadium has until January 2015 to raise an estimated $30 million to restore the stadium, with $10 million of that either identified or committed.

About the National Trust for Historic Preservation
The National Trust for Historic Preservation is a privately-funded nonprofit organization that works to save America’s historic places. In 2012, the National Trust named Miami Marine Stadium to its growing portfolio of National Treasures – historic buildings, neighborhoods, communities, and landscapes across the country that are threatened and face an uncertain future. For more information, visit www.savingplaces.org.

About the ART History Mural Project
Miami Marine Stadium has unknowingly reinvented itself as an iconic venue for street artists, who have flocked to the site from around the world to paint it. These artists, who saw Miami Marine Stadium as a muse, are responsible for breathing life back into this architectural gem. The ART History Mural Project was created to acknowledge artists’ role in the story of Miami Marine Stadium. Existing murals have already been painted by Axel Void, Hox, Pixel Pancho, Stinkfish, Abstrk, and Tatiana Suarez. Artists will continue to paint over the summer of 2014, with another group of renowned international artists coming together on September 6, 2014. The ART History Mural Project will culminate in a print show at Miami’s Gregg Sheinbaum Gallery in September, and a final art show of original works in December during Art Basel. Support for the project has been provided by Liquitex, 1xRun, Crescent Cardboard, and the National Trust. For more information and to purchase prints benefiting the stadium’s restoration, visit www.arthistory2014.com.

Resilience is that ineffable quality that allows some people to be knocked down by life and come back stronger than ever. Rather than letting failure overcome them and drain their resolve, they find a way to rise from the ashes. Psychologists have identified some of the factors that make someone resilient, among them a positive attitude, optimism, the ability to regulate emotions, and the ability to see failure as a form of helpful feedback. Even after a misfortune, blessed with such an outlook, resilient people are able to change course and soldier on.

Photographs of Coral Gables Restaurant Week Blogger’s Crawl by Mr Q 305

Recently, the Business Improvement District of Coral Gables invited Miami food bloggers to participate in a crawl of some of the restaurants participating in the hugely successful Coral Gables Restaurant Week, now in its seventh year.
The evening began with all the bloggers, more than sixteen of us, meeting at Swine Southern Table and Bar. There, we got to sample two of their signature drinks, the Swine Old-Fashioned: Bacon washed old overholt rye, maple syrup, house-made swine bitters and an Old Cuban: Eigth year old Bacardi, mint, lime, Delamotte  Champagne and angostura bitters. During cocktails they brought out the appetizer: Deviled Crab Hush Puppies with pickled celery and smoked trout roe. These Puppies were so full of flavor, I could’ve happily stay there just eating them the whole evening but, the best was yet to come, as an entrée we had the Smoked Brisket Steak covered with a delicious molasses glaze accompanied by stoneground grits, pickled corn and cheddar relish. This brisket was crisp on the outside and so moist on the inside, the meat just melted to the taste. I’ll be dreaming about it until I get back to Swine!
We had to move on…our next stop was Talavera Cocina Mexicana where they extended out the red carpet for us in typical Mexican hospitality fashion.
At Talavera Mexican Cuisine, the welcome cocktail was Pueblito Viejo: Corzo Reposado tequila, lemon juice, simple syrup, sugar, crushed mint served over ice. It is refreshingly sweet and goes down so easy!. The menu featured an appetizer consisting of Gordita Conchinita Pibil: (pulled pork) in a corn masa tortilla with a dry rub of chiles and spices. The taste of toasted corn of the tortillas combined with the flavor of the tender piglet was so pleasing to the taste buds, add to that the hint of chiles and you have the perfect appetizer.
Next were Enchilada Suizas: pulled white meat chicken inside a corn tortilla with poblano cream sauce and tomatillo salsa, topped with Oaxaca cheese and baked, served with crema Mexicana and cilantro. Hot, chewy, soft and delcious!
The second entree was Camarones al Ajillo: sautéed shrimp in a garlic sauce with dried guajillo chiles served with rice and watercress. The shrimp were so fresh and they had just the right touch of garlic. The rice complemented the dish so very well.
For dessert it was Crepas de Cajeta: crepes covered in Cajeta served with walnuts and vanilla ice cream. If you haven’t had this dessert I urge to go to Talavera and try it. You’ll thank me later.
The portions at Talavera were very generous and we were beginning to exhibit signs of food exhaustion but we marched on…
The next one up was Divino Ceviche where they welcomed us with a that typical Peruvian drink known as the Pisco Sour: Pisco, lemon juice, sugar and  angostura bitters topped with a frothy egg white meringue sprinkled with cinnamon…ooh so good…! there were Camote (Sweet Potato) Chips ready to be dipped in Aji Amarillo or Salsa de Huacatay accompanied by Canchas (Roasted Corn).
The hot appetizer consisted of Pulpo (Octopus) in Salsa Anticuchera. The octopus was lightly crunchy with a very pleasing smoky flavor.  For entree we were served the Trio de Ceviches consisting of Ceviche Tradicional,  Ceviche Divino (the Chef’s specialty) and Ceviche al Olivo. These Ceviches are made with slices of fresh fish and or whole shrimp marinated lightly in lime juice and seasoned with Peruvian limo chili, fresh cilantro and onion; garnished with sweet potato and choclo (Peruvian giant corn), the Ceviche Divino also has mango and avocado. The ceviche is so good that one of the bloggers proclaimed “the best ceviche she had ever had”, I concur.
For dessert, Mousse de Maracuyá (Passion Fruit) and Mousse de Chirimoya (Custard Apple). These are delicate mousses with a refreshing tropical flavor.
From Divino Ceviche we were on to Tarpon Bend for a glass of prosecco and to sample their Braised Short Rib. These ribs are braised for four hours and they are all flavor.
Finally we ended the crawl at Cibo Wine Bar where they started with a wonderfully soft and fresh Burrata and robust yet light Prosciutto di Parma, followed by Arancini: Rice balls stuffed with ragu and melted mozzarella.
The Grilled Whole Octopus with mixed greens, diced tomatoes drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice was amazing!
The Pappardelle with slow cooked lamb ragu covered with pecorino shavings was so delicate and yet robust that it didn’t matter how full I was, I still wanted more.
As if all that wasn’t enough they brought out a Black Tiger Shrimp in a wine garlic tomato sauce that was simply out of this world.
After an incredible twelve different courses, three dessert and five different drinks we were all exhausted, happy and ready to go home. It was an incredible experience!
You are still in time to try out the Gables Restaurant Week Menu but you better hurry because it ends June 29th.

