As Billie Holiday sings: The same ole story, but it’s new to me… Acclaimed artist Carrie Mae Weems, deemed “one of the more interesting artists working in the gap between art and politics” by The New York Times, presents a new performance-based work, Past Tense. Through music, text, projection, and video, this new performance-lecture takes us on a deep dive into the enduring significance of the iconic Antigone and her profound relevance to our contemporary moment. Past Tense’s origins lie in Weems’ powerful work Grace Notes. Weems says, “While working on Grace Notes for months it occurred to me that I was telling the story of Antigone, wherein an innocent man dies by unjustified means and his sister fights for the right to bury him honorably. But the wider community refuses her; her right to justice, and to peace, is denied.” Through photography, video, installation, and performance works, Carrie Mae Weems has created a complex body of art that investigates family relationships, gender roles, racism, classism, and politics. Although Weems’ work addresses a wide array of issues, her overarching commitment is to help us better understand our present by examining our collective past. Weems, the recipient of numerous awards, grants, and fellowships, including the prestigious MacArthur “genius” grant, the W.E.B DuBois Medal, and Anderson Ranch’s National Artist Award, is represented in public and private collections around the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions at major national and international museums including the Whitney Museum, The Museum of Modern Art, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

Saturday February 10 at 8 PM: Miami’s Suenalo has been crowned by the Miami New Times in the Best of Miami Awards: Best Latin Rock Band in 2005 and Best Latin Band in 2011. In 2014, New Times Readers’ Choice Awards named them Best Band and one of Miami’s Best Latin Rock Bands of All Times.

Suenalo mixes Afro sounds and funk with a dose hip-hop, reggae, rock, and jazz. With four albums under their belt, Suenalo has shared stages with the likes of Pitbull, Ozomatli, Chaka Khan, Soulive, Spyro Gyra, and Inner Circle, just to name a few.

From their 2003 debut “Collages” to 2006’s self-titled studio effort, 2009’s “Live at Transit,” and 2014 “Keep It Groovin,” Suenalo delivers high energy shows consistently to local and national festivals such as Calle Ocho, Grassroots, Orange Blossom Jamboree, Tropical Heatwave, Gasparilla, Bear Creek, Hulaween, New Orleans Jazz Fest, and Leaf Festival.

Ashley Pezzotti is a seasoned jazz performer currently based in Miami, Florida. At the young age of 22, Ashley has already performed with many Grammy award winning artists including Keith Urban, Latin singer Juanes, Jon Secada, Chick Corea, Delfeayo Marsalis, Vampire Weekend, and Arturo Sandoval.

Capturing the heart of audiences with her extensive repertoire and roots in traditional jazz and bebop, Ashley creates an atmosphere of excitement that will transport you to another place and time. Her style is reminiscent of the great Anita O’Day and June Christy, and she performs with a level of maturity that is far beyond her years.

She was named a YoungArts winner for Jazz Voice in 2013, and was named a YoungArts winner for Popular Voice in 2014.

Over the years, Ashley has been given the opportunity to study under incredible musicians including Grammy Award winner Plácido Domingo, Cyrille Aimée, Kenny Barron, Branford Marsalis, Cheryl Bentyne, Kevin Mahogany, and Julie Silvera.

Saturday February 3, 8 PM: Arts Garage presents the Kiki Sanchez Latin Jazz Ensemble. Among the new generation of young Afro-Peruvian Jazz musicians that are emerging on the national Jazz scene is pianist Kiki Sanchez. Born in Lima Peru, Sanchez began playing piano at age 11. Later he moved to Miami, Florida, where he continued studying piano as well as cultivating a deep love for American Jazz.

Sanchez’s musical interpretation is resounding, leaving the listener with admiration and much anticipation for greater things to come from a musician of such high caliber.

Sanchez has also produced an instructional DVD called “The Real Latin Piano and the introduction to Afro-Peruvian Rhythms”; in it you’ll find essential musical knowledge that accentuates the building blocks of Latin music, as well as offering a fresh introspective view on various Afro-Peruvian rhythms as applied to Jazz.

With all these great musical things happening in Kiki’s life, it is no doubt that greater things are still to come for this young inspiring Jazz musician. Kiki’s recent release, “Two Worlds” has been well-received, as have his three prior CD’s.

