Join MANO Fine Art for their new exhibit “Meninas Unwrapped”, a nod to the popularity of Diego Velazquez’s ICONIC motif la menilna interpreted by artists Daniel Garcia and MANO. Velazquez would be pleased.

The interpretation of the world’s masterpieces is hardly a new phenomenon. Artists often look to the past to learn from the old masters. In “Some Are Meninas” contemporary artists: Daniel Garcia and MANO take on Diego Velazquez, interpreting his famed 1656 painting, “Las Meninas”, considered one of the greatest masterpieces ever painted.

The exhibit is not only a matter of looking back at the past but also a nod to the popularity of the iconic motif, it seems that every generation has made Velazquez’s “meninas” a reflection of their own, hundreds of artists from Picasso to Vik Muniz have been inspired by the works’ enigmatic qualities. Velazquez would be pleased

Cost: RSVP to facundorum@hs-pr.com to attend the “24 Hours in Mexico” Photo Exhibition. Limited availability, guests must RSVP to attend the public exhibition on Saturday, November 22nd.

Following a whirlwind 24-hour trip to Mexico, photographer Seth Browarnik has curated an original series of images of the FACUNDO Rum Collection, the first luxury collection of sipping rums from BACARDÍ, to form a stunning 30+ photography exhibit bringing the “art of rum” to life. These photographs tell the story of not only the meticulous production process of hand bottling the FACUNDO Rum Collection, a product sourced from the Bacardi family’s Private Reserves, but of the community, the heritage, and artistry one finds along the way.

Accompanied by BACARDÍ Brand Master David Cid, Browarnik traveled to Tultitlán, the BACARDÍ aging & blending facility where FACUNDO is bottled. They also stayed in La Galarza, a historic BACARDÍ distillery that showcases the rum company’s commitment to heritage and the legacy of founder Don Facundo Bacardi Massó. During the trip, Browarnik discovered what’s really behind the rum barrel: the people, the history, and the passion that is involved in the art of rum-making.

Open to the public for one day only in the Miami Design District, guests can experience the intimate journey Browarnik captured firsthand. Guests will also be able to experience the four variants from the FACUNDO Rum Collection neat or on the rocks as they view the photographs and relive the story as told though the exhibit.

The nation’s finest and largest literary gathering, Miami Book Fair International, presented by The Center for Literature and Theatre @ Miami Dade College (MDC), a program of Miami Dade College’s MDCulture, will celebrate its 31st edition this year.

New to the Fair this year will be Playtime, an international children’s theatre festival presented by Teatro Prometeo, and The Swamp, a pop-up lounge featuring live music and writers whose works explore the beauty, contradictions, uniqueness and weirdness of life in the Sunshine State. Both are made possible by a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, as part of its Knight Arts Challenge.

The Book Fair this year will feature 6WordsMiami, a community project where all are invited to submit their six-word stories. Whether it’s a memoir, fiction, fantasy or other – all submissions are welcome, though the Fair hopes some are inspired by Miami life. A 6WordsMiami reading will take place at the Book Fair. Some stories will be paired up with original photography and published in a limited-edition postcard set. Submissions will be accepted in English, Spanish or Creole. There is no limit to how many stories one can submit. Submission dates are June 15 through October 1 at 6wordsmiami@gmail.com and through social media using the hashtag #6WordsMiami.

The Miami Book Fair, one of Miami’s flagship cultural events, will treat book lovers to eight days of cultural and educational activities, including the beloved Evenings With… series, the IberoAmerican Authors program, literacy and learning activities for children and teens during Generation Genius Days, and The Kitchen, demos and panels for food enthusiasts in partnership with the college’s Miami Culinary Institute. Fairgoers will also enjoy more than 200 exhibitors from around the country selling books in a festive atmosphere and hundreds of authors reading and discussing new books during the weekend Street Fair.

Miami Book Fair International 2014 promises to be another exceptional literary event!

Public Art Wednesday: Departure by Yuri Tuma

Tomorrow, November 6th (Thursday), “Departure”, a series of new work by Miami-based artist Yuri Tuma will be opening at Butter Gallery with an artist reception. The works in “Departure” are re-shaped and re-contextualized photographs, like most of Tuma’s works. The large scale chromatic works of the collection take their origins, which are cell-phone photographed items, spaces, and colors to their most simplified forms; clean shapes and simple lines. Tuma combines mobile software with a psychologically meditative process to create the symmetry and patterns found in his images.