Bio:

Born in New York and raised in Miami since that age of 4, Miami is home to me. I went to college for Fashion Design/Marketing & Merchandising and ended up getting into marketing and media. It’s been a great ride for just shy of two decades. Having gone through the gamut of  print, TV, radio, and the agency world, I am blessed to have a wonderful job where I get to do what I enjoy, meet new people, connect and create. My agency is growing and for that I am truly grateful. We’ve been around for nearly 14 years and I couldn’t be happier with what we have built.

When I am not working, I love to cook, travel and spend time with my family and friends. Downtime for me is kicking back and enjoying some great music and a glass of wine. I am all about simple pleasures. Life is way too short to forget them. I smile at strangers, emit and evoke positivity and try to help anyone whenever I can. I think when you act and live with intention, you can make a difference and that makes life great.

Who has been your most influential mentor?

That’s a tough one. I have been very fortunate to meet and work with some amazing people whom I have learned a lot from and others who’ve inspired me along my career. Naming a few, my two first bosses Clara Eshkenazi and Loreyne Alicea. I am friends with them to this day. Both are amazingly accomplished, talented, dynamic and passionate (aside from being AMAZING strategists in marketing and media). They taught me two decades ago to build relationships and the importance of integrity. I am grateful for those lessons and much more I took from them!

How did you get to where you are today?

I would say it was a few things. College was very important to me and a wonderful experience where I learned a lot. But also, I credit the ambition that my family helped to instill in me, that desire to “want more.” I always wanted to achieve, so that paired with opportunities and doors opened because of my relationships would be what truly helped to get me here. Although I am grateful for where I am, I’m not nearly finished!

How did you get to be a community leader?

I am humbled to be referenced as such. I just see myself as someone who cares. I find it hard to accept people walking around thinking that their (or our) purpose is just to work, pay bills, buy things… I don’t get into belief systems, religion or politics. BUT I do feel we have to make our mark somehow. No matter how hard one may have it, there is always an opportunity to help, to support, to inspire. I think people see those who “do something” as a leader. I am just one person who loves sharing and collaborating. I built my company with a methodology that we would always work with charitable organizations and try to make a difference. It’s been great working and meeting so many great people who I feel are real leaders here in our community. I see how dedicated they are and it moves me. So as far as leadership, I am appreciate for the reference.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see myself doing what I do now, just in a different fashion. I hope to continue to grow my company and take on more of a consultative role to afford me more time to spend with my family and to dedicate to my writing.

What about this city inspires you?

