Miami, Florida 33135

Miami, Mar 5, 2018 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Koubek Center adds a twist to its Little Havana Social Club series, presenting La Banda Morisca at the CubaOcho Arts Center in the heart of Little Havana at 6pm on Sun., Mar 18.

While Koubek Center will continue to host its popular social dance series in its gardens, on this special occasion, it is stepping out-and off site-in efforts to expand its reach and collaborate with other cultural partners. The venue could not resist the opportunity to present this renowned flamenco fusion band-direct from Jerez de la Frontera, and its timely coincidence with Miami Film Festival 2018 and MDC Live Arts’ Ojala/Inshallah series.
The changing border that separated the Arab-Andalusian Kingdom of Granada from the Crown of Aragon and Castile during the 13th and 15th century was known as “La Banda Morisca”-a place where Christians and Muslims, as well as the first gypsies coming to the Iberian Peninsula, met and coexisted.
Drawing their name and mix of influences from this strip of no-man’s-land, La Banda Morisca is a septet from Andalucia who incorporate traditions from both sides of the Mediterranean- including Andalusian moaxajas and North African chaabi- with flamenco and Andalusian rock on a range of instruments that includes oud (lute), guitarra Morisca (Moorish guitar), tarota (oboe), banjo, bass, percussion, saxophones and drums.
Acclaimed for their intoxicating blend of traditional and modern sounds, La Banda Morisca evokes the cultural heritage of ancient Al-Andalus and its lasting impact across Andalusia, the Maghreb, and the Near East.

Make it a night of Film + Music as cultural partners team up: Start your evening at The Tower Theater with Miami Film Festival’s screening of Indestructible: The Soul of Salsa, which follows Spanish flamenco singer Diego El Cigala as he embarks on a journey through Cali, Havana, Punta Cana , San Juan, Miami and New York. Then, cross Calle Ocho to the La Banda Morisca concert-the official after-party of the film festival screening. Package tickets available.

The LHSC series continues the following month with the Betsayda Machado, “the Voice of Venezuela, ” offers up the spirit-shaking vocals and percussion of Afro-Venezuelan soul on Saturday, Apr. 21.

WHAT: Little Havana Social Club: La Banda Morisca!
WHEN: Sunday, Mar 18 at 6pm
WHERE: CubaOcho Arts Center | 1465 SW 8th St Miami 33135
TICKETS: $15 concert / $25 movie + concert Tickets at koubekcenter.org

“With Maqueque, Canadian Jane Bunnett brings together an all-female band of Cuban all-stars for a sublime synthesis of modern jazz with a Cuban soul.” – Raul da Gama, Latin Jazz Network

Thirty years! That’s how long soprano saxophonist-flutist Jane Bunnett has been involved with, immersed in, and dedicated herself to the music of Cuba.
The latest chapter in Jane’s excursion is Maqueque, Jane’s exciting, energetic, all-female, all-Cuban sextet. “Everything I’ve done has led up to this group, which is the perfect vehicle for now,” Jane says with pride. Brought together and led by Jane, all of the five players have grown into a tight ensemble and individually blossomed into confident composers. After winning a 2014 JUNO Award (the Canadian equivalent of a GRAMMY) for their eponymously named first recording, the 2017 sophomore release for Maqueque, “Oddara,” nominated for a 2018 GRAMMY® for Best Latin Jazz Album, expands upon the Afro-Cuban format established on the first effort, and further exhibits the superb collective talent that comprises this acclaimed, energetic group. Their invitations to two of the most prestigious jazz festivals in 2018, the Newport Jazz Festival and the Monterey Jazz Festival, also further validate Jane Bunnett as a prominent exponent of Afro-Cuban music optimized for global consumption.

Funding for South Florida JAZZ is provided in part by a grant from the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Division