Artist Yuri Tuma was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and now lives and works in Miami. He was recently selected as a Fordista resident and as a finalist for the 2014 Miami New Times’ Mastermind award. He has had four solo exhibitions with Butter Gallery and has participated in group shows and art fairs in New York and Shanghai.

Australian Lamb Immersion with Miami’s Top Chefs

I always thought I adequately appreciated the craft of a chef. That was until I was invited to cook with Miami’s top chefs for a day at an Australian Lamb Immersion. After spending a whopping four hours drinking, laughing and cooking with these titans, I could barely stand up straight.  #Cheflife is ridiculously arduous, but these Miami chefs are rowdy, alcohol-guzzling warriors who dazzle us with their deft skills and magnificent plates.

The Australian Lamb & Beef Immersion was hosted by Meat & Livestock Australia to extol the benefits of meat from the Land Down Under. The continent that has become well known for its delicious wine is about to become just as famous for its succulent cuts of meat. Aussie meat is natural and untainted by chemicals. Their country is about as big as the US, but they have a population of only 23 million, compared with our 317 million. That means, as stated on the Meat & Livestock Australia website: they have an “abundance of pasture land and mild climate, which allow (their) livestock to be entirely grass-fed in a healthy and natural environment. All livestock are free of artificial additives and hormone growth promotant. (They are) pure products of a pure environment.” To put it in relatable US terms: Australian Lamb & Meat = Scarlett Johansson and American Lamb & Meat = Jasmine Tridevil!

The day started in my hood, with a trip to the kitchen at the Miami Marriott in Edgewater (a 10 block “neighborhood” next to the Miami Heat’s arena). Upon entering the banquet kitchen floor, I found Master Butcher Doug Piper carving up an entire lamb to the delightful attention of 15 of South Florida’s top chefs.

butcher

By top chefs, we’re are talking about talented culinary experts like (listed in alphabetical order, by restaurant):

The beloved Aussie, Chef Aaron Brooks and his loco tequila-swigging Sous Chef Jose Gomez were right next to the carcass carving station whipping up seemingly endless and sensational lamb dishes for us all to try, while we watched Doug continue to tear apart the lamb, limb from freaking limb. The lamb was tender, juicy and oozing with flavor. I believe we tasted virtually every part from tongue to tail.

After being more stuffed than a Turducken, they decided to feed us lunch!? Most of the chefs found this to be an opportune time to start drinking instead. There was some great convos marinating around the table about restaurant working conditions, depraved contests in Thailand and the smallest kitchen in Miami, which we believe is Harry’s Pizzeria.

After our primarily liquid lunch, we picked numbers out of a hat and were divvied up into teams. I was fortunate enough to be teamed up with the extraordinary talented Chef Thomas Griese of Michael Mina 74 and Chef Joshua Wahler of Estiatorio Milos by Costas Spiliadis. They were surprisingly chill with having me, a kitchen gimp who can not even julienne vegetables properly, as part of their team.

Chef/Consultant Adam Moore was our freaking awesome host. He was so funny and chill and curated a diverse and notable collection of beers for us to pound in the kitchen. He even set up little coolers underneath our tables to keep ‘em cold while we were slaving away.

There were a total of five teams and each were given a basket of diverse ingredients along with different cuts of scrumptious Australian lamb. Below is a photo of my team’s instructions and ingredient list.

instructions

This is where the real fun began for me, because although I do not know how to cook, borrowed an apron (Thank you, Chef Adam) strapped it on and dove right in. Cooking is intense and grueling manual labor. The kitchen is hot, you are on your feet, running around and working incessantly — not at all like the nonchalant freelance journalist lifestyle I am accustomed to. I was slicing, dicing, sprinting to grab ingredients, saucing, plating, gulping beers and grilling lamb. It was a unique and extraordinary experience.

My team ended up making an incredible Molasses Glazed Carpaccio, Fennel Salad, Orange Marmalade.

15-Team 3- Mollassess glazed carpaccio- Joshua

We also served a Molasses Glazed Leg of Lamb, Orange Marmalade, Bourbon and Cous Cous as well as Purple grits with Pimento.

