Turkuaz at the North Beach Bandshell is presented by Live For Live Music in partnership with GMP Live and the Rhythm Foundation.

Opening set by Afrobeta.

Energetic splashes of funk, alternative, rock, R&B, and psychedelia color the music of Turkuaz. Balancing male-female harmonies, strutting guitars, wild horn arrangements, and interminable grooves, this spirit takes shape in the color donned by each respective member on stage nightly via larger-than-life performances.

The Brooklyn-based nonet —Dave Brandwein [guitar, vocals], Taylor Shell [bass], Craig Brodhead [guitar, keys], Michelangelo Carubba [drums], Chris Brouwers [trumpet, keys], Greg Sanderson [tenor sax], Josh Schwartz [baritone sax, vocals], Sammi Garett [vocals], and Shira Elias [vocals]—ignite an explosion of energy punctuated by neon hues, deft musicality, and show-stopping sing-alongs on their fifth full-length album, Life In The City.

The album, which includes co-production work from Jerry Harrison of The Talking Heads, sees the band stretch their sonic palette and cover new ground lyrically as they grapple with reality and get personal, finding the light in what can sometimes be a dark world. Yet even in the midst of serious subject matter creeping in on this album, the musicianship of all nine band members and the group’s upbeat, fun-loving sensibility still shines through to give Turkuaz fans the joyous sound they’ve come to know over the last several years.

Your ticket comes with a free subscription to The New Tropic, Miami’s essential newsletter.

10 Days of Connection is a community-led initiative to promote kindness and inclusion in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. From May 1-10, participants are invited to attend connection experiences hosted by more than 100 local organizations, and are challenged to step outside of their comfort zone to forge new connections across lines of difference.

In recent years, people have become increasingly divided across lines of difference. Incidents of hate have increased, and tolerance for differing ideas has decreased. For ten days each year, we challenge the entire community to break down silos and engage in acts of connection, to build empathy, to increase understanding, and to refocus on our shared humanity.

Join in! Our community will be stronger when we all commit to focusing on what unites us instead of what divides us. A full calendar of events is available at http://bit.ly/ConnectionEvents2019.

The respective auras come together to create our sound. The name itself implies that vibrancy, but it’s a different spin on turquoise. NAMI Miami-Dade County expects to attract thousands of people and seat close to 800 people at the 4th Annual Reel Minds Miami Mental Health Film Festival at the University of Miami’s Donna E. Shalala Center on Sunday, May 19, 2019 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. This year’s festival will showcase six short films. The narratives behind these films will share a range of life experiences meant to inspire, heal, and empower people. Following each short film, an individual with a lived experience of a mental health challenge will speak on the films’ topic for a few minutes providing further insight about the message behind each film.

This year’s lineup is comprised of films from a variety of talented directors, including a member of the International Cinematographers Guild, a multi-award-winning actor and Navy Veteran, and an award-winning filmmaker. The six films were chosen out of almost 200 submissions based on their compelling storytelling and way of educating and dispelling the myth behind mental illness. Submitted films were judged by film makers, clinicians, high school and college students, individuals with mental illness and their family members.

The 2019 lineup includes Terms of Us by director, writer, producer Roberto Sanchez, a Cuban born, Miami raised Navy Veteran who has a recurring role on Queen of the South. Additionally, Roberto will be speaking at the festival; Baby Steps from Los Angeles director, Eric Dyson; Misdirection by Carly Usdin, a University of Central Florida graduate with Miami ties, now an award-winning filmmaker based in Los Angeles; Reverie by Nick Markham; Saving Billy by Vickie Adams; and UkeLayla, directed and produced by a team of recent Miamians and graduates from the University of Central Florida.

“Films are a compelling storytelling form that connects with our deepest sensibilities, and research suggests that film festivals have a positive impact on stigma and recovery in mental illness. That’s why for the fourth consecutive year, NAMI Miami-Dade is showcasing a curated list of short films inspired by the lives of those who have been affected by mental illness,” says Kathryn Coppola, Executive Director at NAMI Miami. “Together, we can spark the awareness that makes the difference in our society.” NAMI Miami’s goal is to “end the silence” and to start the conversation about mental health proving that recovery is possible.