Join us this Saturday for a very exciting concert of New Music as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of @FM (Frequency Modulation) with its inventor and music icon, Stanford Professor John Chowning. The concert features new work by University of Miami’s Frost Electroacoustic Music Ensemble with Greg Evans and Alec Druth; and Violist Diana Wade with Mezzo-soprano Jennifer Beattie performing seminal compositions from some of the greats of avant garde music.
John Chowning is the musician and researcher whose discovery led to the first electronic music synthesizers, which have since produced sounds that revolutionized all genres of music. His FM algorithm gives today’s electronic synthesizers and organs the ability to simulate wide ranging musical textures and sounds, including the human voice.
Los Angeles, California based Violist Diana Wade and Mezzo-soprano Jennifer Beattie will perform contemporary works by groundbreaking new music composers Beglarian, Norman, Saariaho, Sciarrino, Schankler, as well as Wade’s original compositions. Diana has been praised for playing with “both athletic and operatic ferocity with a physical force that shook her and a sonic one that practically shook the walls”.
This concert is presented in collaboration with Foundation for Emerging Technologies and Arts as part of their FETA FM FEST celebrating Stanford Professor John Chowning and the 50th anniversary of his groundbreaking invention Frequency Modulation synthesis.

A master trumpeter “uniquely poised to reconcile jazz and Arabic music without doing either harm” –the Wire

Iraqi- American musician Amir ElSaffar has created techniques to play on the trumpet the microtones and ornaments found in Arabic music but not typically heard on brass. As a composer, he uses this to create an innovative approach to harmony and melody, seen in his commissions for jazz ensembles, Chamber Orchestras, and Middle Eastern Ensembles alike.

In 2018, this annual series returns in collaboration with Miami Dade College’s MDC Live Arts. It invites audiences into a meditative space through instrumental, traditional and innovative sounds from the Middle East. With support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge and the Doris Duke Foundation, The Rhythm Foundation and MDC Live Arts create an opportunity to build a connection with cultures primarily in the public eye for conflict zones. Victoria Rogers, Vice President of Arts for Knight Foundation, said: “Few things can bring people together like the arts. Events like this series are a great prism for exploring our and other cultures, and for finding the threads that unite us all.”

In an immersive environment, the audience surrounds performers in an in-the-round stage setup. The evening also features culture-specific, traditional snacks and sweets to engage the audience in a multi-sensory experience.

Friday, February 23, from 8-9:15 PM: The Bobby Thomas Jr Quintet: Two-time Grammy Award nominee Robert “Bobby” Thomas Jr. has wowed audiences around the globe for more than three decades. Widely considered one of the most important percussionists in music history, his lightning-fast hands and percussive pyrotechnics prompted the great Joe Zawinul to bestow upon him the title of “Hand Drummer.”

After graduating from high school, Thomas studied at Miami-Dade Community College. During this time, he discovered jazz, and began to play with saxophonist Jet Nero at the Gold Dust lounge and other artists including Ira Sullivan, Billy Marcus, Zoot Sims, Thad Jones, Monty Alexander and Mel Lewis. In the late 70s, Thomas played at a benefit with Jaco Pastorius in Miami Springs. Soon afterward, Thomas auditioned with Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter’s jazz fusion group Weather Report at a live performance in New Haven, Connecticut.

Bobby played with Weather Report and its successor bands Weather Update, The Zawinul Syndicate, and Jaco Pastorius’ Word of Mouth Band. He has recorded and toured with the likes of Stan Getz, Ahmad Jamal, Monty Alexander, Sir Roland Hanna, Zoot Sims, Herbie Mann, Eddie Harris, Branford Marsalis, Ahmad Jamal, Junior Mance, Paul Desmond, Johnny James, Monty Alexander, Wes Montgomery, and Roberto Perera. World artists he has played with include sitar player Amitava Chatterjee, and African artist Vinx. Currently a core member of The Zawinul Legacy Band, Thomas has issued several solo CDs, on which he plays an eclectic mix of instruments including conga drums, wind instruments, guitar and the African bow harp. He also leads a new group, The Alien Brothers: 7th World, who are putting together a debut album soon to be released.

With: Abel Pabon (keys), Armando Gola (bass), Jonathan Joseph (drums), Jesse Jones Jr (sax)

Little Havana’s Favorite Free Family Series Returns with a Festive Bang!

Miami, Feb. 12, 2018 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Koubek Center reignites its beloved bilingual family series, Playtime: Días de las Familias with a grand celebration from noon – 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, presenting Carnaval de Barranquilla! This event is free and open to the public.

The Carnival of Barranquilla-declared a UNESCO Heritage Masterpiece-is said to be the second largest carnival celebration in the world. The Koubek Center, with the help of the acclaimed folkloric ensemble Puerta de Oro de Colombia and special guests Cumbiamba Curramberos en NY, brings its revelry and splendor to Little Havana.
The festivities will include music and dance performances and interactive workshops, story time, an exhibition of traditional carnival costumes, and craft-making of masks and “Congo Hats,” tall colorful headpieces that are an ode to the slaves who gathered in cabildos (slave associations that elected their own carnival queen) in the early carnivals. The performance will include the Cumbia, Fandango, Puya and Congo genres, and culminates in a grand finale Carnaval Parade!

