Saturday August 10 at 8: Arts Garage presents Leslie Cartaya. Traditional Cuban music runs in her veins and jazz and American funk have shaped her artistic personality. Leslie admits to have discovered traditional Cuban and Brazilian music as she reminisces about her family, in particular her cousins. They were the first to teach her nursery rhymes and accompany her on the guitar while she sang.

Caribbean, Afro-American, Afro-Latin, and Latin American musical rhythms create a harmonious fusion in her debut CD, “No Pares,” a 19-track production, 18 of which she composed. “In this CD, my first experience as co-producer and musical arranger, I had the opportunity of working with renowned musicians who supported me every step of the way,” said this attractive brunette, who defines herself as a happy, adventurous, inquisitive, expressive, but most of all a perfectionist woman. With the release of “No Pares,” Leslie went up to the fifth position on the Miami Latin Reverbnation Charts and got nominated for the 2013 Latin Grammy as Best New Artist. In 2015 Leslie released her second solo album titled “Llevame Contigo.”

::About CHEE::

Chee is supported by G Jones, Bare Noize, Bassnectar, Moody Good, Noisia, DJ Craze, Culprate, Bleep Bloop, edIT (The Glitch Mob), Mat Zo and more…

Following several years of lateral experimentation in sound design, South African producer CHEE’s unique hybrid sound erupted into the international domain in 2016.

With growing hype around his fresh approach and uncompromising bass experimentation with a heavy dancefloor edge, labels started to take a deeper interest in the potential of one of the most promising names in low-end heavy electronica.

Taking influences liberally from his surroundings, as well as in the music that he wraps himself in from the likes of Noisia, Moody Good, Amon Tobin, Skrillex, Ivy Lab and Tsuruda – Chee’s sound has the potential to develop into a genre in its own right.

With an array of high profile releases lined up, and international touring commencing – the scene is set for this young and gifted artist to flourish.

His musical journey can be heard on his debut CD, “Dreams”. The music is enveloped in a smooth Latin Jazz format with a perfect balance of Afro-Peruvian rhythm and Jazz harmonies. All have been well-recived by critics.

He has also produced an instructional DVD called “The Real Latin Piano and the introduction to Afro-Peruvian Rhythms”. June 22 at 8: Arts Garage presents the Ed Calle Quintet. Dr Calle is a Latin Grammy winner for best Latin Jazz album, a five-time Grammy nominee, and one of the most recorded saxophonists in history. He is a saxophonist, composer, orchestrator, producer, scholar, professor, and leader. Calle is also known for his extraordinary ability to sight-read, interpret, and perform virtually any musical style.

It was obvious from the very start that Ed was a gifted musician. His energetic, passionate, and distinct sound captured the attention of audiences and musicians alike. His teachers and schoolmates often suggested that Calle’s sound is actually part of his DNA. Now, Calle can be heard on more than 1,200 albums, about 9,000 singles, and countless movie and television soundtracks both as a soloist, sideman, composer, arranger, conductor, and producer. “To classify this music as Latin Jazz is like saying the Parthenon is Greek Architecture. It’s true, but ignores the scope, dimension, and brilliance of the artifact.”

South Florida Jazz at Bailey Hall presents an Evening with Raul Midón and the Lionel Loueke Trio 6/15/19

South Florida Jazz at Bailey Hall presents an Evening with Raul Midón and the Lionel Loueke Trio
Saturday, 06/15/2019 – 08:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Bailey Hall
3501 Davie Road,
Davie, Florida 33314
Website
Cost: 40-50

Saturday June 15 at 8:00 PM: Genre-bending icons and Raul Midón and Lionel Loueke join forces to present a special night of incredible guitar and vocal wizardry. The acclaimed instrumentalists-singers will perform individual sets of original material in an evening that will culminate in an unforgettable jam backed by Loueke’s dynamic trio.

Raul Midón is celebrated as one of music’s most distinctive and searching voices. Heralded as a “one-man band, who turns a guitar into an orchestra and his voice into a chorus,” (NY Times), Midón has collaborated with Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder and even Snoop Dogg. Blind since birth, Midón produced-engineered his first Grammy-nominated album, Bad Ass and Blind, which confronts the challenges of blindness and musical composition. Midón’s 2018 follow-up release, If You Really Want, was nominated for a 2019 Grammy award in this same (Best Vocal Jazz) category.

