Moving Lives of Kids (MLK Mural Project),and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami will lead a select group of Miami Northwestern’s AP art students to create a community mural on the bus stop located at NW 22nd Ave, at NW 56 Street in Liberty City. The painting will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2014 from 9am-4pm. The students have been working in the Education Effect Mural program at Miami Northwestern. MLK Project hosted a art contest for the artwork that would be painted on the bus shelter. The students were to come up with a design that reflects the positive aspects of the Liberty City Community. Bernisha Fleurinor, senior student in the Medical Magnet won the contest. The mural is being funded by Commissioner Audrey M. Edmondson. Each student will receive community service learning hours, as well as an educational stipend for their contribution. MLK Mural is dedicated to the healing and inspiring power of creating public art in partnership with local youth and the support of communities. Video

“I am so very proud of the young people who are working on the MLK Mural Project,” Commissioner Audrey M. Edmonson said.  “They are contributing  their talent, their love of art and their hard work and I am grateful for their participation.  The mural will be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike and will help us remember that if we are strong and united we can accomplish much to make our community a more vibrant place to live.”

“Real art empowers people and evokes thought, these young people are our future, them expressing their thoughts and inspirations is the voice of future,” Kyle Holbrook,CEO Mlk Project. “Public art has been a powerful tool essential to a strong community since community started.”

“Sir Charles T. McStuffings” is an original musical written by Playwright, Wendy White and the children residing at the Shepherd’s Way/HOPE South Florida homeless shelter. The musical will be performed by the children, and their “grown-up actor counterparts,” the New Light Players. Original art by the children will be on exhibit and a film produced by film-maker Justin Hearn will be featured, portraying the making of “Sir Charles T. McStuffings”.

“The children are all multi-talented and born to be on the stage!” states Wendy White. “My dream is to help children learn how to express themselves artistically via playwrighting, painting and music, giving them joy and hope to rise above their circumstances.”

“HOPE South Florida is a partnership, a lead organization in a network of partner churches and organizations working together to provide a holistic Christian response to homelessness in our community. The Shepherd’s Way/HOPE South Florida provides shelter and life skill classes to homeless and hurting families throughout Broward County, crossing denominational lines, Protestants and Catholics alike came together, united to serve individuals and families living on the streets.” For more information visit: https://www.hopesouthflorida.org/

The playwright and director, Wendy White has written over 125 one-act plays and is the President and co-Founder of the New Light Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit public foundation dedicated to providing cultural outreach to the community through the arts and education. This is Wendy White’s third theatrical production with the children of the Shepherd’s Way Homeless Shelter. She recently produced her original one-woman show, The Jewish Nun to sold-out audiences in Off-Broadway’s 59e59 Theatre and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 2009, the New Light Foundation, Inc. represented the United States as Art Ambassadors by the 1-2-3 Kinderlachen e.V. foundation of Rottenburg, Germany by hosting the international “Global Gallery” project (www.123kinderlachen.org). During the course of this important project, the “world’s biggest canvas” emerged; painted by children – transcending all borders and conflicts.

Wendy White would like to thank Janet Erlick, the Founder and Artistic Director of the Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theatre (FLCT) for her incredible generosity for providing the venue for our performance; the mission at FLCT is to teach the art of life through the magic of theatre. Wendy would also like to thank Vanessa Garcia, Artistic Director of Krane, Inc. for all her support in the process of developing Sir Charles T. McStuffings. In 2010, Garcia, the Founding Artistic Director of Krane, Inc. was named one of Miami’s 20 Under 40 by The Miami Herald for her work in theatre. Amy Gross uses everyday materials such as yarn, thread, beads and wire to create objects that mimic the natural world but remain wholly artificial. Her fiber and mixed media sculptures, nicknamed biotopes, reflect on the inevitability of change, attempting to counter inevitable vulnerability by stopping time. Her life forms are imitations of life. They, simply, do not die. Gross earned her BFA at The Cooper Union in New York City and worked as a surface designer, creating textiles, toys, and jewelry before before turning full time to fiber art. She lives and works in South Florida.

Beach, where most of the streets were named after French cities and architectural landmarks by the developers. In this brief performance, the artist will do her best impression of Audrey Hepburn to tell the story of why she herself has never been to Paris. She will recount the ways in which Paris and other bits of French culture have shaped her destiny without her ever having stepped foot in the great French city, including her first French kiss, her flunking out of high school French, and her obsession with the Alice B. Toklas Cookbook, written while the author and G. Stein were living in France.