16-Team 3- Mollasses glazed leg of lamb and purple grits 2- Thomas

After we were done in the kitchen, the finished plates were presented al fresco. The chefs and I celebrated our conquest of Aussie lamb by drinking tequila straight from the bottle. The dishes were gorgeous as you can see from the album below. The chefs were able to embrace the versatility of Australian lamb by preparing it in new and interesting ways. There were Asian, Southern, Italian, French and Latin influenced lamb dishes. I unfortunately, did not have enough room to sample everything, but the handful I tried were sensational.

chefs chillin

The experience felt like a once-in-a-lifetime blessed event. The opportunity to feel like a real chef and be surrounded by such profoundly talented and fun culinary masters was humbling. It really cultivated a deeper sense of appreciation for the life of a chef, as well as the beauty of Australian lamb.

News: Documentary Film “Right To Wynwood” Released

PRESS RELEASE

righttowynwood

MIAMI, FL – Nov. 3rd, 2014 – As part of the director’s collective effort to continue shedding light on the history behind Miami’s up-and-coming arts district, short film Right to Wynwood will now be available for online streaming to the general public. Winner for ‘Best Documentary’ at the 2013 Miami Short Film Festival, Right to Wynwood explores the causes and effects of gentrification, documenting how a Puerto Rican neighborhood became purposely unaffordable for its low-income residents and morphed into profitable opportunities of redevelopment for the money hungry.

After a series of interviews with developers, gallerists, artists, Puerto Rican residents and community leaders, producer Camila Álvarez and photographer Natalie Edgar carefully observed and documented the rapidly changing patterns of the community in Wynwood and saw the need to tell the story behind the so-called new Arts District in Miami, FL.

Although both Álvarez and Edgar are keen advocates of the opportunities that Wynwood brings to artists, they feel that creating awareness of how gentrification in Wynwood was developer–led instead of it being artist-led, as it happened in places like Soho in New York, or in Berlin, was necessary.

Even though street art started appearing in the neighborhood organically, when local art collective Primary Flight saw the opportunity to make Wynwood their playground, it soon became a marketing tool, when their efforts were co-opted by developers who realized that “including culture and arts in change was the best way to get the most bang for your buck,” as stated by David Lombardi, one of the first developers to start buying properties in the area, said Camila Álvarez, producer and co-director of the film.

The 21-minute documentary can be streamed online at: www.righttowynwood.com

Vote for the Knight Arts Challenge by November 17, 2014

South Florida decides who wins $20,0000 in Knight Arts Challenge People’s Choice Award
Voting takes place October 20 through November 17, 2014
Voting is via text message or via the Knight Arts People’s Choice Website.

Starting Oct. 20, South Floridians can vote for one of six small and emerging arts organizations vying for $20,000 as the winner of the 2014 Knight Arts Challenge People’s Choice Award.

As a way to shine the spotlight on smaller groups, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is asking the public to vote by text for their favorite of the six nominees to determine the People’s Choice winner. To vote, the public can text the nominees individual code to 22333 in the U.S. or 747-444-3548 toll-free, through 11:59 p.m. Monday Nov. 17. The effort is part of the Knight Arts Challenge, which funds projects that bring South Florida together through the arts.

FATVillage Arts District: A contemporary art exhibition space in Fort Lauderdale, FATVillage showcases large-scale, interactive works. Right now, the space is only open for its monthly art walks. The prize would help FATVillage open more often, with more programming. (Text VOTE1 to 22333)

HICCUP: The acronym stands for Hialeah Contemporary Culture Project, and the collective works to take art out of galleries and into the streets of Northwest Dade. With funding, HICCUP wants to open-up a basis of operations in Hialeah to launch its works and make the city “a place for creative action.” (Text VOTE2 to 22333)

Ife-Ile: The Afro-Cuban dance troupe wants to expand its annual dance festival, and also to create a musical that is based on the lives and influence of Cubans who came to Miami during the Mariel Boatlift. Through its work, IFE-ILE not only provides a place for Cuban-American artists to practice their craft, but also a place to tell their own stories. (Text VOTE3 to 22333)

Key West Art and Historical Society: The group wants to take the art and history of Key West into schools. One idea, for example, is to take the works of local artist Mario Sanchez, who created scenes of the city, into classrooms as a way to understand the island’s and Monroe County’s history and culture. (Text VOTE4 to 22333)