Lionel Loueke brings his West African (Benin) roots and world music experience to jazz to color his unique phrasing as a guitarist and vocalist. A Herbie Hancock protégé for the past 10 years, Loueke has also recorded and toured with varied instrumentalists and vocalists. Praised by Hancock as “a musical painter,” Loueke combines harmonic complexity, soaring melody, a deep knowledge of African folk forms, and unconventional guitar techniques to create a warm and evocative personal sound. Paul Simon raves that Loueke is “one of a rare handful of guitarists who move effortlessly between his West African roots and modern American Jazz”, and Sting cites Loueke as “one the most original, essential and inspiring musicians on our planet today.”

Also featuring Massimo Biolcati, double bass, and Ferenc Nemeth, drums

Bailey Hall is located at 3501 DAVIE ROAD in Davie. Tickets are $40-45-50 at https://web.ovationtix.com/trs/pesptpm/10268678/1050329. Tickets for students under 25 are $10 with valid ID at the door. More info at the box office: 954-201-6884.

In celebration of Haitian Heritage Month, Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is thrilled to present Jean P Jam Haitian Project as part of its monthly “Jazz at MOCA” series. Jean Almatas (“Pokito”), born and raised in Haiti, is a talented singer and songwriter who brings deeply rooted music and expands what we know as “world music.” He calls his music “Rootsy Juicy.”

At age 28, Pokito joined the Magnum band, one of the most prominent bands in Haiti. In 1987, the band was invited for a USA tour and Pokito remained in New York City to perform with them for two years. He has worked with notable artists such as Richie Booker, Cedella Booker and some of Florida’s leading musicians, working as a highly sought-after freelancer. After touring Japan with Richie Booker, Pokito created the band Jean P Jam where he introduced his original world beat style called “Deep Roots.” The band has played in several festivals including Bob Marley Fest, One Love Nutrifest, Bay Jama Fest and Grand Opening Big Nite in Little Haiti.

The public is invited to enjoy the deep roots of Jean P Jam, rain or shine. Guests may also walk through MOCA’s exhibition “PÒTOPRENS: The Urban Artists of Port-au-Prince,” which brings together the work of many artists working in the Haitian capital. The exhibition highlights Port-au-Prince’s many diverse centers of cultural production, informal street life, religious heritage and mythologies to create a compelling portrait of a historically significant and intensely complex city in flux. Co-curated by Haitian-American artist and curator Edouard Duval-Carrié and British artist and curator Leah Gordon, PÒTOPRENS is a large-scale exhibition of sculptures, photographs, and films, accompanied by a recreated Port-au-Prince barbershop as well as extensive public programming.

MOAD MDC Presents: The Chaos Opera Performance by Andros Zins-Browne 5/26/19

MOAD MDC Presents: The Chaos Opera Performance by Andros Zins-Browne

Miami, Florida 33132

Zins-Browne’s The Chaos Opera draws upon Glissant’s defense of chaos as a mechanism for embracing difference. The performance brings together voices from diverse musical traditions—R&B, bolero, death metal, rap, and opera—to explore how different voices might cohabitate in the same space without capitulating, assimilating, or forcing cohesion. Rather than the idealized harmonies of “fusion” music, it asks how different voices can maintain their opacity in relation to each other, and how such a cacophony might allow new forms, voices, and hybrid languages to emerge. The Chaos Opera will be performed by Dyna Edyne, Michale Grafals, Celeste Landeros, Niuvis Martin, and Nad Pitt.

Reggae beats are taking over Wynwood on April 27 as three distinguished Latin American bands capture the audience at Mana Wynwood. Cultura Profética and Rawayana bring a new flavor to their now annual concert in Miami by adding Los Cafres to the line-up this year. SWARM, fastest-growing, premier event agency will be producing the concert for the second year in a row. Reggae fans will witness a historical evening as the top three bands perform for the first time together in Miami! Paco Lopez President of No Limit Entertainment, known for his work with Marc Anthony, Pitbull, Wisin & Yandel, Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Jennifer Lopez, Maluma, Mana, Laura Pausini, Residente, and many more, brought together the bands together to present one of the most iconic concerts in Wynwood!