Enrique Flores-Galbis shows his latest series titled “Dreaming Havana: The Collision of Memory and Fact” at the Williams McCall Gallery South of Fifth. Kicking off with an artist reception that is open to the public on Saturday, April19th at 6 pm, the exhibit will run until May 6th. KOBRAND Fine Wine and Spirits is sponsoring the event and will debut a specialty drink from its new Coco line of Alizee.

Enrique Flores-Galbis is a landscape and portrait painter. Born in Havana, Cuba, he left in 1961 with Operation Pedro Pan, arriving alone in South Florida at the age of 9. Also a novelist, his award-winning book 90 Miles to Havana was based on the events that led to his departure and the life he encountered in the U.S.

Flores-Galbis explains, “This ongoing series of paintings began before the first return to my birthplace, my magnetic center, the island of Cuba. The first images, painted from memories, were tinged by the longings and emotions that this landscape evokes in the heart of an exile. After that first visit I started painting urban themes where the collision of memory and fact is the most violent. The bare buildings of Havana, bitten by the salt and wind have the look of paper-thin, brittle honeycombs. The clanging approach of an old Ford retrofit with a sputtering Fiat engine is unsettling but another worthy subject to paint if you want to address the intersection of nostalgia, history and cold fact. These images did not come into the studio fully formed and asking to be painted. Rather, they bubbled up and then coalesced into a narrative when these messy notions and feelings were plugged into, and then shaped by the physical constraints and peculiarities of my chosen media. The alchemic process functioned as both antenna and lightning rod to focus and materialize electrical impulses– memory and fact. Although each painting presented as a surprise, they were carefully tuned to create viable narrative structures that directly communicate rather than vaguely resonate.”

Flores-Galbis received a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the Parsons School of Design in 1992. He has served on the Faculty of the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts for over twenty years and Parsons School of Design for over sixteen years as well as the Morris and Montclair Museums in New Jersey.

Flores-Galbis’ work can be found in corporate, university, and private collections throughout the country.

“Caribbean: Crossroads of the World,” opening April 18, 2014 at Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), explores the diverse cultural history of the Caribbean and its diaspora, highlighting over two centuries of rarely seen works dating from after the Haitian Revolution to the present. The exhibition is the culmination of nearly a decade of collaborative research and scholarship organized by El Museo del Barrio in conjunction with the Queens Museum and The Studio Museum in Harlem. The Miami presentation, curated for PAMM by guest curator Elvis Fuentes, is a honed reiteration of this critically-acclaimed survey and offers a vital reflection of Miami’s Caribbean community. The exhibition is the centerpiece of a season at PAMM dedicated to Caribbean art, which includes related exhibitions, a two-day symposium, a Caribbean film and video series, major new performances and other related programs and events (pamm.org/calendar).

With a magnificent and colorful spectacle that combines classical and neoclassical ballet, the Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida, conducted by Maestro Vladimir Issaev, closes its sixteenth season, next May 3rd and 4th at the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

Paying tribute to the roots, the company will present a classical Russian ballet: Paquita, with music by Minkus and choreography by Petipa. Although over the years, the original two-act play has been lost, Paquita’s wedding with her knight, has become an icon in classical ballet repertoire. Paquita allows the main couple, in this case played by dancers Jun Tanabe and Kaori Fukui, to show their virtuosity. It also has a number of variations and Pas de Trois played by soloists of the company. The costumes were made in the workshops of Mariinsky Theatre (formerly known as the Kirov) of St. Petersburg.

To complement this eclectic program, and as a tribute to Venezuela, the Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will present Fuga con Pajarillo, the orchestral version of Venezuelan composer, Aldemaro Romero’s fugue, choreographed by Vladimir Issaev. In this work the typical steps of Joropo (a folk dance) are recreated in pointe shoes, showing the technicality of the solo dancers. The costumes are a creation by designer Jorge Gallardo who, inspired in bougainvillea flower, dresses the ballerinas, while the soloist wears traditional Venezuelan Liqui-liqui.

The company will also present The Dance of the Hours from the opera La Gioconda, with music by Poncielli and choreographed by Issaev. This piece was recently premiered as part of The Opera Atelier’s Great Moments of Opera. Followed by The Encounter, also choreographed by maestro Issaev with the beautiful Albinoni’s adagio. This choreography danced by Takayuki Asai and Hill Lillian, earned him the award for best choreographer in the festival of Palm Springs, and continues to be a success every time they perform it.

