The Mike Cady Experience, with Joe Donato, Jaui Schneider, Don Wilner, and Leny Seinberg are set to debut at Arts Garage Friday, November 30, at 8 PM.

Cady dazzles his audience with his ability to go from the jazz stylings of Eddie Jefferson to lead singer in Teddy Harris Jr’s Bebop Society Jazz Orchestra. Just when you think you’ve heard it all, he pulls out songs from R&B greats. He makes each song his own. His venues have ranged from small clubs to concert halls to major jazz festivals. He has performed in cities like Detroit, Cleveland, Chicago, and Miami. He’s performed with noted musicians such as Marcus Belgraves, Harold McKinney, Rudy Robinson, Marion Haden, and more.

When Michael hits the stage, he exudes confidence. This was instilled in him by his mother, the late, great Susie Garrett, an actress/singer. His stage performances include “Great Legends and Great Music” a DeeDee McNeil production directed by Ron Milner. His most recent project was “A Tribute to Horace Silver” for which he received an overwhelming response from Metro Times.

It is a group of dreamers and friends who have come together to realize a musical vision amidst difficult times which make visionary projects like this one difficult to realize. Nonetheless, against the odds, Carlos Camilo has managed to bring together honorable musicians to glorify music through the complex language of jazz.

Carlos Camilo is a pianist, singer, composer and producer hailing from Cuba and currently based in Miami. Growing up in Cuba, his music is inspired by traditional Cuban flavor mixed with American music. From an early age, Carlos Camilo knew he wanted to pursue music seriously, and has since been influenced by artists such as Alejandro Sanz, Earth Wind and Fire, Brian Culbertson, Brian McKnight, Michael Jackson, Hans Zimmer and countless others. Today, he mainly creates smooth jazz and R&B. He’s released six albums and multiple singles and has played his music all over the globe with other artists, including Spanish Latin superstar, David Bisbal.

Ha*Ash, is a Mexican-American pop and country duo comprised of sisters Hanna Nicole Pérez Mosa and Ashley Grace Pérez Mosa, formed in 2002 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, U.S.

From a young age Hanna and Ashley Pérez Mosa developed an affection towards music, playing their debut show at a talent contest organised by their school in 1998. The performance proved a catalyst for the sisters’ success, who were subsequently invited to play the local Railroad Festival and Louisiana Music Cavalcade. By 2001 the sisters had signed with Sony Music and formed the group Ha*Ash, with the aim of combining Latin pop, country and rock.

Featuring Aureo Baqueiro on the production reigns, Ha*Ash’s self-titled, debut album appeared in 2003. Selling over 140,000 copies, the album found great success aided by the singles “Odio Amarte”, “Estes en donde Estes”, and “Te Quedaste”. The record propelled the sisters to U.S. and Latin American recognition and was later featured on the animated film “Magos y Gigantes”. Once again with Baqueiro on production duties, the duo’s sophomore studio album “Mundos Opuestos” followed in April 2006, rising to No. 4 on the Mexican Albums Chart. Spawning the singles “Amor A Medias”, “Me Entrego a Ti”, and “Tu Miranda En Mí”, it was their third Mexican single, “¿Qué Hago Yo?”, which became a No. 1, beating out Shakira’s “Hips Don’t Lie”.

Drawing influences from a spectrum of sources including Reba McEntire, Soraya, and Sin Bandera, the sisters’ third album saw the arrival of producer Michele Canova. Released in August 2008, “Habitación Doble” (Double Room), generated significant radio play in Mexico notably with the singles “No T Quiero Nada” and “Already Home”. In 2011 a fourth studio album was issued by Ha*Ash entitled “A Tiempo”, following which the pair embarked on a successful Latin American tour. Three years later, Ha*Ash returned to the studio to release “Primera Fila” in 2014 and now in 2018 they are in tour in USA with 100 Años Contigo, with concert in Miami on October 21 at the Fillmore Miami Beach

“She plays the hell out of the guitar” – Matt “Guitar” Murphy

After college, Rachelle became known in Miami for her unique style and was cast in an indie movie, taught guitar for National Guitar Workshop, and worked on developing guitar methodology.

