FLIPANY will host its annual “Chefs Up Front” fundraising dinners this August at The Biltmore in Coral Gables and the W Fort Lauderdale. This popular epicurean adventure showcases the talent of 10 of South Florida’s most acclaimed chefs who prepare a five-course signature dinner tableside for their guests. Each table’s menu is unique and complemented by sommelier-selected wines. One hundred percent of the proceeds benefit Share Our Strength’s Cooking Matters® program, which connects families with healthy food by teaching them how to prepare nutritious and delicious meals on a limited budget.

The evening is hosted by radio personalities Kimmy B. of Hits 97.3 and Julie Guy of 101.5 LITE FM, both of whom are long-time FLIPANY supporters. The evening will begin with a special reception and silent auction while hors d’oeuvres and specialty cocktails are served. Following the reception, each chef will prepare his or her signature courses in an intimate dinner setting. An after party will follow where guests can mingle with the chefs.

Tickets are $250 and available with a discount of $50 Off until July 10 (use discount code CUF50EB). Ticket prices increase to $250 per person on July 11, 2018.

In honor of Earth Day, the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society invites visitors of all ages to celebrate the living planet we call home! This year’s Earth Day theme is “End Plastic Pollution” and the riverside attraction will host the South Broward High School Coral Club who will demonstrate how we can stop water pollutants and help heal the aging coral on our reefs. Nova Southeastern University Halmos College Peer Educators will also be on-hand to answer questions about the marine ecosystem that surrounds us and Colorful Warrior Writers will offer a breezy literary respite from an otherwise warm and bustling day of activities on the New River.

Free (in front of The Historic New River Inn). For those wishing to extend their stay and visit the museum, general admission is $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). Admission is free for members, military and children ages six and under.

In addition to its entertainment music schedule, L Bar launched a new cocktail menu last month featuring nine unique offerings. The menu has been divided into: Culinary Influenced, Classics and Not So Classic. Menu highlights include the Culinary Influenced Bacon & Eggs featuring bacon-infused Buffalo Trace Bourbon, egg white, fresh lemon, honey and black pepper. New Classics include Dark n’ Stormy – a Bermuda classic, made with Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum instead of the traditional Gosling’s Rum. The latest addition to L Bar’s Not So Classic offerings is the Hibiscus Punch made with Flor de Caña Rum, fresh lemon, hibiscus syrup, pineapple and raspberries.

For those looking for a refreshing spirit-free drink, creative offerings remain on the menu including the Blood Orange Cooler with blood orange, lime, agave, soda water, and mint; Grape Rosemary Smash with green grapes, honey, simple syrup-infused rosemary, lime and soda water, topped with rosemary sprigs; and Watermelon Cilantro Fresca with watermelon chunks, cilantro, lime, agave, simple syrup, soda water and a pinch of salt.

The property also hosts Hard Rock Sessions, a series of impromptu, intimate live musical performances by both well-known and rising alternative rock acts. Recent performers have included Bastille; Portugal. The Man; New Politics and more. Grammy-winning rocker Melissa Etheridge has also graced the L Bar musical stage to play a set of her top hits and mingle with fans. Local non-profit Saludarte Foundation, whose mission is to improve the health of youth and other socio-economic disadvantaged groups through the arts, announces 8-week run of Seeking the Essence, a unique artistic exhibition featuring 18 works of award-winning author and illustrator Menena Cottin. Various community events are programmed for the fully bilingual, family-friendly and interactive exhibition including author presentations, family days and a public opening reception on April 26, 2018, 6-9p.m.