Swampspace: This Design District gallery run by artist Oliver Sanchez wants to continue to provide an exhibition space that focuses on artistic values rather than profit. The prize would help Swampspace fund more large-scale exhibitions and allow artists to bring their big ideas to fruition (Text VOTE5 to 22333)

Mexican American Council: This long-time community group works to reduce the drop out rate and increase cultural opportunities for Mexican-Americans in South Dade. With funding, the council hopes to open a mariachi academy for students where they can both learn to play instruments and understand Mexican culture. (Text VOTE6 to 22333)

Music Monday: Italian HIT Week: Unexpected Sounds from Italy

This Saturday, November 8th, from 7:00pm to 11:00pm, “Unexpected Sounds of Italy” will take place at North Beach Bandshell. “Unexpected Sounds of Italy” is Italian HIT Week, an annual series of top jazz, pop, and fusion artists. The goal of this series is to share Italian with to the world and show that it is more than Mafia movie soundtracks and Mandolin.

This is the 4th edition of the series, which brings fresh Italian artists to the United States. In the past, it has brought Italian legends like Subsonica, Negrita, Mannarino, Canzonieri Grecanico Salentino, Nicola Conte and others. This year, the headline artist is Caparezza, an artist with a unique sound that mixes elements of hip hop with the theatricality of opera. His use of heavy beats, crazy costumes, and creative wordplay have made him one of Italy’s most engaging musicians.

The night will also feature young Italian group Kusto, Italian DJ, and some Italian wine and cuisine to sample.

Viophilia presents: Beautiful Death | Christopher Maslow Solo Exhibition

Viophilia resident artist Christopher Maslow debuts his latest project “Beautiful Death”, a series of paintings and installations that explore flowers as symbols of mortality both in their own short lifespan and in their ceremonial presence throughout a person’s lifetime. These new works examine the parallels and intersections of fragility, superficiality, and transiency shared by flowers and human beings. Maslow unfurls a more personal and subtly alarming significance with each blossom, one that is routinely overlooked in our daily encounters with these lifeforms. In a poignant display of similarities and coincidences, and with a touch of nostalgia, Maslow draws the viewer’s attention inward to recharge the appreciation for being alive.
Show preview is November 8th, 2014, 8:00pm till midnight.
Official show is November 15th, 2014, 8:00pm till midnight.

For viewing appointments after November 15th, please call 321.917.6559 or send an email to viophilia@gmail.com.

ABOUT CHRISTOPHER MASLOW

Maslow is a Miamibased fine artist whose creative practice centers primarily around painting and sculpture. A former Los Angeles resident, Maslow graduated in 2003 from The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising with a degree in product development. He quickly grew into a notable clothing designer and produced for multiple labels in Southern California. A few years into his career as a fashion designer, Maslow found himself gravitating towards street art. Subsequently, after many years of experimentation with multimedia, Maslow realized a greater calling to fine art. Since his transition onto canvas, Maslow has shown artwork in galleries across the United States and has experienced equal success in curation as well. Maslow has been a resident artist at Viophilia since November 2013, and simultaneously runs a studio gallery in his hometown of Melbourne, Florida.

Learn the essentials, and necessity, of diversifying your funding.

David Halpern is a local consultant who has been involved with the finances of nonprofits for more than thirty years. He will provide an overview of the importance of not relying on only one source, or type, of funding. He believes that many Miami-Dade organizations have been overly dependent on government funding.

After briefly discussing alternatives such as philanthropy and earned income, this session will focus on grants that are available from foundations and corporations. Changes in the philanthropic landscape and what funders are now looking for will be discussed by a panel.

Participants will have the opportunity to question the panelists and get practical advice on how to improve their chances of winning grants.

Fixed-gear riders from across the South will take their talent to the track in a test of mental stamina, technical precision and raw strength at Red Bull Mini Drome in Miami on November 8. From its original debut in New Zealand and its roots across the pond, Red Bull Mini Drome will come back for another lap in the states with a stop at Mana Wynwood—a prominent hub for innovation in the Wynwood Arts District.