MIAMI, FL (October, 2018) – What happens when you mix the mystical philosophy and music of India with the forward-leaning jazz of the legendary Alice Coltrane? That intoxicating, otherworldly yet deeply earthy music was nearly lost to history until David Byrne (of Talking Heads and more fame) and his Luaka Bop record label recently brought it back to the public with the release of a new album compilation. On Friday, October 12, South Florida audiences have the chance to hear that music live, from the Sai Anatam Singers, who originally performed Coltrane’s devotional compositions, including Alice’s musician daughter Michelle Coltrane, at the North Beach Bandshell, presented by The Rhythm Foundation.

Alice Coltrane was an acclaimed jazz musician, composer, and the wife of John Coltrane, the most venerated and influential saxophonist in the history of jazz. In 1967, John died, leaving Alice a widow with four small children. Bereft of her soul mate Alice turned to Indian spirituality, eventually opening the Shanti Anantam Ashram. Music was the foundation of Alice’s spiritual practice and during this time she released recordings inspired by jazz and the gospel music of the Detroit churches she grew up in, mixed with the Indian music of her religious practice.

This unique concert event, led by Surya Botofasina, an actor and musician who grew up in Coltrane’s ashram, continues The Rhythm Foundation’s eclectic 2018 fall season. “We are all so excited to not only pay tribute to the iconic Alice Coltrane with this event, but also to bring this powerful spiritual and musically moving concert to our North Beach Bandshell” says Par Neiburger, Artistic Director of The Rhythm Foundation.

Tickets for the Friday, October 12, 8:00 pm Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda: The Ashram Experience concert are $30 in advance at tinyurl.com/AliceColtraneTix, and $35 at the door. The show takes place at the North Beach Bandshell, 7275 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach (North Beach neighborhood), which is fully wheelchair accessible. Ample on-street and public lot metered parking is available. For more information visit RhythmFoundation.com or call (305) 672-5203. To request materials in accessible format, sign language interpreters, or any disability accommodation, please contact The Rhythm Foundation five days in advance to initiate your request. TTY users may also call 711 (Florida Relay Service).

The Rhythm Foundation, founded in 1988, is a non-profit cultural organization that is a foremost presenter of international music in the US. The Rhythm Foundation has presented concerts, festivals, and events featuring over 800 established and innovative artists from around the world. Since 1994, FIU’s Cuban Research Institute (CRI) has organized an annual concert series featuring music on Cuban themes by Cuban and other composers. The purpose of this public event is to celebrate, preserve, and promote the rich and diverse musical heritage of Cuba and its diaspora.

CRI will hold the 14th installment of its Classically Cuban concert series on December 2, 2018, at the Wertheim Performing Arts Center of the FIU School of Music on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus. Virtuoso pianists and Cuban brothers Orlay Alonso and Orlando Alonso present an immersive experience that places the audience at the center of the “Golden Era” of Cuban music and entertainment of the 1940s and 1950s.

From the sensuality and seductive melodies of the bolero, to the exotic and complex rhythms of the mambo and cha cha, Cuba’s musical heritage spans centuries and has influenced most popular music of our time. Presented by the Alonso Brothers, this interactive show features a variety of Cuban styles such as mambo, cha cha, salsa, bolero, son, danzón, and conga, and includes works by Celia Cruz, Ernesto Lecuona, Ignacio Cervantes, Miguel Faílde, and Dámaso Pérez Prado, among others.

The Alonso Brothers
Equally talented, these brothers dazzle with their artistic exuberance and passionate expression. Having played the piano since they each were six years old, Orlando Alonso and Orlay Alonso both attended the National School of the Arts in Havana and earned degrees from Manhattan School of Music and Yale University, among several other prestigious institutions. As a duo, each brother brings his own signature style to the stage. Inspired by their communicative gifts, elegance, and polish, the Alonso brothers shine with a charismatic stage presence that is a pleasure to behold.