The Playtime series provides parents an engaging (and free!) way for their children to learn and practice Spanish. The fun and interactive family days highlight the diverse arts, crafts, literary histories, and music and dance of the city’s many Hispanic cultures. Children will be invited to sing, dance, create and speak together en español. The Playtime series will continue with a Son Jarocho Day representing Veracruz, Mexico on Saturday, Mar. 31 and an Earth Day: Rumba Flora with educator and Grammy-nominated singer Rita Rosa on Saturday, Apr. 28.

Save the date! Feb 17 at 8: the South Motors Jazz Series at Pinecrest Gardens presents NEA Jazz Master Ellis Marsalis, with Jason Stewart (bass) and Herlin Riley (drums). “Marsalis is a one-of-the-kind gem, a living legend.” (John Soltes, hollywoodsoapbox.com). Tickets $30-35 at pinecrestgardens.org. Music courtesy of KCC Productions.

From his first professional performance with “The Groovy Boys” over fifty years ago, Ellis Marsalis has been a major influence in jazz. At that time, Marsalis was one of the few New Orleans musicians who did not specialize in Dixieland or rhythm and blues. He played with fellow modernists including Cannonball Adderley, Nat Adderley, and Al Hirt, becoming one of the most respected pianists in jazz. Though he has recorded almost twenty of his own albums, and was featured on many discs with such musicians as David “Fathead” Newman, Eddie Harris, Marcus Roberts, and Courtney Pine, he shunned the spotlight to focus on teaching.

As a leading educator at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, the University of New Orleans, and Xavier University of Louisiana, Ellis has influenced the careers of countless musicians, including Terence Blanchard, Harry Connick Jr., and Nicholas Payton; as well as his four musician sons: Wynton, Branford, Delfeayo and Jason. In May, 2007, Marsalis received an honorary doctorate from Tulane University for his contributions to jazz and musical education.

On December 7, 2008, Ellis Marsalis was inducted into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.

Through the generosity of South Motors and the National Endowment for the Arts we are proud to announce that four of the artists will participate in a special educational initiative we call South Motors Gen-Next Jam. Nestor Torres, Brian Lynch, Ellis Marsalis and Spyro Gyra will mentor gifted students from the New World School of the Arts High School under the direction of Jim Gasior. Check the calendar for locations and times of these special free workshops.

Back by popular demand, Canada’s multiple award winning string slingers SULTANS OF STRING bring their genre hopping musical passport to Delray audiences.

For the past 10 years, 3x JUNO Award nominees and triple Canadian Folk Music Award winners Sultans of String have thrilled audiences with their global sonic tapestry of Gypsy-jazz, Spanish Flamenco, Celtic, Arabic folk, and Cuban rhythms, celebrating musical fusion and human creativity with warmth and virtuosity.

They’ve been celebrating this milestone decade of music-making with a digital and vinyl release, aptly titled ’10’ (featuring re-mastered cuts from their 6-CD catalogue).

Folk Radio UK recently described their music as “an enthralling, adventurous celebration of the power music has to transcend geographical and cultural boundaries, and Sultans of String wield that power with grace, eloquence and spirit.” Indeed ’10’, is more than a global sonic tapestry. It is a musical promise that embraces differences while finding common ground across culture, land, and time. While the album treks across all kinds of musical terrain, the fertile soil beneath each track is fed by hope unhindered and freedom found.

At the core of the band’s sound is Queen’s Diamond Jubilee recipient Chris McKhool’s fiery fiddle, melded seamlessly with founding guitarist Kevin Laliberté’s (Jesse Cook) rumba rhythm. Together their musical synergy create Sultans of String’s signature sound – the intimate and playful relationship between violin and guitar. Added to this rich foundation for the show is in-the-pocket bass master Drew Birston (Chantal Kreviazuk).

A Golden Age Throw-Back at the Koubek Mansion & Gardens

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Koubek Center kicks off it’s season with a throwback, hosting a 1940s-style ballroom social dance, Danzon Cubano! featuring Federico Britos yu su conjunto with the Emmy-award winning Miami Dade College Orchestra in a tribute to legends Barbarito Diez, Beny More, and Cachao on Sat., February 17 in the Koubek Center gardens.