On January 26, the much anticipated Miami Design District Performance Series Presented By The Knight Foundation (formerly the Palm Court Performance Series) returns to the Palm Court in the Miami Design District with its’ weekly Friday night ensemble of live musical performances. The Transformations Suite paints a musical picture of the current state of social inequality and injustice in the United States and beyond. Samora Pinderhughes has spent the past five years writing, recording, and producing this work, which combines music, theater, and poetry to examine the radical history of resistance within communities of the African diaspora. Within the composition’s framework, the project connects contemporary issues, such as the prison-industrial complex and the Black Lives Matter movement, with the history of revolutionary movements of color. Centered in the belief that there is a soundtrack to every revolution, The Transformations Suite intends to foster dialogue on social-justice issues throughout the world, show how art can promote social change, contribute to the powerful growing movement on behalf of black lives around the country, and empower all people –especially youth– to make their voices heard. Samora Abayomi Pinderhughes is a world-renowned pianist and composer who has performed at the White House, the Blue Note, MoMA, the Sundance Film Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, and Carnegie Hall, and has toured internationally with Branford Marsalis, Christian Scott, Jose James, Harvey Mason, Emily King, and other artists. His projects include I’m Still Here: Letters on Trauma & Healing ,for the Institute for Arts and Civic Dialogue; The James Baldwin Essays: Examining the American Dream Narrative, commissioned by Harlem Stage; The Migration of Protest: Meditations on Jacob Lawrence, for the Museum of Modern Art; and Billy Strayhorn: The Music of the Sutherland Period, for the Kennedy Center and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. Pinderhughes is also a member of Blackout for Human Rights, and was musical director for their 2016 #MLKNow and #JusticeForFlint events. The Transformations Suite has been performed throughout South America and the U.S. at venues including the American Museum of Natural History, the Harlem Arts Festival, Juilliard, UC Irvine, NYU, Joe’s Pub, the Jazz Gallery, MoMA, and Columbia University.

The Emperor and the members of the court are amazed, and want to keep the Nightingale in a golden cage. But when the Emperor of Japan sends a golden, jewel encrusted, mechanical bird, the Emperor and the members of the court forget about the Nightingale, and she flies away. Eventually, the glittering mechanical bird breaks, and the Emperor falls ill again, but the kind Nightingale comes back to save the Emperor, who agrees that she can be free.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami is thrilled to welcome saxophonist and composer Troy Roberts as part of the monthly Jazz at MOCA series. Roberts travels around the globe performing and recording with some of the greatest jazz artists of all time including James Morrison, Aretha Franklin, Christian McBride, Sammy Figueroa, Dave Douglas, Orrin Evans and Kurt Elling.

A jazz giant, Roberts has received numerous awards including three consecutive DownBeat Jazz Soloist Awards. He received a Grammy nomination in 2011, and was the only Australian semi-finalist in the 2008 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition. Roberts is a member of both the Jeff “Tain” Watts Quartet and Jeff “Tain’ Watts” “Blue 5” as well as the newest member of Joey DeFrancesco’s quartet “The People.” He is also currently celebrating his seventh solo record “Tales & Tones.” The public is invited to enjoy the rhythms of Troy Roberts.

The opening reception of “Yarn Bombing,” a yarn-inspired exhibition created by the students enrolled in the MOCA Teen Program and Fantastic Fibers Miami’s Artist Books, will run in conjunction with January’s Jazz at MOCA. The exhibition will be located in the MOCA Pavilion, open for all to see, from January 26 – February 2, 2018.

The groundbreaking “How to Unlock a Portal” exhibition by Swedish artist Jacob Felländer will also be open by donation during Jazz at MOCA from 7-10 p.m. The exhibition will be on display through February 11, 2018.

Elsten Torres is a singer/songwriter/producer who came to New York from Havana as a child. He was lead singer and songwriter for the American Latin Rock band, “Fulano de Tal.” After the breakup of the band, Elsten has continued both his own career as a solo artist and has had success writing for other well-known performers such as Ricky Martin, Luis Fonsi, Obie Bermúdez, Alejandra Guzmán, Julio Iglesias, Aleks Syntek, Oscar de Leon, Marshall Crenshaw, John Rich, and many others. He has been nominated for two Grammy Awards, the second for his first solo independent album, “Individual.” He has won several BMI music awards for his songwriting and is on the board of governors for NARAS. Currently living in Miami, Elsten works with charity organizations such as “Hope” (Miami Beach Homeless) and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. He has recently released his second all English album, “Waiting for Clouds”.

“Tal Cohen is among the best of a very few young inspired pianists I’ve encountered in my travels… Tal’s playing is full of passion, focus and creativity”- Joe Lovano

Israeli-born and Australian-reared Tal Cohen’s unique piano style owes its roots to the Jewish folk songs and classical music he played in his formative years growing up in Israel.

Tal was chosen as one of 10 semi-finalists in the Wangaratta Jazz Festival’s 2013 piano competition, Australia’s most renowned and fierce jazz competition.