September 21 at 8: Arts Garage presents Greg Diamond and Nuance Quartet. Critically acclaimed guitarist, composer, and bandleader Greg Diamond creates music inspired by Latin American sounds and rhythms which he seamlessly infuses into the context of contemporary jazz — with modal harmonies, compound meters, and various other elements that comprise the vibrant and dynamic musical tapestry of his native city of New York. All About Jazz hails Diamond, who is of mixed Colombian and Jewish origin, as “a rising star in the New York jazz scene..” Latin Jazz Network writes that Diamond is a “composer of great maturity and genius” and featured his sophomore release “Conduit” [Dot Time 2012] as an Editor’s Pick for “Best Albums of 2012”. Indeed, Diamond has cultivated a distinguishable sound with his own his writing, a crack ensemble, and his use of the electric guitar — an instrument not often associated with this genre.

Diamond and his group have performed at numerous premier New York venues such as: The Blue Note, Iridium Jazz Club, Joe’s Pub, Smalls Jazz Club, Zinc Bar, and Nublu; not to mention numerous festival presentations, among them: The Madrid International Jazz Festival, Barranquijazz Festival, Jimmy Glass Jazz Festival, Teatro Libre Jazz Festival, Medejazz Festival, Jazz al Parque Festival, and the Nublu Jazz Festival. In 2007 he was a semi-finalist at The Gibson International Jazz Guitar Competition hosted by The Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, where he performed before jazz guitar legend George Benson. He has shared the stage with luminaries such as Seamus Blake, Steve Turre, Hector Martignon, Antonio Hart, John Benitez, Henry Cole, Oscar Stagnaro, Stacy Dillard, Emilio Solla, Michael Philip Mossman, Don Friedman, Gretchen Parlato, Asha Puthli, and many others.

Arts Garage is located at 94 NE 2nd Ave in Delray Beach. Tickets are $30-35-40 at artsgarage.org or 561-450-6357. BRING YOUR OWN … WHATEVER! The theater boasts cabaret-style table seating, where patrons can bring their own food and drinks, including alcohol. Music courtesy of KCC Productions.

“An accomplished composer and this, a rather admirable trait in any circumstance, is backed by greater musicianship – not mere virtuosity – with which to approach the guitar than many musicians on the instrument today” Raul Da Gama, Latin Jazz Network

“…Diamond’s music is energetic and transcendental, a subjective vision of the artist realized in masterful form, where melody, harmony, and rhythm converge in a unique coalition that transmits with eloquence and great expressive force…” – José Antonio García López, tomajazz.com

Friday, September 14 at 8 PM: Arts Garage presents Jonathan Joseph’s Weather Underground. Jonathan has had a remarkable career, working with some of the greatest musical minds of the modern era, one of whom was Josef Zawinul, a founder of the great fusion band Weather Report. Jonathan became a member of his later band, the Zawinul Syndicate, in 1994 -1995 but before that, he worked with former member of Jaco Pastorius’s Word Of Mouth band, the great Steel Drummer Othello Molineaux. As a member of Othello’s band, Jonathan played on Othello’s album entitled “It’s About Time.” Jonathan’s performance on this album helped launch the tremendous career he currently enjoys.

“The sound Jaco created represents the sound of South Florida and since I was born on Miami Beach, I have always been very honored to be associated with the sound of his music”.

With a view to keeping the spirit found in Jaco’s music and Weather Report’s (“WR”) catalogue alive, Jonathan has assembled a tremendous group of musicians capable of executing WR’s & Jaco’s collective catalogue, once again bringing life to the soundtrack of many people’s lives all over the world. Assembling the Weather Underground band, Jonathan reached out to longtime friend and fellow Zawinul Syndicate alumnus, guitarist Randy Bernsen, Cuban-born bassist and current member of Gonzalo Rubalcaba’s Volcan group Armando Gola, and current member of Othello Molineaux’s band, keyboardist Abel Pabon.

This powerhouse band will rock your world, playing tunes like: Black Market, Cannonball, Bird Land, Night Passage, Continuum, 3 Views of a Secret and many more…… These are concerts you don’t want to miss, as the band takes you in a trip back down memory lane. See you at the show!!!

Cuts in funding for the arts and after-school programs mean our students have fewer opportunities than ever, and as the news reports of youth violence continue to pour in, we are reminded all too often that this type of work has never been more important.

Purchase a ticket or become a sponsor, and be part of a movement that empowers deserving youth in our community to create, succeed and thrive! Learn more about Guitars Over Guns at www.guitarsoverguns.org.