For starters, a fixed-gear (more affectionately known as a fixie) is a bicycle in its purest, simplest form– no gears and sometimes no brakes. Often considered the ultimate marriage between man and machine, a sub-twenty-pound piece of machinery is the only thing separating your body from the hard, unforgiving ground below.

At Red Bull Mini Drome, skill, speed, balance, and braves are brought together on this steep, shrunken down version of the traditional velodrome. With track speeds exceeding 30mph and course measurements of 46 ft. x 24 ft. and 8 ft. high at the end banking, it is sure to be one of the most challenging and treacherous thrill rides to hit the fixed-gear scene. Competitors will need to pedal hard and watch the ledge if they want to take home the winning title.

Civic Engagement Thursdays: Halloween Gala Benefit for Fridge Art Fair

Seeing as Halloween is tomorrow, today’s civic engagement post is fittingly related to the spooky festivities. The Third Street Garage will be hosting an inaugural fine art Gala to benefit the Fridge Art Fair. The organisation was first created to bring to the Miami audience an amalgam of cultural art coming from all around the region. Artists will also be present to open up a dialogue, which is promised to be equally thought provoking and entertaining.

The events will kick off with an opening reception for “Pairs and Other Lovers” in the Allen Ginsburg Project Room. These exhibitions will feature Linda DiGusta’s drawings of pears, collaborations with the late abstract painter Mark Wiener and even Ginsburg’s critically acclaimed dog paintings. Within the next month, Third Street Garage will also open its doors to the “Freezer Pops” exposition, showcasing masterpieces by artists from Miami and New York.

All proceeds of the Halloween Gala will support these talented artists and will give the opportunity for rising talent and dealers to grow and expose their visions to the public. The aim of this gala is to create a safe haven for art lovers to communicate, interact and mingle. So make sure you check it out!

When: October 31st 2014 – November 23rd 2014

Where: : 300 SW 12th Ave, Miami, FL (On the corner of SW 12 Ave. & SW 3rd St)

Price: $40 (Presale tickets are $10!)

Photographs of Swamptoberfest and People’s Choice Award on 10/22/14

Swamptoberfest and People’s Choice Award at Swampspace Gallery on Wednesday, October 22, 2014.

The director of Swampspace, Oliver Sanchez announced the nomination of the gallery by the Knight Foundation to their People’s Choice Award, South Florida. The announcement is a welcomed recognition for the maverick artist run project space located in the Miami Design District for nearly a decade.

Swampspace was founded on the premise that promoting artistic values increases civility among diverse groups that make up our greater community. It presents monthly exhibitions ranging from visual arts and sculpture to theatrical performance and musical interludes. With nearly fifty exhibitions and critical acclaim, Swampspace is now recognized to be a place both sophisticated enough for arbiters of taste and unvarnished enough for the iconoclast.

The People’s Choice Award highlights small arts groups making a difference in South Florida. It’s part of the Knight Arts Challenge, a community-wide contest funding the best ideas for the arts. Winners of both the challenge and People’s Choice will be announced in December.

The Knight Arts Challenge is a South Florida-based initiative to draw the best and most innovative ideas out of local organizations and individuals seeking to transform the community through the arts. If you have a great idea in the arts, let us know. Take part in a community rising to new levels of artistic achievement and global recognition. In the last six years, 193 ideas were funded. Is this your year?

Voting for People’s Choice Begins October 20th Ends Nov 17.

Public Art Wednesday: Limulidae by Gustavo Oviedo at Young Art Museum

Meet Gustavo Oviedo, an artist who draws inspiration from all over sunny South Florida, both by land and sea. He currently has a mural titled Limulidae at Young Art Museum. Limulidae is an abstract mural that incorporates his ideas about marine environments and resusing materials.

Oviedo has a keen interest in marine environments, and has become an “accidental environmentalist” of sorts, collecting collecting discarded objects from the bay and transforming them into art. Over the past three years, he has explored many of the marine environments of South Florida, and these experiences inspired him to research specific topics, including the horseshoe crab (Limulidae in Latin), which Oviedo chose as the title for his mural because it symbolizes the inspiration behind for the exhibition.

Want to meet the artist? Members of the Young Art Museum have the chance to meet Gustavo during ColorFALL Fest, Saturday November 8th from 1:00-3:00pm.