Grammy-winning saxophonist Terence Blanchard invited him to perform with his Quintet at the 2014 New Orleans Jazz Festival. Later that year, Cohen appeared at the 2014 Perth Jazz Festival alongside acclaimed New York saxophonist Greg Osby.

Cohen was named the Grand Prize Winner of the Barry Harris National Jazz Piano Competition, gaining an opportunity to perform his music at the Main Stage in the 2014 Detroit Jazz Festival accompanied by bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Nate Winn.

After a final performance at the Sydney Opera House, Cohen was named the winner of the exclusive Australian Freedman Fellowship Award.

Now based in the US, he has become a regular performer with iconic jazz figures such as Terence Blanchard, Greg Osby and Robert Hurst and continues to tour the world performing his unique brand of improvised music.

PLEASE NOTE:

There are two shows Friday and Saturday. Guests in first dinner seating have the table for only the first show. After the first show, the table will be turned over to new guests arriving for the last show. We welcome first show dinner guests to continue the night at the Bar and in standing room. Guests in the second dinner seating may keep their table for the duration of the evening.

LATE NIGHT

Our second half of programming for the evening begins at 1:30am. Enjoy pulsating tropical rhythms fused with a variety of electronic music by local to international DJs, coupled with live percussion.

Friday January 5, 6-9 PM (FREE): The City of Miami Beach presents “FIRST FRIDAY”, featuring Zarabanda Band at Normandy Fountain, Normandy Drive & Rue Vendome. Zarabanda Band emerged in the late ’90s. They were originally contracted as the house band for the Zarabanda restaurant owned by renowned Cuban singer Willy Chirino. Within a few months Chirino was so impressed with how tight the band sounded that he asked them to be his official backing band. Zarabanda traveled with Chirino for a period of 5 years, performing both nationally and internationally. Saturday, January 6 in the Gleason Room Backstage at the Fillmore, 7 PM – Power Access, Inc. presents the South Beach Jazz Festival, tonight starring Ignacio Berroa, recognized as one of the greatest drummers of our times. As an author and a renowned educator Ignacio made his mark with the instructional video: Mastering the Art of Afro–Cuban Drumming as well as the books: Groovin’ in Clave and A New Way of Groovin’. He also conducts clinics and master classes around the world. He will present this project from 7 to 8 PM

From 8 to 9:30 PM he and his trio will perform “Straight Ahead from Havana,” his most recent CD release. Ignacio was honored to be included in the 2011 Mp3 compilation entitled “Jazz Drumming Legends,” which features some of the most renowned drummers in Jazz history. In New York City he was introduced to Dizzy Gillespie, who invited Ignacio to join his quartet. Subsequently, Ignacio took part of all the important bands Gillespie assembled during that decade such as: The Dizzy Gillespie 70th Anniversary Big Band, The Dizzy Gillespie All Stars Big Band and the Grammy Award winner, United Nation Orchestra. This relation lasted until Dizzy’s death. Gillespie best defined Ignacio as: “… the only Latin drummer in the world in the history of American music that intimately knows both worlds: his native Afro Cuban music as well as Jazz…” At once a veteran and a pioneer, he has been applauded through the years for his facility in combining folkloric rhythms with contemporary jazz and funk.

Besides Dizzy, Ignacio has recorded and played with musicians of the stature of: McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard, Clark Terry, Lou Donaldson, Jackie McLean, Jimmy Heath, to name a few. Ignacio has recorded three albums as a leader. “Codes” (nominated for a Grammy in 2007 and won a Danish Music Award in 2007 as best International Jazz Album.) “Heritage and Passion”, released in 2014. Featured tonight with Ignacio are Martin Bejerano on piano and Josh Allen on bass.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica on D-Day, Monty Alexander is a self-taught pianist with prodigious skills that were evident from age four. Nominated for a Grammy in 2011 for his CD “Harlem-Kingston Express LIVE” and for a 2014 Soul Train Award for “Harlem-Kingston Express 2: The River Rolls On,” his playing retains a strong Caribbean influence, but with a significant bebop flavor and bright swinging feeling. Influenced by Nat Cole, Oscar Peterson, Erroll Garner, and Wynton Kelly, Alexander is known for his surprise musical twists and the ability to build dramatic suspense. A 29-year-old Master’s graduate of the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, Kemuel Roig has already come out with two CDs (“Acustico 2”, with Ben-Hur Berroa, and “Let There Be Joy!” with his quintet) and a single “The X-Generation.” He has appeared on 21 CD’s as sideman to musicians like Arturo Sandoval, Ed Calle, Ben-Hur Berroa, Ricardo Rodriguez, Felipe Lamoglia, Hilario Bell, Pablo Diaz, and Yorgis Goiricelaya, and vocalists Olga Thomas, Leslie Cartaya, Aymee Nuviola, and Ana Cartañá. He has performed with At the age of 18 he was invited with the MDC Hard Bop Ensemble to be part of the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy. The next year, with the same group, Kemuel won a DownBeat Magazine Annual Student Competition under two categories, outstanding composition and piano solo. He has performed on stage with all these plus Giovanni Hidalgo, Chris Dingman, Issac Delgado, Amaury Gutierrez, Malena Burke, Marcos Vidal, Agustin Barreto, Rene Gonzales, Linda Briceno, and Marcos Yaroide, among others. Sunday December 24: Live on Lincoln presents the Chloe Dolandis Jazz Ensemble. A young voice with an old soul, dynamic entertainer Chloe Dolandis moves audiences with her powerful vocals and commanding stage presence. Appealing to a wide range of audiences, she is equally at home performing her original music and innovative covers at intimate venues and outdoor music festivals, as she is singing the American Songbook with large symphonic orchestras.