Menena Cottin has already touched the lives of many. Her books celebrate curiosity as the author explores themes like: experiencing colors as a blind child, living in a world turned upside down and how reality is really a matter of perspective. Simple in their aesthetics, but profound and transformational in their messages, Menena Cottin’s books have been recognized by the New York Times, The Bogota Post, The Indian Express and the School Library Journal’s Best Books for Children, and some have been translated into as many as 20 languages. Deliver the Dream, a South Florida-based nonprofit organization that organizes retreats for families experiencing a serious illness or crisis, presents its 6th Annual Red Hot Party at Hunters. Generously amplified by Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and hosted by Daisy Dead Petals & Electra, this year’s free anticipated event begins at 7 p.m. with a scorching charity date auction showcasing some of South Florida’s most eligible LGBTQ bachelors and bachelorettes of all ages.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Deliver the Dream’s first-ever LGBTQ Youth Retreat that will host as many 15 families (at no cost to the participants) to help them enhance coping skills, reduce stress and cultivate relationships with other families who have a child struggling with “coming out.” The retreat will also incorporate an HIV educational component and offer therapeutic discussions for both teens and parents. This retreat, along with nine other planned yearly retreats spanning various crises and medical conditions including autism, cancer, Down syndrome and epilepsy, combines traditional recreational activities with therapeutic activities, peer-to-peer discussion groups and expressive arts and music activities.

Guests will have the opportunity to mix and mingle with the select group of LGBTQ bachelors and bachelorettes who come with their own unique accompanying entertainment packages which may include concert tickets, outdoor adventures, performing arts shows, sporting event seats plus dinner and much more, plus bid on silent auction items, enjoy drink specials and have fun while benefiting a great cause.

Founded in1981 in Jamestown, NY, 10,000 Maniacs is one of the most enduring bands from the early “alternative rock” movement having released close to 20 albums, including 2015’s Twice Told Tales and 2016’s Playing Favorites, while consistently touring the U.S. and abroad. This multi-platinum band still receives rave reviews of their live perfomances.
While 2017 marked the the 30 year anniversary of the release of 10,000 Maniacs’ critically acclaimed, break-out album, In My Tribe, which Rolling Stone Magazine included in their “100 Best Albums Of The Eighties”, 2018 marks 3 significant anniversaries for the band. It was 25 years ago in 1993 that that 10,000 Maniacs made their iconic performance on MTV’s “Unplugged”; the released recording would go on to sell millions of copies. Later, in that same year, Mary Ramsey, a backing vocalist on “Unplugged,” began her tenure as lead singer for the band. And 2018 marks the 35th anniversary of the release of their first full-length recording, Secrets of the I Ching, which caught the attention of BBC radio legend John Peel, who brought the band to the attention of millions of listeners worldwide. To celebrate these milestones on their 2018 tour, 10,000 Maniacs will play select acoustic sets including songs from Secrets of the I Ching and MTV Unplugged as well as their hit songs.

The Fort Lauderdale Historical Society will host an exclusive “Behind the Stacks” Tour of its Hoch Heritage Research Center, Library and Archive. This unique, exciting and educational tour, in remembrance of the centennial anniversary of the end of World War I, will feature rare books, curated photos and artifacts that highlight diverse perspectives of how residents of Florida and early Fort Lauderdale participated in the Great War. The special program is being held in honor of the 60th anniversary of National Libraries Week and in recognition of National Library Workers Day.

This year’s honorees are Dolores Huerta, president and founder of the Dolores Huerta Foundation and co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America with Cesar Chavez, with the Harvey Milk Foundation Honors Medal award presented by Stuart Milk, nephew of the late civil rights icon, Harvey Milk (1930-1978). Craig Stevens, WSVN-TV anchor, David Richardson, Florida State Representative serving District 113 and current primary candidate for Congress in Florida’s 27th District and the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Gay-Straight Alliance will also be recognized as local leaders who have made a significant impact on improving the quality of life for the LGBTQ community.

The magical evening will commence with an elegant cocktail reception featuring live entertainment and an interactive balloon pop and raffle of more than 200 luxury items. Families will have a whale of a time at the 3rd annual Earth Day celebration hosted by the Town of Surfside. Come connect, play, and celebrate beautiful Mother Earth alongside family and friends, while learning about conservation and ways to protect the planet. Festivities to include a community project using recycled water bottles to create a large jellyfish, a rescue bird release in partnership with Pelican Harbor Seabird Station, in addition to turtle-y awesome arts & crafts, henna tattoo artist, light refreshments, DJ and T-shirt giveaway.