Danzón is the official musical genre of Cuba and a slow, elegant partner dance with concise footwork and elegant pauses allowing couples to stand listening to virtuoso instrumental passages. Also revered in Mexico and Puerto Rico, the danzon’s characteristic look has become iconic: the closeness of partners, the swaying hips, and the minimal use of floor space, limited to a single floor tile (ladrillo). As exalted in The Gaurdian, “The elegant three-step can be traced back to Matanzas on Cuba’s northern shore, in 1870. The father of danzón, Miguel Failde, mixed European and African rhythms to which couples moved gracefully and precisely, gently flirting with each other, storytelling with their bodies. The women, holding a fan or flowers, are dipped and twirled, but with only fleeting touches and eye contact.”

Right in time for Valentine’s Day weekend, Koubek Center channels these sweeter times with a romantic evening of slow dancing, beautiful attire, old-school manners and glorious music paying homage to the genre’s legends. To help attendees warm up and loosen up, Koubek Center will offer a complimentary pre-concert dance lesson and will be blending specialty cocktails for purchase.

The LHSC series continues the following month with the sounds of Pacific Colombia in a Chirimia street-style party featuring Rancho Aparte on Saturday, Mar. 24; and in the spring with Betsayda Machado, “the Voice of Venezuela, ” offers up the spirit-shaking vocals and percussion of Afro-Venezuelan soul on Saturday, Apr. 21.

In Out of the Shadows III, Jumana Emil Abboud asks “What do places speak of?” This audio-visual performance includes Palestinian folk-tales and traditional oral histories. These stories that inspire the artist have always emphasized the importance of relationships with the landscape and with sources of water. Evoking her Palestinian roots and the places to which she is deeply connected—Jerusalem, Jericho, the Dead Sea, and the Galilee—the artist uses music, poems, and drawings to weave together past and present, contemporary reality and the unseen world with its jinns and ghoulehs. For this world premiere, Abboud collaborates with Issa Freij, and the artists reflect on their experiences during a four-year film project as they searched for the haunted sites of which the tales tell. Their interactive storytelling explores folk customs, sacred objects, and enchanted locations to underscore themes of memory, loss, and resilience.

Greg Stuart is a percussionist whose work draws upon a mixture of music from the experimental tradition, Wandelweiser, improvisation, and electronics. His performances have been described as “a ghostly, gorgeous lesson in how close, concentrated listening can alter and enhance perception” (The New York Times). Since 2006, he has collaborated extensively with the composer Michael Pisaro, producing a large body of music comprised of pieces that focus on the magnification of small sounds through recording and layering, often in combination with field recordings and/or electronic sound. His role as an interpreter of Pisaro’s compositions has been called “a David Tudor to Pisaro’s Cage” (The Boston Globe). Stuart’s most recent collaboration with the composer, Continuum Unbound, a three-disc box set on Gravity Wave, grew out of the pair’s field recording work in Congaree National Park and was selected by The Wire as one of the best albums of 2014.

This conversation draws upon themes covered by the 1988 publication, Women of Academe: Outsiders in the Sacred Grove, and will highlight challenges faced by women in Higher Education including the gender pay gap, work-life balance, and tenure.

Women of Academe caught the attention of college professors everywhere for saying “out loud” what women professors have known for years: women in college and university positions are treated as the “lesser class” than their male counterparts. They are, on average, paid less than their male counterparts, fill fewer of the tenured-or tenure-track positions than men, and do more service work in the academy than their male counterparts.

Join New World Symphony Artistic Director and composer Michael Tilson Thomas (MTT) as he leads an evening exclusively dedicated to new artistic creations. This event celebrating Miami and creativity in the arts is the cornerstone of NWS’s commitment to multi-genre innovation. The program includes the world premieres of a newly-revised Miami in Movements, two musical compositions and a short literary work by MTT himself and a micro-play by New York playwright Christopher Wall.

What does Miami sound and look like? The program includes the world premiere of the newly-revised Miami in Movements, a vibrant multisensory reflection on, and a love song to, contemporary Miami created by composer Ted Hearne and filmmaker Jonathan David Kane. Miami in Movements is the culminating work resulting from Project 305, which invited residents to share their stories and experiences of life in Miami in sound and video.

