o “Hello World” (France), set in a collage forest crafted out of newspaper, plants, and paper maché, in which a newborn owl wakes up and explores the complicated world around him.

o “The Lovely Letter L” (U.S.), an infectious musical short about lemons, light bulbs, laundry and lots more.

o “The New Species” (Czech Republic), in which three friends discover a mysterious bone and set out to discover the creature it belonged to.
o “Big Block Sing-Song: Hair” (Canada), an electronic pop tune about the stuff that grows out of your head.
o “Monstersymfonie” (Germany), featuring a band of four monsters, one girl, and some very silly instruments who are definitely playing past their bedtime.

• 6:30 p.m. – Opening Night Reception and Film Screening

Florida Premiere
o Humorously bug-eyed animated insects battle it out against lush live action backgrounds in this enormously inventive comic adventure from award-winning French animators. The unique combination of real life landscapes – a micro-world shot in extreme and stunning close-up – and wonderfully animated creepy-crawlies engaging in playful antics, will leave the viewer both dazzled and amused.

Saturday, October 18, 2014

• 10 a.m. – Film Screening: “Boy and the World” (Brazil, Ages 5+)

His cozy world is shattered when his father leaves for the city, prompting him to embark on a quest to reunite his family.

• 11 a.m. – 3p.m. – Workshop I: Stop Motion Animation for Kids at Coral Gables Museum

o “Carpark” (U.K.) where a simple shopping trip goes horribly wrong.

o “The Big Beast” (France), in which a legend says that a huge beast will come to eat you when you least expect it.

o “The Princess, the Prince and the Green-Eyed Dragon” (Germany) featuring a selfish Prince and Princess and a helpful dragon, and in the end, they each get what they deserve.

o “Portlandia: Rat’s” (U.S.) the story of a trio of hipster rodents who are tired of the way rats are always getting slandered by humans.

• 2:15 p.m. – “Minuscule: valley of the Lost Ants” (France, Ages 5+), encore screening
o See Opening Night for full description.

• 4:30 p.m. – Film Screening: “Selkirk, the Real Robinson Crusoe” (Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Ages 9+)
U.S. Premiere

o Selkirk, an unruly, selfish privateer, is the sailing master of the Esperanza, an English galley sailing the South Seas in search of treasures. In the absence of enemy boats, the privateers pass the time gambling and loafing off. Before long, Selkirk has squandered his current and future savings and alienated the entire crew, especially Captain Bullock, who decides to maroon him on an uninhabited island. The beautifully hand-crafted stop motion animation has a distinct feel that gives the film character. In an attempt to tell kids the “true story” of the famous castaway Robinson Crusoe, the film is a perfect blend of whimsy and action.
o Q&A with director Walter Tournier immediately following the premiere.

• 7 p.m. – Film Screening: “Starry Starry Night” (Taiwan, Ages 9+)
Florida Premiere

o Starry Starry Night is the imaginative, whimsical and emotionally resonant coming-of-age story of Mei, a day-dreamy seventh-grader whose life seems to be falling apart around her and Jay who avoids contact with his new schoolmates and becomes an instant target for their derision and taunting. Based on the graphic novel by Taiwanese writer Jimmy Liao, Starry Starry Night is a charming and honest portrayal of all the wonderful, life-changing, sometimes-painful events that can happen when you’re 13 and finding your place in the world.

Sunday, October 19, 2014

• 10 a.m. – Kids Mix: Shorts for Tots (Ages 3+), Encore screening

o See Friday for full description.