Cultura Profética, originally from Puerto Rico and the headliners of the night, have reached over 2 million Spotify streams a month and is one of the few Latin American bands to record a “Spotify Single” independently. Throughout their remarkable career and strong reputation Cultura has gained worldwide recognition, they believe in using music as a form of activism in the community. In their 23-year trajectory, the versatile band uses music to express socio-political issues, the beauty of life, love, freedom, equality, and nature through harmonic touches of jazz, funk, and electronic, hip-hop, bossa nova, and the indisputable Afro-Caribbean rhythms. After the success of their single “Llevarte Allí” they announced the “Qualia” Tour launched in Argentina which was at the beginning of this year, they sure entertained over 20k fans per concert. They are currently recording a new album which is expected to be released in October.

Los Cafres, from Argentina, were the pioneers of reggae music in the ’80s. In the early ’90s, the band toured the basement bars and pubs of Buenos Aires with their first single “Frecuencia Cafre”. Their jump to popularity began with their album Quién da más? which held the hit single “Si el amor se cae.” With the release of this album, Los Cafres was recognized internationally as one of the current industry influencers on the Argentinian reggae scene.

The last of the three bands to be formed was Rawayana in 2007. They made a name for themselves in 2010 when participating in Venezuela’s “Festival Nuevas Bandas”, capturing the hearts of spectators with their eclectic rock/reggae beats. They subsequently released their first album “Licencia para ser libre” in 2011. In 2016, they released their most recent and third album called “Trippy Caribbean”. Their song “High” featuring Apache known throughout America and currently has 38 million reproductions on YouTube. Trippy Caribbean allowed them to be recognized internationally and toured through North America, Europe, and South America.

“ We take pride in always bringing top tier talent and concerts like this to fruition in our city” Said Javi Zayas, President of SWARM “Being a company owned by Hispanics and partnering up with powerhouses like No Limit Entertainment and Cosa Buena, Inc., allows us to give back to our roots all while breaking boundaries in the industry!“

The Fates…
Centuries ago, by chance – or perhaps, by “fate” – four long-lost soul-sisters were serendipitously brought together.

It wasn’t long before they discovered that they all shared a unified vision, finding themselfs identified with the empowering force of the Greek goddesses of destiny – The Fates.

In ancient Greece, these mythical goddess sisters were believed to spin, measure, and cut the threads of human fate.

With their cosmic spindle, they twist the fibers of our existence, spinning our dreams into reality. Though unlike the sisters of Greek mythology, the thread has no end – allowing for an infinite string of possibilities that may weave the beautiful, complex tapestry of our lives.

The Fates Collective are a nee twist in our generation, creating a new future; one built on love, support, and infinite creative freedom so the possibilities that anything can happen are infinite.

Through this concept and exceptional sound, their principal mission is to open our hearts to the universe, working with the unexplained magic that‘s part of their identity, aligning stars and creating an infinite string of “meant-to-be” moments.

There is no greater vessel for this than the connective power of music – and of course, the unbreakable force of love and unity. As the modern-day Fates, they are the sisters of destiny. The purveyors of possibility. Guardians of cosmic coincidence.

Don’t miss out this magnetic force.

Turkuaz at the North Beach Bandshell is presented by Live For Live Music in partnership with GMP Live and the Rhythm Foundation.

Opening set by Afrobeta.

Energetic splashes of funk, alternative, rock, R&B, and psychedelia color the music of Turkuaz. Balancing male-female harmonies, strutting guitars, wild horn arrangements, and interminable grooves, this spirit takes shape in the color donned by each respective member on stage nightly via larger-than-life performances.

The Brooklyn-based nonet —Dave Brandwein [guitar, vocals], Taylor Shell [bass], Craig Brodhead [guitar, keys], Michelangelo Carubba [drums], Chris Brouwers [trumpet, keys], Greg Sanderson [tenor sax], Josh Schwartz [baritone sax, vocals], Sammi Garett [vocals], and Shira Elias [vocals]—ignite an explosion of energy punctuated by neon hues, deft musicality, and show-stopping sing-alongs on their fifth full-length album, Life In The City.

