About Jump N Funk
Jump N Funk, America’s original Afrobeat party, was born of the collective vision and efforts of Rich Medina, Debbie Sealy and Trevor Schoonmaker. The idea was to raise awareness around the King of Afrobeat, at a time when many were unaware of Fela Kuti, his music and his legacy. Rich Medina combined forces with his studio production partner Mark Hines (The Marksmen) to expand the JNF experience with live video and instrumentalist performance elements. It has become an amazing presentatino of sight and sound unique to JNF.
Medina has cemeted his reputation as an elite DJ taking audiences on a sonic journey through Hip Hop, House, Soul, Afrobeat, Funk, Breaks, Rare Grooves and Dance Classics.
JNF has grown from an intimate afterwork gathering, to an event avidly attended by hundreds in venues around the glove, including Italy, London, Paris, Tokyo and more.

Captivating, soul stirring, earthy and funky. These are just some of the words used to describe the song stylings of LeNard Rutledge. Growing up in Miami, Florida, LeNard was always surrounded by many different musical styles. His parents had an extensive music collection ranging from Classical, Jazz, Hymns and the funk of James Brown.

LeNard has shared the stage with a number of highly respectable jazz artists such as: Nnenna Freelon, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kenny Drew Jr., and Harry Allen. In May of 2006, LeNard was named BEST JAZZ ARTIST, by the Miami New Times magazine.

“LeNard Rutledge is usually compared, aptly, to the legendary Lou Rawls. Like Rawls, Rutledge’s classy elegance is often permeated by the raw passion of his church choir work.” (Miami New Times)

John Dowd shares, “This show is a further exploration of my interest in the landscape of Southern Florida… the surreal juxtaposition of the geometric modernist architecture often with vivid colors set against the lush tropical vegetation… the highly artificial night lighting creating a sense of the romantic and yet unreal… dreamlike … vacillating between the worlds of attraction and detachment. This is what I see.”

Dowd received a degree in architecture at Notre Dame and further advanced his studies in Rome. His work has been exhibited throughout the country with numerous works held in private, corporate and museum collections. He was awarded the Altman Prize “Grand Prize for Landscape“ from the National Academy of Design. Dowd currently resides in Provincetown and New York City.

Winter Party Festival teams up with Miami-Dade College’s Miami International Film Festival for the world premier screening of the film RESTLESS LOVE. This Brazilian film (in Portuguese with English subtitles) focuses on three best friends: Julia has chosen to remain blind to the obvious signs that her current boyfriend is a two-timing cad, but her eyes are forced wide-open when she discovers that she is pregnant with his child. Diego (played by pop-rock star Thiago Pethit in his big-screen debut) is a party boy with daddy issues who can’t stay faithful to his sweet, dependable boyfriend. Micaela, meanwhile, is wasting her time chasing a bisexual actress who won’t even acknowledge their shared intimacy in private. Following the screening, the film’s director, Vera Egito, will hold a Q&A and Winter Party Festival will host a reception with a Grey Goose open bar.

ADL Florida will hold its inaugural Miami In Concert Against Hate. This inspirational evening will honor local individuals who have demonstrated tremendous courage, compassion, and determination in confronting hate and intolerance. It’s a celebration of what Miami stands for.

These extraordinary stories will be narrated by host Larry King and uniquely interwoven with music from the Nu Deco Ensemble of the New World Center. Honorees: Robert Gant, actor, Queer as Folk; Chief Frank Kitzerow, Town of Jupiter Police Department – worked tirelessly to investigate the hate-crime murder of Guatemalan teenager Onesimo Lopez-Ramos; family of Onesimo Lopez-Ramos; Angela King, reformed racist skinhead; the late acclaimed journalist Steven Sotloff (z”l), murdered by ISIS.

By featuring local sustainable seafood, wild and nonnative species, and organically farmed produce, PREY transforms consumption in a manner that helps restore and rehabilitate human and planetary health. Items found on the menu are indigenous to Florida and Chef Bun will hunt, dive and forage for all himself.

Global Arts Project, Inc., presents the second installment of the FREE Artscape Concert Series in Collins Park, celebrating Brazilian Carnival with Batuke Samba Funk.