At this educational green event, participants will help kickoff turtle nesting season, which typically takes place from May – October in Surfside. The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) continues its hands-on interactive art classes Creative Arts 4 Kids, on the first Saturday of every month. Creative Arts 4 Kids runs simultaneously with the school year from October through May. Each month, classes have a different theme focusing on the work of a contemporary artist and introducing students to art creation processes through drawing, painting, and sculpture.

Son Jarocho is a regional folk music and dance style from the Veracruz, Mexico. It carries with it a culture of community, celebration and participation. Koubek Center offers up a fun-filled day with participation by Miami’s own Ameyal Mexican Cultural Organization, whose mission is to cultivate an appreciation for Mexican traditional culture through inventive and immersive presentations, and Chicago’s Ida y Vuelta folkloric ensemble, who bring to life 300 year old traditional Mexican folk music on jaranas (8 string small guitars), requinto (lead 4 string guitar), leona (acoustic bass), zapateado (percussive foot tapping) and the cajon (wood Peruvian box).
The festivities will include craft-making, music and dance (zapateado) workshops; a story time; a theater performance by the Ida y Vuelta folkloric ensemble; and Balaju: a puppet odyssey/ play, and they day will culminate with a parade of mojigangas (giant head puppets specific to San Miguel de Allende and Oaxaca) in the gardens.

The Playtime series provides parents an engaging (and free!) way for their children to learn and practice Spanish. The fun and interactive family days highlight the diverse arts, crafts, literary histories, and music and dance of the city’s many Hispanic cultures. Children will be invited to sing, dance, create and speak together en español. The Playtime series will continue with Earth Day: Rumba Flora led by educator and Grammy-nominated singer Rita Rosa on Saturday, Apr. 28.

Ancient civilizations were known to entrust the winds of March to carry their wishes to the divine. On Friday, March 23rd, Faena Forum will call upon the awakened for a night of multi-disciplinary magic with Noche de Brujas, a festive celebration of female-driven performance art merging ancient rituals, visual art, technology, music, dance and more to create a contemporary ritual for the 21st century.

An “anti-concert” at the height of Miami Music Week, Noche de Brujas features an impressive line-up of artists who work with sound and music alongside musicians with strong visual language to create an immersive experience like no other. These eclectic artists align themselves with the esoteric and the spiritual, engaging in practices that verge on the shamanistic and the “brujeria,” including tarot readings, psychic divination and Yoruba religion as it is practiced in Afro-Cuban tradition.

Through each of their crafts, these artists are modern-day goddesses, sirens, aliens and witches who together will explore the gray areas between music and art, sacred and profane, traditional and futuristic – ultimately embracing the “witch” architype as a feminist and anti-patriarch in a larger movement that challenges preconceived notions of systems, knowledge, power…and the unknown.

The Noche de Brujas ceremony begins with a ritual cleansing of Faena Forum by Afro-Cuban dance and music group IFE-ILE, followed by an offering to Oshun, the Yoruba goddess of the river representing womanhood in all of her forms. Through this practice, the space is converted into a living altar featuring inspired collaborative works by visual artists Virgo and Carlos Betancourt.

The night’s celebrations continue with a series of live performances, musical acts and immersive installations by Juliana Huxtable, Poorgrrrl, Voila Snow, Georgia Wall, Sandflower, Kalup Linzy, Jen DeNike, and Suzi Analogue.