Join some of Miami’s newest and most exciting singers as they go #TBT back to the ’80s and ’90s. Accompanied by a pianist and string quartet, they go back a few eras to demonstrate how pure, unvarnished music stands in contrast to the overproduced, overhyped pop Billboard hits of today. This particular concert is #Throwback Thursday, and it features songs you don’t hear nowadays. I’m particularly fond of the 80s, so there are songs including “Everybody Wants to Save the World,” “Time after Time,” “Careless Whisper,” and “Melt with You.” Donations will be requested to benefit the breakfast club of homeless ministries of the First United Methodist Church of Miami.

The Cuban Research Institute is pleased to announce the 14th installment of its annual concert series. From the sensuality and seductive melodies of the bolero, to the exotic and complex rhythms of the mambo and cha cha, Cuba’s rich musical heritage spans centuries and has influenced most popular music of our time. Virtuoso pianists and Cuban brothers Orlay Alonso and Orlando Alonso present an immersive experience that places the audience at the center of the “Golden Era” of Cuban music and entertainment of the 1940s and 1950s. This interactive show features a variety of Cuban styles such as mambo, cha cha, salsa, bolero, son, danzón, and conga, and includes works by Celia Cruz, Ernesto Lecuona, Ignacio Cervantes, Miguel Faílde, and Dámaso Pérez Prado, among others.

Equally talented, the Alonso Brothers brothers dazzle with their artistic exuberance and passionate expression. Having played the piano since they each were six years old, Orlando Alonso and Orlay Alonso both attended the National School of the Arts in Havana and earned degrees from Manhattan School of Music and Yale University, among several prestigious institutions. As a duo, each brother brings his own signature style to the stage. Inspired by their communicative gifts, elegance, and polish, the Alonso Brothers shine with a charismatic stage presence that is a pleasure to behold.

Friday September 28 from 8:00 to 9:30 PM: The City of North Miami presents Jazz at MOCA, featuring the Nestor Torres Jazz Ensemble in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. The FREE concert will be in front of the North Miami police station behind MOCA at 700 NE 124 Street.

Standing on the shoulders of flute giants from worlds as diverse as Rampal & Galway in Classical Music; Richard Egues’ Cuban Charanga style; rocker Ian Anderson’s Jethro Tull; Herbie Mann and – most influential of all – Hubert Laws as pioneers of Jazz Flute, Latin Grammy Award winning Nestor Torres’ rhythmic and mellifluous flute sound remains apart in a class all by itself. His 14 recordings as a soloist; 4 Latin Grammy nominations, one Grammy nomination and one Latin Grammy Award; collaborations with diverse artists such as Gloria Estefan, Kenny Loggins, Dave Mathews, Herbie Hancock, Tito Puente, Michael Camilo, Paquito D’ Rivera and Arturo Sandoval; as well as performances with the Cleveland, Singapore, and New World Symphony Orchestras among many others, are testament to the remarkable journey of an Artist who continues to grow and enrich the lives of those who experience his talents.

“It is a rare occasion that I have to consult a Thesaurus to find enough superlatives to describe this flautists performance. I could say “incredible” and not be close. “Fantastic” an understatement. “Impressive” would have to be in headline type.”… Speaking of masters, Nestor Torres is a maestro, a professore, technically perfect, with a tone that is beyond belief; imagination and creativity pervade every solo.”

Aug 24 at 8 PM: Arts Garage presents the Tal Cohen Jazz Ensemble. “A special talent that needs to be heard… Check him out!” – DownBeat Jazz Magazine

Tal Cohen’s unique piano style owes its roots to the Jewish folk songs and classical music he played in his formative years growing up in Israel. After moving to Australia at the age of 16, Tal continued his music studies at the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, where he completed his Bachelor degree jazz performance.

Currently, Tal is attending the University of Miami in the United States, where he received a full scholarship and teaching assistantship to complete his Masters degree under the mentorship of Martin Bejerano. During his time in the states he has had the opportunity to play with drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts, and West Coast-based trumpeter John Daversa.