Batuke is a high energy Brazilian band that mixes rhythms such as Funk from the 70’s with Afro Samba, Brazilian Big Band, Batucada, Soul, and R&B. The band attracts a mixed crowd with people from all ages and nationalities dancing in every performance. The goal of Batuke is to “brazilianize” American sounds and “americanize” Brazilian sounds in a perfect balanced fusion. Samba dancers will be featured with the band.

“Imagine Stomp! crossed with an out-of-control drum circle. Batuke Samba Funk is anchored in Miami by its core musicians and their expert displays of percussion, incorporating the traditional sounds of samba with jazz and funk via an ad hoc cache of found percussion instruments….”
Abel Folgar, Miami New Times (2011)

The cast of Palace Queens, hosted by Missy Meyakie LePaige, have prepared an array of exciting theme numbers for the evening! “Killing Me Softly”, “I Will Survive”, “More Than A Woman”… all the classics, baby! We strongly recommend making table reservations for this night, as last year’s Anniversary party was totally ka-packed. érémy Gobé, who lives and works in Paris, imbues objects that he finds in his path with new purpose. In his room-sized installation, Freedom Leading Wool, Gobé uses fabric and mesh to create a dramatic enveloping space. The red wool, claimed from a shuttered factory in rural France, recalls a dying industry and its displaced craftsmen. This work references the 1830 masterpiece by Eugène Delacroix, Liberty Leading the People, recalling the movement, drama and patriotism of that iconic work. On view through FEB 28, 2016

In addition to this installation, a new work by Gobé, Nature’s Imagination Scares Me, will be on view in the storefront galleries at 23rd and Collins Avenue as part of tc: temporary contemporary, the Bass Museum of Art’s public art program.

“Provocative, intelligent, top-notch musical theater… The creators deserve to light some nice, big Cuban cigars… They have written a complex story, told exceptionally well.” –Berkshire On Stage, after a critically acclaimed sold-out run Off-Broadway.

Music by Salomon Lerner
Lyrics By Len Schiff
Book and Direction by Michel Hausmann

SYNOPSIS
The Golem of Havana tells the story of a Hungarian-Jewish family living in Batista’s Havana on the brink of the Cuban Revolution. When their maid’s son, a guerrilla fighter, is injured, they must choose between protecting him and guarding their first fragile grasp on prosperity since their arrival. The Golem of Havana weaves together the music and traditions of two worlds, asking questions about family, community, religion, and politics.

ABOUT
Developed at the prestigious New York Theatre Workshop, The Golem of Havana has enjoyed sold-out productions Off-Broadway at La MaMa E.T.C. in New York City and in the Berkshires at Barrington Stage Company, an award-winning theatre company in downtown Pittsfield, MA. There, the musical became the fastest selling new show in the theatre’s history. The musical was also a Richard Rodgers Award finalist for New Musical Theatre and an Independent Reviews of New England Award (IRNE) nominee for best play.

Art Deco Weekend is happy to present the 6th Annual Art Deco Weekend Fashion Show. The Miami Design Preservation League has partnered with TATYANA, Iris Chase Designs, Beauty Touches Group, Belinda Designs and Beauty Schools of America to bring you an exciting hour of Art Deco Fashion and music!

MDPL’s resident artist, Iris Chase worked with Tatyana designers to pick out the best 1930s and 40s Tatyana creations to be presented in the Art Deco Weekend Fashion Show. The best part? You can purchase your favorite styles and jewelry in the Official Art Deco Gift Shop following the show! The selected pieces reflect women’s style during the Art Deco era. Additionally, Belinda Designs has lent us a small selection of her couture 1920s dresses and headpieces for the show!

The models are delegates of the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants and will walk to runway to modernized blends of famous 1930s tunes. Their hair and make-up will be done by the students from the Beauty School of America in some of our favorite 1930s and 40s looks. Think pin curls and red lipstick. Be sure to come early and save your spot. This has become one of the most popular events at Art Deco Weekend!