Glimpse of the Big Picture features three world premieres by MTT that include a short work for solo piano, a reading inspired by his recollection of a dream and a work for large ensemble, which MTT will himself conduct.

The Inherent Sadness of Low-Lying Areas explores how past experiences such as trauma can impact interpersonal relationships. The play weaves selected Fellows into the performance both musically and theatrically. This play will come to life through actors Joel Leffert and June Ballinger and through five Fellows, who will perform excerpts of musical works spanning three centuries.

Don’t miss your chance to be part of history in this visionary program.

The commissioned works on this program are supported in part by a donation from Mr. Douglas S. Cramer and Mr. Hubert S. Bush.

Miami in Movements was commissioned by the New World Symphony with support from Knight Foundation.

Ticketholders can join NWS Fellows for a free Pre-Concert Chat in the New World Center’s Ensemble Room 1! These half-hour chats begin one hour prior to the performance.

Saturday February 10 at 8 PM: Miami’s Suenalo has been crowned by the Miami New Times in the Best of Miami Awards: Best Latin Rock Band in 2005 and Best Latin Band in 2011. In 2014, New Times Readers’ Choice Awards named them Best Band and one of Miami’s Best Latin Rock Bands of All Times.

Suenalo mixes Afro sounds and funk with a dose hip-hop, reggae, rock, and jazz. With four albums under their belt, Suenalo has shared stages with the likes of Pitbull, Ozomatli, Chaka Khan, Soulive, Spyro Gyra, and Inner Circle, just to name a few.

From their 2003 debut “Collages” to 2006’s self-titled studio effort, 2009’s “Live at Transit,” and 2014 “Keep It Groovin,” Suenalo delivers high energy shows consistently to local and national festivals such as Calle Ocho, Grassroots, Orange Blossom Jamboree, Tropical Heatwave, Gasparilla, Bear Creek, Hulaween, New Orleans Jazz Fest, and Leaf Festival.

“Afro-Latin Funk? Whatever you dub it, The Suenalo sound system is buzzing from the fashionable warehouse parties of Wynwood to the trippy lounge scene of South Beach” – Miami New Times

“The dance floor gets hopping when one of the club’s regular acts, Suénalo, plays its addictive fusion of Cuban son and rumba, Dominican hip-hop, Colombian cumbia & American funk.” – New York Times

“Jam bands can noodle, and wander, and lose their energy. Not Suenalo. Their energy is especially surprising given that they’re democratic – composing and arranging is a communal, improvisational effort among the ten members (not to mention whoever might drop in, like Prince, yes, THAT Little Red Corvette Prince, did at a Jazid show last year).” – The Boston Globe

As Billie Holiday sings: The same ole story, but it’s new to me… Acclaimed artist Carrie Mae Weems, deemed “one of the more interesting artists working in the gap between art and politics” by The New York Times, presents a new performance-based work, Past Tense. Through music, text, projection, and video, this new performance-lecture takes us on a deep dive into the enduring significance of the iconic Antigone and her profound relevance to our contemporary moment. Past Tense’s origins lie in Weems’ powerful work Grace Notes. Weems says, “While working on Grace Notes for months it occurred to me that I was telling the story of Antigone, wherein an innocent man dies by unjustified means and his sister fights for the right to bury him honorably. But the wider community refuses her; her right to justice, and to peace, is denied.” Through photography, video, installation, and performance works, Carrie Mae Weems has created a complex body of art that investigates family relationships, gender roles, racism, classism, and politics. Although Weems’ work addresses a wide array of issues, her overarching commitment is to help us better understand our present by examining our collective past. Weems, the recipient of numerous awards, grants, and fellowships, including the prestigious MacArthur “genius” grant, the W.E.B DuBois Medal, and Anderson Ranch’s National Artist Award, is represented in public and private collections around the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions at major national and international museums including the Whitney Museum, The Museum of Modern Art, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

Saturday February 3, 8 PM: Arts Garage presents the Kiki Sanchez Latin Jazz Ensemble. Among the new generation of young Afro-Peruvian Jazz musicians that are emerging on the national Jazz scene is pianist Kiki Sanchez. Born in Lima Peru, Sanchez began playing piano at age 11. Later he moved to Miami, Florida, where he continued studying piano as well as cultivating a deep love for American Jazz.