FSQ – Outside Garden

A FSQ Special Tribute to our brother Sa’d The Hourchild Ali

FSQ (Soul Clap Records / New York City)
Sergio Santos (Funky People, Get Physical / New York City)
Los Negros (Soul Clap Records / Miami)
Wendy Escobar (Mood Swing / Los Angeles)
+ Special Guest

FSQ (Soul Clap Records) DJ sets draw upon on their extensive catalog of remix and original productions and quality dance music across a variety of styles including funk, disco, house, northern soul, and their own brand of Sly and Robbie influenced new wave, dubbed “Caribbean Disco”. This Miami Music Week Party 2019 pays tribute to the late legendary FSQ and Parliament-Funkadelic member Sa’d ‘The Hourchild’ Ali who passed away unexpectedly last year. FSQ DJs are Chuck Da Fonk and Chas Bronz. Also expect one of Sa’d’s favorite legendary DJs and friends to throw a special set TBA night of event.

Also FSQ selected some of the best talent for honor Sa’d’s legacy – for instance, Sergio Santos, a name in electronic music that has become synonymous with deep techno, dark disco, funk, and classic house with unique sounds and other world selections. Taking influence from both the United States and Portugal’s dance music scenes, Sergio has a sound unique to his life experiences and surrounding environments. Sergio and Sa’d last played together at Art Basel 2017. Sergio’s wonderful new concept is FUNKY PEOPLE, a diverse conglomerate of artists, hosting weekly and monthly residencies throughout NYC, providing the soundtrack to this FUNKY life and celebrating love and friendship.

Los Negros are record label mates of FSQ via Soul Clap / Crew Love. Their sets present the finest rare and classic selections across genres spanning house, disco, funk, latin, and soul. Miami locals, they’ve also been holding down 305 parties like Scooch at Coyo Taco, 1-800-Lucky and Vagabond Miami and their music has graced several soirees at Barter Wynnwood in the past. They made their official Soul Clap Records debut in 2017 on the Soul Clap led compilation “ThreeOhFive Life” including cuts from both Los Negros, and Shane Vincent solo. Los Negros are also known for their deeply funky “Summer Edits” series on Crew Love.

Queens New York City born Wendy Escobar, another dear friend of FSQ’s, was championed by Sa’d The Hourchild Ali for her production and DJ talent. Now Los Angeles based, Wendy first became a regular name among house heads as the voice of Traxsource Live with over 4 Million online and FM radio Listeners. Wendy now hosts her own radio Show, “Mood Swing”, signed to the acclaimed “This Is Distorted” alongside Defected Radio, Deadmau5 and Drumcode. A passionate digger and lover of the old school, Wendy plays house, techno & deep house in both digital and vinyl formats, mixed with a healthy dose of dance classics.

Joakim has definitely left his fingerprints on current electronic music, modernizing and hybridizing it, tracing his very own path, with no concern for schools and genres, be it techno, krautrock, noise, ambient, R&B, post punk or everything “proto.” Joakim is without a doubt an outstanding DJ with a personal approach to blending genres and connecting dots in a seamless and unexpected ways. Saturday, March 16, 2019 – 8:00 p.m. John Scofeilds Combo 66 comes to Bailey Hall. Scofield is one of the most influential and innovative guitarists of his generation. He has spent the last 40+ years blazing a trail through the post-fusion wilderness, bringing his singular voice to a variety of different projects. His hallmark is his masterful improvising, and his music generally falls somewhere between post-bop, funk-edged jazz, and R&B.

Scofield’s résumé reads like a who’s who of the last 40 years of jazz. After graduating from the Berklee School of Music, his first recording was with Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker. He then replaced Pat Metheny in Gary Burton’s band and soon he would be performing with the likes of Charles Mingus, Billy Cobham, and Herbie Hancock, and Miles Davis, with whom he had an influential stint from 1982-85 that placed him firmly in the foreground of jazz consciousness as a player and composer.

South Florida JAZZ, the area’s premier jazz organization, continues its 27th season of presentation, and the second season of “South Florida JAZZ at Bailey Hall,” with the venerable JOHN SCOFIELD. The indomitable, genre-bending guitarist brings his new quartet, Combo 66, to South Florida to the delight of his legions of fans.

Bailey Hall is located on the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus at 3501 SW Davie Rd. in Davie and offers free parking. Tickets are $40-$50; $10 for students under 25 with valid I.D.; they are available by visiting southfloridajazz.org or baileyhall.org or contacting the Bailey Hall box office at (954) 201-6884. The box office and phone lines are open Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m.; Saturday from 7:00 p.m. until curtain time. All performances commence at 8:00 p.m.