(Space is limited, please RSVP to membership@youngatartmuseum.org with chosen time slot: A) 1:00-1:30 B) 1:30 – 2:00 C) 2:00-2:30 D) 2:30 – 3:00)

Alberto M. Carvalho, Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools and one of the most admired education leaders in the U.S., will share his insight and vision at Florida International University (FIU) on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. The event, free and open to the public, will be held at the Graham Center Ballroom on FIU’s Modesto Maidique campus.

Alberto M. Carvalho

“The Future of Education: A Conversation with Superintendent Alberto Carvalho” is part of the annual Miami Leadership Dialogues created and presented by the FIU Center for Leadership at the College of Business, in partnership with the Office of the President and, this year, the College of Education.

Carvalho was honored by President Barack Obama and U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan at a White House ceremony on May 1, after he was selected as National Superintendent of the Year by AASA, The School Superintendent’s Association.

Carvalho has served in his current position since 2008. He is a nationally recognized expert on education transformation and finance who has successfully elevated his district’s academic profile and streamlined its business operations and financial systems. Now considered one of the nation’s highest-performing urban school systems, Miami-Dade was named as the 2014 College Board Advanced Placement Equity and Excellence District of the Year, as well as the 2012 winner of the Broad Prize for Urban Education.

A versatile leader, Carvalho is also the self-appointed principal of two award-winning schools, the Primary Learning Center and the iPrep Academy, and has served as President of the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents.

Carvahlo was recently named by Scholastic Administrator as one of “The Fantastic Five” educators making a difference in America. He has been awarded a number of honorary degrees including a Doctor of Public Service by FIU and has been featured on CNN, NBC, and ABC and in publications such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, District Administration Magazine and The Christian Science Monitor.

The Miami Leadership Dialogues continues its quest.

The Center for Leadership’s annual Miami Leadership Dialogues provide an opportunity for speakers to share their perspectives on the current state of, and future opportunities for the South Florida community. Speakers are recognized community leaders from business, government and civic organizations, who also use the opportunity to field questions from community members.

Pinecrest, Fla. – Internationally-renowned contemporary artist and filmmaker Philip Haas will display his acclaimed FOUR SEASONS installation November 16th to April 6, 2015 in Pinecrest Gardens’ lush botanical sanctuary.

Consisting of four 15-foot-tall busts, Haas’s FOUR SEASONS bring 16th-century Renaissance portraiture by Italian artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo into modern times through a transformation of scale, material and dimensionality.

While Arcimboldo’s paintings present each subject in profile, Haas’s unconventional twist on the classical form allows visitors the opportunity to walk around the sculptures, to see the subjects from all sides, and from many different and surprising vantage points.

Each work represents an individual season and is distinctly unusual and extravagant. AUTUMN is comprised of fall vegetables, ripe grapes and leaves turning color. Weathered bark and verdant moss make up WINTER’s stoic bust, which sits on top of a cloak of straw. SPRING evokes rebirth and vibrancy with a face consisting of rose-colored petals and hair brimming with elaborate flowers. SUMMER’s hue is a variety of sun-kissed yellows; its face and headdress sprout onions, garlic, corn, peas, a multiplicity of fruit, and a cucumber nose. The sculptures are made of pigmented and painted fiberglass, supported by interior steel frames.

“I started the FOUR SEASONS project wanting to bring Arcimboldo’s Renaissance painted nature imagery into the 21st-century physical world. I can’t think of a better venue than Pinecrest Gardens to inaugurate the Florida tour of this work, where the sculptures will arrive in the one of the oldest outposts of the New World, having fled their earlier homes as paintings in European museums, to now rest, and blend in, for an extended period amid the lush tropical flora, rock formations and historic water features,” said Haas.

In marrying sculpture, painting, film, and architecture, Philip Haas has created a contemporary visual vocabulary all his own. He describes his process as “sculpting by thinking”. His groundbreaking artwork has been featured by museums, including the National Gallery of Art (Washington DC), the Kimbell Art Museum (Fort Worth, Texas), Dulwich Picture Gallery (United Kingdom), and Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris). In the public realm, his work has been exhibited in the Piazza del Duomo (Milan) and the Gardens of Versailles (France). His feature films include ANGELS & INSECTS, THE MUSIC OF CHANCE and UP AT THE VILLA. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, as well as other awards. He has taught in the visual arts and creative writing programs at Princeton University. He lives and works in New York and London.