Saturday March 24, 1-4 PM FREE: The Liincoln Road B.I.D. presents “Live on Lincoln” featuring the Felipe Fontanelle Brazil Project, at 1111 Lincoln Road. A native of São Paulo, Brazil, Felipe Fontanelle developed his taste in music listening to many of the great performers and composers of Bossa Nova, MPB and Jazz. He studied at the “Conservatório Souza Lima” in São Paulo and the Jazz School “Hot Clube Portugal”. He joined the cast of the musical “Amigos do Peito” in and recorded the album’s project, which toured around Portugal. He released his first solo album, by Universal Music, in both Portugal and Brazil. Felipe’s latest single, “Deus Também Sorri”, is a Felipe Fontenelle and Antonio Ladeira partnership. The song was produced in Rio de Janeiro by Luiz Claudio Ramos (Chico Buarque’s musician, producer and arranger). The video was made by award-winning Portuguese director Pedro Varela. The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami is celebrating Women’s History Month with Chloe Dolandis as part of its monthly Jazz at MOCA series. Recognized as a young voice with an old soul, Dolandis moves the audience with her powerful vocals and commanding stage presence.

Appealing to a wide range of audiences and locally recognized, Dolandis’ talents are very versatile and explore multiple genres. Her debut album, “Bring Back the Fever,” is a unique, stylistic blend of jazz, pop and soul, while her EP, “There’s More,” offers a more intimate side of her voice and songwriting abilities. Dolandis’ country song, “One Man’s White Trash (Is Another Man’s Treasure),” was a finalist in the prestigious NSAI Song Contest presented by CMT and her pop/soul song, “Solid Woman,” was a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition’s Performance Category.

For our last concert of the season on Monday, April 9, 2017 at 7:30pm, the M building will open its doors to the most exciting and fierce as well as tranquil and comforting concert ever presented by musimelange. Discover the unpredictable baroque music with the coloratura mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux* that brings opposites together for a powerful performance.

Gulfstream Park will celebrate Thoroughbred Aftercare on Saturday, March 24 when it plays host to Florida TRAC Day, featuring retired horses, meet-and-greets with jockeys, dachshund races and an on-line auction.

Florida Thoroughbred Retirement and Adoptive Care (TRAC) was created in 2009 to find “forever” homes for retired Thoroughbreds. The inaugural Florida TRAC Day will begin at 8 a.m. with Breakfast at Gulfstream and continue during live racing beginning at noon.

During Breakfast at Gulfstream fans can meet Skip Away (G3), Fred Hooper (G3), Monmouth Cup (G2) and Iselin (G3) winner Valid, who earned $1 million before being sold for $15,000 at the Keeneland January Sale in 2017. Juarez, who won his first graded stakes aboard Valid, adopted the gelding when his return to the races was unsuccessful in Nebraska. Juarez will also attend Breakfast at Gulfstream. 

Throughout the day Gulfstream will share stories of retired Thoroughbreds in new careers, including two recently-adopted from Florida TRAC by two-time bronze medal winning U.S. Pan American Team rider Todd Minikus.

Florida TRAC Day will also include Dachshund races beginning at 11 a.m., and a Florida TRAC booth where those donating will receive a free t-shirt and magnet.

Tino Sehgal creates works that are constructed situations which question the traditional subject-object relationship of visual art, and in which the interaction between the visitor and the work takes a central position. Sehgal takes language, singing, dancing, and other modes of behavior as his artistic material, often generating immersive artworks that are felt more than they are seen. This Situation (2007) enables a conversation that throws into question our self-image as a society and our roles as individuals within that society.
Sehgal is a Berlin-based artist whose work has been widely shown internationally. He won the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2013. Among many other places, Sehgal’s work has been exhibited at the Guggenheim in New York, the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the 12th Havana Biennial, and the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo in Brazil.

This Situation is part of the Living Together Performance Series, a year-long cross-disciplinary series featuring performance art, installations, film and video screenings, readings, talks, and workshops, reflecting the cultural, social, and political realities of how we live now.

Jean Almatas (“Pokito”) is a talented singer and songwriter, bringing us deeply rooted music, and expands what we know as world music.The band played in several Festivals such as Bob Marley fest, One Love Nutri fest, Bay Jama Fest in Islamorada in the Keys, and Grand opening Big Nite in Little Haiti. Jean P Jam since then has been performing in local clubs, among which is his current base at Purdy Lounge, where every Monday night he brings the essence of music to everyone from all ethnic backgrounds. Pokito calls his music “Rootsy Juicy.”