The “Eve of Midas” a Golden New Year’s Affair will take place end of this month, at The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach. The annual event previously known as “Blanc”, (a white party), has built a loyal following for the last two years. On December 31, 2015 faithful attendees and new ones alike, are invited to experience the new incarnation: The “Eve of Midas”.

Knowing well there are many options in South Florida to celebrate the New Year, The Ritz –Carlton, South Beach will be the only option for those seeking an elegant affair offering an open bar including champagne, dancing, specialty acts, music by DJ Chris Valencia and Malone, and an array of performances throughout the night.

The ideal location is the perfect place to ring in the New Year, as the iconic hotel which is located on South Beach, lies on Miami’s most famous beach. The resort is located just steps from Ocean Drive, and Lincoln Road. Guests are invited to experience a unique evening created by some of the most well-known names in Miami nightlife and hospitality. Surrounded by a shimmery atmosphere, party guests will get to take in visuals and sounds that are the perfect balance of opulence and sophistication. The venue will appear to have been brushed by gold, for the night.

In addition to the all-inclusive package, event-goers will walk the “gold carpet” at the luxury location, unlike any other. Known as a venue that truly caters to the most discerning guests, this “golden affair” will take place on a property used to being a temporary home away from home to dignitaries and celebrities. For one evening, it will welcome hundreds to celebrate the New Year with an unobstructed view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Produced by AMPM Presents, the team behind this special event carefully selected the entertainment, to transport guests for the evening. From the glittering lights, to the glistening pool which will serve as one of the many “stages”, guests are in for a tantalizing experience. Greek mythology served as inspiration for this one-of-a-kind New Year’s party. But entertainment, inspired by many eras, will come to life in the color synonymous with royalty, mysticism, magic, and good fortune. 2016 will arrive at The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach, all dressed up in gold.

The attire suggestion is “Miami Gold Chic” which will no doubt inspire fashionistas to don their very best for that special selfie at 12AM!
*Guests are reminded to please drink responsibly.*

More Fun, More Friends, More Magic in 2016!
In its 39th year, the Miami Beach festival is the premier event of the Miami Design Preservation League – A free community cultural experience for everyone to enjoy from morning until night.

This year the Miami Design Preservation League welcomes friends AIA Miami, Bass Museum of Art, Fantasy Theatre Factory, HistoryMiami, Life Is Art, Miami Center of Architecture and Design, North Shore Historic District Neighborhood Association, Flamingo Park Neighborhood Association, Perez Art Museum Miami, South Florida Lindy Collective, South Florida Region Antique Automobile Club of America, The Original Miami Beach Antique Show, Viernes Culturales, Wolfsonian/FIU and more to Art Deco Weekend.

With friends like these, you can expect over-the-top everything at what’s become, over almost two generations, South Florida’s dazzling annual kickoff. It’s Art Deco Weekend (ADW), the January 15–17 festival of art and architecture on Ocean Drive between 5th and 13th streets—and, like a party hosted by your favorite friends, it’s not to be missed.

39 years ago, the Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL) made history by calling attention to the Art Deco buildings that lined Ocean Drive and filled much of South Beach by spotlighting them during a weekend festival.

It didn’t happen overnight, but it happened. The city’s beloved Art Deco architecture has not only been saved, it’s put Miami Beach on the worldwide map as a glamorous, tropical holiday destination and a dream-come-true place to live and do business. But historic preservation, like sand castles and barrier islands, requires constant vigilance to survive. Today, the MDPL, founded to save the Art Deco neighborhood, throws this community cultural festival to celebrate architecture, preservation, education, history, advocacy, art, entertainment and the Miami culture we all love.

In 2016, MDPL and friends provide more excitement and innovation than ever before. That promises festival goers (you!) more antiques, more art, more artisan vendors, more jazz, more dance, more libations, more history, lectures and education, more kid friendly interactive fun, more sightings of Deco-era characters and sexy vintage cars—MORE MAGIC – more everything you’ve come to love about ADW. Take a peek:
The Original Miami Beach Antique Show brings the Antique Design Pavilion and Speakeasy Lounge to the beach, showcasing and selling the finest, funnest antique, and retro Art Deco and Mid-Century Modern furniture and accessories.