As a songwriter, Chloe is also quite versatile. Her debut album, Bring Back The Fever, is a uniquely stylistic blend of jazz, pop, and soul, while her EP, There’s More, offers a more intimate side of her voiceand songwriting abilities. Chloe’s country song, “One Man’s White Trash (Is Another Man’s Treasure),” was a finalist in the prestigious NSAI Song Contest Presented by CMT, and her pop/soul song, “Solid Woman” was a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition’s Performance Category.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami is thrilled to welcome back Miami Big Sound Orchestra as part of the monthly Jazz at MOCA series. Known as downtown Miami’s resident Latin Jazz big band since 2006, Miami Big Sound Orchestra combines 21st-century big band jazz with Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music, funk and soul. Their repertoire includes original compositions by Rafael “Cali” Valencia, legendary Miami bassist/composer; Chino Nunez, Grammy-award winning producer; and Jaui Schneider, former pianist/composer of Ray Barretto; along with classics from legends such as the great Mario Bauzá. 
 
The members of the Miami Big Sound Orchestra are all veteran Miami musicians who have performed and toured with top-name artists including Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan, Issac Delgado, Jon Secada, Chayanne, Rey Ruiz, Tito Nieves, and K.C. and the Sunshine Band, among others. 
 
The public is invited to enjoy the music, funk and soul of Miami Big Sound Orchestra as 2017 comes to a close. The groundbreaking “How to Unlock a Portal” exhibition by Swedish artist Jacob Felländer will also be open by donation during Jazz at MOCA from 7-10 p.m. The exhibition debuted on Dec. 7 and will be on display through Feb. 11.

The Miami Big Sound Orchestra is downtown Miami’s resident Latin Jazz big band since 2006, a project formed as a collaboration of musicians from Miami’s jazz and Latin music communities. The band combines 21st-century big band jazz with Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music, funk, and soul.

Hailing from all over the western hemisphere, the members of the MBSO are all veteran Miami musicians who have performed and toured with artists such as Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan, Issac Delgado, Jon Secada, Chayanne, Rey Ruiz, Tito Nieves, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, Chaka Khan, and the Funk Brothers, to name a few.

The band’s repertoire, inspired by the music of Issac Delgado, Ray Barretto, Machito, Willy Rosario, Paquito D’Rivera, Irakere, and Tito Puente, includes original compositions by Rafael “Cali” Valencia (legendary Miami bassist/composer), Chino Nunez (Grammy-Award winning producer), and Jaui Schneider (former pianist/composer for Ray Barretto), as well as classics from legends such as the great Mario Bauza.

Their leader, Peter Francis, is based at NWSA and Miami-Dade Wolfson campus.

Nikki was born and raised in Miami Beach, a cultural melting pot which she attributes her diverse sound to, not only making excellent jazz but also shining in the genres of electronic music, reggae, pop, rock and soul. The songstress has worked with acclaimed artists such as Gloria Estefan, Michael Bublé and KC and the Sunshine Band. She has also performed with the Florida Grand Opera in their production of the Opera “Aida” at the Arscht Center and records for Emilio Estefan at Crescent Moon Studio.

December 17 at 7 PM: Arts Garage presents The Mike Levine Jazz Sextet. Based in the Sunshine State, pianist Mike Levine has developed a reputation as a solid player, producer and composer. With a career that stretches back to the early 80’s,Levine made his record debut in 1981 as co-leader of The Ross-Levine Band, a project with Pat Metheny as a guest artist. The effort drew national attention and remained in the top ten of the AC-Jazz Chart for six weeks. Their subsequent effort also fared well and paved the band’s way as an opening act for such highly regarded performers as Michael Franks, Gato Barberi and Dionne Warwick.