Furthermore, Takayuki Asai and Lillian Hill will dance the classic Coppelia’s Pas de Deux by the composer Delibes and choreographed by Gorsky/Saint – Leon, while Jorge Barani and Meisy García will perform Paris’ Flames, a Pas de Deux with music by Asafiev and choreography by Vainonen. This Pas de Deux is performed only by exceptional dancers in high quality and strict standars international competition. It allows them to show their best technical skills.

Café Prima Pasta is celebrating their love for garlic with $4.19 specials on Saturday, April 19th in conjunction with National Garlic Day. The three “breath-taking,” garlic-infused appetizers including the Bruschetta, flaky Italian bread topped with chopped vine ripened tomatoes, sweet basil and garlic (org. $9.95); Calamaretti Fritti, fresh calamari fried in a mixture of authentic Italian bread crumbs and robust roasted garlic (orig. $12.95) and Spinach Sautee, tender baby spinach sautéed in zesty garlic served over hearty cannellini beans (orig. $9.95).

If the permeating smell of the restaurant isn’t enough to keep patrons safe, repellent vampire cocktails are available, which include the Baby Prima Martini, Dracula Red Bloody Mary, Vampire Vodka Surprise, and Chef Arturo’s favorite Pinot Noir all priced at $4.19 a glass.

Whether people love it or hate it, the health benefits of eating garlic are now universally hailed. A member of the onion family, garlic has been used throughout recorded history for both culinary and medicinal purposes such as lowering blood cholesterol levels and reducing the buildup of plaque in arteries. It has a characteristic pungent, spicy flavor that mellows and sweetens considerably with cooking.

Isaiah Mustafa, “The Old Spice Guy”, and Old Spice are going on the road across the U.S. on a “Smellcome to Manhood” tour to further Old Spice’s “scent responsibly” mission, which aims to end the overspraying epidemic once and for all.

Overspraying continues to be a major issue in the U.S. According to a recent national Old Spice survey, 90 percent of students (male and female) have been bothered by too much body spray at school. Even more revealing – 68 percent of young guys say they were not properly taught how to use body spray.

At 1:30 p.m., Old Spice will host a pop-up pep rally at the University of Miami with a live performance by the Sunsations, UM’s resident dance team, product giveaways and selfie photo opps with Mustafa.

A former wide receiver for the NFL, Mustafa gained sudden and substantial fame as the result of his Old Spice viral/TV campaigns, which garnered hundreds of millions of online hits and transformed Mustafa into a widespread sensation that culminated in an Emmy win for “Best TV Commercial.” In January 2014, Mustafa made his triumphant return as “The Old Spice Guy” for a series of digital “Internet-ventions”, designed to end the most embarrassing male mistakes.

Whether you’re a fresh face who has always wanted to get involved or an original Occupier who was there from the beginning, you won’t want to miss this! “Tjasa Ferme’s writing in this piece is nothing short of brilliant.”
-Monica Trombley, Woman Around Town

“New play Cocktales challenges sexual norms…a whirlwind of flashbacks, game shows, hypnosis, transsexual virgin videos, dancing studs and a giant vagina.”
-JoAnn DeLuna, Globosexuals

“Fantastic!!! Ferme is brilliant and mad!”
-Christopher Koulouris, scallywagandvagabond.com

“COCKTALES – Confessions of a Nymphomaniac,” is a play created by Tjasa Ferme, incubated at New York’s Chelsea district’s the cell, A Twenty First Century Salon. A two-woman farce with a three-man parade, COCKTALES follows Eve’s escape from the Garden of Eden to Dr. Truth’s TV show where she begs Dr. Truth to treat her predilection for erection. The reluctant analyst forces Eve to look her own twisted sexuality in the eye.

“COCKTALES – Confessions of a Nymphomaniac” will play Wednesday, Thursday & Saturday nights at 8:30pm (doors open at 8pm), April 9-26

The commute is one of few things in life that every single one of us experiences. It might be by car a hundred miles across the region, or a ride on the rail, or by bike or on foot or just across the house to a laptop— but we all have to get to work, and most of us spend an unfortunately large amount of time doing it. There’s a lot we can do in the long term to improve how we get around, but in the short term most of us can’t change how long it takes. So instead, we’re asking: How might we create more delightful moments during our commutes?

Join us for a community discussion and brainstorming session at Miami Light Project in Wynwood. We’ll hear from some fellow locals about their commute experiences, hear two experts share examples from other cities, and work together in small groups to create innovative ideas for making our commutes more awesome and enjoyable.