* South Florida Region Antique Automobile Club of America celebrates 60 years by hosting more cars (and more memories) at the popular Classic Car Show on Saturday and Sunday.
* Life Is Art curates the Art Park at Art Deco Weekend. Don’t miss the live painting demonstrations and performance pop-ups at the Art Bar in Lummas park.
* South Florida Lindy Collective is committed to spreading the gospel of swing dancing. Dress the part, put on your dance shoes and join them on the beachside dance floor for 30 hours of live music and livelier swing under the palms or enjoy the show from the “ Starlight” Lounge.
* HistoryMiami, Miami Center of Architecture and Design and AIA Miami are a few of MDPL’s lecture partners, bringing to life the theme “The Art of Architecture” during lectures and forums in the Art Deco Museum.
* Bass Museum of Art, HistoryMiami and Fantasy Theatre Factory team up to educate kids so creatively they won’t know it’s happening. Speaking of happening, look for live performance, arts & crafts, music and tours.
* North Shore Historic District Neighborhood Association, showcases MiMo architecture and ongoing preservation efforts with tours, talks, education and displays. Flamingo Park Neighborhood Association will showcase a public art happening in historic Flamingo Park.
* Viernes Culturales uses live Cuban Afro music Friday night to draw attention to Little Havana’s historic buildings.
* A highlight of the weekend will be the Barbara Baer Capitman memorial dedication on Saturday afternoon. Join local dignitaries to honor the founder of the Miami Design Preservation League and the mother of the Art Deco District!

And there’s so much more: ‘The Art of Architecture “ photo exhibit, pet parade, a retro fashion show, street vendors, specialty tours, live music,history and surprises at every turn. The festival, virtually a non-stop weekend of events for all ages, is free and open to the public.

Parallel LLC, a newly launched consultancy that marries architecture and curatorial practices for its clients, founded by John Keenen, Terence Riley, and Joachim Pissarro, announces its inaugural project to debut during Art Basel in Miami Beach at the new Surf Club, designed by Richard Meier. Curated by Joachim Pissarro in consultation with Riley and Keenen, LAX – MIA: Light + Space will focus on fifteen works by seven Los Angeles Light and Space artists being shown together for the first time in Miami at the Surfside, Florida location of Meier’s architecturally iconic The Surf Club pavilion, north of Miami Beach.

LAX – MIA: Light + Space is commissioned by The Surf Club in conjunction with Fort Partners. It includes works by artists Peter Alexander, Larry Bell, Mary Corse, Laddie John Dill, John McCracken, Helen Pashgian, and De Wain Valentine*. It will be on view from Tuesday, December 1 through Saturday, December 12, beginning with a Wednesday, December 2, 9:30–11 AM Daylight Viewing reception. Larry Bell and Laddie John Dill, eminent LAX – MIA: Light + Space exhibiting artists, will be in attendance for the opening. The exhibition will subsequently be open to the public from 11 AM–5 PM daily. All artworks within the exhibition will be available for acquisition.

Light + Space
Largely gathered around the fledgling, yet intense, art scene located in and around Venice, California, during the 1970s, artists of the Light and Space movement were influenced by the distinctive atmospheric qualities of the landscape of Southern California’s Westside beachfront communities. LAX – MIA: Light + Space reimagines and re-contextualizes notions that fostered the artistic practices of these artists, giving their works a parallel and fresh life on Florida’s eastern coastal edge.

In a group statement, Parallel’s principal partners relate: “To see this unlikely alliance on the dunes of Collins Avenue in the Richard Meier pavilion which is surrounded by the ocean and the sky, is an occasion to enjoy one of the highest moments of radically new creativity in America in the past half-century, architecturally and artistically.”

Parallel co-principal and LAX – MIA: Light + Space exhibition curator Joachim Pissarro adds that the group’s interest in launching the partnership through this endeavor has a great significance to each member of their team, stating: “We could scarcely have imagined a better more evocative, richer and more lyrical dialogue between art and architecture than that between the group of artists in Los Angeles known as Light and Space and the supremely light and luminous architectural shell produced here by Richard Meier. Indeed the qualities of luminosity offer here a remarkable common denominator that articulates the poetical qualities between the architect in charge of this project and the artists, who seem to be serendipitously responding to the call for light articulated by Richard Meier so powerfully.”