So much! We live in paradise! I live where people come to vacation. I never stop enjoying or take Miami for granted. The beaches, the people. We have so much diversity here. I love seeing new business opening and places being built. It just means we are growing as a city.

What is your favorite thing about Miami?

I love that I can sit in front of the ocean on our beautiful beaches. I love I can go in any direction and eat the most delicious food. My favorite thing?  That special “sazón” we have here that so many from the outside credit as our dose of “Latin flair.” In every article or news segment about Miami, they reference how “Caliente” the people, the food and nightlife are. Not a bad reference as they think if you are from Miami you’re hot!

Miami should be… seen as special for all the unique things we possess as a city.

Miami could be… even more amazing if more people truly wanted to make a difference.

Miami wants to be… known for our flagship teams, beautiful beaches, nightlife, and annual events. But there is STILL so much more for everyone to know us for.

Miami needs… some more great publicity! I feel we are known as one of the entertainment capitols, but need to showcase more of how AWESOME our city and people are instead of drama!

Public Art Wednesday: Wynwood Walls

img_3

In 2009 Tony Goldman was looking for a way to transform the warehouse district of Wynwood. He had a vision of creating a center that would attract the masses giving people a beautiful new place to explore.   Due to Tony’s passion for street art, The Wynwood Walls have now been transformed into magnificent murals done by some of the world’s most talented artists.

Tony’s goal was to change the way street art is viewed by presenting people with a place to understand it and enjoy it. He began the project at the 25th-26th Street complex with 6 separate buildings whose walls would feature graffiti and street art. Due to the positive feedback from his 2009 endeavor Tony decided to continue the project in 2010 by creating the Wynwood Doors, which is 175 feet of roll up storefront gates that have now been transformed into murals by some of the world’s greatest artists.

When the project began back in 2009 Jeffrey Deitch collaborated with Tony to help make the Wynwood Walls a success. When it came down to artist selection, Tony selected artists with help of Goldman Properties Arts Manager Meghan Coleman, and Medvin Sobio of the Visual Arts Collective Viejas Del Mercado. Artists from the United States, Brazil, Belgium, Mexico, Portugal, Ukraine, Portugal, Greece, Spain, Germany, France, England, Japan and Singapore are featured on the Wynwood Walls and Doors.

The Wynwood Walls attract thousands of people each year. Not only are these stunning walls attracting the masses, but also they are changing the way people view street art. What was once a misunderstood artistic expression is now admired and appreciated by the masses, as it should be!

Haven’t seen The Wynwood Walls? What are you waiting for?! The Wynwood Walls are located at the NW Second Avenue, between Joey’s Italian Café on 25th Street and the art-filled Wynwood Kitchen and Bar on 26th Street and are free of charge! And don’t forget to check out some of the artists featured on the Wynwood Walls here!

GO GO MOAD! Pop Up Kids Programs at MDC Museum of Art + Design, Creative Kids Project: Andy Warhol

Kids ages 6-12 are invited to tour The Influencers II exhibition and learn about the elements of art by painting, drawing and sculpting in the style of renowned artists in the exhibition. Parents and visitors are encouraged to stay and create a special project with their children based on the legendary artist Andy Warhol.

Renowned artist Andy Warhol was born Andrew Warhola in the working-class neighborhood of Oakland in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At an early age, he was afflicted with a rare neurological disorder which pushed him to take comfort in a world of his own within celebrity magazines and DC comic books. As a young adult, he experimented with several invented adaptations of his own identity. In this exploration, he decided to drop the “a” from his last name upon moving to New York.

Warhol graduated with a degree in Pictorial Design from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1949. New York proved to be a successful move for Warhol as he found abundant work as a commercial artist. He worked with posh companies such as Columbia Records, Glamour Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, NBC, Tiffany & Co., and Vogue. Warhol established his career as a praised graphic artist then shifted his focus to painting and drawing. Warhol’s paintings and prints grew to incorporate the techniques he developed as a commercial illustrator. In 1956, The Museum of Modern Art included him in his first group show.

It was the work he produced in the 1960’s and early 1970’s that solidified Warhol as a national icon. Becoming the symbol for the movement Pop Art, Warhol is best known for his iconic paintings of Campbell’s soup cans, Coca Cola bottles, and portraits of Marilyn Monroe.

A Stay in a Historic Castle in San Gimignano, Italy

Feel the Ancient Castle Energy

Historic- San-Gimignano-Castle-18

San Gimignano (or Sangiin local parlance) is an ancient walled city with impressive Game of Thrones like towers spanning up to the heavens. The town is located atop a mountain overlooking a 360 degree view of serene picturesque landscapes, which amplifies its gravitas and sheer elegance. Although most of the original 72 towers have not withstood the test of time, the city is still very much intact and a handful of towers still reign over the city in a majestic regal fashion.