Levine has enjoyed a variety of gigs and recordings from Mel Torme, The Jaco Pastorius Big Band, Ed Calle, Michael Bolton, David Sanborn, Steve Oliver, Les DeMerle, Roberto Perrera, Billy Ross, Raul DiBlasio and John Secada to touring in Mexico, Austria, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Canada. His festival appearances include the Montreal, Detroit, Syracuse, Aruba, Amelia Island and Berks jazz festivals. For 17 years Mike also played in the house band for “Sabado Gigante,” a top TV show seen around the world by millions, as well as “Don Francisco Presenta,” a popular talk show. As a composer, his compositions have landed in movies such as “Expendables” and “Admission” as well as TV shows both in the U.S. and internationally including Star Search, George Lopez, Four Weddings, Coronation Street, and Beverly Hills Chihuahua.

“From The Heart,” Mike’s debut CD, featured special guests Hiram Bullock and Ed Calle. This 2008 release landed Mike on the SmoothJazz.com Indie Chart for over forty weeks. His second CD, “Thinking Of You,” was released in 2012. Along with South Florida’s finest, Mike’s special guests were Will Lee, Ed Calle and Billy Ross. With good airplay, the tune “Walkin Tall” landed on Billboards top 30 Jazz Tune for 5 weeks. Mike’s latest CD “Star Gazing” released late May 2017 features Will Lee, Andy Snitzer, and Ed Calle along with South Florida’s finest and is already getting significant airplay nationally.

December 16, 8 PM: New York saxophonist Alex Weitz has an in-depth knowledge of composition that imbues his originals with robust, memorable melodies and structural integrity. The classical rigor of those melodies is just as evident in the way he improvises around them.

Since graduating from Miami’s Frost School of Music, Alex’s primary musical focus has been on performing, composing, and producing music with his ensemble, the Alex Weitz Group. March of 2013 saw their debut release “Chroma,” and after a long-awaited return his sophomore record, “Luma.” Weitz has appeared at such topflight venues as the Kennedy Center, the Monterey Jazz Festiva, the Arsht Center, the Tucson Jazz Festival, Gusman Hall, the Azamara Journey, the Telluride Jazz Festival, and numerous local, national, and internationsl venues with his own group and as a sideman.

In recognition of his excellence, Weitz received DownBeat’s Outstanding Undergraduate Soloist award of 2013, as well as recognition from ASCAP as an outstanding young jazz composer, and in 2014 his original “Song for Peace” was featured as the theme song for the Swedish documentary, “Bettan’s Taxi.” The upcoming year is already looking to be a breakout one for Weitz, and with the release of “Luma” it’s only a matter of time before discerning ears will awaken to his unmistakable voice.

Elastic Bond introduces a fresh monthly series of events “EB and Friends”, every second Thursday at The Yard. For this special December 14th “Hip Hop Edition”, the crew will be sharing the stage with beatboxing champ Komakozie and super MCs (and friends/collaborators) EPHNIKO and Orion. Freestylin’ jam vibes guarantee to make this a great evening.

Established in Miami in 2006 Elastic Bond infuses an uplifting sound self-described as psychedelic tropical soul. The band originally started out as a loose studio collaboration between Venezuelan producer-musician Andrés Ponce and Honduran singer-songwriter Sofy Encanto, and soon developed into a unique blend of Funk, Hip Hop, Soul and Latin written and performed in Spanish and English.

In 2017, the band released their latest album “Honey Bun” in collaboration with Grammy winner Adrian Quesada as co-producer. This new album presents an organic soul sound with a glaze of hip hop and it’s the band’s first vinyl release. The first single and title track “Honey Bun” debuted via Univision’s Uforia. The second single “Un Lugar” featuring rapper Ephniko was selected as Top Tune of the Day by LA’s KCRW station.

Dec 15 at 8 PM: Jean Caze presents Amédé at Arts Garage. Winner of the 2006 International Trumpet Guild Jazz Competition, and the 2004 National Trumpet Jazz Competition, Jean Caze has emerged as one of today’s most exciting voices in jazz. At the age of twenty-seven Jean has performed with the likes of Herbie Hancock, Najee, Arturo Sandoval, Roberta Flack, Al Jarreau, and George Duke to name a few. While in high school, Jean performed with the legendary rock group “Chicago” live on NBC. In 2007, the Haitian-born trumpeter won second place in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.