The album, which includes co-production work from Jerry Harrison of The Talking Heads, sees the band stretch their sonic palette and cover new ground lyrically as they grapple with reality and get personal, finding the light in what can sometimes be a dark world. Yet even in the midst of serious subject matter creeping in on this album, the musicianship of all nine band members and the group’s upbeat, fun-loving sensibility still shines through to give Turkuaz fans the joyous sound they’ve come to know over the last several years.

10 Days of Connection is a community-led initiative to promote kindness and inclusion in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. From May 1-10, participants are invited to attend connection experiences hosted by more than 100 local organizations, and are challenged to step outside of their comfort zone to forge new connections across lines of difference.

In recent years, people have become increasingly divided across lines of difference. Incidents of hate have increased, and tolerance for differing ideas has decreased. For ten days each year, we challenge the entire community to break down silos and engage in acts of connection, to build empathy, to increase understanding, and to refocus on our shared humanity.

Join in! Our community will be stronger when we all commit to focusing on what unites us instead of what divides us. A full calendar of events is available at http://bit.ly/ConnectionEvents2019.

The Brooklyn-based nonet ignite an explosion of energy punctuated by neon hues, deft musicality, and show-stopping singalongs on their fifth full-length album, Life In The City.

“Turkuaz is made up of individuals, each their own shade of the color spectrum,” explains Dave. “Each person brings a signature style and embodies his or her own color. The respective auras come together to create our sound. The name itself implies that vibrancy, but it’s a different spin on turquoise. In the same way, we put a different spin on groove-oriented music by telling stories that you wouldn’t normally associate with funk.”

NAMI Miami-Dade County expects to attract thousands of people and seat close to 800 people at the 4th Annual Reel Minds Miami Mental Health Film Festival at the University of Miami’s Donna E. Shalala Center on Sunday, May 19, 2019 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. This year’s festival will showcase six short films. The narratives behind these films will share a range of life experiences meant to inspire, heal, and empower people. Following each short film, an individual with a lived experience of a mental health challenge will speak on the films’ topic for a few minutes providing further insight about the message behind each film.

This year’s lineup is comprised of films from a variety of talented directors, including a member of the International Cinematographers Guild, a multi-award-winning actor and Navy Veteran, and an award-winning filmmaker. The six films were chosen out of almost 200 submissions based on their compelling storytelling and way of educating and dispelling the myth behind mental illness. Submitted films were judged by film makers, clinicians, high school and college students, individuals with mental illness and their family members.

The 2019 lineup includes Terms of Us by director, writer, producer Roberto Sanchez, a Cuban born, Miami raised Navy Veteran who has a recurring role on Queen of the South. Additionally, Roberto will be speaking at the festival; Baby Steps from Los Angeles director, Eric Dyson; Misdirection by Carly Usdin, a University of Central Florida graduate with Miami ties, now an award-winning filmmaker based in Los Angeles; Reverie by Nick Markham; Saving Billy by Vickie Adams; and UkeLayla, directed and produced by a team of recent Miamians and graduates from the University of Central Florida.

“Films are a compelling storytelling form that connects with our deepest sensibilities, and research suggests that film festivals have a positive impact on stigma and recovery in mental illness. That’s why for the fourth consecutive year, NAMI Miami-Dade is showcasing a curated list of short films inspired by the lives of those who have been affected by mental illness,” says Kathryn Coppola, Executive Director at NAMI Miami. “Together, we can spark the awareness that makes the difference in our society.” NAMI Miami’s goal is to “end the silence” and to start the conversation about mental health proving that recovery is possible.

FSQ – Outside Garden

A FSQ Special Tribute to our brother Sa’d The Hourchild Ali

FSQ (Soul Clap Records / New York City)
Sergio Santos (Funky People, Get Physical / New York City)
Los Negros (Soul Clap Records / Miami)
Wendy Escobar (Mood Swing / Los Angeles)
+ Special Guest

FSQ (Soul Clap Records) DJ sets draw upon on their extensive catalog of remix and original productions and quality dance music across a variety of styles including funk, disco, house, northern soul, and their own brand of Sly and Robbie influenced new wave, dubbed “Caribbean Disco”. This Miami Music Week Party 2019 pays tribute to the late legendary FSQ and Parliament-Funkadelic member Sa’d ‘The Hourchild’ Ali who passed away unexpectedly last year. FSQ DJs are Chuck Da Fonk and Chas Bronz. Also expect one of Sa’d’s favorite legendary DJs and friends to throw a special set TBA night of event.