Historic- San-Gimignano-Castle-59

We stumbled upon this castle online and were instantly drawn to it. Since we were travelling to a fable-like city, we felt compelled to stay at a castle that is over 1,000 years old. One of our favorite facets of Europe is the venerable spirit that permeates throughout the historic cities. One can intensely feel the energy of a city and the structures that have absorbed so much history over thousands of years. We thought a castle of this timeworn magnitude would be cool, unique and overflowing with these vibes. Continue reading “A Stay in a Historic Castle in San Gimignano, Italy”

Chilean Wine Seminar and Tasting Hosted by ProChile in Brickell

ProChile Wine Seminar 19

Yesterday evening, the ProChile Trade Commission in Miami hosted a Chilean Wine Seminar and tasting at the Conrad Hotel in Brickell. Chilean Winemaker Santiago Margozzini from Montgras Estates and Master Sommelier Fred Dexheimer conducted an educational presentation titled Chile: Land of Diversity and a Paradise for Viticulture. My wife and I arrived (on time) to a beautifully presented room set up to accommodate 60 or more guests interested in this stop in ProChile’s Chilean Wine Tour.

Santiago went through a slide presentation that highlighted just how diverse a country Chile really is, from the temperature to the rainfall to the geographic landscape to the soil. All of those factors have an extremely important impact on the country’s 16 wine-growing regions. And though diverse, the climate and isolation of the country is ideal for growing grapes. In addition to gentle winters and moderate summers, the lack of phylloxera, hail and bird attacks also contributes to the success of Chile’s growth in wine making over the past several decades. Twenty years ago, there were seven wine regions; today there are 16. Santiago explained that though it took some convincing, the regions are now classified in three groups based on the characteristics of the wines. That was done so wine makers could easily speak about their wines in such a way that would help promote their vineyards in a meaningful way. Those classifications are Costa, Entre Cordilleras, and Andes.

That’s when we began tasting the eight different wines in front of us, each chosen to represent the different viticulture regions of Chile. Santiago and Fred both led the tasting, speaking about the wineries and characteristics of each wine and how it was made. We started with a Sauvignon Blanc from Siegel made in the coastal area of Leyda. It was explained that the cold temperatures from the Pacific Ocean were key to growing this grape to perfection. Sauvignon Blanc is the #1 exported grape variety from Chile.

We were then asked to compare two different coastal Pinot Noirs from Valdivieso and Tabali. While I’m not exactly a wine expert, it was not difficult to see and taste the differences. Fred explained that one of the areas had more variations in temperature and wind than the other. In addition, the soils in the two regions are very different and impart different characteristics to the wines. So same grape but different outcomes.  Pretty cool!

ProChile Wine Seminar 2

Fred continued “geeking out” on soil as we tried a Cabernet Sauvignon blend from Morande, grown in the “alluvial” soil of Maipo, representative of the foothills of the Andes. We were then given a Cabernet Sauvignon/Malbec blend from Viu Manent which sparked a little comparison to the Malbecs of Argentina. We were told that some of the best Malbecs in the world come from this Chilean region called the Colchagua Valley. However, these wines are very different than what you would find in neighboring Argentina as the climate and soil and age of their vines are not the same.

Finally we arrived to a wine made by Santiago, MontGras Antu Syrah. “This is the best wine of the night, hahaha,” quipped Santiago. He explained this was grown on a famous hill in the volcanic soil of Colchagua and would be classified as an Entre Cordilleras wine. My wife and I actually agreed that the sweet fruity aroma and delicious flavors made this our favorite of the evening. Also from Colchagua, we tasted a Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend from Montes. Fred said this is a very well-known wine in the United States.

Our final wine of the seminar was another from MontGras, their Reserva Carmenere. We were told that Carmenere grapes are unique to Chile, though originally a French grape variety that was killed by phylloxera. Apparently, Chilean wine makers thought they were making Merlots though it was discovered that in fact it was a Merlot/Carmenere blend. Today, the best Carmenere wines are grown in sandy soil in a warm and sunny climate that allows the grapes to grow to a very ripe stage. This ensures a wine with round tannins and uniquely spicy characteristics. We liked this wine a lot too.

The evening then shifted to a tasting with many Chilean wineries. We tasted some additional wines and learned about some of the goals that each winery was pursuing. For some, it was just to get their name out in front of importers. We ate some cheese and fruits and hors d’oeuvres and mingled. It was an educational evening and fun to learn about one of Chile’s most important products!