Jean has received abundant praise from critics, peers and jazz enthusiasts alike who have taken to Jean’s lyrical tone and tasteful ideas. He has been hailed a “True Improviser” and even compared to Miles Davis by fellow trumpet player Carl Saunders. Though his roots are solidly planted in jazz, Jean can flawlessly switch between genres.

A percentage of VIP ticket sales will benefit the hurricane relief efforts undertaken by Neighbors 4 Neighbors, a nationally acclaimed nonprofit organization based in Miami, founded by CBS television in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew in 1992. December 9 at 8 PM: The South Motors Jazz Series presents Brian Lynch’s Afro-Caribbean Jazz Ensemble’s Holiday Show, with Special Guest Nicole Yarling. A vital force and emergent legend within both the hardcore straight ahead and Latin Jazz communities, Grammy© Award Winner Brian Lynch is as comfortable negotiating the complexities of clave with Afro-Caribbean pioneer Eddie Palmieri as he is swinging through advanced harmony with bebop maestro Phil Woods. A honored graduate of two of the jazz world’s most distinguished academies, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and the Horace Silver Quintet, he has been a valued collaborator with jazz artists such as Benny Golson, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Charles McPherson; Latin music icons as diverse as Hector LaVoe and Lila Downs; and pop luminaries such as Prince. As a bandleader and recording artist he has released 19 critically acclaimed CDs featuring his distinctive composing and arranging, and toured the world with various ensembles reflecting the wide sweep of his music. He currently is Professor of Jazz Trumpet at the Frost School Of Music, University of Miami as well as conducting clinics, residencies and workshops at prestigious institutions of learning the world over. His talents have been recognized by top placing in the Downbeat Critics and Readers Polls (#3 Trumpet 2011 Critics Poll); highly rated reviews for his work in Downbeat, Jazziz and Jazz Times; 2005 and 2007 Grammy award nominations, and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Chamber Music America, and Meet The Composer.

Special Guest vocalist Nicole Yarling’s musical excursions have brought about stints with Dizzy Gillespie and three years on tour as a featured soloist with Jimmy Buffet. She also participated on Buffet’s platinum-selling CD, Fruit Cakes, and then went on to do eight worldwide tours with her own project, Little Nicky and the Slicks.

Dec 1, 6-9 PM: The City of Miami Beach presents First Friday, featuring singer/songwriter Leesa Richards. Leesa is a storyteller, a soulful voice offering a soundtrack to the narratives of life. Her sound taps into the deep roots of R&B, the poetry of jazz and folk and the energy of rock. Her debut solo album, Mother’s Child, is a rich blend of soulful ballads, rock and R&B, and showcases her gifts as a songwriter; it is a universal story of love and loss. She has performed with a slate of powerhouse artists including Faith Hill, The Bee Gees, Kelly Clarkson, Gloria Estefan, and Carole King, and recorded with Barbra Streisand and Lenny Kravitz, among other artists. On stage, she played the role of Mary Magdalene in the national tour of the Broadway musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, earning critical acclaim which led to featured performances throughout the US and Europe.

Dan Hosker may be gone, but in no way is he forgotten. The dynamic musician who sadly passed away in 2012 lives on thanks to the efforts of his sister Chris Hosker O’Brien, Frank “Rat Bastard” Falestra, Holy Terrors bandmate Rob Elba and the Dan Hosker Music Continuum (DHMC), an event that raises funds for a music scholarship each year. This year’s event will take place Sunday, December 3, 2017, from 6 p.m. to midnight at Las Rosas (2898 NW 7th Avenue, Miami, FL 33127). Cost to attend is $10 for 18 and over; $20 will include a copy of the CD and admission.

The event’s companion CD is called Distinguish the Sound and features previously unreleased tracks from South Florida favorites, past and present, including Charlie Pickett, Jacuzzi Boys, Nil Lara, For Squirrels, Arlan Feiles, Humbert, Curious Hair, Diane Ward, Gold Dust Lounge, The Goods, Viva Le Vox, Ian Hammond & The Ugly Truth, Jim & John Camacho, Jim Wurster, Shark Valley Sisters, The Brand, Plutonium Pie, Wurster, Shark Valley Sisters, The Brand, Plutonium Pie and many more. Many of these artists will be performing live that night, along with sets by DJ Skidmark.
All proceeds will go towards the continued funding of the DHMC scholarship and this year, the Xela Zaid / Alex Diaz Stroke Recovery Fund. Past DHMCs have helped Priya Ray from Kreamy Lectric Santa buy a handicap-accessible van, and helped purchase instruments for the Miami Girls Rock Camp. This year’s event will be hosted by Nicky Bowe, Mr. C and Dave Daniels, legendary founder and former owner of Churchill’s Pub.