Also FSQ selected some of the best talent for honor Sa’d’s legacy – for instance, Sergio Santos, a name in electronic music that has become synonymous with deep techno, dark disco, funk, and classic house with unique sounds and other world selections. Taking influence from both the United States and Portugal’s dance music scenes, Sergio has a sound unique to his life experiences and surrounding environments. Sergio and Sa’d last played together at Art Basel 2017. Sergio’s wonderful new concept is FUNKY PEOPLE, a diverse conglomerate of artists, hosting weekly and monthly residencies throughout NYC, providing the soundtrack to this FUNKY life and celebrating love and friendship.

Los Negros are record label mates of FSQ via Soul Clap / Crew Love. Their sets present the finest rare and classic selections across genres spanning house, disco, funk, latin, and soul. Miami locals, they’ve also been holding down 305 parties like Scooch at Coyo Taco, 1-800-Lucky and Vagabond Miami and their music has graced several soirees at Barter Wynnwood in the past. They made their official Soul Clap Records debut in 2017 on the Soul Clap led compilation “ThreeOhFive Life” including cuts from both Los Negros, and Shane Vincent solo. Los Negros are also known for their deeply funky “Summer Edits” series on Crew Love.

Queens New York City born Wendy Escobar, another dear friend of FSQ’s, was championed by Sa’d The Hourchild Ali for her production and DJ talent. Now Los Angeles based, Wendy first became a regular name among house heads as the voice of Traxsource Live with over 4 Million online and FM radio Listeners. Wendy now hosts her own radio Show, “Mood Swing”, signed to the acclaimed “This Is Distorted” alongside Defected Radio, Deadmau5 and Drumcode. A passionate digger and lover of the old school, Wendy plays house, techno & deep house in both digital and vinyl formats, mixed with a healthy dose of dance classics.

Musically, if you have to put Joakim in a category, which he would probably disapprove, it would be the one of great experimental artists who had one foot in the avant garde and another in the pop world. Joakim has definitely left his fingerprints on current electronic music, modernizing and hybridizing it, tracing his very own path, with no concern for schools and genres, be it techno, krautrock, noise, ambient, R&B, post punk or everything “proto.” Joakim is without a doubt an outstanding DJ with a personal approach to blending genres and connecting dots in a seamless and unexpected ways. Saturday, March 16, 2019 – 8:00 p.m. John Scofeilds Combo 66 comes to Bailey Hall. Scofield is one of the most influential and innovative guitarists of his generation. He has spent the last 40+ years blazing a trail through the post-fusion wilderness, bringing his singular voice to a variety of different projects. His hallmark is his masterful improvising, and his music generally falls somewhere between post-bop, funk-edged jazz, and R&B.

Scofield’s résumé reads like a who’s who of the last 40 years of jazz. After graduating from the Berklee School of Music, his first recording was with Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker. He then replaced Pat Metheny in Gary Burton’s band and soon he would be performing with the likes of Charles Mingus, Billy Cobham, and Herbie Hancock, and Miles Davis, with whom he had an influential stint from 1982-85 that placed him firmly in the foreground of jazz consciousness as a player and composer.

South Florida JAZZ, the area’s premier jazz organization, continues its 27th season of presentation, and the second season of “South Florida JAZZ at Bailey Hall,” with the venerable JOHN SCOFIELD. The indomitable, genre-bending guitarist brings his new quartet, Combo 66, to South Florida to the delight of his legions of fans.

Bailey Hall is located on the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus at 3501 SW Davie Rd. in Davie and offers free parking. Tickets are $40-$50; $10 for students under 25 with valid I.D.; they are available by visiting southfloridajazz.org or baileyhall.org or contacting the Bailey Hall box office at (954) 201-6884.