Mystic leaders Bedouin will be joining Lee for All Day I Dream’s 2019 Miami edition, along with Tale + Tone co-founder Hoj, and the rising Newman-each of which are proven leaders in the melodic house and tech arena.

2018 represented yet another unprecedented year for the All Day I Dream camp, who continued to make headway into new countries and locales across the globe. In addition to a successful return to newer destinations like Chicago and Dubai and showcases at prime festivals like Secret Solstice, BPM and ADE, the brand also debuted in cities like Mykonos, Ibiza, Istanbul, and Las Vegas-cementing its status as a global force for deeper, emotive shades of dance music. Dreamy décor, unbridled positive energy from guests and performers, and emphasis on connection via music translates to its reputation as one of the world’s best parties and a place where guests are guaranteed to blissfully lose themselves under the beaming sun.

The All Day I Dream label continues to grow as well, with an unrelenting commitment from Lee to supporting new and well-established artists that are breaking the status quo musically. One such example is the recent Adagio EP from Double Touch, a new project from Mark Olsen and classical pianist Van-Anh Nguyen that fuses classical into underground dance music. Other recent releases include Death On The Balcony’s landmark Shift The Perspective EP, and Sebastien Leger’s anthemic Underwater Rocket. The latter climbed deep house charts and later became one of the label’s top records of 2018.

Ever since a young age, Ruben Caban has found great joy and satisfaction in making music and sharing it with fans and people all over the world.

Ruben seeks to offer something different and unique to his fans by creating original compositions that are a fusion of Latin jazz, hard-bop and funk into a sound he can proudly call his own. His ensembles are adjusted to fit the venues and the style which the audience demands. From a fiery Latin Jazz septet or sextet to a sophisticated quintet or an intimate quartet his music is meant to touch the hearts and minds of the listener and even encourage some dance moves with the more rhythm-infused numbers.

In his performance career he has toured, performed, or recorded as a sideman and soloist with an array of internationally renowned artists, for example Frankie Valli, Jon Secada, Ed Calle, Nicole Henry, Dianne Schuur, Randy Brecker, Arturo Sandoval, Ira Sullivan, The Platters, Nestor Torres, The O’Jays, Oscar De Leon, La India, Paquito De Rivera, and more, and is part of Ed Calle’s 2015 Latin Grammy award winning album “Ed Calle Presents Mamblue.”

There are few names as recognizable and well received in the Miami music scene as Afrobeta, instantly lighting up the eyes and ears of those who hear it. Bread from the melting pot of culture in Miami’s streets, the duo of Cuci Amador and Tony “Smurphio” Laurencio fuse electronic production with the romance of an open mind. Afrobeta is the antithesis of an inside joke; their infectious beats form an effortless blend of quirk and skill that invites even the most reluctant of on-listeners into a world where color and fun roam free – a universal message that requires no interpreter. Recently they were voted Best Band by Miami New Times and we knew they were the perfect group to have us kick off our Opening Weekend of events.

An international group of renowned classical musicians from the English Chamber Orchestra, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will gather to perform a series of three intimate concerts for Surfside visitors and residents this holiday season.
Named after the founder’s late father, who was a part-time Surfside resident and music lover, The Glenn Douglas Winter Chamber Music Festival will run from Saturday, December 29, 2018, to Wednesday, January 2, 2019, and will feature uniquely themed concerts with pieces ranging from Mozart and Beethoven to Schulhoff and Britten.

“Although my father was not a musician, he was passionate about music, as well as his second home here in South Florida,” said event founder and violinist Shana Douglas. “It is in an honor to pay tribute to his legacy by bringing world-class musicians to Surfside. I know that he will be with us in spirit as we celebrate the joys of life and music this holiday season.”

Douglas will be joined by violinist Winona Fifield, violist Jessica Chang, cellist Adam Satinsky and soprano Shir Rozzen. The three-concert series will kick off with “Let us Serenade You” on Saturday, December 29, at 7:30 p.m. at the Ritz-Carlton Bal Harbour and conclude with “Fantasies and Remembrances” at the same venue on Wednesday, January 2, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 per person for each event, including a complimentary glass of champagne.