Shirin Neshat is an Iranian-born artist and filmmaker living in New York. Neshat’s early photographic works include the Women of Allah series (1993–1997), which explored the question of gender in relation to Islamic fundamentalism and militancy. Her subsequent video works departed from overtly political content or critique in favor of more poetic imagery and narratives. In 2009, Neshat directed her first feature-length film, Women Without Men, which received the Silver Lion Award for Best Director in the 66th Venice International Film Festival. Neshat’s recent photographic series include The Book of Kings (2012) and Our House Is on Fire (2013). Neshat has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions at galleries and museums internationally. A major exhibition of her work recently opened at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC. Shirin was included in the 48th Venice Biennale of Art (1999), Whitney Biennial (2000), Documenta XI (2002) and Prospect.1 New Orleans (2009). She was awarded the Grand Prix of the Gwangju Biennial (2000), the Golden Lion Award, the First International Prize at the 48th Venice Biennial (1999), the Hiroshima Freedom Prize (2005), and the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize (2006). Neshat is currently working on her second feature-length film, based on the life and art of the legendary Egyptian singer Oum Kolthum.

Mickalene Thomas is a distinguished visual artist and filmmaker who has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally since 2003. She is best known for combining art-historical, political, and pop-cultural references to create striking figurative and nonfigurative paintings. Her work stems from a long study of art history and classical genres of portraiture, introducing complex notions of femininity and challenging common definitions of beauty and aesthetic representation. Thomas’s first solo museum exhibition was in 2012 at the Brooklyn Museum and Santa Monica Museum of Art. Thomas’s work is in the permanent collections of New York’s Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and Whitney Museum of American Art, as well as the Detroit Institute of Arts; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas; Seattle Art Museum; and Smithsonian American Art Museum, among many others. She was born in 1971 in New Jersey and lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Heidi Zuckerman is the Aspen Art Museum’s CEO and Director, overseeing all aspects of the AAM’s guiding vision and mission, administrative policies, curatorial and educational practices, strategic planning, and fundraising efforts. During her ten-year tenure with the AAM, she has secured a budget surplus every year—reinvesting instead of drawing from the endowment; fostered a 270+% increase in operational budget ($1.9M to $7M); and overseen the successful strategic planning and capital and endowment fundraising of $75M for the construction of the AAM’s Shigeru Ban–designed facility, which opened to the public in 2014. From 2004 to 2005, Zuckerman served as the Chair of the Art Curatorial Department at the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, and from 1999 to 2005, as the institution’s Phyllis Wattis MATRIX Curator. Prior to this, Zuckerman served as the Assistant Curator of 20th-Century Art at the Jewish Museum in New York. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in European History from the University of Pennsylvania; a Diploma from the Royal Society of Art, Christie’s, London; as well as a Master of Arts degree in Art History from CUNY Hunter College. She also serves as the Art Network Chair for the Young Presidents’ Organization globally.

Myths, Words and Fire Laura Kimpton Art Installation at SLS South Beach Hotel 12/1/15 – 12/31/15

Myths, Words and Fire Laura Kimpton Art Installation

SLS South Beach Hotel
1701 Collins Avenue
Miami Beach, FL 33139

Myths, Words and Fire, an art installation by Laura Kimpton, will be on view at the SLS South Beach Hotel. The installation will transform the entire ground floor of the hotel from the street to the pool area with sculpture, video and paintings. Sponsored by art collectors Marc Bell and Marc Leder, Myths, Words and Fire is Kimpton’s first Miami Beach project. In addition to the installation, Kimpton will launch her “She’s Got Wings” apparel line at a pop-store in the hotel during art fair week. Bell and Leder will host a VIP party at the SLS on Saturday evening, December 5th in honor of Kimpton.

Myths, Words and Fire will offer viewers the opportunity to observe and interact with Kimpton’s world of playful irreverence. Her use of images, words, objects and junk is a way of expressing her conceptual viewpoint that “nothing is sacred.”