At 28, he joined Magnum band, one of the most prominent bands in his native Haiti. In 1987 the band was invited for a USA tour and Pokito remained in New York City performing with them for 2 years. He has worked with such notable artists as Richie Booker (Bob Marley’s brother), Cedella Booker (Bob Marley’s mother), and Florida’s leading musicians, working as a highly sought after freelance. Pokito played for a few Local bands such as: No Man Gin, Me and the Blue Dog as rock musician, The Aristocrats as Soca and reggae musician. After touring Japan with Richie Booker, he decided to put his band (Jean P Jam) together in 2002 where he introduced his original world beat style called “Deep Roots.”

the Office., an art gallery founded by collectors Matthew Chevallard and Daniel Berkowitz, is hosting an opening party for their latest exhibition from Toronto-based painter Thrush Holmes and Los Angeles-based multimedia artist Matt McCormick. The exhibition will feature McCormick’s paintings and drawings, which reflect the multitudinous and often conflicting histories of California and Holmes’ diverse compositions, which embodies abstract paintings and photographic-based mixed-media. This will be the first time both artists showcase their work in Miami, so don’t miss the opportunity to witness these talented artists and support two enthusiasts of the arts. Open until May 1.

The Biltmore Hotel’s hosts its Annual Beer, Bourbon, Burgers and Blues Fest with the renowned American blues singer, guitarist and song writer Albert Castiglia, a Coral Gables-native who in 2017 was nominated for Best Contemporary Blues Male artist and Best Rock Blues Album-Big Dog by the Blues Foundation. Featuring Bulleit Bourbon and Estrella Beer, guests will be able sip on free tastings of bourbon and beer while feasting on scrumptious craft burgers including beef, shrimp, vegetarian and lamb options. There will be a $10 cash bar for other refreshments. Must be 21+ to attend. Tickets must be purchased in advance online as no tickets will be sold at the door. Join us for a conversation with Miami-based artist Cara Despain on the art historical understanding of landscapes as idealized settings and our contemporary perceptions. Despain will reference visual culture starting with the Hudson River School painters to her contemporary depictions of the American landscape.

Cara Despain was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. She received her BFA in Drawing and Painting from the University of Utah. Her most recent installation was featured at Fair, an all-women exhibition organized by Spinello Projects during Miami Art Week/Art Basel 2017.

Long inspired by the cultural diversity and beauty of Miami, the city where he spent most of his life, acclaimed Cuban American poet Richard Blanco will read from his works during an evening cruise onboard the Miami Lady. As the boat sails on Biscayne Bay under the stars, past illuminated landmarks old and new, audiences will hear a poetry that grapples with the state of the world and our place in it, and demonstrates why Miami remains an incubator for artistic talent in many fields.

An influential poet and story teller, Richard Blanco invites audiences to reconnect to the heart of human experience. Born in Madrid to Cuban exiled parents and raised in Miami, he has created a body of work characterized by the negotiation of cultural identity and place. He is the author of the award-winning memoirs The Prince of Los Cocuyos: A Miami Childhood and For All of Us, One Today: An Inaugural Poet’s Journey; the poetry chapbooks Matters of the Sea, One Today, and Boston Strong; the poetry collections Looking for the Gulf Motel, Directions to the Beach of the Dead, and City of a Hundred Fires; a children’s book of his inaugural poem, “One Today,” illustrated by Dav Pilkey; and Boundaries, a collaboration with photographer Jacob Hessler. With Ruth Behar, he is co-creator of the blog Bridges to/from Cuba: Lifting the Emotional Embargo, which provides a cultural and artistic platform for sharing the real lives and complex emotional histories of thousands of Cubans across the globe. He has been a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow and received honorary doctorates from Macalester College, Colby College, and the University of Rhode Island. He has continued to write occasional poems for organizations and events such as the re-opening of the U.S. embassy in Havana.
