Sunday brunch guests are encouraged to gather as many artfully decorated surprise-filled eggs as they can find throughout the property. As a result of a national study of local neighborhood initiatives, John McKnight and his long-time colleague, Jody Kretzmann, created the Asset-Based Community Development strategy for community building. Together, they co-authored the basic guide to asset based community development, Building Communities from the Inside Out: A Path Toward Identifying and Mobilizing a Community’s Assets. This book has become one of the nation’s best-selling guides to community development, and the methods it outlines are now utilized world-wide.
McKnight has also written three additional books – The Careless Society: Community and its Counterfeits and, together with co-author Peter Block, The Abundant Community: Awakening the Power of Families and Neighborhoods. His latest publication, An Other Kingdom: Departing the Consumer Culture, was co-authored by Peter Block, Walter Brueggemann and John McKnight.

The Big Serve is a philanthropic event presented by Jonathan Nussbaum, President of LaceClips, in an effort to provide 400 inner-city youth with access to the sport of tennis and engage the residents of Miami Beach with children in Greater Miami-Dade County.

On Friday, children from the four non-profit organizations will be able to enjoy and partake in four stations including meet and greet/autograph opportunities with pro tennis players and notable local celebrities, a tennis clinic with lessons from pro tennis players, a fitness station featuring celebrity personal trainers provided by Fast Twitch and a concession station with drinks provided by Menin Hospitality and Icelandic Glacial and food provided by Shake Shack and David’s Café. DJ Irie will provide beats alongside the Miami Heat’s MC, Uptown Dale, to ensure kids have a fun, energetic afternoon to remember.

The United States Tennis Association will organize and provide resources and follow-up locations where kids can play tennis after the event. Children will also receive a tote bag provided by Head with various items including tennis balls provided by Biscayne Tennis, a Head Tennis racquet, and a t-shirt provided by Jonathan Nussbaum and Becker & Poliakoff. All proceeds from the event will benefit Overtown Youth Center, Irie Foundation, Wade’s World Foundation and the Miami Beach Tennis Foundation. Other sponsors include Honey Shine Inc., World Red Eye, Menin Hospitality, City of Miami Beach, LaceClips, Fast Twitch, the Mourning Family Foundation, and Cox Media Group.

The Florida Renaissance Festival is produced by the nationally acclaimed Bobby Rodriguez Productions and strives to create an entertaining and cultural experience for adults and children alike. The Florida Renaissance Festival at Deerfield Beach’s Quiet Waters Park will be open weekends beginning February 13th from 10 a.m. to sunset until March 27th. Open President’s Day, February 15th. While costumes are not necessary for admittance, thousands of people each year enhance their experience by donning garb from the Renaissance era, or participate in one of the festival’s special themed weekends by dressing up as their favorite pirate, time traveler, fairy, or fantasy character!

More than two million people have seen the Florida Renaissance Festival in Deerfield Beach during its royal period in South Florida. This 16th Century production features more than 100 costumed performers, 12 stages with continuous entertainment and 20 stage acts from around the world.

Lightning Has Struck Twice. Soul Legend Timmy Thomas, who serenaded the world in 1973 with his million-selling smash “Why Can’t We Live Together,” has conquered the world again. Thanks to Drake’s beyond-obvious sample of “Why Can’t We Live Together” in his monster worldwide hit “Hotline Bling,” the world is dancing yet again to Timmy Thomas’ groove. 2016 will find Timmy Thomas releasing a string of singles on Overtown Records and one on Saustex Media, prior to his comeback album. His collaborators range from the late Steve Jobs to Timmy’s old hitmaking crew at TK records. They were recorded in the manner Soul Music deserves: Living and Breathing on analog tape – so it may be released on vinyl. Timmy Thomas famously sang “People Are Changing” on his first LP. The people may have changed, but their love of his soulful groove remains the same.

About the Bird Road Art Walk:
Five years strong, the Bird Road Art Walk continues to bring artists and collectors together. On the 3rd Saturday of each month, artists’ open their studios, along with alternative spaces and galleries that dot the industrial area along SW 74 Ave & SW 75 Ave.

The Florida International University Department of Architecture’s Eco Couture Recycling Fashion Show will launch its successful event for a third year in a row. The fashion show will feature a variety of outfits that are completely made from recycled materials. The event, which was created with the purpose of promoting sustainability through fashion, strives to educate and inspire the community about good recycling habits and an environmentally-friendly lifestyle. This year’s runway is expected to showcase more than 50 outfits, all of which will be reusable. All proceeds from this event go towards scholarships for students in the FIU Department of Architecture.