One of the highlights of Tal’s career occurred when he received a call from Grammy Award-winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard to play a show with his Quintet at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. Blanchard also invited him to perform with the “Terence Blanchard Quintet” at the New Orleans Jazz Festival. Most recently, Tal appeared at the Perth Jazz Festival alongside acclaimed New York saxophonist Greg Osby.

“Tal Cohen is one of the brightest stars playing the piano to come along in a long time and has the promise of being at the top of the curve changing our minds about music.”

In addition, there will be food trucks, arts & craft vendors, and several fully stocked bars, offering everything from the best of Bud Light and mixed drinks to specialty flavored mojitos by Cruzan.

The festival will run from 7PM to 3AM and it will continue to be FREE to enjoy. With the purchase of a $10 donation ticket, people can help Venezuela, but also enjoy a free Bud Light and shot from the giant Aguardiente Ice Luge ($19 value). Cuatro Por Venezuela Foundation will receive 100% of that ticket, so they may continue to provide educational, medical, and nutritional aid to Venezuelans in need. “Venezuela is under a profound humanitarian crisis, and we want to do something about it. One of the great things about Miami is our ethnic unity and getting to witness the neighborly love as the melting pot of Latin cultures come together in times of need. We are eager to help in this time of desperation in Venezuela and are excited to contribute towards uniting others in helping as well,” says Tony Albelo, SWARM CEO. Make Music Day, the annual global celebration of music on the summer solstice, returns this year on Thursday, June 21 with more than 4,500 free outdoor concerts, music lessons, jam sessions and other exciting music-making events being held in over 70 U.S. cities in 31 States. New York City, Los Angeles, Austin Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Hartford, Madison, Miami, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Philadelphia, Salem (OR) and Nashville are among the numerous cities hosting major celebrations – as well as the entire states of Vermont and Connecticut – in what has become a worldwide phenomenon observed by hundreds of millions of people in 800 cities in 120 countries.

Completely different from a typical music festival, Make Music Day celebrates and promotes the natural music maker in all of us, regardless of ability. Reimagining their cities and towns as stages, every kind of musician – from bucket drummers and opera singers to hip-hop artists and marching bands – pours onto streets, parks, plazas, porches, rooftops, gardens and other public spaces to celebrate, create and share their music with friends, neighbors and strangers.

Launched in France in 1982 as the Fête de la Musique, Make Music Day is presented in the U.S. by The NAMM Foundation and coordinated by the nonprofit Make Music Alliance. This year Make Music Miami, a collaborative effort of Buskerfest Miami, the Rhythm Foundation and Guitars Over Guns will expand on its previous iterations to take over all of Miami Dade County, including the Mama Mia! Sing-Along Truck, a roving karaoke station in the back of a pickup truck, a house party in Westchester, over 30 performances on Lincoln Road, and even an experimental music performance of Dean Rosenthal’s Stones/Water/Time/Breath in the Amelia Earheart Park.

Other highlights include webcasting of live performances to multiple Miami-Dade Public Library locations (for weather-proof viewing pleasure), a specially-curated live DJ set for the morning commute by DJ Le Spam, as well as Mass Appeals that gather large groups of musicians to participate in impromptu performances using single instruments such as harmonicas, ukuleles, and drums.

To honor the celebration’s French beginnings, the day of festivities will conclude with a free performance by Worakls, the rising French DJ and electronic musician, at the North Beach Bandshell hosted by the French Embassy Cultural Services with the support of the France Florida Foundation for the Arts and the City of Miami Beach, Cultural Affairs Program, Cultural Arts Council. Opening sets by local artists Haitian musician Inez Barlatier and DJ APACHE and will start the evening.

All Make Music Day events are free and open to the public. Participants who wish to perform, or to host musical events, may register at MakeMusicMiami.org. A full schedule of events will be posted on the website in early June.

This celebration is supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Miami DDA and Lincoln Road BID and French Embassy Cultural Services.

Saturday June 16 at 8 PM: South Florida JAZZ at Bailey Hall concludes its season with a performance by Nicole Henry. Tickets are $35, $40, or $45 at baileyhall.org or by phone at (954) 201-6884. Students under 25 with ID pay $10. The concert will be preceded at 7:45 by “Ron’s 15,” outlining next season’s offerings.