• 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. – Workshop II: Stop Motion Animation for teens at Coral Gables Museum

o For ages 13 to 18, students will learn basic principles of stop-motion animation with a focus on printed materials, watch short films with a variety of stop-motion techniques and then create their own content for short films. The final product will be delivered in an electronic file to every student for them to keep and shared on the Gables Cinema website and social media platforms.
o $20 material and equipment fee

• 11:30 a.m. – Film Screening: “Aunt Hilda!” (France, Ages 9+)
Florida Premiere

o Jacques-Remy Girerd, creator of “A Cat in Paris” and “Mia and the Migoo” returns to the Gables Cinema with his latest hand-drawn gem. Hilda lives high above the city, happily at home with tens of thousands of rare and luscious plants in her palace of a greenhouse. But down below, a new, genetically modified super-grain threatens to disrupt the delicate natural harmony. The film’s not-so-subtle eco-message builds to a suitably cataclysmic, technology-gone-haywire finale, as the destructive power of the Frankenplant is unleashed and Hilda must help the Earth save itself from a very colorful biological mayhem.

• 11:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. – Festival Fair in Cinema’s Perrin Plaza
o Featuring face painting, The Miami Balloon Guy, temporary tattoos, live music from Latin Grammy Nominee Rita Rosa Ruesga and treats
o Free

• 2 p.m. – Film Screening: “Nocturna” (France, Ages 5+)
Florida Premiere

o Visually stunning and wildly inventive, “Nocturna” explores the mystery of the night in a sweeping adventure full of Alice in Wonderland-like characters and moody, dream-inspired landscapes. After an unusual discovery on the rooftop of his orphanage, a young boy named Tim plunges into the secret world of Nocturna, a city inhabited by curious creatures who control the night. There are hairdressers who specialize in bed-heads, dream writers, and a vast herd of guardian cats led by the gigantic Cat Shepherd. Yet Nocturna is in danger: the stars in the sky are disappearing, kids are becoming restless at night, and a mysterious shadow creature is haunting the empty streets, extinguishing anything that gives off light. If Tim and the Cat Shepherd can’t set things right, nighttime will never be the same. In the end, Tim and the audience ultimately learn that the night doesn’t have to be so scary after all!
o Q&A with director Victor Maldonado immediately following the premiere.

• 4:30 p.m. – Film Screening: “Animation Celebration: John Hubley” (U.S., Ages 8+)
South Florida Premiere

o This program features films from legendary animators John and Faith Hubley who were ousted from the famed Disney animation team during a writer’s strike after working on films such as “Bambi,” “Dumbo” and “Pinocchio.” These new restorations on 35mm prints are a celebration of John Hubley’s 100th birthday and the inventive work the pair did after leaving Hollywood. The visually striking, playful and innovative short films address a wide range of topics – from the plight of the modern day farmer to two boys’ search for a pet bird – and feature the voices of jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie, English actor Dudley Moore, and the Hubley’s children.

• 6:15 p.m. – Film Screening: “Mother, I Love You” (Latvia, Ages 9+)
Florida Premiere

o Winner of top prizes at the Berlin and Los Angeles Film Festivals, Janis Nords’ instantly engaging second feature combines coming-of-age drama with slow-burn thriller to tell the story of a boy who is unable to extricate himself from a growing web of lies. The film’s portrait of preteen rebelliousness has been compared to Truffaut’s iconic “The 400 Blows” and the Dardennes’ “The Kid with a Bike.” But no degree in cinema studies is required to enjoy this captivating and emotionally profound film. Film contains some mature subject matter.

Custom bike manufacturer Republic Bike is calling all kids for a mini kiddie concert ft. local musician Raffa Jo Harris! Republic Bike will take over the Wynwood Walls to celebrate the launch of their limited edition Republic Kids Cargo Bike. Come on out this Sunday afternoon from 3pm to 5pm to groove to the tunes of Raffa Jo Harris while testing out the new kids bikes and enjoying the refreshing taste of Perrier.

The Kids Bikes: Inspired by classic, three-wheeled cargo bikes, the highlight of this adorable, design-conscious ride is the front wooden crate, perfect for hauling beginner typography books, Pantone/Crayola conversion charts, or even little puppy Gehry (little sister definitely not recommended). Traditionally used for transporting more prosaic loads, the adult version of this inverted tricycle of sorts is commonly seen throughout the streets of cycle happy Europe toting everything from baguettes to kinderen. Republic Bike shrink-rayed this design to offer precocious American children a chic, yet practical starter bicycle alternative.