Best of all, we’re putting $3,000 on the table to make the best ideas happen (thanks to Miami Foundation and Knight Foundation).

Food, drink and excellent live music from Avocado Estate will be served.

Doors at 5:30pm. Discussion and Brainstorm 6:00pm-8:00pm.

Teatro Prometeo presents a stage reading of Volvio una Noche, a comedy written by Eduardo Rovner. A typical overprotecting mother “returns” to life to confront her son when he is about to make one of the most important decisions of his life. In the ensuing dialogues, full of humor, amply intrinsic contradictions are reflected between what is traditionally and die-hardly expected from the offspring and a prevailing dissimilar reality.

The panel discussion, entitled “The Spirit of Art in Miami,” will take place at The Artisan Lounge during the Downtown Miami First Friday Art Walk on April 4th at 7 p.m. It will be preceded by a reception starting at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Moderated by The Artisan Lounge Co-Director Giselle Delgado, an industry expert, panelists include:

o Vesna Vera, artist and resident at The Artisan Lounge

o Adriana Carvalho, artist and resident at The Artisan Lounge

o Danilo Gonzalez, artist and gallery owner of Wynwood Warehouse Project

o Abena Robinson, president elect of Dade Art Educators Association

o Jesus Manuel Rojas, art blogger and spirituality guru

Also, Artist Vesna Vera and Sculptor Adriana Carvalho will have their works featured in a joint and topically relevant exhibition. “Art has elevated Miami and its collective conscience. There’s a heightened interest in creativity, innovation and community, which can be likened to a spiritual awakening,” said Vera, who played an integral role in the development of this upcoming panel discussion. The Artisan Lounge Co-Director Giselle Delgado added, “through content-rich events like these, we hope to further establish our presence as a dynamic, progressive and innovative organization.”

On Wednesday, April 2, author Jonathan M. Katz will be in Miami to launch the new paperback edition of ‘The Big Truck That Went By: How the World Came to Save Haiti and Left Behind a Disaster’ with a reading at Books & Books in Coral Gables.

Published to glowing reviews and winner of multiple awards, ‘The Big Truck That Went By’ is a crucial, timely look at a signal failure of international aid. Katz was the only full-time American news correspondent in Haiti on January 12, 2010, when the deadliest earthquake in the history of the Western Hemisphere struck the island nation. More than half of American adults gave money for Haiti, part of a global response totaling $16.3 billion in pledges. But four years later the effort has foundered. Its most important promises-to rebuild safer cities, alleviate severe poverty, and strengthen Haiti to face future disasters-remain unfulfilled. How did so much generosity amount to so little? What went wrong? In what a Miami Herald Op-Ed called “the most important written work to emerge from the rubble,” Katz follows the money to uncover startling truths about how good intentions go wrong, and what can be done to make aid “smarter.” Reporting alongside Bill Clinton, Wyclef Jean, Sean Penn, and Haiti’s leaders and people, ‘The Big Truck That Went By’ is a complex, darkly funny, and unexpected portrait of one of the world’s most fascinating countries.

Facade: Historic Downtown Miami in Line Drawings, by author Damir Sinovcic, is a portrait of the architecture and development of Miami’s city center and its vicinity during the early twentieth century. Though many buildings erected during that period have been demolished or significantly altered over time, some of the most prominent structures still remain. Based on the book, the Miami Center for Architecture and Design, along with the Downtown Development Authority and author Damir Sinovcic, have created an exhibition that depicts many of Miami’s historical buildings. Free viewing Monday thru Friday, 10am – 5pm.

“Facade: Historic Downtown Miami in Line Drawings features downtown Miami buildings erected around the time of the Miami Land Boom. The book’s geographical focus encompasses the city center and neighborhoods north and east of the Miami River, as well as certain buildings north of the central business district, including Overtown and the neighborhoods near Biscayne Boulevard….

Over time, and often in the name of progress, many of Miami’s early twentieth century buildings have been demolished. Although this book could easily have been dedicated to all the great buildings that no longer exist, it celebrates those important structures that have endured.” – Damir Sinovcic, Author

“The Unfinished Black Civil Rights Agenda -Gaining the full rights of US Citizenship for ALL Black Americans (Where Do We Go From Here and Post-Obama?)”.