FOUR SEASONS by Philip Haas is the latest commission of Pinecrest Garden’s art program.

Talk About It Tuesday: Miami Open Coffee Club Unleashes New Mentoring Format

The Miami Open Coffee Club (MOCC) is a collaboration between FIU’s Pino Global Entrepreneurship Center and MapYourStartup.co. In the past, the meetup has typically held “speed-mentoring” events, which partners with mentors for short periods (around 30 minutes). Starting on October 30, however, MOCC is introducing a a new meetup style, which will include “fireside chats,” bringing in well-known local entrepreneurs and subject matter experts to provide immediate advice in front of a live-studio audience. This interactive discussion style can serve as an example of what a meeting with a mentor, coach, prospective board member, and even prospective might look like.

The meetups are held at the FIU Downtown on Brickwell, located at 1101 Brickwell Avenue, 10th floor. They will start at 7:30am. As mentioned before, the first meetup with the new format will be held on Thursday, October 30, and will feature Xavier Cossard from Plarity and Charles Irizarry from Rokk3r Labs. The second meetup will take place on November 20.

The goal of this new, collaborative format is to benefit the entrepreneurial community at large.

The Cleveland Orchestra opens its 2014-15 Miami season with Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez. Inspired by the fountains and gardens of the palace of Aranjuez, Rodrigo’s concerto is elegant, distinctively Spanish. It is arguably the best known composition for guitar, thanks in no small part to the extraordinary beauty of its central Adagio.
Award-winning classical guitarist Miloš Karadaglić joins the Orchestra for these concerts. “Karadaglić is a guitarist of superior musical and technical gifts who allows his personality to sing through the music with taste and intelligence.” (The Guardian)

Since 2005, PULSE Contemporary Art Fair has been the premiere satellite fair for the discovery and acquisition of cutting-edge contemporary art. With annual editions in Miami Beach and New York City, the fair cultivates a supportive environment for its international community of galleries and provides a platform for their growth and expansion in the contemporary art market. From its inception, PULSE has presented thoughtfully-curated exhibitions and ever-evolving programming that reflect the fair’s commitment to making the visitor experience a dynamic one.

PULSE Contemporary Art Fair is delighted to announce its 2014 Miami Beach programming highlights and PULSE Prize nominees for its tenth anniversary edition. With over 170 exhibiting artists presented by a select group of exhibitors from Asia, Europe and the Americas, PULSE Miami Beach will offer visitors a dynamic environment in which to discover and collect cutting-edge contemporary art.

PULSE Projects, the fair’s presentation of large-scale installations and performance, will feature a piece by Ontario-based artist Shayne Dark, presented by Art Mûr. Tangle Wood (below), Dark’s meditative 8x18x10’ painted wood sculpture, is a reference to log driving on North American rivers in the early part of the century. Jenna Spevack will also present Birds of Brooklyn, an audio installation that brings the sounds of displaced and bygone birds to sites in Brooklyn and Miami, courtesy of the artist and Mixed Greens.

PULSE Play, the fair’s platform for new media and video art, will be presented by Tumblr and curated by new media scholar Lindsay Howard. For PULSE Play, Howard will select a group of artists whose work is thematically linked from among exhibiting galleries. “Video and New Media Art have become essential components of contemporary art collections. The artists included in PULSE Play are experimenting with the aesthetics and technical aspects of emergent technologies, through topics such as religion, poetry, human form, light, and performance,” explains Lindsay Howard. The PULSE Play selections will be on view on PULSE’s Tumblr, and at the fair.

PULSE is honored to present the PULSE Prize—a cash grant awarded directly to a jury-selected artist of distinction who is being exhibited in a solo booth at the fair. The New York 2014 winner of the PULSE Prize was Hassan Hajjaj, presented by GUSFORD | los angeles.

Lauren Shapiro
and
Maitejosune Urrecgaga

The ceremonial entrance will leave you charmed by Lady Lauren Shapiro and Mrs. Maitejosune Urrechaga. The two artist have invited you to a dwelling place much like “Neverland”

The two queens of Triumphant Spells share a love for magical and mystical realms. Be ready to experience drawings, sculptures, installations and what not’s. the unusual few and widely separated characters of their work will give light to the fine incantation.