Emerge Miami’s 100th Bike Ride: Celebrate Diversity Miami, will be rolling through local communities on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014, giving people a unique opportunity to learn more about several of our culturally diverse neighborhoods, and to connect with fellow greater Miami residents in a fun and interactive way.

More than 100 cyclists are expected to attend this family-friendly event that will be kicking off Celebrate Diversity Miami, a new large-scale community engagement initiative that aims to promote a deepened sense of connectivity between the culturally and ethnically diverse communities of greater Miami. The group, departing from Government Center in downtown Miami, will visit Overtown, Liberty City, and Little Haiti before concluding with a celebratory picnic at the beautiful, waterfront Museum Park, which recently opened up to the public this summer.

Along the way, riders will first stop by Overtown’s Dorsey Park, where URGENT, Inc. has been working on several mural projects documenting the rich history of that community. The second stop is at the MCI KaBoom Playground in Liberty City, where the Miami Children’s Initiative has been taking a block-by-block approach to breaking the cycle of poverty by investing in the potential of every child. Then riders will make a third stop in Little Haiti to experience the Little Haiti Cultural Center’s recently opened Caribbean Marketplace, an entertainment venue for showcasing arts & crafts, culture, and food. Finally, everyone will make their way over to Museum Park, and come together to celebrate Emerge Miami’s 100th ride milestone.

Emerge Miami and Celebrate Diversity Miami are proud to have the enthusiastic support of the Urban Renewal Greater Enhancement National Team (URGENT), Inc., Miami Children’s Initiative (MCI), and Little Haiti Cultural Center.

South Beach Vision’s Grand Opening: The Eye of the Beer Holder

South Beach Vision has opened its doors in the luxurious Waverly Condominium building, overlooking Biscayne Bay. If you care about quality and value customer service, we have you in our sights. That’s why our motto is “Focused On You”, a unique concept in today’s healthcare environment. We offer complimentary valet parking, beer, wine, and espresso to our patients. Our medical director, Dr. Adam L. Stelzer, has been recognized as a premiere eye doctor in the State of Florida and is the only American Board of Optometry nationally board certified optometrist in Miami Beach. He was voted “Young Optometrist of the Year” by his colleagues in 2012. Experience a concierge-style eye examination and find something special in our exquisite spectacle and sunglass collection. Interested in contact lenses or a LASIK consultation? Those are two of our specialties. We are open late and on Saturdays.

We also believe in charity and giving back to our community. Dr. Stelzer has a long history with The Miami Lighthouse for the Blind. Their dedication to the visually impaired is unparalleled and is a model for charitable organizations across the nation. South Beach Vision will be selling custom engraved wine glasses and beer pints with all profit donated to the Miami Lighthouse. We are Focused On You…and our less fortunate.

We created a space where you can relax before and after your exam. We are tired of seeing patients given a number and told to wait in line for far too long. This is a revolutionary twist on the common doctor’s office and we take pride in serving each of our unique patients. We strive to create an unforgettably warm experience, from the atmosphere of the office the moment you walk in, throughout the entire exam, and even while choosing the next addition to your collection of eyewear.

Come discover South Beach Vision.

SUSHISAMBA Coral Gables and Coral Gables Art Cinema are transporting guests to Brazil with the premiere of The Skeleton Twins

In this sharply observed dark comedy, Saturday Night Live veterans Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids) and Bill Hader (Adventureland), play twins estranged for over a decade, that reunite after Hader attempts suicide. His turn at recovery in their childhood home where Wiig still lives in upstate New York sets off a series of revelations and reappraisals of their lives, and of those around them – their fractured and neurotic families, lovers, ex-lovers, and more. The Skeleton Twins is at turns comic and poignant, featuring career-defining dramatic roles for these two great comedians.

