Creating and fostering more gender equal organizations is essential, yet challenging. Persistent cultural dynamics and deeply held individual beliefs are some of the key root causes of the inequality we see today, but research shows that de-biasing people’s minds is time-consuming and expensive. Focusing on structural solutions through behavioral design is a cutting-edge and proven approach to promoting gender equality.
Gender equality expert Siri Uotilla will discuss the latest insights from behavioral research and show how they can be translated into practical tools that advance equality in the workplace through improved sourcing, hiring, promotion and retention of talent.

Siri Uotila is a research scholar at the Women and Public Policy Program at the Harvard John F. Kennedy School of Government. She is an expert in promoting gender equality within organizations and in translating academic research into practical interventions to advance women in society. Siri has worked with Fortune 500 companies, nonprofits, and local governments to improve gender equality through such projects as researching culture and leadership at senior levels; designing a paid parental leave policy; and spearheading legislative advocacy to increase women’s representation on corporate boards. She also has experience in management consulting.
Siri has an MBA from Harvard Business School, a Master in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School, and a B.A. in Chemistry and Physics from Harvard College.

AGENDA FOR THE EVENING:
6:30 PM: Refreshments and socializing at CIC Miami.
7:00 PM: Introduction and presentation from Siri.
7:40 PM: Q&A with the audience.
7:50 PM: More refreshments and socializing at CIC Miami.

Karl “Dice Raw” Jenkins is a five time Grammy nominated hip hop artist, composer, and long time member and producer of the critically acclaimed music group The Legendary Roots Crew.

“I am looking forward to returning to Miami. While there are a number of occasions to explore, experience and train in other art forms, there are not a lot of occasions for young people to explore, experience and train in the art and versatility of hip hop. Artists Within Reach and PATH to Hip Hop provide that. The opportunity to stand in front of all these young people and share my experience is great but for me I feel like I get a lot more from witnessing up close just how talented our young people truly are.”

Bubbles, Michael Jackson’s Chimp, Really Does Paint!

Miami, June 8, 2017: After great success at Art Basel 2012, the paintings by Michael Jackson’s chimpanzee, Bubbles, and many others will be on display for 10 days at Frames USA & Art Gallery in Miami. The opening reception will be on July 21, 2017 from 6pm-10pm where the public can view and purchase a very unique piece of original ape art.

“Purchasing a piece of original art by apes is a collectible. It creates conversation, it is a form of expression, and it is rare”, Adam Brand says, owner of Frames USA. “Not to mention that the proceeds from the sales of the art will go to an amazing cause”

Over the years, zoos and sanctuaries have dabbled into selling artwork at their gift shops by resident animals to raise money. However, the purpose of this art show, Apes that Paint, extends beyond that. It seeks to establish the fact that apes are artists without judgment and second that these ape artists are contributing to the fundraising efforts for The Center for Great Apes, located in Wauchula, Florida.

Aside from artworks from our star artist Bubbles, the exhibition will host other wonderful original pieces from celebrity apes. Among them, the art of chimpanzees from Planet of the Apes, and orangutans from the movie Going Apes, and NBC’s soap opera Passions. The crowd will enjoy complimentary food and wine sponsored by Carolina Ale House and a limited-edition gift with their RSVP to the event. For free admission and gift, RSVP at http://www.framesusamiami.com/frames-usa-events-1.html by July 18.

Come experience this unique art show and take an exciting piece home that will marvel friends and family, and learn about a sanctuary that helps protect chimpanzee and orangutans.

Accompanying that amazing piece we are also performing Mendelssohn’s popular Hebrides Overture and will have our featured pianist Jeffrey Biegel leading a performance of P.D.Q. Bach’s Concerto for Simply Grand Piano and Orchestra. This show will be spectacular!!

Kirkpatrick senior fellow in national security studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, Max Boot is the author of three previous, widely acclaimed books: The Savage Wars of Peace: Small Wars and the Rise of American Power (2002), War Made New: Technology, Warfare, and the Course of History, 1500 to Today (2006), and, most recently, the New York Times best-seller Invisible Armies: The Epic History of Guerrilla Warfare from Ancient Times to the Present (2013). FIBER OPTICS – Not what it seems. Five artists explore the world of fibers…natural and not. Colorful yarn, thread, plant fibers, sisal, raffia, luxurious lace, and felted wool are chosen because of how they look and feel.Seductive, soft to the touch and to the eye the artists … play with threads crossing threads, thick and thin, unusual inclusions Traditional processes, such as embroidery, quilting, knitting and weaving are revisited. The optical mixing of colors and textures give the illusion of a third dimension where the integration of light and transparency are an integral part of the process. The endless variations chosen by the artists are absolutely fantastic. For additional information please contact 786.390.5447.

Students of the Guitars Over Guns program, in response to the tragic loss of Jakyri Fleurimar (age 15), are releasing a remake music video of Wiz Khalifa’s hit ‘See You Again’, March 2nd, 2017 at Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM).