In the spirit of radical self-expression, Kimpton’s installation will feature several of her monumental, Burning Man word sculptures including LOVE, #, M, and OK. Other elements in the SLS installation include:
A three-story painted wrap on the front façade of the building;
A painted art truck filled with televisions displaying Kimpton’s Burning Man EGO Installation Burn and other videos;
An 18-foot flaming, propane, Celtic Forest tree by the hotel entrance;
An EGO burning video in the hotel lobby near the elevators;
In the pool area, 10-15 easels with 2-D mixed media pieces including Self Portrait, White Bird;
On the beach, a moat with flaming steel books and an 8-foot centaur and an 8-foot mermaid;
In the bar area by the pool, 200 small pillows made from Kimpton’s oil paintings and throw blankets for the couches.

About Laura Kimpton
Laura Kimpton is a California-based, American contemporary artist whose work consists of painting, mixed-media installations, and sculpture. Her creativity stems from a desire to question traditional views on social interaction, therefore invoking through her art a reaction from her viewers that ultimately completes her projects. She is continually exploring new mediums in her search for revelatory communication. Her raw and original work uses photography, found objects, televisions, paint, and resin – fusing objects of history to convey a very personal message.

Kimpton’s foundation for this approach is a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The San Francisco Art Institute and a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from the University of San Francisco. Her works have been exhibited throughout the United States, including solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Her accolades include that of being a six-time Honorarium Grant Recipient at Burning Man, as well as the creator of monumental works such as “Celtic Forest”. Laura Kimpton is best known for her Monumental Word Series. Her Monumental Word Sculptures have been purchased as permanent installations in Santa Rosa, CA, Arlington, TX, Reno, NV, Hong Kong, China, and soon in Miami, FL.

Laura Kimpton currently works and resides in Marin County, CA. www.laurakimpton.com

New, By-Appointment-Only Art Fair Showcases Historical Masterpieces Alongside Contemporary Art and Design in a Specially Curated “Collector’s Residence” on Hibiscus Island

For its inaugural exhibition and sale, Miami Art Masters will take place December 1st through December 6th, 2015 at an exclusive, private residence on Hibiscus Island, located between South Beach and Downtown Miami. Designed by award-winning architects, Touzet Studio, the residence provides a spectacular backdrop to a curated selection of Old Master paintings and drawings, along with contemporary art and design objects. Lyrically weaving museum quality Old Master artworks in conjunction with the presence of contemporary works, Miami Art Masters will offer a unique viewing opportunity, for both the seasoned and emerging collector.

Running concurrent with Art Basel Miami Beach, which attracts thousands of visitors to South Beach annually, Miami Art Masters promises an experience unlike any other, not only through the diverse presentation of historically important works of art but also by participating in an active contemporary dialogue merging elements of the past along with those representing our current time. This invitation-only exhibition and sale will be held in an expansive 12,000 square foot private home unlike many familiar art fair venues. With the goal of bridging the disconnect between artistic periods and art constituencies, Miami Art Masters will create an atmosphere where old meets new and where the dissimilar styles not only beautifully coexist but also engage in a compelling dialogue, adding richness to one’s surroundings.

Spanning 500 years, ranging from the 14th Century to the 19th Century, fifty works of art by prominent historic artists such as Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, Lo Scarsellino, Filippo Tarchiani, and Jean-Baptiste Oudry will be part of a highly anticipated showcase. Further complementing this selection of Old Master works, the team of specialists will integrate an assemblage of contemporary art and design, by internationally acclaimed galleries and designers such as Ralph Pucci, Herve Van der Straeten, and Paul Mathieu in conjunction with artists such as Tracey Emin, Cecily Brown, and Candida Höfer, among others. Set in a contemporary interpretation of a classic Parisian Hôtel Particulier, this art happening offers visitors and locals alike a taste of luxury.

Miami Art Masters, 2015 is delighted to create and present an exciting and wonderfully unique exhibition and sale, contributing to Miami’s vibrant artistic community. It will expand upon, rather than detract, from what is already being offered throughout the city. We look forward to sharing this experience with you.