SUSHISAMBA Coral Gables’ Executive Chef David Sears will create a themed menu inspired by Coral Gables Art Cinema’s feature film every month as part of this new collaborative series: SAMBA & A MOVIE. Guests can book reservations before or after showtime to enjoy a 3-course prix-fixe dinner (movie ticket included) for only $39.

Be prepared to swing to the incredible sax and clarinet playing of Jowee Omicil at the release of his latest CD, “Naked,” at Arts Garage in Delray Beach. Start time is 8 PM. Accompanying Jowee will be Jeff Deen, tabla, halo; Michael Piolet, drums; Ti West, tambour; Carlos Alabaci, bass; and Harold St-Louis- keys/piano

More than a mere player, Jowee is a unique and prolific composer, producer, arranger, vocalist, band leader, and music instructor who has devoted much of his time to passing down his broad knowledge of musicology to students of all ages. On May 18, 2010, Jowee had the honor of being invited to President Barack Obama’s White House to play his music for its inaugural observation of Haitian Flag Day before 150 VIP guests. With his latest release, “Naked”, Jowee offers a work that is steeped in purpose yet listener-friendly and accessible to all. In essence, that is the only way he knows to approach the making of his music.

Says Jowee: “NAKED was recorded at the Riviera area stage theater with the bare minimum. The nakedness invites the listener to participate. I see it as a jazz orgy, where everybody join in. Going forward, setting up your own standards it’s a call and response to my musical ancestors Fela Kuti, Coltrane, Dibango, Toussaint Louverture, Jean Baptiste DuSable, Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, Pharoah Sanders, Kenny Garrett, Branford Marsalis, Kirk Franklin, Kathleen Battle, Luciano Pavarotti …what does that do to the listeners? It invites them to add their grain of salt and join the musical Fest. While listening to NAKED the people will want to jam with the record. This is the purpose of being NAKED musically.”

It’s the continuation of his previous album, “Roots & Grooves,” which was naked too. Jowee is opening a dialogue with music lovers by releasing this Album. “I’m very satisfied with the outcome of this project. May the world face my nakedness,” he says. There is a Gospel medley, performed as a duet with Harold St-Louis, dedicated to his Dad which brings Jowee to his church roots. Ti West on congas/tambour is a master of roots folklore rhythms in Haiti. He’s featured vocally and instrumentally. The eclectic sound of the halo, hapi and the tabla are all played by Jeffrey Deen, who’s an Indian-rooted musician whose performances provide joy to listeners. James Quinlan on bass, Michael Piolet on drums, and Carlos Alabaci round out the personnel, all of whom were under 20 at the time. Jowee loves to promote the younger generation who will be and who are becoming the leaders of today’s scene.

Jowee’s music is steeped in the spirituality set forth by his minister father. “I had the honor of producing music on the very last recording of Haiti’s great Pepe Bayard,” Jowee reflects. “He was dying while we were making that record, but immersing himself in music helped him live a whole lot longer. That’s the power of music… and that’s what I want to bring back. I also want people to DANCE to jazz again. Jazz was once popular music and I want the world to groove once again.”

During the performance, artist Lou-Lou Davila-Hagopian will “paint to music,” with the finished product on display at the conclusion of the performance.

“This young man is a very talented and gifted musician, always in the lab working on his songs and practicing his instrument. He is a person we will be hearing in the future. Keep your ears and eyes open.”
–Kenny Garrett, Musician

THE TRANSFORMATION:
It began in 2011 when OLCDC was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) “Our Town” Grant to create dynamic public art and engaging spaces to replace street barricades in the city’s most notorious neighborhood. OLCDC partnered with Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places to administer a call to artists, soliciting more than 200 responses from around the world. In Summer 2012, four artists/teams—Gale Fulton Ross, R & R Studios, Jennifer Bonner & Christian Stayner, and Walter Hood—were selected to begin work throughout the City of Opa-locka. They joined forces with renowned urban planners, landscape architects and project developers to implement the public art component of the redevelopment of Opa-locka, particularly in the Magnolia North neighborhood. Since then, the arts have been infused throughout the OLCDC’s revitalization efforts, from housing to infrastructure development to education and more.