The Eco Couture Recycling Fashion Show is hosted by Event Founder, Artistic Director, and FIU Architecture alumna Amira Ajlouni ’14 and Event Partner, Artistic Director, and current Architecture graduate student Jennifer Luis. Kick off your weekend in our heated pool with a HYDRORIDER AquaCycle class with NYC-based fitness guru, Zack Schares; plus a yoga session beachside with local Miami reiki master and power yoga instructor, Natalie Hernandez. Nautilus, a SIXTY Hotel, has been named the official hotel of world-renowned dance label Spinnin’ Records during Miami Music Week from March 16 – 20, 2016. This partnership will launch Spinnin’ Hotel featuring events at the hotel’s poolside Nautilus Cabana Club with top DJs and surprise appearances throughout the weekend.

The recently opened hotel’s poolside Nautilus Cabana Club, with luxurious cabanas and a playful lawn, is the ideal location for Spinnin’ Hotel. Join us for a Knight News Challenge on Libraries workshop. We’ll get to meet and greet, hear from local experts including Rebecca Fishman Lipsey of 100 Great Ideas, and Gia Arbogast

The New Tropic will lead a group brainstorming and design workshop after to help flesh out some ideas.

On Feb. 24, Knight Foundation’s second News Challenge on Libraries will open for applications. We will be offering applicants a chance to share winnings of $3 million for projects that answer the question: How might libraries serve 21st century information needs?

For centuries, libraries have been the keepers of public knowledge, spaces for human connection and educators for the next generations of learners. For this challenge, we hope to unearth new ways to advance libraries and their collaborators to meet the needs of their communities and carry these ideals into the future. T

The challenge will be open for applications from Feb. 24 to March 21. Anyone working in the U.S. on U.S. – based projects can apply, including public and private libraries, businesses, nonprofits and individuals. Projects have the chance to receive funding anywhere between $100,000 – $500,000 for a grant period of one to two years.

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion: Exploring L.A. in a Miracle Dress

We all have big dreams and seemingly insignificant pero important dreams. One of the latter for us was to one day find a dress like the pink velour one Hallie wore in “My Date with the President’s Daughter”—the one dramatically revealed at minute 7 of this YouTube clip from the movie. After years of passively searching, we finally found it (albeit a more hipster tunic version but perfect nonetheless)! The long-awaited dress was waiting for us inside of the Hyden Yoo Boutique on Abbot Kinney where we came across it last Saturday while shopping with our friend Sarah. Finding this dress was one small part of a five day-long marathon of amazing juju that carried us through our recent Los Angeles trip (of which you will hear more about on ThankYouMiami.com next week) because it turns out it is impossible to find Hyden Yoo’s women collection anywhere on the internets.

Because this outfit was a miracle a long time in the making, we naturally bumped all other OOTDs planned for Sunday Brunch to make room for this fabulous dress. So, on Sunday, armed with our new dress, our favorite sunnies, and our favorite ASKA Collection booties (you may remember them from our last #ThankYouMiami for Fashion post because we love them so much we wear them everyday) we headed to The Rockefeller in Manhattan Beach with our sister Lucy and her friends. The tunic cut was perfect for brunching—ergo, extremely applicable to Miami life—because it allowed our bellies to expand for unlimited mimosas, a massive plate of chilaquiles, zucchini fries, and donut holes and still looked flattering. And, afterward when we went on a post-brunch buzz drive down the California coast blasting Mariah Carey’s “Emotions” with the windows down, it turned out to be the prettiest, most comfortable outfit for that too. #winning.

B.E.A.T. is organizing an event for March 2016 called BEAT the Clock at a local Miami venue, Jada Cole’s. BEAT the Clock will feature a silent auction, with all proceeds going to the funding of seminars and workshops.

The focus is to raise the funds needed in organizing and executing our seminars and workshops. Each seminar costs anywhere from $950 – $2000, depending on guest speakers, rental hall, staff, and number of attendees to name a few.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, or MOCA, presents singer Timmy Thomas, best known for his 1973 #1 hit, “Why Can’t We Live Together.” Thanks to Drake’s sample of “Why Can’t We Live Together” in his worldwide hit “Hotline Bling,” the world is dancing yet again to Thomas’ groove. We kicked off SOBEWFF®’s 15th anniversary with longtime friend Giada De Laurentiis! Host of multiple shows on Food Network, including Giada in Italy and long-running hit primetime series Food Network Star, she brought a taste of her namesake restaurant GIADA at The Cromwell in Las Vegas to the sands of South Beach.  We joined the widely recognized queen of Italian cuisine who hosted more than 30 of the nation’s greatest chefs serving up dishes originating from various regions of Italy behind the iconic Delano Hotel. We perused Piedmont, trotted through Tuscany, savored Sardinia, canvased Campania, sauntered through Sicily, and more – while sinking our toes into the sparkling white sands of South Beach. Growing up in Miami, Florida, LeNard was always surrounded by many different musical styles. His parents had an extensive music collection ranging from Classical, Jazz, Hymns and the funk of James Brown.