Mrs. Maitejosune Urrechagas artwork has been displayed national and internationally since 2005. Her DIY attitude is very compelling and very much alive which audiences continue to respond with enthusiasm.

She has grown to fancy towards group projects, which usually include oddball outcomes such as designing mini refrigerators to pimp my kart to the mind the snails project which ran during Miami’s Art Basel on Dec of 2006-2007, which she received a nod from the Miami new Times in their Best of Issue. TO her musical performance Pocket of Lollipops that joined forces with her husband and received top 5 song in South Florida.

She has curated, exhibited and performed at various art spaces and live music venues around the US. Including Dorsch Gallery, SwampSpace, Hollywood Art and Culture Center, Verge Art Fair, ArtFormz Gallery, and the traditional rock settings.
She was one of three artist chosen to paint the 7-foot alligator sculptures for Sawgrass Mills “Paying tribute to woman”

Lady Lauren Shapiro
is a South Florida native, and her artwork contains elements of both nature and the supernatural. Living in Florida has influenced her work through an appreciation and deep fascination with the ocean and all of its life forms. Lauren holds a BFA from Florida Atlantic University, and is currently a Graduate Fellow pursing an MFA in ceramics at the University of Miami.
She has fully immersed herself in the South Florida artist community as both teacher and artist. Previous to applying for candidacy of a Masters at the University of Miami, Lauren worked as an outreach instructor and in-house workshop leader at the Boca Museum of art and ceramics instructor at the Boca Raton Art School.
Her work in this series is inspired by metamorphosis, the connection between humans and nature, and how the actions of one will affect the other. The imagery that can be found in the artwork includes textures in nature, symbols from legends and folklore, as well as natural science and the microscopic world. Also turning to her dreams and subconscious thoughts she relies on intuition to guide her through the development of the work.
Her work has been exhibited at Museums and galleries in South Florida, to name a few: the Projects Space in FAT Village, The Lowe Museum, Girls Club, Locust Projects, and she has work in the private collection of Francie Bishop Good.

Art students from 15 Miami-Dade Schools who created sculptures from junk bicycles will compete this Saturday for the prize of “Best Recycling Project” in a charity benefit contest hosted by Gran Fondo Italia.

Circo Massimo Entertainment (CME), with the help of the City of Miami Beach, collected junk bicycles from the streets and gave them to 15 schools of the Miami-Dade district, selected by ODLI, Inc. (Organization for the Development of the Italian Language) and IIPA (Italian International Parent Association) under the Italian Consulate patronage. Students have disassembled, attached, painted and glued parts of the bikes to create a unique piece of art, as a free expression of kids’ creativity.

Artworks will be available to purchase at auction with 100% of the proceeds to benefit the MCH Foundation (Miami Children’s Health Foundation).

The three winning artworks will be on display in the “History of Italian Cycling” exhibit at the Coral Gables Museum, from Oct. 28th to Nov. 7th, and all the fifteen artworks will be at the EXPO of the 2014 GRAN FONDO ITALIA in the weekend of Nov. 8th & 9th in Coconut Grove, at 2500, Pan American Drive.

Talk About it Tuesday: Emerging Technology Business Showcase Displays the Potential of Miami's Startups

In recent times, more focus has been placed on Miami’s growing startup ecosystem. Miami has even been given nicknames like “Silicon Beach” and “the Internet Coast”- but where do these nicknames come from? Investors are sending scouts to South Florida, working spaces and business incubators are becoming more and more common, and entrepreneurial projects like The Knight Project, Endeavor Miami, and YPO Florida, are serving as catalysts for this startup culture to thrive.

Despite all this success, there is still a lot that needs to be done. One of these challenges is how to bring early-stage companies in south Florida who show great potential together with quality capital and dedicated investors. This challenge is why events like the Emerging Technology Business Showcase are so important.

The 17th annual Emerging Technology Business Showcase, held by the Enterprise Development Corp of South Florida and the Florida Venture Forum is a showcase for local emerging companies to bring their innovation to the stage. Over 250 attendees will gather to meet and network with potential investors, clients, partners, and mentors, and hear from industry experts. The goal is to provide investors and companies the opportunity to connect with one another.

Interested in attending? The showcase is being held on Oct. 23 from 9AM to 6:30PM at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus.