ABOUT OPA-LOCKA COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (OLCDC):
The Opa-locka Community Development Corporation (OLCDC) was established in November 1980 as a non-profit community development corporation in order to address the distressed unemployment conditions, particularly in the Opa-locka and North Dade County, Florida, communities. Its primary mission is to transform neighborhoods by capitalizing on community assets, empowering residents and creating community and economic initiatives that serve as a catalyst in promoting sustainable development. For more information about OLCDC, please visit www.olcdc.org.

This program of music for percussion and electronics is centered around Christopher Cerrone’s 22-minute work Memory Palace. Scored for found and homemade percussion instruments ranging from tuned beer bottles to 17 planks of wood and accompanied by field recordings made by the composer, Memory Palace is a beautiful exploration of the sonic possibilities of percussion. The program also includes Celestial Sphere, a work for live marimba and pre-recorded marimbas written for me last year by David Crowell, Simple Songs of Birth and Return for mbira and electronics by Nathan Davis, 21 for marimba and electronics and Stop Speaking for snare drum and electronics, both by Andy Akiho and the world premiere of House Music by Juraj Kojs.

Praised for his “excellent” and “precisely attuned” performances by the New York Times, percussionist Ian David Rosenbaum has developed a musical breadth far beyond his years. He made his Kennedy Center debut in 2009 and later that year garnered a special prize created for him at the Salzburg International Marimba Competition. Last season, Mr. Rosenbaum joined the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s CMS Two program as only the second percussionist they have selected in their history. He has recorded for the Bridge, Innova and Naxos labels and is on the faculty of the Dwight School in Manhattan. For more information, please visit iandavidrosenbaum.com.

This October #MiamiCarnivalTurns30. To celebrate this milestone, the Miami Broward Carnival Committee Inc. has partnered with Pèrez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) to host a Carnival inspired kick-off event at the musuem(1103 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, FL 33130) to open the 2014 Miami Broward Carnival season. The event will feature a steel band performance, masquerade costume design workshop, and more on Thursday, October 2nd from 6:00pm-9:00pm. Models in traditional Caribbean style masquerade attire will greet guests as they enjoy the mesmerizing steel band music playing in the background. Guests will also be able to view Beatriz Milhazes: Jardim Botânico exhibit, the first major U.S. retrospective on Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes, whose large-scale abstract paintings were inspired by the decorations of Carnival. One of #Miami Broward Carnival’s own masquerade bands will be leading the workshop on the history and design of traditional masquerade costumes.

South Florida’s diverse cultural makeup has allowed it to be a stage for showcasing and celebrating the unique traditions of its residents. The Miami Broward Carnival is one of the area’s largest annual events, drawing upwards of 30,000 participants and spectators each year.

“Serving Miami’s Caribbean community is part of PAMM’s core mission”, said PAMM Director Thom Collins. “We’re thrilled to be a part of the Miami Broward Carnival festivities this year and hope that our partnership will encourage even more members of Miami’s Caribbean community to visit the museum.” Works by Caribbean artists are on view throughout the museum as part of the permanent collection installations, and a solo show by Haitian-born, Miami-based Adler Guerrier is also currently on view. Prior to Beatriz Milhazes:  Jardim Botânico opening, the museum presented a major group show of works by Caribbean artists and hosted a kick-off for Caribbean American Heritage Month, a Caribbean video and film series, and a symposium relating to Caribbean art.

Miami Broward Carnival Chair Joan Hinkson addressed the new event saying, “Partnering with PAMM is the perfect way to celebrate 30 years of Miami Carnival as Miami Broward Carnival continues growing and sharing the exciting traditions of Caribbean culture with a larger, more diverse audience.”