Join us Wednesdays for live jazz under the stars featuring Miami local music luminaries living in our midst. These shows are each Wednesday from 8 pm – 11 pm for free at The Yard and are curated by Chad Bernstein of Guitars Over Guns.

On Wednesday, November 29th, pianist Tal Cohen pays us a very special visit at The Yard. Cohen’s unique piano style owes its roots to the Jewish folk songs and classical music he played in his formative years growing up in Israel. He later moved to Australia, where he received a music scholarship from Churchlands Senior High School. He continued his music studies at the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, where he completed a bachelor’s degree and masters in jazz performance. He began performing nationally, including Sydney’s 505 and Melbourne’s Bennett’s Lane and Uptown jazz clubs. In the same year, he also performed with New York saxophonist, George Garzone. In 2011, Tal performed at the Melbourne Jazz Festival in the “Jamie Oehlers Quartet”. That same year, Cohen released his first album as a leader “Yellow Sticker”. He’s currently studying at the University of Miami, where he’s had the opportunity to play with drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts, and West Coast-based trumpeter John Daversa. We can proudly call him a local.

In July 2011, Tal performed at the Melbourne Jazz Festival in the “Jamie Oehlers Quartet” which featured Australia’s Jamie Oehlers on saxophone as well as highly acclaimed New York drummer Ari Hoenig, and Sam Anning on bass. The group then went on to record the album “Smoke and Mirrors” after which the group toured around Australia in August 2012. Tal has also had the honor of playing with iconic modern jazz bassist, Bob Hurst in Melbourne and Perth shows in June 2012, alongside Jamie Oehlers and drummer, Jacob Evans.

November 25 at 8 PM: Felipe Lamoglia is a Grammy-winning saxophonist, composer and arranger. Born and educated in Cuba, he is a graduate of the prestigious Superior Institute of Art (ISA).

In 1999 Lamoglia relocated to the U.S. where he immediately began performing with the late Celia Cruz. In 2001 he began playing with Grammy winner Arturo Sandoval. Sandoval’s CD “Rumba Palace,” on which Felipe arranged and played, won a Grammy. In 2004 he joined Grammy winner Gonzalo Rubalcaba, recording on his Grammy-nominated album, Paseo (Blue Note). He also recorded on Ignacio Berroa’s Grammy-nominated album, “Codes.”

Felipe has shared the stage with musical giants such as Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, Wynton Marsalis, Eldar, Dafnis Prieto, Ignacio Berroa and many others, participating in Major Jazz Festivals in the U.S. and abroad including JVC, Playboy, Newport, Henieken Jazz, Red Sea and in venues such as Blue Note, Iridium, Jazz Standard, Yoshi’s, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola and many more.

Felipe’s latest project, “Iresounds”, is a mix of his Afro-Cuban roots, Latin Jazz and contemporary Coltrane-influenced Jazz.

Miami Book Fair kicks off this year on Sunday, November 12th, with a photo exhibition for HURRICANE, a new book by Miami photographer, Barry Fellman, with spectacular photos that transform devastation into art. The book includes essays by hurricane hero Bryan Norcross, and Vicki Goldberg, art critic of the NY Times.

HURRICANE will be featured when MDC president Eduardo Padrón opens the Miami Book Fair November 12, and is the only book with an exhibition at the Fair. Saturday November 4 at 8 PM: International jazz/blues singer/songwriter Polly Gibbons, who has been compared to Adele and Gregory Porter, is receiving brilliant reviews and praise for her talents by artists like Van Morrison and Joss Stone, continues her quest of the U.S. with her third mini tour this year. She is accompanied by Kevin Bales (piano), Chuck Bergeron (bass), John Yarling (drums), and featuring Paul Bollenback on guitar. Inspired by Billie Holiday, the budding singer experienced an initial flurry of excitement in discovering jazz and blues, listening to such artists as Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Nina Simone, Miles Davis, Donny Hathaway, Thelonious Monk, etc. She was also greatly influenced by artists like Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Rickie Lee Jones and Bob Dylan. Polly has cultivated her craft and eclecticism over the past decade, performing at all the leading UK jazz clubs, international festivals and as a regular at the legendary venue Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, where she has sung with the All-Stars, led by pianist and house musical director James Pearson.

“There’s always this element of surprise from people who haven’t seen her perform,” says Pearson, Polly’s longtime songwriting collaborator and arranger. “She astounds me, too. WHERE IS PACHANGA ISLAND?

A remote island that’s about a 10 minute boat ride off the shores of downtown Miami, where you can party hard all day long and even harder into the early, late, and evening yonder…

WHEN IS THE PACHANGA’S HALLOWEEN PARTY?