In her 2013 article, “Trayvon Martin, Race, and Anthropology,” Dr. Leith Mullings (President, American Anthropological Association) spoke out, stepped up to, and challenged, conventional wisdom regarding “diversity.” “Diversity,” wrote Mullings, “has become a threadbare term used… to refer to almost any type of variation…[while] admirable…[diversity, expanded, fails] to address the historical injustices of racial exclusion…[and] obscures the systemic character of racism in the United States. All forms of discrimination are lamentable, but they are not equal, nor even necessarily comparable, [they]…require different interventions.” By 2015, our nation will have commemorated several of those key, momentous, interventions targeting extant anti-Black/pro-White racist world-views, laws, systems, beliefs, attitudes, customs, and practices. To date, Civil Rights laws throughout south Florida, and across our nation, have failed (i) to end White privilege, (ii) to abolish, what the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. called, the “Disease of Racism,” and (iii) to close the resulting disparities lived by diverse Black men, women, and children through Euro-centric Educational, Medical, Military and Prison Industrial Complexes. Even with President Barak Obama in the White House! Accordingly, for Dr. Mary Francis Berry (Longtime Former Chairwoman, the United States Commission on Civil Rights), and despite the frenzy over diversity, “The crux of the problem today is there is no [Black] civil rights movement…[because] President Obama is the prize in the minds of most people…at the end of the struggle… [He] was our payoff…” She added, “There will be a [re-vitalized] civil rights movement when Obama is no longer president….and…the problems that Black people have are still here…”

The popular North Beach Bandshell concert series hosted by the non-profit Community Arts and Culture organization plans its next outing Saturday, April 12, 2014, beginning at 6 p.m., and this time featuring the emerging Cuban singer / songwriter Danay Suárez. Local “afro-galactic / psychedelic” jam sextet the Nag Champayons will perform in support, as well as the Miami chapter of the School of Rock plus guest DJ Ephniko Dialecto.

Suárez, originally from La Habana, Cuba, has been generating a buzz throughout Latin America and Europe with her soulful voice, razor-sharp lyrics and innovative musical style. Performing since the age of 15, Danay formed part of the Havana Cultura series, collaborating with various artists throughout the years. She has performed in European cities such as London, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin and Istanbul, and in Latin America, Mexico, Panama and Colombia. In addition, the singer / songwriter released her first album Polvo de la Humedad in 2008, which was followed by her Havana Cultura EP in 2010.

The Nag Champayons are a largely improvisational collection of musicians drawing inspiration from African, Caribbean, hip-hop, rock and jazz influences. The band released a self-titled EP in 2012 that features the single “183rd Street Flea Market” with guest vocalist Itagui from Locos Por Juana. The Nags hold a floating residence at the visually ethereal Hollywood, FL venue Mystic Water Kava Bar called Psychedelic Jazz Practice. The group is currently working on their next release which will feature the beat box and rap stylings of Komakozie and the Afro-Cuban inspired vocals of Tomas Diaz from the Spam Allstars.

Ephniko Dialecto is a bilingual songwriter, DJ and emcee originally from Columbia and now residing in Miami. His style has been compared to Mos Def, the Orishas and Damian Marley. A self-described “hip-hop educator/researcher”, he does workshops with youth programs at area festivals, juvenile detention centers and schools.

The School of Rock Miami is a youth program that teaches music and team-building in a band setting; they will be sending their house band to open the event.

Celebrating Everyday Women With Extraordinary Courage” Theme For Annual Vanessa Baez Memorial Women’s Brunch
The Official Closing Event Of Spoken Soul Festival

Amy Baez organized the first Vanessa Baez Memorial Women’s Brunch in 2004 to celebrate the life and courage of her late sister Vanessa Baez. Vanessa’s ability to remain strong while battling sarcoidosis continues to inspire others today, bringing together everyday women who exhibit extraordinary spirit in the face of adversity. Since the first brunch, VBMWB has become an annual, one-of-a-kind event that offers a day of inspiration, sisterhood, love, and laughter. The Brunch features a live auction, raffle prizes, guest speaker, guest artist, and complimentary swag bags. In honor of this year’s guest speaker Tanya Villanueva Tepper and guest artist Amy Estrela, proceeds of the event will benefit two local organizations that provide arts programs benefitting children with autism. Tepper, who is raising two autistic daughters, is a writer, national speaker, and founding member of the organization, Fiancés and Domestic Partners of 9/11. She appeared in the Peabody Award-winning documentary Project Rebirth and is living proof that tragedy can be transformed into triumph. Amy Estrela of Amy & Jacob Paint has witnessed firsthand how art can positively impact the life of an autistic child, as it has done for her son Jacob. VBMWB is also the official closing event of the Spoken Soul Festival, which supports local women artists.
RSVP and advance ticket purchase is required at Spoken Soul Festival website.