About Pèrez Art Museum Miami
Pérez Art Museum Miami was originally founded as the Center for Fine Arts, and was strictly an exhibiting organization with no collection of its own. In 1996 the museum was renamed Miami Art Museum and dedicated itself to collecting and exhibiting international art of the 20th and 21st centuries with a special emphasis on art of the Americas. Since then, the collection has grown steadily across a range of media. The new Pérez Art Museum Miami in downtown Miami’s Museum Park strengthens the Museum’s role as a vital cultural and educational center. Opened as Pérez Art Museum Miami in recognition of a landmark gift of cash and art from Jorge M. Pérez —now valued at $40 million—the museum serves as a resource commensurate with Miami’s thriving community of artists, designers, collectors and arts-engaged public.

About Miami Broward Carnival
Held every year as a way to celebrate and share the Caribbean culture, the Miami Broward Carnival is heralded as one of South Florida’s top festivals, fostering community pride and civic involvement, and providing critical opportunities to the Caribbean people in South Florida to promote cultural exchange and build economic cooperation in the multi-cultural environment that is Miami. The Miami Broward Carnival will be held on October 12, 2014, at the Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition, Inc. featuring the rich, bold and colorful costumes of the over 20 masquerade bands, the iconic parade, and a concert. Miami Broward Carnival has cultivated a significant niche of Caribbean cultural heritage within South Florida for the past 30 years. MiamiBrowardCarnival.com and hash tag #MiamiCarnivalTurns30

Ayurveda is the Indian traditional holistic approach to life and health. It roots back more than 5,000 years and is believed by many to be the oldest and more comprehensive health and wellness care system. The central concept of Ayurveda is the theory that health exists when there is a balance between three fundamental bodily humors or doshas called Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Every part of us is governed by these three doshas. Skin is no exception. Many skin conditions are thought to be caused by a dosha imbalance. If you know your skin dosha and which dosha is imbalanced, it will be easier to treat any skin conditions you have.

In this workshop, I will teach you the techniques to find out your skin dosha and help you detect any imbalances you may have. I can also help you simply maintain the health of your skin. I will then show you how to correct your skin issues with the help of Ayurvedic herbs and oils, diet, and lifestyle choices.
At the end of the workshop, all students will be able to make their own beauty products based on their skin type & challenges.

In this workshop you will:
1. Learn about the doshas and find out your dosha skin type
2. Learn the 7 beauty steps for healthy skin taught by Ayurveda
3. Learn to align your diet and lifestyle to your skin dosha or imbalances
4. Design your own dinacharya (daily routine) to enhance the health of your skin
5. Learn about the top Ayurvedic herbs for skincare, along with their uses and benefits
6. Formulate and take home authentic Ayurvedic skincare kit based on your dosha (1 herbal face pack, 1 scrub, and 1 cleanser)

Make your own Face & Body Moisturizing Cream

Over time, the sun and hot weather of Florida can really damage your skin, causing premature aging and wrinkles, along with dryness and burns. Skin needs to be nourished and moisturized. In this workshop you will learn to make your own cream to protect, restore, and heal your skin. Too many commercial creams and cosmetics have questionable or even toxic ingredients. When you make the cream yourself, you have clarity and confidence about what ingredients to use.

I will teach you about the benefits of ingredients used in formulating creams from hydrosols and oils to butters. We will go over the different techniques used to make creams (from heavy and deeply moisturizing to light, non-greasy and fast absorbing creams) with or without preservatives. Most importantly, you will get the confidence to make your own creams at home.

In this workshop you will:

1. Learn to treat specific skin issues, such as scars and wrinkles
2. Effectively use herbs in creams using tinctures & hydrosols
3. Learn to make anhydrous body creams (no water)
4. Learn to make creams without any emulsifiers
5. Learn about emulsifiers and emulsifying techniques
6. Learn the properties and benefits of oils, butters, & hydrosols
7. Learn to make water decoctions and medicinally infused oils
8. Make and take home: 1 body moisturizing cream adapted to your skin type and 1 make up remover lotion

The exhibition, MUSES: A Point of Departure features the creative tangents and masterfully inspired works of four artists: Vicente Fabre, Mila Hajjar, Maura Leonardo and MANO explore and share their inspiration, the process and the work in a collaborative group exhibition.