LeNard has shared the stage with a number of highly respectable jazz artists such as: Nnenna Freelon, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kenny Drew Jr., and Harry Allen. In May of 2006, LeNard was named BEST JAZZ ARTIST, by the Miami New Times magazine.

Come explore Miami’s historic downtown like an architect! See our city’s landmark buildings through an architect’s eyes, using a sketchbook and pen. Learn to draw by sketching some of downtown Miami’s historic landmarks, like the Dade County Courthouse, the Church of Gesù and the old US Post Office Building, home of MCAD! This 2-hour course is open to beginners and novices of all ages who love architecture and want to explore it through drawing.

Joaquim Perez (University of Miami) and David Rifkind (FIU), local architects and educators, will introduce you to basic drawing techniques and lead you on the urban adventure brief sketching tour of downtown Miami. A good pair of walking shoes, maybe a hat and certainly a sketchbook and drawing implements will come in handy!

American artist John Dowd shows his new series titled “Tropical Gardens: The Contemporary Florida Landscape”” at the Williams McCall Gallery South of Fifth. Kicking off with an artist reception that is open to the public on Friday, March 4th at 6 pm, the exhibit will run until March 30th.

John Dowd shares, “This show is a further exploration of my interest in the landscape of Southern Florida… the surreal juxtaposition of the geometric modernist architecture often with vivid colors set against the lush tropical vegetation… the highly artificial night lighting creating a sense of the romantic and yet unreal… dreamlike … vacillating between the worlds of attraction and detachment. This is what I see.”

Dowd received a degree in architecture at Notre Dame and further advanced his studies in Rome. His work has been exhibited throughout the country with numerous works held in private, corporate and museum collections. He was awarded the Altman Prize “Grand Prize for Landscape“ from the National Academy of Design. Dowd currently resides in Provincetown and New York City.

Concrete Beach will be celebrating the birthday of Sola, the mysterious matriarch of the brewery. BrightStar Credit Union is participating in the 21st annual fundraiser, Clueless on Las Olas, to benefit Partners in Education (PIE). Inspired by the popular board game “Clue,” the mystery themed event will take place on Thursday, March 10th, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Proceeds from Clueless on Las Olas will benefit PIE programs that assist public schools and students in Broward County by developing partnerships with local businesses and community organizations.

Clueless on Las Olas is an interactive murder mystery, street party where participants solve a fictitious case after discovering seven planted clues along Fort Lauderdale’s Las Olas Boulevard. This year’s theme is “Lotto Demise.”

Following check-in at Stranahan House and Laura Ward Park, participants will enter a street party where they will be given the mystery plot synopsis and meet the “suspects” before embarking on a search for additional clues along Las Olas Blvd. There are 17 clue sites, including American Social, Kilwins, Royal Pig Pub and Kitchen, and Dazzles Boutique. At 8:30 p.m., the final clue will be read and murder suspect accusations cast.

Registration is $35 per person in advance or $40 at the event. Tickets can be purchased online at www.browardpartners.com. Participants can play individually or get a team together. For every three advance ticket purchases, participants get one free ticket. Each person will receive a gift bag and event t-shirt. An appetizer and dessert buffet as well as beverages will be provided. Event sponsors include BrightStar Credit Union, Aetna, The Miami Herald and 102.7 the Beach Radio. On the heels of a successful introduction last year, this Orient-themed weekend is making its second appearance in the Florida Renaissance Festival. We’re taking it #BeyondBasel with a one night exhibition that brings together everything that makes Miami the art capital that it is the rest of the year in one amazing space at The Citadel, the newest enclave of innovation in Little Haiti.

Miami has always been a land of open doors, each one representing a unique opportunity. Doors of Perception challenges Miami’s top artists to let their creativity flow using a humble door monolithically mounted within the cavernous space that played host to Miami Art Week’s Superfine House of Art and Design. Artists will be on hand to engage with their work and each door will be available for purchase at an accessible price of $2500 per door. Each door is a one of a kind beautiful yet functional piece that can be either showcased within your home as an art piece or installed as a working door.

Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre presents an entire day of theatre fun for the whole family at Kids Fest Family Day 2016 on Saturday, February 27. This year’s Kids Fest will feature two performances of the Musical Theatre for Young Audiences production of The Jungle Book at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. A ticket to either performance of the featured show secures patrons a Kids Fest Day Pass to enjoy several other great events and activities.

Kids Fest Family Day gives Actors’ Playhouse the opportunity to share the musical with the community and also integrate exciting cultural experiences for young people. Winter Party Festival teams up with Miami-Dade College’s Miami International Film Festival for the screening of SUMMERTIME, a French film with English subtitles. The year is 1971.