Soiree to Celebrate Local Award-Winning Film’s Release and International Success

“HazMat”, the Miami-made film that garnered international notoriety in the film festival circuit, celebrates its official release, Tuesday, April 1 from 8 pm – 10 pm at Tarpon Bend Coral Gables, located at 65 Miracle Mile. Winner of “Best Horror Film” at the Berlin Independent Film Festival and Massachusetts Independent Film Festival, “HazMat”, is now available to the public, and its team is ready to indulge in a few libations and delve into a Q & A with horror fans and local film supporters.

April Fool’s Day seems befitting to fête “HazMat”, whose plot revolves around a practical joke gone terribly wrong. For the special event, Tarpon Bend will offer two-for-one-drinks and have their full menu available for those wishing a nosh. “This is a great opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate a film that has represented Miami around the globe. As a filmmaker, one of my main goals has been to exemplify the diversity that this town has shown me”, says writer, producer and director, Lou Simon of White Lotus Productions. The lovely mix of local actors has recently amassed national recognition with lead actors, Norbert Velez and Aniela McGuiness, receiving “Best Actor” and “Best Actress” nominations at Chicago’s Indie Horror Film Festival.

Deemed a “triple threat”, Ms. Simon will also formally announce casting choices for her next feature film, “Agoraphobia”, a supernatural/psychological thriller that will have audiences at the edge of their seat. The Cuban-American filmmaker scouted several locations for “Agoraphobia”, including L.A. and Key West, but ultimately selected the Magic City once again. Currently in pre-production, the film is slated to begin shooting in Miami, June 2014.

“HazMat” is now available for digital download or rent on: Xfinity Comcast, scroll to “HORROR” and select “HazMat SD”; iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/movie/hazmat/id813357180;

Get ready to dance your pants off!!! the Hongs live at Will Call – Friday, March 28th.

Formed in 2008 by Jamaican-born musician Gordon Myers this multinational rock electronic group has become one of the most popular bands of the Miami music scene.

Quite accidentally, The Hongs band members are a multinational fusion: Jamaican, French, Mexican, Jewish, Costa Rican, Scottish, Cuban & Argentinean.

The Hongs blend elements of electro-pop with a dash of nuwave to create a sweet sugary pop-rock-disco. Spreading the dance / rock / house / electro hybrid one toe at a time…
“There is something very delicate and ephemeral about the Hongs. Their music sounds like something that reverberates in hallways in those moments before sleep hits.”

HistoryMiami’s newest exhibition, featuring Miami-inspired murals by Miami-based artists, is now open to the public.

Called Some Like It Hot, the exhibition is the first major museum/gallery showcase of Miami’s burgeoning street art scene, and was curated in collaboration with some of the art forms’ local pioneers and trailblazers: 2alas, Lo Castro, Tati Suarez, Erin Odea and the MSG Crew to name a few. Each contributed original works for the exhibit, inspired by Miami’s history.

Street art in has recently exploded in popularity and is now a definitive part of the cultural fabric in today’s Miami. The murals and outdoor pieces that dot the Wynwood/Midtown area have become major attractions for both tourists and locals alike, and have helped revitalize a once forgotten neighborhood. However, the impact the art form, and the nameless artists creating it (largely for free) have yet to be recognized by major galleries and museums in the area…until now.

General museum admission is free for HistoryMiami members and children under 6. Admission for adults is $8, seniors and students are $7 and $5 for children 6 – 12 years old.

Their name says it all – Masters At Work.
For over 20 years “Little Louie” Vega and Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez have pioneered a journey through house – defiantly melding elements of hip-hop, disco, jazz and funk to amass an overwhelming body of dynamic and universally celebrated work. In the process, the two native New Yorkers have established themselves as iconoclastic producers, remixers and musical visionaries, purveying a sound and rhythm that has moved dance music enthusiasts across the globe.

On Wednesday, March 26th, 2014 set sail with the Masters at Work aboard the exquisite Lady Windridge Yacht in Miami for what is sure to be one of the most exclusive gatherings of the Winter Music Conference. Set aboard a luxury yacht, the first ever ‘Masters At Work at Sea’ will cruise along spectacular Miami waterways from 5pm – 9pm and feature a complimentary bar and 5-star catering. Join us for an unforgettable musical experience curated by Louie Vega and Kenny Dope, and co-produced by Carmel Ophir (The Vagabond, Creations) against the backdrop of a majestic Miami sunset.