Robin Korth Talks Soul on the Run and How We Can Start Again to Live Our Lives At Any Age

It really sucks to come in second in your own life. It sucks even more to think this is okay.
When God knocks, it isn’t such a great idea to keep saying, “Wait a minute.”
“Change” is a word that does its best work wearing a sweat suit.

Miami native Robin Korth will debut her book Soul on the Run, Saturday September 20, 7:00 pm, at Books & Books in Coral Gables.

Soul on the Run is the gut-wrenchingly honest portrayal of one woman’s search for herself, and her refusal to continue playing the game of “let’s pretend everything is okay.” What’s more, it reminds us—when we are honest with ourselves—we can start life over at any age. Korth’s words are pithy and raw, sometimes almost brutal, and often just plain funny. There are common sense insights into doing life and a sometimes mystic questing into the hidden avenues of the human heart. To read this book is to journey into your own heart and spirit. The questions and comments of this woman’s piercing search for joy and meaning will spark your own. You cannot read this book without becoming a participant in your own soul’s journey towards life.

Breast cancer is manageable and preventable. The key is early detection. However, studies have shown that minority women in Miami-Dade are less likely to seek preventative breast health care.

The Mammography Art Initiative (MAI) was established at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at FIU in 2011 to address the need for better access to affordable breast health services and breast health education for underserved women in Miami. Through the fundraising efforts of the previous two years’ art shows, we have been able to raise over $50,000 in funds and services to sponsor mammograms and follow up care for hundreds of women all over Miami-Dade County.

The MAI has been inundated with support from local artist and the healthcare community. We are continually expanding our program and hope to close this health disparity gap in the near future.

In a continuous effort to bring to South Florida the most iconic ballets of the Russian repertoire, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida presents a Tribute to Diaghilev, the art critic, patron, ballet impresario and founder of the Ballets Russes, with three splendid works that translate the spirit of the era.
Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida joins the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Stravinsky’s controversial piece The Rite of Spring, with a new version choreographed by the company’s Artistic Director, Vladimir Issaev and performed by their magnificent dancers. The production utilizes diverse and unique special effects as moving projections by DMD Studios, with costumes decorated by artist Maria Rivas.
The program also includes Le Spectre de la Rose, a beautiful short ballet about a young woman who dreams of dancing with the spirit of a souvenir rose from her first ball, based on a poem by Théophile Gautier. The dances were designed by Michel Fokine and the music is Hector Berlioz’s 1841 orchestration of Carl Maria von Weber’s piano music called “Invitation to the Dance”. Léon Bakst designed the original sets and costumes, which are the basis for Arts Ballet’s designs that have already been recreated at the ateliers of the Mariinsky Theater in Russia.
Finally, the show includes the ballet Petrouchka. Audiences will enjoy this very unique production with music of Stravinsky, costume designs by Jorge Gallardo, and choreography by Issaev himself. The Ballet in one act is set in the middle of a Russian Fair and tells the story of three puppets: Petrouchka, the clown, the Ballerina and, the Moor. All three puppets are commanded by the Charlatan, a sinister, bearded puppeteer and magician, who gives the puppets human emotions.
With this programs Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will introduce dancers Hirofumi Ikeuchi y Saori Morioka y Takayuki Asai and Lilian Hill performing the leading roles, accompanied by local and international dancers.