“Elegant. Powerful. Stylish. Energetic. Mesmerizing. Expressive. Shimmering. Personable. Nicole Henry really is breathtaking, visually, and to the ears.”- Jodi Duckett, The Morning Call

Nicole Henry was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania to a musical family and was immersed in the arts, singing in church and school, while studying cello and ballet. Performance, however, was clearly her destiny. She matriculated at University of Miami and briefly pursued an acting career limited to commercials and voiceovers before acknowledging that she excelled at vocal jazz performance. Since her dazzling 2004 record debut, The Nearness of You, Nicole has established herself as one of the jazz world’s most acclaimed vocalists. However, it was the 2011 release of the acclaimed Embraceable CD that expanded her repertoire beyond standards, as she introduced original compositions and even a touch of gospel. She benefited from an all-star jazz band that included Kirk Whalum, Gerald Clayton, Julian Lage, Gil Goldstein, Larry Grenadier and Eric Harland.

Nicole possesses a potent combination of beauty, onstage charisma, impeccable phrasing, and powerful emotional resonance. Her repertoire includes the American Songbook, classic and contemporary jazz titles, blues, and originals. On this long-awaited date, Nicole will lead her outstanding quintet. Schnebly Redland's Winery
30205 SW 217th Avenue,
Homestead, Florida 33030

Cost: $15 – $20

On June 30, Schnebly Redlands Winery will release the Lychee fruits of their labor in a most entertaining way during their Lychee Summer Celebration (LSC), partnering for the first time with the South Dade Chamber of Commerce and the American Cancer Society. The family friendly event has been a source of pride to the area, with South Florida being the only place in the Continental United States where the Lychee fruit is grown. The celebration will begin at 2pm, when the Farmer’s Market opens with 50 vendors and six food trucks. At the Grand Tiki Culinary Lounge, guests will expand their food knowledge and watch Cooking Demos on how to incorporate lychee, local and organic foods in the kitchen. A family Mud Run, an awards ceremony, and live music will round out the celebration only to culminate with a patriotic fireworks display.

“This year’s Lychee harvest is the largest crop we’ve seen in years, not only did the trees survive Hurricane Irma, but the crop was actually improved by the stress of Irma; it’s a testament to the strength of the South Florida community and its agricultural roots,” says Peter Schnebly, Founder of Schnebly Winery. During the Summer Celebration, the Winery will be offering three Lychee wines, and three limited special release Lychee beers from Miami Brewing Company. Several South Florida restaurants and food trucks will offer their culinary take on the Lychee fruit by way of creative recipes, such as Lychee Seafood Ceviche and Lychee Martini Ice Cream. The possibilities are endless, and Schnebly can’t wait to see their partners get creative with this year’s harvest at the Culinary Grand Tiki Lounge featuring StartUP FIU Food Mentors such as Half Moon Empanadas, Pro Kitchen Hub, My Ceviche, and Lulu’s Ice Cream, to name a few.

While guests enjoy the different variations of Lychee, they can also browse 200+ classic/modern Chevrolet Corvettes, custom cars, Jeeps, 4x4s and other classics throughout the day. The Lychee Summer Celebration Meet Up will be hosted by Corvettes & Coffee and Cecil’s Jeep Fam. Guests can also explore over 40+ artisan and craft vendors in the Artist Colony as they sculpt, sew and sand down hand-made goods. In addition, Live Painting Sessions will showcase some of the area’s best muralists using 40 ft. long shipping containers as their canvas.

At 5pm, the first Schnebly Family Mud Run will kick off, benefitting the American Cancer Society to fund cancer research. Participating runners will be given a glow necklace to display the Cancer they’ll be running for, while conquering an “all new” course compete with obstacles. While the five-kilometer course will honor the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners during an official ceremony before the fireworks, every runner will receive a medal to commemorate their run. All proceeds from the run will go to the American Cancer Society, and anyone who buys a ticket for the run will get free admission to the Lychee Summer Celebration; family members get special pricing on LSC tickets with Runner Registration.

On August 15th, make your way to the opulent Faena Theater to witness prodigious jazz pianist Matthew Whitaker in concert as part of Faena’s second annual Summer Jazz Series.