Sanchez’s musical interpretation is resounding, leaving the listener with admiration and much anticipation for greater things to come from a musician of such high caliber.

Sanchez has also produced an instructional DVD called “The Real Latin Piano and the introduction to Afro-Peruvian Rhythms”; in it you’ll find essential musical knowledge that accentuates the building blocks of Latin music, as well as offering a fresh introspective view on various Afro-Peruvian rhythms as applied to Jazz.

With all these great musical things happening in Kiki’s life, it is no doubt that greater things are still to come for this young inspiring Jazz musician. Kiki’s recent release, “Two Worlds” has been well-received, as have his three prior CD’s.

“Excellent, clean improvisation, beautiful compositions, a fresh new arrangement of “El Condor.” [Dreams is] perfect for music lovers, arrangers, composers, and contemporary radio stations.” – Moise Medacier, reviewing his first CD, Dreams

Within the composition’s framework, the project connects contemporary issues, such as the prison-industrial complex and the Black Lives Matter movement, with the history of revolutionary movements of color. Centered in the belief that there is a soundtrack to every revolution, The Transformations Suite intends to foster dialogue on social-justice issues throughout the world, show how art can promote social change, contribute to the powerful growing movement on behalf of black lives around the country, and empower all people –especially youth– to make their voices heard. Samora Abayomi Pinderhughes is a world-renowned pianist and composer who has performed at the White House, the Blue Note, MoMA, the Sundance Film Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, and Carnegie Hall, and has toured internationally with Branford Marsalis, Christian Scott, Jose James, Harvey Mason, Emily King, and other artists. “Tal Cohen is among the best of a very few young inspired pianists I’ve encountered in my travels… Tal’s playing is full of passion, focus and creativity”- Joe Lovano

Israeli-born and Australian-reared Tal Cohen’s unique piano style owes its roots to the Jewish folk songs and classical music he played in his formative years growing up in Israel.

Tal was chosen as one of 10 semi-finalists in the Wangaratta Jazz Festival’s 2013 piano competition, Australia’s most renowned and fierce jazz competition.

Grammy-winning saxophonist Terence Blanchard invited him to perform with his Quintet at the 2014 New Orleans Jazz Festival. Later that year, Cohen appeared at the 2014 Perth Jazz Festival alongside acclaimed New York saxophonist Greg Osby.

Cohen was named the Grand Prize Winner of the Barry Harris National Jazz Piano Competition, gaining an opportunity to perform his music at the Main Stage in the 2014 Detroit Jazz Festival accompanied by bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Nate Winn.

After a final performance at the Sydney Opera House, Cohen was named the winner of the exclusive Australian Freedman Fellowship Award.

Now based in the US, he has become a regular performer with iconic jazz figures such as Terence Blanchard, Greg Osby and Robert Hurst and continues to tour the world performing his unique brand of improvised music.

A two-time Latin Grammy nominee, guitarist Rolando Grooscors is a rare find on today’s jazz scene: a unique voice that strengthens and expands the jazz idiom with sensitivity, clarity, and uncompromising integrity. His love for Brazilian music motivated him to start different projects where Brazilian music was infused with Latin and Jazz influences. Here he began to develop a Jazz/Fusion style. Rolando’s warm, expressive tones and impeccable phrasing have been delighting audiences wherever he goes.

“Rolando’s guitar playing is on another level, yet on this higher plane, Rolando’s soulful, creative, twelve tone improvisatory style is always completely accessible and joyous. Rolando displays a wide variety of styles and concepts with his harmonic and melodic imagery capturing the essence of musical freedom, spirit and sensuality.” – Darryl Tookes

Their wide variety of musical influences, ranging from Gypsy Jazz, Hot Swing, Ska, to Polka, result in the band producing a smooth mixture of progressive Gypsy/Parisian/Swing/World Music.

“A perfect stylistic harmony and a fluent technique are the results of this complex energy named “French gypsy jazz”.” French Culture Miami

“sweet sounds and killer music ” worldredeye.com

“The French Horn Collective are the coolest hipsters in town but they’re not making a style statement. They are just naturally, enthusiastically, undeniably vintage in their tastes and panache. They’re so cool, in fact, that Johnnie Walker recently filmed them for a commercial. ‘We are artisan musicians, and that’s what we have to do,” said [leader Vincent] Raffard, “to play our best all the time.’ ” Sarah L.