Saturday December 8 at 8 PM: The South Motors Jazz Series at Pinecrest Gardens presents Christian McBride’s New Jawn. McBride can be likened to a force of nature, fusing the fire and fury of a virtuoso with the depth and grounding of a seasoned journeyman. With a career now blazing into its third decade, the Philadelphia native has become one of the most requested, most recorded, and most respected figures in the music world today. Raised in a city steeped in soul, McBride moved to New York in 1989 to pursue classical studies at the Juilliard School. There he was promptly recruited to the road by saxophonist Bobby Watson. Call it a change in curriculum: a decade’s worth of study through hundreds of recording sessions and countless gigs with an ever-expanding circle of musicians. Currently he hosts and produces “The Lowdown: Conversations With Christian” on SiriusXM satellite radio and National Public Radio’s “Jazz Night in America,” a weekly radio show and multimedia collaboration between WBGO, NPR and Jazz at Lincoln Center, showcasing outstanding live jazz from across the country. He brings that same breadth of experience to bear as Artistic Advisor for Jazz Programming at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC). In March 2016, Mr. McBride became artistic director of the now 63-year-old Newport Jazz festival — taking the reins directly from its 91-year-old co-founder, George Wein.

Featuring: Christian McBride, bass; Justin Faulkner, drums; Josh Evans, trumpet; Marcus Strickland, sax.

Pinecrest Gardens is located at 11000 SW Red Road. Tickets are $35-$40 at https://www.pinecrestgardens.org/entertainment/concerts-theater-dance/south-motors-jazz-series or 1.877.496.8499. (For pre-concert dinner reservations and info call 305.988.5089.) Music courtesy of KCC Productions.

Self-described as an “interpreter”, LA Kennedy is best known for her high contrast, monochromatic images of American pop culture icons. The self-taught artist draws inspiration from music legends while merging pop art influences from Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol. Her ability to hear colors while seeing sounds, allow her to translate audio into the visual, creating awe-inspiring textured images on the canvas. The unique juxtaposition of crisp imagery and rough texture, pull you in and dare you to reach out and touch the canvas.

“South Florida JAZZ at Bailey Hall” Presents The Randy Brecker Quintet Friday, January 18 – 8:00 p.m.
Jazz trumpeter Randy Brecker was born in Philadelphia to a musical family that included his late brother Michael, a remarkably influential tenor saxophone innovator. The brothers had created individually successful careers, but they shared a very special bond, often working together from 1975 on, as the Brecker Brothers Band, which garnered five GRAMMY Awards with their final two recordings.

Randy is a supremely gifted player who adds a solid dimension to every musical situation and configuration. He is most comfortable in his own band, a hard-swinging quintet with Randy’s wife, Ada Rovatti, sharing the frontline. The group’s repertoire gives more than a nod to the unforgettable Brecker Brothers.

Bailey Hall is on the Broward College A. Hugh Adams Central Campus
3501 SW Davie Rd. Davie, FL 33314. Tickets are $40-$50; $10 for students under 25 with valid I.D.

This fall, soulful and innovative multi-instrumentalist and singer Zach Deputy will hit the ground running on an 18 city east coast US tour and is making a stop at the North Beach Bandshell in Miami Beach on December 2! Concertgoers can look forward to a unique live music experience as Zach plays a different set every night as an ultimate expression of living in the moment, with the hopes of opening windows to people’s souls to remind them of how good it feels to be alive. He describes his style as “island-infused drum n’ bass gospel ninja soul.”

His one man show creates a unique experience straight from the soul every night, raw and uncut with absolutely nothing prerecorded. As a pioneer of looping and synth guitar work well ahead of his time, he’s taken the technology to uncharted lands delivering a pocket groove unique to the ears. Zach says, “call me crazy, but I’ve always believed live music should always be live, but I’ve also always loved a good tranced out dance party too.” With this in mind he tailored his performances to meet his convictions. Combining his family roots Island vibe with his low country southern soul, a pinch of tranced out hippy hop, and a vast amount of talent, Zach’s sound emerges in focus.

In making his fourth album Wash It in the Water, Zach Deputy dreamed up a sunny and soulful new sound that fuses funk, and folky pop with the spirited rhythms of soca and calypso. With that sound embodied by the album’s brightly melodic and richly textured title track, Wash It in the Water finds the Georgia-based singer/ songwriter/ multi-instrumentalist mining his Puerto Rican and Cruzan heritage for inspiration.

“Because of the music I was raised on, I’ve always heard rhythm in a very tropical, Latin-esque way—it’s something that resonates in the deepest parts of me,” says Deputy, who grew up in South Carolina. “When I was a kid my grandma would play a lot of salsa and soca and make me get up and dance to it, so in a way this is me putting my own spin on all that and bringing those sounds into a whole new era.”