Replacing verses of the original song with their own lyrics, GOGO students such as Xavier Gustave, cousin of Fleurimar, had the opportunity to express themselves in honor of Fleurimar’s memory and the many others lost to senseless gun violence. The song and video remake, which involved more than 80 Miami-Dade County Public School students, is a community call-to-action; a platform for those who can still speak up, want to be heard and want to make a difference.

This special screening, hosted by Local 10 Anchor Neki Mohan, will be the first public showing of this project, promising to engage the community in conversation surrounding solution-based actions. As part of the evening’s program, messages of encouragement will be delivered by Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho (via video), WSVN 7 Reporter Ann Keil and Commander Francisco Fernandez of the City of Miami Police Department.

Students spent months writing, rehearsing and editing this project, which was recorded at Noisematch Recording Studio in Wynwood, and filmed at North Miami Middle School with a special appearance by members of the North Miami Police Department.

Come out and show your support!

Opening for the Quartet will be jazz vocalist, composer and Miami native, Carmen Lundy. Hailed by The Evening Standard as “a genuine jazz singer”. Jazz singer, composer and arranger Carmen Lundy hails from Miami, Florida and received her B.M. degree from the University of Miami. Welcome to the 2017 Miami Kidney Walk

The positive energy of thousands of people at the Kidney Walk is invigorating.

It’s infectious.

It’s exhilarating.

That’s because the Kidney Walk is not about kidney disease. It’s about people with kidney disease coming together, united in one cause: to celebrate life and each other.

Kidney Walk is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness of kidney disease and raise funds to support lifesaving programs for patients, their families, and those at risk.

Because funding builds the future, it helps build a world where kidney disease is caught “early” and treated before it causes significant damage. It builds a world where people don’t have to get a dialysis treatment to stay alive. It builds a world with no wait list for people seeking a kidney.

Be a part of a community of 85,000 individuals at more than 100 Kidney Walks who share a determination to end kidney disease.

C’mon! Join us.

The exhibition includes photographs of Ibero-American and world history and features images of historic importance, such as the meeting between Francisco Franco and Adolf Hitler at the start of World War II, Princess Diana, Martin Luther King, as well as photos of Celia Cruz, Cantinflas and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Brillhart Architecture is borne out of a love for and facility with “making” things. In the natural course of development, tectonics, materiality and the logic of construction have become a primary focus of interest. Relying on a back-to-basics approach, we often study old models for future buildings, marrying archetypes and prototypes with new materials, fabrication and construction assemblies – all the while placing heavy emphasis on process as a means of furthering creativity and invention. The goal is to create a contemporary and dynamic building vocabulary that resuscitates the Ancient, celebrates the Modern, and foresees an architecture without big style.

Though the firm works on a diverse range of projects – including commercial and residential architecture as well as exhibitions, interiors, furniture, and other speculative research projects – a pragmatic building vocabulary, emphasis on tectonic potential, and ideas of craftsmanship are the common threads that link each project together.

The office also embraces a very hands-on, “knowledge-how” ethos that extends beyond design. Engaged in low-budget competitions, installations, and personal endeavors (such as our house) early on, we grew our firm by conceiving, designing, fabricating, assembling and constructing many things ourselves. In simply having to figure things out, we have become highly resourceful: regularly collaborating with outside disciplines; learning to maximize structural and material efficiencies; and seeking creative solutions to details that may be outside the industry defaults.

As a result, the firm has won numerous awards for design innovation, including AIA awards in 2008 and 2010, and competition winnings. Work has been featured in the New York Times, Wallpaper, Metropolis, Design Bureau, and the Miami Herald. Custom furniture pieces have also been included in the annual design show, Inventory, held during Design Miami and Art Basel.

The firm was founded by Jacob Brillhart in 2005, after he completed his Masters in Architecture from Columbia University. Jacob complements his practice by teaching design, freehand drawing, and architectural theory as an Assistant Professor at the University of Miami School of Architecture. A Gabriel Prize finalist in 2006 and 2007 and a finalist for the 2010 Rome Prize in Architecture, Brillhart has also served as the Favrot Visiting Assistant Professor at Tulane University.

Two Miami icons team up to take you on a culinary world-tour on New Year’s Eve.

Pitbull embodies the Miami vibe: hip, cool and the ultimate entertainer. There is no one better to host a New Year’s Eve party than Mr. Worldwide himself. And when he thought to turn this party into a culinary affair, he only needed to look at the top of Miami’s Who’s Who. At the top of that list is none other than James Beard Award-winning chef, Michelle Bernstein.

The party will take place smack in the middle of all the celebration at Bayfront Park in downtown Miami. But this isn’t a party for the masses. This private event is a limited ticket event. So while 150,000 people party outside, patrons will be enjoying the VIP treatment within Worldwide NYE. The ticket includes everything: food, wine, spirits and a champagne toast at midnight.