At just 17 years old, this gifted musician has achieved international acclaim for his awe-inspiring talent and performed across the world in impressive venues, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the renowned Apollo Theater where, at age 10, he opened for Stevie Wonder. In addition to his on-stage acts, Whitaker has charmed millions through televised performances on NBC’s “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and FOX’s “Showtime at the Apollo,” on which he won first place.

A New Jersey native, Matthew Whitaker was born three months premature and later diagnosed with Retinopathy of Prematurity, which caused his blindness. At age 13, he became the youngest artist ever endorsed by Hammond, and at age 15, Whitaker was named a Yamaha Artist, becoming the youngest musician to join the stellar group of jazz pianists.

North Beach Bandshell

Cost: $20 advance / $25 day of concert / $35 Axis of Love series pass

Innov Gnawa is a young musical collective dedicated to exploring Morocco’s venerable gnawa music tradition in the heart of New York City. Formed in the summer of 2014 by Moroccan expat Samir LanGus, the group draws on the considerable talents and expertise of Hassan Ben Jaafer, a Maâlem, or master gnawa musician, originally from Fes, Morocco.

Gnawa music is the ritual trance music of Morocco’s black communities, originally descended from slaves and soldiers once brought to Morocco from Northern Mali and Mauritania. Often called “The Moroccan Blues”, gnawa music has a raw, hypnotic power that’s fascinated outsiders as diverse as writer/composer Paul Bowles, jazz giant Randy Weston, rock god Jimi Hendrix, and the contemporary artist Bonobo. The music is utterly singular, played on an array of unique instruments — from the lute-like sintir that the Maâlem uses to call the tune, to the metal qarqaba (castinets) with which the kouyos (chorus) keep time and pound out clattering, hypnotic rhythms.

In 2018, this annual series returns in collaboration with Miami Dade College’s MDC Live Arts. It invites audiences into a meditative space through instrumental, traditional and innovative sounds from the Middle East. With support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge and the Doris Duke Foundation, The Rhythm Foundation and MDC Live Arts create an opportunity to build a connection with cultures primarily in the public eye for conflict zones. Victoria Rogers, Vice President of Arts for Knight Foundation, said: “Few things can bring people together like the arts. Events like this series are a great prism for exploring our and other cultures, and for finding the threads that unite us all.”

In an immersive environment, the audience surrounds performers in an in-the-round stage setup. The evening also features culture-specific, traditional snacks and sweets to engage the audience in a multi-sensory experience.

MDC Live Arts presents Layali al-Andalus: National Arab Orchestra and Guests
Saturday, 05/12/2018 – 08:00 pm –
Olympia Theater
174 E. Flagler Street,
Miami, Florida 33131
Website
Cost: $65, $48, $35

Miami Dade College’s MDC Live Arts, Miami’s most eclectic performing arts series, closes its 2017-18 season with a gala event: Layali al-Andalus at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 12 at the Olympia Theater, featuring the National Arab Orchestra and special guests.

The Ojalá/ Inshallah season was named for the Spanish word for “I wish” and the Arabic phrase for “God willing” as a reminder of the Moorish impact on the Spanish language and Hispanic identity shared by so many greater Miami residents. This final performance, Layali al-Andalus, or “Andalusian Nights,” embodies the Arab-Hispanic connection, conjuring the oft romanticized historical place and time of cultural co-existence and exchange in an enchanting evening of Arab Classical music, flamenco and more.
Dedicated to performing and preserving the classical and contemporary traditions of Arab music, the 24-member National Arab Orchestra features violins and cellos alongside traditional instruments such as oud, qanun (zither), nay (reed flute) and a percussion section including riqq (Arab tambourine). The ensemble will be joined by esteemed Flamenco guitarist Jose Luis de la Paz, Flamenco dancer Niurca Marquez, and Flamenco singer Alejandro El Gambimbas (direct from Spain!); Arabic singers Marian Layousse, Abdallah Moussa, and Sephardic singer Susana Behar.

A pre-concert reception will celebrate the season, offering complimentary Mediterranean hors d’oeuvres and refreshments for all concert goers.