PowerFit Studios and JEMKIDS Acknowledge National Childhood Obesity Month With Fitness Event

Miami, Fl-September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month recognizes the serious threat obesity poses to the health of America’s children and decreasing its prevalence in the United States. PowerFit Studios and JEMKIDS are encouraging young people to make a commitment to their health and wipe out America’s obesity epidemic. They will host a family inspired fitness event on Saturday, September 27, 2014 from 9am-10:30am. JEMKIDS will conduct their weekly fitness class for kids ages 6-13 from 9am-10am. The classes develop overall strength, improve posture, movement & coordination while enhancing balance as well as other motor skills. Different games and challenges are employed to teach children these skills in a way that is fun & engaging. Parents will have the opportunity to get a fitness assessment by PowerFit Studio’s trainer John and Vivian Rice and hear a talk by PowerFit Studios’ celebrated fitness guru, Shirlee Fernandez. Difference Makers will provide complimentary glucose and blood pressure checks. Refreshments will be sponsored by Rozalyn H. Paschal Pediatrics. PowerFit Studios is located inside the Opera Tower at 1750 North Bayshore Drive, Miami, Fl 33132. The cost of the event is $10.00. Parking is $2.50 with validation. Powerfit Studios will also provided registered attendees with a gift card offering 2 Zumba classes, 2 Latin Ballroom dance classes, 20% off spa and slimming treatments and two Power Plate sessions. Complimentary chair massages and aromatherapy will also be provided.

“The growing rate of childhood obesity in our country is alarming,” said Shirlee Fernandez, Founder and Owner, PowerFit Studios, Miami. “Childhood obesity is entirely preventable. We are here to provide ways that encourage healthy eating and fitness habits.”

Jonerik Murphy — the founder of JEMKIDS — talked about the event saying, “Being a physically fit child isn’t about being a great athlete, it is about being a healthy person. If a child has poor posture, it will affect everything from self esteem to performance in school to long term health issues.  Therefore, children should be physically active early on to create strong, healthy bodies.” Jonerik has been certified by the International Youth Conditioning Association (IYCA) as a Youth Fitness Specialist (Level 2). He has a passion to help kids be healthy and move the best they can, whether it is for life’s everyday activities or for sports. JEMKIDS motto is: Infusing Fitness with Fun!

About PowerFit Studios
Built on the scientific foundation of whole-body vibration, the Power Plate at Power Fit Studios can grant bodies such benefits as improved muscle tone, increased circulation, and higher bone density. When combined with a

reasonable amount of rocket fuel, session spent atop the platform can accelerate users fitness goals. The private
studio also supports clients’ inner and outer well-being with more traditional approaches, including Zumba, and Latin Ballroom dance,as well as a range of soothing spa services. Power Fit Studios also offers specialty classes in aromatherapy, chakra-meditation and vision board workshops.

About JEMKIDS
JEMKIDS was created by Jonerik Murphy to help develop a culture of physically fit children at a time when the statistics show that the obesity rate is increasing throughout the youth population. While many schools are reducing or eliminating physical education programs to dedicate more time to classroom work, something is being left out: Physical literacy. Simply put, today’s youth spend too much time sitting and not moving. No one can argue that improving performance in school isn’t important. However, it should not come at the expense of physical development.
In this advanced technological age, more children are spending time playing video games than playing outside. JEMKIDS’ programs were created to address this lack of physical activity. As children mature, there is a window of opportunity to develop motor skills and movement skills most efficiently. If children are inactive during the body’s maturation process, than these skills will either be limited or not developed at all. Consequently, there are short term (children being overweight) and long term effects (increased medical expenses and complications as adults). www.jemkids.com

Celebrate the opening of Beatriz Milhazes: Jardim Botânico with live music by Alma Tropicalia and a waterfront bar on the terrace. Between sets enjoy Brazilian grooves from DJ Marcello Bentine.
The celebration features the Miami debut of Brazilian band Alma Tropicalia. The DC-based band reimagines the psych-samba sounds of 60’s tropicália music from Brazil, a mind-bending mix of tropical rhythms, soulful funk grooves and day-glo psychedelia that has quickly earned the group ecstatic reviews and packed performances across the region. The band’s daring lineup combines the masterful Brazilian jazz vocalist Elin (featured on Thievery Corporation’s Brazil-inspired album “Saudade”) with the unhinged experimentation of some of the top backing musicians in today’s rock and world music scene (featuring members of Cyro Baptista’s Beat the Donkey, Bio Ritmo, and more).