The journey starts on Sat. October 28 at 12 noon (Actual Main Halloween Party is from 7pm – 4am). Though, we will be partying on the Island until late Sun. October 29 ( Last boat rides to mainland at 5:45pm)… RAIN or SHINE!

WHAT IS INCLUDED WITH MY TICKET PURCHASE?

You purchase your tickets for the boat ride to the island and as a courtesy we will provide all the music, fun people, performers, entertainment, and anything else that is included with your respective ticket(s), during your stay on PACHANGA ISLAND (Yes, the island is bare with no amenities or furniture; however, we will have makeshift toilets on the island and also there is one on the boat/ferry)… You can attend just the main party on Saturday (7p – 4a), or you can come earlier during the Saturday (boat rides start at noon), and you can also stay for the afterparty until Sunday (6pm). If you are planning on staying overnight, you must bring with you everything you’d need for a comfortable stay… Especially, don’t forget:

— To bring a Tent and/or Pass-Out or Sleeping Gears

— Bug Spray for nightime and Suntan Lotion / Hat for daytime Human Skin Barbercueing

— Small Trash Bag (Pick up after yourself. It’s a LEAVE-NOTHING-BEHIND event); We will provide Large Trash Cans for your smaller bags)

WHERE TO PICK UP THE BOAT?

The boat pick up location will be around downtown Miami and the final address will be emailed to the people who purchase their tickets online a few days before the party.

BOAT SCHEDULE (Boat runs every 30 minutes to an hour):

Saturday Day (11am – 3pm) — Use this time slot if you are bringing camping gear to stay on the island

Saturday Night (7pm – 4am) — Main Event Hours; No camping gear allowed on boat during Sat. night hours; Last boat ride back to mainland is at 3:30am

Sunday Day (3pm – 6pm) — Last boat ride back to mainland will be at 5:45pm for those who stay overnight for the Afterparty.

On October 21st the New World Symphony will present Project 305, a WALLCAST concert unveiling the crowd-sourced symphony of Miami’s unique sights and sounds. The project was launched back in January in partnership with MIT Media Lab and The Knight Foundation.

Over 1,000 submissions from Miami locals were blended together to create the final work by Ted Hearne, Jonathan David Kane and Michael Tilson Thomas titled Miami in Movements representing our city’s astounding range of cultural influences. Before the concert, guests will have the opportunity to engage in activities including backstage tours of the world-renowned Frank Gehry-designed New World Center, a 360-degree virtual reality experience of Miami’s most beloved neighborhoods and numerous pre-performance concerts. The WALLCAST will also be streamed on Facebook Live, so that those unable to attend can still tune-in for the excitement. This unifying community event is free and open to all ages.

Timbalive was created in Miami in August 2008, by Leo Garcia (Director, Timbales), offering the best of Cuban Music with a mix of different rhythms from around the world. Based in Miami, and integrated by highly trained musicians from Music Schools in Cuba, they are one of the largest and most successful group of Timba in United States and the world. Timbalive began recording his first album in May 2009 with the musical production of Bayron Ramos, songs of their own inspiration and other composers.

The new album, “From Miami a la Habana” was first available in November 2009. Since the release of his album, Timbalive established itself in the limelight of international music, featuring in the top of the Top 10 charts around the world. The Band was awarded for Album Revelation of the Year 2009 in France, and the Best album of Timba in Peru. During 2009 and 2010 Timbalive toured 2 Times Europe, Mexico, Canada, South America and many States in the Us. Hits songs like “El Dinero”, “Ave Maria que Calor” and “Como Miami No Hay Na’ ” still sound in radios and Night Clubs worldwide. In 2010,the Band started recording their second album “La Timba Pa to el Mundo” was first available in June 2011.

Miami native singer-songwriter Robbie Elias is taking the stage at the A+E District’s Rooftop Unplugged Concert Series on October 19th. Elias began conquering the music industry by writing songs, touring, and singing background for mega-artists like Alejandro Sanz, Don Omar, and Marc Anthony. In 2012, he released his first English solo album titled “Magic City.” With influences ranging from his Cuban-born father, a guitarist and songwriter, to the likes of pop icons George Michael and Elton John, Elias’ soulful blend of pop, rock and R&B gained the respect of critics and fans alike who hailed him as “Miami King of Pop.” His participation on Alejandro Sanz’s album “La Musica No Se Toca” led him to win a Latin Grammy in 2013. Elias recently began working with the music departments on shows such as Telemundo’s “La Voz Kids” and Univision’s “Mira Quien Baila.” He has also established his place in the realm of YouTube sensations by becoming one half of pop duo Liza & Robbie.