There will be 15 to 20 food stations. Each station will have a signature dish created by Chef Bernstein. The spirit of this event is truly a “worldwide” experience. Each dish will focus on a different region of the world. In addition to the culinary delights, there are several signature cocktails to enjoy plus perfectly paired wine and craft beer. These signature cocktails are masterfully created by award-winning mixologist Julio Cabrera. Julio earned the title of Bartender of the Year and also named “America’s Most Imaginative Bartender” by GQ Magazine where he also graced the cover. Enjoy all the creations while taking in the Fox broadcast “Pitbull’s New Year’s Revolution” live from the private party.

Please note this is a 21+ event. Questions: Email us or check the website for more details.

Building CommUnity Party will Celebrate Growth of Supportive Space for Local Nonprofits!

Community residents along with local leaders across greater Miami are invited to come together for a celebratory evening at the Center for Social Change. The party is taking place on the brand new 5th floor, which is part of our Center’s expansion that has more than doubled the original co-working and event space capacity for South Florida nonprofits and social entrepreneurs. While Building CommUnity is technically free to attend, we are also fundraising for the development of a 1,500 sq. ft. outdoor patio with gorgeous, expansive views of surrounding neighborhoods. This 5th floor patio will provide a new venue for various community events, and if funds are raised in time, the goal is to open it Spring 2017. There’s a suggested “CommUnity Builder” donation of $25.00, and we’ll be engraving donor names on the patio’s railing when it’s completed.

About the Center for Social Change – Founded in Summer 2014, we house one of South Florida’s first coworking spaces and community environment for mission-driven leaders and organizations including nonprofits and social entrepreneurs. With affordable workspace options, meeting spaces, and access to events and educational opportunities, we provide a community of support in which to work, connect, innovate, and learn.

MANO Fine Art proudly presents Deep As A River
on view through November 28, 2016.

Featuring work by: Donald McKnight, Robert McKnight, MANO. Ali Miranda, Adriano Nicot, and Purvis Young.

Soulful and provoking the exhibit “Deep As A River” presents a collection of strong and at times uneven, but always intriguing works that collectively are an exultation of the human spirit. Of a life properly lived knowing as poet Jim Harrison said “You touch things lightly or deeply; but you move along because life herself moves, and you can’t stop it; so you go with the “being-ness” of life…”.

“Deep As A River” revolves around the work of Purvis Young, perhaps one of the most important outsider artist of recent times. Young is best known for chronicling life in Miami’s inner city; his work remains as relevant today as it was when he started documenting the hustle and bustle of Overtown. The exhibit than extends to include a poignant collection of photography by Ali Miranda, “Let Sleeping Dogs Lie”; Adriano Nicot’s blue series which while dark is not without humor; masterful figurative drawings by Donald Mcknight; powerful examples of assemblage as sculpture by Robert McKnight. Fittingly the exhibit ends with stunning mix media works by MANO that speak to our time, “Hanging On” a nod to the United States history of immigration, and “Fools on the Hill” that may be viewed as veiled political commentary.

Special thanks to Gallery Moderne for collaborating with us to exhibit works by Purvis Young.

MANO Fine Art Project Space is the working studio of Miami-based artist MANO and an exhibition and project space for art related events. MANO Fine Art is one of the founding members of the Bird Road Art Walk that is held on the third Saturday of each month.

Spectrum Miami, a juried contemporary art show in the heart of the Arts and Entertainment District, will run from Wednesday, November 30 to Sunday, December 4 during Miami Art Week. As part of Redwood Media Group, Spectrum Miami is more than an art show—it’s a five-day fine art experience featuring top galleries and artists from across the U.S. and around the world, along with entertainment, curated projects, and evening events.

Every December, thousands of art collectors, gallery owners, dealers, curators, artists, and art lovers flock to Miami Art Week. Alongside the powerhouse shows of Art Basel, Art Miami, Scope, and Miami Project, Spectrum Miami showcases innovative new art in an elegant, gallery-style exhibition space.

“Last year, we moved to a new location in the Arts and Entertainment District, resulting in a 14 percent increase in attendance,” said Eric Smith, president of Redwood Media Group. “We are excited to see what this year will bring as Spectrum Miami has emerged as one of the best-attended cultural events in Miami.”

The theme for Spectrum Miami 2015 is [ELEVATE]: Heightening your senses at the hub of the art world. Spectrum Miami features specially curated programs that are informed by the theme, including site-specific Art Lab projects, Art Talks, a specially selected emerging LaunchPad Artist, and a selection of Spotlight Artists. These programs provide a dynamic experience for attendees, allowing them to view and interact with works by leading national and international artists and view exhibitions and events that showcase the thriving art landscape of Miami.

Spectrum Miami will also once again host ArtSpot International—a show within a show—curated by director Aldo Castillo, one of the most respected authorities on modern and contemporary art. ArtSpot will present carefully selected modern, contemporary, and cutting-edge galleries with a strong Latin-American slant that specialize in painting, photography, sculpture, mixed media, and ceramics.
